I had some issues with XFree86 4.0 and Xinerama as well. I got it
working by doing `XFree86 -configure` -- it detected both my TNT2 card
and my Voodoo3 card. All I had to do to go multihead then was add the
'"Screen0" RightOf "Screen1"' thing in the ServerLayout section (I found
the info in the Xinerama HOWTO on LDP --
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Xinerama-HOWTO.html is where it's at).

Now everything's groovy. :)

No, and the install programm found instead this S3Trio3D crap on this dreadly
i810 Motherboard --)
But XFree probes successfully the voodoo at startup :
(II) TDFX: Driver for 3dfx Banshee/Voodoo3 chipsets: 3dfx Banshee,

So, i think the problem is rather something missing than just a detection
problem.

yep

i don't know what is a base system util but requires readline (other than
bash)

so maybe it is good to static link bash and then move it back to /usr/lib ??

[Cooker] Small interface problems with install

2000-06-11 Thread Guillaume Rousse

Some problems i encountered while installing, and i already saw in the 7.0, so
maybe they're worth to be corrected next time.

Network configuration :
subnet mask reinitialising to 255.0.0.0 every time you got the focus on the
field
gateway field could be already initialised with a value guessed from
adress and subnet mask, or at least checked for coherency with the mask
proxy configuration does not clearly show that protocol is waited before the
adress, and missing it result to restart again all the configuration. Just
initalising these fields with http:// and ftp:// would be enough.

X configuration :
I often lost my mouse (microsoft PS2 intellimouse) after X server test, so i
had to finish with keyboard only.

Elseway, where is the famous theme-choice for the installer :-) ?

Re: [Cooker] 7.1 install of XFree86 4.0 fails

2000-06-11 Thread Guillaume Rousse

Got the same problem, with a voodoo3 card.
Launching startx resulted in :
This should not happen! An unresolved function was called!
I can send full log if someone is interested.
XFdrake resolved the problem just by adding SVGA server, resulting an hybrid
install : two package from XFree 4, and the rest from XFree 3 !!!
I tried to upgrade every 3.3.6 package with cooker package, but it didn't
solved anything. Instead, i had corrupted fonts and no way to launch xterm.
I had to switch back to 3.3.6, using --oldpackage and --nodeps, as many of
other rpms are depending of libXxpm.so.4.
So, why such a mix of versions, with package dependants of other not present on
the CD ?

I suppose it did not find any package at all.

Many times several people reported this problem, but I still don't know if
it has been identified/solved in our installer. At the beginning I thought
it was coming frpm people downloading and making their own (failing)
hdlists/depslists, but it seems that also there are people with ISO that
get this error.

Is there something to cope with not detecting a valid disk device for
install (happens to people with big disks it seems) ?

They are created the *first* time you run gmc.
So you have either to delete all .gnome-desktop (but that will delete
all your other icons too).
Or you can easily create them, open a terminal and type:

cd ~/.gnome-desktop
ln -s /mnt/floppy floppy
ln -s /mnt/DOS_hda1 "My Windows disk"
ln -s /mnt/cdrom cdrom

etc. for anything on /mnt, the link name (the "floppy", "My Windows disk" etc
part of the commands above) can be anything (use quotes for special chars),
and can be in your language. Those strings will be what is displayed as icon
texts.

Then, click with right button on desktop and ask for re-read desktop icons
(or something like that). the new icons will appear; now you have to put
nice icons that fit you, click with right button on the icons and choose
whatever you like.

That may be on the sources...
It's true that while ^? (a DEL char) is problematic on Linux,
^[[3~ (A delete next char ANSI escape sequence) doesn't have such problems.
I'll ask to the gnome-terminal author if ^[[3~ can't be sent instead.

Hmmm... things are getting ugly.

I'm in the process of recompiling the packages above, and the
results are not nice. They compile fine, but when you try to
install them:

rpm -Uvh guile-*

libreadline.so.4.1 is needed by guile-1.3.4-3mdk

AFAIK nupe not really, because init runs, then rc.sysinit runs, which is
actually a #!/bin/sh script see

#!/bin/sh
#
# /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit - run once at boot time
#
# Taken in part from Miquel van Smoorenburg's bcheckrc.
#

# Rerun ourselves through initlog
if [ -z "$IN_INITLOG" ]; then
 [ -f /sbin/initlog ] && exec /sbin/initlog $INITLOG_ARGS -r
/etc/rc.d/rc.sysini
t
fi

# Set the path
PATH=/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin
export PATH

# Read in config data.
if [ -f /etc/sysconfig/network ]; then
. /etc/sysconfig/network
else
NETWORKING=no

well , you know what that means ...

_and_

please read my other post, linux actually runs /bin/sh with execcve() ( and
not sash) (if it acutally works) if /etc/init /sbin/init et al fails.

Isn't it unwise to have a bash with static library's for normal use? Why
can't there exist to versions? Or why couldn't the script's before /usr is
mounted use sash, or som other lightweight static shell?

I used the hd installation and I was not asked at any point!!

You did not comment on the other problem, shall i take as they are now fixed?

I know most of the problems are not possible to fix before next release, but
with
the encryption stuff you still have a chance.

On another point, is it possible for a small company to distribute any of
the mandrake cd's?
I have written 3 letters to the [EMAIL PROTECTED], but no answer. Could
someone

yep i think that person was me, i pointed out that some people can boot very
broken system swith init=/bin/sh (which btw is what the linux kernel checks
with execvce() and NOT sash!!)

no, readline could go in lib, for the erason that as i have pointed out
already, /usr may not be mounted on boot for broken systems.

umm, bash should be static (actually ! only with readline but also with
glibc too) and recompile and add symlinks in /usr/lib, that should fix
everything ;)

[Cooker] bash-readline real problem

2000-06-11 Thread jwd

The real problem with the changes to bash and moving libreadline to /lib
(BTW, bash requires libhistory, too) is that bash prior to 2.04-4mdk had
both libreadline and libhistory as static links and at leat one person
pointed out that this was a good thing. You could always get bash going
before this change was made.

Instead of really looking at the porblem we got a reaction to the
symptom and someone moved readline to /lib. The problem was not with
readline but with bash. Now we find that moving readline to /lib causes
other problems.

please -- a little attention to detail here. Bash needs to be fixed not
readline.

"you can't tell me it is as easy as WinNT to setup" that was once
correct, but not any more. i have a "thing" with operating systems -
they interest me very intensely, and so i try them out quite regularly.
in the past few years, i've installed slackware 2.x, redhat 4.x, 5.x,
6.x, mandrake 5.2, 6.0, 7.0 and now 7.1, corel 1.1, windows nt server
4.0, windows 9x (probably 2-300 times), various versions of dos,
freebsd, beos from 3.0 up to current... the beos installer was pretty
simple, but i can *honestly* say that i have *never* seen a system
better set up than the mandrake 7.1 system i installed a few days ago.
it detected EVERYTHING it needed to and set them up accordingly. sound
blaster live, crap onboard video, etc. win9x is relatively easy to set
up, but this installer, quite honestly, put it to shame. you may prefer
windows, and that's fine - to each his own. but please don't say things
like this around easily influenced people and prospective linux users.
it borders on propaganda...

Sounds good... (seems 2 B a low-level package, by looking at the things
it impacted)..

[Cooker] 7.1 install of XFree86 4.0 fails

2000-06-11 Thread Hoyt

I attempted to install XFree86 version 4.0 during my install of 7.1, but it
failed and I have 3.3.6 instead. I have dual head running under 4.0 in my
7.0 install.

I noticed that there were only two 4.0 specific rpm's in 7.1 vice the many
rpm's from cooker. I installed these and copied my XF86Config file over, but
it will not work.

How do I now go about correctly installing 4.0 in Mandrake 7.1? Should I be
using the cooker packages?

it has to be %preun.

if you do want an id i guess you can make a patch and rework the date when
you rebuild mozilla ..

mozilla really sucks, everyone who has compiled it will know how many
f*cking warnings there are ...

There is a problem with the non-root build of the
isdn4k-utils-3.1b7-2mdk from Mdk 7.1 and the
isdn4k-utils-3.1b7-4mdk from cooker !

The ISDN Subsystem doesn`t work with Mdk 7.1, please release an
update of the isdn4k-utils package !!

If i build it non-root the devices are missing in the rpm !!

I had to rebuild the package as root to get ISDN working.

I hope you had a good reason for this... It impacted the following
packages:

fetchmailconf
gnome-pilot
gnome-pilot-devel
gnumeric
guile
guile-devel
jpilot
kpilot
netcfg
pilot-link
pilot-link-devel
postgresql
postgresql-devel

postgresql-odbc
postgresql-perl
postgresql-python
postgresql-server
postgresql-tcl

Now let's hope it won't be changed back to /usr/lib ;-)

Re: [Cooker] Mozilla daily builds

2000-06-11 Thread Stefan van der Eijk

I've uploaded

hackmozilla-5.0-0.NB2608.2mdk.i686.rpm
hackmozilla-5.0-0.NB2608.2mdk.src.rpm
hackmozilla-devel-5.0-0.NB2608.2mdk.i686.rpm

to /incoming.

(The 2000/06/09 nightly build would not run on my sys...)

Could these maybe replace the M13 release in contrib?

There are still some issues:
- Menu icon does not apear in "Networking/WWW". Maybe a mandrake menu
expert can have a look at it (should be EZ to fix).
- The files /usr/lib/mozilla/components/xpti.dat and xptitemp.dat
are created with %post. They should be removed in a %preun or %postun
before the files are removed from the disk. Otherwise messages like
  /usr/lib/mozilla/components is not empty apear.
- Not as far mandrakized as netscape currently is
- I would like the "Build ID" on the lower left to reflect the date
of the nightly build. (maybe some info about this is available on
  the mozilla site).

Mozilla related issue (I've found):
- Does not apear to load homepage at startup.
- Still crashes (especially on alpha).
- Chatzilla is nog in the "tasks" menu. More of a mozilla related issue,
not something packaging could solve. I did find the following text on
dejanews, but after looking in the tasksOverlay.xul file I decided
not to do anything there (for the moment). Most people should be able
  to cope without chatzilla ;-)

===
Chatzilla is working in the current tree.
To start it up, run mozilla with the -chat option (thanks to sspitzer).
If you
really want it in the tasks menu, and can't wait until there's a correct
way to
do it, add the line

to your tasksOverlay.xul file, just under the other xul-overlay.

I've taken out almost all of the HTML elements from the UI, and applied
a patch
from Josh Gough which adds a slew of new commands.

The list of nicknames is quite busted at the moment, I hope to turn it
into a
tree this week, in time for the upcomming milestone.

Thanks for the interest,

Rob.
