[Cooker] Installation of Bootloader failed.
This was on a Sony VAIO PCG-Z505SX Performing a network install (FTP) USB Floppy. This was next step after Add a user. I chose MBR. For some reason, the floppy disk spun up when it went to write the MBR to the hard drive then this message appeared :p part_nowrite: read:: Input/output error Next Clicking OK takes me back to the "Where do you want to install the bootloader?" prompt. If I keep selecting "MBR" the same cycle repeats. To get out of the cycle I choose skip. Then went to the Bootloader main options screen. >From here also, I get the same message when trying to install the MBR to /dev/hda. -Joe Baker

I like to help with testing code. I have a gift for troubleshooting and patience that I can give back to the community. The quicker we can put the latest code in front of people like me, the quicker open source projects can evolve. Hey maybe all I need is a lesson in how to create source rpms. But I tend to believe that the ebuilds in portage are the most efficient way out there. I've seen many developers whom I greatly respect flock to the Gentoo community to provide assistance in doing ebuilds and squashing bugs. Headaches, yes, but they seem to get satisfaction from it in some way because as end users with portage, we can easily test the very latest code before a packager has time to make a package for it. -Joe Baker

This problem may well have been a problem with the Sony Vaio's built in Memory Stick Reader interface. I had this device turned on and it was showing up ad a corrupted partition on hdc (when I had no hdc drive). Ideally, it would be great to get support for the memory stick on the Vaio, but I know they havn't always been so cooperative with Open Source developers. For now I will just disable the memory stick reader. I'm thinking that this issue can be closed. -Joe Baker
[Cooker] Portage for Mandrake?
Two and a half years ago I was enchanted with Mandrake Linux. The release cycles were much faster and more bold at using the latest versions of the applications that people wanted at the time. She was feature rich and still leads the pack in the installation many categories. I'm always pleasantly delighted that I can design and implement such a complicated filesystem layout including elements of the Logical Volume Manager, Raid and my choice of all the big file systems that are out there today - Right from the installer menu! My point is this... I want Mandrake to offer Portage for access to the latest application compiling. Portage is being made available for Mac's OS X, and the Cygwin project on Windows. Portage is one of the best development tools to come along under the GPL banner. Even BSD "Ports" fans are envious of Portage. Well, this probabaly isn't the best time to bring this up with all the intense debugging going on and the agressive deadlines that you're trying to make. But it is food for thought about the future. This integration would set Mandrake apart from all the other distros in an amazing way. Food for thought. Best Regards, Joe Baker President, Digital Communications Research, Inc.
[Fwd: Re: [Cooker] USB Microtec Scanner Crashes System]
The USB chipset on the motherboard is VIA and it appears that one of the chipsets on the VIA motherboard is 2.0 and that there may also be an older VIA usb 1.x style chipset as well. For what it's worth, the scanner is plugged into the back of the motherboard where the onboard plugs are. It's a Microtek v6usl scanner http://www.muc.de/~bernds/mtek2/doc/sane-microtek2-supptable-doc.html This page seems to indicate that my scanner isn't supported by the USB drivers, but is supported by the SCSI support (the scanner has both.) I have s SCSI card and cable around somewhere I'll try to get it installed that way unless you have something else you'd like me to try. It was amazing how badly my home directory got munged when I tried to get the scanner going under Mandrake 9.1 through USB. -Joe Baker > > > > Using XSane I can acquire a preview, > > but when I try to acquire a real image, > > the scanner either freezes about 3/4 way down the page > > the application asking for the scan freezes up and then > > I see my keyboard lights flash, and then the whole system > > locks up. > > > > -Joe Baker > > > > > > > >

While I appreciate how before suspending the unit switches to the text counsel screen, then powers down. This seems like the safest way to perform this task. What seems to be broken now is that the XScreenSaver 4.11 tries to check the user's password on resume and never seems to finish checking... I can go to a counsel window and login there, find the screensaver process and kill it and I'm back to my desktop. Mandrake 9.2 Beta 1 I installed from a network install (ftp) When going into rpmdrake I found that I could not activate the checkboxes of packages to install with the mouse, but if I first focused on the package I wanted then hit the space bar, I could in this way check the box. Greg, I just tried doing a network install from one of the mandrake-devel trees and all the packages sure didn't work together as they did when I started downloading directly from a mirror of the 9.2 iso. I'm working on a solution which involves some symbolic links and loopback mounts of the iso image to provide the necessary directory structure for a network install of the three ISO images. -Joe Baker On Mon, 2003-07-28 at 21:11, Greg Meyer wrote: > On Monday 28 July 2003 06:37 pm, Joe Baker wrote: > > Is there an FTP server that services the Mandrake 9.2 individual > > files verses the whole ISO images? > > > 9.2 right now is called cooker and it is on the mandrake-devel tree of any > mirror.
[Cooker] Network Install Filesystem Layout
How should the files be laid out on the FTP / NFS / HTTP server when preping them for a network install? Given that it's easy to simply use the loopback feature to the ISO images, should we consider allowing a structure of cd1 cd2 & cd3 instead of the way I understand it where you take: Contents of cd1 Then add RPMS2 from 2nd CD and put it under /Mandrake from the first CD and the RPMS3 from the 3rd CD and add it also under /Mandrake from the first CD. I just performed a network install from a sight who graciously provided loopback images of the 9.2b1 install cds and it went about 1/3 of the way through the install and reported... "There was an error installing packages indexhtml-9.1-8mdk.noarch Go on anyway? y/n On the other hand, as someone suggested, I tried downloading straight from a mandrake-devel directory from a mirror which failed miserably indicating at first that it was Mandrake Cooker 9.2, but then many packages including termcap could not be loaded. Adding this ability for the network install to locate the RPMS2 and RPMS3 files in seperate file trees could significantly reduce the job of the mirror maintainers, and provide a way to reduce the disk space requirements for mirroring both ISOs and the file layout. (Maybe the disk space requirements could be handled with some fancy symbolic links) -Joe Baker

Re: [Cooker] LTSP 4.0 Alpha2 -LTSP Build Environment - Bash won'tcompile
Stew, Here's why LTSP is creating their own build environment: http://www.ltsp.org/lbe-alpha-2.html#why I like the LTSP project and I'm just reporting that I was unable to compile the version of bash that they had settled on under the gcc 3.2.2 that Mandrake has included. I wish I was better at explaining all of this. What James A. McQuillan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> suggested to me was that I download and compile gcc 3.2 that they used. I got further along in the compilation process, but I ran into other problems I didn't know how to deal with. LTSP deserves at least a little attention here. Their work is paving the way to quickly and easily extend Linux's reach throughout an enterprise quicker than lightning. Maybe we simply recommend to LTSP that they run a newer version of bash that will compile properly under gcc 3.2.2. They are still in their alpha stage and I'm sure they would welcome the input. It's odd though they are compiling the same version of bash that Mandrake 9.1rc1 already has. (2.0.5b). Hmmm. Well good luck with 9.1's rollout! I'm eager to start distributing copies of the GPL version at a local computer store. -Joe Baker 414-788-8284 On Sun, 2003-03-02 at 06:53, Stew Benedict wrote: > On 1 Mar 2003, Joe Baker wrote: > > > LTSP has created a Build environment for creating applications which run > > natively on the thin clients. > > > > I've tried to compile their build environment on Mandrake 9.1rc1 and it > > fails to compile Bash. > > > > I had to install bison first. > > > > Then the LTSP folks suggested that I try compiling their version of gcc > > 3.2 instead of using 3.2.2 that Mandrake provides. > > > > I guess I'm lost as to what the incompatibilities are there. [Cooker] LTSP 4.0 Alpha2 -LTSP Build Environment - Bash won't compile
LTSP has created a Build environment for creating applications which run natively on the thin clients. I've tried to compile their build environment on Mandrake 9.1rc1 and it fails to compile Bash. I had to install bison first. Then the LTSP folks suggested that I try compiling their version of gcc 3.2 instead of using 3.2.2 that Mandrake provides. Anyway, I really Like LTSP. I think that it's going to make _Huge_ inroads into government agencies. In my opinion, Mandrake is the best free desktop OS out there and I want to ensure that LTSP and Mandrake get along well together. Since LTSP is still considering their code alpha, there's time to iron these incompatibilities out before both of you release your final versions. Thanks for your consideration. It is possible to remove the drive from enclosure and use it as if it were an IDE drive. If I had a spare IDE drive I would simply ghost the data off to another drive. [Cooker] LVM & Diskdrake & Some RPMS not installing right & no HDLISTS Found
Trying out Mandrake 8.2 beta 3 I had some irregularities happen while doing custom partitioning. I was delighted to see LVM support in the Expert section of DiskDrake. I was sad to not be able to mount / into a partition inside a logical volume. I created a logical volume and then tried creating 2 RAID 5 partions inside the Logical Volume and a third RAID 5 partition outside the LV all partitions and logical volumes being on the same hard drive. This seemed to confuse things royally. I had a great deal of difficulty deleting the partitions created within the logical volume. I ran into division by zero errors when doing so. A key to successfull Logical Volume work seems to be rebooting after committing major changes to the partition table (such as after creating new logical volumes.) I was eventually able to delete the partitions and the logical volume itself after a reboot. FIREWIRE... Is there a way to support firewire devices durring the installation. For low budget large storage arrays I know of no better solution than to create an array of Firewire storage devices using the Logical Volume Manager. Here's a link that talks about supporting firewire storage on Mandrake. http://www.mandrakeforum.com/article.php?sid=1501&lang=en I envision having multiple firewire cards with up to 63 hard drives interfaced per card. Also striping data across interfaces to increase IO performance. Also some RPMs that I flaged for inclusion in the install didn't work for some reason. I received messages saying they could not be installed continue Y/N. The packages I can remember were: zip snort snort-scarf WindowMaker Python-docs Quanta Sawfish-themes Screem vnc-doc xmms-skins xpdf xtraceroute Now after the RPMS were installed it reported that some of the packages were not installed. Clicked OK. A Message came up saying "No HDLISTS FOUND". After this point it sent me back to the Partitioning section. Logical Volume Management is _REALLY_ important to businesses. Just as important as Journaling filesystems are. Logical volume Managers allow you to "snapshot" your filesystem in time so you can backup your filesystems exactly as they were when you took the snapshot. And while the backup is going you can continue to modify databases for example without worrying about the backup becomming inconsistant. All that's required is to stop transactions on the databases for a moment whiles you take the snapshot. The other really cool feature about LVM is that it allows you to modify virtual partitions which span multiple physical disks on the fly. I hope that my observations are helpful here. Upgrading was doable but difficult for me. But the Updates page on the Mandrake Web sight had the necessary instructions for the 10 or so extra steps necessary to bring reiser up to speed with the update. What was the reason that all those extra steps were necessary to support the ReiserFS? -- Joe Baker Digital Communications Research, Inc. 414-427-6140
