I'm using Netscape to connect to our Exchange server - seems to work just
great. Of course this box is setup with samba.

What a nice mess ... Netscape is not Exchange client and SAMBA has nothing to
do with it at all :)

The best case is if admins allow IMAP access. If the problem is security - at
least fetchmail supports NTLM authentication so that passwords are encrypted
(really encrypted, not just obfuscated) the same way as normal NT workstation
does. I fetch mail from Exchange onto Unix server using fetchmail. I have also
seen rumors about fetchmail being (having been) ported to Cygwin.

I belive, there are some more IMAP clients that support NTLM.

But what is actually wrong with OL2000? It is not just as bad; is just because
it comes from Microsoft?

[Cooker] Look of mdk 8.0beta3 install (for now)

2001-04-05 Thread Vlatko Kosturjak

HI!
Greetz from Croatia!

I downloaded MDK8.0BETA3 and tried to install. ReiserFS, GeForce and so on..
and everything went fine...although I have some suggestions:

- make an option to DISABLE supermount
- maybe under every picture/billboard should be some comment like
'Designers Team', 'Programmers at work', or some better comment...
- i want to see what package is installing, maybe to make some advanced
button near the picture, so I can switch to table where I can see
what is installing and how much time it takes...
- there is only Croatian Standard keymap. where is Croatian Programmers
keymap? (I sent it to Pablo...)

More will come when I try to play with system...

The fonts are NOT fixed I just did a new install and advanced editor is
not usable... Or if you view a text file inside of Konqueror.. This is
a
must fix before release.I have a whole office that wants to start
moving to Linux but they saw the fonts and said no way.

Absolutely correct.

I also hope Daouda and the guys make all the webmasters out there happy by
increasing the Minimum Font Size in Konqueror's web browsing mode to 12 or
there abouts. That way the pages will look like their creators intended. And
as a bonus the text will be readable. :)

Before 8.0 goes gold, please.

so it is *inserting* the char instead of replacing the last char.

in anyone else experiencing the same behavior ?

what could be the problem ?

if all other people are having this problem too, is cooker supplying good

PS : which RPM stores the VERSION info, that tells me which cooker version
have I installed ? (I think there is VERSION for the RPM set, and VERSION
for the installer. Are both these versions stored somewhere on the

[Cooker] Ati Radeon and Printer

2001-04-05 Thread Serge

Hi

With the Mandrake 8.0 beta 2, the parallele port for my printer was detected.
I could not use my ati radeon 63 mb ddr. It was detected by kudzu but
harddrake ignored it.

With beta 3, the parallele port of the printer is not detected at all [so
cannot use my printer (HP 710C)]. My ati Radeon is still "useless" like with
the beta 2.

i have:
- an AMD Athlon 500 mhz processor
- a 64 MB DDR radeon card
- MAG XJ796 monitor
- 128 MB memory.

By the way , it happened just once when i installed again and again LM 8.0
beta3, that during the X configuration, after detecting the card, i could
confirm if the configuration was OK. All the other times, during the
confirmation, my monitor went in the sleep mode. Then after the boot, my
monitor went in sleep mode too.

Thanx for your help.

[Cooker] Konqueror User-agent

2001-04-05 Thread Eugenio Diaz

Any body knows what is the format for the server mask in the user-agent
configuration of Konqueror? What about precedence when there is more
than one definition matching a server?

For example, if I want to put a definition that applies to all servers
as a default definition, how do I write the server mask, "." "*", or
what? It is not documented in the help, and I couldn't find it anywhere
else.

BTW, does any body knows if Konqueror is more standards compliant than
the latest MSIE before 6.0?

I have noticed a disturbing trend lately, more and more pages fail to
work nicely with Netscape (specially under Unix) and almost always, when
I look at the URL it is an ASP, and most of the time the error is
something in the lines of "VBscript error at line ### Object this and
that". I started thinking that it is just sloppy programming on an
specific site, but as I have found more and more of these problems, I
have tried them under Windows, and guess what? it works. I don't know
crap about ASP, but I do know a lot of clue less sites are starting to
use it because of the availability of lots of object libraries. And not
to bring conspiracy theories, but I am beginning to think that
MicroShaft may be selling this to companies as a platform independent
software (i.e. web server software duh!), when in fact they could be
using client side Windows components in some of their object libraries?
If this is true, the Linux community must put this on the public view.
Anybody with more ASP knowledge want to throw in your 2 cents?

[Cooker] Monitor detection?

2001-04-05 Thread Mattias Dahlberg

I have a Nokia 447PRO and it is in the list of monitors. During the
"recommended" install DrakX didn't ask me what monitor I had, so I figured it
chose 447PRO automatically. But judging from the poor selection of
resolutions (only 640x480 and 800x600) in XFdrake I suppose it didn't detect
my monitor correctly anyway. It did seem to detect my graphics card, G400,
nicely though.

Nokia's 447PRO easily makes 1024x768 in 120Hz and 1280x1024 in 90Hz.

This was with Beta 3, btw.

Just enter the toplevel adress of any side to match all locations
underneath it. For example when you want all sites at
http://www.foobar.com to receive fake user agent strings
enter 'foobar.com'.

First entry matches.

2001-04-05 Thread Christian Zoffoli

I noticed that PAM of the Mandrake distro seems to be affected by an old
bug (dated Fri, 14 Jul 2000 06:05:58 -
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=67211) on the
pam_mkhomedir module.

-
Debian Bug report logs - #67211

"Unlike adduser's behavior pam_mkhomedir doesn't seem to recurse
directories inside skel. This minor inconvenience breaks things like
placing a qmail
Maildir into /etc/skel. "

-

This problem seems to be corrected with
ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/p/pam/pam_0.72-18.diff.gz

I compiled pam-0.74-4mdk with pam_mkhomedir of the Debian distro
(0.72-18) ...and now all seems to work fine.
On the attachment you can find the patch.

Nothing for me, but think about it from a newbie perspective. They will
likely think that something went wrong during installation and around a
  rather critical file.

Basically, all I'm suggesting is that we treat /etc/passwd and similar
files like XF86Config... create it, never install it. After that, specific
packages can add or remove as needed, including setup.

I disagree. I regularly go through and search for .rpmnew files and then
compare what's in them with my own versions. Sometimes there are new
defaults or options that weren't there when I did my own customizations. I
then decide to either toss my file and start with the .rpmnew version, or
apply some changes to my own.

I do the same as you with rpmnew, rpmorig and rpmsave files, but I think you
are wrong. The diff technique is difficult to apply to the password or group
files, just because of the nature of those files. For instance, there may be
entries that are not on the defult file, but where *not* created by you,
instead by some rpm or non-rpm software package install. These issues may be
easy to sort out by a competent admin that knows each and every one of the IDs
byu memory, but can become very confusing for the average Unix competent joe.

They issue at hand is that having an rpmnew file implies there are changes to
be made, when in fact the setup rpm package runs the update-password utility.
You do one of the two, but not both ... Besides, the default master lists are
always available as:

/usr/share/base-passwd/group.master
/usr/share/base-passwd/passwd.master

So why also have them as rpmnew?

 First entry matches.

Do you mean that a default, or matches all (read below) entry should be put

[Cooker] unable to add mirror to rpmdrake in 'Define sources'

2001-04-05 Thread Rolf Pedersen

I have been reading cooker daily since 8.0b1, done a search for rpmdrake, queried qa,
and
am surprised to have not found exactly this problem, so it is likely user error. This
is
now for a fresh install of beta3 on /, /home, /usr reiserfs partitions but seems
typical
of my experiences w/rpmdrake in 8.0beta*. I first noticed this problem when trying to
add
a security mirror in response to the pop-up but the process stops at 'Please wait'
shuttlebar while adding the source. Subsequently, I have called rpmdrake from a
terminal
window to be able to enjoy the more verbose indications of failure. This represents
perhaps a half-dozen attempts to add a cooker source after 'updating the mirror list',
choosing a mirror, and verifying that the mirror is online via Netscape at wtfo,
chalmers,
carroll, et al.

Although I leave 'login' and 'password' untouched, terminal reports a successful login:

cooker: 'chalmerscooker'
'ftp://ftp.chl.chalmers.se/pub/Linux/distributions/Mandrake-devel/cooker/Mandrake/RPMS'
'with' '../base/hdlist.cz'

...
done.
== PORT ... done.== LIST ...
...(passage of time)
Error in server response, closing control connection.
Retrying.

This reiterates every 2 min 10 sec, or so, and Ctrl-c returns the prompt, but wait.
Rpmdrake is gone but, within the 2 min period, the output resumes on the terminal,
apparently due to the persistence of 'usr/bin/perl usr/sbin/urpmi.addmedia' as
reported by kpm. Killing that process changes the output somewhat:

--07:21:03--
ftp://ftp.chl.chalmers.se/pub/Linux/distributions/Mandrake-devel/cooker/Mandrake/base/hdlist.cz
  (try: 3) = `/var/cache/urpmi/partial/hdlist.cz'

Error in server response, closing control connection.
Retrying.

== TYPE I ... done.  == CWD

== PORT ... done.== RETR hdlist.cz ...

...which appears to be the work of 'wget-NP /var/cache/urpmi/partial' and killing
*that* has kept the terminal quiet for over an hour, now. This has been consistent
(since
the appearance of the 'Security mirror' pop-up) through an upgrade of b2 to b3, clean
install of b3, and upgrade to rpmdrake-1.3-36mdk and urpmi-1.5-27mdk. Anything?

Thanks.

There are no space left n your /var filesystem, because urpmi is eating all the

But the point is that you don't need access to the devices when you build
the ISO image, only when you actually burn the CD.

mkisofs should be:

-rwxr-xr-xroot root /usr/bin/mkisofs

i.e. not set-gid or set-uid, just a normal binary.

As for cdrecord, it MUST be SUID root because it locks itself in

cdda2wav has some real time features and to support them it is SUID

So we make all these utilities be root.cdwriter owned and use goup

But mkisofs doesn't require any privileges to run (unlike cdrecord,

[Cooker] Mandrake 8. Beta 3 probs

2001-04-05 Thread mdk mailin list (Harry)

Virgin install of mandrake 8 beta ona dual Celeron BP6 board. Installation
by itself went off without too many problems:

* The text editor joe, as previously mentioned, is not part of the
installation.

* Apache/httpd does not work AT ALL after this install (the usual (defunct)
message during a ps ax, and problems with what appears to be mod_ssl,
guessing from the logs. Commenting the mod_ssl configuration out of the
httpd.conf file won't make it work.

I realize apache is a minor, hardly every used application known as a
'web-server' so it could have easily slipped through the cracks of intensive
earlier beta testing, but myself, and 56% of the world's web-server users
would appreciate a functional httpd installation :-)

In addition, does this still use the sgi patches, or has that finally been
removed?

Okay, what about installing two mkisofs? One sgid cdwriter like it already

mkisofs doesn't need any of the devices you've just listed. Your comment
holds certainly true for cdrecord, and to some extent also for cdda2wav -
but in no way for mkisofs.

As for cdrecord, it MUST be SUID root because it locks itself in

I don't care about cdrecord - because you are exactly right about what you
write.

root suid (or guid) binaries are very, very _bad_.
better giving accesse to a sub-system than to the whole system in case

Yes, of course - but if a user has enough free space, he could also fill it
with dd if=/dev/zero of=BANG - how is that ANY different than mkisofs?

Has anyone else experienced this, and does anyone have a solution ?

 Owen

The rendering of fonts in KDE2 was not that good... preview text from
Konquerer was only readable by increasing the size, it was horrible an
blobby. Now, with the Mandrake beta it has affected my shells in KDE.
Konsole is unusable, I get bars across the text and it is very
distorted. I am now using the Gnome terminal because that's the only one
that doesn't distort text. I have my KDE display settings for text on
large (which I hate, but at least can read) and only ten fonts are
available in KDE (in spite of installing all the X fonts and importing
some Windows ones). Plus, very poor language support for KDE.
Drakfont crashes when importing Windows fonts as well.

The windoze mail program is not good, but after the latest beta failing
to install X without breaking it, not creating files for such minor
things as Postfix, and other little init problems, I'm temporally using
the dreaded Gates OS.

I am, however, getting a strange message about "unable to stat " one of my

Fixed in last kernel.

and to let these users having access to the required devices (/dev/sg*,
/dev/scd*, /dev/pg*, and /dev/pcd* [the /dev/p* devices are for parallel
  writers])..

But why should not anyone be able to create an iso image? mkisofs doesn't
do anything remotely harmful (besides writing an awful lot of data - but if
the user has the space, why not?).

this was needed in the old days in order to read old sessions in
multi-sessions mode. it seems not anymore mandatory.
If someone want to test multi-mode ...

mkisofs doesn't need any of the devices you've just listed. Your comment
holds certainly true for cdrecord, and to some extent also for cdda2wav -
but in no way for mkisofs.

Yes it needs it. See above for multi-session mode

As for cdrecord, it MUST be SUID root because it locks itself in

I don't care about cdrecord - because you are exactly right about what you
 write.

root suid (or guid) binaries are very, very _bad_.
better giving accesse to a sub-system than to the whole system in case
  of security hole.

Yes, of course - but if a user has enough free space, he could also fill it
with dd if=/dev/zero of=BANG - how is that ANY different than
 mkisofs?

i was not speaking of filling the hd. I spoke of security hole such
as buffer overflow. Imagine such an overflow on cd title wich let you
run a root shell ?? Better a cdburner shell than a root shell!

[Cooker] Telnet

2001-04-05 Thread Ray

I have done sereral install of 8.0 beta and have yet to find a place to
install telnet client and server during the install. Sure I can add it later
but telnet is one of the main stream programs for *nix.
Also the groups are nice but there should be an everything button and then
let me deselect items. Some people (developers) need to have just about
everything install and don't want to go back and install packages each time
they do something new.

nop. Mkisofs may need to read previous sessions in multi-session mode,
which requires to be suid root.

Okay, what about installing two mkisofs? One sgid cdwriter like it already
is, and one the normal 644 way? This would allow normal users to create iso
images, and just on the instance when a multisession cd is to be created,
 they'd call this special binary.

if we began to do this, then dead threads god will resume its holy
threads such as why not provide a second glibc compiled with -g (and
the same for all major libs), a kernel for K6, Athlon, P3, a glibc for
PIII, ...

2 words : disk bloat :-(

Hum , kickerc config file lost in hyper space at last built .
Corrected in next David build.

In relation to this, maybe a better description for the -flat list-
button on the bottom of the group screen could be added some where!
