I wouldn't create that many presets, finding the correct one would be a
nightmare. Maybe in your case tags/keywords are an alternative?

Hello Tobias,

I tried around a bit. Thank you very much for your hints.

In principle the presets (Voreinstellung in german) do what I want. But
are there meant to be used for such a case?

What happens if I create 200 presets - one for each album I want to
create? Therefore I'm asking: Is is meant to be used for such purposes.
I would like to suggest to make the presets or something similar visible
in the same combo box where I select filmroll or folder or ..

The collect module supports presets.

Rate the bad ones with less stars and filter on that in the end.

Hello Remco,

thanks a lot for your answer:

I understand that I can select a filmroll and make an AND-search on e.g.
pictures with a yellow tag. But I do not see a way to store the this
virtual filmroll so that it appears somewhere as further filmroll or so.

I agree completely with the exporting, you're so right. I need to export
anyhow

Let me give you an example:

I'm importing a new set of pictures, usually I'm taking three pictures
of the same kind with different exposures, so I need to select the best
of each kind and somehow cover the others, but I do not want to delete
them. And of course I'm covering really bad ones too. So what can I do
to hide the unused pics?

On the other side I would like to put some pictures in a "virtual"
folder (e.g. "best pictures of 2017"), so I can export them to my
digital picture frame. I'm just afraid tagging good pictures in one
color or so is ok, but I will forget to which virtual album they belong.

Do you understand my concern?

This may sound harsh, but if you have to correct 500 folders, it looks like
you made a serious error in your initial setup.

*If* those albums correspond to physical folders on the hard disk, the best
thing might be to start from scratch:
- make a backup of your current structure *and* of the current Darktable
database (in case something goes wrong)
- quit darktable and drop the current database,
- rename the folder structure to what you want
- re-import everything in Darktable.

All relevant data concerning each image are normally stored within the XMP
files Darktable writes. That means that edits and geotagging will be recovered
on the new import (see section 2.2.7 of the manual).
___

WRT one of your other questions about creating virtual albums:
that is possible (see "Collect images", section 2.3.2), but those collections
are /virtual/, i.e. have no existence outside the Darktable database. What I

expect you work with raw files, so you will have to export your images anyway
after editing to show them.

As that directory tree and the images in it are outside Darktable's data, you
can also reorganise them at a later date with no problems.

2017-04-11 Thread August Schwerdfeger
I was talking about editing the database directly, outside of Darktable,
using SQL commands -- potentially dangerous, but the only viable way I
could find to relocate several hundred film rolls without re-importing
everything in them.

As far as I know, the Darktable database schema is not documented, but you
can use the 'sqlite3' command-line tool to examine your database for
yourself.

now I think, moving was the correct choice.

Still a few questions:
1. Is there an easy way to make something like albums? I mean
something like a new folder with links to some selected pics, so that
I have a subselection? Background of this question is the fact, that
I'm using my TV with DLNA support as digital picture-frame. It would
be very nice if I could tag some pictures and a new folder per tag
appears containing each picture link. I guess darktable does not offer
such a solution right? Possible to make some scripts?
2. I understand that darktable is not meant to be a used for
filesystem stuff. Anyhow I'm missing a possibility to rename a
filmroll. I tried out, renaming a filmroll in the filesystem is
possible but then darktable needs to re-import the folder. Is there an
other way? Actually, I really have a lot of problems as I didn't do
the naming of my filmrolles accurately, In iphoto I had one indicating
photo and this was enough. Is there any plan going on to change
darktable for a better usability, here. Maybe I'm just
misunderstanding the concept. Currently I have more than 30k pics from
the last years imported as roughly 1000 filmrolls. So I'm just asking,
what do you do to find a picture??
3. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to recover the modifications I did to
the pictures. Luckily I didn't do much, as iPhotos feasibilty is very
limited, but Especially, I set thousands of geotags in the
picutures manually, which I would like to keep. I think I would be
able with some scriping magic to read in this information from iPhoto.
Is there an easy way to tell darktable "please use these geotags for
these pictures"? E.g. I saw one can provide a file with the exif_date
and the geotag and darktable will set the geotag to the corresponding
picture. So is it possible to do this on a larger set of picture (lets
say 30k??) How should the fileformat look like?
4. I didn't found a possibility in darktable to set a geotag manually.
There is only the workaround with the mentioned file. Is there
something going on into this direction?
5. I'm missing a possibiliy to move one picture forward and backward
in the darkroom. Using the mouse on the lower part is very slow. Is
there a keyboard shortcut?

Thanks a lot in advance

For all intents and purposes "filmroll" is just a fancy name for
"folder". More
precisely the last level of the hierarchy. So in order to have the
filmrolls

named after the descriptions from iPhoto you have to rename the folders
accordingly. If you want to take over metadata like georeferencing I
would
create an XMP file for the images before importing them with the

I saw that feature to correct one folder in the docs, already. But I'm

From the docs:

  updating folder path

While it is best to not touch imported files behind darktable's back,
this module can help you recover from situations when you move
imported folders after import. The collect images module has a
feature that allows you to tell darktable about the new location of
imported folders which have been moved. You set the combobox to
/folders/ to find the original folder name in the tree. The folder
name will be displayed striked-out to emphasize that it is no longer
there. Then you right-click on the folder name, select “search
filmroll...”, and then select the new location of the folder.

Hello, thanks for your answser.

I'm not sure if I understand you correctly.

How do you edit the database? Opening darktable and then correcting the
folder paths as mentioned in the docs? Or is there a way to start
darktable using some parameters in order to correct some paths?

If not would it be very hard to program a small tool working on the
console to move the folder in the filesystem AND correcting the path in
the database? Is there any doc how the database is organized. I can
volunteer to do some programing, too

Hello,

I finally managed to move from iPhoto to darktable by using the software
"phoshare" on the mac and a lot of bash-programming on linux. Now I'm starting
to use darktable and see how powerful it is. Already now I think, moving was
the correct choice.

Still a few questions:
1. Is there an easy way to make something like albums? I mean something like a
new folder with links to some selected pics, so that I have a subselection?
Background of this question is the fact, that I'm using my TV with DLNA support
as digital picture-frame. It would be very nice if I could tag some pictures
and a new folder per tag appears containing each picture link. I guess
darktable does not offer such a solution right? Possible to make some scripts?
2. I understand that darktable is not meant to be a used for filesystem stuff.
Anyhow I'm missing a possibility to rename a filmroll. I tried out, renaming a
filmroll in the filesystem is possible but then darktable needs to re-import
the folder. Is there an other way? Actually, I really have a lot of problems as
I didn't do the naming of my filmrolles accurately, In iphoto I had one
indicating photo and this was enough. Is there any plan going on to change
darktable for a better usability, here. Maybe I'm just misunderstanding the
concept. Currently I have more than 30k pics from the last years imported as
roughly 1000 filmrolls. So I'm just asking, what do you do to find a picture??
3. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to recover the modifications I did to the
pictures. Luckily I didn't do much, as iPhotos feasibilty is very limited,
but Especially, I set thousands of geotags in the picutures manually, which
I would like to keep. I think I would be able with some scriping magic to read

Hello to everybody,

thank you very much for the very quick answers.

I think the idea with the xmp-files is brilliant. When started googleing
I found this:

https://gist.github.com/lpar/2191225

What do you think about it? Has somebody tried it out? Is is compatible
to darktable?

I'm a bit afraid to let is run overy my whole library without fully
understanding what it does. maybe I create a copy first :-)

For all intents and purposes "filmroll" is just a fancy name for "folder". More
precisely the last level of the hierarchy. So in order to have the filmrolls
named after the descriptions from iPhoto you have to rename the folders
accordingly. If you want to take over metadata like georeferencing I would
create an XMP file for the images before importing them with the data from your
sqlite db. Tools like "exiv2" and probably also "exiftool" should be able to
create such sidecar files for you.

As I understand it, film rolls in Darktable correspond directly to
filesystem directories, so if you want new names for the film rolls you
will need to rename the directories.

2016-12-21 Thread Georg Troska

Hello Hanatos,

I already tried my first importing on the dataset of the last year:

in iPhoto my photos are stored on a yearly basis followed by a daily
basis (e.g. 2016/31.10.2016/1.NEF).

So when I am importing the folder 2016 recursively I will get as many
filmrolls as there are folders in 2016 with the names of the folders. It
would be very nice if the dates would be replaced by the names that I
used in iPhoto. In iPhoto these names are stored in a sqlite3 database.
I think when I would write a small programm I could receive the names
per folder from that database. But how do I tell darktable "please
import this folder and use this name"or "please import this folder use
this name and use this geo-location"

Most of picuters are RAW (I'm using an old Nikon D50). Additionally
there are many photos I did before I figured what RAW is :-) and a
photos from the iPhone (all JPG)

importing 2000 pics worked in less than 3 minutes. I think performance
is not a problem here.

When I'm calling darktable using a folder as parameter you say it will
import this folder. What will be the name of the filmroll? Can I set it
manually?

I tried to import the "Originals" folder from my iPhoto-Library, but I do
not get a clou how I can use the filmroll concept in a usefull way

I think the filmrolls do have the meaning of events in iPhoto.. right?

hm. i have no idea about iphoto, so can't tell.

So what can I do to import my library to darktable? Is there a way to create
filmrolls from the cli? I think I could manage to acquire the information
from the sqlite3.db of iPhoto when using ruby. How can I apply further data

you can import recursively (there's a checkbox for that if you're
importing with the dt gui).

may i ask what kind of pictures that is? all jpg? different raws?
recursive import can be very slow on big collections and be very
frustrating if there is one corrupted picture that crashes the whole
process.

What I'm searching for is a shell-command like:

darktable-import --filmroll --modified --geotag

no clue what your options there suggest in terms of functionality. you
can call darktable with a folder as argument, it will be imported.

you can import recursively (there's a checkbox for that if you're
importing with the dt gui).

may i ask what kind of pictures that is? all jpg? different raws?
recursive import can be very slow on big collections and be very
frustrating if there is one corrupted picture that crashes the whole
process.
