The return path is the actual email address of the infected victim/sucker. Ehem! I write them an email telling them that they need to update and run their antivirus software and where to get the swen removal tool if they don't have antivirus software. I also tell them where to get real MS updates. This happened so often to day I started saving it in a text file to save time. This virus is really taking advantage of the net naifs. Alot of the responces read like little children. I use webmail accounts for my email lists so spam assasin won't work. EveryBuddy questions (MS update and others)
I've been using EveryBuddy on Debian and RH for at least a year now. The past couple weeks I've been getting the "MSN Security Team" message "You need to update or won't be able to use this service" or something to that effect. Trillian use to get the same message but today I downloaded their patch to the msn and yahoo protocols. I have been wondering for a while if some update would be made for EveryBuddy and tonight as I search around I'm not getting the "MSN Security Team" message, so I decided to wait on reporting the 'bug'. Besides, I thought it was odd that there wasn't already a bug report for this error. I haven't researched the issue to see if it just requires a change in Windows based code, or in the protocol. Also while I was searching around on this I came across a page talking about a 'DoS' issue with EveryBuddy 0.4.3. I tried the test and didn't experiance the crash they were talking about, so I sent them an email saying that it didn't seem to affect version 0.4.3-1 in Debian. http://xforce.iss.net/xforce/xfdb/12817 http://www.securiteam.com/securitynews/5HP031FAUE.html The everybuddy package in Debian _seems_ to be abandoned/superceeded by EBlite and ayttm. Is the EveryBuddy (v0.4.3) in Debian being maintained upstream, or have it's developers stopped or switched over to one of the newer projects? It has some bugs against it that are pretty old. http://www.everybuddy.com/ http://sourceforge.net/projects/ayttm/ http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?pkg=everybuddy Anyone have some insight or comments on these issues? If I had all my net contacts on Jabber or something else I wouldn't wonder, but they arent. Most are on MSN, and a few on Yahoo. Lost sound capabilities (/dev/dsp: No such device)
I had my YMH0800:OPL3-SA3 Sound Board working with the ad1848 driver, isapnp etc under Woody. Then somewhere in the course of installing a stock non-installation kernel, adding second ethernet card, and loading the IP masquerading and iptables modules, the sound stopped working. The symptoms are given below. The Sound HOWTO only recommends for such cases to go "pnpdump > /etc/isapnp.conf", uncomment the correct lines in isapnp.conf, run "isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf", reload the modules, and enjoy. However I have no idea which lines of the *long* isapnp.conf to uncomment - it is quite non-obvious to me, and I'm not even sure this is on the right track. Any tips? Here is the output showing the symptoms and troubleshooting I've tried. The output of pnpdump is at the end, since it's so long. retro:/music# mpg123 "The Twigs - The Turning.mp3" High Performance MPEG 1.0/2.0/2.5 Audio Player for Layer 1, 2, and 3. touchpads in Linux
Dear people, I'm trying to find a good touchpad (as a standalone device) to use with Linux in the place of a regular mouse. After spending quite a lot of time surfing the web, I am more confused than ever. The best general reference I found http://www.tifaq.org/mice/touchpads.html The main touchpads available all seem to have the name Glidepoint. The major manufacturer of these appears to be Cirque, which has the Easycat, Smartcat etc. However, Cirque has also licensed the technology to Alps, which makes their own Glidepoint. Strangely enough, the information I was able to find with regard to Linux was mostly about the Alps version, though the Cirques seem to be the most popular. I found traces of a driver someone has written for the Cirque *cat series, called Kitcat, but the main site seems to be defunct. To further confuse things, there appears to be something called the Adesso Smartcat. I am not sure what this is. If you are using one of these products under Linux, I'd be greatly obliged if you could tell me how well it works, and whether you would recommend it for use under Linux. Thanks. Checking loaded modules?
Is there a way of checking what modules are loaded? I ask because I want to upgrade to 2.4.18-k7 (so I can use sndconfig), but the image doesn't support my network driver (I know, I've tried). If I can find out what module in 2.20 my network card is using, I can compile 2.4.18-k7 with the correct module in there. I'm very new to Linux (only started installing Debian a few days back, had to re-install several times since then because I'm not too hot on it). Please CC your replies to me, I haven't subscribed to the list (yet). Thanks a lot :) Joe. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? logins and logouts hang
Hi My computer keeps hanging and timing out when I try to log in, and it hangs when I log out. It was ok yesterday when I booted up my computer after the hurricane, but this morning I tried to run 'sudo tail -f /var/log/apache/access.log' and sudo hung; it wouldn't respond to ctrl-c, I had to kill the rxvt window. I tried a few more times, and the same thing happened. Then I tried to ssh into my computer from my parents' computer, and the login hung. I ended up trying 2 or 3 times, all of which hung on login. Then I tried logging in on normally at a regular text terminal on my computer and the login timed out after 60 seconds. So then, just out of curiosity, I tried logging out of one of the X terminals I had up (I keep 2 X screens running at a time), and the logout is *still* hung after 15 mins. I can move the mouse, but the blackbox slit is gone and the menu doesn't pop up when I right-click, so I'm like half-way logged out. So to recap, I try to log in-- I type my username, hit enter, the prompt for the password comes up, I type in my password and hit enter, and nothing happens till it times out-- *if* it times out. And when I log out, I get half-way logged out and the logout hangs, but not the whole terminal. What could be the problem? Could it be a problem with pam? A hardware (like, overheating) problem? Do you need any more info? TIA. -- Vikki RoemerHomepage: http://neuromancer.homelinux.com/ Registered Linux user #280021 http://counter.li.org/ Q: What's a light-year? parport module, ASUS motherboard
I recently installed Debian testing on a newly built machine with an ASUS P4P800 motherboard. The kernel is a patched version of 2.4.22 (patched to include support for the on-board LAN controller on the ASUSP4P800). Everything works fine except for a problem with local printing. Lprng is the print-spooler software. Printing to networked printers works fine, but printing to the HP Printer attached to the parallel port is impossible. The error-message produced by numerous sources (e.g. checkpc) is: cannot open lp device '/dev/lp0' - No such device or address I've tracked the problem down, I believe, to a failure to load the parport_pc kernel-module. The relevant part of /etc/modules.conf looks like this: alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc which I believe should have the consequence that parport_pc is loaded when parport is loaded (and the compiled module is in fact in /lib/modules/2.4.22). But it won't load. lsmod reveals: # lsmod Module Size Used byNot tainted lp 6432 0 (autoclean) parport14880 0 [lp] sk98lin 151712 1 (autoclean) Any attempt to load parport_pc (or the combination of parport, lp, and parport_pc) by hand fails, and gives the usual: Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters. The User Guide for the motherboard says that the parallel port is on IRQ 7, but trying: insmod parport_pc irq=7 Has anyone dealt with a similar problem? If anyone has advice or help to offer, I'd be most grateful. Thanks for reading this far, Jim McCloskey -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? OT: How to copy .ISO to flash drive
Anyone know how to copy an .ISO file to a flash drive? Specifically, I'm wanting to copy the 50MB .ISO "D* Small Linux" (you know, if you'd change that name I could hand out this business card CDs like candy; as it is, it's not getting my playtime in my part of the world) to a 64MB "PenDrive", in the hopes that the flash drive will be bootable on newer machines and give me the Linux capability of DSL. (Later, when I can afford a 1GB flash drive, I want to try the same thing with Knoppix.) I tried to run cfdisk on the 50MB DSL bccd to see what partitioning scheme it uses, but cfdisk said the partition table is corrupt, so I'm assuming the CD has some sort of special partitioning/formatting, and I'll need to do a bit-by-bit copy using something like dd. But I don't know how to use dd well enough to get the boot sector in place and etc. Thanks for any tips! -- Kent -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: Debian release schedule
> What is a "non-official apt repository"? If it's "non-official", then > how could it be in "stable"? > > How does "non-official" differ from "official"? I'm not an expert but this is my view: A non-official apt repository is a internet site which have packages that for one or other reason are not in debian main servers (official repositories). Why aren't they in the official repositories? Debian have certain requirements which a package must meet in order to be accepted, and become official. Besides, there is one debian developer responsible for each package, if you are not happy with the way he do the work you can do your own debian package, but, no matter how good your package were, it would still be unofficial. (I think that there is a democratic way in debian to elect package maintainers, but I'm not qualified to talk about that). > > How does "stable" differ from "not stable"? > The debian distribution has 3 flavors: stable, testing and unstable. (You can read about this in the debian site I think). I'll only say that unstable is generally up to date, so probably the gnome you want is already there. Practice have proved that in order to have a nice and updated desktop in debian stable you have to use unofficial apt repositories. Don't worry, they are quite good and usually they will install without problems. You can also upgrade the system to the testing flavor, and after that to unstable if you like, but this process require that you are familiar with apt and dpkg. Other approach many people use to get a nice desktop with debian very quickly is to install knoppix to hard drive in which case you would be using testing/unstable flavors. This way they can install every soft they need from debian official testing/unstable repositories. Alfredo -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? DVDRW: Please help!
OK, I'm bummed. I'm the new owner of a Plextor DVDRW- PX708A, which I understood to be the top-o-the-line of DVD recorders. I'm running an Athlon 1.5Ghz box with 500Mb of RAM. Sid. The Plextor is on the 2nd IDE channel, by itself as master. I've got both cdrecord-prodvd and a patched version of cdrecord: Cdrecord 2.01a16-dvd (i586-mandrake-linux-gnu, extracted via alien). DVD-RW (don't have any DVD-R's) seems to work fine under linux. However, DVD +RW/DVD+R discs produce a coaster every time. However, both are "perfect" when I boot Windows 98 SE. Not that that does me a damn bit of good :( (I keep Win98 SE for the grandchildren and Harry Potter x twice per year.) Please help. I'm looking at a +300$ investment with the boss (She Who Must Be Obeyed) looking over my shoulder. TIA Jeff -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? From what I have read the ATI Radeon cards do not seem to be well supported. Any suggestions will be gratefully appreciated I just upgraded my old nvidia card to an ATI Radeon 9800. It works great. ATI has binary drivers on their website for their radeon cards. There is also an OSS dri project for them that works, but based on what I've seen do not perform as well. ATI cards are very well supported on linux. I too thought they weren't. The binary drivers come with utilities to configure X for you, acceleration is fast, common games like quake3 run great, etc. The only thing to be mindful of is that unlike nvidia, the ATI drivers REQUIRE that your kernel recognize you agp chipset. Even if the ati drivers override agpgart, agpgart must still recognize your chipset. This caused much agravation for me. I'm using a kt400 chipset on the motherboard that isn't well supported in 2.4. I wound up installing 2.6.0 and installed a port of ati's kernel module. There is a backport for 2.4 that helps fix kt400 support. I just went with 2.6 as I wanted to see how it was shaping up anyways. That all said, the ATI card works well for me. 2.6 kernel driver port of ATI's latest driver: http://zinx.xmms.org/misc/tmp/fglrx-module-3.2.5-for-2.6.0-test.tar.gz Here's how a friend of mine setup the open source ATI drivers. http://lists.netisland.net/archives/plug/plug-2003-07/msg00462.html hope that helps. I've found that the ATI drivers work well. The nvidia drivers would cause lockups in X once in a while. So far things seem more stable. -- Mental ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) "The Torah... The Gospels... Has anyone any experience with it with Debian? I will probably be installing unstable on it. From what I have read the ATI Radeon cards do not seem to be well supported. Any suggestions will be gratefully appreciated Sebastian Department of CHemistry Ohio Northern University Ada, OH 45810 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Pim Bliek wrote: Hi, Anyone else using zope? I am trying to get it to work on Sid with Apache 1.3. Troubles I have: - I cannot compile pcgi because I don't have the Apache sources, so I went without it. - I try to reach the zserver itself directly on port 9673, but it does nothing also nothing in the logs... Can someone with a succesfull setup please post his configs? Thanx! Pim I have been having the same problem. I havew been trying to get Zope running for about a week. No progress. In the past it simply worked when installed. The current version seems to get the server running on port 9673 but I can not get to the manage login screen. I keep getting the same message "connection refused. I think this is a bug as I can not locate a permission problem. How would it affect if I don't upgrade the > kernel to 2.4 at all? You can run woody with a 2.2 kernel as well (it's still the default kernel for new woody installations) However, some features aren't supported by 2.2 kernels. Furthermore, a recent 2.4 kernel will be faster more stable. So I'd recommend you to install a 2.4 kernel manually after upgrading the system. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The woody version, 1.4-2, uses /etc/default/dnsmasq instead of /etc/dnsmasq.conf and doesn't appear to have most of these options. -- Pigeon Be kind to pigeons Get my GPG key here: http://pgp.mit.edu:11371/pks/lookup?op=get&search=0x21C61F7F pgp0.pgp Description: PGP signature

I just added ] as a quoting indicator to my .slrnrc for someone, but at least that was visible. I'm following the list in slrn, it treats text as text and it strips attributes. Solved by upgrading cupsys-client/server/bsd... and hpijs (for a HP Deskjet) to sarge (cups 1.14). dealing with testing and security
I'm tired of the stale nature of stable. Last weekend I upgraded to testing. I'm wondering what is the recommended method of dealing with security updates for testing? Should I downgrade and only upgrade the few packages that I want newer versions of, like mailman, spamassassin, and bind.
