Re: [Cooker] 32 bit i/o for hard drive

2000-06-17 Thread Necrotica

I was having the exact same problem. Whenever I tried to turn on DMA using
hdparm the drive would just hang on me.

I don't know what kind of controller you have, but in order to get my AMD
Viper to work with DMA I had to turn on USE_DMA_BY_DEFAULT and recompile the
kernel. Works great now...

Consider as the WD is under Waranty to get it exchanged for something
else as it clearly doesnt run as it should. As long as its one off
cases hitting them they may do it but obviously the signs are clear
that if their drives are out of spec and misbehaving they will sooner
 or later go bust...

I know it looks stupid, but this is the only way I could get the drives to
work. It did not work on the CD-ROM cable, and it could not detect the WDC
as master. The WDC is UDMA so I would expect that to have been faster even
with (U)DMA disabled. WDC said that if the drive speeds differ greatly
that it may be impossible for the BIOS to detect the drive as master, so I
would need to use another setup, but as I said I can't get any other setup
to work! I think with DMA off it should work fine because they will be on
a level playing field if you will. If you can help farther, that would be
appreciated :)

if you reverse the order of these drives, you could destroy them. PLEASE see

http://kt.linuxcare.com/kernel-traffic/kt2214_54.epl (second item)

before something happens.

Put one with your CD or something, but get them off the same channel.

and hda is faster because it is a Maxtor and can use real DMA, and it has a
better timing setup and it is the MASTER--never expect the slave to be faster.

Fortunate you are that that is all that is happening. Kernel Panic "lost

Re: [Cooker] 32 bit i/o for hard drive

2000-06-08 Thread David Walluck

Can someone help me here?

VT 82C597 Apollo VP3

hda: Maxtor 84000A6, ATA DISK drive
hdb: WDC WD181AA, ATA DISK drive

hda: 7825932 sectors (4007 MB) w/256KiB Cache, CHS=970/128/63, DMA
hdb: 35419104 sectors (18135 MB) w/2048KiB Cache, CHS=2204/255/63,
UDMA(33)

So why is hda faster?

DMA off:

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 10.19 seconds = 6.28 MB/sec
/dev/hdb:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 12.60 seconds = 5.08 MB/sec

DMA on:

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 7.68 seconds = 8.33 MB/sec
/dev/hdb:
Timing buffered disk reads: hdb: timeout waiting for DMA
ide_dmaproc: chipset supported ide_dma_timeout func only: 12
hdb: irq timeout: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }

OK, so what is wrong here?

Well it is known or should be known to those selling Hardware but

One of our suppliers insisted on cutting costs and started to supply

I thought you needed to set -c3 when using dma...maybe I should set mine to
d1 and then try again. I've tried several dif combos but it always locks
when dma is turned on. And my WD was bought in Jan.

That's a pretty good improvement for a drive that isn't susposed to work at

Well, it looks like you got lucky. I have a 13 gig and an 8 gig WD and they
are both slow. The funny thing is that the 8 gig is a 5400 rpm drive and
hdparm says it is a shade faster than the 13 gig drive, which is a 7200 rpm
drive...go figure. ...around 4.7 megs/sec each.

I wish I knew this before I bought the drives. I got them at Best Buy and
they sale both WD and Maxtor drives ...it was a flip of the coin then

Model=WDC AC310200R

This one works with standard Mandrake hdparm options.

Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 5.10 seconds = 12.55 MB/sec

It's okay.

maxtor is actually the fastest on the last report I saw. And they don't
have the same problems as wd. They still aren't good they just aren't
the best. But they are fast. IBM's as far as I know are the best.

Maxtor are the fastest 7200rpm IDE drives on the market.
They will beat most 7200 SCSI and are only 10% slower than 1 SCSI .

DMA seems to work under 98 but its not anywhere as fast as it should be.
At least not on my system.
As I said I have my linux on 8 gb drives to keep things simple...
And thats a Quantum and no problem with that.
But my 98 is fairly straightforward and optimized and since the last
few weeks even stable (sorry for saying this but normally its anything
BUT stable(g))

I run a small oem and to be honest, I donot sell Western Digital OR
Fujitsu... We use Quantums (first choice) or Seagate (second).
In the hot humid climate we have, Fujitsus have to be very lucky to
survive the first year and WD normally nothing but a headache.
Mine were kind of inherited via a gift and as I donot want to make
my customers unhappy I use them myself... or better the Kiddies will
(g)

I am getting about 4.7 megs /second on my 7200 rpm WD. I am using ata/66 an
hdparm without the d1 option. I am not sure if this rate is good or not,
but when I see people say that they are getting 12+ megs per sec I start to

4.7 is no good, right?

How can I know if DMA is turned on or off? When I bot up it looks to say
that DMA is being used ...around where it says that I am using ata/66.

Your BEST chance at a resolution is to use the 486 distro or any alternative
386 distros, as you can see from the article. Your best chances in the
future involve NOT buying WD drives nor any computers that use them.

With REAL code, the WD is found wanting--it has been out of spec for a long
time, bad on the timing and blowing off the CRC. Now, as they say, with
Pentium-compiled drivers becoming more common, the jig is up.

You have a hardware problem and it is named Western Digital.

As far as how much slower the drive is with dma turned off...well, I have an
older 3 gig fugistu that is non ata66. With the dma turned on, I get about
12meg/sec transfer. With my wd 13gig I get about 1.3 or so. So it is
seriously hurting the drives performance.

Re: [Cooker] 32 bit i/o for hard drive

2000-06-06 Thread David Walluck

Sorry, I can't say anything for Windows 98 because I've never used it more
than a couple times as I don't have it installed. However, my friend has a
17G WDC and runs Win98 and his drive seemed to be working fine and he had
4 drives in there I think. However, on this list I remember at least 4
people report DMA not working on larget WDC drives. Maybe a call to their
tech support is in order, but they may just say they don't support Linux
and not help you. But frankly with these problems I am wanting to get my
drive replaced. Do yu know how much slower things are with DMA turned off?

Anyway, to recap, I know nothing about Win98 problems, nut my friend's
Win98 and WDC drive works fine. As for Linux, when I have DMA turned on I
get constant errors and data corruption. When I have hdparm run it just
hangs the drive. Are any of these three symptoms similar to yours? I can
live without the hdparm thing, as that's not guarnteed to work anyway, but
having to leave DMA off really bothers me.

let me ask something here which could be related.
I run the 15 gb WDC's and so does a friend.
Not for mandrake but for windows 98...
linux sits on another box with 2*8 gb drives.
However BOTH my friend and I have experienced odd behaviour of these
drives under 98 where a fat 32 split into 3 doesnt show the last
partitions in fdisk, it does with other tools and under 98 all is
there.
But I have the silly situation that of booting with a standard 98
floppy, I have 2 partitions visible
I never had that on my 13.5 WDC or the Quantums...

I strongly suspect that there is something in these drives which
doesnt work 'standard'

I have the same problem enabling the dma on my wd hard-drive. I check the kernel and
it seems that dma and bus mastering for the hpt controllers are not finished yet. So,
the support is not built into the kernel that ships with 7.1.

2000-06-05 Thread Jonathan M. Prigot

Nothing in particular. Just look at the manpage for hdparm and try
things. You have nothing to lose but your data ;-> You should also look
at the settings in /etc/rc.d/init.d/mandrake_everytime for some ideas.
Try things manually at first, test with hdparm -tT, and when you have
your ideal settings, put them into mandrake_everytime and edit
/etc/sysconfig/system with HDPARM=yes to load your settings at system
startup.

Hi. Why are hard drive optimizations on per default??? I have to add
"nohdparm" to the command-line. On my WDC 18G drive, it hangs. I'm
having serious problems with DMA enabled on this drive anyway (VP3
chipset). So I turned off "Use DMA by default" in the kernel. Still,
hard drive optimizations apparently can't be enabled on WDC dricves.
I've seen this problem reported many times and I'm experiencing serious
problems myself.

2000-06-05 Thread Brian Fleischman

I do can do a -c1 just fine also. If I do a -d1 (dma)...locks up...harddrive
light on constantly, even with the -X66 or -X68. I have a WD 20.5 ata/66 7200 rpm
drive. I wonder what's up with the dma stuff.

What happens if you don't do the -d1? I can do -c1 just fine (and it speeds
things up 50%), but if I do -d1 my system locks solid.

[Cooker] 32 bit i/o for hard drive

2000-06-05 Thread bobby dowling

I am trying to change the 16 bit i/o seetings for my hard drive to 32 bit to
drive to speed up access with the following command:

hdparm -c 1 -d 1 /dev/hde (I have ata/66 drives working on hde/hdg)

I wait a good 5 minutes and nothing ...just hangs, but I can close the
x-terminal.

Any ideas here/

BTW, I got this tweak tip from:
