[Cooker] mailfilter-0.1.1-1mdk.src.rpm -- uploaded
Dear all, yesterday I have uploaded a source rpm of my anti-spam utility called Mailfilter. Find it in the incoming/ directory of ftp.linux-mandrake.com. More information, as well as pre-compiled binaries and source tarball, can be found on the Mailfilter homepage: http://mailfilter.sourceforge.net/ Also be sure to read the enclosed, brief description. Thanks for your time and interest, Andreas. -<8><8>--- Mailfilter is a flexible utility for UNIX (-like) operating systems to get rid of unwanted spam mails, before having to go through the trouble of downloading them into the local computer. It offers support for one or many POP3 accounts and is especially useful for dialup connections via modem, ISDN, etc. Mailfilter connects to any POP3 mail box and compares part of its content to a set of user defined filter rules. That way the spam gets deleted directly on the mail server. With Mailfilter you can define your own filters (rules) to determine which e-mails should be delivered and which are considered waste. Rules are regular expressions, so you can make use of familiar options from other mail delivery programs such as e.g. procmail. Mailfilter is released under the terms of the GNU General Public License. For more information, see the README and COPYING documents provided with the Mailfilter program. -<8><8>--- -- Andreas Bauer, [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://home.in.tum.de/baueran/

I actually got it working using the stock Mandrake kernel (although I had previously run your makeoldconfig, make dep suggestion and was still having problems). The catch is to specify the correct directory spec for the include files. It's /usr/src/linux/include. Once I got that right, the rest went smoothly. Re: [Cooker] Performance gain by compiling kernel 2.4 for Celeron?
Hi! I'm using a 400 MHz Celeron. Would I gain any noticable performance (ie. >=5%) if I were to recompile the kernel with exact same settings as Mandrake uses but instead choosing Celeron as the target CPU instead of the default 586 target that is used by Mandrake? im not sure (using a P75 myself) but depending one the definition of Celeron ie orig pII or newer pIII Celeron you may only get a nonbootable kernel. Try both the "parent" cpu type (i think pII for your clock) and celeron to check. any way your kernel will not run on pI, pImxx, or 486 cpus Robert L martin who wishes he had alexanders problem (three freaking hours to comp a kernel!)

RE: [Cooker] rtl8139 on the network boot disk
Well, actually, I did try that one, mainly because it looked so promising (the magic number "8139" and all). It didn't work. So then I got frustrated and went down the entire list and tried each and every module listed, all to no good effect. :-) Is it picky about the I/O address or anything (I'm pretty sure the BIOS is set to "Plug and play OS = NO" - would that matter?). I dunno, I'm just guessing there. Maybe I've actually found a bug. Wouldn't that be exciting for me. Anyway, the thread titled "install hd.img for BusLogic" has a reference to using expert mode to choose extra modules (quoting Guillaume Cottenceau: "Copy it on an ext2-filesystem'ed floppy, type "expert" at boot time and put this floppy as an additional modules floppy."). Silly me, not being so full of myself as to consider myself an expert (I always choose expert or "custom" when install M$ stuff, why not Linux stuff). :-) I'll see what I can make of that tonight (build rtl8139.o on my 7.2 box and insert it using expert mode). I will also try 8139too.o again, just to make sure I'm not lying about it not working. ;-) Eaon > -Original Message- > From: Robin Cook [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Monday, January 29, 2001 4:06 PM > To: Eaon > Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: Re: [Cooker] rtl8139 on the network boot disk > > > Hello Eaon, > > The module you are looking for is 8139too.o in the 2.4.0 kernels. > > Monday, January 29, 2001, 10:23:28 AM, you wrote: > > E> Second try - sent this last week and it never went through - > was something > E> broken perhaps? Warly/flepied should take care of that but they are at NY for Linux-Expo and they've had trouble for the past days with the scripts, that's why (AFAIK). To rebuild by yourself between rsync's here's the relevant extract from gi/docs/README (for once we write docs!). -=-=-- If you have your own rpms you want to add, or make your own updated cdrom, you just have to issue: % gendistrib --noclean --distrib Where is the root of all the media that the install will see: (1) network or 1-cdrom installs DIRS == the root directory of the Distribution (2) multi-cdrom install DIRS == the root directories of all the media that the install will see ``gendistrib'' will scan, from the DIRS you provide, for some Mandrake/RPMS* directories containing some RPM packages. For multi-cd, please use Mandrake/RPMS, Mandrake/RPMS2, etc. For one CD or a network/hd volume, please use Mandrake/RPMS. [Cooker] mosix & Q.C.
can someone please tell me if / when mosix is going to be properly upported in mandrake? I got it working by brute force with kernel 2.2.18 (which incidently seemingly got lost in all the hurah over 2.4) bit this kernel never compiled properly, the make menuconfig was broke & some weird disk errors started apearing afterwards. What we need is some serious clustering capabilities built right into the system from word go. I have 50+ 500+mz machines on a fast lan - only a few of those are heavyly tasked at any one time, however if those resouces could be shared properly & easily it would be a real breeze to handle the peaks on ALL the machines. AS for Q.C. in Mandrake - it seems to be deteriorating fast In general our experience of 7.0 was good, 7.1 was better but we have had very mixed results with 7.2 ( the upgrade does not work at all, ( often results in an unusable & trashed system! requiring re-format!) neither does the network install ( also a samba install is missing ) the real install leaves out many of the packages at random even when 100% is chosen it just goes its own way & generaly needs several attempts just to get a working system - also th mandrake update progam is K**p it always fails & cannot handle the dependencies set out in the upgrade dir - just crashes or offers to either force all packages or just quit! Mandrake is a good system, just hope more attention can be paid to detail & quality otherwise we are just re-inventing MS's mistakes - too fast to market with too buggy & unfinished software, then onto the next pice of junk! My other big bitch is that with so many Linux packages being realy hot of the press & required as fixes, it is disconcerting & potentially dangerous to be forced to patch a production system with files from cooker or the next version simply because no-one had bothered to add the tested updates to the update dir. ( take the upgrades released for MySQL / netscape / PHP3 to PHP4 etc for example & there are LOTS more Come on guys how hard can it be to have a HOT ( i.e. run a script from the command line NOT X-win that downloads & installs all the latest & greatest (or as required) then (perhaps at most one ) simple reboot to init the new kernel etc) upgrade to a working system to keep it bang up to date? for server systems taht would be MUCH easier to handle than a day of downtime & the risk that it will trash everything. To follow from that theme if the same script can then update all the other machines on the lan then life would be better, the mirrors would have better use of the bandwith & you would have more much happier customers. Hope someone will take note of the above. I realise there are other agendas etc. but if we cannot easyly keep current, have polished software ( that thought no doubt will earn me a flame! ) & utilise the benefits of the latest technology then are we not missing the (linux) plot in a big way? Thanks & Regards, Mark Berger [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Second try - sent this last week and it never went through - was something broken perhaps? Or I got censored for being an idiot, who knows. ;-) Ok, go easy on me. I've just recently put on the chef's hat and entered the kitchen. But alas, I'm stuck at the door. I've mirrored cooker to a working machine running 7.2. I want to set up over the network (NFS) to another machine, so I created the network boot disk. But the system I'm going to install on has a DLink DFE-538TX card, which uses rtl8139.o. It's not in the list of available modules (though it's a decent card for the price, working for me on other machines - it should work). How do I a) add it to the list or b) get some nice person to see to it that the driver is on the next version of that disk? Or, inspiration strikes, could I ALT-F? to somewhere and insmod it manually? ATL-F3 and ALT-F4 have no prompt at which to type, so I'm not seeing this as a possibility, but perhaps... Eaon

[Cooker] upgrade from 7.2 to cooker
I'm trying to upgrade my Mdk 7.2 installed to the cooker and I cannot do it... is there any document or something explaining how to do it ? Whenever I try to install something from cooker I get failed dependecies because the new libstdc++ is needed, if I try to install the new libstdc++ all the older packages complain because they need the older (there's no backward compatibility, why the libraries can serve the old programs ?). Re: [Cooker] vmware and kernel 2.4
When I do this it complains that my kernel is 11mdksmp and my inculdes are for 11mdk. See error below. Keith The directory of kernel headers (version 2.4.0-11mdk) does not match your running kernel (version 2.4.0-11mdksmp). Consequently, even if the compilation of the module was successful, the module would not load into the running kernel. I use it in MandrakeUpdate and rpmdrake. With a little wrapper (FindMatches), it is almost as readable as a perl regex-statement ;-) The code could look like, given that FindMatches() has been translated to C++: if (FindMatches(ftp_site, machine+":(.*)", res)) { mirrors->push_back(res[1]); } which pretty much looks like the perl code. -- [EMAIL PROTECTED]

How many times am I going to be told it is fixed before it's actually fixed? I am sure everybody here remembers the last time I complained about this problem. Can you all believe that the huge discussion last time did not yield a fix to the problem? Why is this so friggin' difficult to fix? Just go checkout the friggin' specfile change one simple %files entry and check the damn thing back in again! Is it really that friggin' difficult? Jeez, give me commit permisions to the CVS repository and I will do it myself. I am starting to feel like I am wasting my time testing Cooker and reporting problems here. It seems like nothing ever gets fixed anymore. What is going on guys? Before you answer, can I please beg of you that you go fix the sendmail RPM? Please? Pretty please? ~sigh~ b. -- Brian J. Murrell
Re: [Cooker] Trying To Install Cooker
The problem stem from inconsistencies in the database. The files hdlist.cz, and depslist.ordered contain a refernce to old kernel rpms, while the RPMS dir contain new versions. In order to succeed, replace 10 with 11 as follows: (check both files above) kernel-2.4.0-11mdk -1 kernel-doc-2.4.0-11mdk -1 kernel-headers-2.4.0-11mdk -1 kernel-pcmcia-cs-2.4.0-11mdk -1 kernel-smp-2.4.0-11mdk -1 kernel-source-2.4.0-11mdk -1 kernel-utils-2.4.0-11mdk -1 lm_utils-2.4.0_2.5.5-11mdk -1 After doing so I was able to install cooker with no complaints. However, from my experience, it seems that these files are incosistent most of the time and it would have been nice if some procedure existed for making them updated locally so a fresh install could be done. This request should probably be directed to the developers themselves.
