Hi,

ICQ and Jabber seem to work too. Good job.

Well, I am sure there will be a package in MandrakeClub, and probably very
soon on the free MandrakeClub mirrors, which are quite easy to install
from.

 I think users
really should be able to upgrade during the install procedure.

Upgrades aren't provided for stable releases. Security and bugfix updates
are. If this *really* qualifies as a bugfix release, then it will be
tested a bit in cooker, and then put up on the mirrors.

But consider samba3 for a moment. You can't print to a Windows2003 server,
or connect to it with smbclient with samba-2.2.x. We have had samba3
packaged in contrib since before 9.1 was released, and we(I) have done a
lot of testing of samba3, and 3.0.0 final was released 2 weeks ago.

But it stays in contrib, since it was too late for the release schedule
(we were already in version freeze).

So, users in networks with Windows2003 servers need to install
samba3-client from contrib, which will at least allow them to print and
connect with smbclient (they must use mount.cifs which is in main to mount
network shares) with minimal effort (by using alternatives).

Those of you who depend on gaim could have made similar arrangements ...

 Making

Sure, but it's just way too late for the 9.2 release itself, and a package
does at least need some testing (what if a vulnerability has been
introduced in the hasty implementation?), and most likely won't be
available for 9.2 until at least a few days after cooker reopens.

There is nothing that can be done now besides testing packages and/or
convincing the maintainer that this is worthy of a bugfix update (ie file
a bug).

Buchan

Once you have found the manual how to do that, indeed.

lot of testing of samba3, and 3.0.0 final was released 2 weeks ago.

One big difference: MSN and Yahoo used to work in Gaim, they don't work
anymore in 0.68. Yes, it is due to a protocol update, so it is not a bug of
Gaim, just a lacking feature. But Gaim pretends that it can connect to Yahoo
or MSN, so this is a bug in the eyes of any normal user. When I read your
samba 2.2 manual, I (assume I) can't find a section how to print on a Win
2k3 server, for Samba doesn't know Win 2k3 servers.

But it stays in contrib, since it was too late for the release schedule
(we were already in version freeze).

This is not a matter of depending on gaim, this is a matter of willing to
prevent reviews from writing Mandrake 9.2 is no good, it comes with broken
software

Mandrake has a nice update feature during install, let's use it, instead of
defining what a bugfix is. What is better ? A few extra kB of updates, or a
broken distribution ?

The problem that arises here is the bigger picture...
You say a few extra kB...
But once you open the bugfix/security updates system to this,
where does it end...??

People will start saying: ... but you updated that package ...,
and this package adds or modifies this or that feature that is needed... if
we don't have it I consider it's broken... and we can't have a broken
distrib...

so where do you draw the line...?
and since all packages always gets updated with more features,
or feature enchancements...

today gaim, tomorrow OpenOffice.org final..., and then ...

and suddenly the updates mirrors are not a few kB more... instead you will be
calculating the updates in MBs, then in GBs

So IMHO here comes the power of an Club membership...,

join the club and you will most likely get the downloads there...
and all are happy... (you get what you pay for... remember...)

Just for this reason alone I think there should be a Mandrakeupdate.com

(maybe include a copy of the PLF tool also)

Oh btw the mnadrake update thing seems to be a bit broken for 9.1 (no US

MandrakeUpdate can get the list from the existing sites.

Please, we don't need *even* more domain names for Mandrake, we have about
10 already, and they're all disparate sites with different navigation
systems, seperate identities/accounts etc.

Rather, there should be *one* site which is comprehensive enough for
everyone to find the details they need.

So what does everyone think about including gaim 0.70 for 9.2? I see it

Plus, if we didn't include it, reviews may talk about this issue saying
it was a poor decision of Mandrake not to include this bug-fixed

My 2 cents,

True, but I think the question was: can it be provided in the online updates
at the end of 9.2 install. While this is usually reserved for secutiry
updates, this may be an exception, since instant messaging is rampant, gaim is
the most useful client for it, and the shipped version is essentially useless
for all but ICQ and jabber...

Personally, I think the update is a good idea, but Vincent has recently shown
that I know nothing about updates in general. :-)

Add AOL-IM to the list of ones that still work under 0.68 release.

Really though, all that is beside the point. there are fully working builds
of 0.70 available from the Gaim project's site that are built especially
for MDK. Sure the gaim-encryption plugin isn't included, but that's enough
to have working MSN and Yahoo! support.

If you want to play with it, and you already have 0.68 loaded, can grab the

even though it complains about dependencies works great.

The package in 9.2, which is 0.68, will no longer work with Yahoo, and may

end if it's too late to get it on the 9.2 release CD's. This IS kind of a
special case, as a perfectly functional package at the date that things were
frozen became SERIOUSLY broken during freeze, due to external influences.

Installing a package with two of the three (arguably) most popular protocols
broken will NOT look good for Mandrake, and 0.70 seems pretty solid - been
pounding on it since it was released, both on Windows and Cooker.

If you want to play with it, and you already have 0.68 loaded, can
grab the package from gaim's website and load it on top of the cooker
package, and even though it complains about dependencies works great.

The package in 9.2, which is 0.68, will no longer work with Yahoo, and
may also have problems with MSN now due to protocol changes by those
   two chat providers :-(

Maybe we could cheat a little and put 0.70 in there? ;-). This would
help out new linux users that might be a little frustrated with Yahoo
and MSN. Maybe the developer's could see this as a bug fix?

If you guys do decide to include it keep an eye on the encryption 2.14 plugin
as it seems to build encrypt not encrypt.so though I dont know why. I just
did a :

#Fix encryption plugin
mv %buildroot/usr/lib/gaim/encrypt %buildroot/usr/lib/gaim/encrypt.so

[Cooker] gaim needs rebuild for new perl-base?

# urpmi --auto-select
The following packages have to be removed for others to be upgraded:
gaim-0.64-1mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied perl-base == 5.8.0) (y/N)

# rpm -q perl-base
perl-base-5.8.0-27mdk

rpm --upgrade --nodeps'ing perl-base-5.8.0-28mdk allows a urpmi to
continue without removing gaim, but rebuilding gaim with a proper
dependency on perl-base would solve this problem more effectively.

Vincent, I think in future could we avoid announcements like this on
cooker? If we were to have an announcement for every new release on this
list, it could get quite crowded.

Note that many maintainers either
-subscribe to the announce mailing lists for the software they maintain
-subscribe to freshmeat.net announcements for their software

If they don't, they at least get spammed by rpmwatcho every 2nd week with
their packages that are out-of-date (compared to freshmeat.net or Debian
or Redhat).

If some piece of software you use often is not updated within 2 weeks of a
new release (or if it's a critical update and we're near release), mail
the maintainer first to enquire the status.

For those interested, samba3-3.0alpha24 doesn't build at present on
cooker, it seems the quota interface has changed again (there is already
an inline edit in the samba3 package for 9.1 where it does build, same
inline edit doesn't work on cooker, but funnily enough samba-2.2.x built
fine ...)

Oh, and I will get around to pam_mount sometime ...

True, except the current version in cooker is more than one release old. If
indeed the maintainer were getting clobbered by announces, etc, I'm pretty
sure it would have been updated by now. Previous posts like this to jog the
elbow of the maintainer have yielded quick results, hence my post.

Again, if this were the case, why is cooker at gaim-0.62 ? My post wasn't to
nag, or to annoy the list.

For those who might be interested, the package at gaim.sourceforge.net works
for cooker, but there's a bug in the MSN plugin which will cause gaim to
segfault if the password is incorrect.

maybe you think that gaim is too unstable in gnome2 ( or gtk2 ) mode?

[Cooker] Gaim 0.59 package requires old perl 5.6 ?

2002-09-06 Thread Aleksander Adamowski

I've just posted results of my upgrade from 8.2 to 9.0 rc1 here

drive):
http://olo.office.altkom.com.pl/domowa/qa/mandrake/9.0/rc1/2002_09_05/

I've got the system running by manually onvokong mkinitrd.

Now I've performed integrity check by rebuilding rpm db (rpm
--rebuilddb) and running verification of all installed packages (rpm
-Va).
Here's the output:
http://olo.office.altkom.com.pl/domowa/qa/mandrake/9.0/rc1/2002_09_05/upgrade_8.2-rc1_debug_files/root/rpm-Va_after_rpm_-rebuilddb

I've noticed that the latest version of Gaim package,
gaim-0.59.1-1.1mdk, is dependent on an old version of perl:

Unsatisfied dependencies for gaim-0.59.1-1.1mdk: perl-base = 5.601

eperl-2.2.14-12mdk is also dependent on perl 5.601, and there are other
unsatisfied dependencies. Is it my rpm packages screwed by interrupted
install, or are those deps really wrong in RC1?

I brought this up a few days ago, quick fix is to remove .gaimrc and
.gaim/ from your home directory. gaim will start then, but for me it
would segfault again if you exited and tried to restart with .gaimrc and
.gaim/ there.

the other fix is to grab the srpm, add the configure option
--disable-perl to the spec file and recompile, I did this and have had
no more segfaults.

There is, you have to hack the spec so that you define the macro which
runs the spec-helper strip script to null so nothing is done.

And it seems to me that you get this segfault on startup? I cannot
reproduce it ... can you backup your .gaimrc and .gaim/ and do it from scratch
to see how you can reliably reproduce this problem?

i just grabbed the latest gaim cvs and it appears to work now.

one thing that i *failed* to try was to check for *conflicting plugins*!

i had almost all the plugins loaded. and one obvious thing could be the

nah. i just loaded all the plugins i had prior and sending a icq message
now works without crashing.

somethings up with the last released version. it appears fixed now.

keep in mind, that i tried rebuilding the cooker gaim on 2 seperate
boxes and did allot of experimenting and still got the same crash and
now the cvs version works fine.

thanx for the tip on gdb symbols...i'm going to track down the bug i
filed with the gaim bug system and advise them it's been apperantly
fixed in cvs.

patch is largely ok, just some quick comments on the filelist

gaim_applet should be in applet, that's ok but for the previous main
filelist we have %_bindir/* so we need to changed that. FIXED.

%doc is redundant.

%prefix/lib/gaim/* is redundant since we already have that in previous file
list. FIXED.

ditto for pixmaps and gnome/apps/Internet/gaim.desktop

I think for the CORBA server it should belong in the main filelist no?

the Network applets should be ok.

the %prefix/share/locale is redundant since we have %find_lang already
in the main package.

btw, just to make a quick comment is that you shouldn't really need to
define prefix to /usr -- that was the old way of doing it, these days
there are macros to do this for you like _bindir or _libdir, to see the
full list, you can refer back to the rpm rc files. They're actually
shamelessly ripped from autoconf :)

it's ok, because I fixed the smiley patch, I just removed the :/.

:/ is a valid emoicon but it is also a valid part of specifying a protocol
such as http:// .

Just curious as I may be wrong but why do you specifically have to define
sysconfdir as /etc, does configure not pick it up? (in which case it should
be _sysconfdir)

Be specific about what GAIM really is now.

ditto, see above.

   - Changed description

Just towards the bottom of the description you can see that it's just
being more specific about what GAIM does utilize/support.

ditto.

   - Added sub package applet (gaim_applet)

gaim_applet is the only way to go if you're GNOME user :) Not fair to
GNOME users to only have the option of using plain old gaim.

ditto.

Above and attached (also attached, my spec file.)

ok, got it, thanks.

   - Use --disable-gnome --disable-artsc for compatibility reasons on

  ok, but why?

Disable GNOME bits for KDE user compatibility reasons, disable artsc
bits simply because it's KDE centric, and the interoperability, so why
bloat gaim for GNOME users? And the same for KDE users? Though, it is
harmless to enable both of these, that's just MHO.

Let me check this one out.

no. It's useful but :/ is broke so I'm too lazy to fix this, and I removed
just that one but kept the smiley patch.

Hmmm yes, I was too lazy to even look at it :) Though I wasn't aware
that ':/' was the only thing broken, so revert that. Fix seems trivial,
but I don't have time to look at gtkihtml.c right now : P

in theory, you should be able to have a :/ once you make a little change
to the function (or maybe macro) which adds emoicons to the list of
emoicons, but in practice, the present function doesn't work for :/

So yeah, %configure is fine, I'm just anal, and like to use
 %configure2_5x : )

I'm going to upload my 0.3mdk to /incoming now

Well you don't have to since you already have sent a spec diff (if you want
the credit you can always include your changelot inside the diff file :))

[Cooker] gAIM needs updating

2002-02-22 Thread Vincent Meyer, MD

Hello,

Fresh install last night. gAIM has wrong server ID for Yahoo
protocol. Should be cs.yahoo.com. Changing to this makes it work, but
SHOULD work right out of the box on a new install, no?

[Cooker] gaim smiley patch

2002-02-10 Thread David Walluck

I have not checked exactly what this patch does, but there is a bug in
it. For example, anything with http:// in it turns into httpsmiley/. You
need to make sure that you look for whitespace following the simley (this
of course includes \r or \n eol markers.

[Cooker] Gaim 0.44

2001-09-26 Thread Chris Edwards

new gaim out:

http://gaim.sourceforge.net

version 0.44 (09/20/2001):
* More sane scaling of buddy icons (intelligently scale to
either 48x48 or 50x50 depending on icon)
* Have you ever had it happen where you cancel a login and
Gaim starts using all the available processing power? I
  think I fixed that.
* Temporarily removed Jabber user registration, which wasn't
  working anyway.
* Added a spiffy Help button
* Wrote a plugin for all those people who miss having the
chat rooms in their buddy lists (chatlist.so)
* Updated libfaim
* Added drop down selection to chat invitation
* Improved the look of the chat invitation dialog
* Improved the look of the proxy preferences
* event_im_recv and event_im_display_rcvd passed whether
the message received was auto-response (see SIGNALS)
* IRC fixes (largly copied from X-Chat)
* Internal change to how preferences are stored
* Other bug fixes
* Option to hide buddy icons

we are out of freeze now, and working on 8.2 right?
