Re: [CGUYS] Google Voice
It will be interesting to watch Google terrorize complacent telecom providers. Do you think they will suddenly find they need to "manage" Google's traffic? Probably not, it really doesn't make sense to be the traffic management police when the bottom line is selling bandwidth. Who are these complacent telecom providers? And what is their agenda? You have to live in or near Delaware. Big and small companies use Macs in their art departments and science labs [I used a Mac when I did work on robotics for Hewlett Packard]. Yes. What a great idea. Every time someone calls me, the phones at work will ring. Now the question becomes: If I answer at home, and someone answers at work, will we have a 3-way conversation? Re: [CGUYS] Can't print -- OS X Leopard
The G5 can't print to any of the printers. It also didn't recognize USB flash drives. I reinstalled the system, can see the flash drives, but still can't print. The printer utility for the local printers shows a print queue with completed documents, except they didn't print. Since it came from a bank there is a strong chance that the bank made an effort to disable USB using some hardware mechanism. I suggest checking out the hardware before looking at the software. Do some ports work and others not? The first thing I considered was the USB ports. The one in the front wasn't working. I couldn't find a USB driver in the System. I think the one for 10.5 is IOUSBfamily.kext, but I can't download it without subscription to Apple's developer site. Found a general open source link for USB drivers. I can get into the site using my general Apple login [same as for iTunes], but don't know what to do with the files yet. ReadMe says they need to be updated--well, so does the Mac. http://www.opensource.apple.com/darwinsource/10.5.6/IOUSBFamily-327.4.0/ The keyboard is plugged into the back and works OK. System Profiler sees the printers but can't print. I figured they disabled those ports for USB2, so I did an archive and install for 10.5 and 10.5.6. The front port now works with my flash drive, but it may be set up that way. The tech uses a 16 GB flash drive to boot from when he does troubleshooting. If I wipe the drive and reinstall the system that might work. I also have a USB2 PCI card to install. I hope the USB is disabled with software and not hardware. Maybe I'll just wipe the drive and start over to exorcise the bank's network settings. Annoying as it is, I'm glad the bank has good security--just not on my Mac. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

[CGUYS] Can't print -- OS X Leopard
We recently got a PowerMac G5 tower with 10.5.6 installed. It was "decommissioned" from a bank. It has two USB printers [Samsung ML-2010 and Epson 740] connected to it that worked with the older Quicksilver G4 running 10.4. A third printer is connected to another Mac via USB; we can print to it via WiFi or ethernet when the Mac is turned on. The G5 can't print to any of the printers. It also didn't recognize USB flash drives. I reinstalled the system, can see the flash drives, but still can't print. The printer utility for the local printers shows a print queue with completed documents, except they didn't print. Selecting the remote printer makes apps crash. Before my husband 'throws it out the window', how can I tweak the system to print to these three printers? GUI or command-line solutions are OK. Re: [CGUYS] Relinquishing copyright on Wikipedia photo
I concur with Betty's passion. But doing what is right often isn't even perceived. My parents were musicians. Friends have offered ripped music gratis, I always refused, to their disbelief. Unfortunately, the internet has brought piracy that is not worth litigating. One of my photos was used in a sweater ad in the Czech Republic, with neither compensation nor attribution. Everyone knows Kafka, right? The Czech courts are very much in that stream. Another image was taken by a small French company to advertise sorbet. Again, unfruitful to go after them. Many are the reasons, but we live in an era of theft on a universal scale. 90% of the software in CZ on private and business computers is pirated. I remember this when throwing cinderblocks at Adobe, who now compete successfully with other onerous software providers. They often have a point. But that's small potatoes compared to commercial and government intrusion. Against that scale, my individual images are important only to me. My attitude in this is to continue creating ideas I assume will be harvested eventually - often swiftly - by the unimaginative unwashed. It's so easy. I applaud David for asking. --- On Thu, 3/12/09, b_s-wilk wrote: From: b_s-wilk Subject: Re: [CGUYS] Relinquishing copyright on Wikipedia photo To: COMPUTERGUYS-L@LISTSERV.AOL.COM Date: Thursday, March 12, 2009, 11:54 AM >>> Your attitude implies that it's OK to steal someone's work. You really don't have the leisure to do a lengthy survey of all the doctors in your area, comparing evaluations (when you can get them) and prices (which usually aren't available anyway). And the stakes are high; in my case, I really need two working hands for any job I could possibly get, with my qualifications. If something went wrong because I shopped around and chose cheaper but second-rate medical care, I could be stuck with a crippled hand and permanent unemployment. I* will look those o0ver and it is indeed old news. Our list is a private list. All aspects of the list are classified as private. I am one of the owners listed with the list. We original were hosted by a company (I cant remember the name) but eventually got bought out and bought out so it is a Yahoo group. In the rules of the community, we do state that all correspondence are to be considered private and that they need permission of the poster to disseminate. It is unfortunate that in some circles this is not considered enough prohibition to stop someone from doing this. In Church circles they very often confuse religiosity with superiority to civil laws.
