I have been running gpm and X at the same time for the last year and a
half. Never had a problem. I have used them together without
anything special and had no problems, but recently I changed to the
more elegant configuration (taken from the man pages, of course):

device=/dev/ttyS1
responsiveness=
type=msc
append="-3 -o dtr -R"

The important part is the -R. With this config, gpm creates pseudo
mouse data on /dev/gpmdata. Then I have /dev/mouse linked to
/dev/gpmdata, and I can point all other programs (X, dosemu, etc) to
/dev/mouse (configured as mouse systems).

Good Luck,
Erv

iso9660 image?

1997-05-22 Thread edwalter

Just curious. Is the "well designed" cdrom image going to be made
available still? I'm going to burn a copy of 1.3 in the next week or
so and I'd much prefer to use a pre-built image simply because it will
be more reliably arranged than anything I could make myself.

Thanks,

hamm

1997-04-27 Thread edwalter
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

What is the appropriate method of pointing the ftp method of dselect to
the hamm distribution. I have tried the following. Each has it's own
problem:

ftpsite: llug.sep.bnl.gov

debian base: /pub/debian
distributions: unstable non-free contrib
problem: these aren't the hamm non-free and hamm-contrib. They are
stable

debian base: /pub/debian/hamm
distributions: hamm non-free contrib
problem: paths in Packages file assume debian base of /pub/debian so
files aren't found (ie. ftp method looks for
/pub/debian/hamm/unstable/...)

debian base: /pub/debian
distributions: unstable hamm/non-free hamm/contrib
problem: dpkg --merge names the Packages file Pacakges.hamm_non-free
and Packages.hamm_contrib but ftp method expects something else (it
complains that the Packages file is missing and I should run Update).
This is clearly caused by the '/' in the distribution name.

Is there a solution? Or is this an unresolved bug with the ftp
method? Should there be some kind of unstable-non-free and
unstable-contrib symlinks in the /pub/debian?

Thanks,
Erv

xconsole

1997-04-02 Thread edwalter
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

I guess I don't quite understand the purpose of the xconsole program.
I have put run-xconsole in /etc/X11/config and xdm starts xconsole in
the lower right corner. It gets carried over when someone logs in,
but nothing ever appears in it. What is supposed to end up there? On
other workstations I have worked on, there is lots of stuff that shows
up in xconsole, namely errors, kernel messages that would normally go
to the regular console, etc. This doesn't seem to be happening for
me. Am I doing something wrong?

This is the line in Xsetup_0:

if grep -q ^run-xconsole /etc/X11/config
then
xconsole -geometry 480x130-0-0 -daemon -notify -verbose -fn fixed \
-exitOnFail -file /dev/xconsole

KDE/KDM

1997-04-01 Thread edwalter

Are there any plans to package KDE (www.kde.org) or any of it's
components?

I am particularly impressed with kdm -- a _dropin_ replacement for xdm
that looks *very* nice and includes support for nice logos (like the
debian logos) and for a optional shutdown button.

I am using the binary from a redhat full distribution package that I
had to edit with a binary editor to change the string that says "KDE
Desktop Environment" to "Debian/GNU Linux" (just a personal
preference). I had to do this cause I had trouble compiling kdm
(without compiling the entire KDE environment (huge)). There are
several other good programs/applets/windowmanager that other people
might like...

Just wondering,

Thanks! I guess I missed that one. One thing though for everyone in
general (devels in particular). Once I followed these instructions
and got emacs working, I noticed that Motif apps were not working
right. The symptom was that [Delete] did a backspace istead. After a
Long Time tweaking various options to find out what was causeing the
problem (since it had been working a few days ago), I found 2 lines in
/etc/X11/Xresources that refered to *XmText.translations and
XmTextField.translations. These were the cause. I'm not sure why
these were put in here (by the developers), but the Keyboard-HOWTO and
Key-Setup-HOWTO and Netscape readme all strong suggest that they *not*
be used because they screw things up (as they did in my case). I just
wanted to let people know of the cause if they experience the
problem...

keyboard settings

1997-04-01 Thread edwalter
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Hello all. I am stuggleing to get my keyboard set up to work in X and
on the console consistantly. Basically, I would like the Backspace
key (above enter) to cause the previous character to be erased and the
delete key (to the right of enter) to erase the character under the
cursor. I have read *all* the HOWTOs and FAQs and am having trouble
making things work the way they said that they would. Specifically I
am having trouble with GNU emacs in X. I have trouble getting emacs
in X to see the difference between BackSpace and Delete. I have tried
using xmodmap to set keycode 22 = BackSpace and keycode 107 = Delete,
but emacs still says they are the same key.

Basically, all I want is to have the two keys work independantly.
Whatever solution is found, I wouldn't want it to screw up Motif apps
completely. I guess that means the solution (If there is one, I hope)
is going to be complex. I just want consistancy between the console
and X. I want to be able to use emacs at the console and in X and
have BS and DEL work the same way in both. At the same time, I would
like other apps to work naturally.

Please help if you can.

Thanks,
Erv Walter

2 problems

1997-03-09 Thread edwalter
I have two questions:

1) has something changed in the way dselect/dpkg installs packages.
In the past, dpkg used to choose the best order to install packages so
as to avoid dependancy problems. Now, when installing packages with
dselect, this is not done. For example, I recently installed emacs
from and emacs-el was attempted before emacs. dpkg complained that
emacs must be installed before emacs-el. Is there a fix to this?

2) recently a number of packages have been having trouble getting
installed. svgalib and zlib are 2 examples. The problem is this:
dselect recognizes that there are new versions availble and they get
downloaded. Then dpkg (i presume) complains that the downloaded
packages are older than the currently installed set. However, in they
are not. manually installing them with dpkg -i works. I believe this
has something to do with the : in available and status version
numbers.

I have the most recent versions of utilities (dpkg, etc.) from
unstable.

Thanks,
Erv

There are many cards that are not supported, if you can't get it to
work with the 542x option, then you probably are out of luck with
SVGATextMode. I don't know that new chipsets are being actively
added. I haven't seen this type of activity anytime recently. I
could be wrong.

The only other thing I can suggest for changein video
modes is the vga= kernel parameter (appended to lilo or loadlin). Use
vga=ask initially until you find a mode you like. They specify that
one. You will be limited to bios supported modes though. Not as
flexible as stm. If you are using a newer kernel, I believe there is
a compile config option to allow this. You should verify that this
functionallity is compiled in.

Good Luck,
Erv

It sounds like you are new to unix in addition to linux. I would
recommend a good unix primer (there are many good ones, but I like the

it will make you more productive in the future.

gimp troublees

1997-03-01 Thread edwalter
Hi. I am having a little trouble with gimp. I have installed gimp
0.54.1-5 and gimp-plugins 1.0-1. My problem is that I can't figure
out how to access the menus/pluging that are defined in my config
files. I have copied /etc/gimp/gimprc to ~/.gimprc and have verified
that it and /etc/gimp/add-ons.rc and /etc/gimp/plug-ins.rc *are*
getting parsed. However, I see no menus or menu options to access
these plugins. For example, the blur plugin is supposed to be under a
Blur/Blur menu with a Alt+B hotkey. The ALt+B hotkey works fine, but
I can find no other way to access the blur plugin.

I am using all the default config files from gimp and gimp-plugins. I
must be makeing some simple mistake since many people love this
program. I'd love to be able to love it too.

Any help would be appreciated,
Erv

I don't know of a way to make it perfect, but, the following is a
fix. in the drivers/sound directory, copy Config.std to Config.in and
then do make config or oldconfig (not make menuconfig or xconfig).
When it gets to the sound part, it will use the traditional config
program instead of the modified system developed for use with xconfig
and menuconfig. Once this is complete, you can make the debian
package. Be sure to save the config in /etx/soundconf when it asks.

Hopefully, this can be fixed so menuconfig and xconfig can be used in
the future. I believe this is a kernel problem and not a debian
problem because it happens even when the kernel is created using
xconfig or menuconfig without debian tools.

Luck,
Erv

Actually, the correct choice is -I/usr/src/linux/include/
And Include paths that are put on the command line get used before any
standard paths. I use this to my benefit many times. You have to do
this to compile recent modutils, any kernel modules, etc...
Works great if you get the right directory.

This is becoming an FAQ. As stated in the doumentation, your chat
script should not start pppd. diald starts pppd when it is ready.
your chat script is only for "chatting" -- that is getting the
connection up.

Change your /etc/ppp/startppp-diald to:

chat -f /etc/ppp/chatscript

This is not directed at Johann or anyone else in particular. In fact,
this message has little to do with Johann's message. He just finally
inspired me to speak up. Please feel free to comment or just ignore
this message. I have felt for some time that a lot of people are
getting the wrong idea about Linux. I don't think linux is intended
to be a suitable replacement OS for "computer illiterates" and other
people who want to put no work into their system, and I hope linux
developers are not trying to make it that.

We shouldn't expect a Windows 95 user to be able to install Linux in
an afternoon and never have to do any configuration at all. If they
can get Linux up and running with suitable applications to keep them
happy, they may never feel the need to do appropriate administration.
I've seen this in action. It's a horrible site to see the state that
a Linux box gets to after 4 to five months of non-administration.
Linux *is* a unix like system that requires a certain amount of
administration just like any other unix system. Don't get me wrong.
I have nothing against great, user-friendly tools to make
administration easier, but I don't think the computer should be left
to administer itself completely. What will the user do in 3 months
when something goes wrong (as things do inevitably happen)? He or she
might not even know where to begin looking let alone be able to fix
the problem. Unix boxes need administrators.

I do see a case for user-friendly apps and such that allow *users* to
use the system without any need to learn unix, but I see this in a
multi-user environment such as an office or department where there is
a system administrator *somewhere* who is responsible for upkeep. For
machines that will sit on a desktop and only ever have one user, that
one user *must* learn to be the administrator. Either that or they
could just reinstall from scratch every time something goes wrong?

I don't know. Linux is a very powerful OS, and part of its power
comes from its flexibility and configurability. I don't know of a
good way to have an "automatic" OS that is also as flexible and
powerful. Along the same lines, I think adding simplicity to dselect
to help new users get started is great, but I don't think any of the
power of dselect should be taken way. It is a very powerful tool once
you learn how to use it. Making it more intuitive would be something
nice that wouldn't affect functionallity.

Forgive my rambling, or just fire away. Just adding my two cents.

The problem is that xdm uses xrdb to read these configuration files
in. xrdb has been broken for a while. It crashes if run with no
options. My solution was to mv xrdb to xrdb.bin and create a shell
script named xrdb that run xrdb.bin with the -nocpp option.

sendmail inconjuntion with procmail as the local delivery agent works
beautifully. In fact, if you don't use any of the filtering features
of procmail, it will deliver mail without interference in the same way
that deliver does, but it will notify consat too.

I just have the line:

Well, I have two answers:

1. On a 386/sx with 4MB of RAM the ability to load modules (sound
alone is 160K) only when you need them means a lot less swapping.
Granted, the ideal solution would be to add more memory, but many of
us are poor. A person with low memory can benfit a lot by making
lightly used drivers into modules (ppp, floppy, sound, etc...).

2. Some drivers can't be used effectivly unless they are module. For
example, on my system, I have 2 parallel ports. One I use for my
printer. The other I use with plip. These 2 drivers (lp and plip)
are mutually exclusive when compiled into the kernel. The first one
that loads would requisition all of the printer ports. The second
would then fail to find any ports. With modules, I can say, "lp use
port 1, plip use port 2".

Just my 2 cents...

Several people have suggested various ways to solve this. The correct
(and somewhat obscure) way to fix this is to upgrade to >= 2.1.14 or
go back down to 2.0.x or a stable 2.1.x. This is a bug in the kernel,
strangly enough, with the #! construct. It has been solved in 2.1.14

diald bug

1996-12-02 Thread edwalter
Hello. I am getting (and have been getting) the following error from
diald (taken from the log):

Dec 2 00:11:24 sigma diald[388]: Nonzero exit status (7) on command
'/sbin/route add default gw 127.0.0.2 metric 2000 dev sl1'

Now, someone once told me to just ignore this as it wasn't a problem.
However, I now realize that in conjunction with this error, the
default route is not getting re-created. Therefore, once the link
goes down once, it will never go back up automatically. It does still
work fine using the control fifo, signals, or by creating the
appropriate route by hand. Is there a fix for this or a way around.
I know that you can tell diald to run a script instead of the above
route command, but I haven't tried to create a replacement for the
default behavior yet.

Thanks,
Erv

I am still having problems with init. My computer is up to date with
unstable. sysvinit was one of the many things that got upgraded in a
flurry last week. Now, programs that don't put themselves in the
background get killed before the gettys are started. For example, the
software watchdog and slattach. I have tried putting these in
/etc/init.d/ (in an appropriate format) and in /etc/rc.boot/. In both
cases they get killed. For watchdog, I am using the unmodified script
from the distribution, and it still doesn't work. I have tried using
nohup, but this does not help. Does anyone have any suggestions. If
not, I will have to downgrade sysvinit.

I am having some trouble with my bootup sequence. Specifcally,
slattach is getting killed some time between when it gets started and
when the login prompt appears. I have tried using nohup, but this has
no effect. slattach still gets killed. slattach is getting started.
I have put some ps's in various locations and it is there and stays
there until the it get's killed somehow during the init process. I
have tried putting it in /etc/rc.boot and in /etc/init.d/ using
standard formats in each case, but it gets killed both times. This
was not a problem a week ago. The only relevant thing that has
changed is that sysvinit was upgraded a couple days ago?

Any help would be appreciated.

Almost every kernel that have looked in (including 2.0.x) looks in
/usr/include.

Anytime a file needs an include file it it referenced lise this:

#include

This is /usr/include/linux/whatever.h. It is assumed by Linus,
et. al., that /usr/include/linux, /usr/include/asm, and
/usr/include/asm-i386 will all be symlinks to the actual kernel
source. The only solution for me has been to move the offender out of
the way and temporarily create the expected symlinks while I compile
the kernel and then put everything back when I am done. I have put
this in a script since I try to keep up with the 2.1.x kernels and
have to compile somewhat frequently, but this is still kind of a
pain. Maybe someone else can tink of some better solution/compromise.

How did you move files around? if you used tar without the "preserve
uid, gid, permissions" flag, then tar may have reset all of the
ownerships, and permissions to root and your umask.

This would definitly screw up MUAs, etc.

This happened to me once. The only solution (besides manaully
changing all the ownerships, permissions) was to redo the move with
the proper args. Fortunatly I hadn't erased the original tree yet.

Good Luck,

If you originally specified that you didn't want xdm runa s a default
and you later change your mind about running xdm, you must do the
following things:

First, edit /etc/X11/config and change the no-start-xdm to start-xdm
if you want xdm started at bootup. Change no-xdm-start-server to
xdm-start-server if you want xdm to start a local server instead of
only accepting remote requests.

Second, anytime you make changes to this file, you should run
/usr/sbin/xbase-configure. This will update all other files as needed
(including /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers).

This should solve your problems. I hope this helps...

Most recent Beta of SVGA X Server

1996-10-06 Thread edwalter
Is there any possibility of someone making a deb file of the most
recent beta of SVGA Server for X (beta G). The reason I ask is that I
have a TGUI9440AGi that is not supported at all except in the recent
betas...

If someone would tell me how, I would be willing to do it.
