Boot hangs with 16M ram
My debian box doesn't seem to be able to boot with 16 megs ram!! Dos and windows works fine, but Linux just hangs after it does partition check. I boot with lilo, using both kernels 2.0.17 18. The basic Debian boot disks crash when mounting the ramdisk, dumping register values and informing me of a protection fault. Help!!
Re: Booting problems
From: David C. Winters [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'm running into a problem with one, lone Linux box right now. After the BIOS bootstraps, the drive and CD-ROM and recognized, and the 3.5 floppy is seen, instead of saying LILO as a preface to LILO's booting into Linux, the following comes up: xFA: On Sun, 25 Aug 1996, Bruce Perens wrote: This is from Debian's master boot record. Press 2 to boot partition 2, 'F' to boot the floppy, etc. I suggest you re-install the LILO package and say no to the first question (which asks if you want to use the existing LILO configuration) and yes to all subsequent questions. (It took me a while to put out some fires, now I'm back to this...) I reinstalled LILO, according to these directions. Either the partition is not bootable for some reason, or you have a shift key down when the system boots. Otherwise you would not see this. Pressing F at the 2FA: prompt does boot it from the floppy, but pressing 2 does not boot it off of /dev/hda2. I checked the partitioning using both cfdisk and fdisk--both agree that /dev/hda2 is active. I'm beginning to wonder if something's scrambled in the MBR at the physical layer. Re: how to sign up to debian-devel?
Hm, I also tried to subscribe mailing to the listserver. I did this because of the following text in http://www.debian.org/1.1/release.html To subscribe to the mailing lists, send the word subscribe to one of these addresses: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I also didn't receive an answer. Then i tried filling in the form http://www.rahul.net/perens/Debian/MailingLists.html. This worked fine. There's a link from www.debian.org to this page. I did use that form to sign up to all the other debian mailing lists, but it doesn't have an entry for the debian-devel list (I guess bacause it's a closed list..) Re: Debian (not Linux) newbie
I can't help you there. While I use (and maintain) tob and afio, I never use muti-volume backups as I do them off-line anyway. I just define my backup volumes such that they will fit on one 170 MB tape. That holds /etc, /home and /usr/local, which is all I need. -- Dirk Eddelbuttel http://qed.econ.queensu.ca/~edd
Re: Base system installation
The unresolved symbols messages are harmless (unless you want to use nfs or the de4x5, in which case you end up rebuilding the kernel). 20 minutes, huh? You did create and activate your swap partition, didn't you? You can consider your installation successful. Bruce

@SUBJECT:Debian (not Linux) newbie question #2 N Hi again all... Question #2 of problems getting Debian install. I tried a test install of Pacific Hi-Tech's Debian 1.1.1 CD-ROM on another hard drive (not the one I'm trying to backup) on Friday. All went okay until I got to the part about making a boot floppy. When prompted I stuck a blank floppy in drive a:. The installation program churned out a bunch of 'probing for floppy0' messages and eventually died with 'can't find device' error. I figured it was a bad floppy, so I stuck in another. Same result. Stuck in a third disk. Same thing again. I finally booted Red Hat and just copied over my 2.0.17 kernel to a floppy, ran rdev to set / properly. When I rebooted with the floppy Debian came up. My question is, am I doing something wrong with the Debian installation or is there a bug in 1.1.1? Debian looks like an interesting Linux distribution to play with--as soon as I get things properly backed up and installed. :-) Thanks in advance for any help y'all can offer. Debian (not Linux) newbie
@SUBJECT:Debian (not Linux) newbie question #1 N Hi all, I've been running Linux for almost a year now. I started with Slackware, moved to Red Hat 3.0.3 now I want to move to Debian. I will be moving Red Hat to another machine once I get Debian configured the way I want. I am having two problems getting things set up. One is related to Debian, the other is more Linux in general but I hope someone can get me pointed in the proper direction. First problem is about the backup utilities tob and taper. Up until recently, I have been able to backup my hard drives to tape (floppy tape drive using zftape v1.05) using a single 200 MB (uncompressed) tape. The drive is 1.6 GB and until recently it has not been too full. However, I have now reached the point where I need more than one tape and this is where my trouble started. When I use tob and get to the end of the first tape, afio doesn't prompt for another tape. All it is does it print a 'tape full' error for every remaining file. In /etc/tob.rc, I have the BACKUPCMD set to: BACKUPCMD='afio -oxZv -b 10240 -s0 -T 3k -G 9 $BACKUPDEV $FILELIST' The -b 10240 was necessary because without it afio complains about a bad block size while writing to the tape. If I understand the man page for afio, -s0 should make afio pause when a tape fills. It doesn't. With -s0, afio behavior is the same. It keeps trying writing to the full tape. I tried using using taper (with zftape). When the tape fills up, taper chokes with a child segmentation error in a dialog box. If I click on the 'OK', taper just hangs. When I didn't fill the tape, taper would work just fine. I've seen folks mention on the list use both tob and taper with success, so I must be doing something wrong. Can someone give me a clue to what it is? :-) Thanks! Bob ... * ATP/Linux 1.42 * Linux, the choice of a GNU generation.

Re: char-major-10
Hi, Sep 9 03:53:44 sim modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-10 You are running kerneld. You go to open a character device with major number 10. There is no driver for the device and kerneld tries to load it. char-major-10 is handled by the drivers/char/misc.o (which will be installed in the kernel if: #if defined (CONFIG_BUSMOUSE) || defined(CONFIG_UMISC) || \ defined (CONFIG_PSMOUSE) || defined (CONFIG_MS_BUSMOUSE) || \ defined (CONFIG_ATIXL_BUSMOUSE) || defined(CONFIG_SOFT_WATCHDOG) || \ defined (CONFIG_PCWATCHDOG) || \ defined (CONFIG_APM) || defined (CONFIG_RTC) || defined (CONFIG_SUN_MOUSE) ). If none of those options are installed into the kernel, and it will be compiled as a module if one of the above options are build as modules. Therefore there is one alias needed: alias char-major-10 misc Each single device with major 10 will be requested from kerneld with: char-major-10-%d, therefore the following aliases are needed in addition: alias char-major-10-0 busmouse alias char-major-10-1 psaux alias char-major-10-2 msbusmouse alias char-major-10-4 amigamouse alias char-major-10-5 atarimouse alias char-major-10-6 ? alias char-major-10-130 wdt (or softdog) alias char-major-10-131 wdt alias char-major-10-134 apm_bios alias char-major-10-135 rtc (this is what i read from the source, it is neighter complete nor i am sure if it is correct). Debian 1.1.8 and two ethercards ?
As I'm mirroring the Debian site, the system is upgraded if I install something new which happens quite frequently as the systems are new and the required software base has quite not stabilzed yet. However, it seems like something has happened in the last fixes or so as my second ethernet device is not functioning anymore. It worked a week ago, with about 1.1.6 or so. As I need to run some firewalling code I have compiled my own kernel on the v2.0.6 release. The symptons are that the 10Mbit ether-device (the main device is a HP100Mbit) will get a arp address of zero: mpc7 arp -a Address HWtype HWaddress Flags Mask Iface gandalf.uccs.eduether 08:00:09:7A:A3:90 C *eth0 mpc4.uccs.edu ether 00:00:00:00:00:00 *eth1 ~ The mpc4 computer has not been touched at all, it has worked in the same setup for at least two months now. It also gets ar 00:00 arp entry of the mpc7 computer. On another computer the eth0 device is the 10Mbit device, and the same thing happens, so its not connected to the device number. V2.0.x kernel stability
I am trying to install the Debian 1.1 system and am having some serious stability problems. My apologies if this has been discussed on the list already, but I am fast running out of ideas and have not been able to find any hints in the list archives. The symptoms of the problem are that the system boots just fine, but after some (apparently random) period of time, every command starts dumping core with a segmentation fault. Just about the only thing that works after this is a 'sync' or two and a hard reset. I have tried compiling the kernel (2.0.6 and 2.0.18) with no luck. I checked out the SIG 11 FAQ and following a suggestion there, re-compiled GCC and then rebuilt the kernel with that. Still no joy. The PC is an antique 386 that has been running Linux for over 3 years and Debian 0.93 with a version 1.2.13 kernel for most of the last year without *any* problems. I am seeing the problems while trying to update it using a recent base system and the 96-07-14 boot disk series (version 2.0.0 kernel). If anyone has any light to shed on the problem, I would be most grateful for any suggestions. I am happy to provide more specific information on the system if required Please reply directly to me as I am not subscribed to the list at the moment and I will post a summary back to the list if there is anyone else having similar problems. Thanks in advance. David Gray.

However, I want to use an application -- GENESIS http://www.bbb.caltech.edu/GENESIS/ which actually crashes when using ncurses. It gets a segmentation fault in tgetent(). The program works fine under several other UNIXs, on other Linux distributions and even works when linked against libtermcap.a (by using the aout development package). I have been reluctant to report it as a bug because: a) I can't reproduce the problem with a simple test program, b) I know nothing about terminal programming and c) I can't answer questions about the GENESIS source. I have been corresponding with GENESIS support but I think it is unfair to ask them to fix what appears to be a bug in ncurses termcap compatibility. On the other hand I doubt the program is of sufficent general interest to warrant a special Debian version/package. The point I am trying to make is that it may be necassary to support two terminal packages, at least for the time being. Thanks Evan. PS. cfdisk not working with 486/DTC
I am trying to install Debian Linux 1.1 on my 486/80, 12meg RAM, 1.3gig SCSI HD, DTC3280 SCSI controller. After booting off my boot (Linux kernal 2.0.0) and root floppies and getting to the cfdisk 0.8d BETA, I run into problems. I try setting up some partitions and Write the table, it complains about sda: unknown partition table. If I leave cfdisk and re-enter, it generally complains about FATAL ERROR: Bad primary partition and kicks me out of cfdisk. My only recourse is to boot up DOS and wipe out sector 0 of the hard drive using Norton Utilities or similar. Fortunately, I had my hard drive backed up. Apparently, cfdisk is not writing the partition table properly. I have tried it with my 1.3gig HD (Hitachi DK516C-16) and also tried it with my iomega Zip drive with the same results. This is the same setup I used for DOS/Windows with no problems. Any ideas? David Godshall, [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Mailing list changes coming
Dear Readers, A while back the U.S. Congress passed some ill-considered anti-obscentity legislation that forced me to move the Debian mailing lists out of the U.S. for my own protection. At that time, Anders Chrigstrom of NetGuide in Sweden graciously offered to operate the lists for us. Of late, Anders is under a lot of time pressure and has not been able to answer any of our messages. Fortunately, the U.S. courts overturned the obscentity legislation and it is safe for us to operate the lists from the U.S. again, for now. Over the next few days I will be moving the mailing list management to our internal system, where all 100 developers can access it. I will be soliciting other systems to provide the services of their mail delivery programs, so that the internal system isn't overloaded by delivering mail. At the same time I am putting in a full day at Pixar and am moving into a new home, so please be patient if it takes me a few days to get this done. Thanks Bruce Perens

If so, I'd appreciate a short note from you. I'd like to know if you use SLIP because PPP is unavailable, more expensive, or otherwise inconvenient. libg++-2.7.2.deb is old?
Hello, In order to test a local copy of buzz-fixed before burning it on a CD-ROM, we tried to run dpkg --root=... --unpack, just to see if the files aren't corrupted. We got some results we don't understand completly: 1. Most packages finished fine, they produced output like: (Reading database ... 3368 files and directories currently installed.) Preparing to replace CGI-modules (using .../devel/CGI-modules_2.75-3.deb) ... Unpacking replacement CGI-modules ... Selecting previously deselected package aout-binutils. Unpacking aout-binutils (from .../aout-binutils_2.5.2-11.deb) ... Selecting previously deselected package aout-gcc. Unpacking aout-gcc (from .../devel/aout-gcc_2.6.3-13.deb) ... and so on. So I assume it means I'm more-or-less on the right track. 2. some packages produced the following output: Selecting previously deselected package perl. Unpacking perl (from .../devel/perl_5.003-2.deb) ... dpkg (subprocess): unable to execute new pre-installation script: No such file or directory dpkg: error processing yigal/debian/buzz-fixed/binary-i386/devel/perl_5.0 03-2.deb (--unpack): subprocess pre-installation script returned error exit status 2 (I've cut a couple of lines to fit to the mail message). Notice that the system-level error is No such file or directory. When run without the --root option, it installs fine. In addition, libg++ in particular seems to be still in old .deb format (0.93). I've updated the dpkg I use to be 1.2.14elf, from buzz-fixed. Can anyone explain me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks, --Amos

While Windows 3.1x or Windows 95 is required to register a new account, other operating systems that support PPP with CHAP can be used once an account is registered. Unless you have already configured your Linux system to use PPP to another Internet Service Provider, connecting to Worldnet from Linux will take a little bit of work (recompiling the Linux kernel). I list here a few reasons why one might want to do this bit of work. If you have used PPP to connect to other ISP's from Linux, and pretty much know what you are doing try reading the Expert Notes below. The Instructions 1. If you have not already done so, activate your Worldnet account using the installation disks. 2. If you have already successfully installed and used PPP with other ISP's, skip to step 3. Get a copy of ppp-2.1.2d.tar if your kernel is version 1.2.x, or ppp-2.2.0e.tar for kernels = 1.3.x. 4. Follow the directions contained within the ppp package for rebuilding your kernel with PPP support and for installing pppd and chat. 5. Get a copy of the file WORLDNET\DIALER\REG.INI and use the settings in the scripts below. 6. Add the following line to the file /etc/ppp/chap-secrets 7. [EMAIL PROTECTED] * password * where 99 has been replace by number on the Name line of REG.INI and password is replaced the value on the Password line. The quotation marks around the password are important to protect special character that might appear in the password. 8. Create, the following script. I have given mine the name /usr/sbin/ppp-on. 9. #!/usr/bin/perl # # Script to establish connection to WorldNet via PPP. # # Look at WORLDNET\DIALER\REG.INI and ATT.SR to get the following settings # $DOMAIN=worldnet.att.net; # DomainName from ATT.SR $SEARCH=$DOMAIN; $NAMESERVER1=204.127.129.1;# DNS_ADDR from REG.INI $NAMESERVER2=204.127.129.2;# DNS_ADDR_2 $NAME=[EMAIL PROTECTED]; # LOGIN $PHONE=6213400; # Cambridge, MA# Phone from ATT.SR $MODEM=/dev/modem; $resolv = '/etc/resolv.conf'; open(CONF,$resolv)|| die Cannot open file: $resolv.\n $! \n; print CONF \#resolv.conf - created automatically by .$ARGV[0].\n; print CONF domain .$DOMAIN.\n; print CONF search .$SEARCH.\n; print CONF nameserver .$NAMESERVER1.\n; print CONF nameserver .$NAMESERVER2.\n; $command=/usr/sbin/pppd name \.$NAME.\. -d connect \'/usr/sbin/chat -t 45 -v ABORT BUSY \\ ATDT. $PHONE. Give the script a permission of 4755 (chmod 4755 /usr/sbin/ppp-on) if you want to be able to startup the Internet connection from accounts other than root. This script is a bit fancy in that it writes to the file /etc/resolv.conf the domain name and the nameserver numbers. This can be handy if you have several similar scripts for different ISP's, each of which has it's own domain name and nameservers. If perl is not available, or you want a simpler script, edit /etc/resolv.conf to contain domain worldnet.att.net nameserver 204.127.129.1 nameserver 204.127.129.2 and use the following the following script startup PPP (replacing the login name and phone number with appropriate values.) /usr/sbin/pppd name [EMAIL PROTECTED] -d connect \ '/usr/sbin/chat -t 45 -v ABORT BUSY ATDT111 CONNECT ' \ /dev/modem 57600 noipdefault modem defaultroute crtscts 10. Optionally, one may optionally add a script to disconnect ppp. The following is an example of /usr/sbin/ppp-off 11. #!/bin/sh # ppp-down - simply kills the ppp-daemon kill `ps -a | grep pppd | grep -v grep | cut -b 1-6` Mail and News The values of NNTP_HOST, SMTP_HOST, POP_SERVER, POP_PASSWORD, and EMAIL_ADDR can be extracted from WORLDNET\DIALER\REG.INI and used in whatever pop-mail and news software you choose. Babel installation fix?
Last week I tried to remove and then reinstall Babel3.6-4 and faced the same bug that someone wrote about last week (I had previously sent a bug report in to the bug-reports address). The error involved MakeTeXTeX filling the drive with the endless loop of trying to make a non-existent (that I can have yet to find) manfnt.mf (if I remembering correctly). dpkg now sees this package sitting there broken. it can't install it and it can't purge it because it always gets stuck in this loop. I haven't heard anything back about either the bug report or the message in this list. How can this be fixed? So far anything I've wanted to install has gone very smoothly. Do I have to completely remove TeX and then reinstall it? (ugh) or is there someway to get Babel to either get installed or purged (I really don't need it, but it won't hurt to have it there) I was content to just have it sit there broken while waiting for word from someone, but now I find that I can't use TeX or LaTeX because it thinks Babel is still there and functional. -- David Morris [EMAIL PROTECTED] --- The fundamental question in life is whether we live it from the outside in or from the inside out. - Fritz Perls (founder, Gestalt therapy) --- Home Page: http://www.netins.net/showcase/dmorris/ ---

Alternatively you can install all the packages in /debian/buzz-updates/binary. The READMEs in the /debian, /debian/buzz, /debian/buzz-updates, and /debian/buzz-fixed explain all this. Guy

Install the base system on the disk before you unpack packages to it. The best way is to do it via floppies the way one would normally install a system, as everything will be configured properly. You might try to extract disks-i386/current/base1_1.tgz there instead, but that will not completely configure the system so some stuff might still break. The libg++ doesn't compile with the ELF libc. That's why it's in that state. I'm not sure what's happening with this - whether there is a maintainer working on it or if we're just going to wait for GNU LIBC 6. Watch out for dangling symbolic limks. It's best to test an install from your CD-writable pre-master using the dselect program. Re: Boot hangs with 16M ram
Help!! You probably have a hardware problem with the memory. I recently tried to add an extra 16MB to my system. It was EDO ram and worked fine under dos/windows, but not Linux. Linux places much higher stress on the memory subsystem.
