the installer should be creating the bootstrap before you ever see the
partitions in diskdrake, on a NewWorld machine, if there isn't one
already. I don't believe yaboot cares where the bootstrap is, I put it
first as a matter of convenience, to make sure it gets created. The only
limitation I know is on some early iMacs, the kernel, and most likely the
bootstrap, need to be under the 6GB limit. On my revB, I use a shared
/boot for several installs to get around this problem.

Yep, the Apple's are definitely a moving target. I guess I'll never get
bored ;^) We do have support for both video adapters in the latest

I guess I was mostly reacting to the step being missing, since I'm so used
to seeing it in the PC version. Will the same people who get stuck in the
installer get stuck in runlevel 5?

Hmmm... how much spaces does KDE take? I'm sure you can fit GNOME

I don't know if it is the same on the 8500 but on the 4400, the internal
scsi bus is mesh and I've read somewhere (in the kernel's doc ?) that the
external bus is mac53c94.

Mesh works out of the box for me, with the Mdk8.0 2.4.4-6 kernel

Stew, I think we have a lot of works to best config for all machintosh, when
the first new titanium appear at my works and I see the 8.0 doesn't works, I
launched MacOs on mine and the new, I saw on mine ATY-rev3 and on the second

is not the same processor, not only a new revision.

There is a last test that I need to do, I remember in the 8.0, when we create
the partitions, diskdrak allow to create the / partition before the
bootstrap, but yaboot need the bootstrap is before on the disk. This is a
problem for newbie because all the install seem correct but there are no
warning and after the install you can't boot linux.
I will test this tomorrow because it is later and this need I crash my linux
partition, but think about that.

Thank's.

Yes, there should have been an offering like this:

Apple; TiPowerBook 1152x768; 0; 30.0-100.0; 50.0-160.0

You might get X working correctly from xfdrak of manually using those

Yep - x86 has been fighting the same prob - seems to be something to do
with the new menu, which seems to be fixed now on x86, so hopefully that
will trickle over to PPC too.

> Please let me know if you need any more info.

Phil, I'd be curious of a couple of things:

I've seen conflicting information as to whether the option is

video=radeon or video=radeonfb
also it may need to be appended with a mode seeting, ie:
1152x768-60, or whatever

Then I may need to do something to convince Xpmac to run in that mode, if
it can.

Also I'd be curious if the installed kernel, which seems to work, would
fare any better substituted for the install kernel. You could test this
by making a yaboot entry, similar to the ones on the CD, on your hard
drive, and using your live kernel instead of the one on the CD. It would
be sweet if we could get graphical install running properly on the TiBook.

Thanks

Beta1 report

2002-02-20 Thread Phil Lavigna

Hi,

Just completed an Expert installation with Beta1 CD1 on a PowerBook G4
550MHz (Radeon); here's my report:

After booting from the Installation CD, I tried various boot options
(radeon, riva, tdfx, aty), but DrakX was always split in half wrapped around
the monitor in a weird gold color. I didn't want to use the text-based
install, but was able to complete a graphical installation even with the
funky display.

When it was time to Configure X, I chose XFree4. The installer didn't ask
to test the configuration setting, so I answered "No" to the question about
automatically starting X.

The installation then completed normally, and Linux booted up without any
problems or errors. I was happily surprised that after typing "startx", KDE
started up nicely : )

The display of the desktop hangs about 1" off the right side of the
monitor. The left side of the screen has approx. 1" of black space running
down the depth of the display, and the right side of the desktop is missing
approx. 1" that is being cut off of the right edge.

The fonts on the KDE desktop look a bit distorted. It appears that the
video (1024) is being scaled to fit this machine's wide screen (1152). But
maybe the installer had a 1152x768 setting that I didn't notice because of
the garbled display.

Other than the video problems, the beta looks quite nice so far. KDE's
startup sound was nice and clear while entering the desktop (even though a
message was displayed that says "Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (Device or resource busy)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device)."

Please let me know if you need any more info.

Bye,
Phil

I am old with linux but on x86 only (lilo, grub, award bios etc), so
I have to understand some things...

for example: should I leave a Mac (with the MacOS) partition to have BottX
working ?

Theese are useful informations.

The last question is: if I put the hybrid burned ppc-8.2 cdrom on my linux
box (x86) i can mount and read with no problems all; but if I put the cdrom
in the old sony (on the Mac) the system say the cd have to be formatted.

Why ?

Not booting from the CD is normal on OldWorld - that's why BootX is
provided. I don't have access to any 8500's but I can tell you what
modules are used on the 7600:

SCSI: mesh
Ethernet: mace

mac53c94 is also used for SCSI on some older machines. I doubt the
integrated NIC is 3com, but I suppose anything is possible.

So this beta is based on beta2/x86 then? Because gnome works just
peachy in beta1... although I think beta2 had a lot more issues than
beta1.

Yup. GNOME is loading right now. =)

Hmmm... sawfish sure took a while to start. I spoke too soon. GNOME
starts, but does nothing. More required packages:

From .xsession-errors:

SESSION_MANAGER=local/imac.mandrakesoft.com:/tmp/.ICE-unix/2414
Gnome-Message: gnome_execute_async_with_env_fds: returning -1
sawfish: error while loading shared libraries: librep.so.9: cannot open shared object

/usr/bin/nautilus: error while loading shared libraries: libnautilus.so.0: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory
Nautilus has not been activated to display icons and gmc is not
installed. There will be no icons in GNOME desktop !!!

Ok... now I installed from cooker:

fam
libfam0
libcapplet1
libnautilus0
libpanel_applet0
librep9
libeel0
krb5-libs
eel
libsrvg1

After all of this, GNOME starts but sawfish doesn't...
.xsession-errors shows nothing, but trying to start sawfish on the
commandline shows:

error--> (file-error "No such file or directory" "rep/data/tables")

Hmmm... ok, after more digging, librep isn't being built properly
under PPC. It installs table.{so,la} into:

/usr/lib/rep/0.15.2/powerpc-mandrake-linux-gnu/rep/data

if I rename powerpc-mandrake-linux-gnu to ppc-mandrake-linux-gnu
sawfish starts.

Now if I logout then back in again, everything seems to be working.

Ack... again I spoke too soon... =) Nautilus doesn't start "due to
an unexpected error from OAF when attempting to register the file
manager view server."

Installing oaf from cooker fixes this... now when I login again,
Nautilus is drawing my desktop, but the icons don't show up, they just
look like sheets of paper (every one of them).

That's it for now... =)

In other words... there are a *lot* of dependency issues... I haven't
checked to see if these packages are on either CD...

XFree86-4.2.0-6mdk on Mach64

2002-02-20 Thread cjw

Hi,

This version of the XFree86 package contains the gatos ati.2 drivers, but
since my patch for PowerMacs was apparently never applied to the GATOS
source, this X server crashes because it can't find a BIOS. Below a patch
for this problem.

install-novideo brings up a blue screen, I see the X cursor, but
cannot move it, nor does anything further happen (waiting a few
minutes still showed no installer... just a blue screen).

I always install with expert... the problem is I don't know how to
pull up a pulldown menu of the available selections (same problem when
trying to get the ntp servers)... I'm sure there is a way to do it,
but it's not written on the screen nor is there any indication of what
it might be... tried TAB, SPACE, a few others... nothing.

It might be as simple as having something on the menu indicate what
keys are required to scroll through the list.

It has got no floppy.
It has got a build in ehternet, and a 3com (I think).

I am unable to boot from cdrom.
No way, no way, no way to boot :(

So I copied the BootX on the desktop and launched the BootX app.

The installer begins and I have to select from a cdrom installation or a

no modules are right for my old cdrom, my built in ethernet and so on...

How can I procede ?
