Grief is such a hard word ... ;-) Okay.

Some of the modules that are automatically loaded from a xf86config
generated XF86Config file were missing in the XFdrake gernerated config
file. So what is the effect of this? Enlightment for example won't
start because of missing functionality of X11 when using the XFdrake
gernerated configuration.

My xf86config gernerated module section look like

##
Section "Module"

# This loads the DBE extension module.

Load"dbe" # Double buffer extension

# This loads the miscellaneous extensions module, and disables
# initialisation of the XFree86-DGA extension within that module.
SubSection "extmod"
  Option"omit xfree86-dga" # don't initialise the DGA
extension
EndSubSection

# This loads the Type1 and FreeType font modules
Load"type1"
Load"freetype"

# This loads the GLX module
Load "glx"

EndSection
#

The XFdrake generated one was near empty.

But I must say it is a couple of weeks ago, since I
last checked XFdrake. Maybe some things have changed
in the meanwhile. I dunno. I will give it an other try
this weekend ...

Cheers,
~Andreas

The config files are incompatible between these two Xfree releases.
You need the generate a new XF86Config file via xf86config.
Don't use the Draktools for generating config files for XFree86 4.0.
They are bad and evil (you will see the difference when you compare
XF86Config files generated from xf86config and XDrake).

No, not really. :-) i think a more correct one would be "lesser GPL". LPGL
is not necessarily for .so files, it can be for others as well. but in all,
LGPL is less restrictive than GPL, and does allow proprietary programs to
link to LGPL stuff while for GPL, anything linked must also be GPL. however,
you can link GPL stuff to non-GPL libraries, one of the good examples is
KDE, because KDE uses qt library, which has a really ugly qt license ...

Oops, sorry, I misspoke on "release".

It has definitely been announced
http://www.trolltech.com/announce/embeddedqt.html and it definitely exists
(not vapourware) as Haavard was demoing it at SD West in San Jose about
a month ago.

I just hope it has a license that allows the type of development that
the current QPL allows.

I know that a lot of effort was put into the current graphical installer,
but I was wondering if anyone is reconsidering now that Qt Embed has
been released and works natively with the Linux Framebuffer. It would
seem to be a way to get a high quality GUI during the installer without
worrying about getting XFree up and running.

Or is what is currently in place "Good Enough"
