Bug#478954: xfrisk: No GNOME menu entries ; these .desktop files fix that

2008-06-17 Thread Sam Morris
Please ship the .desktop files. Without them, your application won't
show up in a user's menu at all, unless they take the time to install
and use a non-default desktop environment, or configure their GNOME menu
to include the Debian menu.

Where does Found two discs with the number come from? I don't see this
 string in GRUB.

Whoops, it's 'disks' not 'discs'. The string is from disk/raid.c line

Sam, could you comment on this suggestion?

I guess it's possible, but I haven't had time to test it out since I
don't know how to switch to it without doing a backup/restore cycle.

I'd also like to add an additional key to the home device so that if I
screw up my swap partition, the home partition is also not destroyed...
the output of 'cryptsetup luksDump' implies that this is possible but I
don't know if doing so will interfere with cryptsetup, etc.

2008-06-22 Thread Sam Morris
Out of interest, what does setting index=-2 actually do? According to
the kernel documentation, a negative index interpreted as a bitmask of
permissable indices; the first free permitted index is assigned.

So doesn't this mean that users with three sound devices already present
on their system will not get snd-pcsp loaded? Consider that a user might
already have an onboard sound device, a discrete sound card, and a USB
microphone already...

Bug#487801: python-moinmoin: Difficult to run Moin in standalone mode

2008-06-24 Thread Sam Morris
Package: python-moinmoin
Version: 1.7.0-3
Severity: important

I can't figure out how to run Moin in standalone mode. Having copied
over the data and underlay directories, there are several ways to
proceed.

http://moinmo.in/DesktopEdition says that running 'python moin.py'
doesn't work. Ok, so this is because moin's files live in sys.path
rather than in the current directory, but running simply 'moin' just
spits out an error about not specifying a command.

Maybe those instructions are just bogus however. Looking at
http://moinmo.in/HelpOnInstalling/StandaloneServer it should be
possible to run 'moin --config-dir=/etc/moin server standalone
--docs=/usr/share/moin/htdocs', but this complains that the module
wikiserverconfig cannot be found. I tried creating a wikiserverconfig.py
based on /usr/share/moin/config/wikiconfig.py, but that gave me
'TypeError: __init__() takes exactly 2 arguments (1 given)'. Ok, I guess
I need to look elsewhere.

/usr/share/python-support/python-moinmoin/MoinMoin/server/server_standalone.py
contains some inline instructions for creating a server, and their code
runs, but then trying to access the wiki yields 'ImportError: No module
named wikiconfig'... renaming the script to wikiconfig.py gives me
'RuntimeError: You can run only one server per process!'. Hm...

I noticed that the original moin source archive contains a top-level
wikiserverconfig.py file that seems to do the job, except that accessing
the wiki complains that /org/mywiki/data does not exist. Even if I try
overriding data_dir in wikiserverconfig.py does not change this error.
It looks like the clever Debian /etc/moin directory containing the
farmconfig stuff is getting in the way, even though I don't want to use
it and am not importing anything from that directory (at least
deliberately).

Anyway I am giving up for now, hopefully someone can help by providing
some instructions to run moin in standalone/desktop mode. :)

If I can get a nice packaging, and Sam and you do not forbid me to take

to co-maintain it of course :)

I don't mind--I only knocked together a package for a friend anyway; I
don't actually have a UMTS modem myself.

One enhancement that I was unable to get working is the ability to
launch pppd as root, but keep the rest of the program running as the
current user. The only reason the whole thing is run as root at the
moment is to satisfy pppd's (outdated?) requirement that, if pppd is not
run as root, the remote end of the connection must authenticate itself
to pppd. Anyway, expect a bug report about this once the package appears
in Debian. :)

Bug#481345: xserver-xorg-video-intel: Xserver locks up when google earth is run

2008-06-25 Thread Sam Morris
I just ran into this again (but not with the updated intel driver and
mesa packages; I have now installed them and will see what changes).
Having rebooted, I examined the logs and tried to make it crash again,
but without success.

I now think that this is what is happening:

 1. the xserver dies
 2. gdm starts a new xserver. logs are rotated.
 3. the hardware was screwed in the crash, and the new xserver
causes the system to lock up.
 4. after rebooting, gdm starts the xserver and logs are rotated a
second time

So the log I originally posted is from the second xserver invocation
that causes the system to lock up, not from the first xserver that
originally screwed the hardware up.

This time I was unable to switch to tty1 to do anything. Hopefully next
time I'll have another system around to shell in and examine the
situation. I will also try to remember to boot up in single user mode to
try to recover the logs of the original xserver.

After a couple of test with a friend and a similar video card, I think
that enabling the Record 3D option before recording could fix the
 issue.

Confirmed, this fixes the problem. Thanks!

Can you please try it? Moreover, what wm are you using?

Metacity 2.22.

Bug#479570: sound-juicer: Can't find CD device when launched by nautilus 2.22

2008-05-05 Thread Sam Morris
Package: sound-juicer
Version: 2.22.0-1sam1
Severity: important
Tags: patch

sound-juicer under GNOME 2.22 does not recognise CDs. When I insert an audio
CD, sound-juicer is launched (by Nautilus) and its window appears, but it is
empty. I have to manually go to its preferences and change the CD drive to the
one that I inserted the CD into in order to get it to do anything.

This is filed upstream at
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=530423 and the patch
attached to that bug is sufficient to work around the issue until
sound-juicer is ported to GIO.

Bug#475727: bug #475727

2008-05-09 Thread Sam Morris
On Fri, 2008-05-09 at 09:31 -0500, John Goerzen wrote:
I'm looking at bug #475727 that you submitted to Debian. I am really not
sure what the bug you are reporting is... if the server refuses to store a
message that OfflineIMAP sends to it, exiting with a detailed error is, to
me, the correct behavior. OfflineIMAP cannot go mucking about with the
contents of messages, either; that is not universally the right thing to do.

 What are your thoughts?

Well, rather than aborting on each message, one by one, I'd like
offlineimap to skip the message and contiue with the others. Then, at
the end of the synch run, I'd like to be presented with a list of the
problematic messages.

When I was sorting out the mailbox that generated these problems, there
were about 30-40 messages with this problem, which meant that I had to
run offlineimap 30-40 times, and each time I had no idea how long it
would be until it failed again... so I had to babysit the process intead
of being able to leave it running overnight and sort out the failed
messages the next day.

It does.

Do you have a chance to downgrade to 1.8.2-1 again and see if that's
the reason? Remember to kill your running e-d-s completely before you
 start evolution.

I've just done that and it doesn't seem to make a difference--I still
have the same crash. :(

  (That's all I got.)

I want you to double-double check that downgrading doesn't help. I can
reproduce the crash with 1.8.2-2. I can start it with 'evolution -c
$COMPONENT' with $COMPONENT != mail and it will crash and burn when I
 change to mail view.

Oops, it seems I have libedataserver1.2-7 version 1.8.2-2 installed--I
just blindly downloaded installed the package files you listed in your
original email :)

When you downgrade, make sure you downgrade libedataserver1.2-7 to
1.8.2-1, as that's the library causing the crash. If it still crashes
after the first attempt, run evolution --force-shutdown or kill e-d-s
 manually and try again.

Downloading _just_ libedataserver1.2-7 causes another crash, backtrace
following in case it's relevant to anything. I then downgraded _all_ of
e-d-s' binary packages to version 1.8.2-1, and Evolution started working
again--thanks :)

Bug#362432: mozilla-mplayer: Non-functional with Epiphany

2006-04-13 Thread Sam Morris
Package: mozilla-mplayer
Version: 3.25-1
Severity: important

Recently the plugin stopped working with Epiphany. I think that this coincided
with the last update to libxul but I'm not sure.

With version 3.21-3, the plugin appeared in about:plugins but when
navigating to a file that it should support, instead only a blank page
loaded. When I went to web pages containing movies, the movie object did
not even appear on the page, it was as if the EMBED/OBJECT element was
not even in the page's HTML.

With version 3.25-1, the plugin does not even appear in about:plugins. There
are no messages from Epiphany about why the plugin couldn't be loaded as
there were with the older version if mozilla was not installed.

Both versions work fine with Firefox.

Bug#322971: Use dbus?

2006-04-15 Thread Sam Morris
Evolution 2.6 now has a 'new mail notification' plugin that 'generates a
D-BUS message when new mail arrives'. I guess the plugin should make use
of the DBUS notification.

Bug#362904: Stores core file in ~/News rather than ~/.pan2

2006-04-16 Thread Sam Morris
Package: pan
Version: 0.92-1
Severity: normal

It's pretty annoying how Pan keeps creating a ~/News directory and
storing the Score file inside it, when it could use ~/.pan2 which would
avoid cluttering up the user's HOME directory.

Bug#362909: pan: Pan aborts with std::length_error thrown from basic_string::resize

2006-04-16 Thread Sam Morris

When checking subscribed groups for new articles, Pan aborts with:

terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::length_error'

The full backtrace is attached. Would you consider providing a pan-dbg package,
at
least while the beta versions of Pan are in experimental?

Bug#363053: evolution: Associate with text/calendar MIME type

2006-04-17 Thread Sam Morris
Package: evolution-webcal
Version: 2.6.0-2
Severity: wishlist

Evolution should provide a .desktop file[0] so that
/usr/lib/evolution-webcal/evolution-webcal is associated with
text/calendar files. This will allow users to import calendars such as
the one on http://www.us.debian.org/events/2006/0514-debconf just by
clicking on the calendar link.

A file such as the following should do the job; place it at
/usr/share/applications/evolution-webcal.desktop:

Name=Evolution web calendar import handler
MimeType=text/calendar

Some articles are not displayed in the message pane, or only the last
few lines of the message are displayed. Maybe this has something to do
with decoding MIME-encoded messages.

A message that just triggered this bug is available from news.gmane.org in
gmane.linux.ubuntu.devel, 'Re: ubuntu-desktop brltty' by Peter Whittaker,

Bug#287271: Question about /etc/dev.d/block/hal-unmount.dev

2006-04-19 Thread Sam Morris
Is /etc/dev.d/block/hal-unmount.dev still a part of Hal 0.5.7? On my
system it is the only file left in /etc/dev.d and I'm wondering if it is
just detritus hanging around from 0.4.x that can be safely deleted.

Bug#363633: RFP: systrace -- Interactive Policy Generation for System Calls

2006-04-19 Thread Sam Morris
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

  Package name: systrace
  Version : 1.6c
  Upstream Author : Niels Provos
  URL : http://www.citi.umich.edu/u/provos/systrace/
  License : BSD
Description : Interactive Policy Generation for System Calls

Systrace enforces system call policies for applications by
constraining the application's access to the system. The
policy is can be generated interactively; operations not covered
by the policy raise an alarm and allow an user to refine the
currently configured policy, or deny the unauthorised operation.

 * Confines untrusted binary applications
 * Interactive policy generation with optional graphical interface
 * Non-interactive policy enforcement
 * System call argument rewriting
 * Remote monitoring and intrusion detection

Systrace has two backends; one of them requires a kernel patch. The
other backend uses the ptrace system call. It is slower and not as
feature-full as the kernel backend.

Bug#363633: systrace package for debian

2006-04-20 Thread Sam Morris

just saw your request for a systrace debian package. I have been

It would be nice to have xsystrace as a recommended package for
Systrace. Do you think that you could file a request for that, too?

Hm, I thought it was part of the systrace tarball but now I see it's a
separate download:
http://www.citi.umich.edu/u/provos/systrace/gtk-systrace-2003-06-23.tar.gz

It seems a bit out of date, and installs to /usr/X11R6 which is about to
disappear in unstable, but maybe someone will be able to nurse it back
to health.

I'll CC this to the bug report I filed for systrace.

Bug#364072: nvidia-glx: All but one of my video modes have disappeared

2006-04-21 Thread Sam Morris
Package: nvidia-glx
Version: 1.0.8756-2
Severity: important

Since upgrading to version 8756 of the driver, all but one of my video
modes has disappeared. This beaks any game or other program that wants to
change to a lower resoultion.

I am unable to change to any video mode other than 1280x960:

$ xrandr
 SZ:Pixels Physical Refresh
 *0 1280 x 960( 339mm x 254mm ) *85
 Current rotation - normal
 Current reflection - none
 Rotations possible - normal
 Reflections possible - none

In older versions of the driver, there were about 15 choices going all
the way down to 320x240.

Xorg's config and log files are attached.

Bug#364072: nvidia-glx: All but one of my video modes have disappeared

I am unable to change to any video mode other than 1280x960:

No miracle, you (or an Xorg update!) commented out all the resolutions but
 one:

  #Modes 1600x1200 1280x1024 1152x864 1024x768
  832x624 800x600 720x400 640x480
  Modes 1280x960

I have it configured that deliberately--until 8756, the X server and/or
nvidia driver would generate a list of all the modes supported by my
monitor automatically.

The highest mode it detects is 1600x1200; this is too high to be
readable on my monitor so I specified 'Modes 1280x960' so that it
would only generated modes up to and including that resolution.

I just took out the Modes line entirely and restarted X and am now stuck
in 1600x1200. This is definitely a regression from previous versions of
the driver, albeit one that we can do nothing about.

Bug#352216: Not really ideal

2006-04-21 Thread Sam Morris
This isn't really what I meant. I did as you suggested, but beagled took
hours to index the directories, and the index in ~/.beagle shot up to
250 MB. This penalty would be multiplied by the number of users on the
system.

I was thinking more along the lines of a weekly cron job that used
beagle-build-index to build a static index of all installed
documentation, that could then be shared by all users.

2006-04-21 Thread Sam Morris
severity 349392 important
retitle 349392 ntp: abuses pool.ntp.org as default time source
thanks

According to The NTP Pool for Vendors [0] it seems that Debian's
default ntp.conf should be using '{0,1,2}.debian.pool.ntp.org' as the
server hostnames.

Please note that the document states:

You must absolutely not use the default pool.ntp.org zone names
as the default configuration in your application or appliance.

Since the default config file shipped by the ntp package contravenes
this instruction, I am raising the severity of this bug.

Bug#352901: gnome-session: Unable to remove seahorse from gnome session

2006-02-14 Thread Sam Morris
Package: gnome-session
Version: 2.12.0-4
Severity: normal

Whenever I log into gnome, I get three instances of Seahorse's
'encryption key manager' window on the desktop. When I run
gnome-session-properties and look under 'current session', I see
'seahorse' listed once, with order 50, no 'style' icon and the weird
sprocket icon under 'state'. I removed this entry and pressed Apply, but
the three entries in ~/.gnome2/session remain, and the windows still
appear when I log in again.

Attached is the .gnome2/session file in question.

Bug#352473: nautilus: 'Windows Network' is empty

For the last few days, the Windows Network (smb://) location in Nautilus has
been empty. However, network browsing by other means (smbclient/nmnlookup,
smbnetfs and and browsing from within Windows itself) is working fine.

You're just missing the libgnomevfs2-extras package.

Do you mean libgnomevfs2-extra? I have that installed. And anyway,
wouldn't the library throw some kind of error if I asked for smb:// when
there was no handler for smb installed?

$ gnomevfs-ls blah://
Error opening: Invalid URI
$ gnomevfs-ls smb://

Bug#353083: sysv-rc: Update link to additional documentation in /etc/init.d/README

2006-02-15 Thread Sam Morris
Package: sysv-rc
Version: 2.86.ds1-12
Severity: wishlist

/etc/init.d/README points the user to /usr/share/doc/sysvinit for 'some more
detailed info' about Debian's init system. However the file README.runlevels
was moved to /usr/share/doc/sysv-rc some time ago. The /etc/init.d/README file
should be updated with the new path.

(I would also put the information about shell scripts ending in .sh having to
work correctly when sourced under a separate heading.)

I am now seeing this too. Instead of the confirmation dialog, the X

can't type anything. I switched to a tty and tried to run xlsclients,
but it just hung while, waiting for the X server to respond. Switching
back to X's virtual terminal revealed an screen that was black except
for the mouse pointer.

Is there anything relevant in ~/.xsession-errors
 or /var/log/Xorg.0.log ?

Ok, I have solved this one. It is caused by a bad interaction between
gnome-session's logout dialog box and xcompmgr. When the dialog is
displayed, xcompmgr is frozen and so the screen will no longer update.
It turns out the keyboard *does* work, but without the screen updating I
didn't notice. :)

(The xlsclients breakage is also caused by gnome-session's logout dialog
box, BTW.)

The same behaviour can be caused by sending xcompmgr SIGSTOP, including
the blank screen when switching away from X and back again.

I'm not reassigning the bug since I don't know whether this is the fault
of gnome-session, or of xcompmgr.

Bug#304370: Still reproducable?

2006-02-19 Thread Sam Morris
With the latest upstream version (0.4.3) I am no longer able to
reproduce the crash that python-nautilus caused for me[0]. Could you
guys try it out?

I also made a couple of changes to make the package easier to use. The
diff is attached.

Bug#353045: Info about the missing symbol (put_be32)

2006-02-20 Thread Sam Morris
put_be32 is defined in 'gst-libs/ext/ffmpeg/libavformat/aviobuf.c'. It
is wrapped by #ifdef CONFIG_MUXERS. From gst-libs/ext/ffmpeg/configure.ac:

 AC_FF_ALLOW_DISABLE(CONFIG_ENCODERS, encoders, compilation of encoders)
 CONFIG_MUXERS=$CONFIG_ENCODERS

So it's the --disable-encoders argument to configure that is breaking the
package.

Bug#353045: The symbol is referenced from...

2006-02-20 Thread Sam Morris
I changed the declaration of put_be32's prototype to be conditional on
the definition of CONFIG_MUXERS and so found out that the symbol is
referenced from:

 png.c: In function 'png_write_chunk':
png.c:660: warning: implicit declaration of function 'put_be32'
 rtp.c: In function 'rtcp_send_sr':
rtp.c:578: warning: implicit declaration of function 'put_be32'

These functions use a bunch of similar symbols that are all condifional
on CONFIG_MUXERS: put_byte, put_be16, put_be32, put_be64,
put_flush_packet and put_le32.

So, either:
 * CONFIG_MUXERS should not be set blindly to the same value as CONFIG_ENCODERS
 * The function prototypes for these functions in avio.h should be
conditional, and png_write_chunk and rtcp_send_sr should not use them
 * The definitions for these functions in aviobuf.c should *not* be
   conditional
 * Something else that may be obvious to someone who knows anything
   about ffmpeg ;)

Bug#353045: a rubbish patch

2006-02-21 Thread Sam Morris
From looking at ffmpeg's latest CVS code, the problematic function
definitions are either wrapped by:

 #if defined(CONFIG_MUXERS) || defined(CONFIG_PROTOCOLS)

or are not inside CONFIG_MUXERS at all.

Therefore the problem is caused by gst-ffmpeg including a buggy/outdated
version of ffmpeg, or else by their autoconf stuff.

Since this will eventually be fixed when gstreamer updates or fixes
their copy of ffmpeg, I have made a patch that moves only the missing
symbols outside of the #ifdefs. In addition, since the file that
contains 'mpegts_crc32' is only compiled if CONFIG_ENCODERS is enabled,
I copied the code for that function to mpegts.c, where it is referenced.

this problem.

Olivier, could you please try the package of 1.6 I have put at
http://robots.org.uk/debian/sensors-applet_1.6-1_i386.deb? (It has not
yet been uploaded to Debian due to copyright issues).

Why would you want 2.6 packages? The 2.6 kernel includes ALSA drivers
already, and providing alsa-modules packages would be of use for a very
small percentage of the Debian users.
The version of alsa in 2.6.8 is, I think, only 1.0.4; but packages for
1.0.8 will soon be entering sarge. I guess I am just trying to make life
easier for the users who have hardware that doesn't work on the
9-month-old version of alsa, including me. :)

Bug#366139: Provide .desktop file so that update-notifier is started automatically

2006-05-05 Thread Sam Morris
Package: update-notifier
Version: 0.41.3-1
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

The freedesktop.org autostart-spec provides a mechanism by which
per-session daemons can register to be started automatically when a
user logs in. Basically this involves creating a .desktop file for
smart-notifier and dropping it into /etc/xdg/autostart. Further details
are available from http://standards.freedesktop.org/autostart-spec/.

This will ensure that smart-notifier is started for ths users of any
desktop environment that implements the spec. Currently this includes
GNOME, KDE (I think) XFCE, Rox and maybe others.

Here's a suitable file:

Bug#366288: beagle: Unable to install -- requires a newer adduser?

2006-05-06 Thread Sam Morris
Package: beagle
Version: 0.2.6-1
Severity: grave

Justification: package is uninstallable

Setting up beagle (0.2.6-1) ...
adduser: No options allowed after names.
dpkg: error processing beagle (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 255

I still have adduser 3.63 (the version from Sarge) installed. I guess
beagle should (pre-(?))depend on a newer adduser, or beagle.postinst
should be changed:

BTW, shouldn't the script test for the existence of the 'beagleindex'
user rather than 'smokeping'?

This is with hal 0.5.7-2. So can this bug be closed?

Bug#367445: sun-java5: Provide data for shared-mime-info database

2006-05-15 Thread Sam Morris
Package: sun-java5
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

Currently the package places files in /usr/share/mime-info, which
provides info for the old GNOME mime system. I think these files were
last used by gnome-vfs 2.6.

Current versions of GNOME use the freedesktop.org shared-mime-info
database. Since you are using dh_installmime, creating
debian/sharedmimeinfo with the following content should suffice:

?xml version=1.0?
mime-info xmlns='http://www.freedesktop.org/standards/shared-mime-info'
mime-type type=application/java-archive
commentJava Archive/comment
glob pattern=*.jar/
/mime-type

mime-type type=application/x-java-jnlp-file
commentJava Web Start application/comment
glob pattern=*.jnlp/
/mime-type
/mime-info

Although the obsolete files are harmless if left installed, my
preference would be to remove them to reduce the level of cruft
on systems where the package is installed, as well as user
confusion. The same applies to the files in
/usr/share/application-registry, which have been supersceded
by the .desktop files in /usr/share/applications.

Bug#367445: Install icons as well

2006-05-15 Thread Sam Morris
I forgot to mention that you can install the icons from the JRE package
and get icons associated with the MIME types in GNOME.

I was doing this in my package's debian/rules file:

install/jdk-1.5.0:: prelink-stamp debian/install
   # icons for mime types
for theme in hicolor HighContrast{,Inverse} LowContrast; \
   do \
  for mimetype in {application-java-archive,application-x-java-jnlp-file}; \
  do \

target=${DEB_DESTDIR}/usr/share/icons/$$theme/48x48/mimetypes/$$mimetype.png; \
 install --mode=644 -D ${UNZIP_DIR}/jre/lib/images/icons/sun-java.png
$$target; \
 ln -s $$(basename $$target) $$(dirname
$$target)/gnome-mime-$$mimetype.png; \
  done; \
   done

Basically the idea is to create
$icon_theme/$size/mimetypes/gnome-mime-$mime.png, where $mime is the
MIME type of the icon with the '/' turned into a '-'.

I had been using the MIME types specified in the obsolete mime-info
files, but I just noticed
that /usr/share/mime/packages/freedesktop.org.xml already contains
definitions for 'application/x-java-jnlp-file' and
'application/x-jar' (*not* 'application/jar'); so I guess you don't have
to bother with the above debian/sharedmimeinfo file after all.

Bug#262340: Only if you have no home page

Focus goes to the address bar only if your homepage is set to the blank
page. If not, then the Gecko widget steals the focus when the page
starts to load.

Bug#355283: epiphany: Fails to use /etc/hosts correctly

2006-03-23 Thread Sam Morris
Did you restart epiphany after altering /etc/hosts? AFAIK, glibc only
reads /etc/hosts once when a program is started, so subsequent changes
go un-noticed.

Bug#358599: epiphany-browser: Garbled page display on some BTS pages

2006-03-23 Thread Sam Morris
Package: epiphany-browser
Version: 1.8.5-2
Severity: normal

Epiphany displays a page containing garbled text on certain BTS pages; I
noticed the problem on
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=267799. The
corruption appears on ~4 out of 5 page reloads, in a different place each
time, but always in an area involving non-ASCII characters.

The BTS administrator suggested that it's a problem with the browser;
the page is served as UTF-8, however the characters that trigger the
problem are not encoded in UTF-8 (Basically, that mail message has a
invalid content-type, so the bts assumes that it is valid utf-8 and doesn't
bother to do anything to it. It's most likely iso8859-1 instead.).

While the BTS should perhaps convert anything with an invalid
content-type into plain ASCII before presenting it as UTF-8, displaying it,
the browser should still handle this more gracefully. :)

I'm attaching a screenshot of the corruption. Note that it doesn't just
bungle the display of the characters in question: there is some random HTML
code in there, and even a couple of checkboxes, so it's possible that the
contents of other tabs, or previously viewed pages are leaking in. The first
time I triggered the bug, a followup for a different bug (from 2006) was
inserted into the page for #267799 (from 2004)!

Finally, I can't reproduce the problem with Firefox.

Bug#360165: initscripts: Don't mount /proc/bus/usb if it's not necessary

2006-03-30 Thread Sam Morris
Package: initscripts
Version: 2.86.ds1-13
Severity: wishlist

Since kernel 2.6.14 (I think), /proc/bus/usb has not been necessary
since udev will create device nodes for usb devices in /dev/bus/usb.
Since libusb 2:0.1.10a-22, libusb try and look for devices in /dev/bus/usb
before searching /proc/bus/usb.

I have commented out the code that mounts the usbfs in mountkernfs.sh
with no ill effect. It would be nice if the script would only mount the
usbfs if /dev/bus/usb is not available to manage the device nodes for
USB devices.

Bug#352127: xbase-clients: Unable to use startx/xinit with a terminal emulator as the client

2006-02-09 Thread Sam Morris
Package: xbase-clients
Version: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-4
Severity: important

I can unable to use startx or xinit to start an X session with a terminal
emulator as the client. The command I am using is 'startx xterm'.

With xterm, the window appears but a shell is never run. The mouse
cursor flickers when it hovers over the xterm window.

When I try rxvt, the entire window flickers constantly; when I try
gnome-terminal, the window appears and then disappears and the X session
ends.

Everything works if I use twm as the client.

Bug#352131: gnome-control-center: gnome-settings-daemon quits after being launched; gnome-session restarts it, gets into some kind of loop, and sometimes segfaults, sometimes locks up

2006-02-09 Thread Sam Morris
Package: gnome-control-center
Version: 1:2.12.2-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I altered a layout-related option in gnome-keyboard-properties, when
suddenly my Gnome theme reverted to the default GTK+ theme. Then it
continued to alternate between the clearlooks and GTK+ themes, meanwhile
the CPU was pegged at 100%. I logged out and in again to try to
reproduce this behaviour, but I find I can no longer get a usable Gnome
session up and running.

As best I can work out, gnome-settings-daemon is quitting after being
launched (output attached). gnome-session then restarts it, but it exits
immediatly. gnome-session won't take 'no' for an answer and keeps
launching it. Sometimes this causes gnome-session to segfault after a
few moments; sometimes it just locks up and the login process freezes
with 'Starting window manager' displayed in the splash screen. In such a
case, gnome-panel either likewise freezes half way through loading, or
gets in a loop of restarting after displaying 'detected another panel
running'.

I am also attaching the output of running 'GSM_VERBOSE_DEBUG=1
gnome-session --failsafe' while the above happened, and a transcript of
my attempt to get a backtrace of the failure of gnome-settings-daemon.
I don't know why gdb didn't break on gdk_x_error. :(

Bug#352134: Can't restore gossip from notification-icon state without a notification area

2006-02-09 Thread Sam Morris
Package: gossip
Version: 0.9-1.1
Severity: normal

I normally hide the gossip window by clicking on its icon in the
notification area. However right now I am unable to log into Gnome, and
have fallen back to twm. In twm, and presumably other window managers
that do not provide a notification area, there is no way to get the
gossip window back!

I worked around the problem by unsetting
/apps/gossip/ui/main_window_hidden in gconf-editor; however I had to
restart gossip for this to take effect. IMO gossip should ignore this
setting entirely if there is no notification for it to place its icon
in.

Hm, I did before I read your message! Now I am no longer seeing the
segfault at all, though most of the search queries I try that I know
should work return no hits for filesystem objects. I guess this is
really a separate issue though.

For the last few days, the Windows Network (smb://) location in Nautilus has
been empty. However, network browsing by other means (smbclient/nmnlookup,

Nautilus doesn't appear to be timing out; reloading the view instantly
returns 0 items.

Bug#364830: gnome-control-center: gnome-settings-daemon makes the X server segfault

2006-04-25 Thread Sam Morris
Package: gnome-control-center
Version: 1:2.12.3-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

When I try to log in to Gnome, the X server segfaults (leaving my
console in a very bad state, I have to shell in from another machine
to fix it).

Attached is the X server's log file. Noticing that it dies while
setting up the keymap, I logged in with just an xterm and ran
gnome-settings-daemon, and the server died again.

This happens since the upgrade of libxklavier10 to version 2.2-3.
The output of gconftool -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard.
is also attached.

I can't seem to crash the server by issuing setxkbmap commands to enact
my Gnome keyboard configuration. I also can't crash a nested server by
launching gnome-settings-daemon.

Bug#336214: gdm ignores user and system umask settings

2006-04-28 Thread Sam Morris
severity 336214 minor
thanks

I think that /etc/login.defs is only (reliably) processed by login. Most
of the options are being replaced by PAM modules, which will work for
any PAM-enabled application.

As for /etc/profile and ~/.profile, these are read by login shells, not
GDM.

You can set your umask with the following methods:

 1. system-wide: use the libpam-umask package [0]
 2. system-wide: call umask from a script in /etc/X11/Xsession.d
 3. system-wide: call umask from /etc/gdm/Xsession
 4. user-specific: call umask from ~/.gdmrc [1]

[0] currently doesn't work with GDM; see #314791 and #321620
[1] only processed if logging into GNOME,
see /etc/X11/Xsession.d/55gnome-session_gnomerc

Bug#365296: alsa-base: Run 'alsactl names' on device add/remove

2006-04-28 Thread Sam Morris
Package: alsa-base
Version: 1.0.11-1
Severity: wishlist

While trying to find out what the best/official way for an audio
application to discover what devices are available on the system, I
stumbled upen a thread on alsa-devel [0] that states that the
right way to do this is to call the snd_names_list function, present
since ALSA 1.0.9.

This file relies on the existance of /etc/asound.names, which can be
generated by running 'alsactl names'. I suggest doing this whenever
an ALSA device is added to or removed from the system, thereby keeping
the file up to date at all times.

In case the administrator wants to modify the file, I suggest running
something like 'alsactl --file=/var/lib/alsa/asound.names' and having
/etc/asound.names be a symlink to that file; the link can be replaced
by a regular file if the admin wants to maintain it himself.

!-- Process this file with docbook-to-man to generate an nroff manual
		 page: `docbook-to-man manpage.sgml manpage.1'. You may view
the manual page with: `docbook-to-man manpage.sgml | nroff -man |
less'. A typical entry in a Makefile or Makefile.am is:

	manpage.1: manpage.sgml
		docbook-to-man $ $@

The docbook-to-man binary is found in the docbook-to-man package.
Please remember that if you create the nroff version in one of the
debian/rules file targets (such as build), you will need to include
docbook-to-man in your Build-Depends control field.
