Re: [CnD] kitchenaid and pasta atachments

We have the pasta maker for the mixer as well and my husband is usually the one
that makes the pasta. Pasta recipes are pretty standard across the board as far
as I'm aware for the dough. It's what you put in them or on the pasta that
makes the difference.

Descaling is the key. The harder your water is the more you have to descale it.
It does sound like that hers is going bad again. I have lost one due to not
descaling enough but the other one seems to be going strong at this point after

A friend says her Keurig has to be replaced every two years: I was wondering
what other people’s experience was. My Hamilton Beach Flex Bru thankfully
seems to be ok after the two-year-mark. I do run vinegar through it
occasionally (am not using every day, just when I want a change or when it
wouldn’t work out to do a full pot), and, though not sure how successful I
am, a bit more often I try to use a pin to clear out the needle.

Anyway, with the current instance, when my friend attempted to descale her

very slow, and the motor is making n unusual sound.

Thanks for any thoughts for her.

I have a vita mix here myself so basically what happens is, is that the blades
spin fast enough to cause friction in the water to heat it up. I assume the
ninja works basically the same way. However, these blenders are quite loud so
honestly it's easier to heat water up in one of those electric tea kettle then
do the mixing of the soup in the blender for a lot less time. I assume the
ninjas are decent but the vita mix is have a very powerful motor and can chop

I'm not sure the clear label tape would be the best if you have a dial. to
mark small points on the dial that you want to find, little raised dots
work

best. and I do think you can find them at Office Depot ... Blind Mice Mart
also has them http://www.blindmicemegamall.com
SpottersT Tactile Adhesive Dots. Stick these little adhesive backed dots
onto anything you want to 'see by touch'. Ten .7 mm in height
Product ID: 730180
Price: 1.16

And I can't see what the concern is about such a thing ... It's not
marking

up the appliance, they can be removed and leaves no mark
Hope this helps

Clear dymo tape is your friend when it comes to making labels. It does
not

mar the surface and in the event that there is sticky residue when you
remove the labels, that can be removed with a product such as Goo Gone.

Just to add to this, once you are familiar with the types of dishes
and utensils you have in your kitchen I think it is the easiest to
load the dish washer as you go. When I finish eating or finish with a
drinking glass I put it into the dish washer. This makes it much
easier, and you don't have dishes sitting around on the counter to get
in the way or break. When I unload the clean dishes, I don't have any
problem as I can recognize the different types of dishes I use. Hope
this helps

I usually load the bottom part first with plates and silverware. I
put only the sharp knives like steak knives in point down, everything
else I put in handle down. I like to keep spoons together, forks,
serving

spoons, etc.

It's easier to unload.
I feel how the rows of prongs go in the dishwasher and then start
putting in the plates. I like to keep them in neat rows also to make
it easier to unload.
Then I pull out the top shelf and begin putting glasses in with the
top of the glass facing the bottom of the dishwasher; same for cups
and cereal bols. Some cooking utensils like slotted spoons, tongs,
big stirring spoons, can lay down on the top shelf. Anything plastic
also goes on this shelf - like measureing cups and storage containers
(make sure they are dishwasher safe and you have to ask a sighted
person).

I like to use premeasured packets probably of dishwasher detergent and
I don't use a softener to prevent spotting.
After a while, you'll get better at it when you use the same
dishwasher all the time. Do not put wooden utensils or wooden-handled
knives in the dw. I NEVER put sharp knives in even if they are dw
safe so that I don't cut myself when I am putting the dishes away.
So, there ya go. Hope this helps.
I use my hands to feel where things go and it takes probably 3 times
as long as for a sighted person. I don't care.

Debbie,
Hi, I have noticed with my stainless steel pots and pans I do not need the
temp as high for cooking. I also do not use cooking sprays, they seem to
leave that sticky type residue on which is hard to get off. I use butter

Hi,

I was wondering if you might be able to help me out. Back in late summer,
I
sent out a survey for my doctorate. Things are really coming to a close
and

at my preliminary defence one of the commentaries I received was that the
number of respondents was unfortunately quite low. So I am reaching out
to
everyone again to see if you might still be able to respond by Jan 22nd.
It
is definitely one of those things were a larger amount of responses will
really

help support my doctoral work and accessibility in general.

In the hope that you might be able to find some 20-30 minutes somewhere to
answer the survey, I'm including it below.

Cheers,
Kris

SURVEY

In order to validate (or refute) some of the theories in my doctoral
dissertation I am collecting answers to a short survey about graphical
user interface, and how they are used by people who are totally blind.
I am looking for brief information on how you perceive elements of the
user interface, and what they mean to you. It would really help me a
lot if you could take a few minutes to answer the short survey and send
me the answers in reply email.

As is common for scientific surveys, I do ask a few questions about
demographics. I have tried my best to limit it to non-intrusive
questions.

If you have any concerns with any of the questions (about GUIs or the
demographics) please feel free to email me also.

Thank you so much for your time. It is very helpful for me, and the
results will be incorporated in my dissertation. I also intend to make an
electronic version of the dissertation available after completing my
doctorate and I'd be happy to send you a copy when that time comes.

Yes! That happened to me a few times. If you are using the to go oatmeal
cups, you might either transfer it to a larger sized cereal bowl, and put
no
more water than is recommended into it before preparing. If you get too
much
water, this spew over occurs. It might be a tad thicker than you prefer,
so
when done, you can add more warm milk or warm water and stir in while on
the

table. I hated when that happened!
Watch your liquid amount!
I also have had it happen when I made the envelopes in a cereal bowl;
getting the liquid level precisely measured is the key to success.

If your inserts can come out, I think you can put them in the
dishwasher and be good to go on pot scrubber, lacking that, there's no
substitute for dawn dish washing soap and a lot of elbow grease. but
if you can make it a habit to clean it while its still semi warm with
good soapy water, the grease will break up and come off farely easy,
provided the teflon coding is still good.

I am probably the last person on earth to get a sandwich maker. I never

taking a good look at it I wondered if it would be possible to make things
other than sandwiches with it. So, went to my trusty friend, Google, to
see what I could find, all kinds of recipes there. I think I'm going to
really like this little gadget. Here's a recipe using Jiffy corn bread
mix.

SANDWICH MAKER CORN BREAD

INGREDIENTS:

1 8.5 ounce boxJiffy Cornbread Mix

1 egg

1/3 cup milk

shredded cheddar cheese

PREPARATION:

Mix up the box of Jiffy cornbread according to directions on box. Lightly
butter the sandwich maker wells. Spread a layer of mix in the sandwich
machine and add some shredded cheddar. Then add another layer of batter.
Close the lid and baked about 5-8 minutes.

If your apple is even the slightest bit soft it'll not peel right. The blade
is supposed to rest against the apple so when you crank the apple through it
will rub against the blade and you should get most of the time one long
continuous peel til the apple is through.

How to get it to peel? I do not know how the peeling blade is supposed to
go, because it takes off way too much of the apple when it is peeling.

YOu can get those oven mits with longer arms at say a BBBY as well and other
kitchen stores so don't feel you have to pay the mark up at a place for the
blind. No offense meant by this Dale because I am sure your prices are
reasonable but some others aren't if you do have these on BMM. I had a flat
cooktop and I am totally blind and had no problem with the top. You just
feel where the heat is and set pan accordingly and then slide it a little
one way or another depending if you feel a lot of heat or a little coming up
from where the pan should be placed. I too did not know there were lines on
sticks of butter. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and do the
container thing to scoop tea or tablespoons of ingredients out of. Good luck
on the cooking and you should stay on the list. It's not really that high
traffic and if you see a recipe you like you can relligate it to a recipe
folder in your mail program for later experiments.

Subject: [CnD] intro and a few questions

Hi all,
I am Alex. I am a senior in college for computer science. My family
loves to cook, so I have never really had to learn. Growing up with
cooks, though, has provided me with many hints and ideas, though I
have never applied any of this absorbed knowledge to any cooking
projects of my own. I know I will have to learn to cook sometime,
though, and now that my sister is temporarily unable to cook (she is
the primary cook in the house) I figure that now is as good a time as
any.

I have a small amount of vision. I can see a bowl on the counter, for
example, but cannot see that I missed some sugar while mixing; I can
see where the stove (one of those annoying cooktop ones) is in the
kitchen, but I cannot see enough detail to see the sides of the oven
or where the burners are on the flat top of the stove. With that in
mind, here are the questions I have come up with, after today's
adventure of making a cake:

1. For those of you with cooktops (where there are no physical burners
but rather just one flat surface), how do you position pots or pans in
the right place?

2. Perhaps this will come with practice, but one of my biggest fears
while cooking with an oven is that I will hit the sides of the oven
with my wrists or forearms while putting something into or removing
something from the oven. How do you avoid this, as potholders or even
oven mits only cover the hands, not the arms, and the arms are much
closer to the sides than the hands?

3. How, when you are mixing something, do you tell if you have mixed
thoroughly enough? While mixing the wet ingredients for the cake
today, I was told that I had missed a few pockets of sugar, but I
could not have felt this through the wisk.

4. How do you pour liquids into measuring spoons? I can manage cups
well enough, though pouring oil is difficult as it is hard to feel,
but I cannot figure out a good way of pouring into spoons? I
considered putting things like oil or vanilla into larger containers
so I could just take a spoonful, but is there a better way that would
not require such large containers?

5. Tomorrow's experiment may be spaghetti (our family does not believe
in canned sauce, so it will be from scratch). How will I tell when the
ground beef is browned? Similarly, how would I tell if a hamburger or
steak was done? What about other types of meat being prepared on a
stove (as opposed to in an oven where a thermometer could provide a
good indication)?

6. Has anyone come up with a way to figure out where the teaspoon
markings are on a stick of butter? I had to have someone score the
butter at the teaspoon line so I could cut off the right amount. In
fact, before that, I had no idea that such marks were even on sticks
of butter; I always thought you just had to soften the butter and take
a teaspoon to it somehow.

7. Are there any good websites for recipes? By good I mean both
accessible with a screen reader and containing good-tasting dishes.

TIA for any help. I may not stay on this list long as school starts
next week and so I will not have much opportunity to cook anything,
but I hope to figure a few things out for this week and then try again
next time I am home on break.

Is it possible to make granola bars or other type bars with whole
chocolate chips mini or regular?

My husband claims that he has eaten a brad of granola bar in which the
chips were not melted.

Every recipe I have ever seen says to put the chips in with the other
ingredients like oats, brown sugar etc. and bake for -- amount of time.

This would melt the chips? yes. no?

I purchased a flattop stove which has lines raised around each burner.
However, even if your stove doesn't have such markings, you can use it
successfully with a little practice. Hold your hand a few inches above the
burner to feel the location of the heat, and then place your pan
accordingly. I find I do this just as much as I position pans according to
the lines surrounding my burners.
