[Cooker] Cooker hd img.?
Please bear with me ! I am soon to loose my Cable-modem connection due to relocation to interior Alaska and need some advice or ? There had been some discussion of hd img installation and problems. Is that still true? Basically in two-three weeks I will be back to model T status and would like to have a Cooker image on one of my archive partitions. I have become lost in the rsync, wget, iso, etc image methods often discussed and read about. My mind needs a clear method of moving .img from rpmfind.net or other site to my machine and the ability to show others its install methods. I usually screw this up! Re: get a(.img) from b(site) to c(my machine) and then d(install cooker) As Well as having the .img available for future inevitable reinstalls. I do not have a burner for ISO's. The elementary nature of this question is probably aggravating to this list but in the past I HAVE actually helped out though the majority of the time its "clueless" questions :) Please address me privately if desired. Re: [Cooker] root passwd denied
Out of curiosity I attempted to "upgrade" and selected 'poor' for security. Still no luck and with the custom boot disk and 'linux single' I get boot: linux single loading linux Error 0x10 Obviously my last rpm -Uvh of msec and custom init.sh which only set security to 'normal' should not have caused this. Console logins as root and 'su' from a users account are all affected which was not the case several months ago. I will use a rescue disk and attempt to alter the config files if necessary but was hoping for another solution !? Thanks to those who have responded. I may have seen a thread recently but it now elludes me I experienced this problem several months ago with an 'oxygen' variation and now with 7.0/Cooker It has just occurred and even 'three-fingers' gets: "no authorized users logged in" I do not know which new rpm, in Cooker or contribs might have caused this (if any). Well up to a point. :) Otherwise how the heck do I learn anything !? I do on occasion compile sources and sometimes get it right, but what I am atempting to do on this List is stay with rpms so that when they become relatively flawless and when I recommend Linux_Mandrake to friends or potential clients, they will have an easier time of it as I have had an "easier" time of it. [Cooker] XFree86 4.0 Saga-Continues
Since my original post which did generate some feedback, I am now to the point of: Has anyone successfully installed the mdkrpms from the Contrib sites? (With no probs?) My X system is totally screwed up and trying the 'XF86Config' from the command line did not "do it" for me. I am about ready to rpm -e all the ones in question and re-introduce the 3.3x ones if no one else has any ideas. BTW the command line, 'xfs -port -1 &' 'xfs -port -7100 &' etc. did not work for me either At one point Frederic Lepied wrote "I'm going to upload an updated set of packages which corrects this problem." ? I assume this means to be patient if I can't properly compile things myself (which is true) and some of these issue will be taken care of by the MandrakeSoft Coding Gurus !:) William Bouterse Alaska

Thanks for the Help ! So now I have; non-installable fsv-0.9-1.i386.rpm on LM 7.x/cooker with Mesa-3.1-7mdk, due to missing libMesaGL.so.3 and libMesaGLU.so.3 fsv-0.9-1mdk.rpm installs but performs poorly with the 233mmx and 4mg video On older P 120 machine with LM6.1 and Mesa-3.0.99-4mdk and fsv-0.9-1.i386.rpm and 8 mgs video, it works okay just slow and awkward but as expected on the older slower machine. Can anyone tell me if this fsv is in fact functional and useful on a faster machine with better 3dfx rendering? Its potential is interesting and if it can actually do what it promises it might be a fine addition as a file manager or at least a great presentation tool to potential new users!? [Cooker] fsv-0.9-1mdk.rpm
The fsv-0.9-1.i386.rpm works (albiet slowly) on my oldest, slowest machine with LM-6.1 and extras The fsv-0.9-1mdk rpm from contribs on my faster machine with LM7.0x/Cooker does not perform as well. It gave no error messages while installing. My initial attempt to install the non-mdk rpm on the newer machine gave some errors re : libMesaGL.so.3 and libMesaGU.so.3 missing So the older machine has those,The newer machine does not. The older machine has a better video card with 8mgs The newer machine has 4mgs.(Silly isn't it!) Question 1# Refresh my memory (again) how to locate the package(s) containing the missing libs. An 'rpmfind' turned up a SUSE rpm and I wasnt sure whether to go ahead? When packages are installed on the newer machine I will first test then uninstall the mdk rpm, and install the i386rpm to see if the 3d style rendering works and if not will know the video card "can't cut it" This file viewer is very "eye-catching" and "snazzy" and if it really works could be another enticement to lure away potential converts from the "DarkSide". [Cooker] Another Cooker ISO issue
Here in Juneau we have cable modem access so downloading massive files quickly is not so much a problem. However; We may be relocating to the interior in a more remote area which has only a 2.2kps connection if you are lucky. Others who are much more knowledgable than I are in this same situation so I was wondering... Is there, or would there be, anyway to get an ISO Cooker image burned to CD perhaps like once a month or two upon request, or... ? I know one can get cheap LM 7.0 etc from various companies but not ones closer to the "Edge". I personally would even be willing to consider some sort or subscription service whereby for a monthly or annual fee, I would be sent the latest updates, contribs. etc. Is this possible, or maybe even actually taking place as I speak but not generally known? Having to go "Cold Turkey" from my ability to actively and rapidly interract with Mandrake releases is something I can deal with if necessary, but am hoping there are methods available to "compensate for the loss" Basically I guess the issue is, "how can I downgrade yet continue to upgrade?" Excuse the ramblings. William Bouterse (presently of) Juneau Alaska

Is there something I can do to try and crash it !? Are there obvious bugs I haven't been bitten by yet? It seems to work as well or actually better than the 1.0.4 release. Am I missing something (as usual) or is the fact that it is 1.1x and not 1.even.x precludes it from inclusion in lets say 'Cooker' which appears to be at least as stable as its predecessor 7.x ?? Heck even kde2 seems to be working pretty dang well for me and I am not usually a KDE fan. Just wondering William Bouterse Juneau Alaska

[Cooker] DrakConf
Using DrakConf-0.34-12mdk for the first time in a couple of weeks I noticed that the 'mousedrake'? button is missing. I do have /usr/bin/mousedrake And 'mouseconfig' works as well. Is it hiding out somewhere on my machine? Somewhere in the Alaskan bush perhaps?:) I was going to do an rpm -e and then reinstall but thought I would ask first. William Bouterse

I must be forgetting something? grabbed the rpms from rpmfind.net -cooker Attempting to rpm -Uvh icewm* gives me missing '/usr/sbin/install-menu' ? I have no such item in /usr/sbin I have had clean upgrades through several levels of L-M 7.0x/cooker with this paticular WM and have not had this happen ? William Bouterse

[Cooker] XSane for Mandrake?
Just curious why XSane is not included with Cooker/Mandrake. Its a very well designed front end for SANE and the designer/programmer is quite helpful. [Cooker] kernel rpm updates for idiots
A question brought on by recently installing L-M on a new users system, a recent convert from the "Empire". How to make a basic, no recompile "clickable" kernel from the "update" icon on desktop; whereas no compiling, pointing to /boot, sustem-map,new,old, lilo-hand editing etc. would be necessary? Are there provisions being made for this or is it entirely impossible? It took me a year or two to get this somewhat straightened out myself but to a totally new user, to tell them,,, "yes, you can click on the update rpms icon but don't say install to the kernel rpms beacause its too complicated for you right now", begins to confuse the "upgradability" issue somewhat.! Am I out in "Left field" here.!? I am not advocating "dumbing down" Linux-Mandrake but merely making the basic configuration issues a little "simpler" for new users. Thanks, William Bouterse Juneau Alaska
Re: [Cooker] ftp as root
Use ssh2 if you are able. sftp works in sync with ssh2 and you must be root or su to run it. Works well for me. A little slow over modem connection due to 102x bit encryption but what the heck. Cable modem or lan isnt bad. >Would really be nice to see some how to's on how i can do a remote >xserver of >my user desktop on this computer. although security hazard, don't see >much >info around on this one I am able to use ssh2 for remote Xserver Display which slows things down a bit but gives decent security. [Cooker] XFree86-3.3.6-7 and kde2
I presently have my hybridized L-M 7.0+Cooker+kde1+kde2 functioning in a somewhat reasonable manner. Have recently down an upgrade of the latest rpms except for kernel, kde1 and XFree86. This has been a "slash and burn" some force/nodeps, but all in all produces decent results. For example I am running L-M 6.1 on Server with Client 7.0-Cooker hybrid exporting Display kde1 and kde2 to separate XConsoles on Server at the same time as well as several resident WindowManagers on Server. Impresses the "locals" and gets them interested! :>) When attempting rpm -Uvh XFree86* I get the conflicts with files from package kdebase2-1.8.0.19991204 messages mainly /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/ conflicts. Any suggestions? I will be attempting to upgrade the kde1 rpms as well as kde2 and wonder what the proper proceedure would be to keep both intact? Thanks William Bouterse Juneau Alaska
[Cooker] Cooker/Oxygen/Air
I don't usually do "straight comments" on techo-issues being the "Clue-less-One" but seeing that even staff of MandrakeSoft have a varience of opinions is a good sign in my opinion. Many of you have helped me out at one time or another, as I progressed from 6.0-6.1-7.0bOxygen-7.0Air- 7.0Air+Cooker. At times I wonder where its all heading? The least trouble to install, get printers,NIC cards, scsi-scanner,networking,sound, audio permissions to all local trusted users, seemed to be 6.0, 6.1 seemed to have some nice features though the printer-prob first time in 3 years caused me to scream. Getting a Test Machine networked to test 6.1+7.0b was lots of fun and the networking, printing both remote and local, Sound. general atitude of it all seemed very promising. I was very surprised when not only the Name, i.e. Oxygen, was changed to Air (Air without Oxygen will kill humans and of course too much Oxygen makes humans giddy); but found no mention of a "freeze" for the "stable" 7.0 and just stumbled across it from one day to the next when I could not find the Cooker RPMS. And of course a reboot has brought never-before -seen probs, but be that as it may; The Staff (you know who you are) are amongst the most helpful I have ever found, Just wish a Mandrake Convention would come to Alaska and setup shop and save us taxpayers a few $ by weaning the State off the Big M$. Anyhow I realize it was probably a marketing decision to get 7.0 out the door, but we seemed to be so close to geting the 7.0b "firmed up"?! In addition I too have wondered with RH and L-M why "everything" meant "mostly"?! I am in the process of "converting" several individuals over to dual-boot systems some of whom would have some influence in certain technological decisions being made in the coming decade with state and local agencies. I am not the only one as I read comments from many in the "arena" including other fellow penguins in Alaska. Please keep some of the goals for Linux-Mandrake not only, nice to look at and cutting edge, but reliable and flexible and May The Staff Keep Their Sense of Humor and Helpfulness Intact. Thanks You for You Patience :>) William Bouterse Juneau Alaska
Re: [Cooker] kdebase2-1.80 and 1.1.2
Working with Cooker and Contribs; A reboot has given me a working version of kde2 and koffice and konquerer. Everything is not totally spiffo of course but I can access the basic functions though some icons are missing due to who knows what. All in all I am impresed, especially not being a kde proponent in the past! An interesting situation has occurred however. Logging in as a user on the machine in question I bring up kde2. Logging in from remote terminal I bring up kde1 with previous configured desktop etc, Is there a way to explain this to me and can this happen on a regular basis. I can see its usefullness when individuals make the transition. I am using the approach of upgrade from L-M 6.0 to upgrade to 6.1 to upgrade to 7.0b to 7.0 and now on to the next cooker batch of rpms. I make many mistakes but learn more each time and can explain things better to those that are interested in moving from M$ based systems to Linux. So to clarify one of my questions; are any provisions being made to enable one to run kde1 and kde2 concurrently? William Bouterse Juneau Alaska
[Cooker] kdebase2-1.80 and 1.1.2
Okay one from cooker and one from contribs. Are they both mutually exclusive? I did the --force routine and the old kde seems to be working. With the kde2-libs and koffice -1.80 I had to change the /opt/kde2 directory as I kept getting that strange "can't unpack" error. Upon attempting to run anything of the koffice, I get the 'dcopserver/dcopclient' error. Even 'konquerer' brout up a window and almost ran but got the 'dcop' and asorted mime-type errors. I did install anything related to kde-1.80 in the cooker/contrib directory This is flailing about in "the dark" so to speak but was just curious to see if the 7.0&Cooker hybrid would accept the contrib mdk.rpm's? Did the kmp3-1.0pre3-2 conflict with kmpg-0.5.0a-5 upon rpm'ing ever get straightened out? I still get it? Thanks. William Bouterse Juneau Alaska
Re: [Cooker] Two persistent kfm bugs
A rather dumb question, (again) but... why insist on using kde? Is it user desire to use the most M$-like window manager or? With all the VERY FINE Linux WindowMangers installed on Linux_Mandrake, I was just curious? William Bouterse
[Cooker] msec/security was Shutdown
David! You said, >It's because of msec I believe.. may have been the SysVinit >package too. >find is searching for modified files which could indicate >files with >a trojan in them... personally i hate it, which is why i do >custom... I was interested in your comment about 'find' and 'custom'. I assume you mean the /etc/security/msec/init-sh/custom.sh? I ran this but I also tried the DrakConf button security-level thingy and had assumed the 'custom.sh' would cancel it out? So to partially answer my own question, then 'find' is a result of one of the security choices either in 'custom.sh' or the the other 'msec' GUI chooser button program. Or in fact do you mean by 'custom' a custom firewall/ipchains/tripwire kind of setup? I have been running a Tripwire rpm successfully with 6.1 which installed flawlessly and worked right from thestart but have not tried it with 7.0 until more "kinks" get worked out on my 7.0 system. So to any MandrakeSoft folks who might read this; Does msec make something like Tripwire redundant? Thanks to All William Bouterse Juneau Alaska
Re: [Cooker] Shutdown...
telinit 6 will take it down, at least it did for me! I had the same prob a couple weeks ago with one of the 7.0b versions but a newer version rpm cured it for me. Just wish I could remember which rpm it was!? By the way at least several people had the same problem, in earlier releases of 7.0b Try the archive list for Cooker tracked down through the linux-mandrake homepage. William Bouterse
[Cooker] Top has multiple finds?
The last week or two with 6.1 evolving into 7.0b and now 7.0 I can see as many as 6-8 'finds' running during a 'top' session periodically. Theres a big hit on cpu then all quiets down and is "normal" again. I don't ever remember this happening with 6.0 or 6.1? Is it due to my 'msec' configuration or ...? Curious as its a new phenomena to me. What exactly is "find" up to? Thanks William Bouterse

Okay I'll quit struggling and ask: Cannot install the latest netscape 4.70-6mdkrpm on L-M7.0b-5? To my knowledge All lib-rpms are installed from 7.0b. I read about this problem somewhere else ? It's the ol-compat-glib 5.3-2.0.7.4 needed and not found. Have not had this kind of problem with netscape installs since the REALLY buggy 4.5x versions. I have been upgrading my test L-M6.1 machine The latest rpms have given me more trouble than any others for some reason? It is still working but continue to get many of the older errors I was getting from a couple of weeks ago. I continue to have VERY ERRATIC behavior with Cooker-Mail and Cooker Announcements. Some Days I get mail, others it stops completely or stalls to a dribble, half of my questions or error reports disappear into the VOID. I have had to resubscribe several times in the last several weeks? What is Happening? Am I going Nuts or is something really Wrong with the paticular mail-list system being used? I too feel Gimp is one of the flagship programs for Linux and find in frustrating over the last several years to bring up a scrip-fu, start it rolling and then get hit with the "missing font error".
