Re: Interesting new cipher patent

2002-02-28 Thread Eugene Leitl

A question: assuming, you have a class of random number generators with
lots of internal state (Lots: like 10^6 bits) Let's say the evolution
through state space of that generator is provably reversible (or nearly
reversible), and that the Hamiltonian of the system is stochastic (system
evolution is a randomwalk in state space) The result is a pseudorandom
number generator with a ridiculously long periode, and good randomness of
output, obviously A simple cypher based on it would exchange the
pseudorandom generator state (the key) through a secure channel,
similiarly to a one time pad

Can someone point me towards papers describing construction of above
generators? I'm thinking about reversible cellular automata (is Gutowitz
the only guy who did CA crypto?) or automata networks with changing
connection geometry (ie the connection is also encoded in the state and
changes with each iteration) with the number of total iterations estimated
from lightcone considerations

Point of this:

* algorithmic construction of PRNGs with provable properties
* lots of internal state, hence bit leakage even for a lot of messages
  buys attacker little
* scalable (add more state as hardware improves)
* directly mappable to hardware, very good parallelism

Any pointers?

I think that the patent implies true hardware rng

As for PRNGs, if you can exchange million bits securely, the desired unicity
distance (based on your paranoia level) will determine how often you must
re-key

I am not sure that there is a *simple* prng with 10^6 bit state Feeding
million bits to 1-DES 64 bits at a time and using the output as the key for the
next cycle could be one way for dilluting entropy

Given system lifetime of a decade, and the rate of traffic (clearly a TBps
router leaks more than a few email messages), you might not have to rekey
at all

I am not sure that there is a *simple* prng with 10^6 bit state Feeding

Okay, so there seems to be a niche for it The simplicty refers to the
algorithm Of course you have to represent the state, and a parallel
implementation would of course add a constant factor to each bit of state

OZLU's ozone water treatment system is so effective that it successfully disinfects bacteria, paraistes, and viruses like E. Coli, Cryptosporidium, and giardia. In lab tests it has proven to be 52% more powerful than chlorine. OZLU has the exclusive marketing rights for ELCE and OZONE which are considered two of the top water treatment technologies in the world.About the CompanySimply put, we need water to live and everyday it is becoming increasingly difficult to find. Rising levels of pollution, acid rain, and global warming have all taken their toll on the resource that so many of us take for granted. Looking forward, we need to find a way to ensure proper cleansing of our world's most precious resource, and Ozolutions, Inc. (OTCBB: OZLU) has found the answer. Many companies today offer water treatment systems that use chemical impurities, ions, and minerals; however, there are many long lasting drawbacks of using so many chemicals. Ozolutions utilizes two revolutionary methods of water treatment from two of the world's leading water manufacturers. These methods cleanse the water without any harmful chemical additives and leaves OZLU poised to become a leader in the water treatment industry.Electronic Ceramics (ELCE) OZLU has spent several years negotiating the exclusive marketing rights for ELCE from one of the leading manufacturers of water treatment systems in the world. Sparing a physics and biology lesson, this process simply forces water through a chamber filled with special, small ceramic balls, which act as cleansing agents. Just as Mother Nature forces water through porous rock the ELCE method has proved itself to be a highly cost effective method of cleaning water. A more detailed explanation can be reviewed at else.chHankin Atlas Ozone Systems, Ltd.This second method uses commercial Ozone generators to inject Ozone into a water stream. When the ozone mixes with the water, a natural cleansing process takes place and cleanses or neutralizes almost all of the impurities in the water. This process is able to break down most organic molecules and is considered one of the most effective disinfecting agents commercially available. Since it is over 50% more effective than chlorine this process does have an enormous potential for the swimming pool market. For a more detailed look visit hankinozone.comIndustry PotentialThe potential market for OZLU's water treatment systems is endless. Already it is being tested in Panama and Ecuador's shrimp farms where cleaner water is expected to produce bigger, healthier shrimp faster than ever before. Initial projections call for up to $15 million in the shrimp industry alone. Furthermore, similar gains in melon and lettuce crop improvements are also being pursued as potential markets. In addition, swimming pools offer a huge potential market since OZLU's systems are over 50% more effective than chlorine while at the same time they eliminate most harmful bacteria and viruses. Just think of the potential should Hankinozonation be used to clean a fraction of the thousands, if not millions of pools worldwide.ConclusionOzolutions, Inc. offers one of the most cost-effective methods of cleansing water in the world today. Through its licenses technologies it is poised to become a major competitor in the multi-billion dollar world water market, and has ambitious plans for the US market. Whether a farmer looking to improve his irrigation water, a homeowner looking to clean her swimming pool or a shrimp farmer looking produce bigger shrimp, OZLU has a solution to meet virtually all of your needs. Re: Michael Dell's statement about suspicious orders

2002-02-28 Thread John Young

Michael Dell's statement is a more grievous attack
on civil liberties than the original it tries to apologize
for

It is inappropriate for a company to engage in the
range of considerations for domestic, non-export
use of a product Dell outlines unless the company
has made those considerations publicly known, and
law substantiates the restrictions Patriotism and
information warfare are insufficient reasons

Perhaps Dell has been covertly deputized to perform
this role but it is more likely that it has taken it on
in the same way ISPs and a slew of other zealously
patriotic companies and individuals have chosen
to put government interests ahead of customer and
citizen privacy

Dell's apology is a shallow cover-up of a deeper
cover-up It is likely there will be more of these as
exhortations increase to take commercial advantage
of inflamed panic over homeland security, demonstrated
by Cheney's speech in California a few days ago and
the global security summit upcoming in NYC in early
March Read the list of 77 speakers and corporate
sponsors to see who is throwing fuel on the fire and
anticipating firefighting:

  http://wwwglobalprivacysummitnet/

Note the inclusion of privacy as the bait for the switch

What to brace for are more incidents which will justify a
united front of government and corporate assault on
civil liberties as the terrorism machine generates
lucrative economic apologies for boom time

Recruiting Agents

Dell's admission of vetting customer use of its
products on behalf of domestic and national security,
raises the issue of who else is doing that

About ten days ago I got a telephone message from
a person who claims to work for a major ISP as a sysadmin
This person had previously disclosed the ISP's cooperation
with federal authorities to run a nationwide surveillance
system from a central hub of the ISP, claiming that the
system was set up under a memorandum of understanding
when the ISP was bought by a foreign corporation We've
published this allegation on Cryptome

We returned the call and talked about twenty minutes with
the person, who said that surveillance of the Net is
increasing rapidly over what he had said earlier Then
came a pitch that I get on board by vetting information
sent to Cryptome with federal authorities if I thought
there might be a threat to national security

The pitch got intenseThe person asked if I had criminal
background I said no Did I believe the US had enemies
I said yes Did I believe it was my responsibility to protect
the nation I said maybe Was it not wise to report threats
to the nation to authorities? I said no, it was wise to report
them to the public so it could protect itself

But, he said, don't you think the threats should be checked
with the authorities first? No, I said, it is not for me to
decide what is a threat and what is not, that my task is to
make information available and let readers decide

Wouldn't you like to boost your authority, he said, by having
it supported by official authority? I said no, that I did not
want authority, that such authority is widely available for
those who want it from responsible sources Instead, I
said, what is needed is more information not filtered by
authorities or responsible sources

Don't get me wrong, he said, I admire what you're doing
on Cryptome, and I wish I had your courage Thanks, I
said

Still, he said, I think it would be a good idea for you to
establish an ongoing relationship with the authorities
so you don't get in trouble No, I said, that is definitely
not something I want to do, for if I did that it would
be a betrayal of Cryptome readers

You know, he said, I'm very troubled by what my company
is doing, but I think in times of danger we all have to do
what we can to protect the nation, and I think you should
get in touch with the authorities to be sure information
you get is okay to publish No, I said, that's not for me,
what is needed in times of danger is more information
about how to protect yourself, and in times of danger
authorities are often a threat as great as what they
warn about

How can you be sure of that, he said, I think you need
to talk to the authorities to be sure you know what the
threats are and what you are doing is okay No, thanks,
I said

Someday, he said, I hope I have your courage, but now
I have to think about my job Agreed, I said, you should
do nothing that will put you in danger, don't jeopardize
you job and your family

However, he said, I want you to think very carefully about
arranging to check with the authorities about information
to be published on Cryptome Look, I said, the authorities
have more than adequate means to keep track of information
going on Crypotme and they don't need my help

But you need to protect yourself, don't you see, to be sure
that you are not entrapped by information sent to you
for that purpose Agreed, I said, but we were told soon after
setting up Cryptome to expect entrapment efforts, so we
do, and the reason we don't claim authority is to be sure
readers know they have to protect themselves in the
same way we do

But wouldn't you like to be protected by the authorities,
to advocate to your readers that they do the same? No,
I said, that is the role of authorities and responsible
publishers, not Cryptome

-

I think this conversation is like many going on around
the country, and shows how recruitment of agents is
being done We'd like to publish such accounts, anonymized
or not

Abortion-rights group trains activists to 'investigate' CPCs

 By Allyson Smith
 ) 2002 WorldNetDaily.com

As New York crisis pregnancy centers, or CPCs, rally to fight
subpoenas issued last month by Attorney General Eliot Spitzer
demanding information about their business practices, the National
Abortion Rights Action League, which supported Spitzer's election, is
training pro-abortion-rights activists to investigate California
 CPCs.

On Feb. 7, NARAL's California state affiliate, the California Abortion
and Reproductive Rights Action League held a special training
session on Unmasking Fake Clinics at the Westside Pavilion shopping
center in West Los Angeles. An Internet announcement for the event
promised, During the training, CARAL will expose the hidden agendas
and activities that take place behind the doors of CPCs. The session
will also equip you with the necessary information and training needed
to take action against CPCs in your community.

Re: Michael Dell's statement about suspicious orders

2002-02-28 Thread matthew X

What to brace for are more incidents which will justify a united front
of government and corporate assault on civil liberties

These may be manufactured quite easily, agent provocateurs have a long
hirstory in anarchismOddly the more the MILIND strive for security the
faster it slips through their fingersStasi east germany and the old South
africa had state of the art security backed up by state terror yet they
collapsed like a house of cardsThe modern State is so brittle it's
threatened by 000's and 111'sThat's all I've used to attack it,its cost me
a few hundred $ and cost them Thousands and thousandsCivil liberties, that
is basic human and civil rights, are best defended by the force more
powerful'Solidarity,peaceful,massive civil
disobedience,disruption,resistance,sabotage,boycotts,strikes will all be
required soonThe entire Eastern Bloc fell, almost bloodlessly, in a couple
weeks, because one by one everybody realized that all that's sometimes
required is to finally stand up and be counted, and to just say no to the
government When the time was right, all it took was a slight pushNow we
have modern encryption there is simply no excuse for more
authoritarian, hierachic power structures dictating the musicOur struggle
is to encourage people to dissolve power and return it to the hands of
humanity What people do with that power is out of our hands It is very
important that people are critical of all decisions made via direct
democracy and anarchy, but we will be powerless to stop it, if ultimately,
that is what people choose Now, I have enough faith in humanity that
people will not come to a consensus which destroys humanity This is why
I'm comfortable with APster, and what anarchist societies will ultimately
do with technology

Subject: Daily Bleed: 2/28 LINUS PAULING
The last full moon of February

new literary form. In 1588 he was arrested in Paris spent
a few hours in Bastille.
See Kenneth Rexroth's essay on Montaigne in his
Classics Revisited.
1574 -- First New World victims of Spanish Inquisition
burned at the stake.

1921 -- Russia: Kronstadt Revolt. It is here Trotsky utters his
famous line,
  Shoot them down like partridges.

...it shocked the intelligent honest minds of Europe
America into a critical examination of Bolshevik theories
practices. It exploded the Bolshevik myth of the Communist
State being the Workers' Peasants' Government.
   — Alexander Berkman, The Kronstadt Rebellion (Berlin:
Der Syndikalist, 1922), pp. 41-42.
Poet Kenneth Rexroth (“From the Paris
Commune to the Kronstadt Rebellion”), was one
of those few Americans who, for example, saw
through Bolshevik pretenses as early as 1921,
when Trotsky Lenin crushed the libertarian
  revolt of the Kronstadt soviet.
While clearly opposing all forms of
“Communism” he did not, like so many others of
his generation, react into supporting Western
capitalism or becoming a Cold War Warrior.

The Kronstadt Revolt was a topic at meetings
he helped organize with the San Francisco
 Anarchist Circle in the 1940s.
I am far better aware of
 The evils of Stalinism
 Than you are, you ex-Trotskyite
Warmonger. But it won’t get you
Anywhere to tell me I should
Welcome the beast who devours me
 Just because a bigger lion
 Is eating somebody else on

In a free society a person may sell to whom he wishes, or not sell, as

CBS urged not to show graphic footage in
  9/11 film
Wed Feb 27, 8:54 PM ET

HACKENSACK, NJ (Reuters) - The CBS television network
was urged Wednesday not to show
graphic footage of the World Trade Center attacks in a
documentary it plans to air next month

Any media event that indiscriminately broadcasts the
graphic horrors of that day will disrupt the
healing process, said a letter to CBS from Bergen County
prosecutor William Schmidt, head of an
  advisory board for victims' families

Schmidt, writing on behalf of the American Red Cross,
United Way and other groups assisting victims'
families in Bergen County since the attacks, also asked
CBS to air the program at a later date instead
of March 10, almost the six-month anniversary of the
attacks

While we do not object to the showing of the documentary,
we are particularly concerned about the
potentially negative psychological effects that graphic
details of death and destruction may have on the
thousands of individuals who have been traumatized by the
events of September 11th, Schmidt said in
  the letter

Some of the nearly 3,000 victims of the World Trade Center
attack lived in Bergen County across the
  Hudson River from Manhattan

Gil Schwartz, CBS spokesman in New York, said he had not
received the letter and would respond
when he did But he defended the two-hour film as
responsible and sensitive and said there was no
footage of people being killed He said rumors of such
footage were the result of misinformation and
  misapprehension

French brothers Gedeon and Jules Naudet, the filmmakers,
were recording firefighters' training
exercises about 14 blocks from the Trade Center when the
attacks began They kept their cameras
running and recorded the planes' approaches to the twin
towers and scenes inside the buildings of
  rescues and escaping workers

Australian cops interrogate Jim-Bell quoting online anarchist

There are those people who seek out trouble. Still others accidentally
attract it. And then there are those who have devoted their lives to
stalking trouble, running it to ground, sneaking up behind it, thwapping it
on the nose, proclaiming that its mother wears combat boots, and daring it
to an impromptu match of fisticuffs. Afterward they lie, nose-bloodied and
battered, on the ground and grumble. (In a grudge match, trouble always wins.)

Matt Stephen Taylor (who goes by proffr and mattd) is one of those
people. If awards were given for Most Innovative Way to Taunt Police, this
self-described anarchist would be a gold medalist in the category of
performance art. For the last few months, as far as I can tell, he's done
little but tempt trouble:
http://www.politechbot.com/cgi-bin/politech.cgi?name=proffr

Trouble came and went when mattd/proffr, who lives in central Victoria,
Australia, taunted the Cincinnati police. He allegedly posted threats
against Steven Roach, the policeman whose shooting of an unarmed black man
led to riots in Cincinnati. But the Australian cops nabbed proffr/mattd
first, and proffr/mattd pled guilty to vandalizing a McDonald's restaurant.

While the legal process is going forward, mattd/proffr has amused himself
by subscribing to the cypherpunks list, a place not known for people who
are readily offended. Yet his unique combination of rants and inchoate
posts (my filters have snared about 780 of them) has driven subscribers to
invent custom procmail recipies to complain about off-topic messages. One
message that went to his Internet provider was a little whiny by list
standards, but captured the sentiment well:
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] // Subject: Re: Youth in Asia // Someone who
appears to be posting from a nex.net.au address [EMAIL PROTECTED] keeps
posting large volumes of spam, obcenity, death threats to random people,
mail bombs, and so forth to our mailing list. He keeps changing his
apparent address, so
we have difficulty filtering him out. His postings were originally merely
excessive and of doubtful relevance, but have become more and more hostile
and harassing.

mattd/proffr appears to have subscribed to the cypherpunks list to carry on
the dubious mission of Jim Bell, the author of the long-winded anarcho
screed Assassination Politics. Bell wrote how the next generation of
Internet entrepreneurs will use digital cash, anonymous remailers, and such
to off miscreant federal agents (Bell especially didn't care for tax
collectors):
http://zolatimes.com/v2.26/jimbell.htm

Bell, of course, was convicted last year by a Washington state jury and is
serving 10 years in the Lompoc federal prison. Bell was another dedicated
trouble-hunter, as was Carl Johnson, a cypherpunk who was convicted of
threats but is now out of gaol, at least temporarily (his probation officer
apparently told him not to seek trouble by continuing to participate in
list discussions):
http://www.politechbot.com/p-02938.html

Although Bell technically was convicted for allegedly stalking federal
agents, his essay and political views became a big part of his trial:
http://www.cluebot.com/search.pl?topic=ap-politics

Now mattd/proffr seems to want to follow the Bell-Johnson precedent by
emailing semi-random rants and Assassination Politics-related references to
the cypherpunks list, and, I presume, just about everywhere else. Here's a
representative excerpt from one of his posts:
Youth In Asia Society: At our last monthly meeting, we discussed all of the
reasons there are not to KILL THE PRESIDENT. We think it is our duty to
inform people of our objection to those who believe it is necessary to KILL
THE PRESIDENT. We also object to people who are constantly running around,
shouting, incessantly, KILL THE PRESIDENT! KILL THE PRESIDENT! KILL THE
PRESIDENT! KILL THE PRESIDENT! KILL THE PRESIDENT! KILL THE PRESIDENT! KILL
THE PRESIDENT! KILL THE PRESIDENT! KILL THE PRESIDENT! KILL THE PRESIDENT!
KILL THE PRESIDENT! KILL THE PRESIDENT! KILL THE PRESIDENT!

It's a lot longer, but you get the idea.

This style of posting seems to have raised some eyebrows inside the
Australian constabulary, not to mention leading to a raid, a laptop
seizure, and an interrogation or two. Read in mattd/proffr's own words
below how he hasn't given up on tempting trouble.

Security co-processor keeps PC platforms safe

2002-02-28 Thread Kerry Thompson

National Semiconductor has developed a novel PC security coprocessor
for securing data, authenticating users and checking the status of the
system's hardware.

The SafeKeeper PC21100 trusted platform module (TPM) is the first of
several National coprocessors with enhanced security functionality
that supports version 1.1 of the Trusted Computing Platform Alliance
(TCPA) security specification.
The SafeKeeper TPM provides protected storage of cryptographic and
sensitive data, authenticates a host computing device by verifying its
identity to other computing devices, and supplies metrics that provide
a reliable and trusted network environment.
It acts as a root of trust - a dependable block that can report the
security status of the rest of the system.
As it is hardware-based, it is not vulnerable to attacks like
conventional software-only solutions.
The SafeKeeper TPM is the most basic building block of the TCPA
security specification.
It is not accessible by the host CPU except through formalised methods
and is secured by industry standard cryptographic techniques.
The SafeKeeper TPM consists of a processor, memory, peripherals,
cryptographic accelerators and embedded firmware to implement the TCPA
security function.
We have recognised the need for increased trust in PC platforms.
That's why we are working with industry partners and playing an active
role in the TCPA to enable trustworthiness in electronic
transactions, said Joel Christensen, marketing director of Intel's
desktop platform solutions division.
SafeKeeper security technology puts hackers back where they belong -
on the outside, unable to get into your system, said Ulrich Seif,
chief information officer for National Semiconductor.

At some point after about 18:00 hours on Thu. Feb. 28 we'll be taking SSZ
down. We could concievably be back and working by Fri. but don't plan on a
return until Sunday PM. This modification will require changes to the
whois/dns records so full functionality may not return for all users until
sometime mid-next week. Once through next week we should be stable for a
period of time. The last major upgrade was 4 years ago.

As the individual mailing lists come back online I'll send a note out. The
reason is that the vast majority of the lists will be moved to the
open-forge.org domain. Only Cypherpunks and Club Inferno will remain in
 the ssz.com domain.

Court says gang speech protected by First Amendment

By DAVID KRAVETS Associated Press Writer Published 1:20 a.m. PST
 Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Arizona cannot prosecute a former gang member for
advising a gang on its operations, initiation, expulsion and graffiti
practices, a federal appeals court ruled Tuesday.

The decision by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower
court's decision overturning the 15-year sentence of Jerry Dean McCoy,
who was convicted in 1996 of participating in a criminal street gang.
The three-judge panel said McCoy's advice to gang members - prosecuted
under a 1993 Arizona law - was protected under the First Amendment.

The court pointed out it was mindful of the serious problems
posed by street gangs and that it was sympathetic to the Arizona
Legislature's efforts to protect its citizens from the evils gangs
 all too often inflict.

We are forced to agree that McCoy's speech, at most, constituted mere
abstract advocacy of lawlessness, rather than an intentional effort to
further illegal activity, Judge Diarmuid F. O'Scannlain wrote.

McCoy's attorney, T.S. Hartzell, said his client advised Arizona gang
members at two parties, and the discussions were centered on McCoy
saying, 'You guys don't know how to run a gang,' Hartzell said.

What the Legislature intended was to stop people from saying, 'Go
see so and so and collect money from him and if you have to, hurt
him,' he said. Ginger Jarvis, assistant Arizona attorney general,
said the state would contest the ruling, either by asking the court to
reconsider its decision or by asking the U.S. Supreme Court to review
 the case.

But Pati Urias, a spokeswoman for the Attorney General's Office, said
later that the office hasn't yet made a decision on whether to pursue
 the case further.

O'Scannlain said a conviction for the speech from the former
California gang member strays dangerously close to a finding of guilt
by association. Such a conviction, even in the context of a street
gang, cannot be squared with the First Amendment, and thus cannot
 stand.

The court, however, added that McCoy could be successfully prosecuted
if Arizona proved that his speech actually caused imminent lawless
 action.

But prosecutors did not present such evidence, O'Scannlain said,
adding that speech cannot be punished for advocating illegal action
 at some indefinite future time.
