Tony,

Super!
I just stopped running PAX Coworking last month,
and start traveling again. Just visited the North Pole ;-)

Two spaces as children of PAX were born this month.
I will tell them to use this.

2014-11-12 Thread Kyo Satani
Aaron,

We have 400 in Japan, 200 in Tokyo, 100 in Shibuya area. Too concentrated
in Shibuya because of the high rate of office vacancy.
Most of them are not like 'coworking', but like shared office: nobody
speaks...

That's why we created the new magazine on paper.
These days local governments in Japan eager to pay for the office space.
So we want to advice them to create 'right' spaces.

 Dear All,
Earlier this year we opened the first coworking in Astana called

very content with the place and their fellow coworkers. You can see
different groups of coworkers interacting with each other on a daily base.

I have attached some photos below, let me know what you think. Also you

2013-11-11 Thread Kyo Satani
Hi, Coworking friends.
Three of the coworking spaces owner in Tokyo (PAX Coworking,
OSS Cafe, Hatch Coworkin) were invited by Seoul Metropolitan Government
and attended the Conference on Social Innovation. Now they have 7
Coworking spaces but many people are trying to open. I will later share
the report after being published.

By the way, one year has passed since we published the English version
of the book on Coworking on Kindle. And we opened a new facebook page
about this book yesterday. We will put all the documents on this page.
   https://www.facebook.com/lets.start.coworking

I and coauther (Kenichi Nakaya, Yutaka Fujiki) wrote our experience of
the concept and short history of the coworking in Japan. I hope the
documents on this page will of your help.

If you want to read it through immediately, you can also get this book here:

a cowork space. Currently, we have about 5 confirmed members and need about
10 more to move forward to secure the office space. I would love to hear

Re: [Coworking] International Coworking Day: The Closest Friday to August 9th

2013-07-31 Thread Kyo Satani
Hi, friends.

Sorry I couldn't catch up with this mailing list.
In Japan, most coworking pioneers respect the Brad's activity
on 9 Aug 2005 and celebrate on that day. So I would like to stick
to 9 Aug.

btw today is the 3rd anniversary of PAX Coworking. PAX is the first
coworking space in Tokyo and the second in Japan. So,
3 years ago, there was only 2 coworking spaces in Japan
2 years ago, there was 6.
And now it's increasing. We have, maybe, more than 250 coworkng
spaces all over Japan.

This is surprising, but unfortunately, most new space owners don't know
about Brad Newberg, history of coworking, coworking visa nor coworking
day. I would like to inform them and make them understand the importance
of that day and coworking community all over the world.

And these days there are more salaried employees (salary-man in Japanese)
visiting, not just freelancers. For them Friday might be special.

I will stick to August 9 and have another coworking event/party on
the Friday closest to August 9th for Friday lovers.

Great article. Interesting stories of history and direction of coworking
in Japan! Love PAX's goals and aims, actually..

We are opening soon the first coworking space in Saudi Arabia, in Riyadh.
So, we would love to know more about the conference and its contents,
 talks, and opportunities.

Well, the tech and freelancing markets have drastically started growing in
Saudi Arabia, in the last 1.5 years. There were some trials of providing
shared working spaces here, but none of them was dedicated and emphasizing
on the community and the coworking feeling. So, from here came my idea..
I have been to few coworking spaces when I was living in Sydney, Australia
and my partner has seen and heard of the hubs in the states.. So, we
decided to bring the good that we know and provide the first space,
 community and hub..
We gave it a bit formal name: The Work Hub :)

Please let me know more about the conference..

[Coworking] JELLYWEEK 89km runnning (Glocal Cialthon)

Let's run 89km each during the JELLYWEEK 2013 !

89 is the number of peace. Let's everybody run 89 km for a week while
thinking about peace of the world, peace of the area, peace of your family
and inner peace.

Decide your own course and schedule by yourself. You can measure distance
and time by using smart phone application (e.g. runtastic is one of the
useful running applications for iPhone and Android:
http://www.runtastic.com/http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.runtastic.com%2Fh=ZAQEpHG8Ws=1).

Let's share the experience and feeling on this wall. This is the new style
of Cialthon, which we can share knowledge and thought globally by running
your own local area.

Why 89km?

In Japanese, 89 can be read as 'PAX'(peace in Latin), and this number is
the same as the distance of the Comrades Marathon, which takes place every
year in South Africa from 1921 to pray for the lasting peace.

What is Cialthon?

Cialthon stands for Social Marathon. It is a new type of marathon which
puts more value on the social connections and communication among
participants and local people. Memories are more important than time
results. By sharing experiences gained during this event with the other
participants, we tend to increase the joy of running even more.

What is JELLYWEEK?
JELLYWEEK is glocal collaboration event, which takes place annually each
3rd week in January, for coworking, techie, innovation, changemaker,
entrepreneur and other problem-solving networks. Let's Jelly at your local
place, connecting globally.

Re: [Coworking] Who else is celebrating Coworking Day?

2012-08-06 Thread Kyo Satani
Hi, Susan.

This is Kyo from PAX Coworking, Tokyo.
We are going to celebrate Coworking Day on August 9, by havnig
big Jelly and discussion about future of Coworking. And we also ask
other coworking spaces in Japan to celebrate at each place.

And at night we will have a big party at paxi house tokyo, a downstair
restaurant of PAX Coworking. August 9 is a paxi (coriander) day,
so we enjoy coriander cuisine with lots of kinds of beer from all over
the world.

Happy Coworking Day!

 Hey coworking folks!

The Seattle Collaborative Space Alliance is hosting a celebration of
Coworking Day this Thursday, August 9th. Anyone else out there celebrating?
If so, let us know! It'd be fun to tweet along with one another. :) We'll be
coworking and then BBQing together at one of our awesome neighborhood
coworking spaces in Seattle - Collective Self.

If you're in Seattle, please get in touch and we'll send you the details!

[Coworking] First Coworking book in Japanese

2012-05-08 Thread Kyo Satani
Hi, coworking folks,
This is Kyo from PAX Coworking, Tokyo.

The first coworking book in Japanese will be published on this friday!
  http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/4862489168
Now the book is just #100 on amazon.co.jp ranking.

Most of the members of this mailing list can not read Japanese...
but I just want to tell you all about the amazing growth of the coworking
conept in Japan.

We had no coworking space in Japan two years ago. The first one opened 15
May 2010,
and I opened second space in Japan (first in Tokyo) in July 2010.
Honestly for the first year, we have almost no guest except the days of
event.
And since last summer some media started writing about coworking.
Tony from New Work City came to Japan at the same time and influenced us a
lot.

We introduced some of the coworking spaces outside Japan.
The publisher sent the copy to New Work City(New York), Utoipc_US(Madrid),
Space at 8 (Singapore) , Xindanwei (Shanghai) and so on. Please visit
these spaces to read (or just see the photos) this book.

Thanks for your attention.
We are waiting for your visit to Japanese coworking spaces.

Why don't you have Jelly again and again.
I opened PAX Coworking 20 months ago, and at first we had
no members. I held the first Jelly and continue having Jellies
once or twice a month and tell people the goodness of Jelly and coworking.
We had 52 Jellies so far and now we have one of the best coworking

Tokyo and have more than 20 members.

Good luck!

Re: [Coworking] Xindanwei Coworking Manual downloadable from app store

2012-02-22 Thread Kyo Satani
Liu Yan,

Excellent. Henhao!
I will spread this app to the coworking community in Japan.

Kyo paxi

2012/2/23 Liu Yan liuyan.dat...@gmail.com

 Dear Raines,

Thank you so much for the thorough advice, I will check up the creative
commons license in China mainland and make sure it is included in the next
version. Basically we want to respect the author's right of Rigour: how to
change a world-changing spaces, and to keep this publication under the
same license as requested by its authors.

In regards to the translation, it has been truly a headache. The first
intention to write this Coworking Manual (Manual, not guide) is to
summarize and share our work with thousands of people in China who have
been supporting us or even want to become part of us. So naturally I wrote
it in Chinese, right before our app development started, our sponsor of the
app development - a furniture company called Haworth suggested that we
should translate it into English to maximize the impact and they are
willing to sponsor the translation cost. So without a second thought, I
agreed. But as you have imagined, the translation turned out to be quite
imperfect, I ended up spending a lot of time editing it to correct the
simple words like coworking, creative commons etc. The time was limited and
I rushed to send out a version to our app developer, which appeared, not
 the final version...

I agreed with you about the format of this documentation. My initial idea
was in app and PDF format online. But later on I had some argument with my
partner about leaving it online in PDF format. I think I still need to push
him to get this pdf done in the next version.

It was great meeting you too in Berlin last year, wish you all the success
with the preparation of Austin Global Coworking Unconference.

 cheers, Liu Yan

On 2012-2-22, at 下午11:32, Raines Cohen wrote:

 Liu Yan,

It was great to meet you at the European Coworking conference in Berlin
last year, and congrats to you and your collaborators on getting this out
the door and in the store.

I found it impressive to read a book that translates itself with the click
of a button, full of documentation of your fresh approaches and adaptation
of methods in a new platform, a reminder to all of us that if we rely only
on Western culture for ideas, principles, and operating methods, we will
miss many opportunities and innovations and inspirations.

I've got the same question as Rachel. Particularly since you reference in
the introduction opening it up under a Creative Commons (CC) license, yet
you don't specify which form/version of CC license, and the text
surrounding it seems to contradict the basic CC principles/advantages
 [emphasis mine]:

Locking away this knowledge is against our principles: we believe nowadays
the value of any knowledge can not last and old knowledge can only generate
new knowledge through the process of sharing. Hence, we are sharing our
knowledge and include this Guide in the Creative Commons License system.
We demand that our readers comply with the Creative Commons License [text
that follows appears to be obscured] have to reserve our copyright and
 *inform
us of your use, or which part you wish to modify or edit*. We hope this
approach will encourage more people to share their knowledge too.

 and a little further on:

We shall initially publish the Guide in pdf and iApps form but later on we
may make amendments or supplements to the Guide.

Most CC licenses that allow re-use, for either commercial or noncommercial
purposes, while requiring attribution (unless you explicitly choose not
to), have as a key element the right for anyone to modify or, should you
choose, edit and republish derivative works *without informing you or
asking for further permission*. This is one of the key elements that CC
adds - the ability for others to build on and amplify and further
distribute your work without waiting for you to give permission or risking
further investment on the chance that you will not grant permission or not
do so in a timely fashion.

I suspect that some nuance of your intention may have been lost in
translation here; your guidance as to how people can best take your great
work and build on it and distribute it further would be most helpful.

As you say in the Beyond Space section:

We proposed a new style of work slogan and set about trying to change
the working environment in Shanghai, China and even the whole world that is
currently closed, isolated and *excessively controls intellectual
 property rights*.

I believe we are all in the process of finding a new balance in this
arena, between control and engagement, invitation and relationship.

There is one strong clue to what the appropriate license would be: Your
text credits How to create to change the world space from the Centre for
Social Innovation in Canada -- which seems to be
 Rigourhttp://socialinnovation.ca/sssi:

 Konnichiwa, Bernie

8000 sq ft! You are making huge space!
PAX Coworking is only 89 sq meter.

I think you try not to segment your space.
The less partition, the better. I think it's better to put huge
coworking lounge in the center of your space, and a few
 conference rooms around.

When Tony (NWC) came to Tokyo last week, we agreed
that 'if a person just do his job and do not talk to anybody,
it's a failure as a Coworking space. Coworking space
is community rather than space/place, and comfortability.

Why don't you have Jelly before you open your space.
The targets need to experience what coworking is and
they will know if it's fit or not for them.

Jelly is saikoo (the best) way to make people understand
 about coworking.

 Michelini,
Surprising! There are so many people attending at your

 Hi Kyo,

Thanks for reaching out! :) I'm sure I'll have lots of questions! We are
currently looking at an empty space of about 8000 sq ft. My first step
 involves two parts:
 1) Trying to figure out how we can segment the space
 2) Targeting the right group of people

May I know what considerations you had when you build your coworking
space? Is it located in a central part of Tokyo? How popular is it in Japan?

 Thanks,
 Bernie

Re: [Coworking] Hello from Singapore - new coworking space coming up!

2011-08-12 Thread Kyo Satani

Michelini,
Surprising! There are so many people attending at your
startup weekend!

 Hi Kyo,

Thanks for reaching out! :) I'm sure I'll have lots of questions! We are
currently looking at an empty space of about 8000 sq ft. My first step
 involves two parts:
 1) Trying to figure out how we can segment the space
 2) Targeting the right group of people

May I know what considerations you had when you build your coworking space?
Is it located in a central part of Tokyo? How popular is it in Japan?

 Thanks,
 Bernie

Hi, Idham

Glad to hear that you are opening a coworking space in Brunei.
I hope we have much more spaces in Asian countries.
I opened the first coworking space in Tokyo last August, and
now there are several spaces for coworkng and jelly in Tokyo.

The situation depends on the members. Some people come
to the space everyday, others less than twitce a week.
Have you already had prospective members? And how many?
You can redesign your space afterwards. Let's share our experience.

This is a great resource for finding out more on coworking. I'm about
to start a coworking space in Brunei. Question is, how do I calculate
how many members I can have for my open space section that is members
who don't have a permanent desk or private office. I'm planning to
have about 20 tables and chairs for those monthly membership levels
that come in 3x any day of the week. Surely I can sign up more than 20
right? Cause not will come at the same time.

 Manifesto

We are a group of connected individuals and small businesses creating
an economy of innovation and creativity in the Valley. We envision a
new economic engine comprised of collaboration and community, in
contrast to the silos and secrecy left by the dependence on tourism
 and land development.

We have the talent. We just need to work together. Different
environments need to overlap, to connect and to interact in order to
transform our culture. In order to create a sustainable community
 based on trust, we value:

 * collaboration over competition
 * community over agendas
 * participation over observation
 * doing over saying
 * friendship over formality
 * boldness over assurance
 * learning over expertise
 * people over personalities

This new economy cannot thrive without engaging the larger business,
creative, entrepreneurial, governmental, and technical communities
 together.

We believe that innovation breeds innovation. We will transform the
Valley culture into one supportive of the entrepreneurial spirit, of
risk taking, of pioneering into the unknown territories as the
founders of our municipalities once did. This requires education,
 entrepreneurship and creative workspaces.

 We are Gangplank.

  Hi everyone,

I am happy to announce that a collaborative project between four

  coworking spaces.

The data we are using is
  *here*
 https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AoXBCgiLNmuddGdHbld6SENiU1N2
Please feel free to edit your data or submit your space if you don't
 find
it (*please don't change the format!*). We've collected data for 394
coworking spaces. A lot of the research began through the coworking wiki
and then extended through web search. The goal is to keep this data open
 so
everyone can update their info at any time or add a new space.

  The app is designed to:

  - Be a mobile database of all coworking spaces worldwide

  - Allow people to find coworking spaces in their city or in cities they
  visit

  - Help coworking spaces find new members

The app will be submitted very shortly, within the next two weeks.

We hope that eventually it can become a way to identify and communicate
 with
other people who believe in the coworking movement and are a part of it!
  We
view this as a great way to help make the coworking movement become
 closer,
as there has been much discussion over this recently on the group
 (coworking
  blog, coworking conference, etc.).

Feedback is more than welcome and in fact encouraged. We want to

  Please
let us know what you think! The best way is by contacting us at

Re: [Coworking] Coworking and Beer?

2010-10-21 Thread Kyo Satani
In Japan, there's no problem bringing beer to anywhere.
And our space (PAX Coworking) allows coworkers to bring whatever he/she
wants.
We have coriander cuisine restaurant at 2 Floor, and everybody just went
downstairs
and buy mugs of beer.

Kyo paxi
http://coworking.jp/

2010/10/22 Alexander Lang langa...@gmail.com

I guess that heavily depends on the country/state you live in. Here in
germany we actually have a bar in our space and our coworkers can just grab
any drinks they want (including beer) if they drop a € into a jar. i think
in most places there's also a big difference between offering alcohol to the
public vs. to a closed group (coworkers, office).

 cheers,
 alex

taken into the copy shop during the last one, but not for serving alcohol!)

I had asked my insurance about it and they were totally cool as long as we

the appropriate permits (a one-time liquor license, which is pretty easy to
 get in NY State).

Hi, Moritz

This is Kyo Satani, one of the founding members of the mailing list

In Tokyo, there are some office spaces for small businesses and
for independent workers, but most of them are, I think, still far from
coworking space.

I just opened a coworking space last month, at Setagaya-ward.
We still don't have English website, but if you have any question,

 Hello everyone,

my name is Moritz Moeller. I'm a founding member of the /*jupiter jazz*/
group. We are a 'tribe' of professionals, backed by a company of the
 same name.
We are scattered all around the planet. Most of us work from home but
some travel a lot. In both instances, coworking is something that has
been our radar since a while.

For those of us who are working from home and don't have a family it's a
way to escape the solitude from time to time and for those who are
traveling it's one of the best ways to connect with other people on
 location.

Our website (see signature) has lots of information on who we are and
 what we do.

I'm currently in Hamburg, Germany for another month before I head off to
Tokyo in October. I work from home currently but wanted to check out the
two coworking locations in Hamburg that I'm aware of, soon.

Tokyo brings me to the first question: are there any people on here who
do coworking in that city? What coworking facilities are there?

 Cheers,

I have been thinking about a shared office for more than a year and just
a few months ago I ve got to know the ideal space I have been dreaming
is called 'coworking space'. And I joined this group in May.

Now I'm very much interested in sharing spaces and achievements with
lots of coworkers, and we are going to open new coworking space
alongside our office upstairs of the restaurant in August. Let's work
upstairs
and let's party downstairs.

Now I'm thinking abou the pricing. We will have a great space for work
and relax, and we also have ustream facilities. Anybody live or come to
Tokyo in July, please contact me.
