Bug#470897: dict-foldoc: dictionary is installed empty

2008-03-14 Thread Pancho Horrillo
Package: dict-foldoc
Version: 20070526-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

The dictionary is installed empty, due to a small bug in the source
package.

Just
$ chmod +x debian/condense

and the package builds again nicely.

N.B.: I don't know if debian policy allows having other executable files
beside debian/rules. If not, then it is debian/rules where the fix
should go:

perl debian/condense

instead of just

debian/condense.

Hope that it helps.

Thanks for your dedication.

Friendly,

pancho.

Bug#391280: apache2-mpm-prefork: doesn't bind to IPv4 socket when IPv6 enabled

2008-03-14 Thread Michael Mende
From apache docs [1]:

On the other hand, on some platforms such as Linux and Tru64 the only
way to handle both IPv6 and IPv4 is to use mapped addresses.
Mapping is default on Linux (in contrary to FreeBSD, NetBSD, and
OpenBSD).

That's why you don't see two sockets.

Here comes the test:

xen2:~# grep ^Listen /etc/apache2/ports.conf

xen2:~# netstat -tulpen | grep apache

tried to switch back to the local sync, it made rhythmbox hang.

Bug#470844: [Pkg-samba-maint] Bug#470844: encoding issue with spaces in nmblookup(1) synopsis

2008-03-14 Thread Christian Perrier
Quoting Filipus Klutiero ([EMAIL PROTECTED]):
 Package: samba-common
 Version: 3.0.28-4
 Severity: minor

konqueror shows the SYNOPIS section of nmblookup's manpage like this:

 SYNOPSIS
 nmblookup [-M] [-R] [-S] [-r] [-A] [-h] [-Bbroadcastaddress]
 [-Uunicastaddress] [-ddebuglevel] [-ssmbconfigfile]
 [-iNetBIOSscope] [-T] [-f] {name}

 man like this:
 SYNOPSIS
nmblookup [-M] [-R] [-S] [-r] [-A] [-h] [-Bbroadcastaddress]
 [-Uunicastaddress] [-ddebuglevel] [-ssmbconfigfile] [-iNetBIOSscope]
 [-T] [-f] {name}

The characters look like simple spaces in stable.

Apparently, these are non-breakable spacesencoded in ISO-8859-1.
I'm not sure this can be called incorrect. Colin

I don't see any deep reasons for these spaces to be uncreakable,
though. I'd rather see them as regular spaces, which would help good
portability of original manpages.

Samba's manpages are generated from XML files in upstream's samba-doc
SVN. They are included in upstream's distribution when releases are
published.. The fix should probably go there rather than having a
Debian-cooked patch to the generated manpages

Still I would like to know the circumstances when this happens. Is this

Ok, the system is an Acer Aspire 3020 laptop, not a virtual machine. I
run ntp on the system so I guess it is possible this could have been
caused by the clock changing (though I don't recall whether I had
configured ntp at the time of sending this bug).

The laptop has had some odd hardware problems of late, they come and go.
They usually manifest themselves by the window manager grabbing the
keyboard, preventing me from switching to other programs. The first few
times I can usually escape from this by hitting ctrl+alt+/ but
eventually it doesn't work and I have to hard reset.

So maybe this bug is caused by the underlying hardware being flaky. :)

It would also be useful to know exactly it what module/plugin this happens
:) So I guess I need to improve the code to show that information as well.

Well, a division by zero should never happen, I just don't know how to
prevent this in a way that makes sense (and still provides reliable
numbers).

I could of course simply continue and erase any values when that happens.
But then people would not report me those cases :-)

So I guess I am waiting for someone who can reproduce it :-/

Bug#470902: texlive-latex-recommended: Hyperref produces unreadable pdftitle with option unicode under XeLaTeX

2008-03-14 Thread Gábor Braun
Package: texlive-latex-recommended
Version: 2007-13
Severity: normal

Processing the minimal input file below with xelatex,
the title in the PDF file seems to be corrupted: pdfinfo prints it correctly
until the y and garbage after it.

If I remove option 'unicode' of hyperref, and then process the file with
xelatex, the title is almost correct: the only problem is that the second
character 'ő' (present as '\H o' in the file) is replaced with 'o'.
(Hyperref gives a warning about it and this is expected behaviour.
But that the 'ű' comes out correct is unexpected.)

A workaround seems to be to use hyperref without 'unicode' and use
literal Unicode characters and not the equivalent LaTeX representations.

Best wishes,

Gábor Braun

Bug#470903: vlc: Heavy CPU usage when running in daemon mode with remote control interface

2008-03-14 Thread David
Package: vlc
Version: 0.8.6.c-6
Severity: normal

Running VLC on my system (with a bunch of low quality FLVs downloaded
from YouTube) usually uses less than 10% CPU (in 'top' listing). But
when I run VLC with in Daemon mode with Remote Control interface
enabled, the CPU usage is over 90%.

Here is my command-line:

/usr/bin/vlc -L -I rc --rc-fake-tty --rc-show-pos --no-video-deco \
  --video-x 0 --video-y 0 --width 1024 --height 768 -v3 \
  -d --file-logging --logfile /tmp/vlc.log \
  --volume 450 --aout alsa /home/david/NO_BACKUP/downloads/youtube/

If I remove either the daemon mode -d or the remote control
rc --rc-fake-tty --rc-show-pos options then the CPU usage
is low. It's only when both sets of options are used that the
CPU usage is hight.

I am running KDE 5:48 (4:3.5.5) under X.Org 1:7.2-5 on Debian
Testing. The problem also occurs with IceWM on Debian
Etch systems.

Bug#309953: dstat: easy way to reproduce

On Wed, 9 Jan 2008, Marc Lehmann wrote:

The reason for the interrupted system call as likely heavy swapping: when

An easy way to reproduce this is to press ctrl-s and wait 5-6 seconds,
then ctrl-q:

  # dstat

  print 'IOError: %s' % e
IOError: [Errno 4] Interrupted system call

Right, the problem is that I have to disable buffered writes to stdout
because I am updating the screen. And of course if it cannot directly
write to stdout (because the terminal is suspended) it interrupts the
syscall.

If somehow dstat could be triggered when that happens, we could enable
buffering again. But I doubt that is a very good solution. Maybe it would
make more sense to flush the buffer at regular intervals instead of making
the output unbuffered. But I am not sure whether that could cause the same
problem, at least we then can check for xoff the moment we want to flush.

How would any other program handle this ? How would a real programmer
handle it ? :-)

Still I would like to know the circumstances when this happens. Is this
possibly a virtual machine ? Have there been other issues, like
time-synchronisation problems or hardware related problems ?

Unfortunately I suspect this bug occurs once in a blue moon, and even
then, maybe even only on my crappy laptop...

I think it would be fine to just print 'erm something went wrong aiee'
as a data line (maybe to stderr as long as stdout is flushed first) and
then continuing as normal.

I am not sure if I get your problem. What is the point of

  not much sense?

I guess Riccardo suggests to change the hardcoded default browser
(which seems to be used if the browser config option is not set)
from lynx to sensible-browser; that would affect
src/configcontainer.cpp and src/view.cpp (and some files under doc/)

That makes more sense :) I will think about it.

Bug#470882: gpm freezes and makes other applications freeze/segfault

I have the situation right now again, here is the output from some

Hi,

I'd like to adopt the package. However I'd offer you to maintain the
package together with me. Currently I'm reliant on sponsors myself, but
the people I regulary work with are a good catch :-), so probably we
won't have the sponsor problem.

Interested?

Bug#470904: regression?

2008-03-14 Thread Max Alekseyev

I've just recalled that in 2006 I observed somewhat similar problem with
accessing menu in OpenOffice. But it was not that severe.
Please see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=395354 for details.
Maybe, they are related (that bug was about inappropriate signal handling,
afair).

Bug#470905: alien: cannot create deb from rpm

2008-03-14 Thread Denis Jacquerye
Package: alien

alien fails to produce deb files due to an error in the process.

For example:
$ fakeroot alien fontforge-20080309-1.i386.rpm
Warning: Skipping conversion of scripts in package fontforge: postinst postrm
Warning: Use the --scripts parameter to include the scripts.
mkdir: cannot create directory `fontforge-20080309/usr': File exists
unable to mkdir fontforge-20080309/usr: at
/usr/share/perl5/Alien/Package/Rpm.pm line 198.

Previous versions (up to 8.65) had just a warning:
mkdir: cannot create directory `fontforge-20070607/usr': File exists
mv: cannot move `fontforge-20070607/usr' to a subdirectory of itself,
`fontforge-20070607//usr/local/usr'

This happens on Ubuntu 7.10 or 8.04, see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alien/+bug/120057 as they
get the package directly from Debian.

Bug#469283: resizing - not that usable

2008-03-14 Thread Eddy Petrișor

Hello,

As shown in http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=469283#12, indeed, the box resizes,
depending on the number of lines, BUT until a max of 4 lines.

This is definitely a usability downgrade for those cases when you need to send multiple lines of
text and you'd prefer to review the entire message. Also, the fact that you can explicitly resize
the input box goes against what a regular person would expect.

Bug#470907: gnome-terminal: License text in About dialog is wrong

2008-03-14 Thread Robert Lemmen
Package: gnome-terminal
Version: 2.14.2-1
Severity: minor

hi everyone,

the last paragraph of the license text in the about box of
gnome-terminal reads:

You should have received a copy of the GNU General Public License
along with Nautilus; if not, write to the Free Software Foundation,
Inc., 51 Franklin St, Fifth Floor, Boston, MA 02110-1301 USA

please note the Nautilus in there. I guess the license text has been
copied from nautilus and not changed completely. since i expect most
people to do this when starting a new application (that's how i stumbled
over the bug myself), i suggest looking at some other license texts
within gnome as well

regards robert

Bug#470906: msgid-search does not work for Message-IDs still enclosed in brackets

2008-03-14 Thread Thijs Kinkhorst
Package: lists.debian.org
Severity: minor

Hi,

When I enter a message ID into the msgid-search search box which still has its
embracing brackets, I get no results for this ID. Removing the brackets
helps.

An example:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
yields no results
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
gives the expected message.

Although one could formally argue that the Message-ID is the part within the
brackets, I believe it would be trivial to strip the brackets that always
surround Message-IDs off for convenience.

thanks,
Thijs

I'm not sure this can be called incorrect. Colin

I don't see any deep reasons for these spaces to be uncreakable,
though. I'd rather see them as regular spaces, which would help good
 portability of original manpages.

The correct groff spelling of non-breaking spaces is '\ ' rather than an
ISO-8859-1 character. That said, note what 'info groff' says:

 (2) The last solution, i.e., using escaped spaces, is classical in
the sense that it can be found in most `troff' documents.
Nevertheless, it is not optimal in all situations, since `\ ' inserts a
  fixed-width, non-breaking space character which can't stretch.
`gtroff' provides a different command `\~' to insert a stretchable,
  non-breaking space.

Samba might not want to use the latter since it would be specific to
groff.

Aside from all of this, as soon as I get a chance to do so I would like
to investigate why Konqueror is misrendering this. In the most recent
version it's supposed to handle encodings correctly, but even in the
version Filipus is using it should have expected and correctly handled
ISO-8859-1.

warning about a missing upstream changelog which is quite helpful in
various situations (new changelog, missed in previous build, ...).

I wanted to suggest to add this functionality to lintian, just to
find out that it's already in checks/changelog-file{,.desc} but it's
commented out in the test:

# This tag is disabled for now since a lot of packages fail this
# aspect of policy and I want to clarify policy WRT multi-binary
# packages first.
#tag no-upstream-changelog, ;

My suggestion would be to enable the check but set the Type to info
in changelog-file.desc until the open question is resolved. That way
it could still help interested maintainers without implying a policy
violation.

Cheers,
gregor

And it's not grave either because if it happened for loads of people

 Please see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=395354 for

Bug#434043: beware: 1.3.4 unusable for Vietnamese people using Telex!

2008-03-14 Thread Jean Christophe André
   Hi Harshula,

Beware that the 1.3.4 version brings a first-try to get free typing
working in Vietnamese Telex input method and that it's so buggy that it
renders it quite unsusable for typing Vietnamese!

So I would rather prefer a step back to 1.3.1 than getting the 1.3.4 in
the way... Or get up to the 1.4.0 (which brings a correct Telex free
typing implementation) or later if possible.

BTW, the API started to change as soon as from 1.4.0, AFAIK.

Thanks for your work anyway! Cheers, JC.

 # XXX: is 'y' translatable?

 #, c-format

 msgstr y: %F

I don't think y is translatable here. Perhaps it should be, but
doing so is a bit awkward because this isn't just a yes/no prompt.

How about other places where indeed there is a prompt? Are there such
cases? Is aptitude able to do this sort of things?

What I mean is that I can't use the C library function to ask for a
yes/no result, because there are additional possible answers. There are
translatable default bindings for yes and no in the curses interface,
but these aren't used at the command-line.

I believe there are no simple yes/no prompts in aptitude's
command-line mode.

The menu entries should perhaps be split, as you note, but I'm not
sure I want to do that and break all the languages that have translated
them already (those are pretty old strings).

How about splitting and unfuzzying them automatically? I know it might be
tricky, but it should be fairly simple, just prepend the context to the
msgstr if there is a valid translation (no fuzzy).

(No, msguntypot is not able to do this task, it even has a bug that makes it
 drop plural forms [1]).

I could do that; it's just a matter of this versus tasks that are, in
my judgment, more important than getting hotkeys for the Help menu. If
someone else were to do that (hint hint) I would apply the patch.

But I can't remember if files are truly compatible between 1.3.1 and

perfectly fits our needs.

2008-03-14 Thread WU Zhaojun
Package: dash

*** Please type your report below this line ***
This bug was found when running the TuxOnIce's suspend2

arithmetic expression:

if [ $(($code3)) -eq 3 ] ; then

dash reports an error message as follows:

'arithmetic expression: expecting primary: 193'

It seems dash fails to parse this arithmetic expression
when there is *no space* between the operands (ie. $code
and 3) and the operator (ie. )

This bug only exists in the compiled dash binary distributed
within the .deb package. However, recompiling the binary file
from the corresponding .deb source files doesn't have this
problem.

The following simple script could be used to reproduce the
problem:

#!/bin/dash

else
echo no!

Irrelevant. It's common practice (established by former RMs) that bugs
which only affect a fraction of people and are not reproducible are not
grave.

For example: bugs caused by fglrx or nvidias binary-only drivers are not
fixable in any case; should bugs ike this (which would often be bugs in those
drivers) block unrelated packages? No.

I cannot reproduce this bug on my debian-amd64, but it is 100% reproducible
 on debian-i386.

Which I maybe cannot test. (In a chroot you'd have the amd64 X server
anyway).

Let's see what the fixed X server brings, if it fixes it it's not a bug
in the openoffice.org packages anyway and so it should not hold up
the important updates from 2.4 to reach testing.

Bug#470706: Acknowledgement (xfsprogs: xfs_repair crashes during attempted repair)

2008-03-14 Thread Kyle Gordon
Hi folks,

In my continuing efforts to reclaim my storage, I finished downgrading to
etch. This included downgrading libc6 and everything dependant on it to the
versions provided in etch (lots of package=x.x.x.x statements)

Rerunning xfs_repair with the etch versions of linux-image and libc6 appears
to allow it to complete successfully.

I guess the problem still stands with the testing version of libc6 / xfsprogs,
but that's your call :-)

Regards

Kyle

Bug#470918: sudo-ldap: uses wrong hostname

2008-03-14 Thread Lluis
Package: sudo-ldap
Version: 1.6.9p12-1
Severity: important

I've detected that sudo-ldap uses 'localhost' for looking up the 'sudoHost'
entries when the hostname is present in the lookpback (127.0.0.1) line of
/etc/hosts.

Symptoms:
  - 'sudoHost' check fails
  - 'sudo -p %h' shows 'localhost'

Solution:
  - Just removing the hostname from the line, or changing the IP of the
line (to e.g. 127.0.1.1) solved the problem.
The '127.0.0.1 localhost' can be left as-is.

Thanks,
  Lluis

ii dictionaries-common 0.96.1 Common utilities for spelling dict

aspell-de-alt recommends no packages.

-- no debconf information

When you have both packages installed aspell will only use the new spelling
even
when you set language to de-alt, de_CH-alt, de_DE or de. It works when
you
remove the package with the new spelling (alt is German for old).

You can distinguish the behavior by spell-checking a file with the word dass
(new spelling) and daß (old spelling).

By the way, as the new spelling is supposed to be the default now, maybe the
old
spelling should have the additional aliases de_DE-alt and de_AT-alt.

Regards, Steffen

Bug#470888: Winpdb - Bug report - #470888

2008-03-14 Thread Nir

Hi Martin,

Indeed name-space value representations are cropped at 128 characters by
design.
The name-space is designed to be fast and responsive since it updates
frequently (e.g. with each step).

When you double click a variable its representation fills the dialog
edit box only if it can be (re)evaluated to the original value.
Therefore cropped representations do not show up in this dialog. This is
by design as well.

You can use the Winpdb console eval command to examine the a variable
that has been cropped in the viewer.

Type help at the Winpdb console for more information.

Hi, i've seen that built packages miss cn=config related parts,

everything went good on debuilding, but i simply can't find it
in installed package

Bug#402531: debcommit: Should format commit messages better for Git

2008-03-14 Thread Darren Salt
I demand that Adam D. Barratt may or may not have written...

[snip]
On Mon, 2008-01-28 at 15:00 +, Darren Salt wrote:
I see the same bug here, or at least the results of this bug. hg log and
the hgweb summary view show only the first line of each, which can be
misleading as to the actual content of the changeset.

Does hg also follow a similar convention to git? (i.e. summary\n \ndetail)
Or is it simply detail\ndetail\ndetail\n with the first line of detail
being used as a summary by hg log?

The latter, although hg import, when given an RFC2822-compliant message,
will use the subject header (which, unfortunately, it doesn't unwrap) and the
body text as the commit message.

Here are a few example changesets:
 Multi-line single item:
   http://hg.debian.org/hg/xine-lib/pkg/xine-lib-1.2-deb?cmd=changeset;node=66

Would unfolding the changelog entry to a single line work here, or is
there still a limit to the number of characters that will be displayed?

Unwrapping that would work; I'm not aware of any upper limit.

 Multi-line multiple items:
   http://hg.debian.org/hg/xine-lib/pkg/xine-lib-1.2-deb?cmd=changeset;node=57

The answer to this question will probably be largely informed by the
previous two :) but would my earlier suggestion of creating an initial
message which the committer could then edit work in this case?

I see no reason why that wouldn't work.

Bug#462268: popcon: stay out of lenny for a while

2008-03-14 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
[Bill Allombert]
 Package: popularity-contest
 Version: 1.43
 Severity: serious
 Justification: in the maintainer opinion.

I would like to keep popularity-contest out of testing for
 1) See how many people use sid versus testing
 2) give us a chance to address the DOS issue in a better way.

The popcon version graph on URL:http://popcon.debian.org/ has
flattened out, and the increase for stable (1.41) since version 1.43
was uploaded to unstable is almost the same as the amount of hosts
registered using unstable (~5000). This make me suspect that the DOS
issue might be the reason we do not see more submissions registered.
On the other hand, the submissions in stable did not increase as the
exact same date as the upload was done to unstable. This make me more
unsure if the increase is related to the unstable upload or not.

Perhaps it is time to allow version 1.43 into testing, and see if the
amount of stable submissions increases with that amount (~14700)?

Anyone working on a different approach to avoid all clients in a given
time zone contacting the popcon server at the same time?

Happy hacking,
