Re: RV: [darktable-dev] CAN NOT OPEN FOLDERS

2021-02-24 Thread KOVÁCS István
It has just occurred to me: have you tried disabling OpenCL before
importing photos? A bad graphics driver could cause the issue you
experience (processing hanging indefinitely).
It can be toggled in settings, see here:
https://darktable.gitlab.io/doc/es/cpugpumemory.html
So, again, start with a clean profile so no photos are in the DB and
no processing occurs; disable OpenCL; try importing. If it works,
we'll know it's your graphics driver that's causing the problem.

Hi Jim,

Thank you.

What I see is that you all know a lot about computers sytems; I know nothing.
So, first of all I want to be sure I don´t make something worse.

I have doubts about the 1st. step:

"1/ make sure darktable is not running and then rename the file C:\Users\[your
user name]\AppData\local\darktable to something else. Now start darktable."

* What I saw is that I only can rename it by editing it on the searching bar.
Is that ok?

**Do I have to change this ? " C:\Users\Do I have to rename my user name
?\AppData\local\darktable to something else.

Thank you.

Susana,

I am sorry that you are still having problems. Having looked at the screen
shots you posted recently I have an idea as to what the problem may be. To
find out please try the following steps. These repeat some of the things you
have tried before, but we need to be sure that there is nothing left over from
previous attempts.

1/ make sure darktable is not running and then rename the file C:\Users\[your
user name]\AppData\local\darktable to something else. Now start darktable.

2/ when darktable starts it will ask about installing the lua scripts as you
have seen before. It is important that you answer this question and I am
afraid that you probably have to do this in English! Click on the little
downward triangle where it says 'install scripts'. This will open the drop
down menu from which I suggest you select 'don't show again'. Now click on the
button below which says 'execute'. I think this is perhaps where you have gone
wrong before as it looks like you tried to import some photos without answering
this question.

3/ Now we will check that darktable is handling the lock files correctly by
ending darktable by clicking on the X in the top right hand corner.

4/ Now count to 10 to let darktable complete its housekeeping. Now try to
start dartable again. Hopefully it starts ok in which case the lock from the
previous run was released. This time you shouldn't be asked about about the
lua scripts. You might want to select Spanish language now in the
configuration. Then you can terminate darktable again.

5/ Now we should try importing some images. Create a new test folder
somewhere and place a few image files in it. Make sure it is just image files
without any .xmp files from previous. Now start darktable and try to import
the images in this test folder. If this works try exiting darktable, counting
to 10 (as I said earlier darktable does some housekeeping before it releases
the lock files so we need to give it a bit of time) and starting darktable
again. Hopefully you can find the image files again in darktable.

Let me know how you get on.

Jim

It is NOT important to answer this question. This is simply an installer
to install the OPTIONAL lua-scripts. It in NO WAY affects darktable's
ability to process images. If you look at Bruce Williams latest youtube
video, you can see it minimized down in the corner because he has simply
chosen to ignore it, which you can too. And, yes I am certain it works
this way because I wrote it.

Hi Susana,

My Spanish is poor, but I get the idea from my years of Latin 52 years ago.

You need to see Toto in that drop down box (if toto means "all")

I do not know why the Data base is blocked.

I apologise for coming late to this thread. I am pretty sure that Susana has
used the option in the light-table to select folder, and having done so
expected her images to open in the light-table. The failure of the images to
display could be caused by the View dropdown at the top left of Light-table
being set to anything except "all". The "rating" may be set to one star when
the images have not had stars applied. In this case the folder is opening but
the options are preventing the display of the contents, and that would feel
like the folder is not opening.

I have caught myself in this scenario a few times.

Hope this helps

Andrew

In a previous post it was suggested to force darktable to create a new
profile (I don't remember the exact terms).
It was an excellent idea but as far as I know you did not give a feedback.

To do that (in the case you use Windows 10, otherwise the procedure
might be slightly different), close darktable if it is running, then
use Windows Explorer and browse to C:\Users\\AppData\Local.
Note that AppData is a hidden folder and you have either to make
hidden files/folders visible or to type the path in the navigation
bar.
There you will see a folder named "darktable". Rename it to whatever
you want, e.g. "darktable.old".
Run darktable and a new folder "darktable" should have been created in
C:\Users\\AppData\Local.

Then check if darktable now works as it should. In this case the
problem is solved. It means that the your old profile was corrupted. I
don't believe it is possible to fix it and you'll have to reimport all
your pictures.

Nevertheless, in your old profile there might be files named
- data.db-snp-MMDDHHMMSS & library.db-snp-MMDDHHMMSS, which I
guess are snapshots,
- data.db-pre-x.y.z & library.db-pre.x.y.z that seem (just my guess)
to be backup of data.db & library.db before installing darktable
version x.y.z
You might try to experiment very carefully with these, from the newest

Hi Susana,

My Spanish is poor, but I get the idea from my years of Latin 52 years ago.

You need to see Toto in that drop down box (if toto means "all")

I do not know why the Data base is blocked.

I apologise for coming late to this thread. I am pretty sure that
Susana has used the option in the light-table to select folder, and
having done so expected her images to open in the light-table. The
failure of the images to display could be caused by the View dropdown
at the top left of Light-table being set to anything except "all".
The "rating" may be set to one star when the images have not had stars
applied. In this case the folder is opening but the options are
preventing the display of the contents, and that would feel like the
folder is not opening.

I have caught myself in this scenario a few times.

Hope this helps

feedback.

I have absolutely no idea if it will work. And if it works I have

also correct but they are not generated before installing but when

OK. If darktable has imported the pictures, one .xmp file has been
created beside each picture file in the directory you imported from.
Do you see these .xmp file with Windows Explorer?

Well that means that darktable was able to import your pictures. Is
there a .xmp for every picture file? If a file is missing its .xmp
maybe there is a problem with that picture (corrupted, wrong
extension, ...).

On windows you can redirect the output to a file and that does work i.e.
"C:\Archivos de Programa\darktable\bin\darktable" -d all > output.txt

Note that today I installed darktable on a Windows laptop just to see
if I can help with the issue. I ran it with
darktable -d all
but got absolutely no output on the console (Windows 10). That is not
how it behaves on Linux.

BTW, the invocation would need the 'bin' subdirectory and the name of
the executable, so:
"C:\Archivos de Programa\darktable\bin\darktable" -d all
I actually changed to the directory first:
cd "C:\Archivos de Programa\darktable\bin"
and then used
darktable -d all

so now do:

open a command window, lower left icon, click, type cmd

  in that window:
"C.\Archivos de Programa\darktable" -d all

let it continue until you no more output in the "command window"

copy the last several lines from the "command window" and provide them for
us to see.

this is the first step, there will be more.

I doubt darktable is installed in c:\users\dasrktable (why with an 's'?).
It is probably installed in "c:\Program or something like that
depending on the version of your Windows.

Hi,

I answer Laurent:

"if you try to import pictures always from the same drive / directory,
maybe your drive / directory is corrupted or it has a huge number of
pictures or it is slow. In that case, I suggest to copy some of the
pictures to *another drive (USB or so)* and to try to import from
there. If it works then the source of the problem is identified."

I copied the folder to a USB and it happens the same. I import the folder but
It doesn´t open the pictures.

Hi,

Then, if the "culprit" drive / directory is the one you really want to
use, I believe your technician can help you to clean or replace it.

Keep in mind that when darktable "imports" pictures it just adds
informations about these pictures into its database, but it doesn't
copy the file pictures into another drive/directory. That's why after
the test I've suggested you should "remove" the pictures fro
darktable's database to avoid getting skulls after you've disconnect
the test drive / erased the test directory.

OK. If darktable has imported the pictures, one .xmp file has been
created beside each picture file in the directory you imported from.
Do you see these .xmp file with Windows Explorer?

Susana, I am sorry you are having so much trouble. You are very brave to keep
trying. I am not a developer, and I do not run dt on windows, but if I had
your issue, I would open a console window (start | type "CMD" upper case,
without the quotes in the "Type here to search" box) then try to execute dt by
typing "darktable" (without the quotes) in the console window. Then dt should
open. Make the error occur, switch back to the console window and look at the
messages near its bottom. There may be a clue, such as " not found" or
maybe something is too old a version. If dt will not open from the console
window, that may indicate that dt is not in the path. Should it be? I don't
know, but that is a different problem. I would try the above first. Let's see
what the smart people have to say about this.

Hi,

If you try to import pictures always from the same drive / directory,
maybe your drive / directory is corrupted or it has a huge number of
pictures or it is slow. In that case, I suggest to copy some of the
pictures to *another drive (USB or so)* and to try to import from
there. If it works then the source of the problem is identified.

Then, if the "culprit" drive / directory is the one you really want to

Re: RV: [darktable-dev] CAN NOT OPEN FOLDERS

2021-02-16 Thread KOVÁCS István
Hello,

I honestly think this thread should be on the users' list, not on the
devs'. BTW, Susana, there's a lively forum at discuss.pixls.us, where
it's much easier to share screenshots, for example.
With that out of the way: removing (uninstalling) darktable only
removes the program, but does not wipe the data. If your configuration
is invalid or your database files are broken (e.g. because of the many
abrupt terminations while importing), they will remain.
Your configuration file would be at
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\darktable\darktablerc; the database
should be next to it.
Debug logs: https://www.darktable.org/about/faq/#faq-windows-logs

You could try (with darktable closed) renaming the darktable folder in
AppData\Local to something else (e.g. darktable.backup), and start
with a clean slate.
You could also run the from command-line with the -d (debug) option to
see where it gets stuck. See
https://www.darktable.org/usermanual/en/special-topics/program-invocation/darktable/

BTW, how many images are you trying to import? If you create a new
folder, put a single image in it, can that be imported? Are your
images on your computer, or on a network?

Re: RV: [darktable-dev] CAN NOT OPEN FOLDERS

2021-02-16 Thread Dimitri Gathy
There are a lot of changes in the new Dt 2.4.x... You must read, at least,
the manual & follow some videos about it! To make appear the "gears"
mentioned by W.Fetrgusson, do Ctrl-shift + T & then you can access the
"gears", the basic configuration of Dt. But you must know what you are
going to do! Ps: clic "h" in Dt gives you a summary of the shortcuts, you
must know!
When you import a folder, before, try to open it outside Dt, in explorer,
do you see the images? When you stop Dt while it is running, you need to
wait for it to stop completely (or stop it manually... your microsoft tech
knows how to do it) otherwise, you always have the same message when you
restart it. Also, i don't know what's your previous version of Dt, but it
can take a lot of time to convert the database used by Dt. Again you need
to read the new manual!

I answer your questions:

download it from https://gitforwindows.org<https://gitforwindows.org/>. I
don't think that installing the lua scripts will help with your darktable
folder opening problem.

What folder are your pictures in? Are there other folders under the main one
that also contain pictures?
Both cases: The folder opens but the pictures doesn t finish opening. they stay
" processing" So, as I can´ t work, I close Darktable. But that pictures,
continue processing and Darktable closes in a wrong way. It stays opened
background. After that, I try to open Darktable and I can´t. It appers the
message to delete that LOCK files. I delete them and the same story.

If you are trying to just import the top level folder and get all of the
pictures, do you have the recursive option checked in the settings (gear wheel
at the upper right of the lighttable)? I don´t understand what you mean. I
don´t see any gear wheel

When you try to import the folder, how do you do it? Click the folder button
at the top left, then use the file finder to click on a folder containing
pictures, then click open? Yes, I always did and do like you say.
Import folder, at the top left , and open folder. But pictures doesn t finish
opening.

What I can t understand, is that I uninstalled and re intsalled a new version,
and the same problem.
Yesterday I was 2 hours with the Microsoft technitian but windows is ok.
We can ´t find the solution and told me that the program has a failure. But I
don´t understand because for months I didn´t have any problem.

Re: RV: [darktable-dev] CAN NOT OPEN FOLDERS

2021-02-16 Thread susana gastelumendi
Hi,

Continue with same problem.
Also, I unistalled version 3.4.0 and install new one : 3.4.1
The same problem continues. Does not open folders-- close app_ appears message
to delete Lock files--- delete them and always the same vicious circle.

Perhaps should I install the lua scripts ???
When I chose a choice to install them. it apeears the message : · install
git and be sure it is in your path".
I don´t know what I have to do.

Thank you.

Re: RV: [darktable-dev] CAN NOT OPEN FOLDERS

2021-02-15 Thread William Ferguson
git is the version control software used to maintain darktable. You can
download it from https://gitforwindows.org. I don't think that installing
the lua scripts will help with your darktable folder opening problem.

What folder are your pictures in? Are there other folders under the main
one that also contain pictures? If you are trying to just import the top
level folder and get all of the pictures, do you have the recursive option
checked in the settings (gear wheel at the upper right of the lighttable)?

When you try to import the folder, how do you do it? Click the folder
button at the top left, then use the file finder to click on a folder
containing pictures, then click open?

Can you access your drive outside Dt? Do you change the path of the image's

if she cannot open the directories to begin with, how would she
"re-import" w/o using the commandline? and that doesn't appear to be an
option within her repertoire.

Hi.

I already did that: removed the two lock files, only the lock files.

But I open Darktable, and the same Impossible to open folders and again the
message to remove that lock files.

I also, reboot the computes, unistall, re install the program and the same
sotry. Not open, message to remove files.

Imposibble to open folders.

Thank you

not a dev, but

sounds like you have stopped darktable improperly, crashed, or ... and the
library.db and data.db are still locked. you can remove the locks by
going to the directory where they are located, show hidden files and
remove the two lock files. only the lock files, not the library.db or
data.db. I do not run windows and do not know where these files are on
you system. your windows search-files might help.

Hi,

Like Patrick said you should delete the file data.db.lock. look at the
screenshot to find the path.

Cheers
