I haven't read the link above, but marking Evolution as manually
installed would not help you. Imagine the following:

 Package: gnome
 Depends: gnome-core,
  evolution,
  etc.

The package 'gnome' is just a metapackage meant to pull all the others.
If you try to uninstall evolution the package manager will have to
uninstall the gnome metapackage as well (because the dependency is
broken). If the other packages are marked as automatically installed it
will want to remove them as well (not needed). What I would suggest is
 (the order matters):

 - mark evolution as automatically installed
 - mark any component of gnome you want to keep as manually installed
 - remove the gnome metapackage

If there are no circular Depends or Recommends this should also remove
evolution, but if it didn't you will have to do it manually.

Beware, this is not tested, you might need to adjust it a bit, but the
principle is the same. Also aptitude's visual mode is best suited for
this. Press 'g' once and you will be presented with all proposed
actions. Go through the list and press '+' on every package you want to
 keep.

Thanks Andre. I don't use or care for aptitude interactive -- I use it
from the command line. :) However your advice is good, and worked.
Didn't realize when I wrote the 1st email that the Gnome metapackage it
wanted to remove was/appears to be the classic version, which I don't
use. So removing it, wasn't an issue as I use Gnome-Shell.

All is well, evolution is removed and I'm a happy Debian Stable, laptop
user once again.

You may have done but the blog page doesn't offer that as a technique.
We may as well put its advice here:

Well, there is a solution: marking all the dependencies of the
meta-package as manually installed, that is, faking that you installed
them explicitly Aptitude is able to do that with its powerful search
   functions:

   aptitude unmarkauto '?reverse-depends(gnome) | ?reverse-recommends(gnome)'
   aptitude unmarkauto '?reverse-depends(gnome-core) |
 ?reverse-recommends(gnome-core)'
   aptitude unmarkauto '?reverse-depends(gnome-desktop-environment) |
 ?reverse-recommends(gnome-desktop-environment)'

This works for me to purge Evolution without removing other needed
 software.

Thanks for your effort to help me, mucho appreciated! In the light of
day the packages it was going to remove were non-essential in the
running of gnome-shell. Note to self: Don't do work late in the day.

page, starting with the discussion of the boot configuration file
 record.

http://users.wowway.com/~zlinuxman/lilo.htm

 Indeed!

The solution to this problem is to use a udev-created symbolic link. In
the example configuration file above, /dev/disk/by-id/ata-IBM-
DBCA-203240_HP0HPL43952 is a udev-created symbolic link to the MBR of the
(normal) boot drive, regardless of which driver is used for IDE hard disks
and regardless of how many disk drives are in the system, the order in
which they are discovered, or what the boot device is.

That's a good suggestion, but I noticed that the example you gave has:

boot=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-IBM-DBCA-203240_HP0HPL43952
root=UUID=04db5929-51e6-424a-ac5b-a592b96b9d04

I.e., they are not using the same thing.

Of course not! The boot configuration file record points to the Master
Boot Record in the above example. The root configuration file record
points to a particular partition on the hard disk which has an ext2/ext3
file system on it. They are not the same. They are not supposed to be
the same. I think you have some conceptual errors in your mind that you
need to resolve.

As said before, it is not that I
can't boot, I can always boot just fine, but half of the time the boot
process will drop to (initramfs) PANIC mode. I.e., it is always the
root= boot option that give me the trouble, yet, I don't like using UUID,
 because, just as you said:

Warning: reformatting a partition normally changes the uuid, unless the
existing uuid is explicitly specified as an option when formatting. Thus,
commands such as mkfs (and its derivatives) and mkswap will normally
change the uuid, which in turn will change the udev-created symbolic link
in /dev/disk/by-uuid, which in turn may necessitate changes to /etc/
 lilo.conf.

 Can I use something like root=ID=ata-IBM-DBCA-203240_HP0HPL43952? I
remember nothing worked well, so I reverted to the (now troublesome)
 safe /dev/sdXn.

/dev/sdXn is *not* safe. That's the whole point. If your boot loader is LILO,
the only safe root file system specifications are one of these two forms:

   root=UUID=...
   root=LABEL=...

You must refer to the root file system by its uuid or by its disk label, if
there is one. Yes, reformatting a partition will normally change the uuid
and label, unless the old uuid and label are explicitly specified when
formatting. But that's under your control. And this is something that does
not change from one boot to the next. Device assignments can. Make sure
that you use this technique in your boot loader configuration file, /etc/fstab,
and /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume. (/etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume
is going to point to a swap partition.) If you have to change
/etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume, you must rebuild your initial RAM file
system afterwards, since this file is included in the initial RAM file system.

   update-initramfs -uk $(uname -r)

And obviously, if you change your boot loader configuration file, such as
/etc/lilo.conf, you must rerun your boot loader installer afterwards.

   lilo

always use a release code name, not a status, in /etc/apt/sources.list.
Wheezy is no longer the testing release. It is now the stable release.
Jessie is the new testing release. I intentionally did an upgrade from
Wheezy to Jessie, but when I saw that aptitude full-upgrade intended
to delete less, I aborted it and did an aptitude safe-upgrade instead.
You obviously gave it permission to delete less. You should pay closer
attention to what you give it permission to do. Given that you did,
your options are limited. Wait for less to be upgraded to a new release
that is compatible with man-db, if possible.

Problem with Konsole

2013-05-02 Thread Stephen P. Molnar
64 bit Debian Testing/XFCE.

When I open a console an untitled X File Window opens. This just
started today and I don't have a clue as to what is going on.

It is rather annoying because I don't get a prompt in the console until
I close this unwanted app.

Does anyone have an idea as to what is going on here and how I can fix
the problem?

Thanks in advance.

Guvcview Sound Problem

2013-04-24 Thread Stephen P. Molnar
Wheezy/Testing 64bit

I have a problem with the video sound in guvcview. The video works, but
the sound doesn't, although I have sound in the browsers I have
installed.

I recorded a log file (attached) which contains a bunch of error
messages, for example:

ALSA lib confmisc.c:1286:(snd_func_refer) Unable to find definition
'cards.ES1938.pcm.front.0:CARD=0'
ALSA lib conf.c:4241:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_refer
returned error: No such file or directory

How do I determine the source of the missing files, so that I can
install whatever is needed?

Any other help will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I absolutely do not want to kill this discussion. While other people joined

I don't want denunciation and conspiracy theories, because I disagree myself

Why should we behave in the same or more bad way as they do?

To discredit and to denunciate is wrong.
Conspiracy theories are idiotic.

We've got some real tasks to solve, so lets start doing it and not care about a

Again, we could talk about dbus, Firefox and Co. and than united talk to

Really?

To discredit people and to denunciate people with photos and obscure claims was
exactly what the [snip] did.

The OP has got an obscure email address.
There's no evidence for that claim.
So that claim belongs to /dev/null.

Thanks for your reply. Actually, I had run the tests that I reported
as root as well as sudo and got the same response = no sound.

However, I started to rerun the tests, as per your suggestion, and
miraculously, sound started working! Now, from a scientific viewpoint,
I believe in serendipity, but not in miracles. However, I willing to
accept the fact that the speaker in now generating intelligible sound.

Ping works, as does the sound in a browser. Pink noise generated in
speaker-test is a roaring hiss, not the sound that I get when I access
pink noise in youtube. I can accept that because I subscribe to the
adage that 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it', and the lesser spoken
corollary 'If it ain't broke, fix it it it will be'. There is a problem
with Skype. The speaker works, but the microphone doesn't. I do have a
clue. Before the HD crash and subsequent installation of the OS on the
new HD the microphone setting (that worked allowing a video call) was:

USB Device 0x46d:0x807, USB Audio (hw:2,0)

Now, in the reinstalled Skype version, that worked before, on the new
OS. there are a number of audio settings, the one most similar to the
one that worked is:

USB Device 0x46d:0x807, USB Audio (hw:1,0)

note the only difference. The question becomes, how do I change
(hw:1,0) to (hw:2.0?

Thanks in advance.

Wheezy/Testing Sound Problem

The problem is that the sound is not working at this point, other that
clicking noises as the system is booting.

i do understand that f7 is gui.

 Sometimes also F8.

Gnome (and probably other desktop environments also) only uses F8 when
restarted, and then only due to a bug. If you perform the logout
function after logging in to the GUI, Gnome is supposed
to shutdown and then restart again on vt7. Unfortunately, due to a bug,
vt7 does not get completely deallocated. Thus, when Gnome tries to
restart, it finds vt7 apparently in use and moves on to vt8.
Here's how to circumvent this bug.

After performing the logout function and the GUI login screen is
presented, switch to a text console, login as root, and issue the
following sequence of commands:

   /etc/init.d/gdm3 stop
   deallocvt 8
   killall console-kit-daemon
   deallocvt 7
   /etc/init.d/gdm3 start

Gnome should restart on vt7 this time. console-kit-daemon appears
to be the culprit. If you issue deallocvt 7 before killing
console-kit-daemon, deallocvt 7 will fail. I reported this as a
bug a long time ago, but nothing has been done about it.

You mean there is problem with the menu not showing synaptic as an option,

Also I'd say it is a problem with your DE/WM whatever that is.

Debian Wheezy Grub Problem

2013-03-12 Thread Stephen P. Molnar
My main Linux computer (64bit CPU) is about six or seven years old now
and has had a number of distributions running. As I haven't had any
luck with upgrades, I've always done a complete installation.

Currently the Grub boot menu has a number of choices:

openSUSE
Advanced options for openSUSE
openSUSE 12.1 (x86_64)
Advanced options for openSUSE 12.1 (x86_64)
Debian GNU/Linux (6.0.5)
Advanced options for Debian GNU/Linux (6.0.5)
Debian GNU/Linux (6.0.4)
Advanced options for Debian GNU/Linux (6.0.4)

There are a number of things that I find puzzling.

First of all, the most recent installation is Debian Wheezy/Testing
(7.0), and, in fact, WebMin tells me that the installed Operating
system is Debian Linux 7.0. In order to boot into what is now my
default Linux, installed on /dev/hda I have to select the seventh
option of the menu which is mislabeled as 6.0.4.

I had successfully installed some of the distributions on other
than /dev/hda, but the last several installation have been on the
Primary Master HD.

The computer boots well with the seventh entry in the menu, which is
not the default. This is rather annoying.

I have become thoroughly confused by the information I've found about
grub2. I am not a hardware person and am rather loathe to make any
changes to the boot loader, given my current high degree of mental
entropy.

I thought about switching to lilo and, in fact, tried that out
successfully on a laptop running Wheeezy in a VM. When I tried that on
the tower /sbin/lilo complained that it couldn't open /etc/lilo.conf,
even though I used sudo. Fortunately, my act of desperation didn't
render grub inoperable.

I would appreciate any insights.

Thanks in advance.

64 bit Wheezy RAM Limitation

2013-02-03 Thread Stephen P. Molnar
Let me start with a disclaimer - I am not a hardware person!

I am using Oracle VirtualBox (v 4.2.6 r82870) as a testbed for Wheezy
Testing before upgrading my production linux computer. The software is
installed on my 64 bit Dell Inspiron laptop with 8 GB of RAM running MS Win

7 Professional as the primary OS.

With a couple of exceptions that I attribute to a less than complete
understanding of the VirtualBox environment, Wheezy is performing well.

It was with a fair amount of surprise that I discovered, entirely by
chance, that according to KInfoCenter that the system is using only 4.47 GB
of total physical memory!!!

Googling 'Debian Wheezy 64 bit memory limitation' only turn up references to
Squeezy and the Debian Handbook doesn't seem to address the issue.

I would greatly appreciate being pointed to any sources of information about
this issue.

Thanks in advance.

Are you running Wheezy _inside_ VirtualBox with Windows 7 as the host OS, or is
this a dual-boot system?

If the latter, wheezy should easily detect 8 GB and use them. In case of the
former, you probably only allocated 4.7 GB to Wheezy in the VirtualBox
configuration, hence the ‘computer’ Wheezy runs on only has 4.7 GB.

Problem Mounting USB Stick in Debian Wheezy

2013-01-02 Thread Stephen P. Molnar
I am running Debian Wheezy on an Oracle VB on my Laptop and can't mount
an USB Stick, although I have installed usbmount.

The system is finding four USB devices:

Logitech USB receiver (my wireless mouse)
The USB Stick I mounted
and two unknown US Devices

I know that the stick is muntable because it mounts when I insert it in
a USB port that's run Squeeze as a native OS. I have to conclude that
the problme is with the virtual machine in which I am running Wheezy,
but am very hesitant to mess around with VirtualBox as I really don't
know what I'm doing.

Help will be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Installing R-2.15.2 in Debian Wheezy/Testing

2012-12-31 Thread Stephen P. Molnar
The current version of R that is available in Wheezy is 2.15.1. However,
version 2.15.2 is available at CRAN sites. The site I use is
http://cran.case.edu/bin/linux/debian which states:

'If you want to have up to date R on wheezy I propose to directly
install Dirks packages from unstable (sid) by creating a file
/etc/apt/preferences containing

   Package: *
   Pin: release a=testing
   Pin-Priority: 650

   Package: *
   Pin: release a=unstable
   Pin-Priority: 600

and adding a line for unstable in /etc/apt/sources.list.'

I assume that the preference file should be in /etc/apt and not in
/etc/apt/preferences.d

My question is what should be the format of the line in the sources.lists?

Thanks in advance

Re: Installing a backported kernel on Squeeze at an early stage.

I want to install Squeeze on a box in/on which the on board network card is
 not recognised in Squeeze.

The simple solution is just put a different network in the box temporarily
while I install. But this box is for a present, it is black, it comes
without spare blanking plates, and those already there have to be snapped
out, and cannot be replaced. I am not keen to spoil the looks as it is a
 present.

So could any kind soul point me at the relevant thread? It was fairly recent.

I don't recall the thread to which you are referring, Lisi, but from the
subject line it sounds like the standard squeeze kernel does not contain the
necessary drivers you need for the built-in network card but a later kernel
does. Is that right? Yet you want to install squeeze and not wheezy?
I believe if it were me, I'd install wheezy, using the latest wheezy installer.
wheezy is already in the frozen state, and will probably become the stable
release in a couple of months anyway. My wife's computer, which until recently
ran squeeze, recently had a problem. The version of iceweasel which comes
with squeeze couldn't handle some upgrades that Yahoo made to their web mail
interface. Fields were overlapping. It was apparently a bug in iceweasel
or a new feature that the Yahoo site was exploiting that was not supported
in the old version of iceweasel. I suppose that I could have installed a newer
version of iceweasel from backports, but due to the age of squeeze, I decided
to upgrade to wheezy. Problem solved.

As an alternative, you might try a PCMCIA / PC card network adapter, if your
computer has a slot for these devices, or perhaps a USB network adapter that
squeeze supports. Installing squeeze with the wheezy installer might work,
since the latest wheezy installer presumably uses a kernel that supports the
built-in network adapter. But then, after installation, you will need to
boot your system in rescue mode to install a backported kernel, and the
procedure will be non-standard (i.e. wget and dpkg -i, probably). In short,
I'd install wheezy if I were you.

Webcam Problem

Debian 64 bit Wheezy/sid in a VM on my Dell Laptop. I know that he

When I attempt to apply Camera default settings in Kamerka I get the
message 'Could not connect to V4L device!'

I have found
http://wiki.debian.org/AtiHowTo#Installing_proprietary_firmware but am
not sure about implementing the instructions.

I have found lspci -v | grep VGA

Also,

comp@debian:~$ grep DRM_RADEON /boot/config-3.2.0-4-amd64

comp@debian:~$ grep AGP /boot/config-3.2.0-4-amd64

CONFIG_AGP_VIA=y

However, according to the HowTo

CONFIG_AGP=y
CONFIG_AGP_AMD64=y
CONFIG_AGP_INTEL=m
CONFIG_AGP_SIS=m
CONFIG_AGP_VIA=m

Question #1: Am I on the right track?

Question #2: Is it safe to change settings from 'y' to 'm' in the
config file?

I'll be the first to admit that I don't have the faintest idea as to
what I'm doing when it comes to hardware.

Any assistance will be much appreciated.

KDE Taskbar Rearranges Itself on Boot

2012-11-28 Thread Stephen P. Molnar
I am running Squeeze 6.0.6/KDE in a VM on my Laptop as a tested before
upgrading my production computer.

When I first install the KDE Desktop the Taskbar retains the arrangement
that I make of the different icons. Unfortunately, as I use the Laptop for
consulting that involves MS Win apps I have to open and close the Linux VM.
Without warning the Taskbar rearranges the icons, even though the taskbar is
locked.

I would appreciate being pointed toward a solution to this problem.

Thanks in advance.

Wheezy beta3 Screen Locked Problem

I am running Wheezy beta 3 in a VM on my 64 bit laptop with 32 bit apps

I have encountered a strange (at least to me) problem in that only some apps
are locked to the upper left hand corner of the monitor when they are
opened.

For example, the Chrome browser can be moved as can the Trashcan can be
moved, while Synaptic is opened in the middle of the screen and can't be
moved.

Also, I had changed the number of desktops in the Workspaces app to t2o from
the default four. When I booted into the desktop this morning, the number
of windows was changed back to four (not by my doing) an he app was
unresponsive to changing the number of desktops.

Now, I realize that this is a beta distribution, but is there something I
can do to correct this problem?

Thanks in advance.

IIRC this was an issue for my latest Debian installs too.

I've never encountered this. Or if I have, I've never noticed
it or it never mattered. I've built out-of-kernel-source-tree modules
in conjunction with a custom kernel (by using the modules_image target)
and I've also been forced to deal with out-of-kernel-source-tree
Debian module packages that aren't designed to work with kernel-package
(by using the kernel_headers target and dkms), but in both cases
I had no trouble building the modules. Remember, for cases where
the module source package is designed to work with kernel-package,
you don't need to build or install a headers package in order to
build the modules. That's one of the qualities I like. I think it's
stupid to require that the user build and install a headers package
when the entire kernel source tree is already installed. A headers
package is a subset of the source tree, is it not? So why
build or install a headers package if the source tree is installed?

Hi, Lisi. My guess is that this is a permissions issue. Is your id a member
of group src? (Issue the groups command and see if src is one of the groups
listed in the output of the command.) Here is a summary of the permission
environment that must exist before you attempt to unpack the source as a
non-root
user:

(1) The directory /usr/src must be owned by user root and by group src.
(2) The group (src) must have read, write, and execute permissions on /usr/src.
(3) The group (src) must have the set group id permission on /usr/src.
(4) Your non-root userid must be a member of group src.
(5) The output of the groups command, when issued by your non-root userid,
must list src as one of the groups. Please review the Introduction
section of the document.

This appears to be really old.

The above document was last revised on August 4, 2012. I wouldn't classify
that as really old. Perhaps you assumed that it is old because I
recommend using kernel-package, rather than make deb-pkg or some
other newer method. kernel-package has been around a while, yes. But I
recommend it for what I consider to be good reasons, which are explained
over time in the document. You are, of course, entitled to disagree with
my opinion. But it's not old. I make an effort to keep it up to date,
and suggestions are welcome.

installing those.

Then go to http://packages.debian.org/ and search for

Permissions Problem

2012-10-14 Thread Stephen P. Molnar

Debian 6.0.5(64bit)/KDE4.4.5

I have a HD on my system, sdc1 which has root root ownership. I created
a directory, Apps, to which I gave computation computation ownership
(user). I can create a file in the Apps directory without any problems
as the user.

However, when I try to run an installer

./install_ecce.6.4.rehl5-gcc4.1.2-m64.csh

get a Permission denied message.

i should not that the same installer runs in the users (computation)
subdirectory. The installer permission are set for an executable file,
and cash has been installed on the system.

I know enough about permissions to know that I'm missing something, but
I don't know what it might be.

Thanks in advance.

Question about Users

2012-10-13 Thread Stephen P. Molnar
Although I have been using Linux for a number of years now I have just
migrated my systems to Debi an and I have a question about permissions.

Every distribution that I have used in the past has assigned a User, for
example 'computation'. in my case and has automatically put the User in a
Group 'users'. I noticed that in Debian both the User and Group are the
same, i.e., 'computation'. My question is why?

Thanks in advance.

Why not ;)?

users: While Debian systems use the user group system by default (each

HD Permissions Problem

2012-10-13 Thread Stephen P. Molnar

Debian 6.0.5 (64 bit)/KDE 4.4.5

For reasons lost to antiquity, I have 4 HD's on my system.
Unfortunately, the installer only found one of them, sda1, where the
distribution is installed. Of course, other utilities found all of the
drives and I have edited /etc/fstab and / to account for all of the
drives. I have two problems for which I would like solutions:

Problem #1. How do I give users on the system access to the drives? At
this point only root has access privileges.

Problem #2. One of the drives is formatted in the reisefs. The system
doesn't recognize that fs. I suppose I could reformat the drive as ext3
or ext4, but I really don't want to lose the contents.

Many thanks in advance.

Now, if I hadn't been gun shy before about modifying the OS before, I
certainly am now.

My second question is that I would like comments about how I think
(dangerous that) I should edit fstab:

The entries that are already there I would leave alone. I did check and
there are entries in /dev for the other partitions on the HD's

/dev/sdb1 /sdb1 ext3 defaults 0 2
/dev/sdc1 /sdc1 ext4 defaults 0 2
/dev/sdc2 /sdc2 ext4 defaults 0 2
/dev/sdd1 /sdd1 reiserfs defaults 0 2
/dev/sdd2 /sdd2 reiserfs defaults 0 2

/dev/sde1 /sde1 ext4 defaults 0 2
/dev/sde2 /sde2 ext4 defaults 0 2

I'm particularly not sure about the last two entries on each of the new
lines.

With apologies for my long windiness, I will appreciate the help that
I'm sure that I'll be receiving.

If You did some config. modifications by a normal user, then You can

Sthu.

I think that I have located the problem. The monitor resolution is set
at 1280x1024 by Debian. Also there are only four solutions listed in
System Settings/Size and Orientation.

I have an OpenSUSE 12.2 installatopn on another hadr drive in the systen
and it's resolution is 1680x1050 with eleven additional different
resolutions.

I had a screen resolution of 1680x1024 for the Debian desktop before I
started trying to change the dcreen drivers. That's what I would like
to get back, but don't have any idea how to accomplish this. I did look
at the Synaptic Package Manager logs and removed the mistakes that I
made and reinstalled the packages I'd removed, but that didn't correct
the problem.

I would assume that there may be a configuration file lurking somewhere
that has to be edited, but I am leery of making any changes, as I
clearly don't know what I'm doing.

Any assistance will be much appreciated.

Sthu.

The main X configuration file is /etc/X11/xorg.conf. If you rename this,
Debian/X will try to detect your display and adapter.

You can also boot to a root prompt and try X -configure to produce an
xorg.conf file to experiment with.

If you are using proprietary drivers, they each have a configuration
utility that should help.

Sthu's suggestion of using the purge option with apt-get/aptitude is
also worth trying.

And there's the kernel mode setting driver to consider. If it's not set
properly, you can get into all kinds of problems.

You will also find a /etc/X11/fonts directory that may have been screwed
up. If so, you could try renaming it then re-installing X.

Thank you for your reply, I really appreciate it. There is no xorg.conf
filer on the system.

I opened a cosole as root and got:

computation@debian:~$ su
Password:
root@debian:/home/computation# X -configure

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again.

Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support

Please advise.

Again, thanks in advance.

Yes, it does work as root, with or without the --rootcmd fakeroot option. ;-)
And it works as a non-root user too, if you leave off the kernel_headers
target. But I tested this specific scenario before I wrote what I wrote,
and the --rootcmd fakeroot option does not work with the kernel_headers
target if invoked by a non-root user. You must leave off the
--rootcmd fakeroot option (to avoid nested invocations of fakeroot) and
run the entire make-kpkg command under fakeroot if you use the kernel_headers
target.

All I need to do is build everything as it is out of the box ACCEPT

course the revision string must be right otherwise there are conflicts
 with linux-headers and DKMS.

Building a custom kernel is not a simple procedure. Period.
Of course, the more changes you make, the more complicated the
procedure is. But even making a simple change involves doing
a lot of things. If you have out-of-kernel-source-tree modules
you need to build, and there is no Debian source package for it
that is designed to work with kernel-package, then you will
probably need to build custom headers, as well as a custom kernel.
The document to which I referred explains how to do this, but
the short answer is to use the kernel_headers target in addition
to the kernel_image target. For example:

   fakeroot make-kpkg ... kernel_image kernel_headers

Note that when building a headers package you must run the entire
make-kpkg command under fakeroot: you can't use the --rootcmd fakeroot

Library Problem

2012-09-26 Thread Stephen P. Molnar
Although I have used linux since before the RedHat Mother's Day release
I am not an OS type person.

I have just installed the 64 bit Debian 6.05 and am encountering
problems which I am reasonably sure are due to library problems.

The error message that I get for a number of applications, most recently
Opera, is:

Gtk-Message: Failed to load module canberra-gtk-module:
/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/modules/libcanberra-gtk-module.so: wrong ELF class:

I presume that the error message means that there is a missing 32 bit
library on my 64 bit system. Now the problem is that I don't know how
to add a 32 bit library to 64 bit system using apt-get. My
/etc/apt/sources.list is:

#

Missing Files Prevent Installation/Execution of Applications

2012-09-12 Thread Stephen P. Molnar
I am in the midst of changing distributions for reasons that aren't really
germane to this note.

I have installed Debian-6.0.5-amd64 on my Dell Inspiron Laptop in VM
VirtualBox 4.1.22. I am having problems installing/running two applications:
MGLTools-1.5.4-Linux-86_64-install and PyRx-Linux-x68-Install (both are
available from www.scripps.edu).

MGLTools installs without any problems, but when I try to run I get:

computation@debian:~/Applications/MGLTools-1.5.4/bin$ ./adt
setting PYTHONHOME environment
Run AutoDockTools from
/home/computation/Applications/MGLTools-1.5.4/MGLToolsPckgs/AutoDockTools

Welcome to Python Molecule Viewer!
Visit http://mgltools.scripps.edu/documentation to read latest documentation.

Resource file used to customize PMV:
/home/computation/.mgltools/1.5.4/Pmv/_pmvrc
opengl extension GL_EXT_packed_depth_stencil is not present
X Error of failed request: BadDrawable (invalid Pixmap or Window parameter)
Major opcode of failed request: 14 (X_GetGeometry)
Resource id in failed request: 0x6200032
Serial number of failed request: 4436
Current serial number in output stream: 4436

The PyRx instalation process gives me:

computation@debian:~/Applications$ ./PyRx-0.9-Linux-x86-Install
invalid command name bind
while executing
::unknown bind Text Tab
(uplevel body line 1)
invoked from within
uplevel 1 $next $args
(procedure ::obj::Unknown line 3)
invoked from within
bind Text Tab
(procedure ::InstallJammer::InitializeGui line 19)
invoked from within
::InstallJammer::InitializeGui
(procedure ::InstallJammer::InitInstall line 63)
invoked from within
::InstallJammer::InitInstall
(file /installkitvfs/main.tcl line 38527)

I think that I know enough to realize that there are missing libraries.
However, while I have been a linux user for a number of years now, I am not an
OS type of individual and have no idea what I need to install to get these
applications to run on Debian.

Any assistance will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

You've got VirtualBox 4.1.22, the current version installed. Do the
guest additions fit to this version? Perhaps you started with an older
version of VBox, upgraded VBox, but not the guest additions.
Does the extension pack fit to this version? Maybe the extension pack
has got no impact to the trouble, I don't know.

The entire VirtualBox installation, including the guest additions are up to
date. I'm afraid that I don't see what this has to do with missing libraries.

Assuming you really want to keep Gnome there are several workarounds for
 that:
 - just remove the gnome-core metapackage and keep all other dependencies
 - equivs (either build a replacement metapackage or a replacement
   dependency)
 - dpkg --force-depends

As much as I dislike pulseaudio (I wish everyone would use alsa), it is
evident that this is the future direction of Debian; so I would like to
find a way for pulseaudio and alsa to peacefully coexist if possible.

I can confirm that my userid is in the cdrom and audio groups. I haven't

But the problem seems to be more systemic. I can't seem to get aplay
to work on a .wav file. It runs, and it generates messages on the
screen, but no sound.

Pulseaudio isn't on my system but isn't it a daemon? Wouldn't stopping
it allow you to eliminate it as a cause?

pulseaudio is a depends (not a recommends) dependency of gnome-core;
so I can't de-install it. As for killing the daemon, gnome automatically
re-spawns pulseaudio if I kill the daemon. I have to stop gnome.
But even then, no output from playing audio CDs and no output from aplay.
Yet, gnome can generate sounds. Maddening.

Getting 3D graphics support out of my ATI Rage XL video chip?

2012-09-08 Thread Stephen Powell
Hello, list. I've recently installed Debian Wheezy on a new (to me)
computer with an ATI Rage XL video chip. Here is an excerpt from
the output of lspci -nn -vv. (Line wraps have been inserted to
keep well within the customary 80-column limit.)

05:03.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD]
nee ATI Rage XL [1002:4752] (rev 27) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

The X server auto-selects the ati driver, which in turn selects the
mach64 driver. the mach64 driver identifies the card in
/var/log/Xorg.0.log as ...

ATI 3D Rage XL or XC graphics controller detected
Chip type 4752 GR, version 7, foundry TSMC, class 0, revision 0x00

So the chip does have 3D capabilities. But when the X server
attempts to activate 3D acceleration, I get the following error:

[drm] failed to load kernel module mach64

and the driver reverts to 2D acceleration only. I've done quite a bit
of internet searching this morning, and it appears that it is, at
least in theory, possible to enable 3D acceleration; but it is not a
trivial task. Here's one link that I've found:

http://www.allquests.com/question/1501572-4/HOWTO-enable-3d-acceleration-w-Rage-Mobility-mach64.html

But this involves manual compilation and not using Debian packages.
From other search results, it appears that there was at one time a
Debian package called drm-modules-source, which existed in experimental
back in the days of Lenny, but this package appears to have disappeared.
Before I get knee-deep in this, I thought I'd ask the list if there's
a better way. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is there a
Debian package I can use?

This is a server machine literally thrown away by a business.
But it is now the most capable machine that I own.

And you need 3D acceleration because...?

I don't NEED it, I just WANT it. I want it
mainly because I want to run GNOME 3. GNOME 3 initializes
in fallback mode if the graphics chip does not support 3D
acceleration, it seems.

 I will add this one:

 http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/DriTroubleshooting

I can't seem to connect to the site right now. I get a
503 Service Unavailable. I'll try again later.

I wonder why people is so reluctant about installing packages from the
outside when this involves upstream projects which are well-known and
 trustworthy :-?

It's not a trust issue. I just prefer to stick to Debian packages
because they are likely to be better integrated with the Debian
maintenance procedures. For example, when using Nvidia drivers I
much prefer to stick to Debian packages rather than download stuff
directly from Nvidia because applying system maintenance is much
less likely to break the driver if I use Debian packages.

There exists this package but not sure if it's for the same purpose :-?

http://packages.debian.org/wheezy/xserver-xorg-video-mach64

No, that is a binary user-space X driver, which is what the X server
is using now. The package I was referring to apparently contained the
source code for the mach64 kernel module, among other things.

motherboards available for 32-bit processors that support installing
more than 4G of RAM? What good is memory that the processor can't address?

The processor can address up to 64GB using PAE:
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_Address_Extension

That explains it. Thanks. Thanks also to the other members of the
list who responded regarding PAE.

 ...
Note I used the word mainframe. All of this unique technology and
scalability Unisys brought to x86, MS Windows and, to a lesser degree,
Linux, was directly derived from Unisys' ClearPath mainframe technology,
where such features had been common for years, as well as on IBM,
 Fujitsu, and other mainframes.
 ...

I work on IBM mainframes as my day job. 32-bit IBM mainframes have
a 2 GB address limit. (That's because, although the registers for
manipulating binary integer numbers are 32-bits wide, the address bus
has only 31 address lines.) Physical memory in excess of 2 GB could be
installed though. You could use the extra memory in two ways. (1)
IBM provides virtual-machine-level virtualization built-in to the
hardware microcode, known as PR/SM (Processor Resource / System Manager).
This can create what are known as LPARs (Logical PARtitions). You can
divide up the physical memory between LPARs, so that each LPAR does not
exceed 2G. (2) You can configure some of the memory, either in basic
mode or in LPAR mode, as expanded memory. (Think back to the expanded
memory boards in the days of DOS.)

This in known in IBM lingo
as XSTORE memory as opposed to CSTORE memory. Some IBM mainframe operating
systems, such as VM, can use XSTORE memory as a high-speed paging device.
Then, some applications, such as DB2, can use hyperspaces or
VM data spaces as ways to exploit memory above 2 GB. I was aware of
these techniques in the mainframe world to exploit memory above 2 GB,
but I'm much less familiar with the world of PC CPUs.

BTW, IBM's 64-bit machines no longer offer a basic mode. LPAR mode is
required on all 64-bit machines, AFAIK.

Well, I've looked into it, and that's not going to work. The mobo
you suggested has stuff on it for which there are no connector holes
on the back of the case. The built-in connector holes on the back
of the case support A/C power (of course), PS/2 mouse, PS/2 keyboard
(small-size PS/2 connectors in both cases), 2 USB ports, 2 serial ports,
and one parallel port. In addition, there are knock-out plugs for what
looks like a joystick/MIDI port and what looks like line-in, line-out,
and microphone connectors for on-board sound. I would have to knock
out the metal plugs, but at least the case can handle a mobo with
on-board sound. But there are no connector holes for VGA output, DVI
output, or an Ethernet jack for a network connection, nor are there
knock-out plugs for the same. The power supply connector to the mobo
is a 20-pin connector. The case is just not designed to handle modern
mobos.

I can't even identify the mobo. With no RAM, the BIOS won't initialize.
It just beeps at me (about 1 second on and 1 second off). So the BIOS
won't tell me what the mobo is. I searched in vain for some form of
identification on the mobo silk screen itself, but all I could find
was Made in China. Therefore, I don't know what kind of memory it
needs. I'm afraid this other system is going to be good for nothing
except possibly to be cannibalized for parts. A clue to its age:
it has a couple of ISA (or possibly EISA) bus slots on it, in addition
to PCI bus slots. And the video card appears to be VESA local bus.

the SATA NCQ implementation. As a result, Nvidia employees have
contributed code to disable NCQ operations under Linux. But I have
no idea what that means, or whether or not it would be relevant in
my case.

If you need parts for old systems, you simply can't be Ebay. Just about
anything you could need is available, and usually really cheap. The
older the tech the cheaper. The opposite is normally true when buying
from computer retailers. In this case the older it is the more they
want for it, if they even have it or can get it. They treat such parts
as collectable antique furniture, price wise.

What I meant was that I may buy the new mobo, processor, and RAM
that you suggested and put it in this second machine I'm talking about.
But yes, that's true about E-bay (and other sites too). But the
key is you simply *must* know *exactly* what you want/need.
Retail vendors, such as oempcworld.com, usually have a web site where
you can identify your system somehow and then they will tell *you*
what you need (or at least what they recommend). On E-bay, it's,
I have this for sale. Do you want it or not? And often, for me,
the answer is, I'm not sure. If I buy the wrong thing, and that
has happened before, I'm usually out the money and stuck with something
I can't use. The terms are often all sales final. I simply am

PC2100.

Right. I understand they used a generic picture.

The nVidia MCP61 SB+GPU single chip chipset on this board hit the market
in late 2006 and has been out of production for at least 2 years, boards
using it out of production for a year. Units still in the channel are
simply those that haven't sold. This is the reason this is the cheapest
 socket AM3 board Newegg offers.

Sometimes you forget you and I think alot alike. I'd never recommend
anything bleeding edge to you Stephen.

I could find no evidence of support for this chip in the Debian package
descriptions (on-line web pages) for nvidia-kernel-source,
nvidia-kernel-legacy-173xx-source, or nvidia-kernel-legacy-96xx-source
for the Squeeze release. I could not find MCP61 anywhere. Of course,
the nvidia-kernel-legacy-71xx-source package exists only in Sid because
of build problems. It doesn't work with any release past Lenny.
But I searched it too, just for grins, and couldn't find MCP61 on that
web page either. By the way, that brings up a pet peeve of mine.
I should probably open another thread for it. The Wheezy versions of the
above Debian packages (i.e. the on-line web pages which describe them)
have *no* description of which chipsets they support.
How is one supposed to know which package one needs if one is running
Wheezy?

The 2D chip is too slow. If you want to use a GUI desktop and a modern
browser, visit modern complex websites, play flash videos etc, this
 system won't be very snappy.

That depends on one's level of expectations. I'm currently using a 1 GHz
single core, single thread, 32-bit processor and only 512M of RAM. The
video driver is nouveau, and for this chipset, it apparently does not
support 3D acceleration. So, believe it or not, I expect that the built-
in Intel video will be an improvement over what I've got now. If not,
installing a separate video card is always an option.

You'll also likely need to add a sound card.

Actually, no. There is no built-in sound chip on the mobo, but there is
a sound card installed in an expansion slot. Apparently, the previous
owner was using it as a desktop system, even though it was originally
intended as a server.

Now, if you plan to use it as a headless server, spend the $50 on the
memory and use it as is. Should be fine for some light duty stuff.

Actually, I just might do both. I have another computer that someone
gave to me that has no RAM at all on it. Apparently the previous owner
removed the RAM from the old computer in order to use it in his new
computer before he gave me the old computer. Maybe I'll just replace
the mobo in it. I need to do more research first though.

Right. They are Dual In-line Memory Modules, not Single In-line Memory

You probably won't find that registered ECC DDR200 through retail

Hmm. I'm not even sure if this is the right kind of memory. Plus,
I only need 4. What would I do with the other 10? I went to the web site
of an outfit I've dealt with before, http://www.oempcworld.com, and I
found a way to specify my system by entering the motherboard number.
I told it I had an Intel SE7500CW2. Here's the page it took me to:

http://www.oempcworld.com/configurator/configurator.php?mch=SE7500CW2mfr=Intelmdn=SE7500+Mainboard+Series

They are charging about $30 per DIMM, so four of them would be about
$120.

$50 for old RAM or $110 few all new guts? $110 gets you a new Foxconn
 AM3 mobo, 2.8GHz 1MB L2 64bit 45 watt single core AMD retail CPU, and
4GB DDR3-1333 dual channel RAM-- 6.6x the memory bandwidth of the
 Netburst Xeon.

I've used this combo to refurb 2 old machines now, including the machine
from which I've typing this. No problems so far with exactly one year
on this one. I've got a dual core Regor 3GHz 2x1MB L2 in this box.

If a single core 2.8 64bit Sempron is insufficient for your workload,
 add $25 for a 65 watt 3.2GHz dual core AthlonII X2, $135 total:
 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103873

Hmm. That's worth mulling over. But I generally like to get hardware
when it's at least 3 or 4 years old. That way, I can usually run
Debian stable and have all the device drivers work with no problems.
I worry particularly about the mobo with an on-board bleeding edge
Nvidia video chipset. This thing is about 10 years old, but since
it was originally intended to be used as a high-end server, it should
make a decent desktop system even today.

As long as the PSU has the 4-pin CPU power plug, and it should being a
Xeon board, you shouldn't need to replace anything else. And you've
basically got a brand new system, sans drives, for $110-135.

I don't see the 4-pin CPU power plug to which you refer coming out
of the power supply. (Yes, I finally broke down and took the cover

Simplicity. Google CPUID 0F27. First hit is:
 http://www.cpu-world.com/sspec/SL/SL6YH.html

That tells us 0F27 is the Northwood core.

I don't suppose you'd have a URL handy, now would you? Next time, I can
check myself and not have to bother the list.

Once we have the above info, Wikipedia tells us the Northwood chips were
all 130nm, and that EM64T wasn't introduced until the 90nm series. The
2.4GHz/512KB/400MHz Prestonia CPUID 0F27 was released in April 2002.
Nacona (90nm) with EM64T was introduced over two years later, in June 2004.

Hmm. Well, it appears that CPUIDs are not unique. I've done some more
research, and it appears that CPUID is just one more piece of evidence,
which must be considered along with all the other known characteristics,
in order to figure out what one has. One other piece of evidence that I
needed, but did not tell the list, is that the chipset is the Intel 7500
chipset, which means that the effective bus speed is 400 MHz. (The actual
bus speed is 100 MHz, but the processor operates at Quad bus speed, making
the effective bus speed 400 MHz.) The CPU World web site which you pointed
me to was very helpful though. After some more research, I believe that
this is the right web page (watch out for a wrapped URL):

http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Xeon/Intel-Xeon%202.4%20GHz%20-%20RN80532KC056512%20%28BX80532KC2400D%20-%20BX80532KC2400DU%29.html

The CPUID of 0F27h means that the S-spec number is either QML8,
SL6EP, or SL6K2. QML8 is unlikely, since this is a Quality Sample.

The bottom line: it is most definitely a 32-bit CPU. It does have
2 hyperthreads; so a Linux kernel with SMP enabled will see 2 logical
processors.

Now, my next step is to figure out what memory SIMMs to order.
I'd like to install four 1G SIMMs, if they exist for this motherboard.
But the devil is in the details.

During POST, when the RAM is being tested, the following appears on
the screen:

SE7500CW20.86B.0034.P17.0522031027

Maybe that means something to you?

Is my processor 32-bit or 64-bit?

2012-08-20 Thread Stephen Powell
Several years ago a friend, who owns his own business, gave me one of his
old servers because he knows that computers are my hobby. It's been
sitting around my basement since then, but it has finally worked its way
to the top of my to do list. I just fired it up for the first time
yesterday. Basically, I am trying to determine if this is a 64-bit-
capable machine or not, and I can't tell. Here's what the BIOS setup
program reports for the CPU:

Boot Strap Processor
Installed Speed: 2.40 GHz
Socket Name: BSP
Manufacturer:GenuineIntel
Version: Intel(R) Xeon(TM)
CPUID: 0F27
L2 Cache:512 KB

I consulted Wikipedia's web page on Intel Processors
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_microprocessors),
but was unable to find a processor in the list which met
all the criteria (Xeon in the name, speed, and L2 cache).

The machine has a Phoenix BIOS, version 1.28, dated 05/22/2003.
That may help narrow things down. (For example, it is unlikely
that a processor introduced in 2008 would be given a BIOS dated
in 2003.) Any ideas? Oh, one other thing. Hyper-Threading was
enabled in the BIOS, suggesting that, as viewed by an operating
system, the machine has at least two CPUs. But that may not be
100% reliable. The machine has 1 GB of RAM installed. (Two
512M SIMMs and 2 empty SIMM slots.)

I don't have Linux installed yet. (I'm trying to determine if
I want to install the i386 or amd64 port.)

Windows Server 2003 is installed, but I don't know a valid
userid/password combination to log in. All I can access right
now is the BIOS setup program.

OpenSource Development isn't a democracy. BTW This change isn't going to
be reverted. It's the way pros work in the Graphics Industry when
they're using layering and alpha channels. They need a way to save
non-destructively and with all content.

If people don't like the way GIMP is working in 2.8 then they most
likely aren't the target audience that the GIMP developers are aiming
for. It's not like there aren't lots of simple editors about, so choose
one that fits the work-flow you wish to use.

Of course it does, as I stated, Again, on an old laptop like mine as
stated, I have hand no problem running Debian Gnome-Shell for some time.

In terms of work-flow, being a sane one is quite subjective. I
understand that most people don't like to adapt to new things and get
set in their ways -- but if we all did that, no progress would ever be
made. Tends to get worse as we age too, which makes moi quite an
anomaly.

Ralf have you tried Cinnamon?

You mean the 3rd party commenting api that some organizations/folks use

Don't think so, I installed it recently on my Google Blogspot blog.
Works fine. Pretty sure Google isn't using Window's Servers and I know
that it works on Linux/MacOS/MSFT browsers client side. shrug

 about that.

I've heard this said by other prior too. Gnome-Shell works fine on an
older circa 2005 IBM X41 laptop. I've been running it since it came to
SID. The main criteria in my experience is having enough RAM. I have 1.5
Gb and Gnome-Shell runs in about a 300 Mb of ram, and that's with a
handful of Gnome-Shell-Extensions to boot. It runs faster and much
smoother than Gnome 2 ever did on this laptop!

So please lets stop the misinformation. Anything using the GTK2 toolkit
is a step backward simply because of the outstanding bugs that will
never be fixed. GTK3 and Gnome-Shell are an improvement in terms of
speed. If one wants the older look of the GTK2 Gnome interface, it can
be had, using Cinnamon. MATE isn't going anywhere in the future because
it relies on buggy GTK2.
