Etch is going to be shipped with Xen linux 2.6.17 or 2.6.18, I thought
this info might have helped.

Bug#398517: latex-cjk-chinese-arphic: build times out

Package: latex-cjk-chinese-arphic
Version: 1.15
Severity: serious
Justification: FTBFS on i386, very likely to fail everywhere else

Hi,

While doing archive rebuilds to prepare the etch release, I tried to
rebuild your package many times, but never succeeded. It always times
out at various steps, even after setting the timeout value to 90 min,
which is already huge since I build on quite fast bi-opterons.

If such long time without output are normal, would it possible to add a
option to some program so that it actually outputs something ?

Log from my last try:

It had been building for more than 5 hours.

It would be great if someone could confirm this failure.

Thank you,

About the archive rebuilt: The rebuilt was done on about 30 AMD64 nodes
of the Grid'5000 platform, using a clean chroot containing an etch i386
environment (not unstable). Internet was not accessible from the build
systems. The builds were processed as root.

It should be possible to run the two application in

theoretical).
So now I will change the dependences, so that they conflicts.
Maybe in future I will change the binary name.

cryptroot is defined to run after lvm, for whatever reason. The
cryptsetup people can probably tell you why and suggest a fix.

That's not the problem (cryptsetup takes care of both post and pre-setup
of lvm if necessary). The problem is a disagreement between partman-md and
partman-crypto which results in a bogus /etc/fstab on the target fs and
after that everything goes downhill (see #393728 for more details).

Hopefully I'll have time to look into this soon or we'll have to mention
that crypto and md are not compatible in the debian-installer errata.

Bug#398522: sh-mode: double-quoted string inside command substitution

2006-11-14 Thread Leonard Michlmayr
Package: emacs21
Version: 21.4a-1
Severity: normal

In sh-mode with font-lock mode double-quoted strings inside a
double-quoted command-substitution is treated as normal text (without
quotes)

To reproduce:
$ emacs /tmp/foobar.sh
M-x sh-mode
M-x font-lock-mode
echo `echo foo bar`
echo $(echo foo bar)
echo $(echo #)

Especially the last example shows how confusing this can be: the #)
will be typeset as a comment. Bash, however, will not treat it as a
comment.

This problem doesn't seem to be specific to Debian or this version of
Emacs.

Bug#398527: autoconf: please move .m4f files into /var/...

2006-11-14 Thread Romain Lenglet
Package: autoconf
Version: 2.60a-4
Severity: wishlist

*.m4f files are automatically generated from Autoconf's .m4 files. For
instance, /usr/share/autoconf/autoconf/autoconf.m4f is (re-)generated
by executing:
(cd /usr/share/autoconf/autoconf/ ; autom4te --language=autoconf --freeze
--output=autoconf.m4f)

Therefore, this file is a good candidate to be placed into
e.g. /var/lib/autoconf/autoconf/, as for the FHS. And a soft link
should be made:
ln -s /var/lib/autoconf/autoconf/autoconf.m4f
/usr/share/autoconf/autoconf/autoconf.m4f

Idem for .../autotest/autotest.m4f, .../m4sugar/m4sh.m4f, and
/m4sugar/m4sugar.m4f.

The motivation is to let Debian packages add m4 files directly into
Autoconf's directories, and rebuild the autotest.m4f file at postinst.
Adding M4 macros directly into Autoconf is mandatory when some macros
make aclocal crash. For instance, language-support macros must have
parenthesis in their names, which makes aclocal choke. For instance,
see macro AC_LANG_PROGRAM(C) in c.m4, or AC_LANG_PROGRAM(Erlang) in
erlang.m4. Such macros *must* be added directly into Autoconf, since
they cannot be parsed by aclocal due to bugs in aclocal.

In addition, I suggest to make addition+inclusion of M4 files easier,
by adding the following line at the end of
/usr/share/autoconf/autoconf/autoconf.m4:
m4_include([/var/lib/autoconf/autoconf/autoconf-includes.m4])

And to let packages addremove m4_include([...]) lines for the files
they install, in that new
/var/lib/autoconf/autoconf/autoconf-includes.m4 file. New files
installed by packages should be installed in
/usr/share/autoconf/autoconf/, so those m4_include lines should have
the form:
m4_include([/usr/share/autoconf/autoconf/m4])

And idem for all /var/lib/autoconf/*/ directories.

This proposal would let packages install Autoconf support for new test
languages, without having to be directly included in the autoconf
package, and without having to modify the .m4f files in /usr/ at
postinst.

For my first steps in the free world, two years ago, i installed
Knoppix on this HD. So i have neither initscripts nor mount packages
but mount-aes.

I worry, if i try to replace mount-aes by initscripts and mount
to make my system unbootable... It's my main machine.

In a way it is a bug in uswsusp, because it doesn't depend on
initscripts. But changing uswsusp to do this will not help you...

If I were you I would try to install initscripts, The way you have your
system now is asking for problems. It maybe working now but you won't
get any new updates to the booting part of your system (unless you take
updates from knoppix of course).
BTW, if your are using the encrypted loopback capabilities of mount-aes,
you will need the debian loop-aes-utils package, I guess.
I'm not sure how much your system diverges from a debian system so I
can't really comment on the risks. I would guess there are more users
that upgraded their knoppix to a debian system so you could google a bit
for it.

In the mean time you can edit you can edit /etc/uswsusp.conf by hand.
Or remove the 'mountpoint' tests from the scripts:

/var/lib/dpkg/info/uswsusp.postinst
/var/lib/dpkg/info/uswsusp.config

and dpkg-reconfigure uswsusp.

When I return to this vino server, the system has lacked responsiveness: I note

If I killall -9 vino-server on the server the responsiveness goes back to its

The patch looks good, but has one rough edge: you see the frontend jump
to the default choice. It looks like the list is first displayed with the
top of the list displayed, and only then it jumps to the default and the
display is refreshed.

Would it be possible to not do the first display so that the correct part
of the list is displayed immediately and the jump effect is avoided?

This is a minor improvement though. If fixing this is not possible or too
invasive I'm happy to go with the current patch for etch.

ATM i don't see any definitive solution to this , but i have a small
workaround: what about selecting default line and then scrolling instead
of scrolling and then select default line (as it is now)?
User would perceive only scrolling effect, instead of scrolling + line
selection.

Bug#240134: severity grave

2006-11-14 Thread Willi Mann

retitle 240134 sqwebmail-de: completely out of date and unuseable
severity 240134 grave
thanks

This package is hopelessly out of date. The gif-png issue is just a
small side effect. The previous maintainer has ACKd hijacking.

I've asked racke to sponsor my completely renewed package.

In the meantime it's available from

http://wserver.wm1.at/~willi/debian/various/pool/main/s/sqwebmail-de/

Bug#398411: cvsnt: FTBFS on 64 bit arches: cannot convert 'int*' to 'SQLLEN*'

2006-11-14 Thread Andreas Tscharner

Kurt Roeckx wrote:

works. Unfortunately I have no 64bit system...

I guess it depends on what you mean with works. It will make it
build, but it'll cause problem at runtime.

You have is:
std::mapint,SQLINTEGER m_sqli
and:
typedef long SQLLEN;
typedef int SQLINTEGER;

and sizeof(long) != sizeof(int)

What looks like a better thing to do is change the SQLINTEGER to an
SQLLEN, if that's what it contains.

The attached patch makes it build for me.

Thank you for the patch. I'll make a new package this week and send the
patch to upstream.

Best regards
Andreas

Bug#395889: udev cannot be set up in a chrooted environment on 2.6.18

2006-11-14 Thread Sven Luther
Hello, ...

Well, i gave this bug a bit of a test.

on a 2.6.18 powerpc/pegasos system, which is mostly etch with sid kernels, i
tested both proposed fixes :

 if ! [ -r /proc/1/root -a /proc/1/root/ -ef /proc/self/root/ ]

returned FALSE in both cases (Well, i think i forgot the !, so it probably
did return TRUE in both cases). So, this solution is not working.

On the other hand this check :

 [ $(stat -c %d/%i /) = $(stat -Lc %d/%i /proc/1/root) ]

works fine (returning TRUE on the real system and FALSE in the chroot).

Given the critic Christoph had (warnings on pre-2.6.18, altough we hardly care
for this in etch, which will have 2.6.18), mayeb something like this :

 if [ `uname -r` -ge 2.6.18 ]
[ $(stat -c %d/%i /) = $(stat -Lc %d/%i /proc/1/root) ]; then
# WE ARE IN THE REAL SYSTEM
 else
# WE ARE IN THE CHROOT
 fi

Should be best. Well, this will not work, since uname -r will return something
like 2.6.18-2-powerpc which is not test friendly, but you get the idea.
Finding the right comparison is left as an exercice for the one which is going
to fix this bug.

Let's fix this ASAP, so we can get a fixed version uploaded to unstable, and
do some widespread tests, and then move the fixed udev and 2.6.18 kernels into
testing.

Friendly,

Sven Luther

I can generate perfectly valid PDF documents with this font embedded, at
least when using Gnumeric or Openoffice.org. And none of my applications
(including KPDF and Acroread) crashes when viewing those PDFs,
I assume that this bug is rather related to the scribus package, based
on the link you gave in the bug report.
Also, fontforge does not crash on my system when opening the font. It
just uses a lot of memory ( 512 MB RAM recommended to open the font).
Moreover, this font has been created with fontforge.

If you find a specific flaw in the font itself, please point it out.
Otherwise, please consider filing a bug report to the scribus package
and ask the maintainer to apply the fix from the scribus CVS.

Thanks

icedove transition didn't include the appropriate transition of enigmail, ie.
signed and encrypted mail is broken on my etch box.

This should be resolved as soon as new enigmail package moved to etch.

If you receive an update of enigmail and it still does not work, let
me know.

Bug#398536: radvd fails to upgrade if it does not like interface configuration

2006-11-14 Thread Meelis Roos
Package: radvd
Version: 1:1.0-1
Severity: normal

Setting up radvd (1.0-1) ...
Starting radvd: [Nov 14 11:48:37] radvd: no linklocal address configured for
eth3
[Nov 14 11:48:37] radvd: error parsing or activating the config file:
/etc/radvd.conf failed.
invoke-rc.d: initscript radvd, action start failed.
dpkg: error processing radvd (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

Maybe radvd should not fail installation when startup fails - this is one
problem.

Another problem is what to do with interfaces that are currently not connected
like my eth3:

eth3 does not have a link-local address since it's currently not connected
(NO-CARRIER).
Other interfaces are connected and do have link-local address.

6: eth3: NO-CARRIER,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast qlen 1000

inet xxx.xxx.xxx.66/28 brd xxx.xxx.xxx.79 scope global eth3
inet6 2001:::3::1/64 scope global tentative
 valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever

in interfaces file, eth3 is described as a normal static ipv4 block plus

iface eth3 inet6 static
address 2001:::3::1
netmask 64

radvd.conf contains only

interface eth2
{
 AdvSendAdvert on;
 prefix 2001:::2::/64
 {

};

interface eth3
{
 AdvSendAdvert on;

Bug#398571: gnu-smalltalk: FTBFS on GNU/kFreeBSD

Package: gnu-smalltalk
Severity: important
Version: 2.1.8-2.1

Hi,

the current version fails to build on GNU/kFreeBSD.

It needs small change to configure.in/configure in sigsegv subdir.
Please find attached patch with that.

It would also be nice if you can ask upstream
to include this changes.

Thanks in advance

This is why I cannot rely on GNU make and need a working and highly portable

Bug#398466: hostapd 0.5.5-3 serious regression with madwifi

On Tuesday 14 November 2006 08:43, Kel Modderman wrote:
Package: hostapd

Justification: renders package unusable

The subtle changes between 0.5.5-2 and 0.5.5-3 have exposed a
showstopping bug when used in conjunction with certain madwifi driver
versions (specifically 0.9.2+r1784.20061027-1 currently in debian).

This should not pass into testing, where 0.5.5-2 is working perfectly.

Further information will follow.

It is exactly this problem:

http://lists.shmoo.com/pipermail/hostap/2006-October/014354.html

I propose that we revert recent backport of fixes/enhancements to the
driver_madwifi code, so that we can at leas take advantage of the partial
hostapd support (everything != plaintext) that has proven to be working well
in the released version 0.5.5.

Thanks, Kel.

Yes, this is a known deficiency of the documentation. You can try Option

Bug#398541: Errors reported while parsing UTF-8 encoded sites

2006-11-14 Thread Michael Tautschnig
Package: checkbot
Version: 1.77-1
Severity: minor

While scanning our sites, checkbot reports:

Parsing of undecoded UTF-8 will give garbage when decoding entities at
/usr/bin/checkbot line 1159, CURRENT line 316.

(the latter line ... varies of course). As stated on
http://search.cpan.org/dist/HTML-Parser/Parser.pm
this is probably a bug in checkbot as it should set the appropriate options.

Bug#370295: sun-java must not provide java2-runtime

2006-11-14 Thread Steve Langasek
severity 370295 important
thanks

The rationale given for reopening this bug was:

The SWT example suggests that it is OK to reimplement large parts of the
Java API and configure Sun's Java to run with it, but the plain language
 of the license prohibits it.

Even though the license text appears to prohibit this, and even though the
license text asserts that the FAQ is non-binding, we have:

- a statement from upstream (in the FAQ) that the DLJ does not prohibit
distributing sun-java5 together with eclipse, which implies it does not
prohibit distributing it together with SWT
- an upstream liaison who understands Debian packaging and how these
packages are put together and who, after reviewing this bug report, closed
it with the statement that these issues have been addressed.

It is also debatable whether Debian has combined, configured, or
distributed the Software to run in conjunction with any additional software
that implements the same or similar functionality or APIs as the Software.
We are distributing the software in such a way that a user can opt to
combine them, but even though sun-java5 is listed as providing
java2-runtime, on a default Debian system non-free is not even listed in the
apt configuration.

I'm not going to claim that there are no bugs in the way this package is
currently licensed; lack of clarity is always a bug. But I don't believe
there is anything here that warrants holding the package out of the release
-- and upstream apparently agrees.

As this happens on postrm purge, this isn't even a case of a missing
dependency, because a dependency or even a pre-dependency is insufficient.
But since update-modules is from module-init-tools, which is of Priority:
important, this is also in the same class as ucf or debconf usage in the
postrm, which we are considering non-RC for etch.

Bug#398594: libpisock-dev: Undocumented api changes breaks other software

2006-11-14 Thread Sune Vuorela
Package: libpisock-dev
Version: 0.12.1-5
Severity: grave

I have somehow misinterpreted 393792 so I file my comments as a
separate bug.

It seems tha libpisock has changed, so tha programs build-depending on
libpisock-dev needs major adoptions to work with libpisock9

It looks like the case that
1) packages builds against new api without source changes
2) packages does not work with new api without source changes

A author of another program using libpisock writes in 393792 writes:

Yes, pilot-addresses is limited in it's current form but the original
bug in kpilot is far more likely to be caused by kpilot not making
sufficient upstream changes to migrate to the libpisock9 API.

libpisock8 was part of pilot-link 0.11 and pilot-link 0.12 took three
years to be released - there are significant changes, hence the API
change from 8 to 9.

This is very strongly related to 394534

Surely this is a bug in passwd (providing the chfn command) or in the test

Ah, no; passwd is unpacked but not configured, which means /etc/pam.d/chfn
is still at /etc/pam.d/chfn.dpkg-new. So this is all just a normal symptom
of the root bug, calling adduser in the preinst without a pre-dependency.

Bug#383949: anjuta: can not add a new source file in a wizard project (patch proposal)

2006-11-14 Thread Yannick Gicquel

Hi Rob,

Currently I made some little corrections because of the big
instability I observed myself on this version software. With theses
little patchs I think the software would be stable enought to ensure a
minimum usage by users and also a big thing from my point of view : to
permit the installation if you are today using anything else that
unstable debian distribution.

I have concentrate this work on this baseline because I also remark
that Anjuta 2 more unstable under my distribution today (debian
testing). (FYI: it make X crash on my side)

Your remark is interesting, I was also thinking to bring some help to
Anjuta's developpers. I will contact them soon.

Concerning the 383949 bug, I know this is more that a simple patch but
a real new developpment. You can integrate it or not, no problem with
that. Maybe upstream developpers can validate this...

Yannick

Yannick,

Anjuta 1.2.* is no longer actively maintained by upstream. Instead they
are working on Anjuta 2. Perhaps you might like to join in the work? See

And although I will of course apply the bug-fixes that you sent me i'd
hate to deviate too much from the upstream version.

Bug#398464: root on ext3 over lvm over dm-crypt over raid 1 fails to boot

2006-11-14 Thread David Härdeman

On Tuesday 14 November 2006 09:48, you wrote:
The problem is a disagreement between partman-md and
partman-crypto which results in a bogus /etc/fstab on the target fs and
after that everything goes downhill (see #393728 for more details).

Is there a way to fix the installation?
/etc/fstab ?
/etc/crypttab ?

Both are potentionally wrong. You'd need to get the (unencrypted) fs
setup, chroot into it, fix those two files and regenerate the initramfs
image. This can either be done from the limited rescue shell included in
the initramfs image (boot with the break command line option) or with
debian-installer (boot it with the rescue option).

In the intramfs/d-i rescue shell you'll need to manually setup the target
fs (probably with manual invocations of mdadm and cryptsetup), chroot into
it (chroot /target), do the fixes and then run initramfs-update -u and
reboot. Whether you'll be able to sort it out mostly depends on your
skills :)

Another alternative is to redo the install and just before the last
(reboot) step, change to VT2 (alt + F2), your installed system should
still be available under /target which will allow you to apply the
necessary fixes (unfortunately I can't tell you exactly what needs to be
changed cause I don't know what the contents of those two files will be
after the installation).

I'm sorry if these instructions are a bit vague, but it's hard to provide
better ones with the information I have at hand.

Hopefully I'll have time to look into this soon or we'll have to mention
that crypto and md are not compatible in the debian-installer errata.

This would be great. Tell me, if I can help. E.g. Testing it.

I'll let you know when some progress has been made. Please keep
CC:ed on any further mails you send regarding this
problem so that others are also kept up-to-date.

Bug#284786: checkinstall: fixed upstream in 1.6.1

2006-11-14 Thread Paul Donohue
Package: checkinstall
Version: 1.5.3-3
Followup-For: Bug #284786

This bug is fixed upstream in 1.6.1:
nov/01/2006

* Provides/Requires bug fixed

* Applied the patches from Felipe Sateler:

 - We now explicitly run bash (It has always benn a requiremente anyway)
 - In Debian we set the architecture with dpkg-architecture.
 - If we're creating a .dpkg then we eliminate uderscores and put
dashes instead in the package name.
 - Tag all files in /etc inside the package as config files

When building 'extipl' on amd64/unstable, I get the following error:

extipl has never built on amd64 before, so this is not serious, only
important. Downgrading.

Apart from that, your patch looks sane, except that one would want to build
with CPPFLAGS=$( getconf LFS_CFLAGS ) to get LFS support.

Bug#337779: release-notes do not suggest re-running lilo

2006-11-14 Thread Andreas Barth
severity 337779 serious
reassign 337779 lilo,release-notes

Hi,

* Simon Tatham () [051106 05:56]:
Since we hadn't upgraded the kernel (as the release notes told us
not to), it hadn't occurred to me that we might need to re-run lilo.
However, we did, and presumably (with hindsight) the reason was that
the LILO second stage had changed due to the upgrade of the lilo
package itself. At no point did lilo automatically re-run (probably
a good thing - I might have had the package installed but not
currently have been using it as my bootloader) or offer to re-run
(which perhaps it should have).

It looks like lilo is only re-run in certain cases. Can someone from
the lilo-side please comment on this?

Cheers,
Andi

Bug#357125: occurs on 2.0.4-2, too

2006-11-14 Thread Uwe Zeisberger
Hello,

I see exactly that behaviour using openoffice 2.0.4-2.

Sorry for reporting against an old version, but I have currently very
limited internet access. I just downloaded 2.0.4-5 and 2.0.4-7 (i.e.
versions currently in sarge and sid) to check if it occurs there, too.

The changelog doesn't mention a second fixing, so I report it already
know.

Best regards
Uwe

This bug is not due to ruby extension but the way for kazehakase to
create thumbnails. To create a thumbnail of a web page, kazehakase
outputs a postscript file using printing function of libxul, and then
converts it to a png image with ghostscript. So libxul is primarily
responsible for this bug(For example, epiphany browser, which uses
libxul like kazehakase, crashes when we try to print the page

The easiest way to avoid crash of kazehakase is disable Create
