[Cooker] 7.2 problems with 3c905b card
I've installed Mandrake 7.2 on a PII 400. I'vea 3com card (3c905B-TX). If i type a ifconfigcommand only obtained information for lo, but notfor eth0. Theorically i am using the 3c90x module(installations process determines i must use the3c59x driver, but the result is the same). Typing dmesg | grep eth i don't obtainedinformation at all. I don't know what is wrong.HardDrake detect my card. I've tryed to addmodule to the kernel and pass form lilo the nextether command : ethet=0,0,eth0; but it doesntwork. If i see modules loaded on startup i can't see 3c90x (or 3c59x). If i load it manually (insmod 3c90x), it seems to load right but i can see a "unused" message when i do a lsmod. It seems like the card doesn't exist, but it is detected by harddrake. I think it's a configuration problem, but i cant see it. I don't know how to solve it. Any sugestion? Thanks

I have read that if you put, say, an ATA66 and an ATA100 drive on the same cable, then the interface will treat them both as ATA66. Have you tried the ATA100 drive as master with no slave? In Konqueror choose Settings - Configure - File manager and type url you want. You can also do something else if you execute Konqeror from desktop or kicker icon, and if you don not want that Konqueror starts "empty". Right click on Konqeror icon and choose Properties. Choose Execute tab and type for example: "kfmclient openProfile webbrowsing http://dot.kde.org". So, when Konqueror starts it will go directly to dot.kde.org site. [Context: 7.2rc1 ISO] It did for me after I configured it on. You do have a Java runtime of some kind installed, don't you? However, Konqueror sometimes doesn't send forms! This only happens for some of my 7.2rc1 installs, and only some of the time. You click on the button, the little cog starts spinning... and eventually Konqueror reports that the site is not responding. Same machine, same site under Netscape works fine (but it's noticeably slower getting around). What I would really like to see for Konqueror is the ability to define a URL for the ``home'' button. I could use it in a web cafe once the form-sending issue is settled, but having Home go only to file:///home/username/ isn't much use in that situation. -- "Diaper spelled backwards is Repaid. [Cooker] 7.2 problems
I did a fresh expert install using hd.img. I've also just installed a Promise Ultra UDMA100 card and a 40GB Maxtor UDMA100 disk as /dev/hde. Problems... 1. Halt or reboot shuts down all the processes correctly, then gives the message: "INIT - no more processes in this run level" and just sits there like that for ever. Consequently, I suffer a fscking fsck every time. I'm now using "/sbin/shutdown -f -r now" for reboot until you can advise me something better. 2. My nice new UDMA100 disk is recognized as a UDMA33, which is a tad disappointing. I also have a UDMA66 version of that disk (same size) on the same PDC20267 which is correctly recognized and runs faster: [23:06 root@penguin:/home/peter]# hdparm -Tt /dev/hde /dev/hde: Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 1.26 seconds =101.59 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 3.40 seconds = 18.82 MB/sec [23:06 root@penguin:/home/peter]# hdparm -Tt /dev/hdf /dev/hdf: Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 1.23 seconds =104.07 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 2.32 seconds = 27.59 MB/sec I'll leave the optimizing up to the Promise controller, because the last time I experimented with hdparm the performance difference was negligible and my /var directory reported it was full (although `ls` couldn't explain why `du` came to that conclusion). All was OK after reboot - no corruption, just crazy file size reporting. 3. Konqueror just dumped me off the machine while it did an unprovoked hard reset. KDE2 may look pretty but it's buggier than Win98 - not worthy of release status. Comments: I'm glad that great ASCII penguin has gone, but I have neither "issue" nor "issue.net" in /etc, so I get a very bare prompt "penguin login:" - you surely didn't intend this. -- -- Peter Ruskin <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Wrexham, UK KDE - the professionals' choice --
[Cooker] 7.2 problems (not install)
I installed 7.2 using hd.img. During the beta, I was doing MandrakeUpdate and had problems doing updates so I was pleasantly surprised that some of my problems have gone away after doing a FULL install. As with any beta testing, updating beta software sometimes does not make sense. Anyway, after installing, and some very initial testing, I have encountered a few problems. Sound install via harddrake still not working, however, running sndconfig set my SB 16 card correctly and I have sound. Maybe in the next version, during the setup process, sndconfig or a drake version could be called to set it up. You already have it for networks, modems and monitors. Sound would be great. As a newbie, going through an install and THEN doing addition stuff via harddrake or other things should be eliminated. Harddrake should be used to tweak and modify or install NEW hardware, not used to finish an install. I could not get any sound to play during configuration via harddrake, in RC1 I would hear sound but would fail in the setup, with the same message others have posted before (busy or irq conflict) Konqueror as a web browser needs a little more work. When clicking on the Konqueror off of the task bar, it displays a blank GUI. It should display HOME or something. When I go to a web site via HTTPS and there is a JavaScript, the script displays a message that the field entered has characters and is not allowed. After further investigation, the JavaScript isNaN is returning true when you put in only number. ( This same panel works under Netscape). Konqueror should somehow display something that it is at a secure site. A user has no visual clue that they are in a secure site without looking at the address bar. Long and winded, sorry. 7.2 is great and MS still keeps pushing the bar forward. Keep it up. Bob
