Hello, Congratulations on becoming a Retrevo member. Our free service offers more than 100,000 manuals. Now that you've created your own personal account on Retrevo, why not let us store the manuals for all your gadgets. Click here to build your personal bookshelf of manuals. You will never have to go searching for a manual again. I've been doing something like this for years locally. Have a sort of local web site with pages for kitchen, laundry, outdoors, etc. Each page has pictures of things that link to their online manuals or local PDFs. When we get a new gizmo I just add it. The whole thing is in a public folder, so it's available from anywhere on the network. Works great. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

Reverend, I understand the Social Security Number's role in employment and taxes (the real reason banks started requiring it years ago). However, I cannot understand why people kowtow to consumer products companies to initiate service contract and to buy things such as a cell phone. That is going well beyond the purpose. Would you give M$ or Apple your Social Security Number to buy a computer and a service contract? I see this as propelling identity theft, because I don't trust the companies to keep the information secure, or not using it themselves in some quasi-legal way to mine customer information. Thank you, Mark Snyder -Original Message- It is required to open a bank account as they have to check with a clearing house to see if you are safe. To get a job they must check your immigration status (I-9) and possibly if you are foreign sounding run your SS number to see if you are eligible for employment. There are SS #s that state not eligible for employment. My wife is an Alien (Canadian) and has a SS card. She is eligible for employment. She must show her alien card when she is hired and fills out an I-9 form. The SS# has taken on a very big significance in the life of a person who lives and works in the USA. By the way in Canada it is called the SIN number. Re: [CGUYS] Sprint Requires SSN to Open Acct, buy Pre
Same here. However I knew in the military it was our ID#. It was required when you wrote a check at the PX or the comisary. When you got food the sign in sheet asked for your last 4. When you fill out a credit app. your SS# has to be on it. It has become a defacto federal ID card. In some foreign countries they issue ID cards. The US has never had a universally recognized ID card. I mentioned that up in Canada they issue everyone a SIN card which is similar to our SS#. However It is not used the same (I do not think as an ID) But the funny part is, it is issued on a hard plastic card. While our SS cards are flimsy paper. Recently for Military service and other things we have been asked for the actual SS card, not a copy or a duplicate. If you were to change jobs they might ask for the original SS card. I know we get hung up on the number but the SS administration will tell you it is an official US document. Not to be defaced or damaged. Oh when you go to retire it is I think one of the documents they ask you to show that you are who you claim to be. (I know of some folks that had a heck of a time getting some Government benefits as they could not show proof of who they were!) Re: [CGUYS] Notebook Normal Operating Temperature
Generally, you always determine this by just running the computer for a while. You get to know what it will do under different conditions. You can find charts of maximum CPU temps online, but it's unlikely you'll get anywhere near those before the thing just shuts down. Our old Dell laptop was slowing down after it warmed up. At first I thought it might be a bad wireless card, but I tried a USB receiver and it did the same. Like molasses after an hour. I pulled the heatsink off the cpu, cleaned up both sides, and applied a fresh bead of heatsink compound. Runs good now. Luckily ours was fairly easy to do this. I just googled the instructions.
