[Cooker] Printing Problems - Tonights Install
I have an HP-990C with Duplex on a windows machine that I print to via cups which I seem to be having trouble with tonight: 1. In non-duplex mode, the top and bottom margins are not printed as set using xpp (tm=36, bm=36). By the looks of it, the top is missing and the bottom is twice the size specified. 2. Also, for each line containing text, the far right side has a vertical bar printed which is printed outside the right margin (lm=36, rm=36). 3. In duplex mode, the front page appears ok, but the back page has a top margin of about 3x the top margin setting and the text is cut off at the bottom. Also, the veritical bar appears on the right side of the page on the front and on the left side on the back. I am using the (recommended) hpijs driver, cups is 1.1.14-2mdk, foomatic is 1.1-0.20020220mdk, ghostscript is 6.53-1mdk Note: The last time I did a full install was 2002-02-06, the same hardware/printer worked perfectly in both modes. Any other info I can supply? Dave

[Cooker] net.agent now working properly, suspend to ram problem continues
net.agent properly brings the network back up after pccard remove/insert and after restarting the service. However, this version of pcmcia still causes my Dell Inspiron 8000 to reboot when I try to resume from a suspend to ram. A curiosity here... I know that there is a seperate pcmcia package (pcmcia-cs-3.1.31-2mdk), but it appears that each kernel-source comes with its own pcmcia. Which one gets used? I suspect this is a kernel source issue since kernel-2.4.17-16mdk allows me to suspend to ram and return without issue even with pcmcia service running. = SI Reasoning [EMAIL PROTECTED] A requirement of creativity is that it contributes to change. One would argue that non-glibc dependent software would have no dependency against common-licenses, but that's quite sufficient for today, since more than 99% of software needs glibc, right? Abel

Usually software maintainers have need to specify versions for required libraries, due to incompatible API or bug fixed on newer libraries. [Cooker] can't disable face browser in kdm
My machine is part of a large NIS domain with over 60,000 users. KDM actually handles all of those face icons surprisingly well. It only takes an extra 20 seconds or so to get the login window. However, I'd really like disable that feature. I can disable it in the KDE Control Center, and I see the changes made to /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc. But somehow that feature keeps getting reenabled when I reboot. Perhaps there's a particular package I can uninstall? Until this is fixed, I'll just stick with runlevel 3 (this is actually the first time I've bothered with runlevel 5)
[Cooker] beta3 install notes
MDK 8.2beta3 == total ownage! Great work everyone! I spent several hours yesterday trying to get dri working on my new Dell (Radeon VE) after installing redhat 7.2. After compiling a new kernel, new xfree86, new drm and ati (from gatos), it still didn't work. Gatos and ati's drm seem to be really disorganized. After installing beta3, dri worked out of the box, all hardware was perfectly detected and configured. I'm now happily playing Chromium within 30 seconds of completing the installation :) A few minor notes: During the installtion, I was mucking around with the disk setup and noticed that if you failed to format a partition, you get a "mount failed" error message that doesn't help very much. It would be nice if the error message, at least, listed which filesystem(s) failed to mount. On the Package Selection page, "Scientific Workstation" doesn't have a popup description. Also, the popup decriptions need a border or a contrasting color background. During the package installation, the "Internet and Messaging" page has text that overlaps the icon at the top, kinda awkward looking. Same with the "Games" page, and the "MandrakeCampus" page. Some awkward English during the package installation pages: 09-MDKcampus.pl: "and most of all free way?", sounds odd to me, but I can't think of a concise way to say it better. 12-MDKstore.pl: "available on our e-store", did anyone else cringe when they saw the buzzword-complient term: "e-store"? 13-Nvert.pl "To access to more commercial informations, please contact us on the following toll free:", is just wrong. How about, "For information on our commercial services, please contact us at the following toll free number:" Also, at least in the US, the 1 is seperated from the area code like "1-877-MDKCORP" or "(877)-MDKCORP". I prefer the first form. "Want to get to know the Open Source community. Be a Part? Set root password, if the passwords don't match, the cursor should return to the first password box. The Summary page looks awkward with 5 rows (mouse, keyboard, timezone, printer, and sound card), but only the first 4 have buttons to change those settings. Sound card is floating around looking really weird. It leaves the user wondering if it should be a button. Pretty insignificant stuff so far. Again, great work! PS: I just had the error, "sendmail: fatal: No maildrop directory maildrop: No such file or directory" when trying to send this email. I had to manually run 'postfix check'. Any chance this could be done automatically? Perhaps the postfix init script should handle this.

[Cooker] More 8.2beta3 feedback
I finished an 8.2beta3 pcmcia install over NFS on my Sony VAIO PCG-F580 tonight and, well, I'm having some problems. The first thing I noticed after I had to do a hard reset (it didn't reboot on its own as it normally does) was that my network wasn't up which I thought was quite strange as I'd just done an install over the network. Everything was configured, but for some reason, my /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 had onboot=no. I would think this should be set to "yes" by default, especially as obviously I'm wanting to be on the network. I set it to "yes", restarted the network and life was good. Second, was something that I'd experienced in RH 7.0 (I think). After X was configured and it went into test mode, my mouse cursor is a big fuzzy square. I don't know what I'd done previously to fix this, but I can't seem to do it right now (which is quite frustrating to say the least not being able to use X). Here are what XF86 packages are installed: XFree86-4.2.0-6mdk XFree86-compat-libs-4.1.0-2mdk XFree86-xfs-4.2.0-6mdk XFree86-75dpi-fonts-4.2.0-6mdk XFree86-100dpi-fonts-4.2.0-6mdk XFree86-devel-4.2.0-6mdk XFree86-server-4.2.0-6mdk XFree86-libs-4.2.0-6mdk And I'll attach my XF86Config-4 Cheers PS: So can anyone help me to resolve this cursor problem? :) __ Do You Yahoo!? Start KDE with xinit /usr/bin/startkde -- :0 and bingo - crash. I selected English as the primary language during install, Japanese, Icelandic and German as secondary languages. I also installed kinput2 and FreeWnn from cooker so that I could possibly type in some Japanese! I put straces up at http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~narfi/xinit.en_US.out http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~narfi/xinit.ja.EUC.out http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~narfi/xinit.ja.UTF-8.out Maybe they well you something more than they tell me! The first strace there only for reference. Of course KDE did not crash with the locale set to en_US. Don't hesitate to ask if you have any further questions/comments. Narfi.

[Cooker] Cooker: ghostscript 6.53 fails on sample gs files
I'm running a fully Cooker-ized 8.2 beta3. Updated at 8pm central time from sunet. Here's the crux of the problem: ghostscript fails on these sample files: /usr/share/ghostscript/6.53/examples/cjk/*.ps These are all files which use the new CID-keyed fonts. They are for all 3 languages: Chinese, Japanese and Korean. I have other sample files myself which work really well on my 8.1 system (after I had fixed a bug in the gs/vflib setup) but fail on gs 6.53 in cooker. Just ask if you want one. setup: 8.2 beta3, English as the primary language, Japanese, Icelandic and German as secondary languages. Has now been updated to cooker. Feel free to ask if you have any questions, Narfi.

Hi Version (fmirror ftp.uninett.no) Mandrake Linux Cooker-i586 20020222 21:14 /ChangeLog/1.659/Thu Feb 21 14:57:18 2002// I read in " Mandrake Linux Community Newsletter -- Issue #31" about "Business Case of the Week " and installed openoffice. The setup declared that no functioning java was found in my fresh install, and earlier I got that the delivered program was beta and thus contained no printing capacity. As usual on a en-GB box no fine Euro. I think that it would be better to advice a user to download either the Sun or the IBM package for java and skip this version of openoffice and go for the Sun version if this is to be used in a future 'business case', where the Euro certainly is a must. regards guran -- Mandrake Linux 8.2 Cooker kernel-2.4.17.20mdk-1-1mdk version:2002-02-22-21:14

[Cooker] Pat thread on PM and Anachronis
Tried this on 8.2 B3 version. Everything installed OK except for sound (had to start from hard drake). I used expert install from CD and chose journalized EXT3. I have PM installed on this box. It found the EXT3 partition and booted it properly. The one thing that Anacronis buys you is the ability to comvert one file system ot another easily (PM won"t do this yet) My 2 cents

[Cooker] NS4 gone?
Just seen this: netscape 4 was removed from cooker, is it on the beta 3 isos? I hope that mdk will keep ns4 because it's the only browser with a working java machine. I've tested all browsers with several java packages (kaffe, sun, ibm) and *none* of these combinations worked reliably with java applets over ssl. maybe this is nothing and ns4 will be back in a few days

[Cooker] install problems with Mandrak 8.2 beta 3
hi, I am having fatal problems installing beta 3. I am now running beta 2 and have installed beta 1 no probs so I hope it is not me being dumb. OK details. Harware: Athlon 800Mhz, 512Mb Ram, 2xIDE hd I am making a bunch of RAID arrays at install. boot, swap, var are on the slower disk, no raid root is raid 1 across both disks usr/home are setup RAID 0 across both disks First choosing a busmouse other than standard (I have IBM 3 button busmouse) non fatal but ugly: an error occured: unknown device atibm (caller is install_steps_gtk:/usr/bin/perl_install/install_steps_gtk:198 then I left the machine and came back to a fatal error on the GUI: segfault: seems like memory is missing on one of the consoles I saw the error: rpmdb: /var/lib/rpm/Basenames: no such file or directory I ran the install a few more times and made the above file with mkdir and touch. this error went but got similar failures and on the error console unreferenced page: 2810 . .2811 so on for lots of sequential numbers I was formating the RAID both ext3 and Reiserfs I hope this helps QA ! Well, try as I might - built kernel, booted to runlevel 1, stopped PCMCIA, stopped APMD, followed all other ideas on the list - I am delivering an Acer Extensa laptop on Sunday with Mandrake 8.1 installed so it can be displayed for all to see at trade fairs. Quite what an impression it will make when every time the lid is closed or the mains lead is plugged in, or the PCMCIA modem is removed it simply locks solid remains to be seen. I suppose the only "improvement" is that the kernel crash report no longer appears, the screen does come back but that's it ! But out of the door it must go ! In all other respects it pulls off tricks that I have now idea if they can even be done under Window$, it's just such a shame it's going to be seen as flaky and unstable :-( Owen On Tuesday 12 Feb 2002 5:34 am, you wrote: > I have compiled a laptop friendly kernel for the Dell > Inspiron 8000. [Cooker] Problem with KDE newsticker applet
Greetings: the newsticker applet in KDE in 8.2beta3 seems to have a problem -- specifically, the news headlines are correctly shown, but clicking on the headline does NOT open a browser to show the article. Also, right-clicking on the ticker brings up the menu showing the current articles. Again, clicking on the menu options fails (the article is NOT displayed). This same behavior was exhibited in mandrake 8.1. Note that the "correct behavior" (opening the article in konqueror) does work properly in redhat 7.2. Thanks, Curt

[Cooker] New to list: Introducing Myself
Greetings: I subscribed to the Cooker list today, and am writing in order to introduce myself. I am a (recently unemployed) software engineer, and spent the past seven years doing Product Support (ie bugfixes), Development, and Testing for the AS/400 operating system. Due to the recent layoffs, I have some time on my hands :) therefore, I decided to install Mandrake 8.2 beta 3 and do some testing in order to keep my skills sharp... I started using Linux way back in 1992, with Slackware 1.x (running kernel 1.0.59, if I remember correctly -- I think at the time Slackware came with 0.93preXX but 1.0.59 had just been released, so I upgraded right away... and have been using Linux ever since, for one purpose or another. My primary box has always been windows, since the only REAL use I had for a home system was games -- you can't exactly do AS/400 coding on a measly PC!!! Recently, I have been running ClarkConnect 0.8.1 (a redhat7.1 based firewall / IP masq distribution) on an old 486, and have been playing with mandrake 8.1 and redhat 7.2. A few days ago, I had to wipe out my linux partition (hard drive problems & some strange conflict with XP) so I took the opportunity today to install mandrake 8.2 Beta3. So far, so good :) I have a few bugs to report, based on the install, but will send those as separate issues. If anyone has a specific area they feel needs testing, let me know and I'll concentrate on those areas. Otherwise I'll just do general testing and report what I find (with workarounds or fixes if I can) Thanks, Curt Curt Schemmel [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[Cooker] [cosmetics] giving 8.2 a finished look
While installing Mandrake 8.2beta2 I thought to report this two cosmetic correction for the next beta: 1) If you go back to "create a new user" while installing Mandrake 8.2 (you simply forgot someone and remember him while checking what daemons should run) there is no cursor blinking (first you think there is no way to fill the dialog). Anyway, it works ok even without a cursor...but it can confuse people. 2) I say this on Mandrake 8.1 already: If you start KDE the first time you get this program wanting to help you set up KDE. One email-program you should probably not be called "kmali" but better "kmail" Ok...these are not "real" bugs.but these little thinks can make a whole product look unfinished Bye Jens Henrik

I just tried to install Mandrake 8.2beta2 using the alternative bootfloppy "cdrom.img-2.2.19-BADZ5" because of a problem with the standard 2.4.17-15mdkBOOT. This makes it impossible to install Mandrake 8.2 using the alternative bootdisk "cdrom.img-2.2.19-BADZ5". This is what I found on console 1: == rpm database closed closing install.log file running: ldconfig with root /mnt Install took: 0:25:53 Installed: 824MB(df), 626MB(rpm) warning: already displayed at /usr/bin/perl-install/install_steps_gtk.pm line 682 starting step 'choose Packages' getFile Mandrake /base/hdlists: errorOpeningFile Mandrake/base/hdlists warning: no hdlists found at /usr/bin/perl-install/pkgs.pm line 357 == (This happend being in expert-mode) I managed to get around the problem with 2.4.17-15mdkBOOT (because of a hint using "ide=nodma") and this error did not happen - I could install Mandrake8.2 . The secound one you can get an easy workaround: You can choose ext3 while using kernel 2.2.19 without an ext3-module. This is kind of confusing because the partitions are formated without any error so you think everything is fine - but of course trying to mount this partitions does not work. So the Installer can not go on. What about showing only filesystem which the kernel does support by checking it before the user chooses ext3. I was using the expert mode, no idea what happens in user-mode(but I think ext3 is standard). If I can do any tests, go ahead and ask me. Hope this bug-report helps fixing them Bye Jens Henrik
[Cooker] MySQL-devel is a prereq, but there's no such package
I'm in the process of trying to rebuild the cooker snort SRPM and one of the BuildRequires is MySQL-devel which doesn't appear to be a standard cooker package anymore. [Cooker] DrakeConfig.real
Hi, Whenever I am running any applet through the Control Center, I keep getting a message saying that the application is broken as it didn't show up and that I should reinstall the program. The header of the message is always drakeconfig.real. Any ideas? Also, why does the Log applet not work? Unless its just me. Matt

Re: [Cooker] A Potential Mandrake Failure - Documentation (repost from NG)
I agree with you entirely on this point. I am finding that in most cases when something can't be done with Linux, it is because it is more work to find out how to do it than it is worth, not because it is actually an impossibility. Along this line, I can see a lot of potential value to simply rearchiving this existing data in its raw form into a topical treed structure which would eliminate the need of text searching to find answers. From that point on, comments could be posted and existing data could be more easily edited into detailed documentation which at this point in time, simply doesn't exist. In turn, that documentation could simply be burned to CDROM periodically as Mandrake itself is updated. Once such an archive were created, information could be pulled from a wide array of sources and either copied or linked into it on an ongoing basis. The HUGE PROBLEM that Linux faces in terms of documentation is the fact that 90% of it will be in some way obsolete within a year. No other existing technology faces this kind of problem. Linux development is web based and extremely dynamic. The creation of ducumentation must also be web based and extremely dynamic. This also would seem to indicate that putting a lot of effort on archiving older data from newsgroups and forums would not be very productive and that the greatest benefit would be acheived by maintaining and updating such an archive going forward. MUO is absolutely the best spot to host such an effort IMHO. Re: [Cooker] HD install from the isos does not ask for the secondiso...
I think the problem is that there is not enough time between the releases of the betas... I work during the week and I rely on Mandrake for all of my work and I also voluntarely maintain a website with friends so I dont have much time for testing during the week... Maybe the solution would be to start releasing the betas earlier and make sure people do not have to burn CDs everytime. It should be possible to upgrade packages while testing so only thoses who failed with the installation program need to reinstall. If testing is only available to those who own burners, then most of the people who pays for their distro (as I and a lot of businesses do...) can not report bugs they will/would encounter...
