I have used them together without anything special and had no problems, but recently I changed to the more elegant configuration (taken from the man pages, of course): device=/dev/ttyS1 responsiveness= type=msc append="-3 -o dtr -R" The important part is the -R. With this config, gpm creates pseudo mouse data on /dev/gpmdata. Then I have /dev/mouse linked to /dev/gpmdata, and I can point all other programs (X, dosemu, etc) to /dev/mouse (configured as mouse systems). keyboard settings
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hello all. I am stuggleing to get my keyboard set up to work in X and on the console consistantly. Basically, I would like the Backspace key (above enter) to cause the previous character to be erased and the delete key (to the right of enter) to erase the character under the cursor. I have read *all* the HOWTOs and FAQs and am having trouble making things work the way they said that they would. Specifically I am having trouble with GNU emacs in X. I have trouble getting emacs in X to see the difference between BackSpace and Delete. I have tried using xmodmap to set keycode 22 = BackSpace and keycode 107 = Delete, but emacs still says they are the same key. Basically, all I want is to have the two keys work independantly. Whatever solution is found, I wouldn't want it to screw up Motif apps completely. I guess that means the solution (If there is one, I hope) is going to be complex. I just want consistancy between the console and X. I want to be able to use emacs at the console and in X and have BS and DEL work the same way in both. 2 problems
I have two questions: 1) has something changed in the way dselect/dpkg installs packages. In the past, dpkg used to choose the best order to install packages so as to avoid dependancy problems. Now, when installing packages with dselect, this is not done. For example, I recently installed emacs from and emacs-el was attempted before emacs. dpkg complained that emacs must be installed before emacs-el. Is there a fix to this? 2) recently a number of packages have been having trouble getting installed. svgalib and zlib are 2 examples. The problem is this: dselect recognizes that there are new versions availble and they get downloaded. Then dpkg (i presume) complains that the downloaded packages are older than the currently installed set. However, in they are not. manually installing them with dpkg -i works. I believe this has something to do with the : in available and status version numbers. I have the most recent versions of utilities (dpkg, etc.) from unstable. You will be limited to bios supported modes though. Not as flexible as stm. If you are using a newer kernel, I believe there is a compile config option to allow this. Hi. I am having a little trouble with gimp. I have installed gimp 0.54.1-5 and gimp-plugins 1.0-1. My problem is that I can't figure out how to access the menus/pluging that are defined in my config files. I have copied /etc/gimp/gimprc to ~/.gimprc and have verified that it and /etc/gimp/add-ons.rc and /etc/gimp/plug-ins.rc *are* getting parsed. However, I see no menus or menu options to access these plugins. For example, the blur plugin is supposed to be under a Blur/Blur menu with a Alt+B hotkey. The ALt+B hotkey works fine, but I can find no other way to access the blur plugin. I am using all the default config files from gimp and gimp-plugins. I must be makeing some simple mistake since many people love this program. I'd love to be able to love it too. In fact, this message has little to do with Johann's message. He just finally inspired me to speak up. Please feel free to comment or just ignore this message. I have felt for some time that a lot of people are getting the wrong idea about Linux. I don't think linux is intended to be a suitable replacement OS for "computer illiterates" and other people who want to put no work into their system, and I hope linux developers are not trying to make it that. We shouldn't expect a Windows 95 user to be able to install Linux in an afternoon and never have to do any configuration at all. If they can get Linux up and running with suitable applications to keep them happy, they may never feel the need to do appropriate administration. I've seen this in action. It's a horrible site to see the state that a Linux box gets to after 4 to five months of non-administration. Linux *is* a unix like system that requires a certain amount of administration just like any other unix system. Don't get me wrong. I have nothing against great, user-friendly tools to make administration easier, but I don't think the computer should be left to administer itself completely. What will the user do in 3 months when something goes wrong (as things do inevitably happen)? He or she might not even know where to begin looking let alone be able to fix the problem. Unix boxes need administrators. I do see a case for user-friendly apps and such that allow *users* to use the system without any need to learn unix, but I see this in a multi-user environment such as an office or department where there is a system administrator *somewhere* who is responsible for upkeep. For machines that will sit on a desktop and only ever have one user, that one user *must* learn to be the administrator. Either that or they could just reinstall from scratch every time something goes wrong? I don't know. Linux is a very powerful OS, and part of its power comes from its flexibility and configurability. I don't know of a good way to have an "automatic" OS that is also as flexible and powerful. Along the same lines, I think adding simplicity to dselect to help new users get started is great, but I don't think any of the power of dselect should be taken way. It is a very powerful tool once you learn how to use it. Making it more intuitive would be something nice that wouldn't affect functionallity. Forgive my rambling, or just fire away. Just adding my two cents. On a 386/sx with 4MB of RAM the ability to load modules (sound alone is 160K) only when you need them means a lot less swapping. Granted, the ideal solution would be to add more memory, but many of us are poor. A person with low memory can benfit a lot by making lightly used drivers into modules (ppp, floppy, sound, etc...). 2. Some drivers can't be used effectivly unless they are module. For example, on my system, I have 2 parallel ports. One I use for my printer. The other I use with plip. These 2 drivers (lp and plip) are mutually exclusive when compiled into the kernel. The first one that loads would requisition all of the printer ports. The second would then fail to find any ports. With modules, I can say, "lp use port 1, plip use port 2". Just my 2 cents... diald bug
Hello. I am getting (and have been getting) the following error from diald (taken from the log): Dec 2 00:11:24 sigma diald[388]: Nonzero exit status (7) on command '/sbin/route add default gw 127.0.0.2 metric 2000 dev sl1' Now, someone once told me to just ignore this as it wasn't a problem. However, I now realize that in conjunction with this error, the default route is not getting re-created. Therefore, once the link goes down once, it will never go back up automatically. It does still work fine using the control fifo, signals, or by creating the appropriate route by hand. Is there a fix for this or a way around. I know that you can tell diald to run a script instead of the above route command, but I haven't tried to create a replacement for the default behavior yet. init problems
I am still having problems with init. My computer is up to date with unstable. sysvinit was one of the many things that got upgraded in a flurry last week. Now, programs that don't put themselves in the background get killed before the gettys are started. For example, the software watchdog and slattach. I have tried putting these in /etc/init.d/ (in an appropriate format) and in /etc/rc.boot/. In both cases they get killed. For watchdog, I am using the unmodified script from the distribution, and it still doesn't work. I have tried using nohup, but this does not help. Does anyone have any suggestions. If not, I will have to downgrade sysvinit. ~*-,._.,-*~'`^`'~*-,._.,-*~'`^`'~*-,._.,-*~'`^`'~*-,._.,-*~'`^`'~*-,._.,-*~ ==-- _ / / \ ---==---(_)__ __ __/ / /\ \ - [EMAIL PROTECTED] --==---/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / / /_/\ \ \ - [EMAIL PROTECTED] -=/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ /__\ \ \ - [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.linux.org \_\/ -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . trouble with bootup...
I am having some trouble with my bootup sequence. Specifcally, slattach is getting killed some time between when it gets started and when the login prompt appears. I have tried using nohup, but this has no effect. slattach still gets killed. slattach is getting started. I have put some ps's in various locations and it is there and stays there until the it get's killed somehow during the init process. I have tried putting it in /etc/rc.boot and in /etc/init.d/ using standard formats in each case, but it gets killed both times. This was not a problem a week ago. It is assumed by Linus, et. al., that /usr/include/linux, /usr/include/asm, and /usr/include/asm-i386 will all be symlinks to the actual kernel source.
