While I have the impresssion that teh devs *do* read this mailing list, adding
a feature request at redmine is still a good idea, so they have all bugs and
feature requests in one system with proper features for tracking etc.

Also, getting something read here is easier if the posts are reasonably
formatted. Your mail editor makes a mess of the text version: the quoted text
above is just wrapped by my client, the original fills up the full window
width, and has *no* linebreaks at all.

Not all here can/want to read HTML mail (not that that's always decently
formatted...) and not just because it's twice as big.

Perhaps some of the darktable developers could also become more familiar with
innovations being developed in other photo editing software. Style previews
have been pretty common in other tools for a few years now... Probably because
their users like them...

What if the duplicate image and apply style was automated? Say that you
had a module style preview. It displays a list of styles. You select an
image, and some styles you'd like to try, then hit apply. A duplicate is
created for each style selected and the style is applied. When you're done
you select the duplicates and then trash them.

Not what you are looking for but there is a bit easier:

- apply the slyle
- ctrl-z to undo it

Then repeat.

It makes preview of style a bit easier.

Agreed.

A full image preview would also be quite a load on your system if a style is
complex or uses modules like equalizer or profiled denoise.

But, are you using styles to see if they improve an image (or at least look
good), or are you looking for a certain effect and want to pick the closest
style?

If the latter, you shouldn't need to try out that many styles if you know your
styles library.

Intuitively, I'd expect to see a popup thumbnail when hovering above a

Would be a great feature :-)

I have never seen anything immediate. You can try to apply style then
snapshot go back in the history and apply different style and again
snapshot. But it is quite a workaround (time consuming). Some people
love styles - they have a few of these. Others end up having just few
and after that simply tweak items on the go.

I only use CaptureOne and PhotoLab, but they both do it.

In DxO PhotoLab(/OpticsPro) the Presets button shows a preview of each
style, applied to the current image, right there in the pop-up.

CaptureOne applies (a preview of?) the preset to the selected image when
hovering over the preset in the list.

simple to make a duplicate in dt (which only consists of an

maybe save examples for yourself that demonstrate what the style does,
make notes, visit the on-line style library which shows examples. and
maybe something I don't know about

Lightroom does; since it's the industry standard I'm guessing others do as
well, but I don't have direct experience.

Simple to do, but potentially time consuming if you are looking through a
bunch of presets. Is there any way to visualize multiple presets at once
(like as thumbnails or something)?

simple to make a duplicate in dt (which only consists of an xmp file and a
database entry) and apply a style. peruse the result, rinse and repeat.

[darktable-user] Style previews

2018-08-13 Thread Ryan Martinie
Is it possible to preview how various styles will look for a selected image?

It seems to me that styles are most useful for creating a starting point
for editing, i.e. selecting the base "look" of the images from a variety of
possibilities.

So, it would be nice to be able to preview thumbnails or something of what
your 20 favorite presets would look like for a given image. As I understand
it, other RAW development applications have features of this kind. Does
darktable?

Cheers,
Ryan
