I've been doing something like this for years locally. Have a sort of local
"web site" with pages for kitchen, laundry, outdoors, etc. Each page has
pictures of things that link to their online
manuals or local PDFs. When we get a new gizmo I just add it. The whole thing
is in a public folder, so it's available from anywhere on the network. Works
great.

However, I cannot understand why people kowtow to consumer products

Would you give M$ or Apple your Social Security Number to buy a computer

It is required to open a bank account as they have to check with a
clearing house to see if you are safe.

To get a job they must check your immigration status (I-9) and possibly
if you are foreign sounding run your SS number to see if you are
eligible for employment.

There are SS #s that state not eligible for employment.

My wife is an Alien (Canadian) and has a SS card. She is eligible for
employment.

She must show her alien card when she is hired and fills out an I-9
form.

The SS# has taken on a very big significance in the life of a person who
lives and works in the USA.

By the way in Canada it is called the SIN number. (Social Insurance
Number)

We used to keep them in hanging folders in a file cabinet but decided that we
needed a better mousetrap when we couldn't fit them in one drawer any more.

The other advantage to this is that PDF manuals are searchable.

Same here.

However I knew in the military it was our ID#. It was required when
you wrote a check at the PX or the comisary.

When you got food the sign in sheet asked for your last 4.

When you fill out a credit app. your SS# has to be on it.

It has become a defacto federal ID card.

In some foreign countries they issue ID cards. The US has never had
a universally recognized ID card.

I mentioned that up in Canada they issue everyone a SIN card which is
similar to our SS#. However It is not used the same (I do not think
as an ID) But the funny part is, it is issued on a hard plastic
card. While our SS cards are flimsy paper.

If you were to change jobs they might ask for the original SS card.

I know we get hung up on the number but the SS administration will
tell you it is an official US document. Not to be defaced or damaged.

Oh when you go to retire it is I think one of the documents they ask

[CGUYS] Notebook Normal Operating Temperature

2009-06-23 Thread Edward Yarborough
Does anyone know or have an idea on how I can find the normal operating temp of
a Dell D600 notebook? They have made it extremely hard to find.

I really do not worry about furriners seeing as though I am married
to one of them.

M$ doesn't want your SSN, they want you to show your M$ Passport.
That is much better.

Just don't you dare ask me for a SSN when I'm buying an AK at the gun
show.

Interesting story on how the industry wants to kill flat rate
billing for the Internet.

Well we here certainly know what that looks like.

Re: [CGUYS] Notebook Normal Operating Temperature

2009-06-23 Thread Tony B
Generally, you always determine this by just running the computer for
a while. You get to know what it will do under different conditions.
You can find charts of maximum CPU temps online, but it's unlikely
you'll get anywhere near those before the thing just shuts down.

Our old Dell laptop was slowing down after it warmed up. At first I
thought it might be a bad wireless card, but I tried a USB receiver
and it did the same. Like molasses after an hour. I pulled the
heatsink off the cpu, cleaned up both sides, and applied a fresh bead
of heatsink compound. Runs good now. Luckily ours was fairly easy to
do this. I just googled the instructions.

I used to be married to one of them Canadians too. She told me that they didn't
count as furriners because they speak English, sort of, and their only agenda
was finding enough Molson's, eh?

I started in college 1979 and they changed to SSNs a couple of years later.
I would hope they have changed back since then. I knew it was a bad idea
then.

VA has changed drivers license numbers to it's own number. I had a clinic
ask for my SSN last week.
