More Lawmakers Used Access to IPOs
To Make Quick Profits, Filings Show

By TOM HAMBURGER and KATE KELLY
Staff Reporters of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

WASHINGTON -- Several senators and House members last year took advantage
of
the tail end of the stock market's boom in initial public offerings, making
quick and lucrative profits that average investors can't get.

Congressional offices in the House and Senate on Thursday released annual
financial disclosure forms, which include lawmakers' IPO investments. In
past years, these investments have prompted controversy, because the stocks
frequently rise quickly above their offering prices. Underwriters and
brokerage houses restrict access to IPOs, doling them out to large
investment companies, big investors and other favored clients, including
celebrities and prominent individuals.

Some 452 companies went public in 2000, raising a record $80.6 billion,
despite the market plunge during the latter part of 2000. By comparison,
547
IPOs in 1999 raised much less, $68.8 billion.

In past years, only a handful of congressional members reported flipping
IPOs -- quickly selling shares soon after the offering occurs. An initial
analysis this year suggests a different story, though it is difficult to
conclude exactly how many lawmakers profited from IPOs, because members
aren't required to disclose which of their stocks are IPOs. So spotting
them
requires matching purchase dates on members' disclosure forms with publicly
available IPO listings.

Aides to all congressional IPO investors interviewed Thursday denied they
received favored treatment. Several legislators are major investors who
might have received access to lucrative stocks even if they weren't elected
officials.

Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer of California and her husband, for example,
have numerous investments and frequently buy and trade stocks, including
five IPOs last year that produced profits that appear to be in the
thousands. (Members are required to report the asset values and profits in
broad ranges only.)

Among the IPOs was Avenue A Inc., a Seattle-based online marketing
consultant. Sen. Boxer reported buying between $2,002 and $30,000 of the
stock on its opening day, Feb. 28, when the offering price was $24. She
sold
shares of the stock the next day; the stock closed that day at $72 a share.

Not all of her IPOs yielded gains. She held Sonus Networks Inc. stock for
one day; that stock closed at 27% below its opening price on its second
day.

"All of her investments were handled by a family investment adviser" who
doesn't consult the senator when trading stocks, said David Sandretti, a
Boxer spokesman. Sen. Boxer's San Francisco-based investment adviser, Gail
Seneca, said her firm distributes IPOs equitably among its clients, and
that
the senator received no special treatment.

GOP Sen. Judd Gregg of New Hampshire reported buying and selling between
$1,001 and $15,000 of stock in Palm Pilot maker Palm Inc. on March 2. The
offering price was $38, and the closing price that day was $95.06 -- a 150%
increase. A spokesman said "a negligible amount" of the stock was offered
to
him by his regular broker at Morgan Stanley, one of the firms that oversaw
the Palm IPO.

"He received a call from his regular broker just as the broker called many
of his other customers," the spokesman said.

California Republican Rep. Howard McKeon purchased less than $1,000 of
stock
in Avanex Corp., a Fremont, Calif., producer of fiber-optic equipment. "He
had given instructions to his broker ... to purchase an IPO" when a good
one
came along, said his chief of staff, Bob Cochran. The offering price was
$36
on Feb. 3. When he sold it less than a week later, its closing price had
risen 383% to $174.

Mr. Cochran said the congressman received no special treatment.

Rep. Robin Hayes (R., N.C.) invested a total of between $2,002 and $30,000
in two of last year's hottest IPOs: the U.S. debut of Chinese
telecommunications company China Unicom Ltd., which was the year's
sixth-biggest deal in capital raised; and the Japanese Internet services
provider, Crayfish Co. Both deals were underwritten by Morgan Stanley, Rep.
Hayes's broker.

China Unicom's stock price rose a respectable 23% between its opening in
June and when the congressman sold several weeks later. But his one-day
purchase and sale of Crayfish was much more lucrative. The stock rose a
huge
414% in its first day of trading.

An aide said Rep. Hayes's broker made the buy and sell decisions on both
without calling him. "He gave broad instructions to his broker to get
involved in the tech market and gave him the discretion to make things
happen," said Hayes aide Andrew Duke.

As Honeywell Deal Goes Awry For GE, Fallout May Be Global

By MATT MURRAY, PHILIP SHISHKIN, BOB DAVIS and ANITA RAGHAVAN
Staff Reporters
THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

When John F. Welch Jr. snatched Honeywell International Inc. from the
arms of United Technologies Corp. at the last minute last fall, it was the
crowning coup of his 40-year career.

"This is the most exciting day in the 118-year history of GE," the longtime
head of General Electric Co. exulted at an October news conference. It
seemed as though nothing could damp his buoyant mood, not even the prospect
of antitrust problems.

"This is the cleanest deal you'll ever see," said Mr. Welch, who postponed
his retirement to see the acquisition through. With a current value of $41
billion, it also was GE's largest ever, negotiated over a three-day
weekend, too fast for the company to even consult its outside antitrust
counsel or notify regulators.

"Every single activity, there is no product overlap," Mr. Welch said at
the time. "Everything is complementary. That's not a speech for the
antitrust people, that's fact."

Thursday, a humbled Mr. Welch and GE all but walked away from that deal,
after weeks of battling European antitrust regulators who kept insisting
that, au contraire, Europe had many reservations about the proposed merger
between the two U.S. companies. Clearly, Mr. Welch had miscalculated.

Facing a deadline, GE, as required, submitted a final offer of concessions
to the European Commission, the European Union's executive arm. But both
GE and European regulators said they remained far apart. Privately, the
negotiators were even more pessimistic about the deal's chances.
Read a statement from GE and Honeywell regarding their merger proposal
before the European Commission.

"This shows," the 65-year-old Mr. Welch said in a statement, that "you are
never too old to get surprised."

As Mr. Welch and his executives hopped the GE corporate jet to fly out of
Brussels, where they had spent much of the last week engaged in talks, it
was clear that more than the immediate future of their long-planned merger
was up in the air. If their deal dies, it would mark the first time that
European regulators have killed a merger between two American companies
that U.S. officials had approved. That would almost certainly chill
merger activity among other U.S. multinationals intent on expanding their
global reach.

What's more, it could exacerbate political tensions between the U.S. and a
more outspoken Europe at a time when the two sides, for all their ties,
seem to be headed on diverging paths on some cultural and economic issues.
The troubled negotiations underscored obvious and critical differences in
how the two trading partners view mergers. While the U.S., for example,
focuses more on whether a proposed merger lowers or raises prices for
consumers, the EU looks more closely at whether the deal undercuts
corporate competitors.

While there's still a small chance that the two sides could attempt to
broker a last-minute compromise, both GE and the European Commission
dismiss this as almost unattainable. GE's negotiators have made it
abundantly clear that they've put their best offer on the table and aren't
going to raise it anymore. And the commission is also sticking to its guns
and saying that GE's proposals fall far short of what's necessary to secure
approval.

A senior commission official said Thursday night that the Merger Task Force
charged with leading the investigation wasn't even planning to start an
official consultation process on GE's latest offer -- a sign that the deal
is headed for collapse unless the commission suddenly changes its mind.

In one of the possible scenarios, GE and Honeywell could withdraw their
application, in which case the commission won't have to issue a formal
decision on the deal. Theoretically, it could open the doo

Twelve Months in the Life of Marijuana Prohibition
The Year In Pot
by Kevin Nelson
ne of the problems that the marijuana reform movement consistently faces
is that everyone wants to talk about what marijuana does, but no one
ever wants to look at what marijuana prohibition does. Marijuana never
kicks down your door in the middle of the night. Marijuana never locks
up sick and dying people, does not suppress medical research, does not
peek in bedroom windows. Even if one takes every reefer madness
allegation of the prohibitionists at face value, marijuana prohibition
has done far more harm to far more people than marijuana ever could. ?

Boxer has stock in energy firms

An annual report of California Sen. Barbara Boxer's finances released
Thursday shows that she and her husband own shares in two energy
companies that are key players in California's energy crisis.

Boxer, a Democrat, said she leaves investment decisions to a
professional but has nonetheless given the order to sell those stocks.

Boxer's holdings, with her husband, Stewart, include up to $100,000 in
El Paso Corp. stock. The firm is the subject of an inquiry into
whether it used control of a natural gas pipeline to drive up prices
last year.

She also owns stock in Mirant, a power wholesaler formerly known as
Southern Energy.

The Boxers also owned stock in Diamond Offshore Drilling of Houston and
Halliburton, an oil services company.

Vice President Dick Cheney served as Halliburton's chief executive until
he became the Republican nominee last year.

I think the pendulum of talk about slavery swings to easily back and forth between
black and non-black races. It would be better perhaps to focus on the institution
itself, whereas it is the exploitation of people and the denial of human rights and
values. Who is being enslaved is secondary to the issue of slavery and arguing over
the extent of black (African) slavery as compared to other races is counterproductive
to the essential inhumanity of the act, no matter the races involved.

Re: [CTRL] Religion & The Brain

2001-06-19 Thread tenebroust

-Caveat Lector-

I'd have to agree that there is no way that such a thing as numinous experience can be
proven objectively, but would also agree that if it does exist (and I don't rule it
out completely) it would exist alongside of the non-spiritual world, for it would have
to.

[CTRL] NYT: Roger Clinton Again Is Focus of Allegations

Roger Clinton Again Is Focus of Allegations

By ALISON LEIGH COWAN
The New York Times

On the morning of Aug. 10, 1998, a Texas entrepreneur walked into an
Embassy Suites Hotel in Dallas and was escorted into a meeting with Roger
Clinton and two business associates. The men wasted no time on small talk.

"The first question that they asked was if I had brought the $30,000 in
cash," the Texan, Richard Cayce, has told prosecutors, adding that he
promptly turned over the stack of bills. "I don't remember if they counted
it or not."

Mr. Cayce, who is seeking immunity from prosecution, has told federal
investigators that Mr. Clinton and his associates promised to provide him
with two diplomatic passports, which are normally issued exclusively to
people working for the government and can speed passage through customs. He
said that the three also assured him that arrangements were on track for a
separate deal - a presidential pardon for an acquaintance facing a prison
sentence.

Mr. Cayce has provided federal investigators with a written account of the
meeting. A copy of that statement, known as a proffer, was obtained by The
New York Times.

Mr. Cayce's assertions are a potentially important turn in a federal
investigation of Roger Clinton that began after Bill Clinton, his half
brother, granted 141 pardons in his last day as president.

Lawyers for Roger Clinton and the other two men deny that their clients
ever discussed pardons with Mr. Cayce. The meeting in Dallas, they said,
was for a different purpose. The lawyers said that Mr. Cayce had hoped to
recruit Roger Clinton as a spokesman for a charity he was setting up. They
acknowledged that $30,000 changed hands that day, but said the payment was
for their business advice and time, not diplomatic passports.

Neither the passports nor the pardon for Mr. Cayce's acquaintance, Garland
Lincecum, ever materialized. Mr. Lincecum went to federal prosecutors in
March, complaining that his family had paid more than $200,000 in late 1998
to Dickey Morton and George Locke, Roger Clinton's associate, for a pardon
that Mr. Clinton was to have arranged.

Mr. Lincecum, who had been convicted in a swindle and sentenced to a
seven-year term, reported to prison on April 15, 1999. On several occasions
in the months that followed, his friends and relatives said in interviews,
they confronted Roger Clinton's two associates about the progress of the
pardon and were told that it was delayed but coming.

In his statement to prosecutors, Mr. Cayce said that he, too, confronted
the two men in Roger Clinton's presence and was told by them that he could
"take it to the bank" that the pardon was coming.

Roger Clinton's lawyer, Bart H. Williams, said that his client had spoken
with Mr. Locke and Mr. Morton about importing building materials and other
business topics and had accepted $35,000 in 1998 in "appearance fees" from
their company, C.L.M., including his third of the $30,000 that changed
hands in the hotel room.

Mr. Morton, a former University of Arkansas football star who established
the company, has testified in an unrelated civil case in Arkansas that the
initials C.L.M. stood for Clinton, Locke and Morton. Roger Clinton's lawyer
said his client only recently learned of the company's existence and had no
role in its operations. The company is now defunct.

The investigation of Roger Clinton appears to have expanded in recent
months beyond the accusation of selling pardons to an examination of other
deals in which Roger Clinton might have traded on his brother's name, said
lawyers in the case.

"Roger Clinton has tried to be careful to assure that his business dealings
are legitimate," Mr. Williams said. "It is very difficult for me to believe
that anyone would reasonably think that Roger Clinton controlled either his
brother or anyone else in that administration."

But people who had business dealings with Roger Clinton said they believed
his relationship to the president would guarantee success. At the meeting
at the Dallas hotel, Mr. Cayce said he was assured by those present that
"Bill Clinton would do whatever Rodger Clinton wanted him to." (The proffer
consistently misspells Roger Clinton's name.)

The investigation is being directed by the office of Mary Jo White, the
federal prosecutor in Manhattan, who is investigating all the last- minute
pardons, because the most notable, that of the former fugitive commodities
trader Marc Rich, involved a case that originated in her jurisdiction.

Nothing in any of these accounts suggests that former President Clinton had
any knowledge of the various plans, and his spokeswoman, Julia Payne,
reiterated on Friday that "the president has been very clear he's granted
pardons and clemencies only on the merits."

Roger Clinton is expected to assert his Fifth Amendment right against
forced sel

Do you recognize these tactics?
War Chest of Techniques For the Sole Purpose of Psychological
Manipulation
of Individuals, committees, and groups as well as the public.

This has been developed by Government/Educational Agencies:

-Definitions critical to understanding the PROCESS

1) Delphi Technique: Opposition is made to look dogmatic, unreasonable,
inarticulate, and unknowledgeable. (If you don't like the message shoot
the
messenger. Character assassination a must when unable to defend position
via
the scientific method.)

2) Crisis Intervention: Create a crisis, artificial or real, and then
come
in with your own solution.

3) Consensus/group thought: Must think alike in order to be part of the
group.

4) Dialectics: Forced conflict in order to force compromise/ ever
evolving
toward ultimate goal.

5) Position of POWER: Gives control of information dissemination,
ultimate
power of selecting who is and who is not placed on any given committees-
control this and the outcome is a given.

6.) Develop Stakeholders: Those who have a stake in making it happen.
Stakeholders are reached by appealing to their pocketbooks, (money
talks) by
recognition, by power, by a feeling of goodwill, and Last by one's
ideology/world view.

7) Develop special people to become change agents- people who are fully
trained in all aspects of psychological warfare.

Minor Points:

1) Mix a little truth into a lie, and tell the lie often enough and the
public will believe it.

2) Bombard and overwhelm the public with information

3) Well constructed surveys will prove anything one wants to prove

4) Befriend the opposition to pick up clues in how to plan strategies in
dealing with the opposition.

5) Frame the issues or put the spin on information in such a way as to
appeal to as many people as possible.

6) Orwellian Doublespeak: Choose words that mean one thing to one person
and
something quite different to someone else: example: Educational
Standards-
to most parents this means academic standards, to big business
especially
international business as in global economy this means job training/ job
skill standards, a cheap and compliant workforce to compete in the
global
economy and to those who believe in the nanny state government it means
standards for reshaping, remolding good little politically correct
Children.

7) Clintonian/ Orwellian Doublespeak: Example- A tax increase is not
really
a tax hike, but is an increased contribution to the government to the
village for the betterment of society, combine Delphi and define anyone
who
is opposed to the increased contribution as greedy scrooges. Or , "It
takes
a village to raise a child"- what that really means it takes the
Government,
or the Nanny State Government to raise a child. Parents you are
basically
obsolete, Parents bear in mind here, only the village idiot would let
the
entire village in on the task of raising their children.

8) Marathon Meetings/ Long Meetings: designed to wear people down,
people
more likely to go along with flow in order to bring things to a close.

--Communist Rules For Revolution

-(Captured at Dusseldorf In May 1919 by Allied Forces)

1. Corrupt the Young: get them away from religion. Get them interested
in
sex. Make them superficial: destroy their ruggedness.

2. by specious argument cause the breakdown of old moral virtues:
honesty,
sobriety, continence, faith in the pledged word, ruggedness.
(examples-values clarification, situational ethics and narcissistic and
hedonistic entertainment)

3. Encourage civil disorders and foster a lenient and soft attitude on
the
part government toward such disorders. (L. A. riots were just a
coincidence?... of course!)

4. Divide the people into hostile groups by constantly harping on
controversial matters of no importance. (Racial differences?)

5. Get people's minds off their government by focusing their attention
on
athletics, sexy books, plays and other trivialities.

6. Get control of all means of publicity. (Media)

7. Destroy the people's faith in their natural leaders by holding the
latter
up to contempt, ridicule and obloquy (disgrace)

8. Cause the registration of all firearms on some pretext, with a view
to
confiscation and leaving the population helpless.

Final Rules:

1. Rewrite the history books, first by omission

[CTRL] Taiwan Test-firing U.S. Missiles

2001-06-19 Thread Bill Richer

-Caveat Lector-

WJPBR Email News List [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Peace at any cost is a Prelude to War!

Taiwan Test-firing U.S. Missiles
NewsMax.com Wires
Tuesday, June 19, 2001
TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan will test-fire U.S.-made Patriot missiles on
Wednesday as China conducts major war games across the Taiwan Strait, Japan's
Kyodo news agency reported Tuesday.
Authorities in Taipei refused to disclose when they plan to fire the missiles
but Taiwanese newspapers said the tests could be conducted as early as
Wednesday, reports said.

Officials said previously that they plan to do the test sometime this month
but did not give a date.

However, the military has warned civilian aircraft and fishing boats to stay
away from the southeastern coast in the mornings of Wednesday through Friday
for live-fire drills, the Kyodo report said.

Quoting newspapers in Taipei, the report said a missile battalion was
stationed in the southern Pingtung base getting ready to fire the Patriot
missiles.

The tests coincide with China's war games off the southeastern coastal
province of Fujian, facing Taiwan. The exercises include a simulated attack
on a Taiwanese island.

Taiwan acquired 200 Patriot missiles, an improved version of the original
missile used in the 1991 Persian Gulf War. They have been deployed around
Taipei, the capital but have not yet been tested.

Washington has repeatedly said it is committed to selling Taiwan weapons
needed for its defenses.

China considers Taiwan a breakaway province that must be reunited with the
mainland, by force if necessary. Taiwan has sought to build up its missile
defense, arguing that China may have as many as 800 missiles pointed at the
island within the next decade.

You left out the Arabs who filled all three roles in the capture,

Lockerbie was a cover-up for US foreign policy. It diverted the guilt
from the perpetrators - The Palestinian PFLP-GC, and their partners,
Syrian intelligence, and shifted it to the Libyans.

Yemen Arrests Nine in Plot Against U.S.
NewsMax.com Wires
Tuesday, June 19, 2001
WASHINGTON -- Authorities in Yemen have arrested nine suspected terrorists
for allegedly plotting an attack against U.S. investigators who were
investigating last fall's suicide bombing of the USS Cole, The Washington
Post reported Tuesday.
The newspaper cited a senior U.S. official as saying the men were believed to
be affiliated with the Islamic Army of Aden, a fundamentalist group linked to
Saudi extremist Osama bin Laden. The official said the men were found with
hand grenades, small arms and documents, including a map of the U.S. Embassy
in Sanaa, the capital, that indicated they were planning to attack Americans
in Yemen.

"There is a very real and credible threat specifically against those
investigating the Cole bombing," FBI spokesman John Collingwood said. "Based
upon what we know, we thought it prudent to remove our personnel rather than
endanger both investigators and those U.S. officials around them."

Kenneth Katzman, a Middle East analyst and terrorism expert at the
Congressional Research Service, told The Post that whatever the group's links
to bin Laden, it is clearly a "homegrown" offshoot of a radical Islamicist
movement that has existed in Yemen for years.

Meanwhile, CNN reported the U.S. Embassy in Yemen was a terrorist target in
recent days and came close to being attacked.

"We narrowly dodged a serious attack," said an official. He described the
threat as "imminent, specific and credible."

U.S. agents from the FBI and the Navy Criminal Investigative Service had been
in Yemen since suicide bombers in a small boat pulled alongside the USS Cole
in October as it refueled in the Yemeni port of Aden and detonated a massive
bomb, killing 17 sailors and wounding 39 others aboard the destroyer.

U.S. investigators have been trying to determine whether bin Laden is linked
in any way to the Cole bombing but have yet to announce a definitive
relationship. Bin Laden, a fugitive in the mountains of Afghanistan, has been
indicted in New York for orchestrating the August 1998 bombings of two U.S.
embassies in East Africa.

Naval officer warns of attack
Daly says nuclear sub, carrier bases vulnerable

--

The United States is vulnerable to an attack against its nuclear submarine
and aircraft carrier bases, due to lax measures adopted since the collapse of
the Soviet Union, according to a U.S. Naval officer wounded in a 1997 Russian
laser attack.

U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Jack Daly

Lt. Cmdr. Jack Daly stated that Russian intelligence-gathering ships are
“allowed free entry into our ports,” and are allowed into “close proximity
to our [U.S. Navy] ships.” Naval Intelligence assertions that such Russian
activity is “militarily insignificant,” Daly declared, “reek of the mindset
and the mistakes made prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor.”

Daly denies that the Cold War is over, and stated that “as far as I’m
concerned … the Cold War never ended, it just thawed out a little bit,” and
added that since the arrival of ex-KGB operative Vladimir Putin as Russian
president, “the chill is coming back.”

He made the statements during an interview on Saturday's Judicial Watch radio
broadcast. Judicial Watch is a public-interest watchdog group.

Regarding the Pearl Harbor attack, Daly stated, “we had intelligence
(concerning the attack), the intelligence was dismissed, it was ignored; I
feel as frustrated as some of the intelligence officers who alerted the
Command [at Pearl Harbor] that there was going to be an attack."

Daly singled out the situation of the Navy bases at Bremerton and Everett
bases on Puget Sound near Seattle, Wash.

Since 1992, according to Daly, Russian spy ships -- although known to Navy
intelligence -- have been allowed to sail freely into U.S. territorial waters
and then through to Puget Sound, the home to vital Navy aircraft carrier and
submarine bases.

Because the waters in the area can be exceptionally narrow -- less than two
miles in width at some points -- Daly refers to the area as a “choke point”
for Navy shipping. Daly cited the attack on the USS Cole in Yemen earlier
this year, which cost the lives of 17 Navy crewmen, as an example of how an
attack could be carried out against Navy ships in Puget Sound.

Daly speaks from experience. On April 4, 1997, while doing reconnaissance
over the Russian intelligence ship Kapitan Man, Daly was attacked with a
laser from the ship and received permanent eye injury -- including possibly
eventual total blindness.

Navy Intelligence assigned Daly the reconnaissance mission; Daly’s pilot,
Canadian Air Force Captain Patrick Barnes, was similarly wounded.

The incident occurred five miles from Port Angels, in the Strait of Juan de
Fuca, the body of water leading to several U.S. Navy bases, as well as to
Victoria, Canada, and Seattle. The Kapitan Man had already come to within
1,000 yards of the nuclear-missile-armed U.S.S. Ohio.

Daly states that the Clinton administration did nothing either to assist him
with his injury, nor to punish those aboard the Russian ship. The Kapitan Man
was given a 24-hour notice before it was boarded, and predictably, no laser
devices were found upon the tardy inspection.

Since the incident, the Navy has failed to acknowledge his injury.

According to the press statement on Daly’s website, despite attempts to
intervene on his behalf by a number of members of Congress, including Sens.
Jesse Helms, R-N.C., and Bob Smith, R-N.H., his claims have met with
“constant stonewalling by the Navy.”

As a result, Daly turned to Judicial Watch, which filed a lawsuit on his
behalf against the Russian-owned shipping company FESCO, the U.S. branch of
the Far Eastern Shipping Co., based in Vladivostok, Russia. A copy of the
lawsuit is available on Daly’s website.

Daly stated, however, that his “chief concern” in the suit was not for
himself, but for “the security of the United States.”

The suit was filed on Wednesday, June 13, three days before U.S. President
George W. Bush was to meet Putin.

In the press statement, Daly cites “a clear and present danger to our Navy
and our nation” in the unregulated activities of Russian ships within the
U.S. and close to Navy bases.

Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, stated that the suit filing was
timed to coincide with the Bush-Putin summit, near Ljubljana, the capital of
Slovenia, in hopes that Bush would address the issues of national concern
raised by Daly.

“It is my fervent hope that President Bush will stand up for one of his
citizens and military officers and not allow this betrayal to continue,” Daly
wrote.

No report thus far indicates that Bush has broached any of Daly’s security
concerns with Putin.

Americans Blamed in Colombia Attack

by Karl Penhaul, Chronicle Foreign Service
San Francisco Chronicle

BOGOTA -- Three American civilian airmen providing airborne security for a
U.S. oil company coordinated an anti-guerrilla raid in Colombia in 1998,
marking targets and directing helicopter gunships that mistakenly killed 18
civilians, Colombian military pilots have alleged in a official inquiry.

The air attack on the village of Santo Domingo in oil-rich northeast Arauca
province took place on Dec. 13 of that year amid efforts to hunt down a 200-
strong column of the leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
Survivors said the aircraft attacked them as they ran out of their homes to
a nearby road with their hands in the air to show they were noncombatants.

Here is an example of how U.S. aid is involved in human rights abuses.

Robin Kirk
Human Rights Watch

The raid caused some of the worst "collateral damage" inflicted on civilians
by the armed forces in the recent history of Colombia's 37-year conflict.
Shortly after the incident, President Andres Pastrana criticized the
military's actions, saying that security forces "cannot respond to barbarism
with barbarism."

The alleged role of the U.S. airmen -- emerging only now -- has raised fresh
questions about American involvement in a war that is increasingly being
outsourced to private companies not accountable to the U.S. Congress.

According to the State Department, about 300 U.S. civilians are in Colombia,
most of whom work on contracts ostensibly linked to anti-drug efforts, which
Washington has funded with more than $1 billion as part of the Pastrana
government's "Plan Colombia." Some have even piloted helicopters in raids on
drug plantations and installations in southern Colombia.

The pilots in the Santo Domingo incident were providing security for Los
Angeles-based Occidental Petroleum Corp., which operates the nearby Cano
Limon oil field, Colombia's second largest.

Investigators at the Colombian prosecutor general's office have asked the U.
S. Embassy in Bogota to help obtain information from the American airmen
involved in the attack, who worked for a private Rockledge, Fla.-based air
surveillance contractor called AirScan International Inc.

Embassy officials issued a terse statement Wednesday saying that the airmen
were not contract employees of the U.S. government and that the embassy did
not help oil companies solve their security issues.

Although it occurred 2 1/2 years ago, the Santo Domingo attack is becoming a
cause celebre for human rights organizations protesting creeping U.S.
involvement in Colombia's guerrilla war.

They say the fact that U.S.-donated helicopters dropped cluster bombs and
rockets on Santo Domingo is a disturbing demonstration of how the Colombian
military has sometimes used U.S. aid that in theory is earmarked only for
anti- narcotics operations.

"Here is an example of how U.S. aid is involved in human rights abuses,"
said Robin Kirk, senior researcher for the New York-based group Human Rights
Watch.

"This is really the first test case of how the U.S. government is going to
abide by its own human rights laws," Kirk said, referring to the so-called
Leahy Law that restricts U.S. aid from being spent on counterinsurgency
operations.

Colombian Air Force pilot Cesar Romero told military judge Capt. Luz Monica
Ostos in testimony last month about the Santo Domingo attack: "The
coordination was done directly with the armored helicopters that were
supporting us and with the (Cessna 337) Skymaster plane flown by U.S.
pilots. The Skymaster and gunship crews talked directly to the ground
troops."

While Romero conceded that the U.S.-donated Vietnam-era Huey UH-1H
helicopter he piloted bombed a target marked by the Cessna, he said he had
no intention of causing civilian casualties.

If Romero and Jimenez are eventually accused of criminal action in the
deaths of innocent civilians, they could face up to 30 years in jail. It is
unlikely that the U.S. airmen will face any charges, analysts say.

The raid came a day after army intelligence sources and the Skymaster plane
detected rebel movements in the area.

Air force helicopters strafed Santo Domingo with machine-gun fire, air-to-
surface rockets and cluster bombs. Eighteen civilians were killed, including
nine children, but no guerrillas.

At the time, the Colombian armed forces and U.S. officials conceded that the
aircraft and almost all weaponry involved in the attack had been supplied
under a 1989 U.S. aid package that was exempt from current congressional
restrictions.

An inquiry was launched immediately after the incident, but final results
have been delayed by military and civilian courts arguing over jurisdiction.

In testimony to the military tribunal late last month, helicopter co-pilot
Lt. Johan Jimenez backed Romero's accounts of the role of the AirScan
spotter p

Lockerbie was an impossible verdict

http://www.guardian.co.uk/Archive/Article/0,4273,4206312,00.html

The conviction left a disturbing list of unanswered questions

Richard Norton-Taylor
Guardian

Tuesday June 19, 2001

On January 31, after an eight-month trial, three Scottish judges, sitting
in a special court at Camp Zeist in the Netherlands, found a Libyan
intelligence officer, Ali Al-Megrahi, guilty of the Lockerbie bombing -
Britain's biggest mass murder - acquitting his colleague, Khalifa Fhimah.

Two days earlier, senior Foreign Office officials briefed a group of
journalists in London. They painted a picture of a bright new chapter in
Britain's relations with Colonel Gadafy's regime. They made it quite clear
they assumed both the Libyans in the dock would be acquitted.

The FO officials were not alone. Most independent observers believed it
was impossible for the court to find the prosecution had proved its case
against Megrahi beyond reasonable doubt.

It was not only the lack of hard evidence - something the judges admitted
in their lengthy judgment. The case was entwined, if the judges were
right, in a sequence of remarkable coincidences.

Doubts about the prosecution's case and the judges' verdict are spelled
out in Cover-Up of Convenience, published this week. Two journalists, John
Ashton and Ian Ferguson, examine in detail what Paul Foot has already
succinctly written in Private Eye's special report, Lockerbie, The Flight
from Justice.

For more than a year, western intelligence agencies pointed to the Popular
Front for the Liberation of Palestine - General Command, led by Ahmed
Jibril. It is not hard to see why. Two months before the Lockerbie
disaster, German police arrested members of the PFLP-GC near Frankfurt
where, according to the prosecution, the bag containing the bomb was
placed on the Pan Am airliner.

Among those arrested was Marwan Khreesat, who was found with explosives
and a Toshiba cassette player similar to the one said to have contained
the bomb. Khreesat was released. It was later revealed he was a Jordanian
double agent.

The Jordanians did not allow him to appear as a witness at the trial.
Instead, he was interviewed by an FBI agent, Edward Marshman. Marshman
described how Khreesat told him how he infiltrated the PFLP-GC, how a
second Toshiba bomb had gone missing, and about his contacts with another
member of Jibril's group, Abu Elias, said to be an expert in airline
security.

Elias is mentioned in a report written by Mobdi Goben, another member of
the PFLP-GC, shortly before he died. The Goben memorandum claims Elias
planted the bomb in the luggage of Khalid Jaafar, a Lebanese American
passenger allegedly involved in a CIA-approved heroin-smuggling operation.
The luggage used for these operations, it is claimed, bypassed normal
security screening.

The prosecution asked a "foreign government", believed to be Syria, to
hand over information about Goben's allegations. Syria refused. Syria was
central to the original explanation. This was that the bombing was funded
by Iran in retaliation for the mistaken shooting down of an Iranian
airliner by an American warship, the USS Vincennes, over the Persian Gulf
in July 1988.

There is a widespread view that the US and Britain changed their tack when
they badly needed Syria's support, and Iran's quiescence, for the Gulf war
after the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990. They thus fingered the two
Libyans, insisting they placed the bomb in an unaccompanied bag at Malta's
Luqa airport, where it was transferred to the Pan Am plane at Frankfurt.
An earlier Palestinian suspect, Abu Talb, had also visited Malta. He was
later held in Sweden on terrorist charges and identified by the British as
a prime suspect.

You don't have to look for conspiracies - maybe Jaafar's presence on the
plane has an entirely innocent explanation - to question the prosecution's
version of events. US authorities issued a series of specific warnings
about a bomb threat before Lockerbie. These, and intelligence reports
implicating Iran, were dismissed as speculative or hoaxes.

The evidence of Tony Gauci, the Maltese shop owner was extremely shaky. He
was uncertain about dates and the weather that day. He told the police the
purchaser was "six foot or more" and over 50. Megrahi was five foot eight
inches and 37 at the time.

According to Ashton and Ferguson, replica MST-13 timers - implicating
Megrahi but only presented as evidence after a long delay - were
manufactured by the CIA but that information was not passed to the
defence. The evidence of Abdul Giaka, a Libyan who defected to the CIA and
star prosecution witness, was described by the judges as "at best
exaggerated, at worst simply untrue".

The judgment is littered with assumptions and criticisms of prosecution
witnesses. They refer to a "mass of conflicting evidence". Megrahi has
lodged an appeal. The Scottish appeal judges surely owe it to the victims'
families to explain the string

Re: [CTRL] SETI - ET II

2001-06-19 Thread John Miller

-Caveat Lector-

SETI – ET 2

In the “continuing mission” of hunt the label, “to explore strange new
worlds, to seek out new life and civilizations and label them,” I decided to
consider a Sci-Fi starships fuel capacity of antimatter of 3,000 cubic
metres. And this is stored in various pods (see Deck 42 on the Starship
Enterprise) and claimed was enough fuel for a three year mission. Now the
fuel in the form of anti-heavy hydrogen nuclei which I assume is transported
as rarefied plasma, leads me to think about hydrogen in its gaseous state.

And down here on planet Earth the volume required for just one pound of
hydrogen gas is 178.83 cubic feet.

Now what is interesting for me is that this volume can be extracted from the
fundamental hydrogen labels 109 and 17. Because 1.09e+13 x 3 the square
and cube root is 178.8235

Whereas 1,700,000 x 1,700,000 and /Pi x 20 squared twice x 10 the square
root thrice and cube root is 178.8393 and so the mean is 178.8314 and so is
therefore of the label for the volume for one pound of hydrogen.

And so to return to the King’s Chamber of the Great Pyramid I said was of
E.T.N.K. (ExtraTerrestrial of a Nasty Kind), and to the now partly broken
granite sarcophagus the reason for the chamber.

The sarcophagus, called the Coffer, has a volume of some 82.4869cu.ft which
was determined by Sir Flinders Petrie’s measurements of length 89.62 a width
of 38.5 and a height of 41.31 inches.

So it seems quite appropriate that I could imagine Nekhbet, the vulture
goddess of Upper Egypt (who also has her emblem alongside the cobra on the
headdress of the Pharaoh), standing by the Coffer, for she has the label 42.
And 42 x 3 feathers is 126 or 109 + 17 that of E.T.N.K.

And it is the ostrich which also has a 42 day incubation period, and so when
His Royal Highness Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, wears his own
headdress of three feathers he too carries the label 126, and this is also
the label for E.T.N.K.

Now 1.26e+12 and quartered then square and cube root is the volume of
the sarcophagus at 82.4869cu.ft. And we know that the vulture eats the dead
where they are.

OK, I stay with the Coffer, which has a volume for its frame of 40.8cu.ft.
or 2.4 lots of 17.

And the internal volume is 41.68684cu.ft. and when the internal volume is
multiplied by the volume for the frame, and squared x Pi it is equivalent to
64 lots of 142,000 the label for hydrogen. So thanks to the number 1420
megahertz, the 21cm wavelength for hydrogen, as used the SETI program, this
very label is written into the Coffer itself.

OK, and now to have an interlude, and jump from the year 2750BC to AD1798
the year of the French Revolution and the beginning of Europe’s new linear
measurement system, the metre.

The question I asked myself is where did they find the metre, because the
longitude length from equator to the north pole was not accurate enough for
its less than 10,000,000 metres. So where did the five mathematicians chosen
for the job get their metre from? So I say from Adam, that is from the label
of Adam and Adam’s label 930 seems to come from E.T.N.K. at 930 x 3 is label
2790. which is made of 1090 + 1700.

Because the label 930 that is divided by 0.6 is 1550 and Hey! Presto! the
square root is 39.370039 inches or 3.208083 feet to the one metre. So the
metre is the measure of a fallen angel who is of hydrogen.

I rest my case until part three.

The Taliban and Women: Lifting the Veil of Propaganda

http://www.albalagh.net/current_affairs/taliban_women.shtml

[Edited version of a Taliban report acquired by Jamiat ul Ulema, South
Africa.] Posted: 26 Rabi-ul-Awwal 1422, 18 June 2001

The treatment of women in Afghanistan is a subject that the Western Media
and feminists have concentrated their ideological warfare efforts on. It
is important to look at the policies of the Taliban as regards women and
the facts in the country itself, as reported by independent journalists.

Women's Life Conditions Presently and Before Taliban

The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan is fully committed to the social,
cultural and economic development of women. The government has been able
to protect the honor, life and property of Afghan women. Contrary to the
situation before Taliban women can now be outside their houses safely
without the fear of being kidnapped, violated or looted. They no longer
fear conditions that were common before. Even Amnesty International (a
biased anti-Taliban organization) reports of 1992-95 admitted that women
in Afghanistan bore the brunt of the atrocities by armed factions.
Irresponsible commanders and gunmen not only violated the honor of women
but mutilated women's bodies and in many cases, cut their breasts etc.
Similarly, common was murder, torture and execution of the people by the
armed factions. Due to the intolerable atrocities, the Taliban Islamic
Movement emerged to deliver the defenseless Afghan people from the cruel
hands of the warlords.

Restoration of Women's Safety, Dignity and Freedom

Being highly concerned about the well-being of its female citizens, the
Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, soon introduced measures to put a stop to
the miserable living conditions under which the women lived in Kabul.
After the communists took over in Kabul, they began to exploit women for
the purpose of advancing their political and social agendas. In spite of
war condition in the country and with no work in the offices, the
communist regime forced a large number of women to attend government
offices only for their amusement. The Islamic Emirate decided to pay the
salaries of these women at their homes, so that they could stay home and
take care of their families and children. The purpose of this policy is to
help revive the Afghan family and household, as the foundation of the
Afghan society, a foundation that was intentionally destroyed by the
communist regime. The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan is determined to
provide educational and employment opportunities for the women of
Afghanistan, as soon as the security and financial circumstances under
which the Islamic Emirate operates allow such a step to be taken. In the
meantime, the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan will try to acquire the
resources and build the facilities that would make the separate education
of women possible.

Observance of Islamic Hijab or the Veil

The enforcement of the code of Islamic Hijab by the Islamic Emirate of
Afghanistan is fully consistent with the Islamic beliefs of Afghans and
the traditions of the Afghan society. Wearing a veil is common among women
all over Afghanistan. Islam and Afghan tradition attach the greatest
importance to the honor and safety of women in the society. To comply with
the Islamic code of Hijab, as well as to reduce the degree of threat to
the personal safety of women, the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan is asking
the women to observe the Islamic Hijab, and cover their faces in public.
This is a measure that is undertaken for the simple reason of protecting
the honor, dignity, and personal safety of the women in Afghanistan.

Women's Education in the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan

Based on the holy teachings of Islam, the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan
considers education as the pillar of a healthy and prosperous individual
and social life. The Islamic Emirate is determined to provide educational
opportunities for all Afghans irrespective of gender, race, tribe,
language, or regional affiliations. The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan
considers education to be obligatory equally for men and women according
to the tenets of Islam. This is a clear verdict of our religion.

However, currently the country is in shambles, its economic structure
destroyed and education facilities turned to rubble like much else in the
country. Afghanistan requires appropriate foreign assistance to rebuild
every aspect of educational institutions. The present war situation
imposed and fueled by foreign powers diverts from Afghanistan's already
meager national resources that would be better allocated to opening more
schools. Larger and more centrally-run schools in urban areas present the
greatest challenge.

Secondly, the Afghans do not trust the communist-style curriculum. We have
to restore the trust of the common people in government-run education. We
also need to compile a new curriculum that will answer to the needs of our
society. Thirdly,

It ever was so, for 1000's of years.

However to claim the buyer was more economically motivated then

[CTRL] Lawyers make millions yet Holocaust victims get few thousand dollars each (fwd)

Lawyers make millions yet Holocaust victims get few thousand dollars each

By Mary Dejevsky in Washington

http://news.independent.co.uk/world/americas/story.jsp?story=78734

18 June 2001

The biggest beneficiaries of the hard-fought settlement for Holocaust
victims will be the lawyers who negotiated it.

While the victims will receive between $2,500 (1,780) and $7,500 each, 11
of the more than 50 lawyers involved in the case will collect fees in
excess of $1m each.

The American government's chief negotiator in the talks, Stuart Eizenstat,
denied that the discrepancy was unseemly or that the lawyers were
snatching money from the victims they had represented. "There are widely
held views that, somehow, the lawyers in these cases made out like bandits
at the expense of the Holocaust victims, which is grossly untrue," he told
The New York Times. The normal contingency fee, Mr Eizenstat said, was
one-third of the settlement. In this case, the lawyers had agreed to split
a sum that amounted to a bare 1.5 per cent of the total.

Among the highest earners are Melvyn Weiss of Milberg, Weiss, Bershad,
Hynes & Lerach, a Manhattan law firm, who will be paid $6.3m, Michael
Hausfeld of Cohen, Milstein, Hausfeld & Toll in Washington DC, who will
receive $5m and Burt Neuborne of the New York University School of Law,
who will collect $4.4m. A total of 51 lawyers were retained in a
multiplicity of lawsuits brought on behalf of people drafted as forced
labour by Nazi Germany. Most of the former labourers are now in their
seventies and eighties, and many others died in the year it took to agree
the final details of the settlement.

Agreement by German companies and the German government to create a joint
$5.5bn fund to pay reparations was followed by months of legal wrangling
in Berlin and America. The German companies wanted the settlement to be
final, and enshrine a guarantee that they would face no further liability
claims. This demand was finally met last month, when a series of
outstanding claims was dismissed by US courts. The German Parliament is
now expected to approve payments for the victims and the lawyers before
its summer recess.

The first beneficiaries, who will include the lawyers, will reportedly
receive their payments within the next month. Survivors of concentration
camps or ghettos are eligible for the highest payments $7,500 which will
be paid in two instalments: an initial payment of $5,000 and the balance
after fund administrators establish exactly how many claimants there are.
People not held in camps or ghettos but forced to work for German
companies or the government could receive $2,500.

[CTRL] an Israeli fairy tale

2001-06-19 Thread Yardbird

-Caveat Lector-

"Easing the Siege" - an Israeli fairy tale

LAW Society Press Release, 19 June 2001
http://www.lawsociety.org/Press/Preleases/2001/June/Jun19.html

Sharon and his government's claim to have eased the tight military siege
over the Palestinian territories is entirely inaccurate, as Israeli military
roadblocks are still in place and preventing Palestinians from moving
between one town and another.

LAW Society’s researchers have stated that military barriers are still
severing the different parts of the West Bank by blocking the major roads
that connect them. The Israeli troops positioned at these roadblocks only
allow Palestinians to pass in extreme cases and for a short period of time
before re-blocking the roads. People are made to wait for long hours before
being allowed to pass after having been thoroughly checked, provoked and
humiliated. In any case, private cars are not allowed to pass through
roadblocks.

LAW Society’s researchers have also noted that the roadblocks claimed to be
partially opened are under surveillance by closed circuit cameras.

According to our researchers, since reaching a ceasefire agreement with the
Palestinian Authority (PNA) the Israeli authorities have allowed taxis and
ambulances to pass through Qalandia roadblock, Nablus-Qalqilya roadblock,
Qalqilya-Tulkarem roadblock, Hebron-Al Aroub roadblock and Gaza’s Salah
Eddin roadblock. However, the concrete blocks are still in place.

Israeli authorities have reopened Rafah and Al Karama border crossings, but
do not allow Palestinian officers to be there.

LAW Society’s researchers have monitored the following changes on the
ground:

1. On June 14, Israeli bulldozers bulldozed Dura-Dir Samit road in Hebron
and blocked it with sand barriers
2. On June 16, Israeli bulldozers bulldozed Betin-Al Bireh road
3. On June 17, Jaba-Sanur road in the district of Jenin was bulldozed and
blocked
4. On June, 18, Israeli troops closed Ramallah-Birzeit road
5. On June 18, Israeli troops blocked Tulkarem-Al Kafriyat road with sand
barriers
6. On June 18, Israeli troops blocked the roads to Bardala, Kardala, and al
Baki’a in the Jordan Valley by digging trenches in them.
7. On June 18, Israeli bulldozers bulldozed and blocked the roads to Aboud,
Dura Al Kari’a, Ain Areek, Dier Nitham, Ain Yabroud, Burham, and Dier Jarir
in Ramallah district. They also bulldozed the road connecting Burham and Um
Safa
8. On June 18, Bani Na’im road in Hebron was blocked with sand barriers
9. On June 19, Israeli troops placed sand barriers on Surif-Hebron road

Moreover, the roads leading to Biet Ta’mar, Za’tara, Marah Rabah, and Al
Asakra in Bethlehem district are still blocked. Hebron-Bethlehem road is
still closed and the roads connecting Hebron with Sa’ir, al Shuyukh, Yata,
and Bani Na’im are still closed.

LAW researchers in Nablus stated that the Israeli occupation authorities did
open the eastern entrance to Nablus, but it was only for a very short while
and the Israeli soldiers stationed there intentionally delayed Palestinian
commuters for long hours before either letting them through or forcing them
to turn back. The entrance was completely blocked again on June 18,
preventing residents of Biet Fureek and Biet Dajan from returning home. When
people took the long unpaved mountainous track, Israeli troops brought
bulldozers to block it off.

At 5:30 pm on June 18, residents of Biet Dajan attempted to open the road to
their village but Israeli soldiers stopped and verbally abused them. People
stated later that they had seen a bomb next to the roadblock.

On Tuesday June 19, Israeli soldiers stopped residents of the villages
around Nablus from reaching the town. LAW Society’s researcher stated that
he had seen Israeli soldiers assaulting and beating Palestinians attempting
to reach Nablus on foot. Israeli troops have also prevented water tankards
from reaching Biet Dajan and Biet Fureek, although the two Palestinian
villages are not connected to a water network. Israeli soldiers also
frequently chase Palestinian farmers in the two villages and fire teargas at
them.

Israeli troops are still blocking the western entrance to Nablus, forcing
commuters to take long mountainous detours. According to LAW’s researcher,
the road to the Palestinian village of Al Nakura has been blocked off with
sand; this road was used by commuters from Nablus, Jenin, Tulkarem and
Qalqilya as a detour to Nablus.

To make things worse, Palestinian high school students, who are currently
sitting their final exams, have been facing great difficulty reaching the
examination centers. 18-year-old Shadi Al Khatib, a high school student from
Atara, was stopped at an Israeli army roadblock near Birzeit and forced to
return home. However, Shadi took a mountainous track and arrived at the exam
center thirty minutes late for his exam and in bad shape.

LAW re-emphasises that Israel’s claim of easing the siege is false and
reiterates the following:

The Israeli siege violates the rig

JoeCartoon.com, which features off-color underground comic strips such
as Frog Blender and Micro-Gerbil, is famous enough to be protected
under a U.S. anti-cybersquatting law, an appeals court has decided.

The Third Circuit Court of Appeals said on Friday that a Pennsylvania
man who registered five variations of the domain name -- such as
joescartoon.com, joecarton.com, and cartoonjoe.com -- violated the
1999 Anti-Cybersquatting Consumer Protection Act.

A trucking company can't install hidden cameras and microphones in
employee bathrooms, a federal appeals court said.

Consolidated Freightways argued that it was allowed to place
surveillance devices behind mirrors in restrooms at its terminal in
Mira Loma, California because of a collective bargaining agreement it
inked with the Teamsters that was protected under federal law.

But when workers discovered the equipment after a mirror fell out of
the wall, they sued under a California state law saying anyone who
installs a "two-way mirror permitting observation of any restroom" is
guilty of a misdemeanor.

Yes of course. It does the heart good to know that these nuns will be in
jail and not interfering while the U.S. teaches more effective methods of
torture to our friends in Central and South America. Let's hear it for the

By the way, I thought that U.S. military installations were actually the
property of the people. Was that an old law? My understanding was that U.S.
citizens were to be allowed access to military installations as long as they
didn't go into classified areas. Prudy

Since airplanes didn't exist 100 years ago, just how did this

Most standard weather/meteorological texts/sites tell us that cloud

[CTRL] Forgive Me, Dot-Com Father, for I Have Sinned

It's all about convenience...we can buy a car online, buy our
favorite books online, groceries, toys, clothes...and now we can get forgiveness
online...soon, we may never need to interact with another human--if we so
choose--again. Although, I still don't know how to fill my car with gas
online...but I probably won't need a car very much longer really anyway, now
that I don't have to drive all the way over to my priest for forgiveness--it's
just another annoying task I can mark off my list.

Who can forgive sin but God alone?...asks my KJV bible (Mark

own closet if they so wish) work the best and be of the most convenience. Don't
get me wrong...many Priests/Pastors/Rabbi's whatever have done a great many good
deeds for peopel seeking council and spiritual enlightment and advice. They
dedicate their lives to studying these things and are of a great service to
their surrounding communities-- when they refrain from playing God Himself that
is.

And by the way, prayer was set up a long long time ago...so
come on dot.comology give us something new already will ya?

It's a tragedy that he lost his wife so

nevertheless he is just as responsible for kicking off this mess as anyone. My
two cents.

ignited a fuse in McVeigh’ s mind, leading, in part, to the explosion that
killed 168 people.“I can sympathize with McVeigh,” Weaver said Tuesday

Re: [CTRL] SETI and E.T.

2001-06-19 Thread John Miller

-Caveat Lector-

SETI - Looking for E.T.

But first I went 'back to school' so to speak, to find some information that
I had forgotten or had never learnt or understood.

So hydrogen is the lightest and most abundant element making up about 90% of
the Universe. Hydrogen in the form of water (H2O) is needed for everyday
life and is found in all organic compounds.

When hydrogen is burned in air, only water is produced. To produce hydrogen,
natural gas can be steam reformed. It can also be made from water through
electrolysis. Hydrogen is the primary component of Jupiter and the other gas
giant planets. At some depth in the planet's interior the pressure is so
great that solid molecular hydrogen is converted to solid metallic hydrogen.
The star Sirius has the spectrum of hydrogen.

And the radio wavelength of hydrogen is the very 'sound' of the Universe at
a dominant natural radio frequency of 1420 megahertz.

OK, I need to mention the technical bit that hydrogen atoms have energy
states associated with the `spins' of the proton and electron. And 1420
megahertz is the natural frequency for the precession of the spin of its
electron as it encircles the atomic nucleus and so forms the element called
hydrogen.

And so hydrogen has a wavelength of 21.11cm and at a frequency of 1420MHz
and at this frequency there is little background noise that helps those
'listening' to the 'sound' of the Universe to discover if there is another
life force out there.

And so to Project SETI

As you know SETI is the acronym for the 'Search for ExtraTerrestrial
Intelligence'. It is the search for electromagnetic signals from other
civilizations in the Universe. Several SETI projects currently operate at
different observatories. The majority of SETI efforts search for radio
transmissions, but a growing number of programs search for light signals
thanks to the SETI Institute and The Planetary Society. The chief operation
of The SETI Institute is Project Phoenix, a highly sensitive search
targeting sun-like stars, using the Arecibo Radio Telescope in Puerto Rico.

Now it was in Hollywood in 1985 that Steven Spielberg that turned on the
switch of an early SETI program called Project META, which stands for
MegaChannel Extraterrestrial Array. And at first META was involved with the
26 metre radio telescope at Harvard, Massachusetts, USA, where META used
1420 megahertz and its so called second harmonic at 2840 megahertz, but now
as Project META II, The MegaChannel Extraterrestrial Assay, currently
operates near to Buenos Aires, Argentina.

By the end of 1994, META II covered the southern sky almost three times,
scanning only at the 21cm wavelength and every 20 seconds, the META system
received an 8.4-million-channel spectrum profile. Since the 21cm line has a
precisely known wavelength, astronomers can map out the distribution of
hydrogen gas in the galaxy and, more importantly, determine its movements.

The Planetary Society says about the SERENDIP IV, namely the 'Search for
Extraterrestrial Radio Emissions from Nearby Developed Intelligent
Populations'. The Planetary Society like most SETI experiments, SERENDIP IV
is scanning the skies at the 21-cm wavelength which is that of hydrogen.

"The sky is relatively quiet at that frequency, natural phenomena tend to
'broadcast' at other frequencies, so a civilization trying to contact Earth
with a radio beacon might well use the 21-cm band. The 168 million channel
receiver, made possible by Planetary Society members, has been working
perfectly."

The Planetary Society has for part of its logo a sailing ship, a design
which they say links the explorers of the Renaissance, who sailed Earth's
uncharted oceans, with today's radio space explorers, who sail into the
expanses of the cosmos, the oceans of space.

The N-Game with E.T.C.K and E.T.N.K.

Now the purpose of the N-Game is show that number labels play a very
important part in the structure of everything we can see in our own
dimension and also in the other dimensions.

And this is where it gets interesting for me, and that is because
1,420,000,000 cycles per second for the hydrogen wavelength divided by Pi is
452,000,038.4. And so hydrogen has two fundamental N-Game numbers, the
labels marked 142 and 452.

So these two numbers of 142 and 452 are what any extraterrestrial beings
will understand as having a direct relationship to hydrogen and so sent by
another life form namely us via the SETI programs.

OK, let me show you something that any E.T. will know, and that is the
velocity of electromagnetism and light in a vacuum is some 186,282.478 miles
per second and 71% of this is 132,260.5598 miles per second, and this number
in scientific terms, is the so called 'magic speed' which is do with time
itself. And 132,260.559 squared twice is 3.06000e+20.

So 71% (142/2) ensures that light is formed and fashioned out of the number
306. And 306, less 17 = 17 x 17.

And it so happens that 153 (half of 306) is a 'triangular' number (in the
Pythagore

Subject:[CIA-DRUGS] Body Counts by Paul Krassner

This is an unedited version of my op-ed piece due to be published by the
L.A. Times, most likely on Monday:

Body Counts

Timothy McVeigh is gone, but the malady lingers on: people somehow
robotized out of their innate compassion. During the Vietnam war, there
developed a horrible ritual that was broadcast across the nation on the
TV
news--every Thursday, for some reason. It was the body count. So many
"American dead"; so many "Vietnamese dead"; so many "Enemy dead." Just
abstract numbers, functioning to hide the utter futility of it all. U.S.
military intervention killed three million Vietnamese, as well as some
60,000 Americans. One Thursday, my four-year-old daughter, Holly, was
sitting on my lap as I watched Walter Cronkite deliver the CBS News.
When
it came to the body count that evening, she asked, "Is that happening in
our
universe?"

I experienced a flashback to that moment when it was disclosed how
McVeigh
had referred to the murdered children in the bombed Oklahoma City's
Murrah
Federal Building as "collateral damage," a concept he had learned as a
soldier fighting in the Gulf War to make the world safe for oil
magnates.
On the one hand, it was an utterance of legalized evil. On the other
hand,
it was an expression of the darkest possible humor, inadvertently
satirizing
American chauvinism.

In a strange way, it reminded me of Lenny Bruce in 1962. He was
intrigued
by the implications of a statement by Adolf Eichmann that he would have
been
"not only a scoundrel, but a despicable pig" if he hadn't carried out
Hitler's orders. Performing at the Gate of Horn in Chicago, he requested
that all the lights be shut off except for one dim blue spotlight. Then,
in
a most audacious act for a comedian, he credited Thomas Merton's poem
about
the Holocaust and, extrapolating on it, began addressing the audience
with a
German accent:

"My name is Adolf Eichmann. And the Jews came every day to what they
thought would be fun in the showers. People say I should have been hung.
Nein. Do you recognize the whore in the middle of you--that you would
have
done the same if you were there yourselves? My defense: I was a soldier.
I
saw the end of a conscientious day's effort. I watched through the
portholes. I saw every Jew burned and turned into soap. Do you people
think yourselves better because you burned your enemies at long distance
without ever seeing what you had done to them? Hiroshima auf
Wiedersehen.
[German accent ends.] If we would have lost the war, they would have
strung
[President Harry] Triman up by the balls"

Bruce was arrested for obscenity that night. One of the items in the
police report complained, "Then talking about the war he stated, 'If we
would have lost the war, they would have strung Truman up by the
balls.'"
The cops also broke open Lenny's candy bars, looking for drugs.

And so it came to pass that McVeigh--perhaps the only positive remnant
of
his legacy--inadvertently forced us to come to grips with the
realization
that the grief of families on the other side of the globe matched the
grief
of families in Oklahoma City. McVeigh's attorneys have clung to his
defense
with a sense of identification that could be identified as Reverse
Stockholm
Syndrome. It is an ethical disease of the profession that certainly
affected O. J. Simpson's dream team. More recently, a lawyer for the man
who killed Madalyn Murray O'Hair, her son and granddaughter, insisted
that
they had all committed suicide. And, presumably, buried themselves.
But the inhumanity epitomized by McVeigh transcends military action.
Citizens do it all the time. For example, the Partnership for a
Drug-Free
America is sponsored, ironically enough, by pharmaceutical, alcohol and
tobacco industries. From 1970 to 1998, the revenue of major
pharmaceutical
companies more than quadrupled to $81 billion. In 1999, 100,000 people
died
from prescription drugs. Alcohol killed 150,000. And 450,000 died from
smoking cigarettes. All collateral damage.

As long as the government can arbitrarily decide which drugs are legal
and
which drugs are illegal, then everyone who is behind bars for a
nonviolent
drug offense is a political prisoner of the war on drugs. That is, the
war
on some people who use some drugs.

In the book, Trust Us, We're Experts, John Stauber and Sheldon Rampton
report that in the early 1990s, tobacco companies paid $156,000 to
thirteen
academic scientists to write letters to influential medical journals,
arguing the tobacco industry's case. A biostatistican was paid $10,000
for
an eight-paragraph letter published in the Journal of the American
Medical
Association. Was he any better than Timothy McVeigh? At least McVeigh
acted out of principle, albeit the ultimate perversion of principle.
Meanwhile, every day continues to be Thursday.

Just to be clear, I never said you did. I was making a point that you made an
error
saying "John Birch and his latter day followers, were alarmists, IMHO."

He was never an alarmist, since he was never part of the movement
whose followers you say were alarmists.

He was never an extremist patriot either - one can only wonder at
where you get these thoughts from. He died 13 years before the
JBS was founded, was simply a member of the U.S. Armed Forces,
and expressed no alarmist or extremist views.

As to Goldwater, you're on your own with that.

You might, however, wish to avail yourself of a copy of

You have a good imagination. But when I see something resembling your
face I bury it quickly for fear of retribution from God.

I love you Saba as much as I love God, Jesus, or ~Amelia~, God of Tilde.

Re: [CTRL] Captain John Birch

-Caveat Lector-

Just to be clear, I never stated that John Birch was a member of the John
Birch Society.

But I think he might have been an extremist patriot, not that that is a bad
thing to be (Extremism in the virtue of freedom is not a dead horse, or
some such progress. Please update me on Goldwater, how soon the
liberals forget, or some such rot... Or do you dispute that also. :)

Re: [CTRL] The Truth About Black Slavery And The Confederate Flag

2001-06-19 Thread Nessie

-Caveat Lector-

Slavery was first and foremost an economic institution. If you really
want to understand what it was all about, you have to analyze the
economics of the trade.

By far and away, the best book on the economics of slavery is Capitalism
& Slavery by Eric Eustace Williams, ISBN 0807844888. Williams was a
consummate scholar. He worked entirely from primary sources. His study
went far beyond the slave trade itself. He examines in minute detail
the role that the slave trade played in the rest of the economy world,
and especially of England. He examines not only supporting industries
such as ship building and shackle production, but also stuff that many
of us might have overlooked.

He draws from banking records, bills of lading, production quotas, etc.
to demonstrate how virtually every aspect of the England’s economy
benefited, directly and indirectly from slavery. He makes use of such
seemingly unrelated statistics as cloth yard production records and
quarry extract tonnage. He ties these together with real estate
transactions, payroll records, contemporary newspapers (both articles
and advertising) and records of parliamentary debate on such disparate
matters as tariffs and naval procurement.

Among his most fascinating lines of inquiry is to follow the fortunes of
certain leading families, some of whom grew incredibly wealthy off of
the slave trade without even ever becoming directly invloved. Among
those who were directly involved, we find virtually every family of
prominence in English society.

Another of Williams’ more productive lines of inquiry is civic
engineering. Not only was a great deal of the wealth of England’s ruling
families derived from human flesh, but also the wealth of cities. He
uses real estate transfer tax records, building contractors’ payroll,
and receipts for the brick and marble of the still standing improvements
on the land, to illustrate his thesis. Much of England’s finest
architecture was mortared with African, and to a lesser extent Irish,
blood.

Many of Old Blighty’s victims rail against this “nation of pirates,”
from whose fangs blood still drips. Most however, rely on anecdotal
evidence, the more heart rending, the better. There is no dearth of such
gruesome tales. There are more than enough bloody shirts to wave. But
Williams foregoes the easy route. Instead, he condemns England with her
own receipts. He proves beyond any shadow of a doubt that economic
cornerstone upon which England’s wealth is built is slavery. The money
it generated, both directly and indirectly, made England what it is
today. Though it is a shadow of its former self, England is still an
Evil Empire par excellence. That the core of it’s fortune is blood
money, Williams proves beyond doubt.

Williams himself is an interesting character. For a long time he was a
professor at Howard University. Later on he served for a while as Prime
Minister of Trinidad and Tobago. I never would have heard of the guy had
I not read Redneck Manifesto by Jim Goad, ISBN 0684831139. Goad’s book
is a truly excellent piece of sociology. It ranks with the best. I
recommend it highly. He devotes an entire chapter of Redneck Manifesto
toa condensation of Williams’ work.

While the serious scholar will find Goads‘s condensed version no
substitute for the original, it certainly does make for much lighter
reading. By all means, read Goad first. But don’t stop there. Go ahead
and dig into his sources, especially Capitalism and Slavery. Take notes
if it will help. Goad certainly did. No single book gives a better
understanding of the enormously far reaching effects of slavery.

Most work on the subject focuses on the moral, political and
sociological aspects. That ain’t the half of it. As Williams makes
abundantly clear, slavery transformed the world. Capitalism as we know
it today could never have developed without slavery. Neither could have
much of modern life. To think of slavery as something that happened in
the past, and that is no longer relevant, is an attitude at odds with
the facts. It’s echoes can be seen, not only in the distorted
interpersonal relationships that it’s legacy forces upon us, but also in
the ledgers of every bank and most corporations. They are still making
money with the money they made of of slavery. To understand them one
must understand slavery. To do this, one must, as Deep Throat so
succinctly put it, “follow the money.”
