[darktable-user] DT 4.0 - show all images ? problem

2022-07-12 Thread Francesco Scaglioni

Hi,

I have failed to find the answer for this but apologies if I have missed
it.  Historically I have had DT set zero stars on import ( I then add 1
star to images I might want to look further at, 2 starts for images that
I am working on etc etc ).

I cannot find a way to show images with 1 star at the same time as all
unstared / not yet assessed images.

Is there an easy solution or should I try and re-work my workflow ?

Interesting.  I disabled filmic and pushed the black level up ( RGB
levels ) until the darkest part of the image showed 1,1,0 ( Colour
picker ).  That area was showing as underexposed ( Blue in my case ).  I
then re-engaged filmic, the chosen area then registered as 0.0.0 but the
underexposure / blue warning disappeared for that area.  Almost as if
filmic, under certain circumstances, is disabling the underexposure

actually doing - quite possible ).

Try the negadoctor module. Type negadoctor in the search module spot. In the
upper right hand corner, select "black and white film" from the drop-down menu.

For some reason, this module does not show up in the default suggested modules.

Hope this module does what you want. I have just played with it.

What I want from this app, or for that matter some other app I'm apparently

Is this the right app for me? Thanks for any advice,

*full* raw sample set for your camera under CC0 license! - Almost 2680
commits to darktable+rawspeed since 3.4 - 954 pull requests handled -
290 issues closed ## The Big Ones - Full rework of the import module.
The new module allows you to see thumbnails of your images before
import and makes it easier to handle multiple import tasks. The same
dialog is now used for importing from disk, card or camera. When
importing "in-place", images that are already present in darktable are
flagged and can be automatically excluded from the import. Importing
from a local drive won't use gphoto and so should work more reliably
on Windows. - A vector-scope is added to complement the current
histogram, waveform and parade views. - A new default demosaic
algorithm (RCD) has been introduced, which should provide better
quality than the current default (PPG) without the long run- times of
AMaZE. the order of the demosaic algorithms has also been adjusted for
clarity. - Support for "dual demosaic" has also been added, allowing
you to combine "RCD + VNG4" and "AMaZE + VNG4" for bayer sensors, for
xtrans sensors there is "Markesteijn 3-pass + VNG". This allows you to
use an algorithm better resolving fine detail and another one
delivering smoother output depending on local image content. - You can
now create an opacity mask based on the sharpness of the image. This
uses a similar algorithm to that used in dual demosaic. - Drawn shapes
are drawn on the original RAW image and then distorted through the
pixelpipe. This previously led to, for example, circles becoming
ellipses (due to lens distortion) after being placed on the image. All
drawn shapes can now be pre-visualized and moved prior to placement,
with full deformation applied. This makes the editing of masks easier
fully WYSIWYG. - A new Color Balance RGB module has been added. This
can be used as a one stop module for all color grading work. - A new
censorize module has been added. This allows you to hide parts of the
image by adding a blur/pixelization. - A new crop module has been
added. This new module has been added late in the pixelpipe and makes
it possible to use cropped parts of the image for source spots in the
retouch module, for example. - A new section has been added to the
color calibration module to allow you to calibrate colors using a
color checker chart. - The map module has been enhanced in a number of
ways: - When importing a GPX the trace can be displayed. - Location
can be set using polygons and directly created from information
reported by Open Street Map. As a reminder, all locations create tags
automatically for images placed into the area. - The basic adjustments
module has been replaced with the quick access panel, which can be
used to group controls from multiple different modules in one place.

In Bruce's excellent video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7adCF2FvU8
at 6 mins 10 => ) the long axis dimension is shown.

If a raw image is cropped during "developing" then at present the final
image size cannot be see from any lightable view apart from
theoretically in export for print module.  In the video max image
dimension is autopopulated into the relevant field.  In my installation
that data entry box remains at zero.  At the same time the "Export
width" and "Export height" fields under "Image information" ( on the
left ) remain empty.  ( See attached ).  What I am trying to find is an
indication of the max available dimensions without having to open the
image in darkroom mode and fiddle with the crop module.

Any suggestions much appreciated

I've never understood why photo editing software needs to include the

Re: [darktable-user] Images disapear when switching from Darkroom to lightable view

2020-09-26 Thread Francesco Scaglioni
FWIW : darktable 3.2.1 from ubuntu repos on a dell desktop.  Nvidia
driver and opencl working.  Sometimes ( I cannot yet blame a specific
module ) when finished with am image, press L to return to filemanager (
I never use light table ) and I am presented wiht a uniform grey
rectangle filling the space where the thumbnails should be.  This slab
of grey does not respond to either keyboard or mouse input.  Solution :
select a previous film roll ( images appear stat ) then reselct the
current roll ( images also appear stat - ie no processing delay ).  The
issue is intermittent and I have not yet figured out a consistent set of
circumstances.  There is an issue - albeit a trivial one with an easy
work around.

Slightly OT : "Rapid photo downloader" ( Damon Lynch ) - all images in

To go back to the previous behaviour, you need to add a filter on the
collection to only consider "group leaders" in the grouping - then
whatever you do only applies to the "group leader" of the group, which
in your case (and mine ;) ) would be the RAW file.

Perhaps, since the developers assure us

Hi,

An old chestnut but hoping there may be a solution now. I need to move a

They are organised by folder :

  /160124-another-project etc etc
2016/1602-February/160215-project

What I would like to do is simply just move the 2016 folder.

Thus not have to manually recreate a folder structure, open every folder
again in DT to confirm xmp files exist, remove all images ( a folder at a
time from the database ), move them a folder at a time and then re-import
them. !

There must be a easier way

Any suggestions much appreciated.

if you are moving *all* which contain "/2016/" in the directory/file
structure, consider:
   in lighttable view
 collect images reset parameters
 collect images folders %/2016/%
 select select all
 selected imagesremove

move the complete structure "/2016/*" to the new location

   in lighttable view
 import
 folder choose new location: xxx/xxx/2016

to hedge against mistakes, make a copy of your library.db before starting
and copy your images to the new location rather than moving them.

if all appears to be as desired, delete the old location images and the
library.db copy

Thanks so much for the quick reply. I'll run a couple of backups and then
will give it a go.

backups are always good, but not always necessary. you just need a backup
(or copy) of ~/.config/darktable/library.db and to retain your present
photo structure until satisfied with the move.

ps: unless containing private/sensitive information conversations should
remain on list where other interested might follow.

ps1: there is another way to accomplish your move but probably somewhat
slower and maybe safer but safer is debatible. instead of "remove" the
images after selecting all, you could "move" the images using dt as the
file handler. you can even create the new file structure with dt.
personally, I would do as I first stated. I believe it will be safe
  and much faster.

ps2: and I might even be an "older chestnut" :)

ymmv, gud luk

Hopefully, you a backup.

1. Restore from the library.db from before the move
2. lighttable > collect > folders

Would that help?

I copied 2016 and 2017 ( with sub-dirs ) to the correct locations.
Swapped in the " new " DT db ans replaced it with the old one and tried
the above and ended up with a screen full of skulls (::

However I am not sure exactly what the above should achieve ( mu failing )

Does darktable have a problem with symbolic links? If not, why not have:
"/home/me/Photos/2017/..." for current year as direct storage on SSD
"/home/me/Photos/2016" as a symbolic link to "/home/me/media/photos/2016"
?
And the same for 2003--2015, so 14 folders to move, 14 symlinks to create;
sounds like a job for a bash script. Note that the number of folders under
the year is not important here.

At the end of the year:
*close DarkTable*
move /home/me/Photos/2017/... to /home/me/media/photos/
create a new directory for 2018
create a symlink for 2017

Darktable exports via a symlink to the correct target directory ( as
pointed to via the link ) fine. However if you try and delete an image
from a directory accessed by symlink then DT fails to delete the image.

Re: [darktable-user] Move to new dual drive machine advice

2017-02-05 Thread Francesco Scaglioni

Hi

If I ask DT to import recursively eg 2013 it will load the images from all
sub-folders. If I then ask DT to copy or move them to a new 2013
destination it will do so but the folder structure below the original 2013
is not recreated in the new target folder and all images end up getting
placed in the new 2013 folder root.

Francesco, did you try creating the file system first? Then try moving
recursively.

I recreated the folder structure for /home/me/photos/2003 in
/home/me/Media/MediaPhotos/2003

Imported original 2003 recursively in to DT, select all and copy to
/home/fgs/media/MediaPhotos/2003

With images going back to 2003, generally 12 sub-folders per year and then
sub-sub folders below that doing the whole thing one folder at a time would
be a real PITA.

Googling the issue resulted in a post from 2014 that suggested manually
editing the DB to change image paths - again, not only does this sound risky
but would need to be done for every folder thus not much to gain over using
the GUI. What I was looking for was a way to eg select 2013/* and move it
en bloc whilst preserving the existing directory structure below 2013.

I'll give it a go but that would still mean manually creating aprox 300
folders ( I have no scripting ability and it is far too many years since
I last wrote any perl to remeber how to do it )

move each individual directory.

I can create the new folder structure locally that is not a problem.

The existing structure is :

home//me/Photos/year/month/projects( maybe up to 4 or 5 )/? sub-projects

old system was /home/me(hdd)/Photos/***/*** etc ( Folders by year, month
and sub-project)

new system : home/me(ssd)/media(hdd)/old photos
: home/me(ssd)/something with current year image folders

I can easily move current year from within DT and preserve the DB that
way. The problem is to move /home/me/photos/old_stuff to :

/home/me/media/photos/**/**/** etc
