Bug#398527: autoconf: please move .m4f files into /var/...
Package: autoconf Version: 2.60a-4 Severity: wishlist *.m4f files are automatically generated from Autoconf's .m4 files. For instance, /usr/share/autoconf/autoconf/autoconf.m4f is (re-)generated by executing: (cd /usr/share/autoconf/autoconf/ ; autom4te --language=autoconf --freeze --output=autoconf.m4f) Therefore, this file is a good candidate to be placed into e.g. /var/lib/autoconf/autoconf/, as for the FHS. And a soft link should be made: ln -s /var/lib/autoconf/autoconf/autoconf.m4f /usr/share/autoconf/autoconf/autoconf.m4f Idem for .../autotest/autotest.m4f, .../m4sugar/m4sh.m4f, and /m4sugar/m4sugar.m4f. The motivation is to let Debian packages add m4 files directly into Autoconf's directories, and rebuild the autotest.m4f file at postinst. Adding M4 macros directly into Autoconf is mandatory when some macros make aclocal crash. For instance, language-support macros must have parenthesis in their names, which makes aclocal choke. For instance, see macro AC_LANG_PROGRAM(C) in c.m4, or AC_LANG_PROGRAM(Erlang) in erlang.m4. Such macros *must* be added directly into Autoconf, since they cannot be parsed by aclocal due to bugs in aclocal. In addition, I suggest to make addition+inclusion of M4 files easier, by adding the following line at the end of /usr/share/autoconf/autoconf/autoconf.m4: m4_include([/var/lib/autoconf/autoconf/autoconf-includes.m4]) And to let packages addremove m4_include([...]) lines for the files they install, in that new /var/lib/autoconf/autoconf/autoconf-includes.m4 file. New files installed by packages should be installed in /usr/share/autoconf/autoconf/, so those m4_include lines should have the form: m4_include([/usr/share/autoconf/autoconf/m4]) And idem for all /var/lib/autoconf/*/ directories. This proposal would let packages install Autoconf support for new test languages, without having to be directly included in the autoconf package, and without having to modify the .m4f files in /usr/ at postinst. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (990, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-1-686 Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=ja_JP.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages autoconf depends on: ii debianutils 2.17.3 Miscellaneous utilities specific t ii m41.4.7-1a macro processing language ii perl 5.8.8-6.1 Larry Wall's Practical Extraction Versions of packages autoconf recommends: ii automake1.9 [automaken] 1.9.6+nogfdl-2 A tool for generating GNU Standard -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#340007: Patch for this bug available

The patch looks good, but has one rough edge: you see the frontend jump to the default choice. It looks like the list is first displayed with the top of the list displayed, and only then it jumps to the default and the display is refreshed. Would it be possible to not do the first display so that the correct part of the list is displayed immediately and the jump effect is avoided? This is a minor improvement though. If fixing this is not possible or too invasive I'm happy to go with the current patch for etch. ATM i don't see any definitive solution to this , but i have a small workaround: what about selecting default line and then scrolling instead of scrolling and then select default line (as it is now)? User would perceive only scrolling effect, instead of scrolling + line selection. cheers Attilio -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#395889: udev cannot be set up in a chrooted environment on 2.6.18
Hello, ... Well, i gave this bug a bit of a test. on a 2.6.18 powerpc/pegasos system, which is mostly etch with sid kernels, i tested both proposed fixes : if ! [ -r /proc/1/root -a /proc/1/root/ -ef /proc/self/root/ ] returned FALSE in both cases (Well, i think i forgot the !, so it probably did return TRUE in both cases). So, this solution is not working. On the other hand this check : [ $(stat -c %d/%i /) = $(stat -Lc %d/%i /proc/1/root) ] works fine (returning TRUE on the real system and FALSE in the chroot). Given the critic Christoph had (warnings on pre-2.6.18, altough we hardly care for this in etch, which will have 2.6.18), mayeb something like this : if [ `uname -r` -ge 2.6.18 ] [ $(stat -c %d/%i /) = $(stat -Lc %d/%i /proc/1/root) ]; then # WE ARE IN THE REAL SYSTEM else # WE ARE IN THE CHROOT fi Should be best. Well, this will not work, since uname -r will return something like 2.6.18-2-powerpc which is not test friendly, but you get the idea. Finding the right comparison is left as an exercice for the one which is going to fix this bug. Let's fix this ASAP, so we can get a fixed version uploaded to unstable, and do some widespread tests, and then move the fixed udev and 2.6.18 kernels into testing. Also, fontforge does not crash on my system when opening the font. It just uses a lot of memory ( 512 MB RAM recommended to open the font). Moreover, this font has been created with fontforge. This is why I cannot rely on GNU make and need a working and highly portable make program. Bug#398466: hostapd 0.5.5-3 serious regression with madwifi
On Tuesday 14 November 2006 08:43, Kel Modderman wrote: Package: hostapd Version: 1:0.5.5-3 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable The subtle changes between 0.5.5-2 and 0.5.5-3 have exposed a showstopping bug when used in conjunction with certain madwifi driver versions (specifically 0.9.2+r1784.20061027-1 currently in debian). This should not pass into testing, where 0.5.5-2 is working perfectly. Further information will follow. It is exactly this problem: http://lists.shmoo.com/pipermail/hostap/2006-October/014354.html I propose that we revert recent backport of fixes/enhancements to the driver_madwifi code, so that we can at leas take advantage of the partial hostapd support (everything != plaintext) that has proven to be working well in the released version 0.5.5. Bug#370295: sun-java must not provide java2-runtime
severity 370295 important thanks The rationale given for reopening this bug was: The SWT example suggests that it is OK to reimplement large parts of the Java API and configure Sun's Java to run with it, but the plain language of the license prohibits it. Even though the license text appears to prohibit this, and even though the license text asserts that the FAQ is non-binding, we have: - a statement from upstream (in the FAQ) that the DLJ does not prohibit distributing sun-java5 together with eclipse, which implies it does not prohibit distributing it together with SWT - an upstream liaison who understands Debian packaging and how these packages are put together and who, after reviewing this bug report, closed it with the statement that these issues have been addressed. It is also debatable whether Debian has combined, configured, or distributed the Software to run in conjunction with any additional software that implements the same or similar functionality or APIs as the Software. We are distributing the software in such a way that a user can opt to combine them, but even though sun-java5 is listed as providing java2-runtime, on a default Debian system non-free is not even listed in the apt configuration. I'm not going to claim that there are no bugs in the way this package is currently licensed; lack of clarity is always a bug. But I don't believe there is anything here that warrants holding the package out of the release -- and upstream apparently agrees. -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world. Bug#383949: anjuta: can not add a new source file in a wizard project (patch proposal)
Hi Rob, Currently I made some little corrections because of the big instability I observed myself on this version software. With theses little patchs I think the software would be stable enought to ensure a minimum usage by users and also a big thing from my point of view : to permit the installation if you are today using anything else that unstable debian distribution. I have concentrate this work on this baseline because I also remark that Anjuta 2 more unstable under my distribution today (debian testing). (FYI: it make X crash on my side) Your remark is interesting, I was also thinking to bring some help to Anjuta's developpers. I will contact them soon. Concerning the 383949 bug, I know this is more that a simple patch but a real new developpment. You can integrate it or not, no problem with that. Maybe upstream developpers can validate this... Bug#398464: root on ext3 over lvm over dm-crypt over raid 1 fails to boot
On Tue, November 14, 2006 14:01, Mario Schubert said: On Tuesday 14 November 2006 09:48, you wrote: The problem is a disagreement between partman-md and partman-crypto which results in a bogus /etc/fstab on the target fs and after that everything goes downhill (see #393728 for more details). Is there a way to fix the installation? /etc/fstab ? /etc/crypttab ? Both are potentionally wrong. You'd need to get the (unencrypted) fs setup, chroot into it, fix those two files and regenerate the initramfs image. This can either be done from the limited rescue shell included in the initramfs image (boot with the break command line option) or with debian-installer (boot it with the rescue option). In the intramfs/d-i rescue shell you'll need to manually setup the target fs (probably with manual invocations of mdadm and cryptsetup), chroot into it (chroot /target), do the fixes and then run initramfs-update -u and reboot. Whether you'll be able to sort it out mostly depends on your skills :) Another alternative is to redo the install and just before the last (reboot) step, change to VT2 (alt + F2), your installed system should still be available under /target which will allow you to apply the necessary fixes (unfortunately I can't tell you exactly what needs to be changed cause I don't know what the contents of those two files will be after the installation). I'm sorry if these instructions are a bit vague, but it's hard to provide better ones with the information I have at hand. Hopefully I'll have time to look into this soon or we'll have to mention that crypto and md are not compatible in the debian-installer errata. This would be great. Tell me, if I can help. E.g. Testing it. I'll let you know when some progress has been made. severity 337779 serious reassign 337779 lilo,release-notes thanks Hi, * Simon Tatham () [051106 05:56]: Since we hadn't upgraded the kernel (as the release notes told us not to), it hadn't occurred to me that we might need to re-run lilo. However, we did, and presumably (with hindsight) the reason was that the LILO second stage had changed due to the upgrade of the lilo package itself. At no point did lilo automatically re-run (probably a good thing - I might have had the package installed but not currently have been using it as my bootloader) or offer to re-run (which perhaps it should have). It looks like lilo is only re-run in certain cases. Can someone from the lilo-side please comment on this?
