Well at one point in time all those images were on the Eterm site IIRC.
If there's a real problem with a specific image or images then fine
let's take them out...

This looks like semi-correct behavior. dhcpcd should exit if the lease time
is infinite, since it means the IP won't change and won't need to be renewed.
However, the "infinite" time seems wrong, given that this is a cable modem
provider. Maybe they just assign an IP based on NIC MAC address. Anyway, if
it works for more than 2 days straight, it's probably OK.

[Cooker] Beta 4 Dead Mouse on Install!!

2002-08-26 Thread esko

I have a ECS K7S5A motherboard. I have the computer connected to a Linksys
SVIEW04 electronic KVM switchbox. The mouse will not move during the install.

The exact same port was used without any problems with an Asus A7V
motherboard. An Asus A7V133 motherboard currently hooked up also has no
problems. I forget what the last computer connected to it uses for a
motherboard but the mouse also works without problems on it.

I installed the latest Lycoris distro (out of curiosity on the K7S5A and the
mouse works perfectly fine.) I disconnected the mouse lead from the
motherboard and hooked up an old two button Micros~1 mouse and Mandrake 9.0
beta 4 was perfectly happy with it. (Same behavior when I tried with
Mandrake 8.2) At one point I had it working very briefly with Mandrake 8.2
through the switchbox but do not know of anything different I may have done.

Any ideas? The only reason I bring it up is that the mouse works fine when
installing Lycoris. (But MANDRAKE is what I want to play with!)

Most of my systems are Durons and I really wanted to see the Athlon XP 1800
fly... But if I can't get it to work right I might have to turn my wonderful
new "powerhouse" into my 3yr olds Windoze box... (And take her old one)

[Cooker] Report on Installing Beta 4

2002-08-26 Thread Robert J. Rossana

I installed beta 4 on a clean partition and all is well except for two minor
issues.

I have a cable modem and so installed dhcpd. The following message appears
each time I boot.

dhcpd []: Infinite IP Address Lease Time: Exiting

The network connection seems fine despite the message.

Also I used autologin into Gnome 2 and the first-time wizard came up when
booting into Gnome but then locked up the machine completely. Did a cold
reboot and it was fine afterwards.

Also I still need to use vga16 install. The usual graphical install locks up
with my graphics card (Leadtek Geforce3 TI200).

Otherwise it looks real solid. Great job!

Yeah especially since RedHat hasn't taken this action yet. Plus the
linked website off the RedHat site is less than clear. It only says
"MacOS and Windows object libraries" need licensing. Now were they
just not mentioning Linux because they don't care about us. Or because
they just didn't put it on there. I don't know. I'd let RedHat figures
this out and see what they do...

Is there an easy way to make the grpm windows that are displayed during the

Having the focus follow the mouse causes the rpmdrake window to come to the

I don't think so. It looks just right so I applied it to /etc/devfs.conf

Just had the same problem on my home computer.. I think upgrade from 8.2

Incidentally NetBSD has them on their site:
http://www.funet.fi/pub/NetBSD/packages/distfiles/
note the Eterm-bg*.tar.gz files

The only thing I did is re-tar/bzip them because there were ones that
were duplicated in the Eterm 0.9.1 distribution and I removed them.

I can't really say what the original source of these files is though.
But I believe they used to be on the Eterm site itself...

[Cooker] 9.0beta4: LCD laptop video

2002-08-26 Thread Frank Griffin

During install, a ~3 yr old video card that I *thought* was an ATI 3D
Rage was detected as a Mach64 ATI Utah. This may or may not be a
problem (I don't know what a Utah is). I allowed the selection and the
video seems to work OK.

I had previously reported that (b2/b3) generic monitor detection for
this laptop selected 1024x768 @ 70Hz, but then followed with a color
depth and resolution prompt that initialized as 640x480. In b4,
1024x768 @70Hz is still detected, although the list now contains
entries for Flat Panel 1024x768 as well (not sure if this is a bug or
not, since both seem to work). However, the color depth and resolution
now comes up initialized to 800x600. I would have expected it to come
up initialized to the resolution selected during monitor detection
(1024x768).

Install with this video card *does* ask me if I want to test. However,
the test screen of penguin wallpaper has been replaced with a screen
full of vertical color bands. It was not at all clear to me that the
test results were correct, and in fact I went back and forth several
times trying different options. The installed system video worked fine
when booted, so if the vertical bands are indeed an indication that the
test worked, the "did it work" prompt ought to describe what you ought
to be seeing. At least with the penguins, it was pretty obvious that
you wouldn't be seeing those nice clean crisp images if the video were
screwed up.

Just a note, that this setup still has problems with the 2.4..19-5mdk
kernel (hang, keyboard dead - not even sysrq keys - with weird graphics
on the screen), but it works fine with kernel-linus and the RH kernel I
tried. I just can't get kdm to use a keyboard, and gdm doesn't start.

[Cooker] problem with msec-0.34

2002-08-26 Thread David Relson

Hi,

If I install msec-0.34-1mdk.i586.rpm, I get the following in /usr/sbin

-rwxr-xr-x1 root root 1720 Aug 25 16:09 /usr/sbin/msec*

If instead, I install the src.rpm and run make install, I get:

-rwxr-xr-x1 root root 1268 Aug 26 12:48 /usr/sbin/msec*

Checking the scripts in msec-0.34, I find the following:

-rwxr-xr-x1 root root 1268 Nov 8 2001 init-sh/msec*
-rwxr-xr-x1 root root 1720 Aug 19 17:07 share/msec*

Checking msec.spec and msec-0.34/Makefile, I see that both install
/usr/sbin/msec, but one does it from the share directory and the other does
it from the init-sh directory:

msec.spec:
install -m 755 share/msec $RPM_BUILD_ROOT/usr/sbin

msec-0.34/Makefile
cp init-sh/msec $(RPM_BUILD_ROOT)/usr/sbin

Looks like Makefile needs to be changed!

David

P.S. This problem is also present in msec-0.32 and msec-0.33

Do not test X just let let the installation complete.
When system reboots your B3 X86conf-4 will still be intact and used to

[Cooker] 9.0beta4: pcmcia-cs and orinoco still wrong

2002-08-26 Thread Frank Griffin

The problem I reported for b3 still exists:

The problem is twofold:

(1) The /etc/pcmcia/config that ships with Beta3 is not the config that
is part of pcmcia-cs-3.2.0.  It is about 6K shorter, and contains no
entries at all for the Linksys Wireless cards.

(2) The /etc/pcmcia/config that is part of 3.2.0 is wrong in regards to
the Linksys WPC11.  The entry needs to read:

card "Linksys WPC11 11Mbps 802.11b WLAN Card"
version "The Linksys Group, Inc.", "Instant Wireless Network
PC Card"
 bind "orinoco_cs"

The version line in the existing file is wrong (at least for my version
of the card).

The config entry as shipped in 3.2.0  is for an older version of the
card, and the above entry needs to be added.  Also, the orinoco_cs
driver is shipped with the MDK kernel, but does not appear in the Network
Wizard selection list during the install.  Is there any reason why
all of the built drivers shouldn't be selectable ?
Finally, the b4 network install autodetect did not detect my serial
PCMCIA card and flag "modem" as a configurable option.  b3 didn't
detect it either, although b2 did.

It seems I'm not the only one having problems with the Radeon 7500:

http://mandrakeforum.com/article.php?sid=2386&lang=en
(search on the page for Radeon).

Since this is a DRI card, it could be the kernel or X. So I (with some
effort) installed a kernel from RH. Same behaviour (machine just dies,
screen goes to power saving when trying to test or start X).

So, it probably wasn't the kernel. Then I upgraded (with even more
effort, I had to hack some files, rpm --nodeps --force with some RPMs,
- --justdb with others) to the XFree86 in Rawhide, and after it all, I got
to the point where X would actually start. A bit later, I could log in,
and I could even run Tuxracer. I can't benchmark with glxgears (RH 7.3
stock was running 1000FPS), since glxgears are in different packages in
RH and Mandrake. Now I just have to figure out why I have no keyboard
when starting X via the dm service (starting it as root from a console
works fine).

So, it would appear Mandrake XFree86 package is at fault.

Attached is the log file from when XFdrake tried to setup the card with
the Mandrake XFree86 RPMs. Logs available on request (but maybe not for
long) for the current working setup.

Note that I used the config file created by XFdrake, so it is definitely
not Drakx or XFdrake.

I have copied a section of the log that looks relevant:

(II) RADEON(0): [drm] created "radeon" driver at busid "PCI:1:0:0"
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] added 8192 byte SAREA at 0xc8921000
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] mapped SAREA 0xc8921000 to 0x40012000
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] framebuffer handle = 0xd000
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] added 1 reserved context for kernel
(EE) RADEON(0): [dri] RADEONDRIScreenInit failed because of a version
mismatch.
[dri] radeon.o kernel module version is 1.1.1 but version 1.2.x is needed.
[dri] see http://gatos.sf.net/ for an updated module
[dri] Disabling DRI.
(EE) RADEON(0): [drm] failed to remove DRM signal handler
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] removed 1 reserved context for kernel

I would really like to see this fixed before final, as there is no
Mandrake release that I have tried (8.2, 9.0b3, 9.0b4) that works out
the box on this card, so I will have to start suggesting people use
Debian or (even worse) Redhat on desktops.

Regards,
Buchan

ok, bug located and fixed. thanks!

but this occurs when the monitor is not detected and you didn't give
any information in auto_install.cfg. You get a really poor default
monitor. Is that ok for you?

Maybe you should add something alike:

  X => {
resolution_wanted => '1024x768',
monitor => { VendorName => 'Generic', ModelName => "1024x768 @ 60 Hz" },
   },

in auto_install.cfg, WYT?

only non devfs update from old dev (<3.3.1-1mdk) was bad.

we warn about that more that once .

we mistakely forgot than people will do update from old dev.
the problem is that %post of new dev package occurs before rpm remove
old files (new files with same name're already there - but in this
case, there's no new ones): the final remove of the old files
screwed up the new dev entries generated/"overwritten" by mdk_makedev

7.x had no problems with this.

When trying to install I get to the GUI Setup program and the

long. I think it has something to do with USB, because in the
ctrl---_alt_F4 screen every 3 seconds a message appears:
<4> usb_control/bulk_message: time out
Also, after installation was done, my USB-scanner (HP 4300c)
was not recognized. (USB = ohci, b.t.w.).

Further: my network-card (integrated) was recognized, but no
driver was installed and I could not find any.
Graphics and Sound were ok.

For the rest: it looks great!

Edit ~/.gnome/Gnome

change

to
default-show=galeon -w "%s"

I filed a bug at bugzilla.gnome.org saying that gnome-control-panel
should do this for you, but there are quite a few gnome1/2 integration
problems still.

I'm wondering if it is really staticy, or that you are just over powering your

ALSA x.5.x had some real bad staticy problems in OSS emulation, but that really seems

 sergei : 23/08 02:22 : Incident created ML9.0 beta3,
First of all: congratulations, guys! The first distro which
works almost without a glitch out of box on my comp!
A small nuisance:
I create a cdrom link on a desktop in KDE specifying
/mnt/cdrom as a device.
I insert a CD and verify that it is well mounted on
/mnt/cdrom from a command line. But when clicking on the
newly created icon I get error: "none already mounted on
/mnt/cdrom". /etc/fstab indeed reads:
none /mnt/cdrom supermount
dev=/dev/scd0,fs=auto,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-
15,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0
Changing "none" to "/mnt/cdrom" there corrects the problem,
but there is still some odd behavior: eject command
accessible from the right click on the icon does not unmount
cdrom: it opens the tray and immediately closes it. I already
reported that since LM8.2beta2 ;-(

The problem I reported with sndconfig and a Sound Blaster card was just

With b4, the install correctly detected my Matrox G550 and configured it

happens for cards marked as having a problem resetting their buffers.
He said that the G450 was flagged that way and that the G550 has being

way because it actually HAS the problem, or because it inherited the
flag from the G450 definition.

[Cooker] 9.0beta4: Network failure hang

During b4 install on a laptop whose netword card was unsupported
(orinoco_cs), I told it to try updating packages from the network at the
end, which should have failed immediately, since the network was not
available. The machine appeared to hang, although there was occasional
periodic HD activity at 1-min intervals, so this is either a loop or an
unacceptably long timeout/retry situation.

I was able to break out via CTRL-ALT-BSP and then CTRL-C, and the
installed system booted OK.

You shouldn't have to use 90 minute CD-R discs with the ISOs. I have found
these discs to be less reliable than 80 minute ones (they don't work with as
many drives, that is). My drive (Plextor PlexWriter 10/12/32 S) supports
overburning, though, so I can stuff almost 750 megs onto a 700 meg disc.

It looks like xmms uses a plugin(libmpg123). So xmms could be installed with only

But will people use an OS that can't play the mp3 CDs they spent years to fill ?
I think mp3 players MUST be present in commercial editions.

I just wanted to read a PDF file in KGhostView and it didn't display

Interpreter: gs
Non-antialiasing arguments: -sDEVICE=x11
Antialiasing arguments: -sDEVICE=x11 -dTextAlphaBits=4
-dGraphicsAlphaBits=2 -dMaxBitmap=1000

which I found in gv app where the settings were allready entered and now
it displays PDF files just fine.

Could you set these settings so they are entered at the very begining.
People might wonder why doesn't it work right away when they first try
to use KGhostView which is the defult app for PDFs in KDE.

plf packager need to go CVS to ressucite them.

Yep,

Noticed later that this one was not lost (did not felt like
sending yet one more message), but the others were. I just sent
one this morning about the gnome packages trying to download from
outside, and it never made it to the list.

I don't know what's going on. I seem to be the only one to have
these troubles, so I'll just assume it's my ISP.

Re: [Cooker] 9b4.. major crash

2002-08-26 Thread newslett

I can testify that this works, I had to do this as well when I upgraded
to b4 as well!! =) Now there's a new dev/makedev, damn. Too bad these
xan't be upgraded on the fly like all rpms =(

Cheers,

Jason

No, no idea, I check code (it could have been created by install automatically
to /mnt/cdrom by the media used to install).

After that, it could be a mix in /etc/fstab (?) as urpmi use /etc/fstab to
reverse mount point found in path so it could be the problem.

What have you do to get /mnt/cdrom2 and /mnt/cdrom (if you changed by hand) else
it could be a problem in install.

François.

[Cooker] 9.0beta4: Update from network - no display

2002-08-26 Thread Frank Griffin

At the end of my desktop install, I selected Update Packages from
Network. The help states that you should get a prompt showing packages
you can install, but the next thing I saw was the prompt saying the
install was finished.

This was probably because b4 was new and there wasn't anything to
download. However, I noticed in 8.2 that this option is notoriously
uncommunicative about what it is doing. Under the 8.2 install, I
thought my system was hung, since there was no indication that it had
found anything to download or any sort of progress bar. There really
should be something to indicate what is going on, whether anything is
found to download or not.
