I have had the best luck with ASUS and MSI MBs.

My advice is, if you are forced into getting not just a new board, but a
new CPU as well, for a desktop machine, then you would be better off
with rethinking the brand loyalty.

Right now, much as I hate to admit it, Intel X58/Core i7 is the way to
go. The Core i7 920 is a very good good price v. performance choice,
and it overclocks very well. I like the ASUS P6T Deluxe V2, a Core i7
board I have successfully installed 5 times, so far. Debian runs fine,
with a recent enough kernel.

The down side is, the memory is DDR3, so you can't reuse the old sticks.
But, you can put in six of them! Garden-variety sticks from OCZ or
somewhere will take it to 12GB, or you can pay a premium, go with 4 Gig
sticks, and have 24GB.

(If you like to overclock, though, stick with three memory sticks. Yes,
three, not two or four. The LGA 1366 processors---i.e., Core i7s---are
triple-channel, they have an onboard memory controller that supports
three memory channels. Anyway, higher clocks on all-slots-filled
configurations are not supported.)

I have installed one GigaByte X58/i7 board, the EX58-UD5, and I dislike
it. Not recommended.

Core i7 boards are somewhat pricy, though. The new P55 chipset is
cheaper, and it supports the new Lynnfield CPU, that is, the core i5
chips. i5 just has double-channel support, so less costly to get
started. But I have no experience with them.

The point being that an Intel chip is, in my opinion, the current
overall winner.

On some of your vmlinux lines in your menu.lst you have the word
"single". That boots you into single-user mode, that you exit from by
hitting Ctrl-D.

Remove just the word "single" and you should be good to go.

Reliable remote logging with rsyslog on lenny

2009-07-19 Thread Cameron Hutchison
I'm trying to set up a couple of boxes that both run lenny (stable) for
remote logging. I have installed rsyslog on both boxes. One is to be the
log server, the other I want to log remotely to the log server.

According to the package description of rsyslog, it does "reliable
syslog over TCP". According to the rsyslog homepage, this reliable
logging is RELP and can be enabled on the server like this:

$ModLoad imrelp
$InputRELPServerRun 2514

and on the client like this:

*.* :omrelp:192.168.0.1:2514

(where 192.168.0.1 is the address of the log server)

I cannot get this to work.

>From what I can tell with netstat, rsyslogd is not listening on port
2514 on the server. The package also looks like it does not contain the
modules imrelp and omrelp - but I'm not sure about this. There aren't
any .so files for them in the module directory, but they may be built in
instead.

How do I enable the reliable logging feature of rsyslog?

Whatever you do, stay and run away from Gigabyte. They make the
crappiest boards I've seen (two out of three over the years totally
broken, the third one is defective and troublesome), their support
sucks, and they have a huge, massive, unbelievable bug in the BIOS

I made the mistake to buy a Gigabyte though I knew better, but it was
cheaper ... I have the buggy BIOS (they are using the same in a lot of

disks and is unable to recognize two my SATA disks when AHCI is
enabled. I'm extremely pissed with them and if I had money to spare,
I'd have replaced the board with an MSI board.

Uh-oh, because before reading this, I ordered a GA-MA780G-UD3H.

Not according to Toms Hardware page. He rated them a best buy when I

Lucky Don Quixote :), obviously you never have been hitten by fsck not
being able to cope with a broken FS. In such a situation the machine
automagically boots into single user mode.

Maybe it should be made clearer that you're at your own risk when
hitting C-d. I'd never do that on a production box or when the
FS contains valuable data.

remount removeable drive in Lenny - how?

2009-07-19 Thread Paul E Condon
I have no objection to the status of hal as a required part of a
standard desktop installation, but I do have a question as to how best
to deal with a peculiar situation.

I have several USB hard drives (ones with rotating machinery inside,
not solid state 'disks'). From time to time I need to perform format
maintenance on one of them. In order to do this, I look in /dev to see
what device name has been assigned to the drive, umount it, and do
whatever - e2fsck, tune2fs, etc. But when I'm finish doing
maintenance, how to I remount it without pulling the USB cable,
waiting a while, and reinserting the cable? Is there a console command
that I can type that avoids the extra wear on the fragile little
connectors and plugs? I'm looking for something that retriggers the
look-up of volume label and the creation of a mount-point in /media as
was there before I started mucking about.

Or is there another way to do the maintenance without umounting? (not
likely, I think)

The actions you listed change neither the partition layout nor
filesystem UUIDs, so you should be able to just mount it again, using
the same device name or UUID as before.

But, for hal-mounted devices, the umount also deletes the mount-point.
If I manually create a mount-point, which I must do prior to
attempting a manual mount, then the next time hal mounts this HD, it
creates a differently named mount point. I find this to be
unclean. And, also a lot of typing. And periodic housekeeping to keep
/media reasonably uncluttered.

I've faced the same problem yesterday, and I was not able to solve
it. When I mount/umount manually a device, I am able to mount it
again. But if I mount it in kde, and then ask to safely remove device,
then the device files pointing to the partitions are no longer in /dev/;
and even the device pointing to the whole disk (e.g. /dev/sdf) raises an
error when I do a simple `file -s /dev/sdf`.

I want to install nagios3 on my debian4 etch system, but "apt-get

I just to build the dpkg. So I think getting all source packages of
build-dep is the first step. Then I'll build and install the build-dep and
finally build dpkg. Is this the way to go?

Why not? I thought installation image should prepare all essential packages
which definitely includes dpkg if it's a Debian image, right?

A GNU/Linux operating system has most drivers already incorporated in
the Linux kernel. Try a Debian Live CD[1] to see if your hardware is
recognized correctly and report back if something doesn't work.

I thought you are building binary image file with CLFS. This is not
Debian installer nor this is any Debian system. So dpkg is not required.

Have you done this? As I found this now, it is a nice document.

You should also read http://trac.cross-lfs.org/ and their book.

You do not get single line answer if there is book for it.

I think you also need to learn some basics of Debian system by reading
Debian documentations.

You basically redeliver mbox to an account where you set up procmail or
maildrop fileter with script to unpack mail such as munpack(1).

For redeliver:

For maildrop:

laptop double-suspends (sleeps on resume first time) if I use fn-hotkey

2009-07-19 Thread Jon Dowland
Hi folks,

I have this really weird and mildly annoying issue I cannot pin down. When I
suspend my laptop (thinkpad x40 running sid) using the Fn+F4 hotkey (which
sends an ACPI sleep event), my laptop sleeps. However, on trying to wake it
up, once wakeup is complete (I see a flash of gnome-screensaver) the laptop
sleeps again. This happens every time and exactly twice.

If I use another method to sleep (call pm-suspend or use gnome-power-manager's
buttons or the gnome menu) it does not occur.

Can anyone suggest where to look? I was hoping I would see either one utility
reporting more than one ACPI event in a log somewhere, or more than one
utility reporting handling one ACPI event, but I can't see anything at all :(

Probably won't even squawk. IIRC, scanning for VGs is done during the boot

You *may* have to run 'vgscan && vgchange -ay', but that should be enough.

Well, that didn't work...

ia32-apt-get or libc6-i386 on amd64, debian sid?

2009-07-19 Thread MRH
I'm pretty confused with the latest changes in sid on amd64. Do ia32-*
packages replace -i386 packages or they are alternatives? After
'upgrading' to ia32-apt-get I lost wine (however I found there is
ia32-wine, which unfortunately is not displayed in synaptic and I'm not
sure if it replaces wine, then what will happen if there will be 64bit
wine?), picasa, googleearth and some other packages.

Should I purge ia32-* and reinstall libc-i386 or wait?

Then what I understood reading ia32-apt-get doc and some previous post
it is supposed to be updated / upgraded separately to the apt-get and I
assume it won't be included / supported in synaptic?

RE: [Semi-OT] Need advice on AMD mobo

2009-07-19 Thread David Christensen
Mark Allums wrote:
> ... rethinking the brand loyalty.
> The point being that an Intel chip is, in my opinion, the current

I was an Intel guy for many years, after having been burned on no-name
motherboards. Intel's products and technical support were top-shelf 10+ years
ago. Then I got a CC820 board (recalled). Then they started releasing buggy
BIOS updates (D945GNT). Then their technical support got arrogant. Then Intel
shut down their open technical support forums. Etc..

So, I switched to AMD and Asus/NVIDIA about ~3 years ago. They work with
Windows; mostly. But, Linux or BSD is another story. The reality is that
there's more to a computer system than the CPU -- you need a motherboard,
chipset, memory, video, sound, Ethernet, serial, parallel, USB, Firewire,
eSATA, etc.. Assuming that the hardware is done right, much of that stuff
requires software -- e.g. kernel support and/or device drivers. Outdated,
reverse-engineered, and/or minimalist software might work for a plaything or
headless ancillary server, but forget about production servers, graphical
desktops, or even thin clients.

Companies that get in bed with Microsoft and pay for Windows Hardware Quality
Labs (WHQL) testing ensure that their products work with Windows. (NVIDIA
didn't/doesn't; therefore the problems.) But there is no single WHQL
equivalent for free/ open-source software (FOSS). So, it's up to the vendors
and the projects, and they don't have the Microsoft Windows tax to supplement
the costs. Intel supports FOSS -- paying employees/ contractors to work on it,
giving presentations/ classes, releasing technical information, releasing
source code drivers, etc.. Can someone name another major PC hardware vendor
who does the same? (If so, please do; I'd like to know.)

The end result is that, in general, Intel stuff is better supported in the FOSS
world. There are always exceptions; if you're willing to do the homework, get
out your wallet, and/or do the integration/ testing. I prefer a fast, easy,
and successful out-of-the-box experience, so my next motherboard and CPU are
likely to be Intel.

Ron Johnson wrote:
> I looked into Intel, but I'm trying to reuse the CPU and RAM.

old stuff until it drops or becomes useless, sell or give away the leftovers:

and save the money for my next machine.

1st thing: if you don't already have sshd installed, try: apt-get
install openssh-server (that probably should start it as well)

If it's just not running, try: /etc/init.d/ssh start

Then make sure that your init files are set up properly:
- check /etc/inittab to see what your default runlevel is (probably 2)
- check /etc/rc2.d (or whatever your default is) for a file something
like S16ssh (to start ssh at boot time)
- if it doesn't exist, then you need to install an init file (sorry, I
forget the magic incantation to create init files)

Here's another thought -- what happens if you boot to
single-user mode (or to a rescue disk) and re-run "mkswap" on
that swap partition? This ought to blitz the troublesome
resume image that's on there, and possibly allow the system to
boot cleanly.

Long time ago, I did something like this. I first converted the mp3 to wav,
increased the amplitude, then converted the .wav file back to .mp3. I
forgot the tools, commands to achieve this. Sorry! Google might be of some
help.

I've used AMD kit and compatible chipsets since the K6-2 days, and
nvidia cards (with both nv and nvidia drivers) almost as long. This
ASRock mobo is the only one that I've had trouble with.

It's not even the CPU that I'm having trouble with, but the BIOS and
chipset. Finally I got it to boot: went to watch TV for a few
hours, and when I came back, the board recognized all my drives.
Even still, though, when I reboot, it just sits at the BIOS splash
screen. Must wait an hour or so before it gets beyond that point.
I suspect overheating, but that doesn't make much sense, because the
system is otherwise very stable.

Do Intel DualCores (E8400) support NUMA?

No. All cores access the same RAM over the same paths.

  Do you need special hardware,
like a special mainboard supporting NUMA, to benefit from this
feature?

Yes. Really expensive server-oriented multi-*socket* boards with
DIMM slots for each CPU socket.

Do these CPUs support NUMA? It seems to me that leaving it
disabled is better in my case, and the kernel help also says that it's
probably better not to enable it if you don't have more than two
CPUs/cores.

Now if I had a quad core CPU instead, would I better enable NUMA? Or
if I had an AMD instead of Intel, would I turn it on? Or should I
leave it turned on?

You still only have 1 CPU chip, so NUMA is irrelevant.

I was an Intel guy for many years, after having been burned on no-name

ago. Then I got a CC820 board (recalled). Then they started releasing buggy
BIOS updates (D945GNT). Then their technical support got arrogant. Then Intel
shut down their open technical support forums. Etc..

I am not advocating Intel motherboards, just Intel CPU + Northbridge.

I recommend a non-Intel board, the ASUS P6T Deluxe V2.

ASUS is not a "no-name" board. Dell, HP, and others use ASUS OEM bords

Whenever I find myself trying to do something like this, I stop and
consider if my database design is optimal.

You can store an IPv4 address as a 32-bit unsigned integer, and you
can store an IPv4 network as one of those together with a prefix
between 0 and 32. You can then do operations on these.

However...

Perl's Net::Netmask module helps:

$ perl -MNet::Netmask -e '$block = new Net::Netmask("192.168.0.0/23"); print
join("\n", $block->enumerate(24)), "\n";'
192.168.0.0
192.168.1.0

After adding some validation, you could replace the trailing '.0'
with '.%'.

Cheers,

I do the same thing.

Maybe it's just superstition, but it's fairly rare to lose a whole
hard drive, but fairly common to corrupt a filesystem.

Such corruption usually happens when you (intentionally) write to a
filesystem. It could happen otherwise, because of some wildly buggy
kernel code writing outside the proper partition, but I would expect
that to be rare.

So if you have separate filesystems, /tmp, /var and /home are likely
to get corrupted, but /boot and / aren't so likely. In the event of
this kind of corruption, you should still be able to boot.

I found I was able to run "apt-get -f install" twice and be able to

However, now I'm finding that Emacs and Firefox (Iceweasel) die with

Has anyone seen these problems as a result of updating these packages?

I use lvm on an external USB disk, and I also get those messages ('read

What seems to work for me is '/etc/init.d/lvm2 stop' followed by
'/etc/init.d/lvm2 start'.
I thought of that, but what about internal LVs? Wouldn't you have to
first umount them?

I currently only use lvm on my external disk, so I don't have to worry
about that. But I assumed that even if one did, it would still be
better, if not quite as simple, to do that, than to reboot.

True, true. Especially since my internal LV doesn't have anything vital
like /usr on it.

The last entry ('003') appeared only after plugging the iphone to a usb port.
Everything else remained the same.
Thanks again

That doesn't mean that they are still good like they used to be. I've
seen 10--15 out of 25 Asus boards, all the same model, giving Windoze
XP trouble to access the disk. It could take 15 minutes and several
tries when users turned on their computers in the morning before they
could use them. --- I've had an Asus board myself and the fan on it
started rattling after a short time. Otherwise, it wasn't too bad,
except that there was no way to update the BIOS.

Really expensive server-oriented multi-*socket* boards with

You still only have 1 CPU chip, so NUMA is irrelevant.

Thanks! Interestingly, you can turn it on nonetheless, and it works

That's because the kernel doesn't just use stuff simply because you
compile it in. Search thru dmesg and you might see something
enlightening regarding NUMA.

That depends on which way you want to go. If you want to try the
backported version, add
| deb http://www.backports.org/debian etch-backports main contrib non-free

See http://backports.org/ for more information.

I think we are just waiting on something.
I have about 20 packages that I am holding, until the situation gets sorted
out and I can upgrade without loosing anything.

Not sure what you can do since you already went ahead.
I guess either wait until you can install wine again, or manually downgrade
a score of packages and reinstall wine now.

Just be sure you're raising the correct control on your mixer. It's happened
to me that it wasn't the volume that needed raising but rather the PCM
setting that did. I don't know if that's your problem but it's worth
checking.
