RE: [Cooker] M$ Exchange server
Does anyone know if there is a Linux Exchange client out there any where ? i don't think so but i believe that the folks at Ximian works on that... -- MandrakeSoft Inc http://www.chmouel.org --Chmouel I'm using Netscape to connect to our Exchange server - seems to work just great. Of course this box is setup with samba. What a nice mess ... Netscape is not Exchange client and SAMBA has nothing to do with it at all :) The best case is if admins allow IMAP access. If the problem is security - at least fetchmail supports NTLM authentication so that passwords are encrypted (really encrypted, not just obfuscated) the same way as normal NT workstation does. I fetch mail from Exchange onto Unix server using fetchmail. I have also seen rumors about fetchmail being (having been) ported to Cygwin. I belive, there are some more IMAP clients that support NTLM. But what is actually wrong with OL2000? It is not just as bad; is just because it comes from Microsoft? -andrej

The fonts are NOT fixed I just did a new install and advanced editor is not usable... Or if you view a text file inside of Konqueror.. This is a must fix before release.I have a whole office that wants to start moving to Linux but they saw the fonts and said no way. Absolutely correct. I also hope Daouda and the guys make all the webmasters out there happy by increasing the Minimum Font Size in Konqueror's web browsing mode to 12 or there abouts. That way the pages will look like their creators intended. And as a bonus the text will be readable. :) Before 8.0 goes gold, please. Regards, Mattias

[Cooker] Konqueror User-agent
Any body knows what is the format for the server mask in the user-agent configuration of Konqueror? What about precedence when there is more than one definition matching a server? For example, if I want to put a definition that applies to all servers as a default definition, how do I write the server mask, "." "*", or what? It is not documented in the help, and I couldn't find it anywhere else. BTW, does any body knows if Konqueror is more standards compliant than the latest MSIE before 6.0? I have noticed a disturbing trend lately, more and more pages fail to work nicely with Netscape (specially under Unix) and almost always, when I look at the URL it is an ASP, and most of the time the error is something in the lines of "VBscript error at line ### Object this and that". I started thinking that it is just sloppy programming on an specific site, but as I have found more and more of these problems, I have tried them under Windows, and guess what? it works. I don't know crap about ASP, but I do know a lot of clue less sites are starting to use it because of the availability of lots of object libraries. And not to bring conspiracy theories, but I am beginning to think that MicroShaft may be selling this to companies as a platform independent software (i.e. web server software duh!), when in fact they could be using client side Windows components in some of their object libraries? If this is true, the Linux community must put this on the public view. Anybody with more ASP knowledge want to throw in your 2 cents? -- Eugenio Diaz, BSEE/BSCE Linux Engineer [EMAIL PROTECTED]

They will likely think that something went wrong during installation and around a rather critical file. Basically, all I'm suggesting is that we treat /etc/passwd and similar files like XF86Config... create it, never install it. After that, specific packages can add or remove as needed, including setup. I disagree. I regularly go through and search for .rpmnew files and then compare what's in them with my own versions. Sometimes there are new defaults or options that weren't there when I did my own customizations. I then decide to either toss my file and start with the .rpmnew version, or apply some changes to my own. I do the same as you with rpmnew, rpmorig and rpmsave files, but I think you are wrong. The diff technique is difficult to apply to the password or group files, just because of the nature of those files. For instance, there may be entries that are not on the defult file, but where *not* created by you, instead by some rpm or non-rpm software package install. These issues may be easy to sort out by a competent admin that knows each and every one of the IDs byu memory, but can become very confusing for the average Unix competent joe. They issue at hand is that having an rpmnew file implies there are changes to be made, when in fact the setup rpm package runs the update-password utility. You do one of the two, but not both ... Besides, the default master lists are always available as: /usr/share/base-passwd/group.master /usr/share/base-passwd/passwd.master So why also have them as rpmnew? = Eugenio Diaz, BSEE/BSCE Linux Engineer [EMAIL PROTECTED] __ Do You Yahoo!? [Cooker] unable to add mirror to rpmdrake in 'Define sources'
I have been reading cooker daily since 8.0b1, done a search for rpmdrake, queried qa, and am surprised to have not found exactly this problem, so it is likely user error. This is now for a fresh install of beta3 on /, /home, /usr reiserfs partitions but seems typical of my experiences w/rpmdrake in 8.0beta*. I first noticed this problem when trying to add a security mirror in response to the pop-up but the process stops at 'Please wait' shuttlebar while adding the source. Subsequently, I have called rpmdrake from a terminal window to be able to enjoy the more verbose indications of failure. This represents perhaps a half-dozen attempts to add a cooker source after 'updating the mirror list', choosing a mirror, and verifying that the mirror is online via Netscape at wtfo, chalmers, carroll, et al. Although I leave 'login' and 'password' untouched, terminal reports a successful login: cooker: 'chalmerscooker' 'ftp://ftp.chl.chalmers.se/pub/Linux/distributions/Mandrake-devel/cooker/Mandrake/RPMS' 'with' '../base/hdlist.cz' --06:27:40-- ftp://ftp.chl.chalmers.se/pub/Linux/distributions/Mandrake-devel/cooker/Mandrake/descriptions = `/var/cache/urpmi/partial/.listing' Connecting to ftp.chl.chalmers.se:21... connected! Logged in! == TYPE I ... done. == CWD pub/Linux/distributions/Mandrake-devel/cooker/Mandrake ... done. == PORT ... done.== LIST ... ...(passage of time) Error in server response, closing control connection. Retrying. This reiterates every 2 min 10 sec, or so, and Ctrl-c returns the prompt, but wait. Rpmdrake is gone but, within the 2 min period, the output resumes on the terminal, apparently due to the persistence of 'usr/bin/perl usr/sbin/urpmi.addmedia' as reported by kpm. Killing that process changes the output somewhat: --07:21:03-- ftp://ftp.chl.chalmers.se/pub/Linux/distributions/Mandrake-devel/cooker/Mandrake/base/hdlist.cz (try: 3) = `/var/cache/urpmi/partial/hdlist.cz' Connecting to ftp.chl.chalmers.se:21... connected! Just to avoid a repeat of an earlier fiasco, I'd like to point out that the present beta 3 seems to lack 'joe', the text editor. [Cooker] Mandrake 8. Beta 3 probs
Virgin install of mandrake 8 beta ona dual Celeron BP6 board. Installation by itself went off without too many problems: * The text editor joe, as previously mentioned, is not part of the installation. * Apache/httpd does not work AT ALL after this install (the usual (defunct) message during a ps ax, and problems with what appears to be mod_ssl, guessing from the logs. Commenting the mod_ssl configuration out of the httpd.conf file won't make it work. I realize apache is a minor, hardly every used application known as a 'web-server' so it could have easily slipped through the cracks of intensive earlier beta testing, but myself, and 56% of the world's web-server users would appreciate a functional httpd installation :-) In addition, does this still use the sgi patches, or has that finally been removed? (Could someone tell me if it matters which font server you use as to whether you will see anti aliasing ?) Boy, was I in for a shock ! I must be doing something wrong ! Surely ! Gone were all the elegantly rendered fonts, gone were the nice curvey fonts, gone was the sensible scaling. Replaced with spindly, jagged and 3/4 the size fonts. Except for what should have been bold letters. These all went to the other extreme, huge bloated squidgy letters that looked silly because the were still 3/4 the size they should have been ! Has anyone else experienced this, and does anyone have a solution ? Owen The rendering of fonts in KDE2 was not that good... preview text from Konquerer was only readable by increasing the size, it was horrible an blobby. Now, with the Mandrake beta it has affected my shells in KDE. Konsole is unusable, I get bars across the text and it is very distorted. I am now using the Gnome terminal because that's the only one that doesn't distort text. I have my KDE display settings for text on large (which I hate, but at least can read) and only ten fonts are available in KDE (in spite of installing all the X fonts and importing some Windows ones). Plus, very poor language support for KDE. Drakfont crashes when importing Windows fonts as well. The windoze mail program is not good, but after the latest beta failing to install X without breaking it, not creating files for such minor things as Postfix, and other little init problems, I'm temporally using the dreaded Gates OS. -- Anna
