Apart from the kernel and initscripts, I've been updating my 6.0 system with
the Cooker rpms. No real problems, just from time to time with -1mdk
labeled rpm's.

That's what I forgot: lilo.conf specifies the kernel version. IMHO rpm
needs to update lilo.conf by doing something like

if [ -x /sbin/lilo -a -f /etc/lilo.conf ]; then
sed -e 's#/boot.*kernel.*mdk#/boot/kernel-2.2.13-20mdk#' \
 < lilo.conf > lilo.conf.new
if cmp lilo.conf*; then
/sbin/lilo
fi
fi

That way lilo isn't run unless it sees an mdk kernel. (note - you don't
want to use above script verbatim, because rpm needs to be smart enough
to _only_ do s/old-version/new-version/)

One thing I was wondering -- RedHat has always had the problem where a
kernel upgrade via RPM was not complete, ie. I could not do

rpm -U kernel*.rpm
reboot

and get a new kernel.

Basically it did not re-run LILO, if I recall correctly, but there may
have been other problems too.

Does Mandrake have the same problem?

[Cooker] Upgrading 6.1 with cooker components

1999-10-19 Thread Chris Lyttle

Hi
I was wondering if it is a problem to upgrade 6.1 with cooker rpm's. For
example I need to upgrade the pcmcia package as the 3.1.0 version that comes
with 6.1 doesn't work with my xircom realport cardbus card. I read on the
pcmcia site that there were some bugs with the 3.1.0 release that were fixed
by 3.1.1 specifically related to this card. I was also wondering if the
release of enlightenment 0.16 was in cooker and able to upgrade the one in
6.1

2.3.23 pre 2 includes the merge of Andre's latest IDE patch. Lots of
improvements by appearances, including my own VIA updates :)

Only a few hard disk controller drivers support ATA66. For example
Sis620 does have support for this feature.
PS: upgrade to 2.3.18 or above (NOT 2.3.22) because there were a LOT of
optimizations in hard disk acces; ie : boot sequence is 2 or 3 times
faster, launching X11 is 2 - 3 times faster too.

This didn't work with the redhat 6.0 "rpm". I upgraded to Mandrake's
rpm and the environment setting. That worked. I have now been able to
compile about 12 of the 15 in this group. Only a few didn't work out.

It does. I guess that's what causes the error message. It's not a
problem,
this stuff is x86 specific...

I've tried it a few years ago on my first alpha (a UDB). Very very slow,
but it works... It's not pretty though... getting the Tru64 lib's to run
netscape & acrobat is a better idea...

[Cooker] Error on install : Exception Occured....

1999-10-19 Thread Luke A. Higgins

Hello all,

I just tried an install from a cooker.iso image I made from a mirror (mirror
updated as of this morning) and chose "Install Custom System"

After it got to the part where it says "Reading Package information" I got a
page that was something like:
---

Exception Occured

Traceback(innermost last):

File "/usr/bin/anaconda", line 218, in ?
intf.run(todo,test=test)
File "usr/lib/python1.5/site-packages/text.py", line 1000, in run
rc=apply(step[1](),step[2])

...
a bunch of other lines involving File "usr/lib/python1.5/site-packages/*stuff*"
...
KeyError:knfsd-clients
---

At this point it asked whether to debug or not and when I said not it
proceeded to shutdown the system. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Luke

wine should have a line

ExclusiveArch: i386 i486 i586

in its spec file.
The same should be added for dosemu and such.

The alpha version need some alpha-specific ones too; like the emx86
I think is called allowing to run (most) Linux/i386 programs on Linux/alpha.

> The packages in "File_contains_non-printabable_characters"

No; it's just a locales definition; if you use the 'C' locale any 8bit char
will lead to that message.
Using any 8bit locale when compiling will solve it.

Maybe rpm could be patched so it won't assume anymore that description
messages are in us-ascii only...
