With aptitude: http://tanguy.ortolo.eu/blog/article8/uninstall-meta-package Unfortunately this suggestion didn't work. I had already marked Evolution packages as manually installed. I haven't read the link above, but marking Evolution as manually installed would not help you. Imagine the following: Package: gnome Depends: gnome-core, evolution, etc. The package 'gnome' is just a metapackage meant to pull all the others. If you try to uninstall evolution the package manager will have to uninstall the gnome metapackage as well (because the dependency is broken). If the other packages are marked as automatically installed it will want to remove them as well (not needed). What I would suggest is (the order matters): - mark evolution as automatically installed - mark any component of gnome you want to keep as manually installed - remove the gnome metapackage If there are no circular Depends or Recommends this should also remove evolution, but if it didn't you will have to do it manually. Beware, this is not tested, you might need to adjust it a bit, but the principle is the same. Also aptitude's visual mode is best suited for this. Press 'g' once and you will be presented with all proposed actions. Go through the list and press '+' on every package you want to keep. Thanks Andre. I don't use or care for aptitude interactive -- I use it from the command line. :) However your advice is good, and worked. Didn't realize when I wrote the 1st email that the Gnome metapackage it wanted to remove was/appears to be the classic version, which I don't use. So removing it, wasn't an issue as I use Gnome-Shell. We may as well put its advice here: Well, there is a solution: marking all the dependencies of the meta-package as manually installed, that is, faking that you installed them explicitly Aptitude is able to do that with its powerful search functions: aptitude unmarkauto '?reverse-depends(gnome) | ?reverse-recommends(gnome)' aptitude unmarkauto '?reverse-depends(gnome-core) | ?reverse-recommends(gnome-core)' aptitude unmarkauto '?reverse-depends(gnome-desktop-environment) | ?reverse-recommends(gnome-desktop-environment)' This works for me to purge Evolution without removing other needed software. The solution to this problem is to use a udev-created symbolic link. In the example configuration file above, /dev/disk/by-id/ata-IBM- DBCA-203240_HP0HPL43952 is a udev-created symbolic link to the MBR of the (normal) boot drive, regardless of which driver is used for IDE hard disks and regardless of how many disk drives are in the system, the order in which they are discovered, or what the boot device is. That's a good suggestion, but I noticed that the example you gave has: boot=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-IBM-DBCA-203240_HP0HPL43952 root=UUID=04db5929-51e6-424a-ac5b-a592b96b9d04 I.e., they are not using the same thing. Of course not! The boot configuration file record points to the Master Boot Record in the above example. The root configuration file record points to a particular partition on the hard disk which has an ext2/ext3 file system on it. They are not the same. They are not supposed to be the same. I think you have some conceptual errors in your mind that you need to resolve. As said before, it is not that I can't boot, I can always boot just fine, but half of the time the boot process will drop to (initramfs) PANIC mode. I.e., it is always the root= boot option that give me the trouble, yet, I don't like using UUID, because, just as you said: Warning: reformatting a partition normally changes the uuid, unless the existing uuid is explicitly specified as an option when formatting. Thus, commands such as mkfs (and its derivatives) and mkswap will normally change the uuid, which in turn will change the udev-created symbolic link in /dev/disk/by-uuid, which in turn may necessitate changes to /etc/ lilo.conf. Can I use something like root=ID=ata-IBM-DBCA-203240_HP0HPL43952? I remember nothing worked well, so I reverted to the (now troublesome) safe /dev/sdXn. /dev/sdXn is *not* safe. That's the whole point. If your boot loader is LILO, the only safe root file system specifications are one of these two forms: root=UUID=... root=LABEL=... You must refer to the root file system by its uuid or by its disk label, if there is one. Yes, reformatting a partition will normally change the uuid and label, unless the old uuid and label are explicitly specified when formatting. But that's under your control. And this is something that does not change from one boot to the next. Device assignments can. Make sure that you use this technique in your boot loader configuration file, /etc/fstab, and /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume. (/etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume is going to point to a swap partition.) If you have to change /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume, you must rebuild your initial RAM file system afterwards, since this file is included in the initial RAM file system. update-initramfs -uk $(uname -r) And obviously, if you change your boot loader configuration file, such as /etc/lilo.conf, you must rerun your boot loader installer afterwards. lilo -- .''`. Before the HD crash and subsequent installation of the OS on the new HD the microphone setting (that worked allowing a video call) was: USB Device 0x46d:0x807, USB Audio (hw:2,0) Now, in the reinstalled Skype version, that worked before, on the new OS. there are a number of audio settings, the one most similar to the one that worked is: USB Device 0x46d:0x807, USB Audio (hw:1,0) note the only difference. Debian Wheezy Grub Problem
My main Linux computer (64bit CPU) is about six or seven years old now and has had a number of distributions running. As I haven't had any luck with upgrades, I've always done a complete installation. Currently the Grub boot menu has a number of choices: openSUSE Advanced options for openSUSE openSUSE 12.1 (x86_64) Advanced options for openSUSE 12.1 (x86_64) Debian GNU/Linux (6.0.5) Advanced options for Debian GNU/Linux (6.0.5) Debian GNU/Linux (6.0.4) Advanced options for Debian GNU/Linux (6.0.4) There are a number of things that I find puzzling. First of all, the most recent installation is Debian Wheezy/Testing (7.0), and, in fact, WebMin tells me that the installed Operating system is Debian Linux 7.0. In order to boot into what is now my default Linux, installed on /dev/hda I have to select the seventh option of the menu which is mislabeled as 6.0.4. I had successfully installed some of the distributions on other than /dev/hda, but the last several installation have been on the Primary Master HD. The computer boots well with the seventh entry in the menu, which is not the default. This is rather annoying. I have become thoroughly confused by the information I've found about grub2. I am not a hardware person and am rather loathe to make any changes to the boot loader, given my current high degree of mental entropy. I thought about switching to lilo and, in fact, tried that out successfully on a laptop running Wheeezy in a VM. When I tried that on the tower /sbin/lilo complained that it couldn't open /etc/lilo.conf, even though I used sudo. Fortunately, my act of desperation didn't render grub inoperable. I would appreciate any insights. Thanks in advance. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? 64 bit Wheezy RAM Limitation
Let me start with a disclaimer - I am not a hardware person! I am using Oracle VirtualBox (v 4.2.6 r82870) as a testbed for Wheezy Testing before upgrading my production linux computer. The software is installed on my 64 bit Dell Inspiron laptop with 8 GB of RAM running MS Win 7 Professional as the primary OS. With a couple of exceptions that I attribute to a less than complete understanding of the VirtualBox environment, Wheezy is performing well. It was with a fair amount of surprise that I discovered, entirely by chance, that according to KInfoCenter that the system is using only 4.47 GB of total physical memory!!! Googling 'Debian Wheezy 64 bit memory limitation' only turn up references to Squeezy and the Debian Handbook doesn't seem to address the issue. I would greatly appreciate being pointed to any sources of information about this issue. Thanks in advance.

Re: Installing a backported kernel on Squeeze at an early stage.
On Sat, 29 Dec 2012 06:00:50 -0500 (EST), Lisi Reisz wrote: Happy New Year everyone! I have a problem which I know someone else had recently on the list and there was a (slightly complicated) solution. But I am not succeeding in finding the thread. PEBKAC, obviously, since I am sure that it is there. I want to install Squeeze on a box in/on which the on board network card is not recognised in Squeeze. The simple solution is just put a different network in the box temporarily while I install. But this box is for a present, it is black, it comes without spare blanking plates, and those already there have to be snapped out, and cannot be replaced. I am not keen to spoil the looks as it is a present. So could any kind soul point me at the relevant thread? It was fairly recent. I don't recall the thread to which you are referring, Lisi, but from the subject line it sounds like the standard squeeze kernel does not contain the necessary drivers you need for the built-in network card but a later kernel does. Is that right? Yet you want to install squeeze and not wheezy? I believe if it were me, I'd install wheezy, using the latest wheezy installer. wheezy is already in the frozen state, and will probably become the stable release in a couple of months anyway. My wife's computer, which until recently ran squeeze, recently had a problem. The version of iceweasel which comes with squeeze couldn't handle some upgrades that Yahoo made to their web mail interface. Fields were overlapping. It was apparently a bug in iceweasel or a new feature that the Yahoo site was exploiting that was not supported in the old version of iceweasel. I suppose that I could have installed a newer version of iceweasel from backports, but due to the age of squeeze, I decided to upgrade to wheezy. Problem solved. As an alternative, you might try a PCMCIA / PC card network adapter, if your computer has a slot for these devices, or perhaps a USB network adapter that squeeze supports. Installing squeeze with the wheezy installer might work, since the latest wheezy installer presumably uses a kernel that supports the built-in network adapter. But then, after installation, you will need to boot your system in rescue mode to install a backported kernel, and the procedure will be non-standard (i.e. wget and dpkg -i, probably). In short, I'd install wheezy if I were you. -- .''`. Stephen Powell : :' : `. `'` `- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Remember, for cases where the module source package is designed to work with kernel-package, you don't need to build or install a headers package in order to build the modules. That's one of the qualities I like. I think it's stupid to require that the user build and install a headers package when the entire kernel source tree is already installed. Here is a summary of the permission environment that must exist before you attempt to unpack the source as a non-root user: (1) The directory /usr/src must be owned by user root and by group src. (2) The group (src) must have read, write, and execute permissions on /usr/src. (3) The group (src) must have the set group id permission on /usr/src. (4) Your non-root userid must be a member of group src. (5) The output of the groups command, when issued by your non-root userid, must list src as one of the groups. How can I determine the chip set? The KDE Info Center doesn't list video cards and the nVidia Grpahic Finder doesn't run in Linux. Thanks in advance. -- Stephen P. All I need to do is build everything as it is out of the box ACCEPT for a couple of patches to usb/audio AND the two config options. Of course the revision string must be right otherwise there are conflicts with linux-headers and DKMS. Building a custom kernel is not a simple procedure. Period. Of course, the more changes you make, the more complicated the procedure is. But even making a simple change involves doing a lot of things. If you have out-of-kernel-source-tree modules you need to build, and there is no Debian source package for it that is designed to work with kernel-package, then you will probably need to build custom headers, as well as a custom kernel. The document to which I referred explains how to do this, but the short answer is to use the kernel_headers target in addition to the kernel_image target. For example: fakeroot make-kpkg ... kernel_image kernel_headers Note that when building a headers package you must run the entire make-kpkg command under fakeroot: you can't use the --rootcmd fakeroot option in this case. -- .''`. Library Problem
Although I have used linux since before the RedHat Mother's Day release I am not an OS type person. I have just installed the 64 bit Debian 6.05 and am encountering problems which I am reasonably sure are due to library problems. The error message that I get for a number of applications, most recently Opera, is: Gtk-Message: Failed to load module canberra-gtk-module: /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/modules/libcanberra-gtk-module.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64 I presume that the error message means that there is a missing 32 bit library on my 64 bit system. Getting 3D graphics support out of my ATI Rage XL video chip?
Hello, list. I've recently installed Debian Wheezy on a new (to me) computer with an ATI Rage XL video chip. Here is an excerpt from the output of lspci -nn -vv. (Line wraps have been inserted to keep well within the customary 80-column limit.) 05:03.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Rage XL [1002:4752] (rev 27) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) The X server auto-selects the ati driver, which in turn selects the mach64 driver. the mach64 driver identifies the card in /var/log/Xorg.0.log as ... ATI 3D Rage XL or XC graphics controller detected Chip type 4752 GR, version 7, foundry TSMC, class 0, revision 0x00 So the chip does have 3D capabilities. But when the X server attempts to activate 3D acceleration, I get the following error: [drm] failed to load kernel module mach64 and the driver reverts to 2D acceleration only. I've done quite a bit of internet searching this morning, and it appears that it is, at least in theory, possible to enable 3D acceleration; but it is not a trivial task. Here's one link that I've found: http://www.allquests.com/question/1501572-4/HOWTO-enable-3d-acceleration-w-Rage-Mobility-mach64.html But this involves manual compilation and not using Debian packages. From other search results, it appears that there was at one time a Debian package called drm-modules-source, which existed in experimental back in the days of Lenny, but this package appears to have disappeared. Before I get knee-deep in this, I thought I'd ask the list if there's a better way. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is there a Debian package I can use? -- .''`. I work on IBM mainframes as my day job. 32-bit IBM mainframes have a 2 GB address limit. (That's because, although the registers for manipulating binary integer numbers are 32-bits wide, the address bus has only 31 address lines.) Physical memory in excess of 2 GB could be installed though. You could use the extra memory in two ways. (1) IBM provides virtual-machine-level virtualization built-in to the hardware microcode, known as PR/SM (Processor Resource / System Manager). This can create what are known as LPARs (Logical PARtitions). You can divide up the physical memory between LPARs, so that each LPAR does not exceed 2G. (2) You can configure some of the memory, either in basic mode or in LPAR mode, as expanded memory. (Think back to the expanded memory boards in the days of DOS.) This in known in IBM lingo as XSTORE memory as opposed to CSTORE memory. Some IBM mainframe operating systems, such as VM, can use XSTORE memory as a high-speed paging device. Then, some applications, such as DB2, can use hyperspaces or VM data spaces as ways to exploit memory above 2 GB. I was aware of these techniques in the mainframe world to exploit memory above 2 GB, but I'm much less familiar with the world of PC CPUs. BTW, IBM's 64-bit machines no longer offer a basic mode. LPAR mode is required on all 64-bit machines, AFAIK. -- .''`. Stephen Powell : :' : `. `'` `- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? The built-in connector holes on the back of the case support A/C power (of course), PS/2 mouse, PS/2 keyboard (small-size PS/2 connectors in both cases), 2 USB ports, 2 serial ports, and one parallel port. In addition, there are knock-out plugs for what looks like a joystick/MIDI port and what looks like line-in, line-out, and microphone connectors for on-board sound. I would have to knock out the metal plugs, but at least the case can handle a mobo with on-board sound. But there are no connector holes for VGA output, DVI output, or an Ethernet jack for a network connection, nor are there knock-out plugs for the same. The power supply connector to the mobo is a 20-pin connector. The case is just not designed to handle modern mobos. I can't even identify the mobo. With no RAM, the BIOS won't initialize. It just beeps at me (about 1 second on and 1 second off). So the BIOS won't tell me what the mobo is. I searched in vain for some form of identification on the mobo silk screen itself, but all I could find was Made in China. Therefore, I don't know what kind of memory it needs. I'm afraid this other system is going to be good for nothing except possibly to be cannibalized for parts. A clue to its age: it has a couple of ISA (or possibly EISA) bus slots on it, in addition to PCI bus slots. And the video card appears to be VESA local bus. -- .''`. But I have no idea what that means, or whether or not it would be relevant in my case. If you need parts for old systems, you simply can't be Ebay. Just about anything you could need is available, and usually really cheap. The older the tech the cheaper. The opposite is normally true when buying from computer retailers. I could not find MCP61 anywhere. Of course, the nvidia-kernel-legacy-71xx-source package exists only in Sid because of build problems. It doesn't work with any release past Lenny. But I searched it too, just for grins, and couldn't find MCP61 on that web page either. By the way, that brings up a pet peeve of mine. I should probably open another thread for it. The Wheezy versions of the above Debian packages (i.e. the on-line web pages which describe them) have *no* description of which chipsets they support. How is one supposed to know which package one needs if one is running Wheezy? The 2D chip is too slow. If you want to use a GUI desktop and a modern browser, visit modern complex websites, play flash videos etc, this system won't be very snappy. That depends on one's level of expectations. I'm currently using a 1 GHz single core, single thread, 32-bit processor and only 512M of RAM. The video driver is nouveau, and for this chipset, it apparently does not support 3D acceleration. So, believe it or not, I expect that the built- in Intel video will be an improvement over what I've got now. If not, installing a separate video card is always an option. You'll also likely need to add a sound card. Actually, no. There is no built-in sound chip on the mobo, but there is a sound card installed in an expansion slot. Apparently, the previous owner was using it as a desktop system, even though it was originally intended as a server. Now, if you plan to use it as a headless server, spend the $50 on the memory and use it as is. Should be fine for some light duty stuff. Actually, I just might do both. I have another computer that someone gave to me that has no RAM at all on it. That's worth mulling over. But I generally like to get hardware when it's at least 3 or 4 years old. That way, I can usually run Debian stable and have all the device drivers work with no problems. I worry particularly about the mobo with an on-board bleeding edge Nvidia video chipset. This thing is about 10 years old, but since it was originally intended to be used as a high-end server, it should make a decent desktop system even today. Next time, I can check myself and not have to bother the list. Once we have the above info, Wikipedia tells us the Northwood chips were all 130nm, and that EM64T wasn't introduced until the 90nm series. The 2.4GHz/512KB/400MHz Prestonia CPUID 0F27 was released in April 2002. Nacona (90nm) with EM64T was introduced over two years later, in June 2004. Hmm. Well, it appears that CPUIDs are not unique. I've done some more research, and it appears that CPUID is just one more piece of evidence, which must be considered along with all the other known characteristics, in order to figure out what one has. One other piece of evidence that I needed, but did not tell the list, is that the chipset is the Intel 7500 chipset, which means that the effective bus speed is 400 MHz. (The actual bus speed is 100 MHz, but the processor operates at Quad bus speed, making the effective bus speed 400 MHz.) The CPU World web site which you pointed me to was very helpful though. After some more research, I believe that this is the right web page (watch out for a wrapped URL): http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Xeon/Intel-Xeon%202.4%20GHz%20-%20RN80532KC056512%20%28BX80532KC2400D%20-%20BX80532KC2400DU%29.html The CPUID of 0F27h means that the S-spec number is either QML8, SL6EP, or SL6K2. QML8 is unlikely, since this is a Quality Sample. The bottom line: it is most definitely a 32-bit CPU. It does have 2 hyperthreads; so a Linux kernel with SMP enabled will see 2 logical processors. Is my processor 32-bit or 64-bit?
Several years ago a friend, who owns his own business, gave me one of his old servers because he knows that computers are my hobby. Basically, I am trying to determine if this is a 64-bit- capable machine or not, and I can't tell. Here's what the BIOS setup program reports for the CPU: Boot Strap Processor Installed Speed: 2.40 GHz Socket Name: BSP Manufacturer:GenuineIntel Version: Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPUID: 0F27 L2 Cache:512 KB I consulted Wikipedia's web page on Intel Processors (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_microprocessors), but was unable to find a processor in the list which met all the criteria (Xeon in the name, speed, and L2 cache). The machine has a Phoenix BIOS, version 1.28, dated 05/22/2003. That may help narrow things down. (For example, it is unlikely that a processor introduced in 2008 would be given a BIOS dated in 2003.) Any ideas? Oh, one other thing. Hyper-Threading was enabled in the BIOS, suggesting that, as viewed by an operating system, the machine has at least two CPUs. But that may not be 100% reliable. The machine has 1 GB of RAM installed. (Two 512M SIMMs and 2 empty SIMM slots.) -- .''`. It's not like there aren't lots of simple editors about, so choose one that fits the work-flow you wish to use. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. I've heard this said by other prior too. Gnome-Shell works fine on an older circa 2005 IBM X41 laptop. I've been running it since it came to SID. The main criteria in my experience is having enough RAM. I have 1.5 Gb and Gnome-Shell runs in about a 300 Mb of ram, and that's with a handful of Gnome-Shell-Extensions to boot. It runs faster and much smoother than Gnome 2 ever did on this laptop! So please lets stop the misinformation. Anything using the GTK2 toolkit is a step backward simply because of the outstanding bugs that will never be fixed. GTK3 and Gnome-Shell are an improvement in terms of speed. If one wants the older look of the GTK2 Gnome interface, it can be had, using Cinnamon. MATE isn't going anywhere in the future because it relies on buggy GTK2. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble?
