Still a bit to do as you have a large number of markup errors see
http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkhomes2000.c
o.uk%2Fmain%2Finvestments%2Fpensions%2Fpersonal-pensions%2Fpersonal_pensions
%2526p_pensionsbox.php

The "blockquote" element is raising a fair number of errors.

Maybe I am being thick but cannot see any quotations on the page so why are
you using blockquote?

I did miss something so here is a solution:
Couple of things. Class name is misspelt in the style sheet and the
blockquote is interfering with the sub style.
Is this what you are trying to achieve?
 http://iyesolutions.co.uk/templates/css/28-05-09/

Just the unordered and ordered list for clarity.

What is happening is that the list is wrapping around the floated image. If
you want the list to be on the left you will need to wrap all the text on
right hand column in a div that is floated right. Clear the floated divs and
have "Treatment Approach" in a div below.

I will leave the code to you unless someone else has a bit more time.

Instead of having text in a far away place through CSS. Put your text in the
alt tag.
This works for me. If you have any more problems give me a shout as this is
not really a CSS issue.

This is fairly basic CSS box model unless I misunderstand the question.

Try this
body {background:#fff;margin:0}
.container {width:700px;margin:0 auto;background: green}
.top {width:500px;margin:10px auto 0;background:red}
.bottom {width:500px;margin:0 auto;background:blue}

Background colours there for illustration.

Still not sure what it is you want. If you want a submit button using an
image and CSS which changes at rollover, then I think we have shown you how
to do that (with exception of IE6). If you want the submit to work with
rollover instead of click then that is not CSS. Other than that I cannot see
what it is you want.

No, there's no image being used there. Right now I am doing this:

you haven't looked closely enough as the blue and yellow are images.

And you are right, it doesn't work in IE6. If you don't want the text to
shine through leave "value" blank but ensure that you specifiy height and
width for the submit button.

Although there is no change to the html, I have had to add an extra style
code in the contact and portfolio pages as the menu sits a few pixels higher
than does than it does on the other pages.

Please ignore the validation errors which are caused by the cms editor
(something over which I have no control) - don't believe that these are
influencing this issue.

Looks the same in Safari as in Firefox (Vista) to me.

I don't see any logo at all. Large print is at bottom of image in both
browsers.
You might also fix your html (mainly mistyping of Javascript stuff)

Hi Tim

This has been in discussion a few times.
Here is the link that will help you.
http://www.mondiara.com/graphics/valign.html

It is based on display:table and display:table-cell where your div acts like
a table.
Follow the CSS in the example and you will find all you need.

Maybe I am being thick here, but I cannot see the issue. I have checked the
CSS with the validator and it passes.
However, may I suggest that you define the body background colour. It came
up pink on my Opera which has pink specified as background.

First question one would ask. Why would you want a centre column so wide
that it would break out of its wrapping div?
However, I guess if you set the div to act like a table then I guess it
would do what you want or have I missed the point?

In the CSS you have

.rollover a:hover img

visibility:hidden;

Not sure why. There is your reason for image disappearing on hover.

You didn't mention that the images were in links.
IE 7 can have issues here which is why a link can be useful and we can check on
all the various browsers that we have kicking around.

In my experience there are a few things to check if images don't load
There is an html error or more likely, I have forgotten to upload the image
to the given folder.

More than that is difficult to say without a link.

As you can see everything is where it should be. Just need to sort the

[css-d] SWFobject not sitting in DIV

2009-03-20 Thread Ian Young
Hi folks,

Isn't it always the way. Last thing Friday stuff comes up.

Have just picked up this neat project.

However, before I can make any headway I need to sort out Flash and make
compliant and all that.

http://www.iyesolutions.co.uk/templates/the-swipe/home.html

It should sit inside the contentCentre div but clearly doesn't.

Not sure if this is something you guys can help with but would appreciate
your thoughts.

Thanks Georg,

The layout had changed due to designer using a different strapline png.

There are a couple of other things that I think will make a difference and
may not need "fixes"

I have fixed the conditional.
It must be the IE tester then that is not displaying properly as the address
png is most definitely down more than other browsers in the IE7 rendition.

[css-d] IE7 and whitespace.

2009-03-13 Thread Ian Young
Hi guys,

Last throw of dice before the weekend.

Trying to get elements to line up across the page.

Just about sorted in FF/IE8, Opera, Safari and have fix in for IE6, but IE7
just won't play ball.

See

http://www.dbadvertising.co.uk/dev/home-test3.html

The "address" image has extra space between it and the nav2 div above.

Any thoughts?

BTW As it is a work in progress the png images are not all fettled for IE6.

I suspect this one will generate a lot of flak.

Last item first. Why counter the browser defaults?

Leave font-size as 100% and then use % for font-size of your other elements.
Have a thought for the visually impaired, please.
What you are saying is illogical in any event. Font-size defined by em or %
will only be different if the user decides that he/she needs to increase size
of the default browser settings. Web design is different from the print
environment and too many folks seem to forget that. We get too hung up on
browsers being pixel perfect. Let's face it the only folks who look at more
than one browsers are we developers.

Rant over.

I have gone for option1 and it seems to work fine, so that will do nicely.

Hi Philippe

That fixes the overflow, but the cell now shrinks to size of image, which is
not what we want.
The div is 700x500 with images in centre.

I have made changes so you can see what I mean.

[css-d] overflow:hidden and display:table

2009-03-03 Thread Ian Young
Moving on from yesterday's vertical align div, I have set up code to
vertically align images in a wrapping div.

That's fine. However, images which are larger than the div and which
normally would be controlled by overflow:hidden, now spill over.

Any thoughts?

I would have thought that this was not possible with CSS.
Simple enough with php tho'.

I am using this with client site at the moment.

That's it really sorted now, Georg.
Interestingly when I first started this template format, I couldn't get the
borders to display properly - hence the extra wrapper.
This is really what I wanted - simple template with minimal html.

I really appreciate the time you have taken on this.

Thanks Georg
I had tried outer div with display:table!

shows the finished article for IE8 and FF.
Before doing "live version" will include hacks for IE.

It is centring but not displaying properly in IE8 FF3.06

Thanks Georg,

This almost works. Vertical align works ok, but the wrapper div that is in
effect being vertically aligned stretches to full width of window even tho'
it has width defined.
Overflow:hidden has been included.

[css-d] vertical align div

2009-03-02 Thread Ian Young
I have been playing around with vertically aligning my main portal.

The code I have been using has two main problems.

1. It appears to need to be on the page to display the vertical
alignment

2. It loses its horizontal alignment.

http://www.iyesolutions.co.uk/templates/portfolios/template3/vertical-align.
html

The red background is just for testing.

The vertical align code is on the page.

There must be a more elegant method, surely.

[css-d] Margin not working!

2009-02-21 Thread Ian Young
Hi guys

I must be really stupid as I cannot see where I am going wrong here. I
cannot remember this being a problem before.

Top margin in inner div is just pulling both divs down rather than having
border all round.

See http://www.iyesolutions.co.uk/templates/css/portfolio-test.php

Looks pretty straight forward. On line 232 you have missed an end tag for
the list. Although the validator has come up with 20 errors, they are all
connected with that one error.

Ok I have installed new IE8 and everything is working fine now (apart from
IE's usually very slow loading).
Have taken conditional out altogether and both IE8 and IE7 work great.

Thanks again for all help.

I confess I had delayed installing IE8 as hadn't been at all impressed with
the Beta version.
Done now..

Ok folks, it would appear it has to do with the IE8 beta that is on my
system that is supposed to be emulating IE7 and clearly isn't.

Now the following changes seem to make it work - no idea why.

Phillipe's changes plus following changes to David's conditional.

Defies logic.

But presumably the changes to the li rule make it work in IE7 but need the
addition of conditional for IE8.

I apologise if I have sent you chaps up the wrong path and thanks for all
your help.

Not on my system it doesn't. Sorry David.

I did try a number of those changes to no avail.
I have IE7/8 on Vista could that be the problem?
Interestingly if I remove .nav2 a, it works fine in IE7 but, of course not
on the others. Display:block is clearly the issue and I have tried display

I have just fired up an old laptop with XP and IE7 and yes, the above works.

Now does that point us in direction?

Thanks all so far.

Tried that but to no avail. However, as height is specified in each of the
classes, not sure how this would help.
Where exactly were you thinking about the overflow hidden?

[css-d] IE7 Images in unordered lists

2009-02-10 Thread Ian Young
Hi Folks,

I have a menu with images for the links. FF, Opera, Safari, Chrome all
render ok. IE7 has huge margins between the lists.

What's the fix for this?

Test page at
http://www.iyesolutions.co.uk/templates/db-test/IE7-menutest.html with CSS
included.

I have tried a few tweaks but none seem to work.

Cheers

[css-d] Horizontal scrolling

2009-02-01 Thread Ian Young
Hi Guys

I am looking at simple gallery where you can use horizontal scrolling.

If I use the overflow:auto, both horizontal and vertical scrolling are
enabled.

So how do I disable vertical scrolling so that site scrolls horizontally?

Okay dokay, Michael.

First things, first.
You have no doctype specified and probably best to start with
http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd";>
http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml";> at the top of your page.
Then go validate it at
http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ba-doyn.com%2Fj
unk%2F

Now, I am not sure whether you want the whole portal to be centred and if
that is the case you will need some extra code in your CSS,

Body {text-align:centre}
Not sure why you have float:left for the container div (but I may be missing
something.
If you want the container to centre you will need to specify width and
margin - probably
#container {width:1024;margin:0 auto}

Also ditch the code in the html and add margin:0 to your body spec in
css.

Cheers

Re: [css-d] a png not displaying!

2009-02-01 Thread Ian Young
Ingo,

I finally worked out what the problem was and, of course you had the solution.

Why I couldn’t work out what was happening was because those images that were
displaying were being sourced from root/images and the image that wasn’t being
displayed was in root/dev/images.

All sorted and many thanks

Best regards

Ian

I've inserted an absolute path and then this path I've mentioned and it worked.

Remember that the path is relative to the document for filters, not relative to
the css or whatever.
But starting from scratch is always good.

http://www.dbadvertising.co.uk/dev/index-test.php

All the pngs display in IE6 fine with exception of the address logo
Style sheet is at /dev/includes/ie-fix.css and /style-new.css.

for the filter, you have
src='../images/Adress-top-3.png'

but the correct path should be

src='/ images/Adress-top-3.png'

Sorry Ingo,

The correct address is ../ images/Adress-top-3.png'

If we used 'images/Adress-top-3.png', then the url would be
dbadvertisng.co.uk/dev/dev/images/Adress-top-3.png'

Other images use the same format and work fine. So that is not the case.

If I take out all the main CSS but keep the ie-fix.css, everything works,

Guess I will have to start from scratch and work it up.

Cheers

2009-01-30 Thread Ian Young
Nah

Sorry that doesn't make any difference. The script is designed to replace
what is in the html. I don't think the problem is in the ie-fix, because if
I strip everything out and just use the .flash_home div it works ok.

However, if you look at page now, I have made the changes to save any
confusion.

[css-d] Png and good ol' IE6

2009-01-28 Thread Ian Young
This an old chestnut, I know, but I have tried several fixes to make the png
work on IE6 and it doesn't.

Now I don't know whether this is due to the fact that I amusing IE6 along
with IE7 but the filter is not working.

Quick test page at

Can you have a look and see if works for you and if not any suggestions?

Thanks in anticipation.

[css-d] IE7 and background image links.

2009-01-22 Thread Ian Young
Hi all,

Long time since I have been on.

Am using background images in menu (don't normally use images but needs
must).

Thing is in IE7, the links are not working. I guess this is because there
isn't anything in the actual link.

Have Googled and found nothing, can you help.

Test page at

[css-d] Border causing extra space!

2008-06-25 Thread Ian Young
Here's one I have not come across before.

Have border around two sides of div but this causes an extra space at the
top of the div in all but IE7.

Style is border:1px solid #a71010;border-left:none;border-top:none

If I comment out border-top then extra space is gone but of course I have
the top border!.

If I write the style long hand (border-right: etc and border-bottom: etc)
then space is there.

What Have I missed?

Page is temporarily at http://79.170.40.177/soloaccounts.com/test.html

Very simple CSS is at

Hi guys,

Not been on for a while.

Been looking at the white-space rule and came across this on client's site.
pre{
white-space: pre; /* CSS2 */
white-space: pre-wrap; /* CSS 2.1 */
white-space: pre-line; /* CSS 3 */}

What is best usage?

Apologies if this a daft question.

Yep done that and obviously works fine. The reason for query is that the
template is being developed as a Joomla template and is part of a faux
column set up that has to be a minimum height to satisfy the designer's
requirements.

In addition, I wanted to define the text size in case the online text editor
didn't add a paragraph tag.

Thanks anyway.

[css-d] Change of font-size in div affects div height

2007-12-03 Thread Ian Young
Hi guys,

Odd thing happened here. Added font-size to a div and it changed the height
of the cell (and other surrounding). If I change from ems to px for the div
height it is ok in that div but others with height in div are affected.

I have not come across this before.

simple mocks at

Try changing your csshover.htc call like this:

body {behavior: url(csshover.htc);} /* WinIE behavior call */

You are calling the csshover from the style sheet not the html page.

OK, thanks for all help. Back to drawing board PDQ then. I did think that
min-height may be where I need to go and that was first port of call this
morning. I did try faux column early on, but didn't work to designer's
liking (obviously didn't get it quite right).

I don't really like fixed height at best of times but hey I am only the
builder.

That is odd, Georg as the only browser that I have problems with is IE6 and
I have tested this on several computers (mac included) and resolutions.
Looks as if I am going to have to hardcode all the widths and heights. I am
restricted on the dimensions of the site as I am not the designer - just
trying to emulate the designers' brief. Fluid width has been rejected.

Any thoughts then?

[css-d] A question of ems and good 'ol IE6

2007-10-19 Thread Ian Young
Hi guys

The weekend is upon us but hope some you guys are still at the desk.
Just completing a site and thought that everything was coming together
nicely then had a look at IE6 on a monitor with different resolution ad hey,
it's broke.

The height of the divs is set in ems. However, where there are photos the
site breaks.

If I hardcode the divs then it works ok. Clearly this ain't good.

http://www.iyesolutions.co.uk/templates/harbour/index2.html
http://www.iyesolutions.co.uk/templates/harbour/includes/style.css

I really don't want to have to write an IE specific style sheet. Have
Googled but nothing relevant.

Any thoughts?

That is surprising. However, the navigation links works on my system, IE6/7
FireFox, Safari PC.

Hi Ross

You have called the htc file from css/iepngfix.htc.
Shouldn't this be ('./iepngfix.htc') as the "fix" is in the same folder as
the CSS?

Or have I missed something?

Bruce,

Just cos, you say it is a poor idea, doesn't make it so.

However, no one is making you use it. If you don't like it so be it.

I have to say I think it is rather elegant and there is a neat logic to it.

I use CSS that I feel comfortable with and this has evolved over the years
as I become more knowledgeable (long way to go yet).

But hey, why we getting heated over something that is optional anyway. If it
works for you (and it does for me) then why gripe.

Have a good weekend.

[css-d] Anomaly in FireFox

2007-10-05 Thread Ian Young
Hi guys

Unusual one (for me). I have a div that doesn't align properly in FireFox
and as a temporary measure have put a couple of extra but of course
this doesn't render properly in IE6 (and is very clumsy)

I have tried a number or different alternatives margin settings to no avail.

http://www.iyesolutions.co.uk/templates/harbour/dinner.html with style at
http://www.iyesolutions.co.uk/templates/harbour/includes/style.css

It must be simple but it looks like I cannot see the wood for the trees.

Couple of things strike me. No margins or padding set in the floated

Also you may need to have display:inline for ol' IE6.

Because you have used min-height and min-width, the log doesn't appear in
IE6 at all. (IE6 doesn't recognise min-width or min-height). In fact the
whole site looks, well, odd.
In the header div there is an extraeneous */ at line 131 which may be
affecting things thereafter.

Hi Ross,

you need to define the list as the float and then position:relative as per:

#cat_menu  li {float:left;position:relative}

#cat_menu  li a{
color:#ccc;
/*float:left;*/
position:relative;

Oops, sorry. I remember now.

In response to EMB. I was reacting to his response to Georg. If I caused
offense I apologise but only for that. I have learned so much from everyon
on this list that I take offense when someone appears to be dismissive.

I'll say no more on the matter.

Have just had quick look - no great time for detail. Site doesn't work in
IE6 at all. The footer is about 20-300px in depth and the content overlaps
this. This is usually a "clear" issue but I note that you have "clear:both"
in your footer.

As for menu, not even top line is showing in IE6. Best to sort that first
and then try and add the slidey bit. This will need either javascript or the
hover.htc script to make IE6 do the slidey bit.

If I remember correctly (we seem to have been going around the houses for
ages on this topic) , the issue was a 5 col layout that had equal lengths.
Dead easy in CSS and much tidier than tables. This smacks of an argument
that raged for some while on WebProWorld - bj will no doubt remember it
well - where one contributor ranted (yes, ranted) about how much easier an
creative tables were than CSS. After a year or so, the same contributor did
a volte face and is now totally converted to the CSS cause. Main reason - he
took th etime to understand the difference in approach and how to use CSS.

The folks who have tried to assist you in this know what they are about and
are very knowledgeable about both table and css layout. No need to scorn -
read an learn my friend.

I reckon that if it is table based, you can build with a CSS layout. I have
just rebuilt a table based design (neat but different on every page) and
rebuilt using CSS. It wasn't easy and I reckon that if I did it again it
would be even neater HTML wise.

Lots of folks who use Dreamweaver rely on tables and there are lots of
really excellent designers who don't have a clue about valid html far less
CSS.
I guess it was ever thus.

Keep the faith

 It was!

I moved the clearing div to below the #innerr .pfolio div and that solved
the problem.

Couple of thoughts. You have mark up errors so go sort these first.

Have you checked the style sheets individually?

Having looked at the site I cannot see the fault.

I note however, that the home page is aligned left and rest of site is
aligned center. Different style sheets?

have tried that and it doesn't make any difference. The interesting thing is
that if the screen is enlarged to full screen the bottom appears ok and
stays there.
I have tried the fixes in the peek-a-boo but to no avail.

Thanks for looking

You might want to sort out your mark-up errors first:
