ximian gnome on unstable

2001-03-17 Thread jdls
Hi,
I would like to know if it's possible to install ximian/helix gnome on
unstable.I cannot seem to install it using manual installation (via editing
sources.list, then doing apt-get update;apt-get install task-helix-gnome) or
using the sh go-gnome script provided by ximian. it bogs out and complains that
I have requested an impossible situation and that task-helix-gnome cannot
continue because it needs gnome-games but that cannot be installed???

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Both machines should have an IP number and should know each others ip-nr,
that's the function of /etc/hosts. For a local network a bunch of ip-nrs
is reserved 10/8, 172.?/16 and 192.168/16. So if you put something like

   127.0.0.1 localhost
   192.168.1.1 one.localnet
   192.168.1.2 two.localnet

in /etc/hosts of each machine, the first step is made.

The second step is entering the relevant things in /etc/network/interfaces.
On machine one.localnet this should look like:

   # /etc/network/interfaces -- configuration file for ifup(8), ifdown(8)

   # The loopback interface
   iface lo inet loopback

   # The first network card (network, broadcast and gateway are optional)
   iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.1.1
netmask 255.255.255.0

On machine two.localnet all is the same but for the ip-nr, there the address
line of the first network card should read:

address 192.168.1.2

Okee, w're almost done. We need to assure that the driver for your
network card is loaded, have a look at dmesg's output (dmesg | less)
and look for a line starting with "eth0". If it is missing, look up
the brand and model of your network card and use modconf to add the
correct driver.

And finally to make it all work (normally done at boot) on both
machines do:

   # ifup eth0

As far as I know, now "ping {two, one}.localnet" should work.

When you connect each other directly, you have to use cross

Fixed. Off by one error in xserver-xfree86. I'll post a bug presently.

My monitor manual says the horizontal refresh is from 27 to 79 kHz,
  so I used 27 - 80 in XFConfig-4. Now I've got a rock-solid image at
75 Hz. And the monitor hasn't blown up yet. And surprise! the screen

Debian Home LAN

2001-03-17 Thread Ronald L. Chichester
I want to set up a home network (just with PPP access to the Internet),
but am having some trouble getting the machines to talk to each other.
Both boxes have 100 MB Ethernet NICs. I want to set up one as a server
and the other as a workstation. Both boxes are running Linux.

Internet access is not important, as each box has its own modem.

What I'm more interested in is transferring data from one box to
another. (No, the files I want to transfer are major backups of 400+ MB
each, so I don't want to tie up phone lines for that long.)

I would prefer an NIS/NFS setup, but I'd be happy with just simple ftp.
I've got the server set up with ftp, but haven't been able to get either
of them talking to one another. (Each time I try to ping or ftp the
other, it gives me a "host unreachable" error message).

There are several articles out there that have home networks, but each
of them is assuming either a cable modem or DSL. Generally these set a
DNS, gateway and/or subnets that I can't duplicate.

Is there a resource out there specifically for a standalone LAN (static
IP) or a PPP type LAN with example hosts, host.conf, resolv.conf,
nsswitch.conf, etc. files so that I can emulate it?

TIA,

Ron

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

My new config file has the same entries for HorizSync and
  VertRefresh, namely:

HorizSync 27 - 79
VertRefresh 55 - 90

These values are from the manual. Note that this is an *old*
monitor--I bought it used in '94--so the refresh rates are lower
than your (probably) newer and smaller monitors.

So, is this a bug in X v4? These values, or the Modelines, in v3
were able to produce a pleasing 74 Hz, whereas v4 can only pull an
  Excedrin-downing 60 Hz.

Is it possible there is an off-by-one error somewhere? How much
trouble could I get into by fudging these numbers up a little? If
so, how high would you go?

I'm also curious why the x v4 config (when running dpkg-reconfigure
  xserver-xfree86) doesn't offer a 1280x1024 resolution on the screen
where you select the resolutions you want to see. Could that
observation be related? Hmmm, rerunning dpkg-reconfigure doesn't
  write the XF86Config-4 file...

p.s. I learned a lot about my monitor today. It turns out adjusting
the size only affects the current resolution, so I was able to get
rid of those margins--in all resolutions--with the monitor
adjustments. I'm feeling a little silly that I haven't tried this
before in the 7 years that I've had this monitor. I just figured I'd
get it right for 1280x1024 and leave it alone.

So that just leaves the refresh rate.

can't resolve names, ipchains or dns problem

2001-03-17 Thread Nick
Hi list,

I have an internal network setup behind linux on a single static IP
I am having problem reolving names but can ping IP's numericaly.

I set up dhcp to allocate 192.168.1.0/24 throught the internal network
Then I setup ipchains very basic, just to get it all going

ipchains -P forward DENY
ipchains -A forward -s 192.168.1.0/24 -j MASQ

kernel is set to forward, echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

So I can ping from an internal machine to any global IP address, but when it
comes to ping www.yahoo.com, get a bad host message.

Using 192.168.1.1 as gateway for internal machines
looked at /etc/resolv.conf, looks ok
/etc/hosts
/etc/network/interfaces all good too

route tables look ok
have 255.255.255.255 line for dhcp windozs
default gateway ok

I can ping domain names and ip address from the linux firewall.
Just doesn't seem to want to forward those requests for the internal network

HELP!!!

Sorry, I should have spelled out more fully the --force-things I tried. I
have read the manual, I think quite carefully, for several days, and it's
either not in there or I'm mmissing something.

The "obvious" thing to try is either --configure (which is all that dpkg
--audit suggests), the output of which I posted in my earlier post, or else

#dpkg --force-remove-reinstreq --purge xserver-xfree86
(Reading database ... 20414 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing xserver-xfree86 ...
dpkg: error processing xserver-xfree86 (--purge):
subprocess pre-removal script returned error exit status 10
dpkg: error while cleaning up:
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 xserver-xfree86

As you can see, it is the same as everything else; the pre-removal script
(or post-installation script, as the case may be) keeps failing.

I have also managed to manually download the xserver-xfree86...deb file, and
got it to unpack using apt-get unpack, thinking perhaps the copy that had
been automatically downloaded by dselect when I first started all this (and
which has since, evidently, been cleaned away) might have been corrupt.
Well, still no joy.

So I followed another user's suggestion and downloaded the binary from
ftp.xfree86.org and installed it. It installed fine, but I _still_ can't
clear the error in the package managers! xserver-xfree86 still shows up as
a "Broken Optional Package in Section X11", and it won't remove!

This is making me crazy. Do dpkg, apt-get, etc. rally not have some kind of
"override" that will just let you start over? Is my only option to
reformat the drive and install the whole OS from scratch?

I tried to mount FreeBSD from Debian but can only
do it to root, nowhere else. I use the following:

mount -t ufs -o ufstype=44bsd /dev/hda7 /mnt

Below is information I gathered. I really don't know
what it is telling me but I suspect something is wrong.
How can I fix it?

Not exactly. I've successfully installed jbuilder 4 as root on

Have a look at http://community.borland.com/article/0,1410,26055,00.html
Also, try starting it from command line and check the output.

Re: v4 x screen size and flicker

2001-03-17 Thread Ross Boylan
I have a G200 and NEC XV17. It works quite well, but I used the windows
settings to guide my X settings.

I see the mga_h1 error too, though no ill effects (unless this is
responsible for overlay mode not working). I filed a bug about it (87504)
which was reported upstream.

Probably the new install wiped away your old settings, so it's now picking
the first listed choice, or something like that. Try editing your
configuration file, comparing with your old one if possible.

Looks like X thinks your monitor isn't fast enough. You can set the
monitor info in /etc/X11/XF86Config. You'll have to find out if your
monitor will support higher ranges. For instance, my 17" monitor
supports these:

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Generic Monitor"
HorizSync 30-95
VertRefresh 50-180
EndSection

Notice the upper end of the ranges are substantially higher. So with
same video card, but different monitor settings, I can get up to:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (which is way too high [small] for my tastes). If it
supported higher ranges before, it will support them again.

Note: I don't know what that mga_hal is about (maybe for a different
Matrox card...).

this is the new input layer, you need to have a few other options
turned on for it to work, such as:

CONFIG_INPUT_EVDEV=y
CONFIG_INPUT_KEYBDEV=y
CONFIG_INPUT_MOUSEDEV=y
CONFIG_INPUT_MOUSEDEV_SCREEN_X=1024
CONFIG_INPUT_MOUSEDEV_SCREEN_Y=768

you will probably find more info about the input layer and usb mice on
powerpc GNU/Linux sites such as penguinppc.org then anywhere. recent
macs have no other option then usb input devices. the setup should be
not much different from powerpc to x86. also check archives of
debian-powerpc.

If you are using Gnome or KDE, try installing grdb or krdb. This will
apply your GTK/KDE theme to 'legacy' applications like netscape. On my
woody system there's also /etc/X11/Xresources/netscape which might be
what you are looking for.

USB mouse in gpm + 2.4

2001-03-17 Thread Jonathan Markevich
Has anyone used a usb mouse in kernel 2.4? I'm running Woody and finally
got 2.4 running, hoping for its advantages. I can't seem to get gpm to
recognize the mouse.

I found a page that recommends:
mknod /dev/mice c 13 63

And I also tried:
mknod /dev/input/mouse0 c 180 16

...as a test, based on devices.txt in the kernel tarball. My /proc/devices
contains:

Character devices:
  1 mem
  2 pty
  3 ttyp
  4 ttyS
  5 cua
  6 lp
  7 vcs
 10 misc
 13 input
 14 sound
108 ppp
128 ptm
136 pts
162 raw
180 usb
195 nvidia

Block devices:
  2 fd
  3 ide0
  7 loop
 22 ide1

Ideas? Thanks.

Borland's JBuilder & O'Reilly's _Learning_Java_

2001-03-17 Thread Judith Elaine Bush

Dear All:

Has anyone installed and run Borland's JBuilder 4.0 or 3.5 on a
potato system (not as root) successfully?

Version 3.5 comes on a CD with O'Reilley's _Learning_Java_. I
installed it using an IBM JVM (below for version). Install went
well, but it died with an error (below for verbose out) when i
tried to start it.

Version 4.0 appears to come with its own JVM and also installed
without complaint. When i start it, it opens the licensing window
and i can fill out name & company, but no other form or button
options work.

So, if anyone's bothered to solve this sort of problem, I'd love
to hear from you.

On the other hand, i suppose i'll just happily use emacs.

Thanks,

judith

  Packages containing files in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults
need to move them to /etc/X11/app-defaults instead; they will not be used
by the X Window System until they are moved.

Does this mean I should not upgrade any X stuff?

Yes, but Debian makes an effort to make elisp add-on packages work

The Gnus versioning scheme:

-- Versions with an odd minor number (5.7, 5.9) are "stable" and can
generally only be found distributed with an Emacs (possibly even
   only with FSF Emacs).

-- Versions with an even minor number (5.8.8) are "beta" versions, but
late revisions tend to work fairly well. I'd recommend 5.8.8 for
   most Gnus users.

-- Named versions are "alpha" versions. Once upon a time there were
frequent releases of these, but these days everything's in CVS.
Pterodactyl Gnus was before Gnus 5.8, and Oort Gnus is the current
release. As noted previously, alpha release names are in strictly
decreasing alphabetical order by first letter of name.

As I said before, I'd recommend Gnus 5.8.8 for most people who use
Gnus, and in particular for everyone who isn't tracking the CVS Gnus.
Conveniently, the Gnus package in Debian unstable is for Gnus 5.8.8,
so you're set there.

I installed the `bug' package and report bugs with the `bug' program
that the package installs. Just type `bug task-x-window-system' and
  follow the prompts.

It appears that `reportbug' is a better system, but depends on the
nonexistent python-newt package in woody. I've already reported the
  bug against python-newt.

I'm pretty sure that won't work. As best I remember, gnus byte
compiles differently in emacs and xemacs so the two versions are not
compatible. The xemacs package at debian comes with an older version
of gnus, but it's a piece of cake to download a tarball from gnus.org
and roll your own. There is always a stable release version called
gnus.tar.gz and a development version called something like
ognus.tar.gz or pgnus.tar.gz. They're working backwards through the
alphabet so ognus is newer than pgnus. Kind of like debian stable and
unstable, the stable version is usually quite solid while the
development version may be broken in some fashion on any given day.

Re: Minimum RAM Requirement.

2001-03-17 Thread Ian Thomas
Check out the Linux Documentation Project, it has
instructions on how to setup a system with 4 mb. I
have followed these instructions and gotten an IBM
laptop with slightly less than 4 mb to work fine.
Although the installs start with non-debian dists the
author says that you can use almost any distro to add
more functionality after the initial barebones system
is up.

Well, if you're looking for X resource settings which affect Netscape, look
for a file named Netscape.ad. On my potato system, it's in
/usr/lib/netscape/476/communicator/Netscape.ad, among other places. This
lists all of the resources that Netscape acknowledges.

It's been a while since I've looked through that file, and it's quite
large, so I may be wrong, but I don't remember any color settings in
there. Still, it's worth a look.

v4 x screen size and flicker

2001-03-17 Thread Bill Wohler
I just upgraded to X v4 (woody) and selected the mga driver for my
  Matrox Millenium G200. I have an NEC MultiSync 6FG (21") monitor. I
  now have two problems:

1. Large margins around the screen.
2. Incredible flicker.

At 1280x1024, there is now a large margin around the screen: 1 cm
top and bottom, 2 cm right and left. xvidtune can't make it bigger.
Is xvidtune still used in v4 (since I noticed that the mode lines
are cheerfully no longer in the configuration) or is there a newer
tool that I can use to adjust the size? I don't really want to
adjust the monitor size (much) since the size was perfect under v3
and the size in the console is fine.

Also note that my 1024x768 screen is also small; however, my 800x600
screen extends past the edges of the monitor.

Also, there is now noticeable flicker which is giving me quite a
headache. I've used the same horizontal and vertical refresh rates
that were present in v3, but I see in the log below that I'm only
pulling 60 Hz, rather than 75 or higher. Suggestions?

I also noted that mga_hal failed to load. Is this a problem?

Are there any other tools besides SuperProbe that can be used to
  debug/adjust these things?

Thanks for any help you all can provide.

Need expert help on default selection and dependencies in dselect

2001-03-17 Thread Onno
Hi All,

I'm using Debian a few years now and it's the best distro around, but
there are two annoying topics that irritate me when I'm installing
debian and using dselect.

1) By default, the first time you use dselect it automatically selects
a standard system. Using R doesn't help, you have to purge the
packages you don't want by hand.

My question: What must be done to disable this auto selection when you
use dselect for the first time.

Expert question: What must be done to disable -a few packages- for auto
selection when you use dselect for the first time.

2) I do not want to use debconf or debconf-tiny. It's probably a
personal thing and it may work for others but I simply don't like
them. I just purge them when I'm installing a debian system but some
packages do not only recommend or suggest debconf they simply depend
on it. As far as I know a package should always be able to install in
'text' mode and optional have debconf as a suggestion so I think it's
wrong(?) to force people to use debconf or debconf-tiny.

My question: What is the best way to avoid debconf in packages that
 depend on it?

Expert question: Can I make dselect ignore depends on debconf?

Please cc me because I'm not subscribed (anymoreÂ…).

Sincerely,

Onno

The Debian xemacs packages include Gnus and a number of other "external"
elisp packages. For instance, xemacs 21.1.10-5 (as included with potato)
contains gnus 5.6.45. As far as I can tell, xemacs will use its own copy
of gnus by default, but there's likely a way you can get it to use the
newer version (assuming it works with xemacs). You'll probably have to
play around with your load-path.

I'm not really sure what the differences are between gnus 5.6.45 and 5.8.8;
it probably depends on how heavily you've customized your Gnus.

pppd problem ?

It complains about the module: tty-ldisc-3. I have absolutely no clue

Dual ethernet cards

2001-03-17 Thread Steve Doerr
Hello.
I just rebuilt the 2.2.17 kernel for a firewall/router and got the
following errors with my NIC's.

/var/log/debug - eth0 no IPv6 routers present
/var/log/dmesg - IP-Config: No network devices available

lspci -vvb lists both cards and I added the appropriate "append=" line
to lilo.conf.

I followed the firewall/ethernet howto's about building the kernel for
this as best I could (it has changed a little bit). The card support is
in the kernel and not a module.

Does anyone have any ideas what I overlooked, or what might be wrong?

Thanks for any input.

You will need to add yourself to the audio group, and if you are using modules
(see addgroup)

you need to load these at boot time by adding these to /etc/modules:

sound
# My main sound module, does not seem to need any special options
es1371

lsmod output:

es1371 23876 2

you may also want to get an audio mixer (package aumix, for some reason I have
to run
this even though the software says it is NOT muted...you can use this utility to

Re: dpkg fails to allocte memory ?

2001-03-17 Thread B Thomas

No I don't get any message reporting VM failure. But I did manage a fix by
loging into single user mode and apt works just fine. I don't know why though.
However I think it is time I upgrade to 2.2.18 :-). Please note the suggestions
in the bug report that it may be a problem with locale did not work. Since I
had tried to run kde after "unset LANG unset LC_CTYPE ".

RE: Getting LILO right

2001-03-17 Thread Rick Commo
Thank you Tom and David!

I was being *completely* thrown off by the fact that there was the "root"
directive and I thought that the "image" directive was root-relative!!

OK then, so at this point, I will try the band aids mentioned. But at this
point I will probably scrape the disk and repartition since I finally
decided to make "workaday" distribution and will need fewer partitions to
play with. It all boils down to a partition for stable-Debian, test-Debian
and "gee I'd like to look this distro over for yucks".

I purchased a Soundblaster 16 (PCI) CT4810 OEM card yesterday and still can't
get the thing to work. I've selected all the soundblaster choices for
the kernel as well as pnp support. The card isn't detected on boot,
nothing in dmesg. I've tried using module es1371, got a little static.
/sbin/lspci -v shows -

00:08.0 Multimedia audio controller: Ensoniq: Unknown device 5880 (rev 02)

Flags: bus master, slow devsel, latency 64, IRQ 10
I/O ports at d800 [size=64]

I got this card because I though it would be easy to install. Are there
any lower end cards that are? How do I get this thing to work.

I had the same problem as you.
but I didn't install the server again via dselect.

Just remove everything of /usr/X11R6/* and /etx/X/*

Download the currecnt server from the net ftp.xfree86.org and re install it.
Before you start installing it, read the file may.txt . it will tell you
howto and don't forget to create your links.

I am trying to install X 4.0 on my (newly installed) debian 2.2.18-pre21-ide
system. I've got it partially-working after creating the missing
/etc/X11/X link (I get a window with a primitive xterm and an X cursor
using startx, but no pop-up menus and it doesn't launch with gdm). The
primary problem is the xserver-xfree86 package configuration during
installation failed. Now I am in limbo: It won't let me re-install
xserver-xfree86, because it thinks the current version is up-to-date. But
it won't let me remove it, and try again either. Here's what happens if I
try to install, using dpkg:

# dpkg install xserver-xfree86
Reading Package Lists...
Building Dependency Tree...
Sorry, xserver-xfree86 is already the newest version.

And if I try to remove it, again using dpkg:

# dpkg remove xserver-xfree86

The following packages will be REMOVED:
  xserver-xfree86
0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

Re: sound with 2.4.1

2001-03-17 Thread Gudmundur Erlingsson
Did you compile the sound support as module? I had some problem with the
ESS1868 soundcard, I didn't read the documentation in the first round, and
the support in the new kernel is a bit different from the 2.2.x kernels.
Anyway, read all the docs concerning sound and your specific soundcard, and
if you compile it directly into the kernel don't forget to choose plug and
play support. If you compile it as a module you may have to do some
tweaking, there should be information about that in the docs.

hope this helps,

Gudmundur

(just to add a bit) If it doesn't tell you the exact chipset, it may
give you a vendor and model ID - there's a good chance you can figure
out the chipset from this. Just do a search on Google for:

vendor model ethernet

Re: Installation problems

Hi,

I have had some trouble too regarding the rescue floppy's. If you are
installing from CD, you might try to write the rescue image on floppy and
during installation make Linux read it back from the floppy again. I guess
there is some error in the installation program.

The images are located in:
dists/stable/main/disks-i386/images-1.44/rescue.img
as far as I can remember. You can write it to a floppy using rawrite in
dos (located somewhere on the installation cd).

Hope that helps,
Sebastiaan

color is white, which is very hard to read on a white background.

Re: ppp mystery

2001-03-17 Thread Gil Elad
Thanks for the advice. It worked like a charm. I don't know why I hadn't
thought of it earlier.
I tried Isolating the one setting which is crucial that the modem received
in Windows and not

in Linux and found out it was AT&B1 which manages the modem's serial port rate.
&B0 means variable, follows connection rate
&B1 means fixed serial port rate
&B2 means fixed in ARQ mode, variable in non-ARQ mode.

I guess the port rate needs to be fixed.

Thanks a lot

Gil Elad

At 16:30 15/03/2001 -0500, you wrote:

Gil,

I had a very similar problem with my US Robotics V.Everything external
modem. This may sound insane, but my problem seemed to be related to modem
initialization strings.

There is a setting someplace in Windows for its dialer that makes it create
a log file when it dials the modem. One of the things that it puts in the
log file is the initialization string that it sends to the modem. I'm
sorry, but I forget exactly where the setting is (I have been using DSL for
some time now and my modem is gathering dust on the shelf :-) ). Look
through the properties for your dial-up connection. I believe that the log
file is created in the \windows subdirectory.

The way I got it to work with my modem was to take the modem initialization
string (it starts with AT and has a bunch of letters and numbers and symbols
like "&", "%", #" in it - please forgive me if you already knew that :-) )
from the log file and plop it into my wvdial configuration file so that it
used the exact same initialization string as Windows. There might be more
than one line in the log file. Check the wvdial documentation for more info
on how to modify its configuration file if you're not sure.

That might not be your problem, but it was what worked for me.

As an aside, I believe that whether you need to use PAP or CHAP is
determined by your ISP, not Windows. I believe that most of them use PAP,
though. I could be mistaken.

I hope that helps you out.

Best regards,

Tom Delany

during the installation of Debian 2.2r2. In fact I can't install Kernel and
Modules because the program warn me that is impossible to create a Rescue Floppy
or to load some drivers. How can I solve this problem? If the problem is the
installation from CDs, how can I install from another source?
Please, help me because I've no idea about Linux
installation.
Thank you very much!

Maybe esound-common is still an old version. You could try a apt-get
update before trying again, because esound-common could have been
updated.

I had something similar happen when I did woody->sid dist-upgrade.

Anyway, make sure that the 2 other 'esound' packages are selected for
installation also. This solved (one of) my problem(s) - hope it works

I found out what to do in concerning this problem. There is just a
missing dependency of the deb. EMarket needs ZPatterns. So I solved
this. But now I am having trouble in using this EMarket. In the
README.gz is written that I would have to create some ZClasses. But I
don't know how to do this. Is here anybody able to give me a more
detailed outline on how to do this.

Sorry for being not very debian-specific.

Both ibm 390 and vmvare will be overkill. Ibm too expensive in my case

heavy. Probably I will try user-mode linux. I've heard that people at

Linux 2.2.17 has some problems with virtual memory management. Perhaps
the dpkg problem is related to this. Does linux log something like
"VM: do_try_to_free_pages failed for [dpkg]"?
I suggest to install Linux 2.2.18 + Andrea Arcangeli's
VM-global-2.2.18pre25 Patch, which can be found on a kernel.org mirror
under people/andrea or Linux >= 2.2.19pre2, which has this VM patch
included.

But I found nothing about this in Compiling Sendmail page.

Can anybody, please, help me.

WindowMaker Postint problem in sid

2001-03-17 Thread Sean Quinlan
Hi,

I'm not sure if this is a bug in the windowmaker package or a problem
with my setup, so thought I'd ask it here first.

I'm tracking sid at the moment, and after doing an apt-get upgrade on
my system this morning, I got the following error with the wmaker
0.64.0-5 package:

Setting up wmaker (0.64.0-5) ...
update-alternatives: unable to make
/usr/man/man1/x-window-manager.1.gz.dpkg-tmp a symlink to
/etc/alternatives/x-window-manager.1.gz: No such file or directory
dpkg: error processing wmaker (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 2
Errors were encountered while processing:
 wmaker
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I don't have a /usr/man/man1 directory on my system, although I do
have a /usr/share/man/man1 directory, where all the man pages or
symlinks are installed.

Here is the relevant part of wmaker.postinst:

  configure)
 update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/x-window-manager \
 x-window-manager /usr/X11R6/bin/wmaker 50 \
 --slave /usr/man/man1/x-window-manager.1.gz \
 x-window-manager.1.gz /usr/X11R6/man/man1/wmaker.1x.gz

I tried changing the wmaker.postinst script, and replacing
/usr/man/man1 with /usr/share/man/man1 and that allowed it to install
with no problems. Does this mean that I should file a bug report
again wmaker?

Thanks

Does this happen shortly after responding to a message on this list? If
so, some people have their mailers misconfigured in such a way that a
certain header (I forget which at the moment, Sender: ??) causes your
mailer to try to send the message to such a person, but the address is
not valid (usually only a local address). This bounce will come
directly from your system (exim).

dialing with wvdial without termonal auth on PPP

2001-03-17 Thread elemag
Hi ,
I-ve got some problems dialing to my ISP using wvdial ( I use dial-up) . My
distro is Debian 2.2 , kernel 2.4.2 , pppd 2.4.0 and wvdial1.41 .
The problem is that my ISP no longer supports the terminal asscess ,which
causes wvdial to wait for prompt and not establishing the ppp connection
( sending PAP stuff , etc .) . My question is how to
force wvdial to send all this PAP secrets and to esteblish connecting
successfully whitout waiting for the terminal prompt . It worked well when my
ISP supported the terminal access . I just need to make it work using PAP , but
not waiting for the terminal . How to do that ?
Should I use any other internet dailer instead of wvdial ? Which one is
recomended???

sysklogd in unstable was just recently split into two packages, sysklogd
and klogd. Did you install klogd afterwards? Though I don't see how
kernel logging is related to PAM, but that's something you could try.

Re: Getting LILO right

2001-03-17 Thread Tom Pfeifer
The problem is that you are using the same kernel to boot all 4
installations. Each one of your 4 boot menu choices specifies
'image=/boot/vmlinuz'

You have to specify the path to each kernel that you want to run
for each installation in /etc/lilo.conf. There's a few ways to do
that. For example, you could copy the other 3 kernels to your /boot
directory on /dev/hda1, renaming them appropriately - so that you
have something like this:

# Mandrake stable
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=ML7.2_stable
root=/dev/hda1
read-only
# Debian
image=/boot/vmlinuz-from-hda5
label=Debian_stable
root=/dev/hda5
read-only
# Mandrake 8.0 beta
image=/boot/vmlinuz-from-hda6
label=ML8.0_test
root=/dev/hda6
read-only
# Debian sandbox
image=/boot/vmlinuz-from-hda7
label=Debian_test
root=/dev/hda7
read-only

Instead of copying the kernels, it's probably better to just mount each
of the other 3 partitions from MH 7.2, and then specify the path to each
of the other kernels in /etc/lilo.conf.

Another approach would be to install a separate Lilo in each of the
other 3 partition's boot sectors, and then use the Lilo in the MBR
(installed from MH 7.2) to chain to the others. Your /etc/lilo.conf
for MH 7.2 would look like this:

# Mandrake stable
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=ML7.2_stable
root=/dev/hda1
read-only
# Debian
other=/dev/hda5
label=Debian_stable
# Mandrake 8.0 beta
other=/dev/hda6
label=ML8.0_test
# Debian sandbox
other=/dev/hda7
label=Debian_test

For each of the other 3 installs, you would need to install a separate
Lilo from that partition in the boot sector of that partition
(specify 'boot=/dev/hda5' for Debian-stable etc.). Your boot sequence
for the 4 installations would look like this:

Mandrake stable: Lilo MBR -> kernel /dev/hda1
Debian_stable:Lilo MBR -> Lilo /dev/hda5 -> kernel /dev/hda5
Mandrake 8.0: Lilo MBR -> Lilo /dev/hda6 -> kernel /dev/hda6
Debian sandbox: Lilo MBR -> Lilo /dev/hda7 -> kernel /dev/hda7

any problem with security. and non-us.debian.org?

2001-03-17 Thread G.Angely
Since friday 16 in the morning, the ftp servers non-us.debian.org and
security.debian.org are not accessible.

There is a reply to a ping (same address: 132.229.131.40), but no access
for ftp ("could not chdir to .../~/").

I send this mail to the user list; is there a more appropiate mail
address for such problems?

Gaetan A.
