During the last week, my cable modem for Cox Cable loses its Internet
connection about once or twice a day. When troubleshooting, the light
that indicates the cable connection on the Linksys modem, model
BEFCMU10, is not illuminated. If I reboot the modem, it comes up
fine and I get adequate speeds through the connection. After calling
Cox, the only thing they can offer is a service call for which I will
be charged if it turns out that the problem is after their connection.

I have also noticed a slight degradation in the analog TV signal from
Cox during the last week as well.

Should I just go ahead and replace the modem to see if that makes a
difference? It would be less than the service call.

Yes, replace it. I had exactly the same issues and the modem finally failed.
They suggested a service call, but I suspected that they would just say I
needed to replace the modem. Much more convenient for me to go to the Cox
office than wait for a service tech. Replacement was around $35. My modem was a
several years old and should have been changed for one meeting the newer
standards a couple of years ago.

There's no real cons. I use Dropbox on my Macbook, Windows 7 running

If you already have an MP3 file it is not going to do any

iTunes 8 allows flipping a file back and forth between music and

I'd appreciate some advice:

I want to buy a relatively inexpensive, monochrome laser printer for
very light duty in a home office with three Macs networked via a

desirable but not strictly necessary (e.g. I can't pay too much extra
for it), and a small footprint is greatly desirable.

I find it hard to choose from all the options available online, plus I
have some specific questions:

1) All things being equal, what's the best way to network a printer:
ethernet to the router, USB to the Airport, or either to the
physically closest Mac (an iMac in my case)?

2) Does the printer language emulation matter for any reason as long
as the printer is Mac 10.5 compatible? (I'm currently using an Apple
Laserwriter Select 360 that supports PostScript level 2, but other
makers seem to have brand-specific languages.)

3) Any thoughts about the wisdom or not of buying used?

TIA

I use a refurb Palm Zire 31. It was about $90 and has a color backlit

Each page is about the chunk of text I'd scan in a book, so each
push of the button is right in rhythm with my reading style. I use it
waiting in line at the bank or grocery and especially love it for
long night time car trips. It is also a useful anti-boredom measure
for those long waits outside the dressing room when accompanying a
loved one clothes shopping. It's cheap enough that I won't be
heartbroken if I lose or destroy it. It fits in a pant's pocket. It
can be used under many lighting conditions. An hour or a month later
it is still at the paragraph where you left off and you will never
run out of reading material.

I hate ebooks.

I travel a lot. I carry paperback books. They drop. They get wet. They
fall in mud, dirt, get lost under the seat in cars, buses, planes,
trains. When I finish reading my book, I give it to someone else, and
pick up another. Many small hotels, inns, apartments outside the US
have
a library where you leave your finished books and pick up one you
like.
Our local public library [Cecil County, MD] has a free magazine
exchange

and used paperback books for 10-25 cents.

Wet paperbacks can dry out. Wet ebooks die. I trade paperback books
with

other readers. I'd have to refill an ebook and couldn't share it and
have something to read at the same time. I've never had an ebook on
the
beach, but I suspect they're hard to read in the sun, and don't do
well

in sand [?].

Be sure that the person who will potentially receive the ebook really
wants one and realizes its features and limitations. Otherwise the
ebook
will end up spending more time on a shelf or in a drawer, or
broken. For

electronic books, I prefer unabridged audiobooks on my iPod.

My 2 cents.

How difficult is it to get to the hard-to-get-to memory slot? Does it

It depends. It has 2 memory slots. Only one is easy to get to. So ideally
you want it to come with 1024 in the hard-to-get-to slot and the easy one
empty so you can eventually get 2GB. If it comes 512 + 512 you will have
to discard the 512 to put in 1024 to max out at 1.5GB. So if you can't
 get 1024 + 0 you it may be wiser to order 1024 + 1024.

If you are using a router try connecting directly to the modem. If
that works, you know it is a router issue. I spent many hours trying
to solve a similar situation. DNS lookup didn't work for the iMac
connected directly to the router, but worked flawlessly for the
ibooks connected by wireless. Switching port usually got things
working for a bit, but it was a firmware update that solved it. I was
a Dlink router.

Re: [CGUYS] Memory stick / flash drive with U3 -- get rid of U3

2007-06-03 Thread David Newhall
The security setup on the public computers at my library (part of the
Fairfax County system) doesn't allow U3 flash drives to work. Just
the cd portion of the drive appears. Recently, there have been a
few students with dead printers at home who were unable to print
their last minute papers at the library. I spent quite a long time
trying to help one desperate student. I now know that if you see the
U3 cd icon and no flash, you are out of luck.

U3 USB may not install drivers on the local machine in the sense of
not putting commands in the registry to load drivers (whether the
U3 drive is attached or not) and not writing the driver files to
the local machine hard drive, but the U3 package does have drivers
(dlls, etc.) in it which are surely loaded from the memory stick
into the computer's main memory when the U3 drive is inserted into
a USB port.

Just to clarify, U3 drives do not (or should not) install any
drivers on the local
machine. The whole point of U3 is that it's completely machine-
independent. When you
install a U3-compliant program on it, you can cart your U3 drive
to any PC and run the
program without installation and without affecting the local
registry, etc. It's really a

pretty neat idea, and in my experience it works very well indeed.
