All packages Obsolete/local in dselect?

1999-05-20 Thread Pete Harlan
Hi,

All of my installed packages show up as Obsolete/local packages when
using dselect:

--- Obsolete/local Required packages in section base ---
*** Req base adduser 3.8 none
 *** Req base ae 962-21.1none
 *** Req base base-files 2.1.0 none
 *** Req base base-passwd 2.0.3.3 none
...

I've seen this before when switching to the 'apt' method in dselect,
and going back to 'ftp' has always solved it, but no more. I deleted
my /var/lib/dpkg/methods/ftp/ packages files and redownloaded them but
to no avail.

I'm running slink, upgraded from hamm. I've seen this happen with
'apt' on several machines, but only just saw it from 'ftp' too.

Any ideas how I would go about resolving this?

Thanks,

apt-get and two cds

1999-05-20 Thread Matt Garman

I downloaded and burned my own official Debian Slink 2.1 cds. There
are two binary cds.

I downloaded these while at school while I had an ultra-fast
connection so that I can use apt-get on the cdrom, rather over the
much slower (and costly) modem.

My question -- I have been successful installing packages that reside
on the first CD, but this does not work for packages on the second
CD. For example, the package cnews is stored on the second CD, but
if I try to do a apt-get install cnews, I get the following error:

E: Package cnews has no installation candidate

This is with cd 2 in the drive and mounted. So I figured that maybe I
have to run apt-get update with the second CD in the drive and
mounted (previously, I had ran apt-get update only on the first
CD). But when I run apt-get update on the second disc, I get this
error:

E: Line 2 in package file
/var/state/apt/lists/cdrom_debian_dists_slink_main_binary-i386_Packages
has no :.
E: Package file
/var/state/apt/lists/cdrom_debian_dists_slink_main_binary-i386_Packages
line 2 does not start a package

Any ideas?

Thanks,
MG

Re: NIS and /etc/group

1999-05-20 Thread Jens B. Jorgensen
Take a look at /var/yp/Makefile on your NIS server. There's a variable in there:

MINGID=???

Which defines the group id below which entries will be ignored. The dialout
group is
20 and this is probably lower than the MINGID in /var/yp/Makefile. You can
change
MINGID and re-make or create a new group (above MINGID) and assign this group
to all
the dialout devices on all the machines.

Stephen A. Witt wrote:

I've just set up NIS on a small group of Debian machines with one NIS
server and the rest as clients. Everything seems to be working fine, with
one small exception. Most of the users need to be able to use minicom or
kermit to connect as a dumb terminal to some devices in our lab and so
I've added them to the 'dialout' group in /etc/group on the NIS server.
These changes aren't being propagated by the NIS server to the clients
however. I've tried a couple of different things in the /etc/group files
on the clients to fix this but haven't been successful yet. This is all on
 slink by the way.

The first configuration was with a group file on the client exactly as it
comes out of the box from a Debian install, with the addition of the
'*:::' as specified in 'nis.debian.howto.gz'. The only groups I see on any
 of the clients are :

 % ypcat group
 users:*:100:
 nogroup:*:65534:

I then tried 'group' with just '+:::' in it, nothing else, hoping that it
would pick up all the groups (including the default groups) from the
server, but it didn't change. I got the identical results as above.

So, do I have to edit all of the group files on the clients and add the
users to the dialout group? I hoped that NIS would take care of this for
 me.

 Thanks...

Yes. I wanted to be able to compile and test a kernel on a remote Linux
server, so I had to be able to use Lilo in case the fresh kernel
 couldn't boot the machine.

Wow, what a great piece of information, thanks!

My needs are more modest; eventually I want to copy some files off of a SCO
unix box to see if a certain package will run under Linux (the Progress
database language). To this end I have minicom installed on an old machine
currently running OpenBSD; I will drag this box to where the SCO is and hook
up the null modem cable.

I'm testing this setup now by logging on to my slink-grade Debian system with
this obsd install of minicom (the 'dumb terminal') and running sz on the
Debian to send files to the obsd. Right now I'm having trouble with sz. It
downloads files from the Debian to the obsd ok, but it hangs after the
transfer, leaving a '**B00' sitting at the cursor.

Thoughts, anyone?

Equivs and Mail problem

1999-05-20 Thread Damon Muller
Hi Folks,

I wanted to get rid of exim install qmail. I didn't want to use the
qmail src deb, because it's only 1.02, so I got the source and compiled
it myself.

Now, obviously a lot of things are going to complain loudly if I get rid
of my MTA, so acting on something I saw on the list, I used the equivs
package to provide an equiv for mail-transport-agent.

I think I did the quivs correctly. In /etc/equivs.conf I have:

$ cat /etc/equivs.conf
mail-transport-agent

I installed the resulting deb file. When I have a look at the deb file
in mc it says Provides: mail-transport-agent.

I uninstalled --force-deps exim and installed the equivs deb. It all
seemed to work nicely.

Yet when I recently ran apt-get update, this is what I got:

RE: Separate list for newbies

1999-05-20 Thread Matt Kokidko
I COMPLETELY agree. I am a total newbie, but I fortunately know a friend who
has used linux since he was five(many years) and gives me lots of help. Also,
I have posted several questions here and have found an overwhelming desire to
help, whereas in most newsgoups one would be flamed. Thanks to those who take
the time to help. It makes linux a much more desirable environment than other
OS's which charge per call for assistance.

A thought for all who are contemplating a special list for newbies. The
more eyes that see a question, the better your chances are for a correct
solution.

Many of the gurus that answer your questions do not come to this list
to simply help out. I'm sure some do, but many (me included) are looking
for answers to questions that they have. In the process of scanning the
list they see things that they KNOW how to fix and say to themselves
well, it will only take a minute to help here, so why not! I appreciate
the help available from everyone here and hope it will always be
available in such a timely and easy to access format. I also want to
point out that most questions can be answered by simply checking the
/usr/docs directory on your own system. The problem with that is simple,
you may be too new to know where to look in the docs. That is where the
experienced users can help. Most of the time they simply tell you where
to find your own answers. Believe me that is the best way, as you learn
more. Eventually you will find that you tend to answer more questions
than you ask, then you are no longer a newbie!
I have been enjoying the development of free open source software since
1992 and hope all of you develop a level of experience that will allow
you to also help others do the same. I also can tell you that once I
have a VREY reliable, Linux, banking package I will remove the 1
remaining Microsoft OS that I have installed. That is becaus I have ALL
my needs met via free software.

1999-05-20 Thread Martin Bialasinski

DM == Damon Muller [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

DM Why am I getting all those unresolved dependencies? I thought that
DM was what equivs was for?

The version in slink does not work well with apt. You installed a new
equivs package with different dependencies, but there is a equivs with
the same version on the ftp mirrors, so apt doesn't take the info from
the local package, but from the one on the mirror, so it doesn't see
the changed dependencies.

The best way to solve this is to install the equivs package available
in unstable. It will build truly new packages, so the config scheme is
different to the one in stable, but also more flexible. Check
README.Debian and the examples in the subdirectory.

I am not running Sendmail, just Exim and fetchmail, but I use POP3 and not

Yoi just need to comment out the Exit 0 part and of course, comment out Exim

Sounds like this is exactly the case.

  1. So, what's cfengine and how do I know if I need it? The doc in the
/usr/doc directory is huge and obscure -- could anyone be so kind as
to describe in a couple of words what it does?

Reads a config file and does as directed, synchronizing user lists,
passwords, or whatever you tell it.

=== From the package description (inside dselect select ===
cfengine - Tool for configuring and maintaining network machines

The main purpose of cfengine is to allow the system administrator to
create a single central file which will define how every host on a
network should be configured.

cfengine is also useful as an interpreter for a general scripting
language for ordinary users. It is handy for tidying up junk files and
for maintaining `watchdog' scripts to manage access rights and permissions
on files when collaborating with other users.

It takes a while to set up cfengine for a network (especially an already
existing network), but once that is done you will wonder how you ever
lived without it!
  === End package description ===

If you don't know what it is, and don't run a LAN, you probably don't
*need* it (although it's possible you could find some use for it.)

Purging it will most likely cause no problems. (Do you have any idea
how it got installed?)

Languages currently accepted are us english and egnlish english, or

Why do I need to download the install guide again, and why am I
not sure about my settings in win? Let's not go there- I had some
really bad stuff happen today. I ended up having to reload win95 from
scratch, and I nop longer have the debian distro.

So, I need to download and install from the windows disk (Windows
doesn't see my linux disk). Of course, to do this, I need the install
guide

Is there a problem with the server? Could I get it via email?

I see that you have the cdrom as id 2 and the disk as id 6. If you
intend to boot from that hard disk you should set it's id to 0 (unless
your scsi adapter has a configurable boot device, which on cheaper
cards it couldn't be the case...).

Also check that:

1) the hard disk is on the first connector next to the adapter card.
(this really is not required but eliminates some error possibilities
because that's the way it works for me :-)

2) the cdrom is on the last connector on the strip. This is
important. If your strip has more than 2 connectors, the LAST ONE
must be occupied, possibly leaving some empty ones in the
middle. The empty ones in the middle don't hurt.

3) The hard disk MUST NOT be terminated (there's a little series of
jumpers on the hd, check for the one that has a mark as TE or
TERM - better yet, check on the instruction manual that I hope
   your dealer gave you)

4) THe cdrom MUST BE terminated (again, a small jumper on the back of
the device, better if you check the manual because usually there
are 6 or 7 jumpers all together and it may be confusing figuring
   out the right one)

5) Check that both devices support parity check (there are jumpers for
this too), and that parity is set up to be used in the adapter's set-up

6) Set adapter's speed to auto-sense so that you don't have to mess
with 20 MB/s or fast buses or the like :-)

Any advice, RTFM pointers, or tips would be appreciated. I'm guessing
I
don't have the devices set up properly, but perusing docs and howtos
didn't
turn up anything. Thanks in advance.

Hope this is enough :-)

Pf

Um... What browser are you using to get to it? Their site is lynx-hostile,
AND uses javascript. w3-el running on xemacs20 can't handle the
javascript, chimera2 has been loading the page for about five minutes so
far and has displayed two very small scrollbars. Arena is indicating
StarDivision has bad HTML on their page, which is saying it doesn't
support frames, and doesn't even show the frame info as lynx does.

Don't tell me you're using a non-free browser? :)

I am trying to re-use some old PS/2s that have become available. I am
trying to install slink on them. As the PS/2 does not have a CD I
need to do the initial installation from floppies.

Have you tried just booting with the 2.1 rescue's default kernel?

Yes, No go.
I replaced the kernel with one compiled for ESDI / MCA.
Goes further. It seems to talk to the disk controller, but I cannot
interpret the error messages to decide if they are genuine errors.
The installation still does not see the hard disk and offer fdisk.

I can switch consoles. There were no /dev/eda devices. I created
these, but still the installation would not recognise the disk.

gdm/xdm/login.app weirdnesses

1999-05-20 Thread solomon
I'm running potato and till recently was running XDM with login.app to
give the login screen a nice clean look. Then GDM (Gnome Display
Manager) showed up in unstable so i grabbed it. Next time i rebooted,
it gave me the gnome login screen and my mouse works, but for some odd
reason it disables my keyboard. The kb works through bootup but once
it goes to the gdm login screen my led lights won't even come on off.
The only possible thing i can think of that i might have done was put
login.app into the wrong runlevel or something...when i initially
installed login.app it tried to configure before X and XDM were
configured so it told me to configure later with some config script
somewhere. When it ran, it asked me which runlevel to put login.app
into. I know nothing about runlevels, and was given the options 2345
 ...i chose 2. When i decided to install GDM i removed login.app
fearing problems; when i removed it, it spit some things out about the
runlevel stuff. I don't remember what this said nor do i have any
idea what it meant. Anyway, i simply went in with a boot disk,
renamed gdm within init.d to prevent it from booting, and then removed
GDM, Login.app, and XDM altogether within dselect. This has thusfar
solved my problem; however, i sure would like to be able to have some
freedom in choosing xdm, login.app, and gdm without worrying about
this. Is it simply a bug in GDM? I suppose i'll see...

Netelligent, still problems

unfortunately, I still can't get this netelligent card working. I installed the

/lib/modules/2.0.34/net/ directory). But on issuing the command
insmod tlan
nothing happens afterwards (also error messages). No network.
The command

ifconfig eth0

results in

eth0 unknown interface

I'm not an expert at all (You probaly recognized it :-)).
What to do???

I also tried to use a 3c509 card, which used to work in another Linux-PC (Compaq

I got
device or resource busy.

Is there something special which has to be setup in the Compaq-Setup/BIOS

Thanks a lot for any help!

exim mailer/dhis.org/debian mailing list question

1999-05-20 Thread solomon
Howdy all. I'm running potato with exim mailer and i am using the
dhis.org dynamic dns service (there happens to be a nice dhis.org client
in unstable, though it would be easy enough to compile it or get
binaries...); it is set up so that mail sent to me while i'm offline is
held by dhis.org and then spooled to me when i come back online. I
have a few debian lists set up to go into seperate folders and all,
which is spiffy. My problem, however, is that when my mail is spooled
to me, the date time are for when i received the messages from
dhis.org, not when they were sent to dhis.org. This presents a problem
when TKRat and TKMail (i use both) try sorting them by date and
grouping subjects together; they don't necessarily show up in the order
of the thread. So, i'm trying to figure out how to get exim, when it
receives the spool and delivers the message, to stamp the message with
the correct date. Any idears?

try sending a mail message to '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' from any other mailer. If
this bounces, then what you need to do is enable relaying for localhost.
I assume you are using exim (it's the default now); for some strange reason,
the configuration script does not enable realying from 127.0.0.1, which breaks
a lot of things. I always have to go in and edit the exim.conf manually,
although lately I have just begun to install smail instead.

Someone else will need to tell you the syntax for the exim.conf line;
I don't remember it and don't have a working copy available.

Problems compiling gtk+ applications.

1999-05-20 Thread Blouze
My name's Blaise, coming out of Paris France.
I'm trying to compile and install gtk+ applications with an update of
the gtk library.
I complete the installation of new glib and new gtk+ lib.
I heard that gtk lib is in fact composed of glib, gtk and imlib.
So, I have a new glib and a new gtk on my /usr/local/lib directory, and
my old imlib from my Redhat 5.2 distribution on /usr/lib.
When I'm running the 'configure' file of the application I wanna
install, I first get an error message telling that it's not finding the
right path to the gtk library. It's a problem I went through exporting
LD_LIBRARY_PATH to the correct path. Then when I'm running again the
configure file, it says that the gtk has been found but that there's
another problem with imlib this time: it says that imlib was not
correctly installed or moved since installed. So I tried to uninstall
imlib and imlib-devel RPM and then install them back. But the same
problem is occuring.
I'm deeply down and out because I got a bunch of terrific gtk apps that
are waiting for gtk to get to work at last!

Thanx in advance.

Blouze.

Re: Re[2]: Separate list for newbies

1999-05-20 Thread Gilbert Laycock
As for the volume of the list my solution is simple: I archive in
gz files every single post to the list, and I have over a year's
worth of such archives. There's nothing new under the sun and
chances are I am not the first person to ask a question. This is
something simple anyone could do, unless they are on a system where
their disk space is severely curtailed, such as at a school,
etc. That's why the list is archived at debian.org.

The bottom line is: if a reasonable post to this goes completely
ignored that's a good indication that no one else knows the answer
  either!

Maybe this is just completely impractical (I've just been through the
dreaming up projects for next year's students process), but how
about:
A 'bot that scans all new posts to debian-user and automatically
does a search of the list archive (plus FAQ etc), based on the
subject and a scan of the body text for keywords, and then sends a
response listing links to the top 5 or so results. It would have to
be bright enough to filter out its own responses from future
 searches.

If these automatic answers are incorrect, out of date, etc,
somebody will quickly post better answers as followups, and next
time around, the system will favour these better answers.

This idea is based on little more than the vague impression that if I
were to systematically submit a suitably condensed version of each new
question to a list archive search engine, I would get pretty good and
useful set of responses.

Benefits:
For the genuine FAQ's the system would quickly home in on the
correct answer, and each such question would be quickly and
unobtrusively answered. Nobody else need bother responding, unless
they have new information rendering the standard response obsolete,
thus cutting down on repetitive noise.

For all questions, the first automatic response would be a quick
summary of previous threads on the subject.

Problems:
It might make the problem worse: after all it would be sending out
lots of extra messages to a list that is already busy.

The system might be no good at choosing suitable keywords for the
search, so the results are useless.

Nobody has the time to write such a system (I certainly don't) so it
 never gets done.

went from a 2.0.36 to a 2.2.5 kernel. I'm now using 2.2.9 and it's no
different. I don't think it was just the kernel tho, as I have also been
playing around with other things (like setting up IPMasq with ipchains)
on my system. I don't know exactly which change killed it.

The problem is as such:

$ sudo mount -o port=3049,intr localhost:/null /crypt
mount: RPC: Timed out

This has always worked for me before (it's in an /etc/init.d/cfsd
script), but now, no joy :(

Any suggestions as to where I might start looking would be appreciated!

wdm and xdm co-exisitng - is this a bug?

1999-05-20 Thread Damon Muller
Hi Folks,

I recently installed the kde 1.1.1 debs on my slink system. Only catch
was they required xdm being present, and I think wdm is much nicer (and
more useful) than xdm. But, I wanted to upgrade my kde, so I installed
xdm, and then went and installed kde.

Now, that was a while ago, but I had not rebooted since. Today I
downloaded the patches and upgraded my kernel to 2.2.9, and as a result,
I had to reboot. Unfortunately, my keyboard stopped working on reboot -
not even the good ol' 3-finger salute (ctl-alt-del) got any response,
nor did the caps or scroll lock lights - completely dead.

I tried rebooting my older kernels, but although the keyboard was
working in lilo, it would again die when it finished booting (ie., when
wdm started).

I eventually worked out that the problem seemed to be that wdm and xdm
were trying to start on top of each other. I don't any longer have an
/etc/X11/options file, so I cant use that to stop one of them starting.
I couldn't see any obvious options in ?dm.options that did something
equivalent.

Eventually I just deleted /etc/rc2.d/S99xdm - it's a bit klunky, but it
seems to work.

Is this a bug with either of the packages? If so, which one? xdm and wdm
seem to co-exist well as regards to things like depends.

I've heard someone mention switchdm in the past. When I tried that it
said:

$ sudo switchdm --help
grep: /etc/X11/config: No such file or directory
grep: /etc/X11/config: No such file or directory
current configuration :
don't start xdm
don't start kdm

Do you want :
1) start xdm
2) start kdm
3) none

Your choice ? (1/2/3) [2] 3
/usr/sbin/switchdm: /etc/X11/config: No such file or directory
$

obviously it's a hangover from hamm (so why is it on my slink system?)

Cheer,

damon

It's the internal name of the C++ compiler front end.

Apparently, the code you're trying to compile calls the C++ compiler as
`gcc', whereas it should invoke it as `g++' (they're different in stable).
Try telling that to the code, i.e. via env CXX=g++ ./configure or
make CXX=g++.

Problem with PCI Intel EtherExpress Pro (i82865)

1999-05-20 Thread eric a. Farris
I would appreciate it if someone that is on the kernel list could
forward this. please send all replies to my address as well as the list.

I cannot get any kernel to utilize my Intel EtherExpress Pro card. it is
a PCI 10/100 card, and i am using the 2.2.x kernels in Debian GNU/Linux
2.1. When the eepro100.o kernel module is loaded (via modprobe) i get
init_module: Device or resource busy. /proc/pci shows the card as
detected, here's the relevant part of /proc/pci:

 Bus 0, device 14, function 0:
Ethernet controller: Intel 82865 (rev 3).
Medium devsel. Fast back-to-back capable. IRQ 11. Master Capable.
Latency=32.  Min Gnt=32.Max Lat=64.
  Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xffafefc0 [0xffafefc0].
  I/O at 0x7f00 [0x7f01].
  Non-prefetchable 20 bit memory at 0xde000 [0xde002].
  Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xff90 [0xff90].

As you can see, /proc/pci reports this card as being based on the Intel
82865 chip. From the /usr/src/linux/drivers/net/eepro100.c file, i see
that this module is for the
82557 and 82558 cards. Apparently this doesn't work with my chipset.
Does anyone know if there is a different driver that i should be using?
Does anyone have a card based on this chip working? how?

gdm is fighting with getty over the keyboard. I'd guess there's a file
called /etc/X11/gdm/Xservers. You'll need to modify the entry for the local

:0 local /usr/bin/X11/X vt7

(of course, replace vt7 with whatever it's ok for your system)

The only possible thing i can think of that i might have done was put

Login.app is launched by init. The configuration script tries to guess some
sane configuration and suggests that.

When i decided to install GDM i removed login.app fearing problems; when
i removed it, it spit some things out about the runlevel stuff.

on removal, it tries to leave things in a sane state. So far, I haven't got
any bug reports regarding this. I'm pretty sure it works ok. (I tested it

Is it simply a bug in GDM? I suppose i'll see...

it's a bug in ... in ... no, wait, it's not really a bug. It's a deficency
in the start up process. Basically, *dm should be run after everything
else, namely, after the getty's are spawned. This is not the case. *dm is
launched _almost_ after everything. But as you and several other people
have found out, almost doesn't do it.

Shortcuts

Sofar I'm pretty happy with Linux, except for X Window. I haven't found one
window manager which makes it easy for a user to put a shortcut on the

Sofar I've used fvwm95, icewm, qvwm and windowmaker, with the latter having

If I use my standard rule for Win95 software (if I can't understand the

Actuall,y you're not making any mistakes about window-managers at all.
Window-manager don't have desktops for the most part. At least none of
the ones you are using. Most of the window-managers use configuration
files to setup buttons or shortcuts to programs through sime kind of
menuing system, wharf bar, or both. KDE and Gnome (maybe others) offer
the ability to create shortcuts on the desktop like windows does. If you
really want this feature, I'd suggest trying one of those
windowm-managers. They're both a bit buggy, but KDE is farther along
than Gnome from what I've heard as far as stability is concerned.

Re: problem with my system includes

1999-05-20 Thread Robert Rati
Ya, that's pretty much what I did I believe and it works fine. There are
already dirs of those names in /usr/include, so you'llhave to either
delete them or rename them. I recommend renaming them as a precaution. I
don't use debian packages for kernels anymore, so symlinking them to
/usr/src/linux/ works best for me. Once you symlink those dirs, and
reboot your machine with whatever kernel /usr/src/linux is, you should be
fine. As for removing your old kernel, you shouldn't have to worry about
it. Old kernels don't get in the way as far as I Know.

Nope, in this case I think the problem is between the chair and the
keyboard. I got it up and running in about an hour, main problem was getting
portions to compile with the current kernel so I could have networking. Has
Win95 installed about 3 hours after that. It is not the fastest thing on the
block when you only give it 16MB of RAM which ends up coming partially out of
swap and running it in on a P5-100. But once installed Windows ran fine,
networked with the rest of my network flawlessly. Was quite interesting SMB
mounting a drive from the same physical machine. I was almost half tempted to
install FreeBSD just to tweak the nose of my friend who is a FreeBSD, ex-Linux
user. :)

Yup. Personally, I think for developers VMWare is something of a godsend.
Imagine this simple situation, run VMWare on your machine, give it ~16Mb or
so, and then run Debian inside Debian. The outer Debian is stable, the inner
is unstable. I won't call it the perfect sandbox, but for $99 bucks, it is
a damned good sandbox. Test out what unstable will do and if it screws up,
darn, reinstall, didn't affect your production environment.

The average compile time for a kernel, (1.2.8ish or so) on the 486sx/25
 6MB took about 6 hours.

A 386 is just plain slower than a 486, even at the same clock speed.
Intel did a lot of profiling and made the most commonly-executed
instructions faster (and slowed some uncommon ones down). I've heard of
compile times in the weeks on modern kernels. I haven't tried it on Irving
yet, but from compiling a few toy programs I wouldn't be surprised...

On the other hand, let me tell you about coding under Minix on an 8088
  w/512K of RAM... :-

Heh, let's try not to start another flame fest with Andy Tannenbaum... ;^) ...
You never never know *what* something like that can lead to... (=:]

Well, considering that linux-8086 can't compile *anything* yet by itself,
Andy's actually slightly ahead. :-

Re: Sendmail Relay.

1999-05-20 Thread Anthony Landreneau
Greetings Thomas,
Thanks for the info, I plugged it in and hopefully it will work. Have
about 200+ domains that I am hosting and trying to relay mail for. Just
for my understanding, where did you get this information? I would like to
understand it a little better for future use. Thanks again,

Anthony

you need an access database to create some exceptions allowing relaying:

create a file called /etc/mail/access with your favourite editor, put
something like the following in it:

example.comRELAY
host.example.org RELAY
anotherhost.example.netRELAY
172.16 RELAY
192.168.1 RELAY

wildcards are implicit in this file -- all 'example.com' hosts will be
allowed to relay, as will all hosts in the 172.16 network

then run:

makemap hash /etc/mail/access /etc/mail/access

and restart sendmail with:

/etc/init.d/sendmail reload

hopefully this should work for you... see how far it gets you.

regards,

-tl

 Subject: Sendmail Relay.

 Greetings,
I am having a problem with the lastest dist of sendmail that is coming
with Debian. With my old sendmail.cf I was able to use my DNS's as mail
relay host for the several dozen domains that I host for. With the new
sendmail.cf all of my domains are getting 550 we do not relay messages.
Anyone had luck working with this? I have checked the sendmail site and
the HowTo docs, but I have to tell you it is not making a lot of sense to
 me. Your help is appriciated.

wvdial, pon ,poff

1999-05-20 Thread tf
hey all

I need to be able to connect. until recently, pon dialed, but left my
connection open (I get the sound like if you leave the
phone off the hook.) wvdial does the same thing. pon no longer works even to
the extent that it did, can't find a shared
library... wvdial still dials but never connects...

anyone have any ideas?

Does it give you the option to open the file in the browser?
That's what you want to do. Otherwise, save it as a file
and then choose File | Open Page | Choose File

All the disk images are linked form somewhere in section 5. No zip, but
there's only 8 or 10 files to download anyway.

When I click on this link, all I get is my browser prompting me to save the

This same thing happens in IE 4.0 and Netscape 4.0 too. Is there something
wrong with the link, or is there something special; about the file/page? i
seem to be able to access the Sparc page OK.

I installed the last beta without any problems. I had NT4 and Win98 working in

In reply to:eric a. Farris

Quoting eric a. Farris([EMAIL PROTECTED]):

 Latency=32.  Min Gnt=32.Max Lat=64.

Does anyone have a card based on this chip working? how?

Don't know if this will help or not, but...

less /usr/src/linux/Documentation/Configure.help

EtherExpress PRO support
CONFIG_EEXPRESS_PRO
If you have a network (Ethernet) card of this type, say Y. Note
however that the EtherExpress PRO/100 Ethernet card has its own
separate driver. Please read the Ethernet-HOWTO, available via FTP
  (user: anonymous) in ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO.

This driver is also available as a module ( = code which can be
inserted in and removed from the running kernel whenever you want).
The module will be called eepro.o. If you want to compile it as a
module, say M here and read Documentation/modules.txt as well as
  Documentation/networking/net-modules.txt.

This is from the 2.2.9 Docs.

try sending a mail message to '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' from any other mailer. If
this bounces, then what you need to do is enable relaying for localhost.
I assume you are using exim (it's the default now); for some strange reason,
the configuration script does not enable realying from 127.0.0.1, which breaks
a lot of things. I always have to go in and edit the exim.conf manually,
although lately I have just begun to install smail instead.

 Someone else will need to tell you the syntax for the exim.conf line;
I don't remember it and don't have a working copy available.

$99 will be the price? I was concerned it might cost much more than that.

If it works, I would be willing to part with $100 for it.
