well, it's the exact same code, the harddrake::sound module is shared
between draksound and drakx.

there's behaviour differences. eg: you don't have modinfo when
installing, so no module description, so empty round brackets (humm,
is should probably hide them when no description is availlable)

Details: It doesn't explain that the default is the oss driver, and
that the alternative driver is alsa.

strange since it works in standalone draksound ?

  The alternative driver

suggested to me just showed up as snd(),

maybe a perl-GTK2 bug or a bad interactive vs ugtk2 behavior

but when I went to the list of drivers, it was already sitting on
 the right one, snd-cmipci.

ok, i'll look for a sound card to put in my test machine to look after that

I propose to create and contruct MandrakeLinux development on this

The difference must be who is a mandrake developer and who is not, and

this is not related to nvidia. It happens whenever you run anything in
an mc shell on a console. Go to a VT and start mc, then hit enter over
any shell script in mc, or ctrl-o and do a cat on any file, ctrl-o and
you get a segfault. Rebuilding mc doesn't help. The problem started
around the time cooker introduced glibc-2.3 but the problem may not be
related to that. The newer mc-4.6 doesn't show this behaviour but, last
time I checked, no one had a decent src.rpm where I could get some
ideas for packaging. They all basically threw in the 4.6 sources and
disabled all patches. This makes mc work on a console but yields other
problem when run in an X terminal emulator.

start play^H^H^H^Hworking on the mail server

We've got the 130GB (spare some directories which change often but are
of no long-term consequence, thus we exclude them) syncing in under 12
hours most nights with --bwlimit=16, except when some id10t user decides
to rename a big directory for no reason ...

OK, we have a spare box that happens to run cooker, and I have bincimap
installed but Mozilla don't like it.

1)Do I need to maildirmake ~/Maildir as with courier, and if so how
(urpmf maildirmake gives courier-imap which conflicts with bincimap :-()

I installed courier on my box and maildirmade from there, but I guess
now with your new package it's now issue.

I think you can define mailbox in /etc/*.conf if needed.

2)Anything else I need for non-ssl but to bounce xinetd and configure
/etc/pam.d/checkpassword-pam ?

(one also needs to enable allow plain auth in non ssl in the config
file it seems if you want to test without ssl, but I'm not sure ...z)

I must admit I know very little how this should be configured (pam), I tried
to look at other packages to give me hints. If all else fails try to use
DJB's checkpassword package without pam support and change the xinetd
files, I think vdanen has binaries.

A pam guru should help out here...

Well, I have been playing some more, but still no success with bincimap.
I do get a login prompt from mozilla now, but it doesn't authenticate.
checkpassword-pam isn't very communicative on errors:

Feb 6 14:45:00 caeisd1 xinetd[9133]: START: imap pid=9140
from=146.232.174.36

The same setup works with courier-imap out-the-box against our LDAP
server with pam_ldap (courier runs on my box, binc on another cooker
box, all other pam services authenticate fine on both machines). And
both machines mount the same NFS homes, and courier serves mail from the
 ~/Maildir just fine.

Also:

[caeisd1:~]# rpm -Uvh /var/cache/urpmi/rpms/bincimap-1.0.20-1mdk.i586.rpm
Preparing...###
[100%]

/etc/ssl/bincimap/bincimap.pem already exists.
error: execution of %post scriptlet from bincimap-1.0.20-1mdk failed,

I think, unless something improves soon, we will use courier to migrate,
we can always try binc again later ...

[Cooker] When's the CUTOFF?

2003-02-06 Thread Robert Fox
It would be nice to know when Mandrake plans a feature freeze on the
9.1 development and starts working on the look and feel and
stability

Up until what date are new versions of packages allowed in Main?
Contrib?

I'm asking this because it would be nice to know when to put more
emphasis and critic on the usability versus the functionality or
consistency and or stability of Cooker.

For example, I previously asked about the need to have Xconsole as a
standard on the desktop. Maybe it should be automatic for the expert
install but not for a normal install.

I think Xconsole would be more attractive (and less confusing to
newbies) if it was colorized like a terminal window (because of the
strange color codes that appear in the output)

Anyway, there are several small details in the standard settings which
would make a world of difference to a new user to linux which could be
suggested. Know when to concentrate on these would be helpful.

Another idea would be to have a usability mailing list for Cooker which
ONLY focuses on GUI, configuration and look Feel issues . . .

Thanks for the rant . . .

thanks a lot.

I think you could do a couple of things to
 improve it though:

  * The buttons don't stay in the same places when you click halt or reboot.
They appear to move upwards slightly. IIRC, this can be fixed with the use
of spacer widgets - forcing the buttons to stay at the bottom all the time.

Yes I know I will try to fix it.

  * It would be better to use the user's full name instead of the unix
username. KDM does this - so it should be pretty easy.

It use fullname, but when this full name is empty, I display username.

  * An *easy* way to get a text box up for username entry. This could
perhaps be done with a Login as another user button on the login screen,

or an entry in the mandrake control centre to switch between mdkkdm, kdm
 and gdm.
it will be a good idea...

 Keep up the good work,
 David Sansome

So it would make sense to name the new Mandrake Display Manager mdkkdm then?

I would prefer drakname as pattern, since so you can type draktab and
pick the right one, further you have an overview about all the draktools
 fast.

how about drakdm?

A .mo file is a compiled .po file. You only need to concern yourself with .po
files.
I suppose the translated terms you are talking about are marked 'fuzzy'. That
means they have been altered a little bit and someone needs to check if they are
correct.
There are several utilities which can help you edit .po files, look for poEdit,
gTranslator or KBabel.

[Cooker] [Bug 1179] [kdebase] Mandrake's new kdm is welcomed with extreme displeasure

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-02-06 14:55 ---
I also want to express my displeasure with the new kdm. I have to add root
to the list, to login as root which I dont like at all. Yes I know, I can
CTRL-F[1-6], login as root, #startx ... but this sucks. In this form KDM is
just standing in my way.

Is there any reason for the new design?

The new Mandrake kdm that removes the login text field, forces users to login in
only
if they are listed, and makes loging in a two-stage process is a big usability and
security
problem.

A good solution would probably be:

1) A mdkkdm package (that can be installed by default) that has this new kdm in it
(although, I surely hope that it is improved before it's used anywhere!)

2) The original unmodified (but it can be branded, as usual--we have no problem with
that) kdm being installed by kdebase, and used if mdkkdm is not installed.

Others have made plenty of comments in the cooker ML and can add comments here
as appropriate.

Upgraded from beta2 to beta3. Please see bug:1236 for history

I can now find the intergrated 3Com nic in DrakConnect but still cannot
connect to the internet (it seems there's incomming data from the 3com lan
port but no outgoing data).

I still can't see my NVnet network port in drakconnect (even after selecting
it from the list of Nic's).

When I try to modprobe NVnet it cannot be found. I am running an ASUS Nforce2
mobo with intergrated 3Com nic intergrated Nvidia nic (both are contained
within the Nforce2 chipset).

When listing the harware in my machine I can see the NVNet hardware but cannot
load the NVnet kernal module. Have tried installing the Binary RPM for
Mandrake9 over the top to see if that works (which it doesn't). Have also
tried recompiling the latest source Nvidia nforce tar.gz file but I get make
errors.

The modules.conf should have a line like this in it for the internal nvidia
nic:-

alias eth0 nvnet

unfortuately I only get an alias for the 3Com nic. (which still won't connect
to the net)

[Bug 1216] [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

 https://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1216

[...]

 Hi,
I would like to suggest that you consider a default bootsplash theme with
dramatically less text messages on display and more emphasis on the
MDK logo and/or a welcome message (in the same way the boot process
of other modern OSes do not focus on text messages). The URL shows
the 800x600 version of a replacement bootsplash I designed. I am
currently using it and it shows 5 lines of text at a time at the bottom (in the
 lighter area).

If you'd like the other sizes, the original GIMP XCF file, or the theme data
for bootsplash, let me know. I'd be happy to place this under the GPL or
another FSF approved license that would meet Mandrake's needs, if you
 would like to use it.

I believe this looks much less scary to new users, and overall looks
nicer for anyone. While this still doesn't look quite as friendly as Aurora
did, I think it does combine a good combination of form and function (so to
 speak).

Also, I'd like to suggest that a bootsplash be used on the bootup for
DrakX. That would get everything off to a better start, I think.

I do not think I will change anything in bootsplash for 9.1.

- When we put most of the text in console 11, and only important
message in console 1, it was not perfect because new dm structure is
suffering some time of this configuration, moreover some important
message or input may lock the init process, and the user stay watching
the console 1 forever.

- When there are serious trouble and the user dumped to a shell, only
5 lines is quite not enough.

A good solution would be to have a key which can be pressed to switch
from full text mode to no text mode, but I do not investigate on this
way yet (and I am not likely to do it for 9.1, except if you boys have
pointers for that)

[Cooker] unique name-pattern for drak-tools ?

Hi!

I constantly wonder about the naming issue of the draktools. Wouldn't it be
better to use a unique pattern instead of :

drak*
*drake
*drak*
*drake* ?

I would prefer drakname as pattern, since so you can type draktab and pick
the right one, further you have an overview about all the draktools fast.

Is this a known issue (work in progress?)?
