Consider a one-way hash function producing an m-bit
output,as an example let us consider a
4 bit output of a hash function,where M is the message
fed and H is the hashing function.

For a 4 bit hash function,in order to brute force,i.e
to find a message that hashes to the
same value would take  (2^m)+1 random messages,which
is 2^4=16+1=17 random messages. 

P(two random messages hashing to the same
value)=1/16=0.0625
P(two random messages not hashing to the same
value)=1-0.0625=0.9375

Method 1

we find P(5 random messages not hashing to the same
hash value) 

When we choose 5 random messages,the number of message
pairs formed are n*(n-1)/2

i.e 5*4/2=10 pairs

Thus 
P(5 random messages not hashing to the same hash
value)=0.9375^10 = 52%

Similarly P(5.2 random messages not hashing to the
same hash value)=0.9375^10.92 = 50%

Method 2


The number of random messages needed for the chance to
be 50%  that 2 random messages hash to
the same value is also given as 1.2*(k^0.5)

For our example k=16 and

1.2*(16^0.5)=4.8 random messages are needed so that 2
random messages hash to the same value.


Method 3

Book says finding 2 messages that hash to the same
value takes hashing only 2^(m/2) random
messages.


i.e in our example 2^(4/2)=4  random messages.

So how many random messages do I need to hash to the
same value.

1. Is it 5.2 random messages or 4.8  or 4?
2. Is not Method 1 that yields the accurate solution?
3. Are Method 2 and 3 approximations and how is 
1.2*(k^0.5) actually obtained?
4. Is it that Method 2 is approximated to Method
3,since eg.  for a 160 bit output 

   Method 2 yields 1.2*(2^(160/2))= 1.2*2^80 which is
the number of random messages required
so  that they hash to the same value.While Method 3
simply gives 2^(m/2) which would be
2^(160/2)=2^80


Book further says-"If you want to drop the odds of
some one breaking your system to less than
1 in 2^80,use a 160 bit one-way hash function".

The birthday attack only works when we find 2 random
messages that hashes to the same value.
Here we know one message and we hash it to obtain an
output value.Now we are trying to find
a random message that hashes to the same value.

P(One random message that hashes to the same
value)=1/2^160.

We will have to hash 2^159 messages,assuming that we
succeed at 50% and will not be 2^80 as book
says.

How do we justify this?

"A girl got into the driver's side of the vehicle, and when they
started leaving without the headlights on, and at a high rate of
speed, the agents felt certain that this was their suspect and he
was trying to escape," Trevino said after the shooting. 

When agents boxed the car in and attempted to arrest the man,
they said the girl who was driving the car continued toward them
and slammed into their vehicle, then shifted into reverse and
rammed the DEA vehicle behind her. Agents fired at least four
times, and the girl was struck in the head. 

Trevino said the man was not the drug suspect agents were
seeking, but he was booked into jail on a charge of public
intoxication.

   Is there a major dos going on or what? For the last 4 hours or so I've been

That is utter bullshit.  I didn't do anything to any of these 
people and I am in no position to change their circumstances.  
Abolishing the public school/juvenile delinquent factories and 
making schools compete for their students on based on the quality 
of the education offered would result in a tremendous improvement 
the quality of life of these kids.  But that's just one of the 
things I can't change for them.  The money I put into these systems 
is stolen from me.  All I can do is homeschool my own kids.

All this distributing collective blame and laying blanket guilt 
trips on all Americans for the sins of previous generations or the 
screw-ups of our betters gives me gas.

If their goal is to blackmail us into not invading them, I don't think they 
need to threaten to nuke LA or DC.  We have a lot of troops in South Korea, 
within a few miles of the border.  They can threaten them, or maybe 
threaten Tokyo or Seoul.  No need to develop multi-billion dollar 
technology, when 1940s era fission bombs are all that's needed.

If their goal is to extort money from us (this looks like the most likely 
goal), they have a somewhat different set of requirements.  Then, their 
threat is really going to be about proliferation.  They announce they have 
nukes, and make it clear that either we buy them, or someone else will be 
given the chance.  The saber-rattling serves both to communicate the threat 
and to advertise for buyers.

There's been a bit of discussion of this stuff in the US media, especially 
NPR.  I think the idea is that the US government (and presumably others) 
want scientific publications to self-censor things that might be useful to 
terrorists, rogue states, and various other bad guys.  Intuitively, this

working scientists, then?  Do you create a situation where only people 
going to the best schools in the US and Europe get to learn the current

the next terrorist attack, they'll vote unanimously to start drafting

The creepier subtext here is the whole idea that there are some 
technologies that only the Elect (in the currently powerful nations) ought 
to be permitted, and that any attempt to investigate Banned Technologies 
just might get you arrested or invaded or bombed.  This general idea seems 
to pop up a lot, e.g., in Bill Joy's essay "Why the Future Doesn't Need 
Us," in Vinge's wonderful novel _The Peace War_,  in Larry Niven's Known 
Space stories.  It's hard to imagine a better recipe for massively slowing 
the advance of technology, protecting incumbents in every field and 
industry, and generally making mankind worse off in order to protect 
him.  And yet, it's an apparently natural reaction to being frightened by 
the threats of new technologies.  (Ironically, the nasty terror weapons 
we're all worried about are mostly 1940s or earlier technology.  Stuff that 
even a third-rate starving dictatorship can cook up.)

Tuesday upheld a local California ordinance banning gun
bazaars on public fairgrounds, a decision expected to
lead to similar bans statewide. 

In dismissing a challenge to the Alameda County
ordinance, the three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit
Court of Appeals ruled that gun enthusiasts did not have
a constitutional right to possess weapons for sale on
public property. 

The decision follows a state Supreme Court ruling in
April that allowed cities and counties to prohibit gun
shows on their property. 

Los Angeles, Alameda and other California counties
banned gun bazaars on public fairgrounds amid concerns
such shows promote violence.

MEChA is mostly about keeping college admission
standards lower for South American-derived 
wannabe students[1].  This has recently gotten difficult
because it is inherently unconstitutional, and
increasingly recognized as such, when government
funds the admitting entity.  

But its hard to retain your "pride" when you know 
you haven't competed fairly, isn't it?   

Tribals (like MEChAns) who get their pride 
from being in some unchosen category (like ethnicity,
nationality, etc)  do not understand the earning of merit.

Agreed.  Completely.  Except for the caliber of school.  My Gladiator School
had teachers who were just too stupid to leave - to put that another way, the
smart ones left after their first rape or beating experience, leaving only
the incompetents who knew less than the students they were "teaching".

The problem is that they were more correct in this than you were: most of the

   Yeah, no kidding. Lot's of kids brought guns to school when I was in
highschool. Kids that lived in the country would hunt before school, catch the
schoolbus, with their rifle or shotgun in a case, of course, and put it in their
locker while in class, take it out, take the bus home and hunt after school. Why
not? And of course they were usually carrying a fair amount of ammo as well. 
   And when I was in college at the UW-Madison, I regularly took my .22 target
pistol down to the university indoor range and practiced. I'm not sure that
college students are even allowed to have guns in the dorm now.

Against my better judgement, I find myself agreeing with this statement on 
one level.

However, it should be noted that the "Black Pride" movement of the late 60s 
and early 70s was a necessary reaction to years and years of negative 
messages sent towards the notion of being African American. "Black Pride" 
was probably the most valuable for nothing else than being a political 
movement that asserted that asserting such a thing was possible or 
desirable.

However, this notion of "Black Pride" eventually on some levels reinforced 
an almost ghettoization of black culture, both by blacks as well as Whites. 
As a simple example, we still use the term "African Americans" to refer to 
'black' folks (which seems to mean any person with even a single gene 
inherited from the African continent), even though the relationship between 
black folks and Africa is probably not any closer than black folks and 
Europe. (Likewise, White folks partake daily of the fruits of African 
culture in our lands, the most obvious example being music.) So we still 
maintain that there's American culture, and then there's African American 
culture, a dichotomy that is reflected in the equally racist notions of 
"black" and "white" people.

The sad thing is that this marginalization/ghettoization extends even to the 
absolute highest arts. A couple of years ago I caught Wayne SHorter and 
Herbie Hancock, and their performance was as abstract, complex, and 
multi-hued as anything this overly cutlured NYC boy has experienced. And I 
don't remember seeing a single black face in the audience. So now Jazz is 
"white", despite its profoundly African roots, while many (of course not 
all) black folks are willing to settle for either overproduced muzaky trash, 
or mindless rap (Not that all rap is mindless by the way, but less and less 
of it is of the caliber of Public Enemy or Grandmaster Flash.) I would 
presume that one reason for this has to do with the fact that real Jazz is 
no longer perceived by most black folks as being black, so it is largely 
ignored.

However, that this pack mentality for many black folks exists should be no 
suprise, as there's strength in numbers and as my father says, "Where there 
are two or more Americans gathered have ye a lynch mob". So its dangerous in 
this country to be marginalized, for to be marginalized means to be largely 
disempowered. It's something of a mistake, tis true, but its probably the 
universal human reaction to years and years of oppression and hate.

to be helped along a bit."

Uh, Ok whatever. I'd point out that the genetic diversity of African 
Americans is such that they are probably genetically superior to most 
whites. Don't think that being fantastic at sports is some indication that 
black folks are merely big, dumb graceful animals. If those same kids had 
the same drive to excel in mathematics or science, they'd do extremely well.

In the 80s I worked in one of the toughest High Schools in the country, in 
Brooklyn. One of my students was brutally murdered, and throughout a 
semester several would be "out sick" due to being atacked with knives. (This 
was in addition to fireworks being set off regularly in the halls, gang 
fights, rampant vandalism and recreational "fires" and so on.) And yet it 
was quite clear to me that the intelligence level of these students was by 
no means much less than that of whites at good high schools (I attended a 
famous Science and math HS in NYC.). The sad thing was that these kids 
really had never been exposed to the "why" of education, and asked me 
regularly about the basic math I was teaching them: "Why do we have to learn 
this? We'll never use this in real life." More than this, they couldn't even 
really conceive of a life without the ubiquitous violence and filth around 
them. There was no real reason to do well or get a good job. In the end, it 
not only felt futile to work there, it was depressing.

Was this "black people's" fault? Nah. It's all of our fault.

past 40 years. I used to even use the term "black" for negroes, before 
they started changing the name every few years (Afro-American, 
African-American, "person of color") and calling anyone who used the 
replaced name a "racist."

Also, I watched what happened when I proposed a "White Students Union" 
in college.

It seems negroes are give carte blanche, so to speak, to spew about 
honkies and hymies and whiteys and to declare everyone else racist. In 
fact, their most-revered ideologists have been explaining how negroes 
cannot be racist, no matter their language or discrimination, because 
racism is about the oppression and marginalization of peoples of color 
by the dominant whitemale paradigm. Or whatever.

In the past fifteen years I have come to realize that crypto anarchy 
will probably change all this, as it makes for a system where only a 
competent elite does well. Probably fifty million marginal Americans, 
including nearly all of the so-called "peoples of color," will, one 
hopes, fade away.

Race warfare may be coming, as the inner city mutants have their meal 
tickets cancelled. This is why so many white people are buying so many 
guns.

Paul Keating says politics needs more idealism and outrage, and that too 
many people come into public life through the back door of ministerial 
offices, rather than with passion through the front door.
"This chloroforms the whole game," the former prime minister said yesterday.
In a rare public appearance, Mr Keating criticised parts of today's Labor 
Party for lacking confidence.
"They don't really think they should be in charge ... we have got to 
smarten the [Labor] party machine. There's not much idealism around these 
days."
Yet he saved his strongest criticism for the old foe, the Liberal Party: 
"These guys will need a Gregory's to get into the western suburbs ... They 
rely on shibboleths, jingoism and wedge politics to stay in office. That's 
not going to take us anywhere. It's all rear-vision mirror stuff."
Mr Keating was speaking at a fund-raising breakfast for Linda Burney, the 
ALP candidate for Canterbury-Bankstown in the state election. He said Ms 
Burney believed in something and was prepared "to climb into the big ring".

Recalling his own start in politics, Mr Keating said he had just finished 
reading Hugh Trevor-Roper's The Last Days of Hitler and a book of Winston 
Churchill's speeches when a vocational guidance officer at Punchbowl Boys' 
High School told him he could be an accountant or a panel beater.

To the contrary, the young Keating said he had been thinking about running 
the country.

Having joined the party and Sydney County Council, he quickly got into 
management mode as a 15-year-old clerk.

"As kid of 18-20 you walked around as if you ran the place. Why? Because we 
did."

Urging the party to "hold the naked flame and hang on to it", Mr Keating 
said: "These days people in the party don't understand who should be on top 
and who shouldn't. It's an enormous cultural advantage to know you are 
destined to be in charge."

Detectives attached wires to a man's genitals and zapped him to learn the 
whereabouts of his older brother whom police later shot dead, Western 
Australia's police royal commission was told yesterday.

The torture allegations came as five Perth officers were stood down after 
allegations on Monday of widespread brutality to suspects.

Witness John Irvine told the inquiry yesterday he had lost two sons to 
police action.

His son Colin was fatally shot in the head during a raid on January 9, 
1991, by police who suspected him of murder.

Morley detectives had found Colin after torturing his younger brother, 
Gavin, Mr Irvine said.
"They threatened him with certain things and put a bucket on his head and 
bashed him around," Mr Irvine said.

"He assumed it was telephone books.

"He said they stuck wires to his genitals. Whether they zapped him I don't 
know, because he didn't tell me that he had been electrocuted.

However, two other witnesses, who cannot be named, said Gavin told them 
police had given him an electric shock via the genital wires.

One witness said Gavin Irvine was still at Morley police station when 
police told him they had killed his brother.

"They said to him 'We shot your brother's brains out'," the witness said.

Gavin Irvine committed suicide in 1996 still riddled with guilt about 
telling police where his brother was, his father said. "He believed that if 
he had been tougher in his mind his brother would still be alive," he said.

Mr Irvine's testimony comes a day after counsel assisting the commission, 
Ken Pettit, SC, began examining allegations of widespread brutality at 
metropolitan criminal investigation branches during the 1990s.

Commissioner Geoffrey Kennedy, QC, has been told a Claremont detective used 
an electric cattle prod to get at least one man to talk, while Morley and 
Wanneroo officers threatened suspects with an electric buzzer.

Mr Pettit said the focus of the brutality inquiry would shift this week to 
the Perth and Scarborough CIBs.

The probe into whether WA police have engaged in corrupt or criminal 
activity continues.

a foreign language in order to be able to read important literary, 
historical, philosophical, or scientific works in other languages, in

case Spanish is a good language for Americans to learn; or just to 
broaden one's horizons, in which case I am told that Swahili is a good

The next hurdle I have to overcome is getting a reference PKCS #11 module,
although this shouldn't take too long if I can ever get the Gnu PKCS #11 to
compile.

Predictions are risky, cause the future has not happened yet.

But I think I have a history of making good predictions, for
example I predicted the fall of the Soviet Union, so I will
foolishly stick my neck out and make some predictions:

The Iraq war will, as everyone knows, be launched on the 27 or
28th of february.

It will be short and victorious, ending some time in april or
march.   War coverage will be highly patriotic and gung ho, but
will remind viewers of what they have tended to forget -- the
cost of war, with damaging effects on the presidency. The
conquered Iraqis will be eager to please, and much less
truculent than those damned french.   They will gladly seek
direction on their future political institutions.

Despite that, the peace will prove considerably harder to win
than the war. with servants of the Iranian theocrats demanding
unlimited democracy, and absolute popular sovereignty, a
democracy similar to that which we have so often seen in Africa
-- one man, one vote, once, a demand which will receive
European and UN support.   The new imperial domain will come to
haunt Americans.

Confessed killer would face death penalty if convicted

Andrew McCrae's lawyer told a judge yesterday he will fight efforts to 
return McCrae to California, where the college sophomore has admitted to 
killing a police officer on Nov. 19.

Concord District Court Judge Michael Ryan gave attorney Mark Sisti until 
Jan. 10 to file his arguments against extradition. Sisti declined to 
discuss his legal strategy, saying it will be available in his petition 
within two weeks.

Meanwhile, California authorities released investigative files this week 
that more clearly explain what - aside from his confessions - led the 
police to suspect McCrae, a 23-year-old college student from Washington, in 
the slaying of a police officer in Red Bluff, Calif.

One newly released report said that a car and gun registered in McCrae's 
name had been linked to the murder.

According to a second report, McCrae's family told an investigator that 
McCrae is an idealist. He traveled to the Middle East last Christmas to act 
as a human shield between the Israelis and Palestinians and may have been 
arrested in the World Trade Organization protests in Seattle last spring.

McCrae was frustrated that his gripes have gone unheard, his family said.

"His older brother relates that Andy is acting as if he is in a movie and 
the media attention will cause the world to change," an officer wrote after 
interviewing the family.

McCrae, who legally changed his name from Andrew Mickel, was arrested on 
Nov. 26 in a Concord hotel room after insisting on being allowed to tell a 
reporter why he had ambushed and shot Officer David Mobilio three times. He 
said he was protesting police brutality and corporate irresponsibility.

Someone identifying himself as McCrae had made a similar confession on the 
Internet shortly before the arrest.

McCrae, who is being held at the Merrimack County Jail, did not speak at 
his brief court hearing yesterday. He faces the death penalty in California 
if convicted because he is accused of killing a police officer on duty.

Prosecutor Scott Murray said McCrae can protest the extradition on only 
four points, all of them technical and limited. He could question whether 
California authorities have the right person or a criminal charge pending. 
He could also argue that he is not a fugitive from justice or that the 
paperwork attached to the extradition paperwork is insufficient.

Murray said McCrae's extradition appears in order but that it is not 
unusual for a defendant to fight return. A man arrested in New Hampshire 
recently for allegedly raping a girl in Florida protested his extradition 
on the grounds that the signatures on Florida's request was not valid 
because they were done in calligraphy.

The judge denied the man's arguments and returned him to Florida, Murray 
said. "I've been doing this for 20 years, and I have not seen one of these 
(extradition requests) derailed by legal means," Murray said.

While Sisti declined to discuss his arguments against extradition, he did 
say that he and Murray have different ideas about the grounds for a petition.

It is still unclear what led the police to find McCrae at the Holiday Inn 
in Concord. He reportedly took a flight east after the shooting. But the 
police reports released this week in California do provide new information 
about the evidence the police gathered from witnesses and McCrae's family 
before they arrested him.

Mobilio was shot and killed Nov. 19, around 1:30 a.m. as he refueled his 
cruiser in Red Bluff. Investigators traced the bullets taken from Mobilio's 
body to one of four makes of a .40 caliber handgun, according to a police 
report. McCrae had registered one of those makes, a Sig Sauer, in his name 
in Washington.

In addition, three witnesses said they saw a red or maroon hatchback near 
the scene with a cloth covering the license plate. One of the witnesses 
identified the car as a Mustang. The police ran a check of registration 
records and found that McCrae has a maroon Ford Mustang registered in his 
name in Washington, the police report said.

The other investigative file detailed conversations a police officer had 
with McCrae's family the day McCrae was arrested. It revealed that in 
addition to confessing the murder to his parents, McCrae confessed to his 
two brothers and a Washington Post reporter who is friendly with McCrae's 
parents.

"(McCrae) related to (the Post) reporter that he needed to be arrested so 
the media will get the story out," the report said. "That he is not afraid 
of going to jail for the rest of his life because he is exposing the 
injustice of the world."

The report also offered some new biographical information about McCrae.

His father, Stanley Mickel of Ohio, told an officer that his son joined the 
Army in 1998 after graduati

Alciere allegedly makes posts supporting cop-killer

Postings on the Internet believed to have been made by Tom Alciere of 
Nashua supported the murder of a California police officer.

CONCORD  Less than 200 minutes after an Olympia, Wash., man confessed to a 
New Hampshire reporter he had killed a California police officer, Nashuas 
infamous former state legislator with similar views had resurfaced.

Someone purporting to be Tom Alciere posted a message on a now-familiar San 
Francisco news Web site praising Andrew Hampton McCrae for admitting he 
killed Red Bluff, Calif., police Officer David Mobilio at random while 
Mobilio was pumping gas into his cruiser Nov. 19.

McCrae surrendered peacefully to Concord police Tuesday after being 
holed-up in a Holiday Inn for eight hours. He told local police and a 
Concord reporter he decided to come to New Hampshire because its 
Constitution allows for revolution.

If somebody had slaughtered that goon while the goon was refueling a 
patrol car, then that goon wouldnt be shoving a submachine gun in your 
face, Alciere apparently posted at 1:21 p.m. on Tuesday.

Thats why the attack in Red Bluff was absolutely justified. If the voters 
dont like it, they shouldve thought of that BEFORE they voted against 
candidates who would repeal the unjust laws.

Let this be a lesson to them: Vote wrong, cops die. And let this be a 
lesson to police chiefs across the USA: Cops under control, or cops under 
flowers.

No one would answer the door to knocks by reporters at Alcieres home 
Wednesday.

Two days earlier, McCrae had visited the same site and posted two 
manifestos that included a confession to Mobilios killing and the 
illogical legal claim that forming a New Hampshire corporation gave him 
immunity from prosecution for the crime, which carries the death penalty in 
California.

The writer claiming to be Alciere likened McCraes act to the violence of 
patriots instigated during the Revolutionary War.

Americans didnt let the Redcoats get away with tax enforcement and 
Americans dont have to let the police get away with drug enforcement. What 
are they supposed to do, try to scare the intruders away with a Boy Scout 
knife? the writer asked rhetorically.

All of this painfully brought back to state lawmakers Alcieres stunning 
election as a Republican legislator in 2000 after Democratic and 
Libertarian Party candidacies had failed.

When McCrae had just given himself up, House Assistant Majority Leader 
David Hess, R-Hooksett, poked his head in the Statehouse pressroom.

I want it perfectly understood this man (McCrae) did not just get elected 
as a Republican to the New Hampshire Legislature, Hess said, holding back 
a smile.

Alciere, 43, won in 2000 without informing voters of his views or drawing 
attention to his anti-police views posted more than a year before on the 
Internet.

Following the vote, Alciere went online and said he was elected by a 
bunch of fat, stupid, ugly old ladies that watch soap operas, play bingo, 
read tabloids and dont know the metric system.

In early January 2001, Alciere told The Valley News of Lebanon that he 
loves it when someone kills a police officer: Its unfortunate that cops 
do make it necessary (to kill them) when theyre waging a war on drugs, and 
I view cops as enemy officers.

Alciere said he is too chicken to do it himself and in 1999 summed up 
his views this way: Nobody will ever be safe until the last cop is dead.

The uproar over Alcieres statements started an avalanche of calls for him 
to renounce those views or resign.

Initially, Alciere said his anti-police comments were the harmless 
rantings of a private citizen that wouldnt influence his legislative work.

Alciere first sounded defiant and said he would never step down, but on 
Jan. 11, he left with a whimper, dropping off a resignation letter in House 
Speaker Gene Chandlers office.

Meanwhile, McCraes neighbors in Olympias Capital Hill Apartments could 
not explain how this 23-year-old could become a cop killer.

Gina Gervasi says she lived across the hall from McCrae.

He just seemed like a normal guy. A kid, you know, 20s, Gervasi said. I 
didnt think hed ever kill a police officer. I dont know. I cant believe 
that.

A 91-year-old neighbor of McCraes told The Sacramento Bee she spoke 
several times to the neatly dressed man who had told her he was studying 
creative writing and carpentry in college.

Louise Bracker said McCrae moved in during September.

He was kind of friendly and I wondered why would he want to talk to a 
91-year-old woman, Bracker said. But then I figured he was kind of 
lonesome.

McCrae apparently entered the service as an infantryman in late 1998 and 
transferred to the ready reserve in 2001. The Pentagon had no information

Documents describe accused cop killer

The former Springfielder charged with murdering a California police
officer was involved in peace efforts in Israel, according to recently
unsealed court documents. 
Andrew Hampton Mickel traveled to Israel at about Christmas 2001 as part
of a peace-oriented group that acted as human shields between the
Israelis and Palestinians, according to a Nov. 26 inter-office
communication written by then-Springfield Police Capt. Stephen P. Moody,
who became Springfield's police chief Wednesday. 
Mickel, 23, reportedly was frustrated by the Israelis' ability to
circumvent the effort, Moody wrote in the document released by Tehama
County Superior Court in California. 
Moody wrote that Mickel's parents contacted a local defense attorney
after the killing of the police officer in November. 
"They related that they had been in telephonic contact with their
son, and he had advised then that he had shot and killed a police officer
in Red Bluff," Moody wrote. 
Moody's narrative was filed in the California court and was made
available after a records request by the Red Bluff Daily News. 
Officer David Mobilio was ambushed at about 1:30 a.m. Nov. 19 while he
fueled his patrol car. He was shot twice in the left side and once at
close range in the back of the head. 
Mickel reportedly contacted several people after the shooting, including
Washington Post reporter Lois Raimondo, who reportedly is a family
friend. She is a Wittenberg University graduate. 
He told her he killed the officer and he needed to be arrested so the
media would report the story, Moody wrote. Mickel reportedly said he was
not afraid of going to jail for the rest of his life because he was
exposing the injustice of the world. 
Raimondo reportedly called Mickel's parents, Stanley Mickel, a Wittenberg
professor of languages, and his wife, Karen, a mathematics professor at
the University of Dayton. His father checked the Web site of the Red
Bluff Police Division and found the killer's profile fit his son, Moody's
document stated. 
Andrew Mickel also telephoned both his brothers and his parents and
reportedly told his parents that what he told Raimondo was true. He did
not give them specific information about how he allegedly killed Mobilio,
but he told his mother he disposed of the gun before he boarded a plane
east, the document stated. 
A .40-caliber handgun that could have been one of four makes, including a
Sig Sauer, was used to shoot Mobilio, according to a Nov. 26 statement of
probable cause written by California Bureau of Investigation Special
Agent Jeff Lierly. A .40-caliber Sig Sauer handgun was registered to
Andrew Mickel in Washington. 
Andrew Mickel, 23, is a 1998 North High School graduate who served in the
U.S. Army for three years. His father said he joined the service to
provide discipline in his life and excelled in the mental and physical
challenges, but also was turned off by the service, according to the
inter-office police document. 
He graduated from the Army's Ranger school, airborne school and jungle
operations training school, and he served at Fort Benning, Ga., and Fort
Campbell, Ky., Moody wrote. 
He then began studying creative writing at Evergreen State College in
Olympia, Wash., where he was a sophomore. 
Moody's inter-office communication states Mickel's father said his son
needs an opportunity to express his platform and described him as
idealistic, intelligent and stubborn, with a wry sense of humor. He said
his son believes "America is raping the world ... and is
anti-globalization," Moody wrote. 
Andrew Mickel's brother reportedly stated he "is acting as if he is
in a movie and the media attention will cause the world to change."

A maroon 1992 Ford Mustang hatchback registered to Andrew Mickel in
Washington potentially is linked to the crime. Two witnesses said they
saw a maroon early-90s model Ford Mustang hatchback parked near the scene
of the shooting at about 6:30 p.m. Nov. 18, the day before the killing,
according to the probable cause statement. A cloth covered both license
plates. 
Another witness stated he was passed by a car with a brown cloth over the
rear license plate at about 1:45 a.m. Nov. 19, about 15 minutes after the
killing, according to the probable cause statement. 
Andrew Mickel wrecked his car Nov. 19 in Oregon, according to a report in
the Sacramento Bee. While deputies responded to the crash, a nearby
resident invited Andrew Mickel in to shower and clean up. He was not
arrested because deputies had no indication he was linked to a homicide,
the Bee reported.

One reason why it may not have been picked up (speaking as a political

far more newsworthy, and more than just talk.

clips on Rush & Sean.  They used it as an opportunity to beat up on

FBI, DOJ Crack Satellite Piracy Ring

Five people were taken into custody by the FBI Tuesday
morning as part of a complex sting operation. The bureau's
Computer Crimes Section in the Central District of California,
said it targeted hackers allegedly developing and distributing
software and hardware for pirating satellite television
signals.

Tuesday's arrests bring the operation's total tally to 17
people across 7 states, with a number of the accused
indicted for violating the anti-decryption provisions of the
Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) (define).

The indictments mark the first time the controversial DMCA
has been used in the Central District of California, and only
the second time that a grand jury in the U.S. has issued an
indictment under the statute. Other charges issued including
manufacturing a device for the purpose of stealing satellite
signals, and conspiracy. All three counts carry a maximum
possible sentence of five years in a federal prison. The first
two charges each carry a potential fine of $500,000, while
the conspiracy count carries a maximum fine of $250,000.

The arrests were part of a yearlong investigation called
"Operation Decrypt," which uncovered an alleged ring of
hackers that used secret online chat rooms to exchange
data and techniques to circumvent the security of Hughes
Electronics unit DirecTV and EchoStar Communications'
(Quote, Company Info) DISH Network.

"This case demonstrates our commitment to identifying and
prosecuting sophisticated computer hackers who steal the
intellectual property of others for their own economic
benefit," said United States Attorney Deborah W. Yang. "No
matter how sophisticated the criminals are, we will uncover
the devices they create and the strategies they use to
steal the lifeblood of the business community."

Yang said the alleged pirates caused millions of dollars in
losses to DirecTV and DISH Network, as well as NDS and
NagraStar, developers and suppliers of proprietary
encryption and smart card technology for DirecTV and DISH
Network respectively. Additionally, Yang said the Motion
Picture Association of America (MPAA) loses millions of
dollars every year in unpaid royalties when satellite
programming is stolen.

One of the accused, software and hardware developer
Randyl Walter, 43, of West Los Angeles, pleaded guilty on
Dec. 18, 2002, to manufacturing satellite signal decryption
devices and also admitted to causing more than $14.8
million in losses to satellite companies.

Among those charged with violating the DMCA are:

Chad Fontenot, 26, of Richmond, Kentucky, arrested
Tuesday morning on charges of conspiracy, satellite
signal theft and violating the DMCA for designing and
manufacturing hardware devices. Fontenot, a
software and hardware developer who was known by
the screen names "FreeTV" and "FreeTV2," was
indicted on Jan. 23, 2003, but the losses caused by
his alleged activities have not yet been determined.
Jason Hughes, 19, of Mocksville, North Carolina, who
has agreed to plead guilty to violating the DMCA for
developing and distributing software designed to
circumvent smart cards for DirecTV. Hughes, a
software developer who was arrested Tuesday
morning, said he made $50,000 selling his software to
individuals in Canada.
Edward Vanderziel, 35, of Ontario, California, was
indicted on Jan. 23, 2003, on charges of conspiracy,
manufacturing signal theft devices and violating the
DMCA. Losses caused by Vanderziel's alleged activities
remain undetermined. Vanderziel is a software
developer who allegedly sold monthly subscriptions for
software code for circumventing DirecTV's conditional
access technologies
Michael Whitehead, 37, of Boca Raton, Florida,
indicted on Jan. 23, 2003, on charges of conspiracy,
manufacturing satellite signal theft devices and
violating the DMCA for his alleged nationwide
distribution of devices for circumventing the
conditional access technologies in smart cards. Losses
caused by Whitehead's alleged activities remain
undetermined.
Peter DeForest, 30, of Seadrift, Texas, indicted on
Jan. 30, 2003, on charges of manufacturing satellite
signal theft devices and charges under the DMCA for
manufacturing "unloopers" which are used to
circumvent smart card technology.
Linh Ly, 38, of Rosemead, California, who agreed
Tuesday to plead guilty to violating the DMCA and
distributing decryption hardware that caused a loss of
$561,507.48.
Richard Seamans, 52, of Chino Hills, California, who
was indicted on Jan. 30, 2003 on charges of violating
the DMCA and distributing decryption devices.

Others arrested in Operation Decrypt include:

Software developer Daniel Wilson, 33, of Houston,
who has plead guilty to manufacturing satellite signal
theft devices. Wilson developed freeware for circumventing conditional access
technologies that was widely distributed on the Internet.
Stephen Thornton, 36, of Redondo Beach, California, 36, who has plead guilty to

Blizzard of '66. And one of the less attractive things about heavy snow

the client name that I wanted to get out as soon as possible.

I went through an install with someone over IRC last night and made a
blog entry summarizing the install notes. I recommend reading the notes

Many of them switched dorm rooms around, resulting in de facto creation 
of segregated dorm halls. White students avoided these ghettoes, for 
good reason. (I interviewed in 1971 for a "R.A." (resident assistant) 
position, to help with living costs, and my negro interviewer only 
asked my questions about  what "CORE" was, what "SNCC" was, etc. My 
answers were PC enough, and I was turned down. More and more of the 
R.A.s were negroes by 1973.)

Special departments were created to handle the surge in negro students: 
Black Studies was the main one, with Sociology expanded to teach 
classes about the oppression and the marginalization of the black 
race," blah blah. Swahili was the language they took to meet the 
minimal foreign language requirements. There were no negroes in my math 
or physics classes.

They were active, however, in student government. One of them, a woman 
named Judy McClellan, used to hop up on the conference tables in the 
student government meetings and walk up and down, ranting and screaming 
at the non-negro, non-Hispanic students. She once, according to 
reporters for the student newspaper who were in the meeting, had her 
negro aides stand at the doors so she could tell the council that 
"nobody is leaving until you pass this" (something about funding for 
her programs, etc.).

The next year the President of the student council, one Robert Norris, 
flashed a revolver at white students who were opposing one of his 
resolutions. When this was reported in the campus newspaper, bails of 
the newspapers were thrown into the lagoon by negroes.

I wrote all of this up in a letter which I sent in June of 1973 to the 
Regents of the University of California. I included descriptions of 
many of the atrocities, including the shakedown of funds from white 
students to go to bogus inner city youth programs (including purchase 
of a $2500 "rare" comic book about negroes, a comic book which nobody 
could later produce to investigators). I described the "La Raza Libre" 
Hispanic gang on campus, the MeCHA rival gang, the Black Pride 
contingent, the Black Students Union, etc.

The Regents replied that what I had reported was known to them, but 
that we live in troubled times, blah blah. I did get a signed letter 
back from Governor Reagan's top assistant saying they were adding my 
report to the list of reported problems. The campus newspaper ran my 
letter in full, and it triggered a minor firestorm. I became sort of 
the "right wing mascot" for a few months. I got a few death threats, 
too, and met with the Chancellor to discuss the issues I'd raised. He 
agreed with all of my points, clucked about the black and Mexican 
gangs, but said, echoing the Regents, that we live in troubled times.

It was clear to me at the time that the focus on "black pride" was 
destructive of _real_ pride. Instead of excelling in math or science, 
or even law or English or whatever, many of them went into dead-end 
fields like Black Studies and Swahili. (My nearby university today is 
UCSC, which has similar programs in Women's Studies, Queer Studies, and 
History of Consciousness. While a few actual scholars no doubt will 
come out of such studies, a lot of the graduates will be waitressing at 
local restaurants, their degrees in Women's Studies of no use in 
Silicon Valley or anywhere else.)

I think of it as evolution in action. Of course, sometimes evolution 
needs to be helped along a bit.
