U.S. Patent and Trademark Office issues cold fusion patent: scientists plan
devices for home use

According to a report in the new technology journal Infinite Energy (Issue 41,
2002), the U.S. Patent Office has approved a cold fusion patent. Although the
details behind the patent are being withheld for proprietary reasons,
according to Infinite Energy Editor-in-Chief Eugene F. Mallove, U.S. Patent
#6,248,221 for Electrolysis Apparatus and Electrodes and Electrode
Material Therefor, issued to Randolph R. Davis and Thomas F. McGraw, is
definitely a patent for a form of cold fusion technology. The Davis and
McGraw patent cites several cold fusion papers, including Pons and
Fleishmann's 1989 article Electrochemically Induced Nuclear Fusion of
Deuterium.

Mallove, a Harvard Ph.D. with a Master of Science Degree in Aeronautical
and Astronautical Engineering from MIT, called the USPTO's decision to
issue the patent a landmark decision. To those familiar with the evolution of
cold fusion, it is clear why Mallove characterized the development in
breakthrough terms. The USPTO has a long history of disdain toward cold
fusion, and routinely rejects patents solely on the premise that cold fusion is a
form of perpetual motion, and thus impossible.

Why the Davis and McGraw patent was allowed to slip by the usual cold
fusion censors remains a mystery, but while it is certain Patent #6,248,221
represents a breakthrough, it is not the first time a cold fusion patent has
fallen through the cracks at the USPTO. A cold fusion device invented by
physical chemist James Patterson is patented under U.S. Patents
#4,943,355 and #5,036,031. According to Mallove, the most recent
Patterson patent was granted by accident in 1994: [This is the] first U.S.
patent granted in the cold fusion field, he reports, the DOE [Department of
Energy] made a mistake and didn't squash [the patent] as they did to several
hundred others. They tried to stop it many times but failed.

It is not likely that the USPTO has changed its decade-old anti-cold fusion
stance, but the existence of these patents insures that more are likely to slip
by, gradually paving the way for commercialization of cold fusion
technologies already shown to be viable in laboratories around the world.

Davis and McGraw, in a paper presented at the American Nuclear Society's
33rd Intersociety Engineering Conference on Energy Conversion (Critical
Factors in Transitioning from Fuel Cell to Cold Fusion Technology), explain
why more patents are likely to be issued, even by the perennially biased U.S.
Patent Office:

Many scientists, engineers, and investors have given cold fusion serious
attention since Pons and Fleischmann discovered it in the mid-to-late 1980s.
The New Energy Partners venture captial firm, for example, has supported
companies with working prototypes, and several prototypes are being tested
to determine heat output levels and reaction rates. Approximately 1500
papers from technical journals and conferences have reported some degree
of replication of the cold fusion effect (800 in U.S.); 300 related patent
applications have been developed in the U.S.; and 100 patents have been
granted in Japan.

According to Mallove, Davis and McGraw predict the advent of cold fusion
based 10kW electricity generating home units in the foreseeable future.
Mallove estimates the ultimate cost of the electricity generated by the
devices to be far less than one cent per kilowatt-hour. This is compared to
the 1999 national average of over six cents per kilowatt-hour, as estimated
by Public Citizen (www.citizen.org).

Even if technology promising a 80-90% reduction in energy costs does not
compel the USPTO to adopt a more open-minded stance toward cold fusion,
it is certain that the newest cold fusion patent, and the bold predictions of
new energy researchers, will serve to bring more scientists back into the cold
fusion fray.

An audiotape of President Bush practicing Tuesday night's State of the
Union speech was anonymously messengered to me just hours ago. While it
is an obvious early draft, it appears to have been written -- or even
improvised -- by the president himself. Here is a transcript of the
tape:

Mr. Speaker, Mr. Vice President (wherever you may be), members of the
107th Congress, distinguished guests, Fluffy, Kenny Boy, my fallow
Americans:


I'm real sleepy, so I'll keep this short. My mother always told me to
chew my pretzel before I swallow.

Okay, okay, calm down. It wasn't that funny!


I stand here before you as a proud American, a proud president, a proud

As America returns to its routine and the wake of horror ebbs, we all
carry painful memories with us. But some have endured more pain than

Linda's husband Ken embodies what it means to be an American. Ken was
one of the heroic figures that led the charge out just as everything
around him was collapsing.


Although he could not save everyone -- in fact, he was only able to help
his closest friends and associates -- he nonetheless personifies my own
definition of patriotism.

Actually I don't. His show is run on Chicago cable but for whatever reason my suburban cable company doesn't pick it up, preferring to thrill us with rebroadcasts of 6-month old planning commission meetings.

Skolnick is however a minor celeb here, moreso a few decades ago than now, his crusade to clean up the courts and his investigation of that plane crash out at Midway many years ago were indeed big stories that made him famous, though usually the media here covered him as a curio or a crank rather than actually looking at his research.

Such is the story of the late-Congressman Lawrence Patton "Larry" McDonald (D-GA) -- former U.S. Naval Reserves flight-surgeon-turned-lawmaker-turned Presidential hopeful. In death, even, for the Establishment's purposes, the most dangerous man in America.

Like so many stories approved by "our government," the "official version" does not jibe with the facts.

George P. Schultz, then-U.S. Secretary of State, ended the probe of the downed Korean Airlines Flight 007 in December 1983, barely three months after the event, explaining that the Boeing 747 aboard which was Larry McDonald flew off its scheduled course, strayed into then-Soviet airspace, and that Soviet pilot Major Gennadiy Nikolayevich Osipovich, at the helm of a Soviet Su-15 fighter jet and upon the orders of Col. Gen. Ivan M. Tretyak, commander of the Far Eastern Military District, obliterated the craft in mid-air with two air-to-air missiles and that its passengers and crew were destroyed along with it (ICAO Report, December 1983, Appendix D, page D-3) (Istvestia articles, 1991).

Dan Rather, at CBS, and other Talking Heads, nodded with relief at this explanation, and then-President Ronald Reagan contented himself with the Senate's non-binding "condemnation" of the U.S.S.R., which was Senate Joint Resolution H.J. Res. 353, in proceedings chaired by then-Senator John Tower (R-TX) who would himself perish in an airline crash in 1991.

But that is not what happened

In fact, the evidence of a successful landing of KAL 007 on Sakhalin Island or an at-sea ditching, with surviving passengers, Congressman McDonald among them, is so massive--from signed FAA logs, to official statements from Japanese Civil Aviation Bureau, to testimony from Korean lawmakers and Korean CIA (KCIA)--that the only rightful conclusion is one of cover-up.

Evidence of a Landing at Sakhalin Island

Signed logs of Duty Officer Orville Brockman at Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) headquarters in Washington, DC., of FAA representative Mr. Dennis Wilhelm, Tokyo, and reports from a "Mr. Takano" at the Japanese Civil Aviation Bureau headquarters, Air Traffic Division, all show that KAL 007 was not destroyed, and was, in fact, guided down to Sakhalin Island--a disputed territory held jointly by the former U.S.S.R. and Japan.

Of the many sightings or confirmations of the Sakhalin Island landing, the most salient and verifiable are these:

--C. K. Suh, Manager of the American Regional Office of Korean Air Lines in Los Angeles, contacted by telephone Congressman McDonald's press aide Tommy Toles, stated that he had "just called Korean Air Lines in Seoul" and that "the information I [Suh] got from them is that [the] U.S. Embassy in Korea informed the Korean Government, Minister of Foreign Affairs...that the plane has landed in Sakhalin."

--From FAA directly, Mr. Toles received a phone call from one of its officers, who stated:

"This is Duty Officer Orville Brockman at FAA headquarters in Washington, DC. We have just received information from our FAA representative, Mr. Dennis Wilhelm in Tokyo, as follows: He has been advised by the Japanese Civil Aviation Bureau headquarters, Air Traffic Division, Mr. Takano -- T-a-k-a-n-o -- who is his counterpart in Japanese aviation, as follows: Japanese self-defense force confirms that the Hokkaido radar followed Air Korea to a landing in Soviet territory on the island of Sakhalinska -- S-a-k-h-a-l-i-n-s-k-a -- and it is confirmed by the manifest that Congressman McDonald is on board."

In his quest for world domination (and his re-election) President George W. Bush is now threatening to destroy countries from Iraq to Indonesia. The U. S. has already brutally killed innocent Pakistan and Afghanistan. Now our popular president wants to destroy North Korea, Indonesia and the Philippines. Is there no safe refuge from American bomb?

The president wants more wars despite the fact that former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright’s Pew Research Center shows that 275 world leaders are against his plans and believe that America’s own policies caused the Sept. 11 attacks. Why do you think people from London to Rome are demonstrating against American action in Afghanistan? The survey shows that over 70 percent of those interviewed in other countries believe it is a good thing that the US suffered a wake-up attack so that American policies can be corrected world wide.

There is no legal way that John Walker can be tried for treason. He is not guilty of any crimes against the United States of America.

He joined the Taliban for purely religious reasons. At the time he joined, the U. S. was not at war with the Taliban or any other faction in Afghanistan. In fact, the U. S. was very proud of the Taliban and applauded their efforts to rid the country of the Russians and paid them to do so with cash and many weapons. Walker had no relations with Osama bin Laden or any terrorist camps. He did not attack any U. S. forces. It was the other way around. Americans attacked his group. Well, they actually did not attack, but stood back at safe distance and urged the Northern Alliance forces to do the dangerous part. He was attacked while a wounded prisoner of war. He never gave up his citizenship nor verbally attacked the U. S.

The Stinger missiles used by the Taliban against the Russians and Communist Afghan tribes were gifts from America. Members of Congress called the Taliban our greatest friends I the world. At that time the U S publicly denounced the Northern Alliance as a group of Communists, thieves, dope peddlers and assorted criminals of the worst sort.

Then a funny thing happened on the way to war. The U. S. suddenly switched sides and began deriding the Taliban and praising the very group our government had despised vehementlythe hated Northern Alliance. I guess one could conclude that it does not pay to be a friend of the USA. It certainly wasn’t John Walker who changed sides. It was the U S. And just because he didn’t also change sides, he is to be punished. How ridiculous! And how illegal to charge him with anything.

If the U S government really wants to try those who are really guilty of fighting against their nation, it should put on trial the Americans who fought for Israel against the United States of America by attacking the USS Liberty on June 8, 1967.

In the 1950s Congress passed a law making it illegal for Americans to serve in the armed forces of another country. Of course, under this law Israel is not exempt. But in practice none of the many Americans who have joined the Israeli Defense Force have ever been arrested or even called disloyal to their own country. That’s the last thing any U.S. court would ever do. It’s not legal! It’s not fair! But that’s how it is today.

Every agency of the U. S government is too frightened to ever go against Israel in any matter. And that is why you have so many votes of 159 to 2 in the U. N., with, of course, the U. S. and Israel being the two dissenters. The U. S. constantly uses its Security Council veto to stop any resolution concerning Israel. It is automatic.

In other words, the United States is more pro-Israel than either American Jews or the people of Israel. Abject fear does this to our nation.

During the Clinton administration, three of the five cabinet members who ran the country were reserve officers in the Israeli Army. What that means is that Israeli officers were running the entire U S government. Yet no one complained.

Another manner in which Americans are totally controlled is through religious propaganda myths such as the "chosen people" myth. Jewish leaders laugh about how many Americans have voluntarily made slaves of themselves. For instance, in one of my books, there is a photo of an unfortunate 12-year old Palestinian boy whose right eye was cut out by an Israeli soldier using an American Army knife paid for by U.S. taxpayers. I do not like for my tax money to be used for such purposes. But a survey shows that many very religious Americans are not at all upset by it. I have asked the people who are dumb enough to be followers of Rev. Jerry Falwell and Rev. Pat Robertson about this incident. And guess what they told me? These highly brainwashed individuals told me that such atrocities are completely justified. They all agreed that it was perfectly all right for this boy to lose his eye because it was

Feb. 1 â Federal aviation authorities and technology companies will
soon begin testing a vast air security screening system designed to
instantly pull together every passenger's travel history, living arrangements
and a wealth of other personal and demographic information.

`This is not fantasy stuff. This technology, based on transaction
analysis, behavior analysis, gives us a pretty good idea of what's going on
in
a person's mind.'

Security consultant  THE GOVERNMENT'S plan is to establish a
computer network linking every reservation system in the United
States to private and government databases. The network would use data-mining
and predictive software to profile passenger activity and intuit obscure
clues about potential threats, even before the scheduled day of flight.

PRIVACY WORRIES

   It might find, for instance, that one man used a debit card to
buy tickets for four other men who sit in separate parts of the same
plane â four men who have shared addresses in the past. Or it might discern
that someone who is unemployed or a low-wage worker is buying a one-way
first-class ticket to a destination he has never visited.

   Those sorts of details â along with many other far more subtle
patterns identified by computer programs â would contribute to a
threat index or score for every passenger.

   Passengers with higher scores would be singled out for
additional screening by authorities.  As described by developers, the system
will be an unobtrusive network enabling authorities to target potential
threats far more effectively while reducing lines at security checkpoints for
most passengers. Critics
say it would be one of the largest monitoring systems ever created by the
government and a huge intrusion on privacy.

   At least one airline, Delta, has been working with several
companies on a prototype. Northwest Airlines has acknowledged that it is
talking with other airlines about a similar screening system. Federal
authorities
hope to test at least two different prototypes in coming months or possibly
sooner, according to government and industry sources familiar with the effort.

   This is not fantasy stuff, said Joseph Del Balzo, a former
acting administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration and a security
consultant working on one of the profiling projects. This technology, based
on transaction analysis, behavior analysis, gives us a pretty good idea of
what's going on in a person's mind.

   The screening plans reflect a growing faith among aviation and
government leaders that information technology can solve some of the
nation's most vexing security problems by rooting out and snaring
people who intend to commit terrorist acts.

   But a range of policy and technical questions still need to be
answered before the system can become a reality. The Transportation
Security Administration, for example, must decide on a set of standards so
technology companies and airlines can begin building a system. They must also
figure out how to pay for the system and its operation. Industry officials
have said they hope the system will cost, on average, less than $2 per
ticket.

 Officials at the TSA declined to comment, saying they did
not want to disclose any details that might undermine aviation security.

   Government officials and companies also face questions about
privacy. In interviews, more than a dozen people working on two parallel
projects said they are taking pains to protect individual privacy. They
intend
to limit the personal information shared with airlines and security
officials.
Instead, passengers' records are likely to be color-coded based on the level
of threat computers determine they pose.

 But developers face restrictions on how much information they
can use. Industry officials have already discussed with lawmakers the
possibility of rolling back some privacy protections in the Fair
Credit Reporting Act and Driver's Privacy Protection Act to enable them to
use more of the credit and driver data.

   Civil liberties activists said they fear the system could be
the beginnings of a surveillance infrastructure that will erode existing
privacy protections. When told about the system, Barry Steinhardt, associate
director of the ACLU, said it would be a massive complex system of
surveillance.

The public consensus that the Israeli prime minister, Ariel Sharon, has
marshalled behind his policies cracked yesterday. Polls showed him receiving
his lowest public approval rating in months, and 50 more combat reservist
officers added their names to a petition calling on soldiers to refuse to
serve in the occupied territories.
There are now 104 signatories to the petition, which is the most serious
domestic challenge to his policies on the Palestinians since he came to
power one year ago.

We will not take part in the war for the peace of the settlements, said
the petition, originally published in the press on January 25. We will not
fight beyond the Green Line [Israel's 1967 border with the West Bank] in
order to rule, expel, destroy, blockade, assassinate, starve and humiliate
an entire people.

The protest has rattled Mr Sharon and the army, which was swift to attribute
political rather than moral motives to its conscientious objectors.

This is incitement to rebellion, the army's chief of staff, Shaul Mofaz,
said yesterday.

Four petitioners have been suspended from officer duties; the others are to
face disciplinary measures, the army said. The punishments follow prison
terms imposed on 49 reservists for refusing to serve in the occupied
territories since the intifada erupted 16 months ago.

The difference with the latest protest is its public character, and the
sympathetic hearing it has received.

Even the former head of the Shin Bet intelligence service, Ami Ayalon, told
Israeli television that he felt a lot of empathy for the reserve officers
when they were asked to execute blatantly illegal orders.

As far as I'm concerned, too few soldiers are refusing such orders. To
shoot an unarmed youth is a blatantly illegal order. I am very worried by
the number of Palestinian children shot in the last year.

The protest also resonates with the predominant public mood of despair in
Israel at the continuing violent confrontation with the Palestinians.

This has seen Mr Sharon's popularity ratings drop from 57% in December to
48%, the daily newspaper Maariv said.

Writing in Israel's Yediot Aharonot newspaper last week, the columnist Nahum
Barnea said the latest Palestinian attack in west Jerusalem had made people
more pessimistic about Mr Sharon. They knew their prime minister was no
better than they were: neither they nor he have an answer.

Avraham Burg, the Labour Speaker of the Israeli parliament, insisted this
week that he would address the Palestinian parliament in Ramallah, despite
Mr Sharon's campaign to ostracise the Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat.

The occupation corrupts, or, more accurately, the occupation has already
corrupted, Mr Burg told the knesset.

leader Yasser Arafat's inner circle this week, the first such meeting since
he became prime minister, a Palestinian official said.

Despite his recent tough public statements, he met on Wedneday with Mr

a Palestinian economic adviser, Khaled Salam, the official, who spoke on
condition of anonymity, said. Mr Sharon's adviser, Raanan Gissin, declined

America's campaign in Afghanistan is winding down, but who will be its next
big target in the war on terror remains in the realm of conjecture. Of the
three chief members of the axis of evil that George Bush identified in his
state of the union address - Iraq, Iran and North Korea - he dedicated most
of his wrath and spoke most threateningly of that hardiest of Washington's
villains, Saddam Hussein.
Yet, if Israel gets its way, the next target could be Iran. President Bush
was forthright in his address: he told Tehran to stop harbouring al-Qaida
terrorists and added the heavyhanded threat that if it did not, he would
deal with Iran in diplomatic ways, initially.

Israel has long portrayed the Islamic republic as its gravest long-term
threat, the rogue state at its most menacing, combining sponsorship of
international terror, nuclear ambition, ideological objection to the
existence of the Jewish state and unflagging determination to sabotage the
Middle East peace process.

Israel classifies Iran as one of those far threats - Iraq being another -
that distinguish it from the near ones: the Palestinians and neighbouring

This is about "Feds Want Hispanics." Have we sunk that low in lawlessness? 
This is open racism against any other ethnic group but Hispanics! And the U.S. 
Government is promoting this racism? Where is the ACLU? What happened to a 
"color blind society?" How come they are taking up racial profiling to give 
jobs? I thought our government wanted us to be color blind! If anybody were to 
make a statement that they want Irish, or German, or any other ethnic group for 
jobs, there would be hell to pay from the Hispanic "leaders." How come Jesse 
Jackson is not screaming on behalf of black Americans? So, all that is required 
now to work for the government is that one has a Hispanic surname? Does one have 
to have a certain IQ at least, or just be a Hispanic? I am an American Hispanic 
and find this an outrage and embarrassing.

Powerful Israeli Lobbyists Want U.S.- Saudi Ties Cloven

The ongoing effort to split the longstanding friendship between the United States and Saudi Arabia—which has existed despite the power of the Israeli lobby—has taken an ugly new turn.

In league with the major media, the Israeli lobby is trying to drive a wedge between the United States and its traditional ally, the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Washington Post has now emerged as a major player in the effort, lending its considerable clout to the public relations campaign.

On Jan. 18 the Post published a front-page story claiming that the Saudis may be on the verge of asking the United States to abandon its military presence in the kingdom.

Perhaps not by coincidence, the Post announcement came on the heels of a proclamation, touted several days earlier by the Post, that Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) had concluded that the time had come for the United States to withdraw from Saudi Arabia. Long a top voice for the Israeli lobby on Capitol Hill, Levin is also chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and his words mean a great deal in official Washington.

However, despite the prodding against the Saudis by Levin and the Post, Secretary of State Colin Powell announced that he has had “no discussion” with Saudi officials about the possibility of U.S. withdrawal. Responding to the Post, Powell said that “there is nothing in that story that warrants my attention at the moment, or Secretary [of Defense Donald] Rums feld’s.” A spokesman for President George Bush has said that he has no knowledge of any such plan for withdrawal.

As if to counter Powell’s forthright reaction, the Post followed up with a lead editorial on Jan. 20 asserting that “the administration must now recognize that Saudi political policies have become not just an unpleasant sideshow but a genuine menace to the United States. . . . The United States now must fashion a more complex policy toward Saudi Arabia and other Islamic countries, balancing the need for some engagement with the necessity of countering that hostile ideology. In the end, the departure of U.S. forces might just make that balance easier to strike.”

Some have suggested that perhaps the Post and the Israeli lobby are laying the groundwork for the use of Israel as a major military outpost for the United States—replacing Saudi Arabia. This would give the Israeli lobby new grounds for claiming that Israel is a “vital ally.”

The recent fusillade by the Post is not the first time that Bush and Powell have been ambushed by the media, particularly since the tragedy of Sept. 11 which launched a fervent push by Israel and its allies in the major media to spark a massive U.S. military attack against the Arab and Muslim worlds.

Informed observers perceive the Post story as simply another effort by the media to push President Bush and Powell away from their close working relationship with Saudi Arabia and other nations in the Arab and Muslim world and further into the Israeli camp.

While it is true that the Saudis have concerns about the U.S. military presence on their soil, the Post and other media have attempted to build upon the idea that the Saudi concerns are somehow a “sell-out to Osama bin Laden,” part of the ongoing Israeli-promoted theme that Saudi Arabia is less than a reliable ally.

On Jan. 21 American Free Press revealed that the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) of B’nai B’rith has been aggressively distributing to opinion-molders in the major media across the country a “white paper” on Saudi Arabia entitled The U.S.-Saudi Relationship which is nothing more than a propaganda screed designed to disrupt that relationship.

or how the U.S. wants them to be THE Iraqi opposition or how the
Turks have abused them.  What follows is a little insight into the
roles they've played for various big shots in the region.  This

The Kurds' Suffering is Rooted in Past Betrayals

The ordeal of nearly a million Kurds as they struggled to escape from
Iraq across freezing mountain passes last April aroused sympathy and
indignation around the world. Iraq's brutal suppression of the March
uprising by Kurds and Shi'i Arabs was the immediate cause of their
plight, but the Kurds' present agony is the culmination of a long
history of oppression, manipulation and betrayal. At one time or
another during the past 70 years, the European powers, Turkey, Iran,
Iraq, Israel, the US, and at times even the Kurds' own leaders have
all used the Kurdish people to further their own aims.

The modern Kurdish independence movement is itself the product of a
betrayal. In 1920, following World War I, the Allies and the defeated
Ottoman Empire signed the Treaty of Sevres, which provided for an
independent Kurdi
stan in the adjacent areas of Syria, Turkey, Iran and Iraq where 18 million Kurds were 
concentrated. Because of the opposition of Turkish nationalists and the indifference 
of the Western powers, the treaty was not enforce
d and the promise to the Kurdish people was never fulfilled. Since then, the Kurds' 
attempt to preserve a separate culture and obtain independence have been met with 
repression and bloody reprisals by governments that reg
ard the Kurds either as threats to their own survival or as pawns to be used against 
their neighbors.

Uprisings in the 1920s and 1930s by Kurdish nationalists led by Sheikh Ahmad of Barzan 
and those in later years led by his brother, Mustafa Barzani, were repeatedly crushed, 
often by the cooperative efforts of Iran, Turke
y and Iraq. After Iraq's revolution of 195 8 that ousted the monarchy, Barzani made 
peace with the new government and even took part in massacres of its Ba'athist 
opponents. But during subsequent changes of government, re
lations between Kurds and Iraqi leaders fluctuated between fighting and attempts at 
reconciliation. What complicated these relations was Iran's growing hostility to Iraq 
once it became a republic. After the overthrow of I
raq's King Faisal, the shah of Iran abandoned his former policy of cooperating with 
Baghdad against the Kurds and instead began using the Kurds as a means of weakening 
Iraq. During the 1960s, Iran joined with Israel to gi
ve financial, technical and military support to the Kurdish insurgents, with the aim 
of embroiling Iraq in domestic turmoil that would sap its military capabilities. At 
the same time, nobody wanted a Kurdish victory. Acco
rding to a news report in the Christian Science Monitor of Dec. 12, 1974, Iran's 
support for the Kurds was always just enough to prevent their defeat, never quite 
enough to enable them to attain their political objective
s.

There is no evidence that the US provided direct assistance to the
Kurds during these years. In fact, Nikki R. Keddie and Mark J.
Gasiorowski emphasize in their book Neither East Nor West (Yale 1990)
that the CIA and State Department were strongly opposed to any US
intervention on behalf of the Kurds. Israel, however, did play an
important role in keeping the Kurdish insurgency alive. In 1980,
Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin revealed that between 1965 and
1975 the Israeli government had provided the Kurds with money, arms
and instructors. Together, Iran and Israel set up a Kurdish
intelligence service, Parastin, and Israeli intelligence units were
active in Kurdish territory during these years, gathering information
on Iraqi forces. In 1972, American newspaper columnist Jack Anderson
reported that Israel was paying Barzani personally $50,000 a month.
Israel also supplied the Kurds with Soviet weapons it had captured
from Egypt and Syria, hoping at one point that Iraqi leaders would
believe the weapons had been supplied by the Soviets.

The reasons for Israel's cooperation with Iran to help the Kurds were
clear. The shah of Iran provided Israel with a continuous supply of
oil (in 1973 Iran refused to join the Arab oil embargo against the
West). By supporting the Kurds, Israel succeeded in tying down units
of the Iraqi army that in 1967 and 1973 might otherwise have joined
Egypt and Syria in fighting against Israel.

The Palestinian Vision of Peace

RAMALLAH  For the past 16 months, Israelis and Palestinians have been
locked in a catastrophic cycle of violence, a cycle which only promises more
bloodshed and fear. The cycle has led many to conclude that peace is
impossible, a myth borne out of ignorance of the Palestinian position. Now
is the time for the Palestinians to state clearly, and for the world to hear
clearly, the Palestinian vision.

But first, let me be very clear. I condemn the attacks carried out by
terrorist groups against Israeli civilians. These groups do not represent
the Palestinian people or their legitimate aspirations for freedom. They are
terrorist organizations, and I am determined to put an end to their
activities.

The Palestinian vision of peace is an independent and viable Palestinian
state on the territories occupied by Israel in 1967, living as an equal
neighbor alongside Israel with peace and security for both the Israeli and
Palestinian peoples. In 1988, the Palestine National Council adopted a
historic resolution calling for the implementation of applicable United
Nations resolutions, particularly, Resolutions 242 and 338. The Palestinians
recognized Israel's right to exist on 78 percent of historical Palestine
with the understanding that we would be allowed to live in freedom on the
remaining 22 percent, which has been under Israeli occupation since 1967.
Our commitment to that two-state solution remains unchanged, but
unfortunately, also remains unreciprocated.

We seek true independence and full sovereignty: the right to control our own
airspace, water resources and borders; to develop our own economy, to have
normal commercial relations with our neighbors, and to travel freely. In
short, we seek only what the free world now enjoys and only what Israel
insists on for itself: the right to control our own destiny and to take our
place among free nations.

In addition, we seek a fair and just solution to the plight of Palestinian
refugees who for 54 years have not been permitted to return to their homes.
We understand Israel's demographic concerns and understand that the right of
return of Palestinian refugees, a right guaranteed under international law
and United Nations Resolution 194, must be implemented in a way that takes
into account such concerns. However, just as we Palestinians must be
realistic with respect to Israel's demographic desires, Israelis too must be
realistic in understanding that there can be no solution to the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict if the legitimate rights of these innocent
civilians continue to be ignored. Left unresolved, the refugee issue has the
potential to undermine any permanent peace agreement between Palestinians
and Israelis. How is a Palestinian refugee to understand that his or her
right of return will not be honored but those of Kosovar Albanians, Afghans
and East Timorese have been?

There are those who claim that I am not a partner in peace. In response, I
say Israel's peace partner is, and always has been, the Palestinian people.
Peace is not a signed agreement between individuals  it is reconciliation
between peoples. Two peoples cannot reconcile when one demands control over
the other, when one refuses to treat the other as a partner in peace, when
one uses the logic of power rather than the power of logic. Israel has yet
to understand that it cannot have peace while denying justice. As long as
the occupation of Palestinian lands continues, as long as Palestinians are
denied freedom, then the path to the peace of the brave that I embarked
upon with my late partner Yitzhak Rabin, will be littered with obstacles.

The Palestinian people have been denied their freedom for far too long and
are the only people in the world still living under foreign occupation. How
is it possible that the entire world can tolerate this oppression,
discrimination and humiliation? The 1993 Oslo Accord, signed on the White
House lawn, promised the Palestinians freedom by May 1999. Instead, since
1993, the Palestinian people have endured a doubling of Israeli settlers,
expansion of illegal Israeli settlements on Palestinian land and increased
restrictions on freedom of movement. How do I convince my people that Israel
is serious about peace while over the past decade Israel intensified the
colonization of Palestinian land from which it was ostensibly negotiating a
withdrawal?

But no degree of oppression and no level of desperation can ever justify the
killing of innocent civilians. I condemn terrorism. I condemn the killing of
innocent civilians, whether they are Israeli, American or Palestinian;
whether they are killed by Palestinian extremists, Israeli settlers, or by
the Israeli government. But condemnations do not stop terrorism. To stop
terrorism, we must understand that terrorism is simply the symptom, not the
disease.

 I was a bit surprised to learn last month that I have an
FBI file. You have one,
 too.

 The FBI spent $8 million last year with a company called ChoicePoint Inc. to
 buy dossiers on almost all adults who live in the United States. ChoicePoint,
 formerly a part of credit-reporting giant Equifax, is a publicly-held database
 firm with a market value of $2.25 billion, based in Alpharetta, Ga.

 Using our Social Security numbers as a key personal identifier, ChoicePoint
 compiles dossiers on citizens from credit reports, and from public records
 such as court files, property tax documents, business incorporations, and
 professional license applications. ChoicePoint bundles the information and
 resells it to business and government clients. The FBI is apparently such a
 good customer that they get their own website to access the database.

 The Wall Street Journal reported on the FBI's use of this database on April
 13. After reading the article, I e-mailed ChoicePoint CEO Derek Smith asking
 to see the dossiers on my family. A couple weeks later, after paying $20
 apiece for the privilege, I received by mail a packet of more than 60 pages of
 computer print-outs from ChoicePoint containing information about myself and
 my wife.

 Sixty pages seemed like a lot of information for one family. Looking through
 the first few pages of my dossier I saw that my credit card companies gave
 ChoicePoint my current address, plus my previous two addresses. My town
 gave them information about my house: when I bought it, how much I paid for
 it, and my property taxes. They even had the square footage for the house,
 which I've been curious to know ever since we moved in. Since my wife and I
 have the same phone number in the White Pages, ChoicePoint correctly
 deduced that she and I are related.

 The deeper I dove into my dossier, however, the weirder things got. A lot of
 misleading information is included, perhaps because my name is a common
 one. ChoicePoint noted, for example, that I might have been previously
 married to some lady named Mary, but that I had died in 1976. Yikes! They
 did a search of Texas criminal records and found nothing under my name.
 However, the report suggested a further search under names such as Ricky
 Smith and Rickie Smith because there were some bad guys in jail under
 these names. ChoicePoint touted me as a real estate agent in my town. They
 also thought I might be involved in more than 30 small businesses around the
 country simply because the name Richard Smith appears as a company
 officer.

 On my wife's dossier I learned with amazement that she had a son named
 Kyle three years before we met. It was unclear from the report how
 ChoicePoint made this connection and where Kyle is today. Pretty funny how
 they missed our two real daughters. They did list one of my daughters as a
 neighbor, but she actually hasn't lived at home for the last eight years since she
 went away to college.

 Memo to the FBI: The ChoicePoint dossier for my household contains more
 misinformation than correct information. I'm not sure how someone looking
 over these reports could use them in any meaningful way without already
 knowing a good deal about myself and my wife.

 After seeing these reports, I wanted to opt-out. Guess what? Just as with
 credit reporting agencies, you can't. They choose to have a relationship with
 you, but you have no choice in your relationship with them. In my original
 e-mail message to the ChoicePoint CEO, I asked about opting out. I got a
 nice letter back from the ChoicePoint chief privacy officer saying No. Here
 was the reason given:

 Our individual reference products are used by legitimate businesses and
 government agencies to identify and locate individuals to make society a safer
 place, including detecting and preventing fraud, locating and apprehending
 fugitives, and finding missing children and reuniting them with their families.
 Given these uses and the adverse effect opt-out would have on our ability to
 provide quality information for these decisions that matter, I am unable to
 remove your information from these

BFWhich faction of the bloodlines pays you, Mr. Saba, to put this crap out?  I
can spot one of theirs from a hundred miles away.
In any case, I do not consider Springmeier my hero, but I do believe he has
uncovered information that is very damaging to the hidden blood-lines, mixed
together with his own personal biases.  This is the unpardonable sin under the
New World Order and like Cooper he stepped out of line.

Kremlin `faked' terrorist attacks on apartments

Intensifying his battle with the Kremlin, the Russian oligarch Boris
Berezovsky said on Thursday that he was just weeks away from laying out
documentary evidence that Russia's security services were involved in
apartment house explosions in September 1999 that killed more than 300
people.

In an interview in London, he said his investigation of the bombings _
which were blamed on separatists in Chechnya and triggered a full-scale
invasion of that rebellious republic _ was the reason Nikolai Patrushev,
Russia's intelligence chief, accused him last week of providing financial
support to Chechen ``terrorists''.

Mr Berezovsky said his evidence ``is no less than the evidence the
United States had that Osama bin Laden was responsible for the World
Trade Center attack''.

He said the key to his case was the discovery in late September 1999 that
Russia's security services had placed what appeared to be a large bomb
in an apartment in Ryazan, 115 miles southeast of Moscow.

When residents discovered the bomb and called the police, the Federal
Security Service, or FSB, issued a public apology and asserted that the
``explosives'' were actually bags of sugar tied together with wires and a
detonator, a dummy used as part of a security exercise.

A number of Russian legislators called for an independent investigation
of the bombings and the actions of the security service in Ryazan, but in
March 2000 parliament defeated a motion to open an inquiry. Vladimir
Putin, a former head of the FSB, won the presidential election the same
month. Mr Patrushev succeeded him at the security service.

In the jaded politics of today's Russia, Mr Berezovsky's claims have been
treated with as much scepticism as the counter-claims of Mr Patrushev
and the security service. The fact that the charges emerged as Mr
Berezovsky was losing another battle to retain control of the independent
TV6 television channel added to that scepticism.

Yet the unsolved explosions that brought terror to Russia and incited
Russians against Chechens and other ethnic groups from the Caucasus
stand as an enduring and troubling mystery of the Chechen conflict.

Though dozens of arrests were made in the bombings, no one has been
convicted of direct complicity. Moreover, the bombings laid the
groundwork for the furious military campaign against Chechnya and for
the political rise of Mr Putin, then the prime minister, whose relentless
prosecution of the war garnered a surge of popular support that
propelled him into the presidency.

Mr Berezovsky said on Thursday that he had no evidence that Mr Putin
had personal knowledge of any involvement by security services in the
apartment bombings, but he said Mr Patrushev did.

``I don't have any facts today that Putin is involved personally,'' he
said. ``I have facts that the chief of the FSB is involved in that, and
other people from the FSB are involved.''

While he said the evidence implicated Mr Patrushev, ``I don't have the
answer as to who gave the order _ whether it was Putin, Patrushev or
someone else.''

The resurrection of the case highlights the tenacity of Mr Berezovsky, the
consummate Kremlin insider in the era of former president Boris Yeltsin.
From exile in London, where he is fighting legal battles over his holdings
and an arrest warrant issued last autumn, he continues to strike at Mr
Putin in the name of liberal and democratic causes, even when many
liberals shun him.

And in the end, there is the question of whether Mr Berezovsky is simply
trying to orchestrate a political crisis for Mr Putin to win political
asylum in Britain as a means to protect permanently the wealth he carved
out of Russia in the early days, when the pickings were easy.

Mr Berezovsky responded to this question by saying: ``You won't have to
wait long'' to judge the merit of his case. He would not discuss whether
he planned to seek asylum, but said he would be in danger if he returned
to Russia.

``I don't want to tell you that I expect that they would kill me,'' he
said. ``I am not able to say that. But I cannot exclude anything.''

Mr Berezovsky works these days out of a suite of offices on fashionable
Savile Row, where he manages a business empire that is as hard to define
as it is to measure in value. But over the last decade, he is believed to
have controlled major stakes in Russian automobile enterprises, oil and
aluminum companies, Aeroflot and ORT, the state television combine, from
which he was ejected after Mr Putin became president.

Last week, after Mr Berezovsky lost a battle to keep TV6 on the air with a
crew of journalists who had fled the independent NTV network, the security
director, Mr Patrushev, surprised him with a new assault.

Yes but whose English - American English?

That Mum stuff is so stupid - the English Mum.these are Muslims who
isolate themselves somewhat.

Might add my sister started this Nippon News paper over there which was
only a six page news paper at the time and worked with the Philipino
raising money for books.

In gratitude two huge paintings were given to my sister and brother in
law when they left (he was CO at Clark Field).the one painting I
have, of my sister - they gave her a Philipino look and put a flower in
her hair.

And this story somehow does not ring true.

Something was building up in the Philipines long ago for before my
sister left suddenly theyhad to have armed guards to go to Manila - for

Union speech was anonymously messengered to me just hours ago. While it
is an obvious early draft, it appears to have been written -- or even
improvised -- by the president himself. Here is a transcript of the

carry painful memories with us. But some have endured more pain than

Linda's husband Ken embodies what it means to be an American. Ken was
one of the heroic figures that led the charge out just as everything

President George W. Bush is eager to distance himself from Enron these
days

Since Enron's bankruptcy has done thousands of employees out of their life
savings, The Nation has revived an article from 1994 about how W. used his
family name some years earlier to try to persuade the government of Argentina
to let Enron build a pipeline through that country. The incident was also
reported two years ago in Mother Jones.

In 1988, just after his father had been elected president, the younger Bush
called Argentine Minister of Public Works and Services Rodolfo Terragno, who
later described the conversation to Nation editor David Corn. At the time,
the Argentine government was discussing the possibility of building a
pipeline through the country to carry natural gas to Chile. Enron wanted to
build the pipeline, but was annoying Terragno with requests to buy natural
gas from Argentina's state-run gas company at cut-rate prices, and the
proposal Enron had written was shoddy and incomplete. Terragno put them
off.

Terragno's statements show that W.'s friendship with former Enron CEO Ken Lay
is only the tip of the iceberg of the Bush family's relationship with Enron.
They also show that the family's ties to the energy industry are so
far-reaching that much of the truth about them lies outside the United
States.

Introduction

At the end of the millenium the western societies are marked by numerous opposite developments, which hardly can be reduced to a common denominator. Among them are modernization processes, globalization on the one hand and the return of nationalism or better antimodern demarcation on the other hand. In particular the relationship of the various social processes of the secularization in politics and society and religions and religiosity bear a lot of tension. In the case of Germany, neo-fascistic groups increasingly used the political vacuum in the formerly communist governed parts of the country, regrouped and have now begun to rephrase their ideological background and advocate a pseudo/pagan-religious system formulated in the beginning of the century.

In this short paper I will try to portray the history of this pseudo-religious system and look into whether it can be classed as a form of civil religion.

To summon the paper I will try to establish a few thoughts as to how the apparent problems of disorientation and the apparent lack of information can be solved.

The history of the neo-pagan pseudo religious system of Germany´s National Socialist Party NSDAP

On April 6th, 1919, in Bavaria, left wing socialists and anarchists proclaimed the Bavarian Soviet Republic. The brains of the revolution were a group of writers who had little idea of administration. The counter-revolutionary forces, the whites, composed of various groups of decommissioned soldiers known as "Freikorps", equipped and financed by the mysterious "Thule Society", defeated the Bavarian Soviet within a matter of weeks. Many other decommissioned soldiers waited out the turbulence in barracks, Pfc. Adolf Hitler among them. After Eisner´s People´s Republic of Bavaria collapsed in 1919, Hitler¨s superiors put him to work in the post revolution investigating commission. He was ordered to attend special anticommunist training courses and seminars, which were financed by the Reichswehr administration and by private donors from the Thule Society.

Back in 1912, several German occultists with radical anti-Semitic inclinations decided to form a "magic" lodge, which they named the Order of Teutons. The main founders were Theodor Fritsch, a publisher of an anti-Semitic journal; Philipp Stauff, pupil of the racist Guido von List, and Hermann Pohl, the order¨s chancellor. The Order of Teutons was organized along the lines of the Free Masons or the Rosicrucians, having differing degrees of initiation, only persons who could fully document that they were of pure "Aryan" ancestry were allowed to join. In 1915, a Rudolf Glauer, who held a Turkish passport and who had made contact with Rosicrucians in Turkey and practiced Sufi meditation, joined Pohl. Glauer also was an amateur in astrology and an admirer of Lanz von Liebenfels and Guido von List, both outspoken anti-Semitic¿s. While staying in Turkey Glauer had changed his name to Rudolf Freiherr von Sebottendorf.

He became the Grand Master of the Bavarian Order and with Pohl¨s approval he founded the Thule Society in 1918. The journalist Karl Harrer was given the job of founding a political "worker circle". He realized that the workers would reject any program that was presented to them by a member of the conservative "privileged" class. Harrer knew that the mechanic Anton Drexler, who was working for the railroads, was a well-known anti-Semite, chauvinist and proletarian. With Drexler as nominal chairman, Harrer founded the German Workers Party (DAP Deutsche Arbeiter Partei) in January 1919.

The DAP was only one of many associations founded and controlled by the "Thule Gesellschaft" (Thule Society). The Thule Society was the "mother" to the German Socialist Party, led by Julius Streicher, and the right-wing radical Oberland Freikorps (Oberland Free Corps). Hitler became the most prominent personality in the party. He caused Harrer to drop out and he pushed Drexler, the nominal chairman, to the sidelines. He filled key positions with his own friends from the Thule Society and the Army. During the summer of 1920, upon his suggestion, the party was renamed the National Socialist German Worker Party (NSDAP). The new name was intended to equally attract nationalists and proletarians. To go along with the new name his mass movement also required a flag with a powerful symbol. Among many designs under consideration, Hitler picked the one suggested by Thule-member Dr. Krohn: a red cloth with a white circle in the middle containing a black swastika.

Actually the Swastika is the oldest cross and emblem in the world. To this day it is widely used as a Hinduist/Buddhist idol in Asia and earlier it has been found in ancient Rome, excavations in Grecian cities, on Chinese coins dated 315 BC and in North America the Indian

The alleged kidnapper "had made a number of foreign calls and included among the numbers that he had called in India were numbers of persons who occupied certain important positions inside the Indian government," Sattar told a news conference in Berlin.

"That is all we know. We are not alleging that this person was working in complicity with somebody in India. But I think this fact should be known to all persons interested," he said after talks with German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer.

Sattar was referring to Mubarak Ali Shah Gilani, leader of the radical Islamic group, Jamaat al-Fuqra, who a police official said was brought to Karachi for interrogation on Wednesday. The suspect has said he is not involved in the kidnapping.

Investigators say Pearl, who is based in Bombay for the Wall Street Journal, met Gilani before he disappeared and police have detained and questioned a number of people close to the religious leader and his group. "From this telephone number of Mubarak Shah several calls were made to foreign numbers, and included in this list are three prominent Indian personalities," Sattar said.

The minister said police had obtained the information from the itemised bill of mobile telephone calls.

Yunno, I don't have a PHD in nuclear physics but I did go to the Local Patent
Library in search of the truth, ordering all 12 pages of the patent and
I offer my point of view on my findings. (your local patent library will have it
too...)

First, the capabilities as listed in the previous post were not exadurations or
mis-statements at all (as I somewhat had presumed), but most are
actually spelled out with amazing clarity and suprising audacity in the patent.
Some of the more truely heinous and utterly attrocious capabilities
of the devices as listed in the patent are quoted below:

Surveys of the global scope could be realized because the
earth's natural magnetic field could be significantly altered =:o

Besides actually changing the molecular composition of an atmospheric

presence. :(

3) Page 12 Left Column line 15-28

Thus, this invention provides the ability to put unprecedented amounts of
power in the earth's atmospher at strategic locations, and to maintain
the power injection level ... in a manner far more precise and better controlled
than heretofore accomplished by prior art, particularly by the
detonation of nuclear devices of various yields at various altitudes...

I don't even want to know what the 'prior art' is.

It is clear from his text, that he references Alaska specifically and from the
comparison of the HAARP homepage, the site and location are
undeniable.

The patent states a 1 gigawatt MHD power source tapped from the natural
gas fields in Alaska. Forget global warming, this generator alone
would bring the equivalent of 1x full sun tropical exposure (1350 watts/meter)
to a square kilometer which nominally is covered by ice and rarely
sees the sun rise above 10 degrees over the horizon...

In comparison with the statements in patent, the HAARP homepage statement of purpose 
is an insult.

One interesting fact that I did derive from the patent which may be of interest to the 
readers of this list is the repeated reference to earth
magnetic field lines as if they were sharply discontinuous and in some ways special:

The actual locations at which field lines intersect the earth's surface is documented 
and readily ascertainable by those skilled in the art.

Page 4 Right Column Line 41:

Plasma is naturally present along these field lines.

Somehow, this begs the questions that do the magnetic surveys put out ignore these 
anomalies, and, perhaps more importantly has anyone ever
located one of these using magnetometer/dip-meter/compass...

This, in itself, would be the find of the century if there were a stable 100-1000x 
field gradient within a small area.

On another astonishingly unbelievable, but true, note discovered while researching 
this patent I came across:

Israel jails 600 reserve soldiers in crackdown on draft dodging

ISRAEL has jailed 600 reserve soldiers in an attempt to halt a growing
rebellion against military service in the West Bank and Gaza Strip,
where the six-month-old Palestinian intifada has claimed the lives of
several reservists and shows signs of spiralling out of control.

At least 2,500 reservists have gone absent without leave, while
thousands of others have become grey conscientious objectors, meaning
that they have fabricated medical or personal reasons why they should
not be called up for duty.

Under Israeli law, every male is required to do three years of national
service between the ages of 18 and 21, followed by a liability for
reserve duty every year - usually about 30 days - until they are between
40 and 50. They make up a 400,000-strong army which supports the regular
force of 200,000 conscripts and professional soldiers.

Most of the reservists have little sympathy with the settlers who
justify occupation of the territories seized from the Arabs by Israel in
the 1967 Six-Day war on religious grounds, claiming that the settlements
are part of biblical Israel. Many of the mostly secular reservists'
objections have a moral and political basis.

The crisis comes at a time when settlement leaders are looking to expand
their neighbourhoods, partly in response to terrorist attacks. Last
week's shootings and bombings will spur settlers to push for wider
development on occupied territory.

Ehud Sprinzak, an academic specialising in politics, said: Since Sharon
came to power many plans for new settlements have been submitted and the
settlers have found a sympathetic ear. Of course, the issue of reserve
soldiers protecting the new settlements is going to be problematic.

Independent peace monitoring groups say that the number of reservists
refusing service has escalated sharply as the intifada has intensified.
Several reservist soldiers have been killed and, in the past few weeks,
settlements in the Gaza Strip area have come under regular mortar attack
for the first time. Clashes that came after a sniper attack in the West
Bank town of Hebron - which left an 11-month-old baby dead - and a
series of bomb blasts last week have underlined the risks that they
face.

Ishai Menuchim, a reservist tank commander and leader of Yesh Gvuel
(There is a Limit), an independent pressure group, said: The reservists
do not care about the territories. Many are in their thirties and
forties, they have families and care more about their businesses or
studies.

So they are not willing to pay the price and risk their lives for
something they don't believe in. This is a big problem for the army
because it will affect their operations. The army needs to understand
that fewer and fewer people are willing to do their dirty work in the
territories.

The issue is a divisive one in Israeli society because many Orthodox
students win exemption from military service on the grounds that they
must put their religious studies first. The problem is particularly
pressing now as reservists are being brought in to replace regular
soldiers who are due for a rest at the end of a four-month tour of duty.
Some senior army officers believe that jailing draft dodgers could
exacerbate the situation by uniting opposition to the draft and even
spurring greater numbers to avoid duty.

One battalion commander said: This may lead to a terrible crisis. More
draft dodgers means fewer soldiers for the missions. The workload will
increase, not to mention the level of danger. I do not want my men to
feel like suckers.

The army is also having to deal with thousands of petitions from parents
who do not want their sons to do their national service in the occupied
territories. Many have telephoned commanding officers begging them to
find safe desk jobs for their sons.

Ruth Hiller, whose 19-year-old son is a conscientious objector, has gone
to the supreme court to prevent her him from being drafted. The mother
of six says the army has attempted to buy her son Yinnon off by offering
him a job in a hospital.

It has been 130 days since September 11th. We have heard many debates,
accusations, and arguments about the genesis of the attacks. Every major
news agency, and every talking head with a whisper of breath in their
lungs, has weighed in. We have been told how we should respond. We have
been told how we should feel. We have been told how we can help. In all
that time, however, something essential has been missing.

We have yet to be told how such a thing was allowed to happen in the
first place.

It is a curious phenomenon. Whenever anything occurs in this country, be
it a shark attack or the disappearance of a Capitol Hill intern, the
media drumbeat has always played the same tune: Why? Why? Why did this
happen? This Greek chorus has fallen silent in the weeks since the
Towers came down. Rather than question the genesis of our woe, we have
been afforded endless observations about how we have and should react.
There is no looking back. There are no answers.

Thousands of Americans died on September 11th, and thousands of Afghan
civilians have joined them in the dust in the days since. Millions, nay,
billions worldwide have been affected. American soldiers stand in peril
to defend our freedom, or so we are told. Yet we are afforded no
answers, no understanding, no succor. All we have are threads of data
flapping in the winds of battle and response. We deserve better.

The time has come to take those threads and weave them together as best
we can.

It cannot be denied that the attacks of September 11th represent the
most spectacular Intelligence failure in the history of the nation. The
planning required to pull off such an audacious attack likely was years
in the making, formulated by people all across the planet. Somehow,
these people managed to locate and exploit a security loophole left by
the mighty FBI, CIA and NSA, and flew four deadly bombs laden with fuel
and humanity right through it.

There are two possible explanations for this astounding lapse.

The first is that, despite all the funding they are provided by our tax
dollars, despite all the human and technological resources at their
disposal, these agencies failed utterly to glean even a whiff of menace.
If this proves to be the case, every individual employed by these
agencies should be fired with prejudice. The buildings that house them
should be razed to the ground, and the rubble burned. The earth upon
which they sat should be salted, so nothing will ever grow there again.

If this proves to be the case, these agencies should be torn down brick
by brick and built anew for the sake of our safety. They let it happen
through negligence, ergo they should cease to exist, and a new cadre
should be brought in who can be trusted to defend the interests and
security of this country. These axioms are being applied in Afghanistan;
they should be applied right here at home.

The other possibility is far more sinister, and smacks of all the bleak
realities we have become far too familiar and comfortable with. The
other possibility is that the September 11th attacks happened because
powerful men were pursuing an agenda of self-interest, in defiance of
prudence and security, and their very presence in the equation created
the opening for the attack.

It has been widely reported that 13 of the 19 terrorists who
commandeered the aircraft on September 11th were from Saudi Arabia, and
that some 80% of all Al Qaeda recruits come from that oil-rich nation.
It stands to reason, therefore, that American Intelligence agencies
would have a vested interest in paying a great deal of attention to
Saudi Arabia. Somehow, however, these terrorists managed to elude notice
until they appeared in the blue New York sky.

American security concerns overseas fall primarily within the bailiwick
of the Central Intelligence Agency. This agency was run in the 1970s by
none other than George Herbert Walker Bush, father of the sitting
Commander in Chief and a former President himself. Bush Sr. ranks among
the most venerated members of the Old Guard from the Nixon and Reagan
days, and commands the loyalty of government officials past and present.
Because of his long years in politics, Bush Sr. also enjoys a vast array
of business connections. This is common knowledge, available in any
updated high school history textbook.

Since his departure from the political scene, however, the activities of
Bush Sr. have not been paid much attention by the national media.

MANY VOICES on Wall Street 
have professed bafflement at the sudden collapse of Enron 
(ENRNQ). According to the 
many investment bankers and trading partners who did business with the company, 
the commercial banks that lent it money, and the securities analysts who 
followed it, the accounting maneuvers Enron allegedly used to inflate its 
profits and hide its debts were so complex and so hidden from view that no one 
could have foreseen the outcome. 
It turns out, however, that some of the biggest names in American finance 
were active participants in Enron's strategy. SmartMoney.com has obtained a 
number of financial documents and partnership records related to LJM2 
Co-Investment partnership, one of the key entities relied on by Enron. The 
documents  four books altogether measuring more than two inches high  reveal 
that a virtual Who's Who of financial institutions invested in the $394 million 
fund established in 1999 by former Enron Chief Financial Officer Andrew Fastow. 
The documents provide a breakout of the estimated rates of return on the more 
than a dozen investments made by LJM2. They even offer an explanation for how 
those mysterious Raptors worked  the subsidiaries LJM2 established to carry on 
hedging activities with Enron. We're making selections from the documents 
available for download in PDF format. 
The documents make one thing clear: LJM2 was anything but an arm's-length 
entity for Enron  as it would've had to be for Enron's accounting treatment of 
it to have been legitimate. "The Partnership expects that Enron will be the 
Partnership's primary source of investment opportunities and that the 
Partnership will co-invest with Enron," according to one document. As the 
documents state, the partnership was created and managed by then-CFO Fastow and 
was "focused on acquiring energy and communications assets primarily owned by 
Enron." And while Jeffrey Skilling, Enron's former chief executive who suddenly 
resigned last August, told the New York Times in December that he didn't have

meeting on Oct. 26, 2000. 
Some highlights from the documents: 
"LJM Rationale": LJM2 was formed in October 1999 with the stated goal

return for its limited-partner investors. Why focus on Enron assets? The 
documents explain that some of those assets were diluting Enron's earnings and 
harming the ratios on which its credit ratings were based. It wanted to 
"deconsolidate" those assets and "create structures which accelerate projected 
earnings and cash flows." 
A selling point to potential investors in LJM2: "The Partnership 
expects to benefit from having the opportunity to invest in Enron-generated

Holyrood commentary: Now that the Tories have admitted to 
having Masons on the Mound, the rest of the brotherhood should declare 
themselves, says Iain Macwhirter

So now we know what they get up to on the Mound. They're all 
poncing around in aprons with their trousers rolled up and their left breasts 
exposed. The revelation that up to a third of the Scottish Tory MSPs are 
Freemasons -- according to the Tory spokesman Alex Johnstone MSP -- rather 
upstaged Iain Duncan Smith's Scottish visit. Mind you, since the Tory leader had 
provoked confusion over the party's commitment to free personal care, perhaps 
upstaging was the best thing that could happen to him. 
So far this has only been a Tory scandal, largely because the other parties 
-- even the SNP, who raised the matter -- have been curiously reluctant to equal 
the Tories' openness. Well, I for one think we should be told. All the parties 
should urge Masonic MSPs to declare themselves. 
The votes-for-aprons affair may be faintly absurd, but it is not 
insignificant. The fact that a secret, sexist and sectarian cult is operating 
within the Scottish parliament is pretty shocking to those of us who have little 
experience of the dark side of Scottish political culture. Most people these 
days think Freemasonry is the kind of thing that falls through Edinburgh 
restaurants in a gale. The public should know exactly who they are voting for at 
elections. It has taken decades to drive the Masonic networks (partially) out of 
the police and judiciary; they should not be allowed to flourish in parliament. 
Of course, we're told that the Freemasons are no longer a secret brotherhood, 
but a brotherhood with secrets. A harmless pastime; charitable; the ultimate 
men's group. But any way you look at it, the Freemasons are, first and foremost, 
the ultimate clique. Masonry is the apotheosis of cronyism. It is a conspiracy 
against the Scottish parliament's values of transparency, openness and 
accountability. The aims of the brotherhood are inimical to those of the 
parliament and, like the Militant Tendency in Labour, they should be exposed . 
I don't know how many Masons are among the political press corps in the 
Lawnmarket, but I have my suspicions. If MSPs are to register their membership 
of such cults, and I believe they should, I hope that the rule would apply 
equally to journalists. Masonic lodges used to be very active in Westminster, as 
I once learned once to my cost. The lobby in Westminster is believed by many to 
have been based originally on a Masonic order. The lodge still operates, though 
it has been usurped by the even more sinister brotherhood of spin. 

No doubt I'll be found in a gutter in the Lawnmarket with a silken noose 
around my neck for saying offensive things about those good, charitable souls.

penalties with which Masons were threatened if they broke the lodge code. We're 
assured that all that kind of thing is history and that Masons are a cuddly 
conspiracy these days -- shiny, happy people holding hands. They've even got 
their own PR company trying to improve the image. Well, if so, let's hear how 
many Masons in Scotland are women, how many are Catholic or black. Until the 
brotherhood is truly open, it should be closed down. 
The Masons on the Mound affair is a classic example of the kind of story that 
fills a vacuum when there is no real politics going on. The high spot of last 
week's business was a debate on fur farming, even though there are no fur farms 
in Scotland. The SNP also revealed that most of the legislation passed by the 
Scottish parliament is in fact written by Westminster under the so-called Sewell 
motions. But perhaps we should be glad that little has being going on in the 
Scottish parliament. It's a chance to do a bit of housekeeping in the 
institution. Clearing out the dark recesses. Lifting the odd stone. 
Meanwhile, the Scottish Executive is keeping its head down. Jack McConnell is 
proving to be a master of lowering expectations. The political strategy seems to 
be to keep as low a profile as possible, like the brotherhood, and hope that 
everyone forgets about the Scottish government altogether. The Euro 2008 
championships have been kicked into touch; the prisons review has been shelved; 
the 15-year transport policy quietly laid to rest. Wendy Alexander has been told 
to go away and open motorways in Glasgow -- the ultimate humiliation for the 
radical voice of modernity in the Scottish Cabinet. You can almost hear them 
saying: 'That'll learn hur.' 
It seems that Jack McConnell believes the parliament has acquired such a bad 
image it should remain in self-imposed obscurity for a while until it's learned

There was something almost pathetic about George W. Bush's attempt to
make his fight against terrorism akin to the fight against the Nazis.

In his State of the Union address, he evoked the comparison when he said
that North Korea, Iran, Iraq, and their terrorist allies constitute an axis of evil.

That's a big stretch.

North Korea and Iran have both showed signs of opening up to the West over
the last four years. Diplomatic efforts could bring them even closer to a
rapprochement. Bluster and stigmatas will only alienate them.

(By the way, Bush could have used a fact-checker. He said that an unelected
few repress the Iranian people's hope for freedom. Check your almanac,
George. Iran's President Mohammad Khatami, a moderate reformist, was
elected in 1997 and reelected last June.)

What's more, the idea that North Korea, Iran, and Iraq are somehow working
together to take over the world as Germany, Italy, and Japan did is laughable.
Iran and Iraq hate each other and waged a devastating war against each
other in the 1980s--back when the United States was supporting Saddam
Hussein.

There is no evidence today that they are allied together or with North Korea.

So Bush was falling on his axis when he tried to make that claim.

He also hyped the threat against the United States when he said, Freedom
is at risk. As horrific as the attacks of September 11 were, freedom was
never at risk and the existence of the United States was never in peril.
Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda did commit an unspeakably grotesque
crime when they killed thousands of Americans, but they never posed a threat
to the survival of this country. During World War II, the survival of the free
world was at stake, as were the lives of millions of innocent people.

Today, the terrorists may be able to carry out a few individual acts of horror,
but they do not hold the balance of freedom in their hands.

Bush is exaggerating the risk for several reasons.

First, it solves his existential dilemma. Before September 11, he was the
most immature 55-year-old in the country, with little clear idea of why he
became President. The attacks gave meaning to his life, and the graver he
makes them out to be, the more important his role.

Second, by magnifying the threats, he is able to play to the traditional
Republican strength in the polls, since the American public has more
confidence in the Republicans to defend the nation.

Third, it allows him to expand the Pentagon budget to unseen heights. My
budget includes the largest increase in defense spending in two decades,
because while the price of freedom and security is high, it is never too high,
he said. Whatever it costs to defend our country, we will pay it. The
enormous Pentagon budget not only satisfies Pentagon contractors, it
blackmails Democrats, who might want to spend on some urgently needed
social programs. Said Bush: Our budget will run a deficit that will be small
and short term so long as Congress restrains spending and acts in a fiscally
responsible way.

Note that Bush views himself as unfettered by Congress and the Constitution
to wage his worldwide campaign against terrorists and regimes that sponsor
terrorism. In the first sentence of his address, he declared, Our nation is at
war, but he never asked for or received a formal declaration of war from
Congress.

And when Congress gave him authorization to use force in September, it
said that such use of force had to be limited to individuals, groups, or nations
connected to the attacks of September 11. Congress did not give him carte
blanche to wage war against any and all terrorists everywhere, or against
regimes that seek chemical, biological, or nuclear weapons.

He has taken that power unto himself, as he enunciates the Bush doctrine of
permanent war.

It's a war that won't risk global annihilation, like World War II or the Cold War
did. That is some solace. A common danger is erasing old rivalries.
America is working with Russia, China, and India in ways we have before to
achieve peace and prosperity, he said. The bouquet to China was well-
thrown, since Bush's missile defense plans, reiterated in his speech, look
ominous to Beijing.

But Bush's permanent war will likely will likely sow seeds of discord among
our European allies and stir pots of resentment throughout the Islamic world.

It will likely drain our Treasury of much-needed funds for rebuilding schools,
ending poverty and homelessness, and providing universal health care.

And it will likely result in the U.S. military killing tens of thousands of Third
World civilians, if not more.

CAPULALPAN, Mexico (Jan. 30) - In this one-telephone village in the hills of
Mexico's Oaxaca state, corn grows out of cracks in the sidewalks, along
roadsides and anywhere else it can find soil.

That may sound like a farmer's utopia, but for people in Capulalpan and a
host of other mountain settlements where corn is a staple of every family's
diet, it is more like an aberration of nature.

Local and foreign scientists have concluded the mysterious, ubiquitous corn
variety is genetically modified, and illegal.

The presence of the modified corn amid local corn varieties is not yet
alarming, but scientists warn it could usurp the hardier Oaxaca corn quickly
unless it is stopped soon.

Transgenic strains were found in 15 of 22 communities in these hills and in 3
to 10 percent of plants in the fields sampled.

''What's frightening is how fast it has spread,'' said Yolanda Lara,
spokeswoman for Oaxaca's non-governmental Rural Development Agency. ''The
government must put a stop to this.''

Mexicans, who see their country as the birthplace of the centuries-old maize
crop, are appalled by the discovery of genetically modified corn in their
most far-flung highlands.

And speculation that the modified corn reached their lands in government
trucks carrying subsidized kernels to community stores has fired that outrage
still further.

GOVERNMENT UNDER FIRE

Cultivating genetically modified corn has been prohibited in Mexico since
1998, although it is imported from the United States for human consumption.

Village elders for whom corn is a way of life in the Oaxaca highlands first
raised the alarm that a wild strain of corn was invading their native or
so-called ''Creole'' maize.

''This corn is going to waste away our creoles,'' said Lino Martinez, the
81-year-old farmer of a small corn plot in nearby La Trinidad, perched on a
steep mountainside with cornfields snaking up and down its slopes.

In La Trinidad, even the dentist's office has a corn patch for a backyard.

Biologists used DNA-testing on the ''wild'' corn and discovered that it was
genetically modified. The University of California at Berkeley confirmed
local findings in November, prompting demands that the Mexican government
halt imports of transgenic corn.

With the presence of alien corn confirmed, activists are now going after its
presumed source.

Residents in Capulalpan and a string of surrounding villages claim the corn
arrived on government trucks dispensing low-cost basic food items to people
in the area, where almost every house is flanked by a cornfield.

''Wherever those kernels fell, off the backs of the trucks, from bags carried
from the store, the corn would grow,'' said Olga Toro Maldonada, 39, who
cultivates corn in her backyard to help feed her six children.

''It even grows out of the concrete.''

She claims the corn has been in the village for several years and is readily
available at the local government store. Locals say the modified corn kernels
are larger, differently colored and don't taste as sweet as native varieties.

SUSCEPTIBLE TO PLAGUE

Maldonada began planting the kernels herself three years ago, curious to see
how they would grow. She says at least five other families in Capulalpan
followed suit.

The results were remarkable, at first.

''The first crop was marvelous, yielding two or three head of corn per plant
instead of one,'' said Maldonada as she walked through her tiny corn patch,
pointing out varieties of maize she said were Creole, genetically modified
and mixed.

It takes between four and five head of corn to create one kilogram of maize
for tortillas, the nation's main staple food, so the new corn strain at first
seemed to be a godsend.

But the windfall soured as Maldonada noticed that while the corn grew
anywhere and with very little water, it was highly susceptible to plague once
ripe.

She only stopped harvesting the maize after being told it was genetically
modified and still an unknown quantity in the science world, where the impact
of transgenics on the environment is unclear.

Scientists and environmentalists say they are concerned the transgenic maize
could usurp the Creole variety, which has become largely resistant to local
plagues and diseases.

Officials at the government's basic foods distribution program, Diconsa,
which sells subsidized corn to 23,000 stores nationwide, deny claims they
distribute the corn and say their maize is grown locally or bought from local
distributors.
