[Cooker] OT: SunRay session management

Hi,

I have to sit in front of a SunRay terminal all the day. It doesn't
work that well. Sometimes your session disappears without giving you a
chance to save your stuff. Also all the apps keep running when you
remove your card. This generates so much load on the server, that only
the employees of the institute could keep their cards, the students
had to return them. Also, I don't know if the sessions really adapt to
different screen sizes, as all our monitors have the same size :-)

Hmm... some of you will probably rate this offtopic, but if you don't drop
seeds you'll never get trees...

Sun have this really cool feature for their SunRay and similar workstations
which allows you to log in to any random terminal with a card; when you pull
out your card your session is either suspended or shovelled into /dev/null;
when you plug in elsewhere it comes back up again.

To do this, the apps must be able to cope with different kinds of screens
(resolution and colour depth at least) and changing those on the fly. But as
you've exemplified here, not all apps will co-operate.

One possible solution is to use XNest, and run the offending app in a `screen
size' that it likes, but XNest (even a `rootless XNest!') isn't quite what I
have in mind.

Xv also provides a useful facility, a not-quite-bitbucket X server, but this
is also not what I'm seeking.

Think `screen' for X.

What I want is an interface layer which sits between the apps and the real X
server (or perhaps between the WM and the real server would be better), and
in normal circumstances does nothing, uses little or no resources (e.g.,
calls are vectored straight through to the real server untouched).

If you pulled the card from your screen, logged out, or whatever (maybe the
ssh tunnel fails), the interface layer would take charge and either SIGSTOP
the processes attached through it, route the outbound traffic to /dev/null
and fake the inbound traffic, route the traffic to an Xv-like or some
combination of the above.

When you plugged in again, logged in again, rebuilt your VPN or whatever, you
would be able to attach (even at a different screen rez or depth) your
existing session and do a refresh. Apps which didn't indicate an ability to
handle an environment different to the one they started in would be emulated
(e.g. scaled to fit on a smaller or larger screen, run through an XNest-like
emulator for differing screen depths.

I'm not sure that this would work at all well for OpenGL apps, but OTOH they
should in theory be able cope with scaling issues (a change in the surface
they're rendering to) much more seamlessly than an app which knows so much
more about X directly.

The ability to invoke virtual magic on a per-app basis would be very nice
(e.g. scale Tower Topler window contents 2x2 or 3x3 on this 2000x1600 screen
so I can actually see what's happening, crush down the huge linuxconf intro
panel so I can see it all on an 800x600 screen).

RandR-type resizing/redepthing would be handled in pretty much the same way as
a detach/reattach-at-different-rez.

You could `broadcast' an X app or screen with this technology to a bunch of
disparate machines for teaching or meeting-style apps, and have most of the
depth/size and similar tradeoffs handled the same way that they would be for
any other app appearing on each server's desktop.

Fitting 2D apps into a proper 3D desktop would be relatively trivial with this
technology, you'd just `reattach' the app to an OpenGL surface.

Now... is there anything around which does all/most of this already? Any of
the 3D WM's, for example, that virtualise a lot of stuff without much of a
performance hit?

Cheers; Leon

recompiling the latest RC7 myself solved the problem.

Well, my point on this is well known: In my opinion, our RD should take
full responsibility over RPM-voting system, and we should merge the
following stuff into one:

- contributions
- club-contributions
- unsupported

Then RD could impose whatever methods of automatic quality control they
have on top of peer-reviewing that's inherent to MandrakeClub, and add
automatic rebuilding for different architectures (maybe even for different
versions of the distro?). That would IMO be a full win-win situation for
everyone, but not everyone shares this view.

Until this happens, we'll have to live with overlap, and I have no choice
but to keep building the MandrakeClub volunteers team separately from the
RD.

(comment on Bugzilla bug 2432, which isn't exactly my problem, but
is clearly another problem with the ALSA in the current kernel).

I am the author of the message :) Thanks for the help !
Alsa is now released as RC7, but Mandrake kernel is still using
RC6. I had problems with audio using snd-emu10k1 so far. But
recompiling the latest RC7 myself solved the problem.
However, I did not try to recompile the RC6, so I do not know if it
is a problem of versions or of some options used to compile. I
compiled ALSA with default options : ./configure, make and make
install. No special options, it installed like a charm, and solved
all problems (choppy sound with -ao oss and -ao alsa9).

Since emu10k1 is very used, I recommend it to be corrected. Please

vote for that bug 2432, since it has only one vote (mine), it is
still unconfirmed. Another vote will make it confirmed.

strange, 2.4.21-0.pre4.4mdk should have alsa rc7

Nope, even the latest one 0.11 has still RC6.
I recompiled yesterday the latest ALSA release RC8a, and it solved my
problems with my creative SB Live card. I hope it will be put in the
final mandrake.

Well I don't know myself very much on how to use both types of
 proxies :).

Surely florin has a test setup you can use with squid?

For us, when necessary (this method does not allow exclusing lists, and
we don't want updates going through our ISPs external proxy back into
the local FTP server when they would charge us for it ...) we use

http_proxy=http://proxy.domain.com:3128
ftp_proxy=http://proxy.domain.com:3128

I forget if DrakX allows using an http proxy server for ftp proxy, and I
do not know if it is possible to proxy ftp via ftp ...

This was an issue before ... (DrakX not allowing http in the ftp proxy
field).

I've been having the same probmlem on rc1 but have not poasted a bug report
because I cannot give any hints on what is going on.

This generaly happens when I am draging/droping files from one konqueror

intervals. A couple days ago (with an earlier version of kdebase) it
wasn't so bad, but now it seems to happen after about 5 minutes of
use...This happens when using Konq as a web browser (I'm down to using
Mozilla now) and the only way out of it is to ssh in from another box and
kill X, who is hogging all CPU power.

I'd love to give more info but I'm not sure where to look. Anyone got any
pointers on how to identify what package is responsible for this?

Picking VESA during install works. Trying to change display from Radeon 8500 to
VESA after install doesn't work. Unusual detection on secondary monitor, it is on a
KVM
switch and secondary monitor doesn't detect when set to this computer, however if
KVM is switched to this computer DURING bootup, it does detect secondary monitor.
With VESA display functions OK on 1 or 2 monitors. Secondary monitor (when
detected) is a mirror of primary display. VESA is best driver yet for this setup.

As mentioned in a different bug report, Mozilla 1.3b (Mandrake 9.1 RC1) themes
can't be changed from the default classic. Also, downloading and installing a
new theme fails.

I believe this is because there are no chrome directories and related files
created under the user profile in the .mozilla directory. Here is what I've found:

Installing 9.1 RC1 as a clean install, but keeping the existing home
directories, Mozilla themes works for existing users, but not newly created ones.

Installing 9.1 RC1 as a clean install, without keeping existing home
directories, Mozilla themes do not work for anyone, including root. Root gives
the message from the cli: grep: /usr/lib/mozilla-1.3b/chrome/locale.alias: no
such file or direcotry and after that themes can be changed for root (I'm
assuming, though, that root is then using the above directory because the
profile in root's directory still does not have a chrome directory.

In either of the above scenarios, copying a chrome directory from my Mandrake
9.0 box to any users created on the 9.1 box fixes the problem. So, I'm pretty
sure that the problem is with the missing chrome directory and the profile that
is created.

Sorry,
I'm remembered wrong...

if your cd is 'hda' or 'hdb', boot with ide0=nodma
if your cd is 'hdc' or 'hdd', boot with ide1=nodma

This actually turns off dma mode on primary/secondary controller...
(just to verify that it's not causing problems...)

I'll try the RC2 myself tonight on an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe board
that has that nforce2 ide controller.

(It has been working fine while running Cooker, but maybe there are
some differencies in the BOOT kernel that geves the nforce2 problems)

Who said that? glx can use a remote display, I'm not sure about xv,
 but I guess that's similar.

Hmm I thought at least xv uses a similar approach as the dri and dri bypasses
the normal Xserver for direct access to the hardware, I thought for GL it is
the same. But I can be wrong.

But taken two steps lower is interesting enough. Didn't the gdm
provides this fast user switching ? Could this be triggered by a
card-reader and the right card. At least it seems interesting enough
to keep this in mind for 9.2 doesn't it ? Another idea for
  authentification would be an usb-memory-stick.

Sure, that would be a nice idea. Are those smard card readers
supported by Linux? I see those Fujitsu Siemens boxes with card
 readers everywhere.

The easiest approach is the usb-memory-stick ;) (f.i. a second small partition
with the key on it) But there are some card-readers that are supported under
linux. I have done some investigation for HBCI-banking:

- towitoko-card-reader
- Reiner SCT (the USB Class 3 card-reader, can't remember the name, but reiner
sct provides driver for it) == my favourite, but can't afford it currently.

There may be more supported and i can search a but in old c't-magazins (or was
it Linux Magazin ?) since there was an article about card-readers under
linux, which are supported and how to enable them and how to write a programm
to use it. In the club is also a discussion about GnuCash and OpenHBCI that
may be a bit related (homebanking).

I guess we would need an cardreader-enabled gdm or kdm for it, but i can't
present fact currently ;)

Everything seems configured fine, but it just doesn't load the drivers.
I've had this for ages, but I always just used the module names in

 classic bug sound tester:
lspcidrake -v | fgrep AUDIO will tell you which driver your card use

/sbin/lsmod will enable you to check if its module (driver) is
 loaded or not

Nope, nothing, not even snd or soundcore...

/sbin/chkconfig --list sound and /sbin/chkconfig --list alsa will
tell you if sound and alsa services're configured to be run on
 initlevel 3

Both are on, and even if I start them by hand it doesn't load anything.
The only thing that works for me is modprobe snd-slot-0 or the drivername.

aumix -q will tell you if the sound volume is muted or not

/sbin/fuser -v /dev/dsp will tell which program uses the sound card.

That's not really true. Again the host command *ONLY* queries
nameservers. It does not pay any attention to the /etc/hosts file. So
  more accurately if:
  getent hosts `hostname`
spits out an IP then GNOME will work.

I think I asked Greg to test both of those. The thing I wanted to
confirm here was whether he was using `hostname` or `localhost` as the
 name to attempt to resolve.

D'Oh, looking at my mail, that was the one I forgot :-(.

Greg, do you have a working (ie broken) setup at present you can test
 this on?

Yes, I have a machine to test, but, unfortuantely, I am a little short on time
until later this evening, if you can respond right away, I might be abler to
get it done this morning, I am UTC -5:00. What specifically do you want
tested.

I will reiterate that I have already found that with default network settings
accepted during install, host `hostname` does not resolve but GNOME does
not complain. Only after running drakconnect does GNOME start complaining,
and host `hostname` still does not resolve. I don't think I tested host

The current version of Mozilla is very unstable and hangs for no apparent
reason. After reading some mail and doing some web browsing what follows happens:

- CPU usage goes to 99%-100% (a combo of X and Mozilla);
- it is impossible to read mail messages (nothing is displayed) or write new
messages (the write window is opened but it is impossible to write in it);
- browser windows freeze, sometimes with a frozen Loading in the tab label;
- the only way out is to killall mozilla-bin;
- to restart mozilla properly you have to log out and log back in (!!!).

I'm sorry I can't be more specific, but I just can't see what's the cause of
these blocks, they appear at random (sometimes 5 minutes after I started using
M, sometimes 1 hour later).

Well, my point on this is well known: In my opinion, our RD should take

 - contributions
 - club-contributions
 - unsupported
I wholeheartly agree, i just don't see why unsupported and club-contributions
couldn't be merged into contributions, which is the oldest, largest and more
advanced package repository sofar.

Backporting for stables release, as well as taking care of user input, are
separate issues IMHO, that should not be confused.

Automatic rebuilding would definitevely be a giant lap. As it is not a
mdk-specific issue, but a generic packaging project concern, i think this
could be developped as part of youri project (http://youri.zarb.org).
Matthias Saou, the guy behind FreshRPM, would be very interested for
instance.

Until this happens, we'll have to live with overlap, and I have no choice
but to keep building the MandrakeClub volunteers team separately from the
 RD.
Note if club restrict itself on backporting stuff from cooker contrib and main
to stable release, and forward new package introduction request to either
cooker or PLF (non-free stuff).

BTW, i'd be very happy to drop official mdk package we have to backport in PLF
sometimes in favour of club.

Beta 3 Has MANY problems.

To be fair for testing, I tried placing Beta 3 on Two different machines.
Both machines hardware fully tested.

Machine 1 (Server)(New) This machine was done as a fresh install.

IBM xSeries 225 Netfinity Server
1-2.4 GB Pentium 4 Processor
1 GB Ram
IBM 40x CD-RW
HP DVD100i DVD +R CD-RW
1-12GB Eide Harddrive
6-36GB UltraSCSI
18 Viewsonic VX800-2 LCD
2-10/100/1000 NIC

First major issue. Like Beta 2 there is no driver for the builtin
Fusion MPT SCSI Adapter (mptscsi.h) If you want to do business with IBM and
IBM servers you have to include this. Even the IBM website gives you the
option of buying the servers without O/S or with Suse 8.1 or RedHat 8.0
who both have the drivers and load and run fine. Mandrake is not listed
because of this. The IBM server goes to SCSI hardrive, or floppy, or CD/DVD.
Even when I placed a 12 GB EIDE drive on the system and loaded beta2 and
beta 3 on the that disk. It will not boot except by floppy.

The is the first problem in Beta 3. During the install I was asked exactly
once if I wanted a boot disk written and then given a choice of floppy or
harddrive. I was never asked again and it does not ask when I reran as an
update. That make it completely unusable. You can't boot the systems
without major effort.

Machine 2 (Workstation) This machine done as a update to 9.0/9.1Beta 2

This machine had 9.0 running on it. It is used to try to convince the state
to approve Linux for use on state machines and to service my clusters.
I did a straight update to 9.1beta2 with little or no problems and everything
worked first time. But, On updating to Beta 3, I no longer get a choice to
logon as root. I must log into an unpriviledged account and su to root.
That stinks. All USB devices specially USB_Storage is no longer functional
even when the modules file is edited. There went my security key and scanner.
Many of my command don't work now. I can't even do an lsof -i. Or, use
Konqueror or Galeon.

Generic 800MB Athlon
512 MB Ram
Panasonic LF-D201 DVD +RW
Liteon 32x CD-RW
Matsui 20x CD
128 MB Flash Drive
18 Cornea CT1700 LCD

Summary after first look. This needs major work. Try standing in front of a
politician and asking for state approvals when he just watched you just mess up
your machine.

in XFree86 version 4.3 (unlike 4.2), when choosing a keyboard layout with more
then one keyboard group, it is not possible to switch groups. hence, after
choosing the Israeli keyboard layout I am unable to type english (which is
available as an extra group in the Israeli layout). also, if choosing any
keyboard variant other then 'generic101', XFree86 gets stuck in the last
keyboard layout chosen and its impossible to even switch keyboard layouts.

This makes XFree86 4.3 unusable to anyone who needs non latin input methods.

Greg, do you have a working (ie broken) setup at present you can test
 this on?

Okay, I just confirmed that in a stock 9.1 install accepting the network
defaults in a dhcp environment GNOME starts without error.

If I run drakconnect to attempt to set a hostname and then reboot, GNOME
pukes.

#no output is returned

Somehow, running drakconnect changes a setting somewhere, that I cannot (or
have not been able to) find, that breaks localhost resolution. You'll note
that an entry has been made to /etc/hosts for the hostname I chose when I ran
drakconnect, yet that name has not been set. Could this be causing the GNOME
problem. The ip address assigned to this machine has one name in /etc/hosts,
yet the machine hostname is different (dhcppc5). Hold on..

I edited /etc/hosts and rebooted. Nope, GNOME still pukes.

Anything specific you want tested more I'll have to do after work tonight, so
let me know.

I've found the same problem as mandrake 8.2, 9.0 with Mandrake 9.1RC2.
Basically after the kernel unload itself it then hangs for ever. The last lines
says:
Unloading kernel
Now booting the kernel..

And that's it.
The problem was gone in 9.1 Beta3 but it's back with RC2.
It sounds like a kernel problems. And no I don't want to retrograde my kernel
because the USB mouse and Keyboard don't work.

My PC is a packard bell i-media with a AMD AthlonXP 1600+.

After rebooting the server, the connection is lost and other computers are not

I have to restart the assisten with creating a new configuration - after that

who both have the drivers and load and run fine.

Summary after first look. This needs major work. Try standing in front of a
politician and asking for state approvals when he just watched you just mess up
your machine.

Eric: It actually has a mix on RC6 and RC7. The RC6 you see on startup
is taken from the version of the ALSA libs Mandrake has installed. The
actual drivers are RC7. No-one's ever explained why the kernel drivers
are always updated separately from the libs, though...

Thanks Adam for the answer. But this does not solve the problem of the
actual ALSA emu10k1. I wonder why the latest version of alsa drivers are not
included in the kernel.

Maybe, but there is a problem with emu10k1 Sound Blaster cards and mplayer.
I would be sad if any reviewer reported that problem after the final
release... Actually I don't know if that problem is because of some
compilation options rather than the alsa version. I hope it can be fixed
before final.

During the installation the mouse works fine, no problems. After the last

My workaround is: login as root an type the following /sbin/rmmod usbmouse

After this the mouse works correctly.

Club does not restrict its volunteers in this way.

If there is demand for an aplication, and one of the volunteers (folks who
are allowed to upload stuff) builds it, he/she can upload it and put the
pack in testing status imediately. When testing is done, and the
users are happy, he can move the packs to done area.
Uploading for cooker contribs too is recomended, but I have no mean to
enforce this.

There is absolutely no control on what's uploaded on my side, but
volunteers need to pas a test before getting upload permissions, and we
can also revoke the permission in case they start producing bad packs.
This is quite close to Debian way of doing things, and IMO much better
than the system where one person is supposed to check all incoming
packs...

 Why doesn't someone

2)Vote for it or confirm it.

I'm unfamiliar with bugzilla and thought I was doing so by responding to
