One could try the bullseye-backports kernel(s) first, if the kernel is
the only piece that needs to be newer.

However, if a newer X server, Mesa or whatever else is also needed, then
it might be worth trying to run testing.

According to: https://ubuntu.com/certified/202204-30215

This system was tested with 20.04 LTS, running the 5.14.0-1033-oem kernel.

If you got the X1 Carbon Gen 10 then you will likely need to install
Debian Testing as Debian 11 only has the 5.10 Kernel version.

Cambiar region a una pelicula en DVD

2022-12-05 Thread CAMP

Would that not require adding a head to the headless server?

Does the wireless operate without a module to drive it? What does it
spend its time doing, ie what would it transmit, or be listening for?
I was under the impression that just soft-blocking was enough to stop
radios from operating, hence airplane mode (though it is a mystery to
me why even the FM radio in my mobile phone won't operate in airplane
mode).

Lurching OT: anyone here use nextradio on their mobile phone?

Cheers,

It may be easier to look in the BIOS/UEFI and see if there's a way to
disable Bluetooth and Wifi. Then you don't have to worry about drivers
loading for chips that are no longer powered on.

I often disable Bluetooth and Wifi for machines in my house that have
a full time wired connection. There's no need to turn on all the

While looking for something else not too long ago, I tripped over
"apt-mark showinstall". LOVE IT! Very handy when other searches aren't
working because you're not sure of the package name. If you do know a
piece of the package name, you can...

$ apt-mark showinstall | grep

That's done with no asterisk (wild card).

Be forewarned, I just sent mine to a text file that ended up being
1,787 lines. Each line represents a single, separate package ready to
be pondered individually.

Then I would blacklist it. Create a blacklist-bluetooth.conf file in
/lib/modprobe.d/ and containing

  blacklist btusb

or whichever modules (one per line), before removing it/them.

What is a side-grade in this context? I'd strongly advise against trying
to replace the APT sources with Debian's and then trying to switch with an
`apt-get dist-upgrade`. Instead, I'd suggest the following course of
action:

* Create an image backup of the installed Ubuntu such that it is restorable

* Install Debian stable replacing the existing Ubuntu.
If it works fine, stop there. If not, try backports or even Testing to
see if it is an issue regarding hardware being too new :)

* If all fails, the image allows reverting to Ubuntu easily enough.

Why not simply, in that context, install Debian as a dual boot option,
so that the bootloader, on system boot, offers the user the options of
which of the two OS's to boot?

How do I kill bluetooth dead and make this stop?

I do not need help making bluetooth load correctly. The machine does
not need or want bluetooth connectivity. If bluetooth were running
successfully, the first and last thing I would do with bluetooth would
be to disable it.

The question is how to make it stop attempting to load bluetooth in the
first place.

Based on some web searches, I have already tried:

- Checking the output of `dpkg --get-selections` for any package names
mentioning "blue", "tooth", or "bt" - there aren't any, so the obvious
solution of `apt-get remove --purge bluetooth` doesn't appear to be an
  option

- `rmmod btusb` - this has no apparent effect, probably because
bluetooth.target loads the mod back in before I even have time to run
`lsmod` and see if it's still there

- `systemctl X bluetooth.target` for X in (stop, disable, mask) - this
has also had no apparent effect; even with the target stopped,
disabled, and masked, the system still keeps reaching it and trying to
  read the Intel version information

- grepping for the text 'bluetooth.target' in all files in /etc/systemd/
and /usr/lib/systemd/ (so I could find out what 'wants
bluetooth.target') - no matches were found

That /was/ the idea, if and when the device woke up
thinking it was a SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad.

And, on the occasions when it woke up thinking it
was a Synaptics TM2722-001, you'd expect to get:

$ xinput enable "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad"
unable to find device SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad
  $  xinput enable "Synaptics TM2722-001"
  $

After all, the one device is not going to have both
names at the same time, unless some sort of aliasing
mechanism was in play.

The workaround was to save you the bother of testing
between the two names. To do the job properly, your
script would have to be dynamic, finding the touchpad
before en/disabling it. My own script is outlined in

https://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2022/10/msg00358.html

and it handles whatever devices are plugged into whichever
of my computers at the instant it runs. (The names don't
vary here, but my devices do get swapped around.)

Cheers,
David.

I'm very familiar and comfortable with Debian (was happy with 'testing' for a
long time, but have lately reverted to 'stable'). And, although I'm a rare
participant on this list, I enjoy the lurk and would presumably need to go
elsewhere if I had questions about my Ubuntu experience.

If you have been using Debian for a long time, by all means, stay with it.

Ubuntu is a derivative and many things feel similar, but for an experienced
Debian user there are tons of minor obstacles that you encounter if you want
to do certain things on Ubuntu. Differences in Network Interfaces
configuration come to mind. Also, Ubuntu likes to distribute certain
applications as “snap” which is replacing traditional Ubuntu packages for
e.g. Firefox. More differences exist of course but these are my top two :)

I'm not whining, I was merely telling. There must be quite a few people
using AMD cards who must have been running into the same problem.

Debian stable is not usually adding support for new hardware during its
lifecycle. Hence the standard way to deal with such things is to either buy
hardware that is already old enough to be supported by Debian stable or to
install a newer release/kernel. A new kernel has been suggested in the
thread already and is a “standard thing” to try out in case of newer-than-
distribution hardware. As are backported firmware blobs if you use them... :)

For instance, I am using Debian stable right now on a (smaller) Dell
Workstation with an “AMD Radeon Pro W5500” which is old enough to be
supported by it out of the box already. When I bought it, I installed the
back-then Debian Testing Bullseye specifically because I knew that the
stable distribution might have been too old (and it was shortly before the
release of Bullseye anyways).

Since I needed Vulkan support and enhanced GPU performance for certain
(less-important) applications, I installed some parts of the proprietary
driver package. This is not officially supported and I expect it to be prone
to breakage upon upgrades etc.

I can't very well debug this any further since I need the machine
working, so I installed Fedora instead, and I also have currently an
NVIDIA card installed.

After experiencing Debian, I'm no longer really inclined to use it on
workstations. I'm re-considering Gentoo, but that has had overwhelming
problems in the past with updating which I don't want to have again.

If Fedora works for you now, you could also just stay with it until any
reason to switch to Debian pops up or a good chance to switch manifests?
IOW: No need to rush things while the computer is working as expected :)

Unless you keep upgrading to the newest hardware, it may also be a good
point in time to switch to a new Debian stable that is newer than the
hardware once that is released? Using a new release rather than only a newer
kernel has the advantage of coming with a newer graphics stack
(X11/Mesa/etc.) that may also be relevant for the GPU to function properly.

In my experience, Debian works well across various workstation brands
(HP, Dell, Fujitsu) but here, the hardware was often older than the
software.

You didn't say how you got rid of some of the tooltips, so I'll guess
here.

This is after a bit of searching on the Internet. I have not
experimented with any of this.

XFCE is in the process of moving from GTK 2 to GTK 3. Also, some GTK
programs outside of XFCE are GTK 2, others GTK 3. This situation will
probably continue for years.

The solution for GTK 2 is well known.
https://docs.xfce.org/xfce/xfdesktop/advanced I will guess that that is
how you got rid of some of them.

GTK 3, not so well known, but there are some things you can try.

"happy" is a personal judgement, so I'll just go with mine - I like
Debian's philosophy & I don't like Ubuntu's

https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2018/02/ubuntu-data-collection-opt-out
Since few (if any) users would choose to opt-in to share this sort
of data, Canonical is making participation in the scheme entirely
opt-out.

https://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2012/11/01/ubuntu-search-amazon-privacy/
... users can choose not to search Amazon if they want, while future
releases will make it easier to opt-out of searching across third
party services

I'd rather opt-out of using anything from a company that does opt-out
data collection.
... and yeah.. I still use firefox, so that's clearly a preference
instead of a hard rule.

And there's been talk about a Canonical IPO for ages - eg

from 2015

and now
https://techcrunch.com/2022/04/21/canonical-now-hopes-to-ipo-in-2023/

My assumption is that they're going to have to do more to generate
income and I'd rather read about how they've monetized their users
than find out first-hand.

Hi Timothy,

in case this Radeon video card is integrated in CPU, would you share
your experience with it as usability and performance?

Kind regards
Georgi

The integrated Radeon Graphics performs great.  I play openMW, TES IV
Oblivion and TES V Skyrim with CrossOver Office on the highest video
settings and they run like a champ! Without the Non-Free blobs you only
get a resolution of 1024x768. With the non-free binary blobs you get
1920x1080. HDMI Audio does not function on Debian 11 due to the kernel
and drivers being too old. Everything works well with Debian Testing and
Non-Free Drivers. I transcode a lot of video into Matroska Theora format
and the transcoding speed is great.

Thank you for the provided information!

Kind regards
Georgi

I know that wasn't a serious suggestion, but thought I would point out
that 'unstable' (AKA 'sid') is the bleeding edge in-development
distribution and 'experimental' doesn't contain a full distribution,
it's just a place for developers to distribute experimental packages.

I have a Ryzen 7 4700U 8 core processor with Radeon Graphics. I am

This Laptop requires non-free firmware for: WiFi, Sound, Video etc. As
long as you do not mind running binary blobs I recommend it. The price
is good for the performance.

I think you need around the 5.15 kernel.

It was fully updated and the amdgpu module would load after forcing it,
yet it didn't work right.  This is something that should --- and does
with Fedora --- work right out of the box.

Fedora is a bleeding edge distribution. As such it's more comparable to
Debian Unstable or maybe Testing than to Debian Stable (like currently
Debian 11 "Bullseye").

Radeon RX 6000 series was released last year. I doubt it was possible to
use one of these with Red Hat Enterprise Linux ootb in the beginning of
this year before RHEL 9 was released. ;-)

Perhaps, the original poster should install and use, Debian Experimental?

It seems fitting...
