Bug#402545: compiz: Returning from another virtual terminal makes a black screen
Package: compiz Version: 0.2.2-1 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable I log into my Gnome session on virtual terminal 8 (Ctrl+Alt+8). It starts metacity by default. I start compiz manually (compiz --replace). I regularly need to switch back to the text consoles (vt1 = Ctrl+Alt+1) or to another X session (vt7). When I come back to the X session where compiz was started (vt8), I get a full black screen, except for my pointer which I can still see moving (and changing its shape depending on which area of the screen it is). There is no way for me to leave this black screen (no Ctrl+Alt combination works). I use the latest NVIDIA proprietary driver (1.0-9631). I followed the Debian howto for configuring my Xorg.conf (http://wiki.debian.org/Compiz). How can I get rid of this black screen? Bug#401903: Integrating texdoc.php into Debian's teTeX
Dear Joao, I have a question regarding the integration of texdoc.php in the somewhat special setup of teTeX for Debian, and hope you will be able to help me. The difference to a normal teTeX is that the meaning of TEXMFMAIN is changed. TEXMFDIST contains what it also contains in teTeX, but it's called /usr/share/texmf-tetex, whereas TEXMFMAIN (/usr/share/texmf/) does not only contain things like pool files in web2c/, but also lots of input and documentation files from other Debian packages that are not part of teTeX (either not packaged upstream, or separate only in Debian). I found I had to change config.php to make it work: , | $texmftrees['fs'] = array( '' = '../../../texmf-tetex/', | 'main' = '../../../texmf', | 'local' = '../../../../local/share/texmf/'); | $texmftrees['url'] = array( '' = '../../../texmf-tetex/', | 'main' = '../../../texmf/', | 'local' = '../../../../local/share/texmf/' ); | ### Support for variable names in the *.dat files. | ### One might argue that several names may be admissible | ### in each of one or more trees; then values should be arrays | ### and code will need to be changed with one more loop. | $texmftrees['datname'] = array( 'local' = 'texdoctk-local.dat', | '' = 'texdoctk.dat', | 'main' = 'texdoctk.dat' ); ` I don't understand why I needed to rename 'dist' to '' and '' to main, but without it it didn't build the menu. Now the problem is that files in /usr/share/texmf/doc are not found. The link points to their supposed location in /usr/share/texmf-tetex/doc and is shown in red. This obviously means that checklinks doesn't return anything, but I wonder why it doesn't find the files: checklinks is supposed to iterate over all trees. Can you point me to the error, or show me how I can debug this (I have no experience with php at all, sorry)? (If you happen to have a Debian system available, packages from etch, sid, or backports.org for sarge all show this behavior, although I've made some further unreleased changes in our repository. You need tetex-doc, some apache and libapache2-mod-php[45] installed, plus tetex-doc-nonfree to actually have one of the red documents present, the ConTeXt documentation.) Bug#402549: why not totem-gstreamer and totem-xine installed at the same time?
package: totem severity: wishlist Hello! I wonder why it is not possible to have both 'totem-xine' and 'totem-gstreamer' packages installed at the same time. The executables in /usr/bin could be renamed to the packages names and linking with /usr/bin/totem could be handled via Debian's alternatives system. All files which are common in both packages could be moved into a 'totem-common' package on which both frontends depend. Sometimes if a movies fails to play on the one backend it perfectly runs on the other one. In the current situation you have to remove the one package in order to install the other one even if you only want to test a video file with both engines. Is it possible in one of the next revisions or have I missed anything? Thank you! Cheers, Fabian -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#402456: Serious Copyright violation in cdrkit
#include hallo.h *Joerg Schilling [Sun, Dec 10 2006, 10:38:15PM]: First, sccsids are unused code. They have been removed for technical reasons, and because no usual user and no regular program seem to use them (see below). And they are disturbing the QA work by triggering compiler warnings. But what should I teach you? You know that perfectly well, the '#ifndef lint' cludge indicates a workaround for that problem already. They can be readded easily (but then with a special flag to tell GCC to be quiet about unused code). Whether we should do that is not my decission. Stop abusing the Debian Bug tracking system! There is a serious Copyright violation in the current SVN for cdrkit caused by the fact that Copyright notices have been removed without permission from the Authors. So you accuse us of breaking the law while we have not done it [1]. Even IF someone could follow your special logics and think that not adding stuff to unused machine code is some violation... uhm, we are not distributing object code yet, are you blind? Why do you open invalid bug reports in the Debian BTS? Maybe to give them more Google hits and get more publicity for your propaganda? The notices in question that have been removed make sure that the binaries compiled from the sources still carry the Copyright notices. The GPL tells to add copyright notices to the source, and the law (UrhG) tells to add copyright holder information on visible places. Source headers and documentation are such places. Binary code internals are not such places. Why not? Because they are not visible for normal people. Sccsids are aliens in the GNU world. Nobody looks for them in the binary code. Uhm... compare it to use the invisible tint in the books in the real world. There is no regular system tool to extract them. AFAICS there is only one free clone of this proprietary SCCS system that one has to explicitely install (and it is not called sccs anyway). Hardly anyone would use it to retrieve copyright information. Uhm... so the magic light needed to see your invisible tint is available in the hands of few secret service people, and few hobbyists that created a clone of that light without permission. And compilers could legally throw such stuff away so this method of information distribution is not really reliable. But program documentation and source code headers are, and that is what GPL talks about. And what we care about. There is no additional choice of compiler restriction in the GPL. If want to make the choice of compiler and compiler flags to be a part of your license, then the license is non-free. Do you want to say it is non-free? But why should I teach you? You and your fellows distribute SchilliX. I looked at it and the first non-standard binary coming to my mind (wget) had no sccsid strings inside. How comes? You are violating a license even by your standards? And there are more of that kind. And on regular GNU systems ONLY FEW binaries in /usr/bin/* provide such information. And the most verbose/penetrant ones are those from you or where your code is involved (cdrdao). Are you going to say that every distributor is violating the license of 99.9% (guessed number) of copyright holders around? Or let's look at your cdrtools source. Many mkisofs' files have scssid but there is no indication about all copyright holders. Even on those not written by you. So you are violating Eric's license in write.c? And in udf.c you added yourself and only yourself to the sccsid string but the the headers primarily says 'Written by Ben Rudiak-Gould (2001)'. If the sccssid mean as much as you claim, does your sccsid string mean that you hide Ben's copyright? Sorry Joerg, your own actions are so self-contradictory that nobody can take your claims seriously. Eduard. [1] Einst hast du mich auf die gleiche Weise der üblen Nachrede beschuldigt. Bug#353332: fixed bugs in new package
I have completely reworked the packaging for the netcdf libraries into a modern cdbs based package. It also fixes the bugs that are receiving this report. I have the packages posted at [1]. Please look at them. I see there is an ITA that has had no activity since August. Any activity didn't look like it resulted in actual package uploads. In fact, the QA team currently maintains the package. I am interested in Adopting the package if anyone is interested in sponsoring. I have also sent this report to the ITA bug for this package. Bug#401916: initramfs-tools: [powerpc64] i-t tries to mount RAID/LVM stuff before the disk are up - unbootable
On Sun, Dec 10, 2006 at 10:39:45AM +0100, maximilian attems wrote: On Wed, 06 Dec 2006, Sven Luther wrote: Package: initramfs-tools Severity: critical Justification: breaks the whole system hmm yes i know of that situation it affects a certain range of roots. Today i went to the datacenter to reboot the xserve G5 i have there, for some random reason, and what was not my surprise to notice that the box didn't come up anymore. After some dmesg examination, i noticed that the sata disks did come up only after i-t tried to bring up the RAID and LVM stuff, which is really not nice. the trouble is that udevsellte exists to early that mean when the scsi/usb discs are not up yet. hitting raid/lvm2 roots on those devices and more general lilo boots as there you have no root dev to wait for. i notified udev upstream for it, but got no response i'll reask privately. http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linux-scsim=116189244404693w=2 Yeah, please do, we really need to fix this before etch is out, i don't think that having a server who cannot reboot sometimes is something we want to ship in etch. Furthermore, playing offline without any info with the box, i was not able to convince i-t to mount the partition and investigate, but well, i guess i would have been able to do so if i had the code available, or more time to investigate. you should have rerun the early initramfs-tools stages, see init. than it works. Ah, that was the missing info. I searched a bit, but didn't find easily what to do, and then i had to leave. I will be at the box on thursday again. Now, as a temporary workaround, maybe one solution, if RAID/LVM was not found is to delay for a given time (1/2 minute ? a configurable time ?), and then try again. Another nice thing would be able to rerun the early initramfs-tools stages, or maybe even have a stamp of each completed stage, and a single command which allow to restart the detection from there ? Bug#402432: touching other packages conffiles
On Mon, Dec 11, 2006 at 02:00:06PM +0800, Thomas Goirand wrote: Steffen Joeris wrote: Your package edits conffiles with the maintainer scripts, which do not belong to your own package. This is a policy violation and results in an RC bug, sorry. Let me give you an example: You edit a lot in the php.ini , for instance adding some extensions. The php debian package under Sarge had a nasty bug so mysql.so was not inserted in the php.ini. If it's not in SID anymore, I'll skip that part of the installer. But I know that also, the max memory for the apache module and the max time of execution for the phpX-cli binary have to be changed. Leaving it as-is would produce tons of requests in my public forum. So I will: - remove from sid the modifications for the .so in php if I see the php packages really set the extension when installing. - leave the modifications for max mem and max time. Would it be better like that ? No. php.ini is still not yours to edit without prior coordination with the php package maintainers. As far as I know (but I am not that familiar with php stuff, so others are welcome to add more information) you can add a file and place it into the /etc/php[4|5]/conf.d/ directory. The added extensions are honoured by php and you have a lot of advantages. For instance when you purge your package the file will just be removed and therefore the extension will be removed as well. This is safe debian behavior, because with home-made shell scripting you can run into heaps of problems really fast, because you do not know what to expect from the php.ini and therefore your shell scripts might fail. However it is allowed to ship a configuration script which is NOT run by the maintainer script, but can be manually run by the user. I personally prefer to have a good documentation in the README.Debian file, so that the user can always check what needs to be done for configuration purpose. Please note that this is the example for the php.ini file, however there are other modifications, for instance the /etc/res I don't think this is the case.olv.conf file, please remove all of them from the postinst and make them policy compliant. Modifying the resolve.conf is really needed, because all of the daemons will run faster is using a caching name server. I don't think it's a good idea not to query the installed bind server. That doesn't matter, you have no business imposing your preferences on users by editing this config file in a Debian package, either. Thanks in advance and have a nice sunday Each of the modifications done by the control panel installer are really needed. Please point to each of them and tell me what is wrong. More generaly speaking the goal of that kind of software IS to manage the daemon configurations, that is the ONLY goal of that kind of programs, and that is NOT forbidden, as far as I could read. If you look at the installer, it tries to modify the less possible in all the configuration files. It's not overwriting anything, just doing the modifications that are needed, and we tried the most we could to reverse the changes when removing the panel. That being said, I'm always happy to correct things so it integrates better. Changing config files from a web control panel is allowed. Changing them from within a package's *maintainer scripts* is not, and that's what this bug was filed about. -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world. Bug#402539: debcommit: Document use of git-diff --cached, and offer option for alternative
On Sun, Dec 10, 2006 at 06:43:41PM -0800, Jamey Sharp wrote: Package: devscripts Version: 2.9.26 Severity: normal File: /usr/bin/debcommit When using Git to obtain the changes to debian/changelog for the commit message, debcommit runs `git-diff --cached`. This only shows changes recorded in Git's index with git-update-index, as opposed to all changes in the working directory. The manual page for debcommit should document this behavior. In addition to improved documentation, it would be nice if debcommit offered an equivalent for `git-commit -a`, which (roughly) ignores the index and commits the contents of the working directory. Implementing such an option is simple: use `git-diff HEAD` rather than --cached, and pass '-a' along with the other arguments to git-commit. I don't use git myself, so have no way to test this. If you supply a patch to the current debcommit, I will apply it. Thanks! Julian -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bug#402499: initramfs-tools: depmod wastes space and time, please replace it with a modules.dep file
On Mon, 11 Dec 2006, Russell Coker wrote: On Monday 11 December 2006 08:23, maximilian attems [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: nice idea, but in initramfs the depmod call is blazingly fast! this can be easily timed in a qemu image. so nacked. The execution time is a minor issue. it was brought forward multiple times and showed to be false. The major issue is that the depmod program is simply larger than a full modules.dep file when compressed. Given that most sane configurations will not have the complete set of kernel modules (I use modules=list for a very small set of modules) the modules.dep file will often be smaller than depmod when uncompressed. Using the modules.dep file saves initramfs size in every case, and saves memory in some common cases. first of all MODULES=most is the default, so that is the common case! the case you brought up had a small 1k difference, so that's not the place to optimize. i really don't see your antipathy on BUSYBOX=n there you can get rid of glibc which is taking a _huge_ place on initramfs. I use lvm root over a software RAID-1 on all my important machines (apart from laptops which use LVM-root but no RAID). Therefore glibc is required in the initramfs for both LVM and RAID. If I'm going to have glibc there anyway then I might as well take advantages of the benefits that busybox offers! If there were klibc versions of mdadm and vgchange then things would be different. hmm ok, i thought you were squeezing for some embedded board. there i would consider also aboves possibility othere than that i don't see an improvement. Given that the quality of support for root on LVM and RAID has increased significantly for etch (was it even in the installer before etch?) and that cryptsetup (which is dynamically linked) is now supported for root it seems likely that a very large portion of etch users will have glibc in their initramfs, in fact a majority of users might have it. sure by default any etch user will have glibc on initramfs due to busysbox, udev and module-init-tools. -- maks -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#402516: stegdetect: forked magic seems like the wrong design decision

Bug#402499: initramfs-tools: depmod wastes space and time, please replace it with a modules.dep file
On Monday 11 December 2006 20:57, maximilian attems [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The major issue is that the depmod program is simply larger than a full modules.dep file when compressed. MODULES=most will give a smaller modules.dep than the one that lives under /lib/modules. The modules.dep that comes from /lib/modules will take up less space when compressed than depmod, so the MODULES=most case will save even more space. i really don't see your antipathy on BUSYBOX=n there you can get rid of glibc which is taking a _huge_ place on initramfs. I use lvm root over a software RAID-1 on all my important machines (apart hmm ok, i thought you were squeezing for some embedded board. Just generally squeezing because I don't like wasting space. sure by default any etch user will have glibc on initramfs due to busysbox, udev and module-init-tools. OK, as the default requires glibc therefore doing everything in busybox will save space. Long-term we should consider getting modprobe and other programs included in busybox (modprobe used to be there for 2.4.x, we can do it again). -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#295731: ssh fails to bind link-scope IPv6 addresses
Le dimanche 10 décembre 2006 23:15, vous avez écrit : Where did you get that syntax from? This is a fairly common getaddrinfo() hostname extension, present in at least GNU libc and BSD libc. Why do I have to specify the interface if only one such link-local address exists on the system? Because the IPv6 stack cannot know which interface to use for link-scoped address, since it could be about any interface (except lo and some fancy tunnels). Or is it just a dumb linux kernel? It is made so *on-purpose*. That is not at all Linux-specific. If it exists on more than one interface, why can't it then bind to all interfaces that this address is valid on? I am not writing the IPv6 standards. I bet it's meant for consistency with the requirements for connect()/sendto(), and to avoid issues when using software bridges or similar constructs that may trigger multiple interface with identical MAC address and hence link-local IPv6 address. And again: where is this documented? Partly in RFC 3542. Otherwise in glibc source code. -- Rémi Denis-Courmont pgpUn0ecZcfCI.pgp Description: PGP signature

Bug#380226: NTFS alignement problem ...
Hi, ... On Xavier Oswald's proding, i had a look at the history of this bug. I don't really know much about NTFS and other windowy filesystems, so i cannot really give much info, which is why i didn't help investigate these bugs. Now, one of the recomendation was to change the alignement issues, and there was a note of the current way of things being so for pre-LBA compatibility issues, which brang into memory the whole huge set of problems which where present 1-2 years ago with windowy filesystem resizing. As such, i strongly urge you (Maybe otavio or xavier are the best candidates for that), to take contact with upstream, and not to try to solve the issue alone in debian, and possibly do something which may break the other compatibility issue affecting older hardware, which we may or not be able to detect before the etch release. Bug#402402: lightspeed: crushes on start
Hi The reason that I reassigned it to that package is that I can not see how lightspeed can distroy the internal data structure in fontconfig so that it on finalize of the structure makes an assert. The lightspeed application do not even call this function. I think it is valid to forward this bug. But maybe I did not give enough proof on that the problem is in fontconfig. Bug#289267: [debian-ntp] Bug#289267: ntp: NTP on ifup
* Ingo Oeser The proposed solution of using /etc/networking/if-up.d/ works without any problem for most of your users. Actually unbuntu Dapper Drake is just doing it this way and I never had any problems. We fixed it for our customers the same way. This is scary. I just had a rather unpleasant experience with this behaviour on a router box here. Time was a little bit out of sync, upped an interface, and then the time was stepped, something that made OSPF die in horror as it can't quite cope with the situation where time goes backwards (no wonder). So the if-up.d call need to use the -B option orelse it's not safe to have this package installed on production systems. -- Tore Anderson -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#402574: PATH, start-stop-daemon and dhcp3-server init script
Package: dhcp3-server Version: 3.0.1-2 I think there's a little bug in dhcp3-server init script, cron default PATH is very limited (only /usr/bin and /bin are included) and there are some references to start-stop-daemon script which is located at /sbin/start-stop-daemon. Bug#402493: Need workaround
tags 402493 +confirmed thanks Vagrant: after using s2disk, and failing to resume from the swap partition, the swap signature on the swap partition needs to be re-created with mkswap. while swap partitions don't typically store important data, it's kind of annoying to hae to manually re-run mkswap. Yes, this is more or less expected behaviour. If you don't resume from the swap partition, the image is still on there, hence no swap signature. The solution to work around this is that on a normal boot up (when the image becomes useless anyway) we need to mkswap. There used to be a patch in mount that did this for suspend/suspend2, I forgot what happened to it. grts Tim -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#402575: aptitude: add help button for easy access to regular expressions
Package: aptitude Version: 0.4.4-1 Severity: wishlist This is request for etch+1 :-) l or / brings out dialogues to input aptitude regular expression. Honestly, people need help button here instead of having its documentation embedded deep in the manual which is available only from the main help pull-down menu. Also regular expression are best sorted by its types and functions rather than its alphabetical order. People read this document trying to find right regular expressions for what they want to do rather than deciphering someone else's regular expressions. The order of documentation in the current manual is only good as the design specification of aptitude only. In light of this, I suggest something along following document is available from l or / dialogues. Can you add [Help] button to them which displays regular expression quick help as follows with scrollable screen as manual for etch+1? Bug#401528: Nearly solved
Hi, I discovered where the problem was. I removed an old automatic configuration from my .emacs* files, and do not have this problem anymore. I feel that Emacs should do something about that mismatch. Package: emacs-goodies-el Version: 26.9-1 Severity: normal Tags: patch Hi! Bug#402578: xpdf-common: Parse ~ in include directives
Package: xpdf-common Version: 3.01-9 Severity: wishlist Hi! One feature I like and use in the xpdfrc configuration format is the presence of the `include' directives which enable dividing the configuration into a modular structure.
