SF 689, The Complementary and Alternative Health Care Bill, had been passed in the Senate Government Operations Committee, the final policy committee. Our bill has now passed all policy committees in the House and the Senate, and is referred to the Health and Family Security Budget Division, chaired by Sen Linda Berglin, for recommendation regarding financing. We are truly elated over the progress our bill has made in the last two weeks. We do indeed feel that we have been laboring, and have given birth to a bouncing baby bill. After clearing all of the policy committees in the House of Representatives last week, on Monday of this week, it cleared the House Health Finance Committee and was laid over for possible inclusion in the Omnibus bill. Many thanks to Rep. Fran Bradley, GOP, Chair of the House, Health Committee, Rep Steve Smith, GOP, Chair of the House Civil Law Committee, and Rep Kevin Goodno, GOP, Chair of the House Health Finance Committee, for giving us hearings. Then we faced a deadline looming of ONE WEEK to clear all Senate policy committees. Lots of people said it couldn't be done. But our bill was heard on Tuesday in the Senate Health Committee, and passed. Thank you to Sen. John Hottinger, DFL, Chair of the Senate Health Committee for the hearing time! Wednesday, it was on to the Judiciary Committee, which also had a very full schedule, but thanks to Sen. Jane Ranum, DFL, Chair, who squeezed it in, it passed that committee. Senators Linda Berglin, DFL, and Deanna Weiner, DFL, also gave eloquent support of our bill during the debates. Thursday, Sen. James Metzen, DFL Chair of the Gov Ops committee fitted us in his schedule, and we again passed that committee on an overwhelming voice vote. We made the deadline! Many thanks to all the legislators, both GOP and DFL, who gave us an opportunity to make a case for the injustice of the present legal system regarding natural health care. In all, we had 13 separate hearings in two subcommittees and seven full committees, for a total of 15 hours of committee work. The legislators have scrutinized our proposal, every jot and tittle, added and trimmed and tweaked, (sometimes to our consternation,) and finally pronounced it as good public policy. We just can't give enough thanks to our two strong chief authors, Rep. Lynda Boudreau, GOP, and Sen. Twyla Ring, DFL. They have advocated for access to natural health care with their whole heart, and much of our past success, and hopefully future success, depends on them. We still have a long road to hoe, because the legislature as a whole must now make its final decisions regarding bills which have passed committees. If our bill passes, it will take effect in July, 2001, and will establish a new Office of Unlicensed Complementary and Alternative Health Care in the Department of Health. We are told there is still much work ahead of us before passage is final. We are learning as we go, and that's part of the charm of this grass-roots movement. We go to the lobbying room, and are surrounded by lobbyists in expensive suits from every conceivable powerful interest group, working their cell phones and lap-top computers! We're just plain folks, and so are you, who care about access to natural health care, and look what we have done together! Some legislators have told us that what we have accomplished so far is "just remarkable." A big part of our success so far has been that you folks have made your wishes heard, loud and clear, to the legislators, and as a result, they have responded. Senator Twyla Ring, our Senate author, showed me her file of consumer letters regarding this bill. I counted almost 60, all letters from the heart. In addition, phones have been ringing off the hook at the Capitol in support of the natural health bill. Boy, have these legislators learned a lot this year regarding health care options they never knew existed! You gotta say they have had an open mind to new ideas. You've done a great job! But you can't quit yet, and neither will we, till we really reach the end zone. This has been a huge collective effort on the part of many people. We will continue to be over at the Capitol every day, doing what we can, but public support is crucial at this point. We ask you to write letters to the people who will be leaders on the Floor on this issue. We'll let you know as we find out, but please start with thanking the above-mentioned people. Specifically, there are numerous technical signs that gold and select gold stocks are being accumulated ahead of the financial panic that will blight the global economy beginning later this year (see our previous article "A Crash, But Not Yet" for details on this coming crash). When we look at the daily bar chart for gold, we see evidence of an upward (accumulation) cycle in the form of a bowl formation, the sides of which are currently providing support for gold's price. The fact that gold and the XAU-a leading gold market indicator-have held their own throughout the year in spite of general commodities weakness is one positive. Bowl-shaped formations in the charts of several gold stocks (particularly Canadian golds) is yet another sign that accumulation is underway by insiders. What is even more promising is the open interest line for gold futures on the COMEX. Gold open interest, more so than perhaps any other tradable commodity, tends to move in almost perfect cyclical fashion, and the open interest cycle is clearly up. This indicates growing trader interest in the metal and provides further support for the bullish case. Other technical indicators, particularly volume-based indicators, also suggest a general accumulation phase presently underway in the gold market. The big story in the precious metals market right now, of course, is the recent show of strength by platinum and palladium. Palladium futures soared to new contract highs two weeks ago on supply fears, and its price was temporarily capped in a crass attempt at forcing the longs to liquidate. What the chart shows, however, is a massive upward parabolic cycle still in place, forecasting an even higher rise in the weeks to come. It never pays to mess with the free market, and any attempts at capping palladium's price will surely backfire. Market technician Stan Weinstein used to talk about a concept he called "the big move after the big move," and this appears to be the case with platinum. Get ready for the second big move. Silver is a trickier market to call. It was recently suggested by one prominent analyst that silver had been relegated to industrial metal status and was therefore disconnected to gold's price movements. We disagree with this assessment. As we pointed out in our recently-published book, Elliott Wave Simplified, silver is due for a big runup towards the $7/oz. level or higher in the months ahead. This no doubt will be connected with gold's big move in relation to the coming stock market crash. One area of disagreement we have with gold analysts concerns the outlook for the U.S. Dollar. Contrary to what most believe, a stock market crash does not necessarily translate into a dollar crash. In fact, given the deflationary nature such a crash is likely to take (and indeed, deflationary signs abound) the dollar can actually be expected to strengthen, not weaken. The chart bears this out, as several major supporting trendlines are guiding the price line higher, slowly but steadily. Keep plenty of cash on hand along with your gold and silver in crash-proofing your portfolios. We would like to address a couple of responses to our crash scenario that readers have recently submitted to us. Foremost is the belief that an equities market crash will not occur this year because the Year 2000 is an election year in the well-known "Presidential Cycle." This cyclical theory asserts that an election year almost never witnesses a significant decline in the equities market since the president seeking re-election does not want to leave a bad taste in voters' mouths with regard to the economy; hence he will do everything in his power to bolster the stock market. However, it is rare that a president is elected to two terms, as Clinton has been, thus the theory becomes a bit more tenuous on the ground that the departing president has nothing more to gain from voters. And besides, presidents, politicians, bureaucrats and central bankers ultimately have no control over the over-arching forces of the grand cycle (K-Wave). Their efforts at bolstering the markets can only succeed insofar as the trend is on their side. For the better part of 20 years it has been, but that is about to change this Fall. We would venture (an admittedly wild) speculation that the presidential elections will be suspended once the crash hits, and Clinton's reign extended under emergency powers in order to "lead the nation through the time of crisis." And we're convinced he would get away with it since Bush and Gore don't exactly conjure up images of strength, vision and

Sean Hannity, today sitting in for Rush Limbaugh, talking about and apparently salivating over, the upcoming battle between that pair of old druggies, W. -Caveat Lector- A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/" /A -Cui Bono?- www.wsws.org WSWS : News Analysis : Australia South Pacific Huge security buildup for Sydney Olympics By Mike Head 14 March 2000 Back to screen version As the Sydney Olympics draws near, details have been made public of the extensive buildup of security forces that will blanket all venues and significant parts of the city during both the Paralympics and the Olympic Games in September and October. Up to 5,000 military personnel, as well as armoured vehicles and Black Hawk helicopters, will be deployed at the Games, including all of Australia's Special Forces. In addition there will be thousands of New South Wales state police, hundreds of Federal Police, scores of intelligence officers, 30,000 private security guards and tens of thousands of Olympic volunteers with powers to search, remove and detain people. Security and intelligence agencies from other countries will also be active, including armed US and Israeli officers. US warships will be stationed off the coast. Over the past 18 months, rehearsals have included helicopter missions across the city and throughout the main Homebush Bay site, the mock storming of jumbo jets at Sydney airport, and the boarding of ships in the harbour. Sydney residents, and people travelling to and from the city, are already under police and intelligence surveillance. Various groups have declared their intention to stage political demonstrations during the Games, highlighting issues such as the enormous financial cost, corruption and profit-making associated with the event; the social impact in terms of soaring rents, homelessness and budget cuts; and the continuing oppression of Aboriginal people. According to the Daily Telegraph, security sources are also concerned that anger over the high prices and lack of availability of tickets may also lead to protests. The Olympics security operation is setting three precedents that have far- reaching implications for freedom of expression and other basic democratic rights. First, sweeping powers to stop protests are being extended to police and others across the metropolitan area. Secondly, preparations are being made for the extensive use of the military for internal policing. Thirdly, foreign military and security personnel will operate unilaterally in Sydney, with or without the cooperation of their Australian counterparts. NSW police chief Peter Ryan has sought to justify the security build-up by describing the Sydney Olympics as an almost irresistible magnet to terrorist groups. Other security commanders, however, have rated the danger of terrorism as low. Regardless of these differences, Olympic authorities, police and military officers have bluntly stated their determination to prevent the Games from being disrupted in any form. A warning to anybody who wants to interfere with the Olympic Games: we will interfere with them, Brigadier Philip McNamara, the Special Forces commander, told a luncheon gathering of current and former military officers on February 29. We are prepared to meet any challenge. These authorities are anxious to protect the multi-billion dollar commercial interests of the sponsors, advertisers and authorised media outlets. The intent is very clearly there to make sure there is as much legislative clout to protect the operations of the Games and the key stakeholders, Olympic Co- ordination Authority director-general David Richmond told a conference of Olympic sponsors on February 29. The state government intends to pass the Olympic Arrangements Act by May. It will extend to all Olympic sites, and public spaces in the city and harbour foreshore, the powers already given to the Olympic Co-ordination Authority under the 1999 Homebush Bay Operations Act, which covers the main venue. That Act allows the Authority to appoint authorised persons or enforcement officers with powers exceeding those held by police. Neither the Act nor the regulations issued under it specify any qualifications for the appointment of these persons. Yet they can: * use reasonable force to remove people * prevent the distribution of any material * stop the use of any camera, recording or broadcasting equipment * ban anyone from areas under their control * search people and their possessions * demand names and addresses and proof of identity * photograph alleged offenders * seize property * issue on-the-spot fines of up to $200. These appointees may or may not be in uniform; they will simply carry an ID card, to be shown on request. They will have wide scope for exercising their powers. Preparations include increasing training in crowd control and the purchase of riot equipment. During the WTO protests, the courts upheld the right of Seattle officials to carry out what amounted to a suspension of constitutional rights. A federal judge ruled during the WTO convention against a request by the ACLU to nullify a 25-block no protest zone, asserting the city had sufficient justification for reasonable restrictions on public freedoms. City officials in Los Angeles and Philadelphia, sites of the upcoming Democratic and Republican Party conventions respectively, have taken particular note of the Seattle protests. Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordin has expressed concerns about possible demonstrations at the Democratic convention this August. He is reportedly dissatisfied with security preparations for the event and recently asked his staff to work with convention organizers, the FBI and the Secret Service to settle on a security plan. Philadelphia Police Commissioner John Timoney has asked for an additional $5 million for his department to cover overtime, training and expenses and the Pennsylvania State Police is asking for $1.9 million to purchase new riot equipment for its troopers. Seattle has got to be a part of what we need to do here, said a spokesman for Timoney. There is going to be a whole host of training for police ... depending on the nature of their assignment at the convention. The International Association of Chiefs of Police reports that attendance has doubled at courses it offers on critical situations," which include training in crowd control. Last month police officials from Las Vegas, San Diego, Minneapolis, Tulsa and Washington DC attended a conference at the FBI Academy in Virginia to assess the lessons of the Seattle protests. We're reviewing all our policies and procedures, said one Nevada lawman. We recognized in Seattle that there was an entirely new approach by protestors It's not that they're heading here, but we need to know if there is a new shift in what we should expect. On March 8 the American Civil Liberties Union filed a new action in federal court claiming Seattle officials violated constitutional rights by banning protests in a wide area surrounding the venue of the WTO meeting last fall. Mayor Paul Schell imposed a 25-block no protest zone and police carried out indiscriminate arrests. "The city made it a crime to engage in perfectly lawful acts of free speech," said staff attorney Aaron Caplan of the Washington ACLU. Since December the ACLU says it has received 500 complaints from protesters about the treatment meted out by police. One person was harassed for passing out copies of the US Constitution. Another was arrested for distributing a political cartoon from the New York Times. Police tackled him from behind as he attempted to give a flyer to a passerby. The ACLU complaint seeks damages and names the city of Seattle, Mayor Schell, former police chief Norm Stamper and two police officers who carried out arrests of protesters. One plaintiff in the ACLU suit was a WTO delegate who said he had been talking with a group of protesters before his arrest. Why the pattern? It is readily explainable. Clearly, no ethnic group on the face of the Earth is particularly susceptible to insane delusion or acts of violence associated with insane delusion. The history of the entire human race is a tale of unremitting carnage caused by acts of tribal warfare. Rather, the American intelligence community selected microwave weapons research subjects from the general population based on their ethnic background, and this has caused latent effects in the victims. Why would this have been done? Was it based on some genocidal impulse in their research protocol? No, it was a consideration based on science, both applied and military. The U.S. intelligence community first began experimenting with microwave harrassment after they found the Soviets were using it against our embassy personnel in Moscow in the 1960's and 1970's. In the early 1980's, the CIA's Technical Services Support division (TSS, or "toss" in agency lingo, because they are "tossed" challenging technical assignments) began using microwave energy on involuntary human subjects in the U.S. population after the CIA detected that the Soviets were using it against Afghan soldiers in their war against Afghanistan. At that time, strategic planners in the West were shaping the entire Western defense strategy around the world war scenario they most feared would come to pass with devastating consequences -- a Soviet invasion of Western Europe with conventional forces that would escalate into a nuclear conflict between the Soviet Union and the United States. If Western allied forces were going to have microwave weapons readily at hand to interfere with the performance of Russian soldiers, bombarding them with microwave energy at a distance, causing them, inter alia, to become disoriented, lapse into unconsciousness, fall down in epileptic seizure, vomit uncontrollably, or be filled with an overwhelming sense of anxiety, to cite several of the known human health effects of microwave energy, they would need to select guinea pigs from our own society who shared genetic similarities with the Russian, Polish, East German, and other Eastern Bloc soldiers who would be part of the nuclear-tipped tank brigade that they feared would invade Western Europe. Hence, they selected the closest cousins of the Russian people immediately available to them to study. In the United States, those populations included Polish Catholics, German Americans, and Ashkenazi Jews of Polish and Russian descent. They especially targeted individuals from these ethnic groups, who were easily identified at work or school by virtue of their distinctive ethnic surnames, as innocent victims of these inhumane, barbaric, unwarranted, illegal, and unconstitutional experiments, mostly, it seems, to perform calibration studies to test the psychological and physiological effects of these microwave weapons at escalating amplitudes. That is why we also see this curious range of victim impact evidence, ranging from several odd, unexplained incidents involving such symptoms as mental disorientation, nausea, or unconsciousness, all the way to behavioral symptoms mimicking paranoid schizophrenia. I will forward this memo to the organizers of the East Coast mind control event in April, with a request that they take an "ethnic identity survey" of attendees whose harassment began in the early 1980's. Perhaps by using a sampling technique of this kind, we can connect the performance of these sinister covert tests with members of specifically targeted ethnic populations, and thus establish, by extrinsic evidence, that these tests were performed with particular empirical goals in mind in light of the geo-political context that surrounded them. In this manner, we will bring into the bright daylight of public recognition, retribution, reparation, and reform more information about this sorry chapter in the military-industrial-intelligence complex's 50-year war against the American people. We condemn the indiscriminate killing of civilians in Chechnya and the bombing of villages and towns and other assaults on civilian objects, including hospitals and buildings used for religious purposes. Most of the republic has been destroyed. Medical staff and patients have been shot dead by Russian soldiers. We condemn the use of prohibited weapons by Russian forces. Having gained control of inhabited areas, Russian forces intimidate the local population, in many cases arresting or executing civilians on the spot. What Russian authorities name an anti-terrorist campaign, is in fact widespread harassment of the civilian population, with no respect for human life and dignity. No civilian in Chechnya can feel safe in any part of their homeland. Freedom of movement within the republic is denied, with special permission demanded by Russian-controlled authorities from every civilian moving from one district of the republic to another. The mass random arrests, which threaten the local population in every part of Chechnya, lead often to detainment in filtration camps run by Russian forces where beatings, torture, rape and killings are commonplace. The Chechen peace activist Zura Betieva of the Union of Women of Ichkeria was arrested at her home in the Naur district one month ago and has since been held with her son in the filtration camp 'Chiornokozovo'. The Chechen Minister of Health Omar Khambiev and around fifteen members of his medical staff have also been in such a filtration camp since the beginning of February. 200,000 refugees living in Ingushetia face poor conditions and insufficient assistance. Adequate nourishment and medical treatment are particularly lacking. The Russian Ministry of Emergencies closed down canteens in the refugee camps in February, and supplies of bread for refugees has been reduced in March. We fear this to be part of the pressure being applied by Russian authorities to move refugees back to Chechnya. However most are afraid to return to face harassment by Russian forces, the threat of filtration camps and the continued bombing and raids, and the majority have lost their homes. Internally displaced persons within Chechnya face even worse conditions than in Ingushetia, with almost no help being provided. Even basics such as electricity, gas for heating and cooking, basic food and medications, are absent. Food for many is in short supply. We consider the first Chechen war and the present war to be crimes against humanity, peace and civilization. Political and military authorities of the Russian Federation in particular must be held responsible for the crimes that they have committed. The Russian leadership has throughout the war in Chechnya pursued the consistent and systematic policy of genocide, denying any possibility of a peaceful solution to the issue of the Chechen people's right to self-determination. We call on the international community to: ? denounce clearly the military operation and violation of human rights in Chechnya and increase pressure on the Russian government to halt the military aggression, withdraw troops from Chechnya and conduct peace talks with Chechen authorities, primarily with the democratically elected and legally recognized government of president Aslan Maskhadov, and with a third party to act as a guarantor for agreements reached in negotiations. ? deploy immediately in Chechnya an international monitoring mission, with a mandate from an inter-governmental human rights body such as the UN human rights commission, the Council of Europe or the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, to monitor and assess all evidence of human rights violations and war crimes. No, it is not your imagination. A source close to the issue has reported there may indeed be an order to reduce news of escalation regarding solar flares, CME's, Gamma Ray burst and other solar activity. This included NOAA's "Space Weather Advisories". Just when I have thoughts of NASA's Public Relations division having adopted a policy of "inclusion", I witness almost two weeks of omission. I continue to believe there is an internal struggle within NASA to capture the hearts and minds of the public. Having witnessed NOAA's report last Friday regarding the cause of our weather being related to solar activity, all may not be lost. I remain hopeful "inclusion" wins out. Equation: Sunspots = Solar Flares = Magnetic Shift = Shifting Ocean and Jet Stream Currents = Extreme Weather As a mental health professional who specializes in PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder), I am convinced it is far greater to include the public on unfolding and escalation events. Let people prepare in each persons unique way for events to come. Again, it will be the sudden shock of occurrences that will cause the most damage. This is not Y2K. Events have already begun. It is not a question of If events are going to occur. It is a question of How and When. Wilkerson's supporters say a stay should be issued immediately because of flaws in the Warrant of Execution. The flaws were uncovered thanks to Ward Larkin of the Abolition Movement. Larkin attempted on March 6 and 8 to obtain a copy of this public document from the office of Charles Bacarisse, 184th District Clerk. That office was unable to produce the Warrant. Attorneys Dick Burr and Mandy Welch finally obtained a copy March 13. According to Larkin, who has reviewed the document, it contains serious factual errors. "Article 43.15 of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedures says that all Warrants of Execution 'shall recite the fact of conviction.'" Larkin said. "Ponchai Wilkerson's warrant does not do this. There is no mention of his conviction for the offence of Capital Murder. There is only mention of the death sentence. "The first paragraph [of the warrant] says that Ponchai Wilkerson was sentenced to death on July 16, 1991. This is not true. He was actually convicted of Capital Murder on July 16, 1991. The day the Court of Criminal Appeals affirmed his conviction is also stated incorrectly." Larkin said: "One would think that with all of the executions and death sentences that come out of Harris County, the courts would know how to write an error-free Warrant of Execution. Such is not the case. If a death-row prisoner's attorney makes a mistake or misses a deadline by even one minute, the execution is carried out. Why isn't the state held to the same standards?" The call for an International Day of Action has gathered far-flung support for a moratorium on Texas executions. Protests are planned in Italy, New York, Chicago, Detroit and other locations. Recent analysis of the magnetic fields that make up this region suggest there is a distinct possibility of a major M or X class solar flare sometime over the next 3 to 5 days. The trailer spot complex of this region contains a delta magnetic configuration where opposite polarity sunspot umbrae are encompassed by a single penumbra. Strong magnetic field gradients have been measured along the neutral line that separates these opposite magnetic polarities. The concern right now is that recent detailed magnetic analysis performed by Mees Solar Observatory in Hawaii (http://www.solar.ifa.hawaii.edu/mees.html) have revealed significant levels of magnetic shear along this same neutral line. These factors, when considered together, suggest that there may be significant levels of pent-up magnetic energy within this region. The largest solar flare from Region 8906 observed thus far was a class M3.6/1B event late in the UTC day of 12 March (if x-rays reach the class M5.0 level, the flare becomes a major category event). Although there have been no major levels of activity from this region since its appearance on the eastern solar limb, recent data supports the idea that a major M or X class solar flare is very possible over the next several days. The overall pattern of the magnetic fields near this region are not unlike some in history which have produced major X-class flares. Sunspot Region 8906 is large and complex enough to spawn a major proton producing solar flare. Such events can affect the health and stability of satellites in orbit around the Earth and can wipe-out ionospheric communications through the polar regions of the ionosphere. Although there has been no hard evidence yet to suggest that Region 8906 is capable of producing a proton flare, it is at least statistically large and complex enough to be capable of doing so. Any major solar flares that occur will likely be associated with coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that should be well-directed toward the Earth over the next 72 hours. Thus far, there have been no significant observed Earth-directed CMEs from Region 8906. But this could change rapidly if this region spawns a major flare event. Observers with hydrogen-alpha filters should pay close attention to the region around the trailer spot complex. White-light observers may want to pay close attention to sunspot group as well, for if a major X-class flare develops, there is a slight chance it may produce a brief white-light manifestation of the activity (known as a white-light flare). Although the odds of such an event occurring are extremely low, they are still worth considering. Reavis Express-News Staff Writer A Texas state trooper who stood guard as the flames were subsiding April 19, 1993, at Mount Carmel, told lawyers Wednesday that he saw a cargo van enter the property and leave carrying a body bag, that a rental truck spirited debris away from the scene and that he heard FBI agents discussing a gunfight. Sgt. David Keys, a 17-year veteran of the Texas Department of Public Safety, provided details of his observations in a Waco deposition for attorneys in a wrongful death suit that Davidian survivors have filed against the federal government. Keys told the lawyers that, at about 4 p.m. on April 19, some two hours before Texas Rangers took custody of Mount Carmel from FBI agents, he was told by Texas DPS personnel he should allow a white mini-cargo van to enter Mount Carmel "to pick up a body," plaintiff's attorney James Brannon reported. Keys also said that when the van left the site, he looked inside and saw a body bag with a shape that could have been that of a corpse. "The van that Keys saw could only have been kept secret, at that level, by the military," Brannon declared following the testimony. "If somebody was killed, they could just say that he was killed in a training accident. It's a mystery who it was and we're waiting for somebody in the government to tell us." The van, Brannon said, never has been mentioned in hearings and inquiries into Mount Carmel. "Keys also says that he also saw something as big as a door being loaded into a U-Haul truck. One of the doors from Mount Carmel has been missing since the day of the fire - the door that might prove that during the Feb. 28 raid, the ATF fired first," Brannon said. Testimony in the 1994 San Antonio trial of 11 Branch Davidians established that one of Mount Carmel's twin front doors was missing; the other was entered into evidence in the trial. The missing door, defense lawyers insisted, would show agents of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms had fired at unseen targets during the raid. According to Brannon, Keys also testified that earlier on April 19, 1993, while Keys was at the DPS Waco commando center, he overhead an FBI agent who said that a "firefight" was under way at the back of the Mount Carmel compound. Plaintiffs' attorneys have alleged federal agents fired upon Mount Carmel's back side in the final moments of the tank-and-tear-gas assault of April 19. Justice Department officials did not immediately respond when asked to comment on Keys' testimony. Top Music Headlines Chrissie Hynde arrested at Gap protest Chrissie Hynde arrested at Gap protest (Launch) - Pretenders singer Chrissie Hynde was arrested in New York City last Thursday during an animal-rights protest at a Gap clothing store. A police representative said that approximately 20 protesters from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals organization were protesting at a Gap store. The group was protesting the clothing chain's alleged purchase of black-market leather. After they had entered the store and began destroying goods, Hynde and three others were arrested and charged with criminal mischief at approximately 2 p.m. ET. Hynde and three other protestors were led away in handcuffs and taken to the Midtown North police precinct. Hynde said the clothing chain's leather jackets - with inside labels that read "Made in India" - are made of leather from cows slaughtered in India, where cows are considered sacred. "India does not import leather and it is the largest exporter of leather in the world. So it seems highly unlikely that the Gap buys its leather from America, where the slaughterhouse practices are considered humane and legal, and send the leather to India, stitch up the jacket and send it back to America." The Gap stated that the jackets were purchased from apparel factories. "Apparel factories often source their leather from other countries," the Gap statement read. "We expect apparel factories to source leather from vendors that follow applicable laws and the industry's best practices, including the humane treatment of animals." Hynde said she'd support the PETA cause forever. "I'm always available to PETA, including posthumously," she said. "I've agreed that they can use my image in any way at all after I die to promote the cause." The Watchman Subject: Protest Update Date: March 12, 2000 This Sunday I went to Mt.Carmel in New Jerusalem Waco Texas to protest the building of the new church . As many of you know this church was founded on the Sabbath, which was on a Saturday September 18,1999. Most people in this world believe that the Sabbath is on Sunday and yet they are building this church on that day. So no matter which day you believe is the Sabbath you must declare this church to be an Abomination. Know this; According to the teachings of David Koresh it is: The Abomination That Maketh Desolate! Many of you have already seen the new video that was, in part, shot at the beginning of this Protest on November 28, 1999. In the video X A True Revelation I was attacked, by Clive Doyle who is a government agent posing as a follower of David Koresh. For telling people the truth of his crimes against God he had me arrested. They sent a helicopter gun ship and squad cars to take me into custody. Since then I have continued my protest on the days of my choosing. March 12th was the first 'Sunday I protested there since the attack by Clive Doyle and the builders. When I arrived outside the gate I was met by a visitor who asked about the reasons for my protest. Once I explained it to him he, like all other Christians, swore that he would in NO WAY support this sinful project. While speaking to him two trucks came from the building site just as they do in the video. Those that have seen the video know how violent these people are. Anyone with knowledge of this current government church project call The Phoenix Project can imagine what I expected. Since there were no videos there to protect me I thought that there would be trouble. The truck drove up to where I was and James Ritter [EMAIL PROTECTED] stepped out. This is the same man in the video that physically attacked me with Clive Doyle. Mr.Ritter extended his hand in peace and apologized for his behavior and for Clive's. He said that things just got out of hand. Yeah they got out of hand all right, and I got put in Jail! So, it seems that he has been told by his handlers that they are to use different tactics since this video has been released. This is a weak attempt to stop the truth, but the video shows them for who they are Members of the Bill Clinton Murderers of The Children of Waco. At about 5:00 that afternoon I was approached by Scott the watchman for their church. He had a passenger, white male in his mid twenties. He drove up next to me and pulled a Semi-automatic 9 mm pistol, waved it at me cocked the hammer and smiled. This is a crime! A clear assault! I called the police to report it. You will not believe what happened next. After giving the Waco police a report #00-15973 I was told that since the crime occurred outside of Waco I would have to report it to the McLennan County Sheriffs Department. This I did and was put in contact with Officer Keon. He is the cop that arrested me in the video. Officer Keon said that he was too busy to come out to my house to take a report! He was suppose to be here today, Teusday the 14th. When he didn't show up I called again. This time when he called back he said that I had NO RIGHT to be there and that he will arrest me if I protest there again! Also he stated that he would not take a report from me!! CNN, ABC spike reports after taping interviews with e-mail whistle-blower by Paul Sperry WASHINGTON -- CNN and ABC News have canceled plans to air interviews with a veteran White House computer manager who says that first lady Hillary Clinton's office was behind a scheme to hide more than a million e-mail messages from investigators, a source says. Sheryl Hall, a career federal worker who ran the White House's computer and phone systems from 1992 to 1999, taped interviews with both networks after making the explosive charges in court documents filed last month. After taping the segments about three weeks ago, "she still hasn't been on TV," said a source close to Hall. "She was assuming it would have aired by now and, when she got a follow-up phone call from someone (at one of the networks), she asked when it would be (aired)," said the source. "They said it (the story) was being quashed." Apparently both interviews are "being suppressed," said the source, who wished to remain anonymous. "Why have none of her interviews been aired?" The Hall confidant suspects White House pressure. Before the last election, the White House leaned on ABC producers to cancel a scheduled interview with former White House FBI agent Gary Aldrich, who charged, among other things, that the White House was hiring drug users over his and another agents' vetoes. Clinton aide George Stephanopoulos reportedly later boasted of having had the story "killed." Stephanopoulos now works for ABC News as a political commentator and occasional correspondent. Also, CNN news division chief Rick Kaplan is a close friend of the first lady and plays golf with the president. Kaplan worked for ABC at the time the Aldrich story was spiked. State Department spokesman Jamie Rubin, moreover, is married to CNN foreign correspondent Christianne Amanpour. Attempts to reach the networks for comment were unsuccessful. Calls to the White House were not returned. In U.S. District Court affidavits, Hall swears that the White House obstructed justice by covering up the fact that mainframe computers missed collecting e-mail messages coming into one White House server over a 27-month period between 1996 and 1998. By law, such documents must be archived in a way that can be searched to respond to subpoenas or Freedom of Information Act requests. The e-mails were sent to nearly 500 members of the executive office of the president, including both Clintons and their top aides. Hall, 50, says that many of the missing e-mails pertained to subpoenas issued in the Filegate, Chinagate and Monica Lewinsky perjury and obstruction cases under investigation by federal grand juries and three congressional committees. Former White House computer contractors have corroborated Hall's charges in sworn depositions. It concerned something I did after members of my community were fired upon and killed in the assault against us, February 28th 1993, by agents of the bureau of alcohol, tobacco and firearms. My statement made clear that I, after being fired upon myself, I likewise responded in an act of self-defense. I believe this was unavoidable given the position we were placed in. On the face of it, my making this statement might to some seem foolish! Indeed I myself felt a great degree of reluctance when the Spirit moved me to speak concerning it as the deposition itself showed. Nevertheless, I could not resist The Spirit that hitherto had guided us as a community. Perhaps I should say something about her. We refer to her as Wisdom. In the Hebrew she is known as Shekinah the Spirit of God. She's referred to as the Spirit of Truth. She is further known to those of our community as the heavenly mother. The female side of the Godhead. Proverbs 8 speaks expressly concerning her. Versus 22-56 highlights her nature and origin with God from everlasting at Mt. Carmel we became intimately connected with her to the point we were perceptive of her nuances by which we were made able to perceive the meanings and truth of the scriptures. This was particularly in regard to the matters concerning the book sealed with Seven Seals spoken of in the book of Revelation. Without her we would not be who we are. Being led by her we are not always cognitive of the end design of her leading. Nevertheless, over time we had come to trust her. Walking by faith with her in a relationship of mutual trust. There were times the prospects of following her lead seemed not to our immediate liking and we sometimes resisted. This was true of David Koresh too through whom she had brought much truth to our attention. Nevertheless, we know in our hearts the righteousness of her counsel and came to trust her though sometimes hesitantly. In a way it was like when as a child your mother asked of you something not to your liking. You end up complying though not cheerily. Proverbs 1:20-33 again captures something of her personage. She is known to us- a very real presence. Christ made reference to her in her context as Wisdom and her children in Mt, 11:16-19, note verse 19. Growing to know and trust her guidance was something that happened over time and experiences with her. She became our law and governance, known to us as the Law of the Spirit. How does all of this relate to the matters at hand? Well, it was by her that the Mt. Carmel Community came into being. It was by her that David Koresh was made able to reveal the book seal sealed with Seven Seals. It was via her workings we sought to prevent what eventually occurred on February 28th through April 19th 1993. When this effort failed it was by her we were able to mount a defense. During the negotiations it was by her that David was directed. By her he was informed of God to "wait" and subsequently to write down the matters he did in the closing days before he was killed. In the aftermath and up to today we have continued to trust her lead. It was by her I was prompted to make the statement in the deposition reluctant though I was on account of my distrust of the system. It is by her that I now write this paper. What started the stir was a news article containing my statement written by Dick J Reavis, a journalist with The San Antonio Express News. In his article he draws attention to certain matters that have a bearing on the credibility of the government and its system of "justice". In effect, he shows it not to be true, but in fact a lie posing as truth. You will appreciate that in my deposition my statement was accepted unequivocally as being true. The police should finally be put on notice that they are not immune to the laws that the rest of us must follow. I have noted in the past that an attitude of "they are all guilty" that permeates the police forces across the country, justifies in THEIR minds (NOTE: SOME police fall in this category, I am NOT indicting all of them) the excessive force and lethality they use. Since then I have continued my protest on the days of my choosing. March 12th was the first 'Sunday" I protested there since the attack by Clive Doyle and the builders. When I arrived outside the gate I was met by a visitor who asked about the reasons for my protest. Once I explained it to him he, like all other Christians, swore that he would in NO WAY support this sinful project. While speaking to him two trucks came from the building site just as they do in the video. Those that have seen the video know how violent these people are. Anyone with knowledge of this current government church project call "The Phoenix Project" can imagine what I expected. Since there were no videos there to protect me I thought that there would be trouble. The truck drove up to where I was and James Ritter [EMAIL PROTECTED] stepped out. This is the same man in the video that physically attacked me with Clive Doyle. Mr.Ritter extended his hand in peace and apologized for his behavior and for Clive's. He said that things just "got out of hand". Yeah they got out of hand all right, and I got put in Jail! So, it seems that he has been told by his "handlers that they are to use different tactics since this video has been released. This is a weak attempt to stop the truth, but the video shows them for who they are "Members of the Bill Clinton Murderers of The Children of Waco". At about 5:00 that afternoon I was approached by "Scott" the watchman for their "church". He had a passenger, white male in his mid twenties. He drove up next to me and pulled a Semi-automatic 9 mm pistol, waved it at me cocked the hammer and smiled. This is a crime! A clear assault! I called the police to report it. You will not believe what happened next. After giving the Waco police a report #00-15973 I was told that since the crime occurred outside of Waco I would have to report it to the McLennan County Sheriffs Department. This I did and was put in contact with Officer Keon. He is the cop that arrested me in the video. Officer Keon said that he was too busy to come out to my house to take a report! He was suppose to be here today, Teusday the 14th. When he didn't show up I called again. This time when he called back he said that I had NO RIGHT to be there and that he will arrest me if I protest there again! Also he stated that he would not take a report from me!! Traditional weather forecasting focuses on the Earth's oceans and atmosphere. More recently, links have been found between the solar wind - the rain of charged particles from the Sun - and the Earth's climate. Now scientists are working on the ultimate weather forecast that will include the influence of the passage of the Earth through vast clouds of interstellar dust, said Dr Lotfi Jaffel of the Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris. The Earth had been in a relatively quiet region for the past 200,000 years that had not altered our climate significantly. But Dr Jaffel said there was a chance the Solar System would cross dense clouds, raising the prospect that more interstellar charged particles would bombard Earth to alter the climate, for instance by causing ozone depletion and cloud formation. Our Solar System is speeding through a dilute interstellar cloud at Mach 2 to create a shock wave, called the interstellar bow shock, which has now been detected for the first time by Dr Jaffel and colleagues, they report in the Astrophysical Journal. The supporters of the charter, who include Mikhail Gorbachev, the former Soviet President, and Ruud Lubbers, the former Dutch Prime Minister, said that the charter's 16 principles reflected a global demand for moral and ethical values in business and public affairs. The Earth Charter will be presented to the United Nations, governments, businesses, schools and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) as the basis for new laws and codes of conduct. "We need a moral and ethical recovery, not just an economic recovery," Maurice Strong, the co-chairman of the Earth Charter Commission, said. The activists said that many of the principles of the charter had already been adopted by NGOs and used to put pressure on corporations. Mr Lubbers said that company directors were beginning to understand the need to change and to adopt new principles. He noted how Shell responded to criticism of its plan to sink the Brent Spar oil storage buoyand how Nike, the American sportswear manufacturer, was criticised for allegedly using child labour in its Asian shoe factories. Mr Strong said groups including the World Federation of Engineering Associations and the World Tourism and Travel Council had added the Earth Charter to their policies. The principles of the Earth Charter are broadly worded guidelines such as "respect Earth and life in all its diversity" and "build democratic societies that are just, sustainable, participatory and peaceful". "The Earth Charter is a vehicle for changing the mentality of generations to come," said Alexander Likhotal who represented Mr Gorbachev at the meeting. STRATFOR.COM Global Intelligence Update 15 March 2000 Putin's Friendly Face Will Not Last Summary Acting Russian President Vladimir Putin has made a number of conciliatory statements toward the West over the past few weeks. In doing this, Putin not only strengthens his already ironclad election campaign, but also establishes himself as someone with whom the West can do business. This will not change facts on the ground. The West has no desire to assist Russia unless it agrees to conditions that Putin would never accept. The West will refuse to make any economic or political concessions to Russia, and as a result Putin and the Russian leadership will become more vitriolic than ever. Analysis The Times of India reported March 13 that Putin suspended the transfer of sensitive military technology to China. If true, this apparently pro-Western move marks another step in acting Russian President Vladimir Putin's tightrope walk between seeking a less acidic relationship with the West and catering to Russian nationalist passions. For the next few months Putin will lean increasingly toward an open rapprochement, knowing full well that his attempts will fail. But in failing, he will establish in Western and Russian eyes the need for a powerful - and by necessity ruthless - leader in Moscow. Putin's past actions show he is willing to wield a political stick both at home and abroad in his efforts to establish Russia as a strong state with a strong regime. The war in Chechnya - atrocities and all - vividly demonstrates the lengths to which he will go. His use of less than polite methods of diplomacy in bringing Georgia and Ukraine to heel grant a glimpse into what he may one day be willing to do to increase Russian influence over other areas of the former Soviet world. His March 11 meeting with U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair was all sunshine and compliments. On March 13 the Times of India - the paper of choice for KGB leaks during the Cold War - cited a report that Putin had suspended the transfer of sensitive military technology to China. If true, it would be a policy shift that would be sure to please the United States. As part of a carefully calculated strategy, the carrot has supplanted the stick. This kinder, gentler face serves a number of purposes. First, it provides an olive leaf to Russia's battered liberals and reformers. The largely pro-Western liberals were soundly trounced in Russia's Dec. 19 parliamentary elections and participated in the boycott of the Duma to protest Putin's embracing of the Communists. Making pro-Western statements could lure liberals into supporting Putin's presidential bid in the March 26 elections. Putin is already expected to garner more than 50 percent of the votes and thus handily defeat the other 11 candidates without need for a second round of voting; with liberal support, Putin would win a commanding mandate to boot. This would strengthen Putin's standing both at home and abroad. Putin's statements target an international audience as well. Russia cannot support its current budget without a new source of funding. First Deputy Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov is appealing to Western governments and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to agree to both debt forgiveness and new loans. Tabb WILLIAM K. TABB is professor of economics and political science at Queens College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. The "Seattle Shock" - as Business Week called it in an editorial that warned of a popular backlash against "our very economic system" - reflects heartfelt indignation by the financial press at the intrusion of mass democracy into an elite discourse. In the New York Times, columnist Thomas Friedman raged at anti-World Trade Organization (WTO) protesters, whom he presents as "flat-earth advocates" duped by knaves like Pat Buchanan. Friedman, perhaps the most obtuse of the big-time columnists, complains that "What's crazy is that the protesters want the W.T.O. to become precisely what they accuse it of already being - a global government. They want it to set more rules - their rules, which would impose our labor and environmental standards on everyone else." #1 It is beyond Friedman's understanding that the demonstrators want to democratize what has been an elite decision-making process, to challenge the global dominance of capital and capital's state institutions. The demonstrators know, and Friedman is outraged that others seem to agree, that there are choices other than the global governance by corporate capital. Most of the demonstrators, as the establishment press well understood, had the sort of class analysis which working people intuitively, if inchoately, often have. They have had enough of being told that globalization is good and that they should just shut up. Friedman was also clueless concerning the predominant politics. Few of the demonstrators supported the sort of negative nationalism Buchanan symbolizes, with its xenophobic and racist overtones. Rather what the Friedmans of the world are afraid of is the solidarity and internationalism of the movement, which prefigures a global movement from below - threatening, as Business Week points out, to rock the system. And if self-interest is not absent from the demands of trade unionists and others, it rarely is or should be. The proposals for confronting transnational capital are in class terms and, for the most part, inclusive. What is to be done after Seattle is a question many people, including but not only activists, now confront. It is the one we take up here, in the context of an analysis of both the corporate media's response to the demonstrations in Seattle and the real issues of class power relations. It is an analysis which focuses on corporate control of policy making, addressing policies which weaken unions and diminish the lives and agency of working people, reduce the sphere of public service provision, and pit one community of workers against another. To this basic class analysis, environmentalists have added a powerful critique of corporate greed and of the single-minded pursuit of accumulation which threatens the planet and all living things. A potentially powerful antisystemic movement is at an important point in its development. It is to be expected that the "irrationality" of the demonstrators is woven through much of the commentary of the financial press. Typically, it appears with a tone of offended outrage by the transnational ruling class and its ideological flacks. Hot-tempered acting-out has suddenly replaced the usual temperate condescension to which we have grown accustomed in this dismal era of corporate triumphalism. Thus George Melloan, in an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal, writes: "Given the virulence of their protests against the achievements of private capitalism, one can only assume that finally we have assembled in one place a representative collection of people who `can't stand prosperity.'"#2 This theme - "you have never had it so good, and that it is private capitalism which has done all this for you" - is a view of globalization which is rejected by most Americans. In a Pew Research Center nationwide survey conducted in April 1999, 43 percent of respondents said that in the future a global economy would help average Americans; 52 percent said it would hurt them. Support for globalization was strong only in high-income brackets. Among the majority of American families (those with incomes under fifty thousand dollars a year), a positive view of globalization was held by just 37 percent. Such differences are based on life experience.
