Yes, it should be -mtime
30 if you want exactly 30 days
+30 for 30 days and older
-30 for 30 days and younger

> What does "'{}'" (quote lbrace rbrace quote) mean?

You can skip the single quotes. {} means substitute what the find
command found in earlier part, into the -exec section.

> What does the "\" at the end mean?

\; is the end of your -exec option. So, you could have another
option after that (ie: ... -exec rm -f {} \; -print)

However, this is a dangerous command. Run the following first to
see what it does. If you like the output, run it with 'rm -f'
instead of 'ls -l'

   find /some/path -type f -mtime +30 -exec ls -l {} \;

Well, according to that very article, the computer camera was
activated in the Robbins case for a reason other than specified by the
school system. According to the school system, the camera in that
case was turned on because a $55 insurance fee had not been paid. It
seems to me that an alleged failure to pay a school fee does not
comport with the requirements to only activate those cameras in cases
of lost, stolen or misplaced laptops. That single event proves that
the school system did limit their spying to only certain specified
incidents as had been previously stated.

The base alienware is a great game machine. They were known for some
really awesome gaming machines a number of years ago. One of the

Of course true gamers still build their own.

I have always had a PC with Windows, if I exclude the Apple IIe
computer. I have never owned or used a laptop, only a desktop. I think

now that I need to buy a laptop because wife has decided to use the
desktop many hours a day for her new-found hobby of photography: this
leaves me without access to a computer, particularly the internet or
other simple tasks. If I get a laptop I will need a simple & cheap one
only since wife goes to sleep early, thereby freeing the desktop

computer.

Starting with the Dell web site, I find that a laptop with:

Processor Intel TM 6600 Duo, 2.2 GHz, 800 MHz bus, 2 MB cache
Memory 4GB 800 MHz RAM
500 GB 5400 RPM hard drive
6-cell battery
Intel Link 5100 "N" wireless modem
8X CD/DVD burner (dual layer)

costs $659 before shipping.

Questions:

Is this laptop a good choice? Is it a good price? Are there other
brands or options that I ought to consider? Specially: I want good
performance at the cheapest price. I am very stingy by nature!

===

P.S. Please don't say to buy a Mac laptop instead of a Windows
machine. I bought my daughter a MacBook Pro and she likes it very well,

but I am more comfortable with a Windows OS because I already have a
large number of Windows programs that I can install on a laptop, plus I
don't want to start a new personal learning curve to use the Mac --
i.e., sharing data between computer might be hard -- and I want to go
cheap(!!) to buy a laptop.

Yes, it should be -mtime
30 if you want exactly 30 days
+30 for 30 days and older
-30 for 30 days and younger

> What does "'{}'" (quote lbrace rbrace quote) mean?

You can skip the single quotes. {} means substitute what the find
command found in earlier part, into the -exec section.

> What does the "\" at the end mean?

\; is the end of your -exec option. So, you could have another
option after that (ie: ... -exec rm -f {} \; -print)

However, this is a dangerous command. Run the following first to
see what it does. If you like the output, run it with 'rm -f'
instead of 'ls -l'

   find /some/path -type f -mtime +30 -exec ls -l {} \;

Apple also just revamped its Mac developer program, modeling it on the

I don't think Apple has alienated many developers, Mike!

Removed for good reason. Nor did Apple remove all apps that provide
this function. Apple did remove several apps after it discovered that
these apps were accessing the iPhone's hardware in a way that Apple
had prohibited. Developers who don't want to play by Apple's rules
will find that there can be consequences.

If the iPhone owner does not want to participate in Apple's protective
cocoon all they have to do is jailbreak their iPhone. Similarly
developers can sell their apps to the jail broken iPhones through non-
Apple channels.

What's the big deal here?

I have three machines that I actively use.

I have a desktop at home. Built out the way I like it. 1.25 TB hard
drive, Dual core, DBD burner, DVD Rom, Firewire etc. Nice case, it
is a powerhouse for me.

I have a work laptop. (Provided by me) it is a dockable Dell
Latitude AMD dual core 15.4 screen. I have a dock at work, with
keyboard, monitor etc. (hoping to upgrade to a flat panel shortly)

Then I have a HP netbook. The net book is my email, web browser when
I do not want to sit in front of the big machine, machine. When I
fly it is nice not to have take a big laptop with me. It is powerful
enough to run Word processors etc. I can watch movies on it and it
has a 6 hour battery life.

Each serves it purpose.

I bought my wife a desktop years ago as I kept loosing mine to
her. About 4 years ago I got her a laptop. She works very well on
the laptop. First one was a cheap Compaq. Never again. The last
one is a Dell Vostro and it is very good so far.

Re: [CGUYS] Recommendation for laptop computer advice sought

2010-03-05 Thread rleesimon
I faced this dilemma in late 2004 when my trusty win95 Toshiba laptop which
I loved was too skimpy on max 20mb memory to go forth (that laptop had a
scsi port on the back, very forward looking for the day, allowing me to
attach an external zip drive that gave me lots of storage...I can still see
my almost 100 zip disks).

I agonized over the new and expensive laptops finally settling on a
refurbished IBM x31 notebook with pIV1.4 250mbRAM/40gbHDD with some legacy
ports (EPP,Serial) but also the latest/greatest (2xUSB2,SD) and some I never
used (firewire4pin) with winXPpro. Thence I have upgraded now to 2gbRAM and
120gbHDD (both of which I got on eBay and installed in minutes myself). I
still use this all the time and have taken it all over using it in both the
USA and the EU (wifi gets me online everywhere).

It was cheap and has stood the test of time; the vendor was certified IBM
and it was, on receipt, indistinguishable from brand new. The original
battery still gives good service. It still looks brand new; screen is
bright and all pixels are good. I bought 2 docking stations for both sides
of the Atlantic (eBay again...cheap) each having a DVDR which can
accommodate many other devices as well, and now carry a WDPassport500gb
external HDD for music and backup.

I don't think it would run Windows7...who cares?

It's dirt simple. The right to privacy in the home was breached. Looking
at children via webcam or otherwise in a state of undress or susceptible to
be so is illegal. They did it and the fact one student was sanctioned for
having misbehaved on camera proves that. The thing has devolved into a
money issue for parents property values and for the school system fearing a
money judgment as well as diminishment of their upper crust reputation
leading to high placement of graduates in gold star colleges/universities.
What is lost in all this by having it play out as a civil matter is the
constitutional issue. It should be handled criminally IMHO.

(They are a part of Tiger Direct be prepared to be bombarded with

Also Geeks or Newegg.

This listserv is so oriented towards social issues, I am almost afraid
to ask a computer question. But, here goes:

I have always had a PC with Windows, if I exclude the Apple IIe
computer. I have never owned or used a laptop, only a desktop. I think
now that I need to buy a laptop because wife has decided to use the
desktop many hours a day for her new-found hobby of photography: this
leaves me without access to a computer, particularly the internet or
other simple tasks. If I get a laptop I will need a simple & cheap one
only since wife goes to sleep early, thereby freeing the desktop computer.

Starting with the Dell web site, I find that a laptop with:

Processor Intel TM 6600 Duo, 2.2 GHz, 800 MHz bus, 2 MB cache
Memory 4GB 800 MHz RAM
500 GB 5400 RPM hard drive
6-cell battery
Intel Link 5100 "N" wireless modem
8X CD/DVD burner (dual layer)

costs $659 before shipping.

Questions:

Is this laptop a good choice? Is it a good price? Are there other
brands or options that I ought to consider? Specially: I want good
performance at the cheapest price. I am very stingy by nature!

P.S. Please don't say to buy a Mac laptop instead of a Windows
machine. I bought my daughter a MacBook Pro and she likes it very well,
but I am more comfortable with a Windows OS because I already have a
large number of Windows programs that I can install on a laptop, plus I
don't want to start a new personal learning curve to use the Mac --
i.e., sharing data between computer might be hard -- and I want to go

rid of a desk in our home and make some more room. After about 8 months she
just decided she wanted her desk back because while the laptop was full size

That came up in our discussion on what we would do about her laptop. The
cost of just building a solid system, I already had the
case/keyboard/mouse/hard drives, and getting some kind of dock was not much
different. Decided on the little tower instead.

The thing is, some of their little darlings may have been involved,
but they just don't know about it.

I think it is fairly clear that many of these super well-heeled
residents of that school district are primarily worried about
protecting their property values that are inherently connected to the
reputation of the school district in which they reside and own
property. That is why they just want the controversy to just go away.
Indeed, many families moved to that county and school district
specifically to take advantage of that school system in terms of how
it props up property values as well as grinding out students who
matriculate to Ivy League universities in large numbers. As you
pointed out, many do not give a rats ass as long as it does not
involved one of their kids.

We really do not know everything, but the school system did admit to
failing to inform any of the parents about the potential for spying.
To my way of thinking that is a very big deal in and of itself,
particularly since that school system administration is stuffed with
lawyers. As it was, the capacity to spy was the sole means by which
lost or stolen laptops could be located, yet no one outside the school
administration knew of that.

It's not possible to sue just the officials and not the school district.
The chances of financial recovery are also too low to justify said
suits too. If said officials were carrying out school duties then the
School District is liable, it's that simple.

I will repeat though, we and that includes those folks like me who
actually know where Lower Merion is, that only the lawyers, school
district officials and possibly the parents and students involved know
all of the details. We have absolutely no idea what parents and
students agreed to when accepting said laptops and I pointedly note that
if said laptop had been recovered from a non-student, few on this list
would be up in arms despite the equal invasion of privacy.

What you're suggesting is not legally possible. If an entity or
individual can be sued, then that entity or individual has the right to
have legal counsel. Besides, I can guarantee right now that all we have
is speculation about what actually happened in Lower Merion. This is a
nice juicy story, but consider how many folks have installed software to
aid recovery on laptops and other computers, the same type of software
that is now claimed to have been misused.

Lower Merion School District in case anyone is interested also has other
suits pending on other issues like whether or not it intentionally
assigned African-American students to one school rather than a closer
school in the name of balance.

> It doesn't help anyone in that school district to pay lawyers.

So would you have the same belief if for example the school district
were being sued over claims that it was using X-ray equipment to look at
the naked bodies of citizens on the street despite it not having X-Ray
equipment available to do so?

I also note that the folks making the claim that the district should not
be sued likely would not quite feel that way if their darlings were
involved.

I have seen how much revealing too much about one's self can do. I was
also once peripherally involved in the aftermath of someone whose
microphone was somehow activated when it was not supposed to be, the
results were catastrophic to put it mildly.

Tape over a lens isn't a reliable long term solution. Now if you want
to tell me that there is an equivalent of the lens cap on an SLR camera
for cameras, that would likely be an adequate solution.

As for what I do in front of a computer, I have a great deal of
hesitation having folks know that I don't shave three times a day or
that I have a messy computer room. Seriously, the argument asking what
I have to hide is irrelevant, I value privacy more than I value a web cam.
