That doesn't sound like an RC bug in the scim package. Packages are allowed
to Suggest: packages not present in the archive.

In case of setting serverCallTimeOutPeriod in /etc/omniORB4.cfg
or by command line, omniORB does not honour the timeout which
leads to inaccessibility of any server application, if too many
client connections are not closed by the client side.

The patch is by Duncan Grisby (omniORB upstream) and will
be included in CVS and upcoming 4.0.6, I hope.

Bug#300182: tetex-bin still vulnerable to CAN-2004-0888 (CAN-2005-0206)

2005-03-21 Thread Martin Pitt
Hi!

Hilmar, where did you see patches like

+if (pagesSize*(int)sizeof(Page *)/sizeof(Page *) != pagesSize ||
+pagesSize*(int)sizeof(Ref)/sizeof(Ref) != pagesSize) {

in the current tetex-bin package? debian/patches/patch-CAN-2004-0888
already has correct patches. Also, "advanced static code analysis"
shows that the wrong approach is not used:

~/tex/tetex-bin-2.0.2 $ grep -r 'pagesSize.*sizeof' .
./libs/xpdf/xpdf/Catalog.cc:  pages = (Page **)gmalloc(pagesSize * sizeof(Page
*));
./libs/xpdf/xpdf/Catalog.cc:  pageRefs = (Ref *)gmalloc(pagesSize *
sizeof(Ref));
./libs/xpdf/xpdf/Catalog.cc:pages = (Page **)grealloc(pages, pagesSize *
sizeof(Page *));
./libs/xpdf/xpdf/Catalog.cc:pageRefs = (Ref *)grealloc(pageRefs, pagesSize
* sizeof(Ref));
./debian/patches/patch-CAN-2004-0888:+  if (pagesSize >= INT_MAX/sizeof(Page *)
||
./debian/patches/patch-CAN-2004-0888:+  pagesSize >= INT_MAX/sizeof(Ref)) {
./debian/patches/patch-CAN-2004-0888:   pages = (Page **)gmalloc(pagesSize *
sizeof(Page *));
./debian/patches/patch-CAN-2004-0888:   pageRefs = (Ref *)gmalloc(pagesSize *
sizeof(Ref));
./debian/patches/patch-CAN-2004-0888:+if (pagesSize >=
INT_MAX/sizeof(Page *) ||
./debian/patches/patch-CAN-2004-0888:+pagesSize >=
INT_MAX/sizeof(Ref)) {
./debian/patches/patch-CAN-2004-0888:   pages = (Page **)grealloc(pages,
pagesSize * sizeof(Page *));
./debian/patches/patch-CAN-2004-0888:   pageRefs = (Ref *)grealloc(pageRefs,
pagesSize * sizeof(Ref));

At the time the patch was fixed, the new CAN number was not yet
assigned, so it does not appear in the changelog. So it would be nice
to add the CAN to the changelog.

This was the relevant upload (I think):

tetex-bin (2.0.2-24) unstable; urgency=high

  * SECURITY UPDATE: more buffer overflows in xpdf library, thanks to
Martin Pitt <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> for the tetex-bin-specific patch, which
fixes more integer overflows discovered by Markus Meissner
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, thanks to him for discovering this.
  * Added debian/patches/patch-CAN-2004-0888. This patch contains the
first fix included in the last upload, as well as the additional fixes
from this upload, which are:
  [...]

Please close this bug.

Bug#300705: udev relies on /tmp to be a directory...

2005-03-21 Thread Marc Schiffbauer
Package: udev
Version: 0.054-3
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

Hi,

after the last udev update my system did not come up anymore because
udev failed to start and then no partitions but / had been found...

The Problem: udev relies on /tmp to be a directory on startup. On my
System /tmp is only a symlink to /var/tmp which made udev not start.

Suggested solution:

Do not use /tmp for temporary mounts on system start or test it to be a
real directory. Maybe it would be better to create a temporary dir for
startup:

TMP="$(mktemp -d /udev-startup-XX)"

and then use $TMP to mount temp things instead of /tmp

Bug#300395: po4a: FTBFS: tries to get Terminal Size on build

2005-03-21 Thread Martin Quinson
Hello,

I cannot reproduce this bug on my machine, and I'm thus embarrassed to fix
it. I mean that a clean pbuild does not trigger the fix on my box. Does it
come from the fact that I call pbuilder from the command line while you have
a robot (cronjob?) calling it for you?

Anyway, I would really appreciate if you could test the attached patch. I
plan to upload a package with this change tomorow or so, but I'd prefer to
make sure it's the right fix before loading the servers.

Thanks for your time,
Mt.

This can be trivially worked around by creating a /var/tmp directory on the
root filesystem, or by making /tmp a bind mount to /var/tmp instead of a
symlink. There's no justification for making this a release-critical bug in
udev, as you've made changes to the base system that are not guaranteed to
be supported.

Package: libgtksourceview-cil
Version: 0.5-2
Severity: minor

Hi guys,

According to:
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome-devtools/2005-January/msg00010.html
a final GtkSourceView 1.1.2 tarball will be released for GNOME 2.8.x in
the next few days.

GtkSourceView 1.1.2 will clash with libgtksourceview-cil due to
/usr/share/gtksourceview-1.0/language-specs/nemerle.lang being in both.

When I release libgtksourceview-1.1.2 it will:
Conflicts: libgtksourceview-cil (<=3D 0.5-2)
So as to avoid any delays getting GtkSourceView 1.1.2 into Sarge, could
you please upload a libgtksourceview-cil 0.5-3 package that will depend
upon libgtksourceview-common (>=3D 1.1.2) into unstable now?

Cheers,
Andrew "Netsnipe" Lau

Bug#297149: compile with 0.60

2005-03-21 Thread Ognyan Kulev
Hi,
I've successfully build this package by using 0.60 definitions. Here is
what I did:

* Download ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/aspell/dict/bn/aspell6-bn-0.01.1-1.tar.bz2
* Unpack and rename directory to aspell-bn-0.60.0.01.1.1
* apt-get source aspell-bn
* cp -R aspell-bn-0.50.1/debian aspell-bn-0.60.0.01.1.1
* cd aspell-bn-0.60.0.01.1.1
* dch -i and add new version aspell-bn-0.60.0.01.1.1-1
* dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -uc -uc
BTW the following errors occur while building package:
dh_gencontrol
dpkg-gencontrol: warning: unknown substitution variable ${shlibs:Depends}
dpkg-gencontrol: warning: unknown substitution variable ${misc:Depends}
dh_md5sums

Bug#300185: FTBFS in experimental

2005-03-21 Thread Martin Pitt
Hi!

Andreas Barth [2005-03-18 10:29 +0100]:
> Automatic build of postgresql-7.4_1:7.4.7-1 on notos by sbuild/powerpc 1.170.5
> /usr/include/tcl8.4/tk.h:96:29: X11/Xlib.h: No such file or directory

I really don't understand this. This seems to happen at random,
affects the Sarge/Sid version as well and seems to affect only some
architectures.

Xlib.h is in libx11-dev, tk8.4-dev needs it and depends on it. The
build log shows that the package is installed:

Selecting previously deselected package libx11-dev.
Unpacking libx11-dev (from .../libx11-dev_4.3.0.dfsg.1-12_powerpc.deb) ...
[...]
Setting up libx11-dev (4.3.0.dfsg.1-12) ...
[...]

Previous psotgresql versions have built fine with exactly the same
build dependencies. Maybe tk8.4-dev or XFree86 introduced a change
which could explain this weirdness?

Thanks for any idea,

Martin

/usr/include/X11 could be missing in the chroot; -I/usr/X11R6/include
should be there in any case, but maybe it isn't?

I experienced same case on my arm experimental buildd.
The problem of my case was caused by broken xfree86-common
(uninstallation failed). Andreas, did you check it?

Hi,

I just followed the instructions from modules-assistant. If this is
not acceptable anymore, can you give me a hint how I should build
the package.

I'll check the chroot and re-queue the package and see if it fails
again.

Please ask on -devel, I think there's enough information in the
bugreport to point out what exactly the problem is. Basically, your
package should just build with dpkg-buildpackage, and you should make
your package have a correct debian/control (NOT generated at build time,
never!), and invoke module-assistant or whatever needed in debian/rules.
Alternatively, let the user build the modules they want. Just do not do
it the 'user' way, and consequently upload that.

Many thanks for reporting this. Especially that it depends on the locale.
This will probably explain why I wasn't able to reproduce #299500.
Mathieu, can you confirm that lincvs starts fine for you as well if you
start it with `LANG=en lincvs' ?
I can reproduce the error here and will forward this to upstream.

Package: libbatik-java
Version: 1.5final-3
Severity: wishlist

New upstream release 1.5.1 is available. Change Log reproduced below. I
was unable to find a CVE for the security issue.

Change Log
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D

The following log records some of the most important changes.
Bug fixing is an on-going task, so it is implied in all sub-releases.

1.5 -> 1.5.1

1. Security:

   A script security issue was reported in the Batik Squiggle
   browser. Squiggle uses the Rhino scripting engine and some features
   of that engine can be leveraged by malicious scripts to gain access
   to otherwise protected resources (like the file system).

   The Batik team has worked with the Rhino team to fix the isssue
   that was reported and the Batik 1.5.1 patch release addresses the=20
   issue.

2. Features:

   Rhino JavaScript Debugger now integrated with Squiggle.
   Better line numbers in error messages.
   Zachary DelProposto's Scroll pane class is added. Allows for
  scrollbars on SVG documents.
   Cool solitaire examples in SVG.

3. Performance fixes:

   Parents who have children added/removed no longer invalidate
  their entire area.
   When a element is removed or CSS properties changed all next
  siblings are not repainted unless CSS rules change them.
   First event dispatch is much quicker than the past.
   Switched to Xerces 2.5.0 to improve performance of data protocol.
   Changes to paint properties on text is now _much_ faster.
   When using many objects from an external file the file will only
 be loaded/parsed once.
   Modifying x/y and some viewBox changes on SVG elements is now much
 faster.
   Better JPEG embedding in PDF.

4. Conformance:
   Batik now passes all non SMIL-Animation tests from the SVG Working
 Group beSuite.

   @font-face CSS property and font-face elements are now compliant
 with SVG specification.

   Changes to the 'class' attribute now update rendering tree
 correctly.

   selectSubString now implemented.

   Dynamic modification of display, and marker properties supported.
   SVG 'a' element respects 'preventDefault' on event object.
   Pattern element no longer applies object bounding box transform
  if viewBox is specified.

5. Bugs:

   Fullscreen mode (F11) works again.
   getExtentOfChar() returns bbox in text elements coordinate system.
   SVGPoint now supports matrixTransform in more cases
   clientX/Y now correct wh

Bug#298922: mesa: FTBFS: /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lGL

2005-03-21 Thread Lars Wirzenius
Kurt:
> /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lGL

This would seem to be because mesa is missing a Build-Depends on
xlibmesa-gl-dev. If I give the following command, pbuilder will
successfully build packages:

  pbuilder build --extrapackages "build-essential xlibmesa-gl-dev" *.dsc

Marcelo, adding that and uploading a new package should fix it,
therefore. If you don't have time, please indicate, someone will be
happy to do an NMU.

 Argh!  No...

 The mesa package does not require mesa to build itself and much less
 mesa from the X tree...

 The fix should be on its way to the archive soon, I just have to sort a
 little bandwidth problem out (13 kB of .diff.gz produces 13 MB of
 packages :-\ which is no fun behind a modem line)

 Those are big words Steve. Unless I'm missing something rather
 obvious, the fix ammounts to removing one "#" and adding a couple of
 lines to debian/rules, which I've done and I'm just waiting for the
 package to build.

 It was rather unfortunate that the packages percollated thru NEW during
 the exact same week that I got rather loaded with stuff from the
 RL-side and not after some reasonable time after the packages where
 first uploaded, which was the time when I had plently of time to fix
 any trouble arising from the repackaging in a speedy manner.

Bug#299602: error from cron job after Sarge upgrade

For what it's worth: I can't replicate this. I ran r2e in my sarge
qemu image, with the version 1:2.54-1 mentioned in the bug report,
against the lwn.net feed, and there was no problem.

I have had a couple of instances of the same in January, but they were
temporary problems and were fixed by the next time r2e ran from my
crontab. I suspect it may be that rss2email barfs on bad rss, but
since the feeds have been fixed by the time I look at them, I haven't
been able to debug it.

Lorenzo, does this happen every time for you, or only that one time?
If it happens every time, then I think some further information on
how to reproduce it would be good. If it only happened that one time,
I think we can lower the severity of the bug report.

The next time it happens (for me or any other user), immediately
downloading a copy of the rss feed in question to a file and sending
it as an attachment to this bug report would probably be wise.

Ok, thanks a lot for the info. Internet access in India is a bit spotty
at the moment, because of union troubles, at the telcos. I hope to get
the upstream developers to confirm whether the gnu.org wordlist is
identical to the original, in a couple of days. If any emergency
situation arises, then feel free to do an NMU, with the gnu.org
wordlist.

Thanks for considering.
Mmmh, must be due to a gnome libraries upgrade. Letting the

Bug#300775: Pam: newer upstream version (0.78) available fixing security bugs

2005-03-21 Thread Javier Fernández-Sanguino Peña
Package: libpam-runtime
Version: 0.76-22
Priority: serious
Tags: security

It seems we are missing some of upstream releases (0.77 was released in
September 2002 and 0.78 was released in November 2004). Please package this
new release:
ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/libs/pam/pre/library/

The 0.78 release includes two important security bugs as well as some of
the patches from Debian and other releases. The relevant security bugs are:

- Severe denial of service possible in pam_unix
- Pam_wheel with the trust module can be spoofed

Some other fixes in the PAM modules might be security-related, see below.

The full changelog entries are:

0.78: Do Nov 18 14:48:36 CET 2004

* pam_unix: change the order of trying password changes - local first,
  NIS second (t8m)
* pam_wheel: add option only_root to make it affect authentication
  to root account only
* pam_unix: test return values on renaming files and report error to
  syslog and to user
* pam_unix: forced password change shouldn't trump account expiration
* pam_unix: remove the use of openlog (from debian - toady)
* pam_unix: NIS cleanup (patch from Philippe Troin)
* pam_access: you can now authenticate an explicit user on an explicit
  tty (from debian - toady)
* pam_limits, pam_rhosts, pam_unix: fixed hurd portability issues
  (patch from Igor Khavkine)
* pam_env: added comments in the configuration file to avoid errors
  (from debian - toady)
* pam_mail: check PAM_NO_ENV to know if we can delete the environment
  variable (from debian - toady)
* pam_filter: s/termio/termios/g (from debian - toady)
* pam_mkhomedir: no maxpathlen required (from debian - toady)
* pam_limits: applied patch to allow explicit limits for root
  and remove limits on su. (from debian - toady)
* pam_unix: severe denial of service possible with this module since
  it locked too aggressively. Bug report and testing help from Sascha
  Loetz. (Bug 664290 - agmorgan)
* getlogin was spoofable: "/tmp/" and "/dev/" have the same number of
  characters, so 'ln /dev/tty /tmp/tty1 ; bash < /tmp/tty1 ; logname'
  attacks could potentially spoof pam_wheel with the 'trust' module
  argument into granting access to a luser. Also, pam_unix gave
  odd error messages in such a situation (logname != uid). This
  problem was found by David Endler of iDefense.com (Bug 667584 -
  agmorgan).
* added my new DSA public key to the pgp.keys.asc file. Also included
  a signed copy of my new public key (1024D/D41A6DF2) made with my old
  key (1024/2A398175).
* added "include" directive to config file syntax.
  The whole idea is to create few "systemwide" pam configs and include
  parts of them in application pam configs.
  (patch by "Dmitry V. Levin" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>) (Bug 812567 - baggins).
* doc/modules/pam_mkhomedir.sgml: Remove wrong debug options
  (Bug 591605 - kukuk)
* pam_unix: Call password checking helper whenever the password field
  contains only one character (Bug 1027903 - kukuk)
* libpam/pam_start.c: All service names should be files below /etc/pam.d
  and nothing else. Forbid paths. (Bug 1027912 - kukuk)
* pam_cracklib: Fix error in distance algorithm in the 0.9 pam_cracklib
  module (Bug 1010142 - toady)
* pam_userdb: applied patch from Paul Walmsley <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
  it now indicates whether encrypted or plaintext passwords are stored
  in the database needed for pam_userdb (BerliOS - toady)
* pam_group: The module should also ignore PAM_REINITIALIZE_CRED to
  avoid spurious errors (from Linux distributors - kukuk)
* pam_cracklib: Clear the entire options structure (from Linux
  distributors - kukuk)
* pam_issue: We write a NUL to prompt_tmp[tot_size] later, so make sure
  that the destination is part of the allocated block, make do_prompt
  static (from Linux distributors - kukuk)
* ldconfig: Only run full ldconfig, if we don't install into a FAKEROOT
  environment, else let ldconfig only create the symlinks correct
  (from Linux distributors - kukuk)
* pam_unix/pam_pwdb: Use SIG_DFL instead of SIG_IGN for SIGCHLD
  (from Linux distributors - kukuk)
* Add most of Steve Grubb's resource leak and other fixes (from
  Linux distributors - kukuk)
* doc/Makefile: Don't include .cvsignore files in tar ball (kukuk)
* libpam_misc/misc_conv.c: Differentiate between Ctrl-D and
   (Bug 1032604 - kukuk)
* Make.Rules.in: Add targets for installing man pages for modules
  (from Linux distributors - kukuk)
* Add pam_xauth module (Bug 436440 - kukuk)
* Add pam_localuser module (Bug 436444 - kukuk)
* Add pam_succeed_if module (from Linux distributors - kukuk)
* configure.in: Fix check for libcrypt (Bug 417704 - kukuk)
* Add the "broken_shadow" argument to pam_unix, for ignoring errors
  reading shadow information (from Linux distributors - kukuk)
* Add patches to make PAM modules reentrant (Bug 440107 - kukuk)
* Merge patches from Red Hat (Bug 477000 and other - kukuk)
* Fix pam_rhosts option parsing (Bug 922648 - kukuk)
* Add $ISA support in config files (from Red Hat - kukuk)

Many thanks for reporting this. Especially that it depends on the locale.
This will probably explain why I wasn't able to reproduce #299500.
Mathieu, can you confirm that lincvs starts fine for you as well if you

I can reproduce the error here and will forward this to upstream.

Bug#300764: missing depends (at least) on tetex-bin breaks install/removal and hoses buildds

2005-03-21 Thread Roland Stigge
Hi James,

thanks for reporting.

pmx already Depends on tetex-bin, so I don't know why this:

On Mon, 2005-03-21 at 17:40 +, James Troup wrote:
> | Setting up pmx (2.5.4-1) ...
> | /var/lib/dpkg/info/pmx.postinst: line 13: /usr/bin/kpsewhich: No such file
> or directory

could happen (with pbuilder, everything went fine; but I don't wanna
be ridiculous ;)), considering the definition of Depends (depended-on
packages are configured before the depending package).

I fear that adding tetex-bin to Depends to the other two wouldn't
improve the situation.

Any idea?

Thanks in advance!

bye,

Bug#300683: Package Fails to build from Source in a sane way

I'm a little puzzled. The package 'oprofile-source' does build
from source using dpkg-buildpackage. I just now built a brand new
sid chroot for i386, and ran 'dpkg-buildpackage' without a problem
(after adding build-essential and the build-deps).

Perhaps it is not clear from the description, but this package is
only supposed to provide the _source_ needed to build an oprofile
kernel module for 2.4.x kernels. It is not supposed to provide
the modules themselves. Hence, I build the module packages personally
and upload them as a convenience for using, using the source provided
in 'oprofile-source.' Is it this module building part that you're
suggesting I automate? If it is, that's fine -- I just want to make
sure I understand what part is unacceptable.

If there's a better way to do this, let me know. This is the method
that my AM and I settled on when I applied to become a DD. The
problem is that the oprofile module was not accepted into the upstream
Linux kernel source until 2.6.

Note that this is not an issue for 2.6.x kernels where the kernel
image packages contain an oprofile module by default.

Bug#300780: File conflict with liblucene-java-doc on unpacking

2005-03-21 Thread debian
Package: liblucene-java
Version: 1.4.3-3
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 7.5.1

Upon upgrading all installed packages, installation halted with the
unpacking of the new version of liblucene-java because one of the files
in the new version conflicted with a file in the old version of
liblucene-java-doc. When I ran the upgrade command again, it ran to
completion.

It seems like this should simply require the appropriate versioned

It happened for a while (some days) so I disabled rss2email. Now I've
restarted it, and it works.
For what I know, nothing changed in his configs.

Bug#300113: Bug#297137 / Bug#300113: bash 2.05-0beta1 not recent enough

2005-03-21 Thread Jan Echternach
The version of bash that failed for me in Bug#297137 was 2.05a-11.
The version in the Depends field in hotplug-0.0.20040329-20 is 2.05-0beta1
which is OLDER than 2.05a-11. The comment in Bug#300113 speaks of version
2.05b-beta1 which doesn't exist. The changelog entry for version 2.05b-1
suggests that this is the version that has the 'unset' bug fixed, and
2.05b-1 is newer than 2.05a-11.

Sorry, the patch was wrong, now it is fixed, so it is my second try.

The patch only works with cdbs >=0.4.27-3, since there was changes
around config.{guess,sub} handling, but it will migrate to testing
tonight. So we will have it tomorrow in testing too!

I'm planning to upload Aspell 0.60 Real Soon Now. Since the binary
format of the dictionaries has changed in 0.60, this dictionary must be
rebuilt. The general approach to transition a dictionary is:

* Use the Aspell packages available at
  http://people.debian.org/~pyro/pending/

* Build-depend on aspell (>> 0.60)

* Change "Provides: aspell-dictionary" to "Provides: aspell6-dictionary"

* Note that the dictionary files previously located in /usr/share/aspell
  and /usr/lib/aspell are now all located in /usr/lib/aspell-0.60, and
  adjust the package accordingly.

I'm currently building a staging area to make the transition as smooth
as possible. Please contact me once you've prepared the new package and
I'll add it to the staging area. I plan to make the aspell 0.60 upload
in a couple days (tentatively sometime Monday). If you have not
prepared a package by then, I'll elevate this bug to RC and NMU shortly
thereafter.

Yes, the problem is this second part, which results in binary packages in
the archive that are not built as a result of ./debian/rules binary. This
is non-standard, and in particular complicates the matter of security
support post-release.

If these are merely convenience packages that nothing depends on, it may be
best to remove them from the archive and just ship the oprofile-source
package. If so, please reassign this bug to ftp.debian.org.

Bug#300703: autofs: Upgrade fails

2005-03-21 Thread Adam Conrad
If you want to solve this bug once and for all, just replace "--exec
$DAEMON" in your stop target with "--name automount" instead. This way,
it will match pidfile and process name, which is about as reliable for
getting the "right process", but won't fail on inode removal.

I'm making this change to the Ubuntu packages for now (as we're on an
older version without the attempted upgrade magic), but you could save
yourself a lot of headaches if you do the same in the Debian package, and
scrap a bunch of the other magic used to work around the disappearing
inode.

My fault; I had openjade1.3 installed in the build env on this sponsored
upload, and gtk-doc does not build-conflict with openjade1.3 which provides
an alternative for /usr/bin/openjade.

The attached patch adds the missing build-conflict. Loïc, given the impact
of this (and the previous) bug, I'm going to go ahead and fix my botched
sponsor upload with an NMU; catch me on IRC or by mail if you have any
concerns with this.

I understand that from a maintainer's point of view, in many cases the
bugs we were targetting at the BSP were 5 days old, it is impossible
for me to acertain at this late of date why bglibs was identified as a
target when it was only a couple days old.

However, from the release manager's point of view, the current policy
is that 0-day NMUs to fix RC bugs are allowed and encouraged until
release. Every day the release manager is deciding not to allow
certain packages into testing because of RC bugs, so the quicker that
these bugs are dealt with, the better. If we waited for every
maintainer to get around to fixing their RC bugs, then there would
never be a release.

So, I agree with you -- this should'nt have been a target, although it
would have been a couple days later, but this is only a special case
scenario due to the ramp-up towards freeze for release.

To the best of my knowledge, the bug report did represent a genuine
bug, and as I have indicated a number of times, I apologize for being
wrong about that.

You can replace the package source with another upload, replacing the
NMU with the new one.

I asked during the BSP if a delay queue was protocol and was told that
normally yes this is the procedure, but right now this is not.
Obviously this is the right way to do it and due to the improper
nature of the bug, this situation was incurred, and I apologize for
the problems it has caused.

Bug#300683: Package Fails to build from Source in a sane way

Okay, that makes sense.  Thanks.

> If these are merely convenience packages that nothing depends on, it may be

Hmmm. "Convenience" is an interesting term. Without a kernel module
produced from the source contained in 'oprofile-source', systems
with 2.[24].x kernels will not be able to run the user-space tools
in the package 'oprofile' (2.6 kernels will not have this problem).
However, because 'oprofile' cannot determine which kernel will be
in use when it is run, we decided not to force a "Depends:" on a
'kernel-oprofile-module' in the package so the user has greater
flexibility.

So, I need an opinion, I guess: is it reasonable to make the user
create their own kernel modules in those cases? If they are using
something like 'oprofile,' they had better know what they're doing,
so that's not unreasonable, but it might be inconvenient, and it
affects a (possibly large) subset of all possible users. If it's
not reasonable, I'll leave this bug as is and put together the proper
packaging to build all the various modules from source.

Bug#300816: Broken dependencies means interchange should not be in testing

2005-03-21 Thread Karl Schmidt
Package: interchange
Version: 5.2.0-2
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 3.5

The upstream author emphatically states that Interchange only works with
unthreaded Perl. I've run siege tests on the sample data base and confirmed
that interchange fails with multiple threads. The package states via debconfig
 that it requires unthreaded perl, yet there the dependency is for
 perl >= 5.6.0-16 which is threaded. This is really a broken dependency as no
 such package exists.

There are indications from the mailing list that interchange requires apache1
 (probably due to the threaded mod-perl issues). There is no dependency,
 suggests, recommends for < apache 2 yet a configuration script looks for an
 apache1 config file.

The original issue of unthreaded perl goes back almost 2 years (see bug 199718)

Compounding this issue is the fact that there are dependencies in the debian
core packages for the threaded perl package.

Given that to create a workable system in testing requires running apache1,
creating a second unthreaded perl and mod-perl, and extensive editing of the
main program to point at these non existent packages, interchange should not
be in testing, but only unstable at this time.

Bug#300780: Swatting a very visible bug - # 300780

2005-03-21 Thread Jeff Breidenbach
Now that I think about it, lucene-demo-1.4.3.jar has some very useful
programs. It's arguably in a better place now than before. How about
we leave it in the liblucene-java package, and follow the reporter's
suggestion?

"It seems like this should simply require the appropriate versioned
Conflicts/Replaces relationships to be declared."

This is just adding a dependency to make sure liblucene-java-doc <= 1.4.3-2 is
not installed at the same time as the current liblucene-java package. I think
that would solve the problem.

Cheers,
Jeff

Too many unknown commands, stopping here.

Bug#300765: r-doc-html: Documents have nothing to do in /usr/lib

1) R is a rather large system -- the upstream sources come in at around 10.6
mb for the compressed 2.0.1 release, and 12.4 for the current sources of
the upcoming 2.1.0 release. R is also fairly popular and used by
thousands of people across many different operating systems.

2) On all platforms, R installs all its files below a given directory.
On Unix systems this defaults to /usr/local/lib/R. On Debian, we
use /usr/lib/R for the obvious reasons. It is similar for OS X etc pp.

3) The R Core development team is aware of the issue; I had privately raised
this before. Linux is used as a development platform by a large number
of the R Core developers (and yes, some even use Debian). They know about
the FHS.

4) As I said above, this is a large codebase and satisfying the FHS is a
nice goal in and by itself. Unfortunately, it is without any upside for
the other platforms. Still. I presume that a well-designed patch would
find the consideration of the R developers. But someone needs to write
and test the patch. So far, other priorities were more important. If
you care deeply about this, consider submitting a patch.

5) This is an upstream issue. I do suggest we close it here, and I invite
you to raise and file the issue in the upstream bug archive at
http://bugs.r-project.org

6) I disagree with your assessment of the bug severity.

Dirk

Just for the record, I rejected all oprofile-source-built kernel module
packages from NEW, so if it stays this way, and the -source package is
useful as is (without those module packages uploaded into the archive),
it's fine as far as I'm concerned.

If you want them in the archive though, yeah, you need to fix the build
system.
