MISSING_REVERSE_DNS:RE: [Declude.JunkMail] Junkmail settings?

2002-01-30 Thread Paul

How would spamcop know how much legitimate email comes from a server. I've
had very poor experience with the spamcop test.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

The SPAMCOP test, however, has a very low false positive
rate. That's because it compares the amount of spam a mail server sends to
the amount of legitimate mail that is sent from it. So a couple of spam
reports won't trigger the SPAMCOP test, but if there is a fair amount of
spam and no legitimate mail coming from the mail server, it will get listed.

MISSING_REVERSE_DNS:RE: [Declude.JunkMail] IPSwitch email failed SPAMCOP

2002-01-30 Thread Paul

It seems to me that SpamCop black-lists any servers that reported spam comes
from.

I stopped using spamcop because I found them black listing AOL servers and
then mail from AOL customers is rejected. The spam may come from AOL
servers, and one could argue that AOL should do more to stop the spammers
from signing up for 400 free hours (in a month?), but when my own customers
can't email me . . .

Ah -- that is Ipswitch. Going to the URL shows that some bozos signed up
for a free trial of WhatsUp Gold, and reported Ipswitch for sending them
"spam" asking how the evaluation was going. Since Ipswitch apparently
sends bulk mailings from a special server, Spamcop couldn't take into
account all the "good" E-mail that gets sent out.

I do not know about version 7 of Imail but I do know that you have stop and restart
the SMTP process in earlier versions for any additions to the control access list and
I always assumed the same held true for the kill.lst.

No, but I have seen several blank E-mails come from the IMail list before.

That's exactly what we've seen before, too.

This shows that IMail received a completely blank E-mail before Declude saw
it (the Received: header is added by the SMTP Daemon that receives the
E-mail before Declude gets it).

And this confirms it. The "143" is the number of bytes in the E-mail, and
without actually counting, I'm guessing there are 143 bytes in that one
Received: header (OK, I'm lazy!).

All signs point to a problem on their end.

[Declude.JunkMail] Empty email from imail list

Sorry for those two weird posts -- our mail server stopped responding (the

RE: [Declude.JunkMail] Spam Review and Kill File

2002-01-30 Thread Don Schreiner

Tom,

I would want 2 separate button options.

1. Button to the delete & Kill list.
2. Button to the Delete folder only.

Not 100% for sure but a warning in the documentation about having the
%MAILFROM% variable in your header as Scott was stating in a previous
post. Does this address the issue of identifying the "real" from address
that we would want to add to the Kill list?

I like the idea of the Kill list vs. Declude Blacklist if it saves on
the CPU. However, I would want to be more certain it was a "real" from
address and not a bogus one. Like the earlier post... most of those
from addresses are bogus.

Let's talk about the IMail "kill.lst" file for just a minute.

Some of you suggested that you wanted to add "from" email addresses to
the
"kill.lst" file from SpamReview. I like this idea and am working on it.

My question is...

How do you want it to work?

Do you want a button to do it?

Do you want an option in Settings for adding it whenever you click on

I always thought you must recycle the SMTP for any change
in Imail, rules.ima, kill.lst, etc. I think this may be
because some of these settings are held in memory for speed.
http://support.ipswitch.com/kb/IM-19990624-DM02.htm
shows the requirement for kill.lst

Suppose you could have a setting that would allow you
to use a Declude blacklist rather than the kill.lst, seeing
how this might be more effective and this is dynamic, not
requiring a SMTP service recycle to be effective... Here
is how it would work.

1. click on 'Blacklist' Button
2. Up pops a dialog with the MAILFROM string
3. Edit the string to be used then click OK

In the settings you have a path and name to the
Blacklist file to be used. This could default to
c:\Imail\kill.lst but could be edited to say,
c:\Imail\Declude\Blacklist.txt

Looking at how Scott commented today on the more effective
blacklist functions by Declude it might work better where
kill.lst may save processor use. The only other thing about
the Declude Blackilist is that it may require a 'description'?
I do not know if this is required. Like in manual:

RE: [Declude.JunkMail] Spam Review and Kill File

2002-01-30 Thread R. Scott Perry

>I use the "D" file for the list so I think I have the right email address.
>Is this correct Scott?

The correct address to use in the IMail Kill List is the "return address"
or "MAIL FROM:" address, which may or may not be the same as the "From:"
address in the E-mail headers (in the "D" file).

Declude JunkMail has a %MAILFROM% variable that can add the return address
to a header (such as "XINHEADER X-Sender: %MAILFROM%").

Re[2]: [Declude.JunkMail] Spam Review and Kill File

2002-01-30 Thread Roger Heath

Reply to: Chuck Schick
Re: [Declude.JunkMail] Spam Review and Kill File on Wednesday 6:30:12 PM

2002-01-30 Thread Tom Schwarz

I use the "D" file for the list so I think I have the right email address.
Is this correct Scott?

This was my thought. If you delete the email you are saying it is spam.
Why would you not want to add it to the kill.lst file? However, it has
already been noted that you might want to change it just in case.

I would prefer a separate button. Because when I delete something I don't
necessarily want to kill the address. But when I kill the address I would

Re: [Declude.JunkMail] Spam Review and Kill File on Wednesday 6:15:27 PM

A button would be great. The problem as I see it is
making sure it was the real SMTP %MailFrom% variable.
I use:

XINHEADER X-Note: SMTP Real-From: %MAILFROM%

But maybe the best way for you to do this is take into
consideration the 'D' file that is being viewed than take
the value rom the 'Q' file of the same name, e.g. line
with : S<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sometimes you could,
I suppose, make it for the whole address or a whole domain..
or simply popup a dialog so the string could be edited
before saving to kill.lst.

Re: [Declude.JunkMail] Declude 1.35a released

2002-01-30 Thread R. Scott Perry

>. I can not download 135a... on the website it is still 135

It's listed on the website as 1.35. We've found that too many people
interpret version numbers so widely, that it's often easiest to do
something like this, where we're just going to refer to both versions as
1.35. The "Declude -diag" will show 1.35a, in case there is any question
as to which version is being run.

You'd be surprised how many times we release a "2.15" (as an example), and
people will assume it's really "2.15a" or "2.15b". Or, we release a
"2.15a" or "2.15b" and people assume it's 2.15.

That's what I'm guessing.

That's exactly why I suspect that Outlok has moved the headers around:

The first 4 headers it lists are the 4 that it would likely display on the
screen.

Normally, you have the original headers, followed by the Declude headers,
followed by the delivery headers (X-RCPT-TO: and X-UIDL:). In this case,
they are all mixed up with the original headers.

IMail will add the Message-ID: header if it was not present. That's the
format of IMail's Message-ID: header, so it looks like it wasn't included.

Do you have the full headers of the E-mail, in the original order? If the
Message-ID: header is that last line before the Declude headers, and is in
the format above, then it was almost certainly added by IMail because there
was originally no Message-ID: header.

Hmmm. I updated my Global.Cfg and I think there is a bug.
I still don't have weight notices in my headers. I have:

WEIGHT10HOLD
WEIGHT20HOLD
WEIGHT25HOLD
WEIGHT30HOLD

WEIGHT10WARNX-RBL-Warning: %TESTSFAILED%.
WEIGHT20WARNX-RBL-Warning: %TESTSFAILED%.
WEIGHT25WARNX-RBL-Warning: %TESTSFAILED%.
WEIGHT30WARNX-RBL-Warning: %TESTSFAILED%.

I know I have 1.35a verified via -diag.

2002-01-30 Thread R. Scott Perry

>WEIGHT10HOLDX-RBL-Warning: %TESTSFAILED%.

That won't work. The HOLD action doesn't take any extra information (in
the future, it may accept a directory name, but it doesn't accept anything
at this time). If you use:

 WEIGHT10WARNX-RBL-Warning: %TESTSFAILED%

Then a warning would get added to the headers with the list of tests.

FYI, this is a good idea -- I just added it here as a test, and it's nice
to see the list all on one line like that.

and I get lines like these in my awesome new Spam Review Message Header box:

I'm having trouble getting any work done, what with trying to see the screen

(with a little tweaking).
Changes I see that could be made would be that the temp store-to

and take out the HTML body view option and look at just the base text.

Or am I just not thinking ahead of potential problems?

That depends.

The test definitions ("WEIGHT10 weight x x ...") go in the global.cfg file.

The actions for outgoing mail also go in the global.cfg file.

The actions for incoming mail will go in the
\IMail\Declude\$default$.JunkMail file (unless you are using per-domain or
per-user settings, in which case they may go in other files).

RE: [Declude.JunkMail] Spam Review Question

I second this requested feature about adding to the Kill List. Great
Idea!

Also, I like the idea of sending to Spam Cop vs. the sender because will
surely have a lot of bounces.

Also, I think this is great you wrote the app and will not mind sending
a donation to you. Keep up the great job. Love the app so far.

Actually, the next most useful feature for me would
be to take the real sender and add-to-kill.lst function.
Then if you consistently see an abuser, you just add his
address to Imails kill file... This also ultimately reduces
server load as well, as mail is simply rejected rather than
processed...

This line gives me the 'real' sender and I'd love to kill.lst
some of these if they are clearly doing only spamming...:

XINHEADER X-Note: SMTP Real-From: %MAILFROM%

I do not see an immediate need to notify senders of bad mail.

2002-01-30 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi,

I'm using 1.05.

I've never had anything display in that window.

Thanks,
Andy Baldwin

RE: [Declude.JunkMail] Spam Review Question

2002-01-30 Thread Andy Schmidt

Yes, actually, I would love to be able to just forward/redirect the message
to my SPAMCOP mailbox. I currently do that automatically with Declude for
Weight 20 and above.

Then SPAMCOPY will figure out who REALLY is to notify - because sending it
back to the originator in 99 out of 100 times will result in a bounce. The
sending email address is never valid.

Best Regards

Re: [Declude.JunkMail] Spam Review Question on Wednesday 9:38:23 AM

Actually, the next most useful feature for me would
be to take the real sender and add-to-kill.lst function.
Then if you consistently see an abuser, you just add his
address to Imails kill file... This also ultimately reduces
server load as well, as mail is simply rejected rather than
processed...

This line gives me the 'real' sender and I'd love to kill.lst
some of these if they are clearly doing only spamming...:

XINHEADER X-Note: SMTP Real-From: %MAILFROM%

I do not see an immediate need to notify senders of bad mail.

RE: [Declude.JunkMail] Spamreview Update v1.0.4

2002-01-30 Thread Tom Schwarz

Thanks Andy. It's always good to hear a good word.

I make a living writing software but this project is different. May I
suggest, if you feel guilty, you make your payment in the form of a donation
to a good cause in either time or money.

Have a great day, Tom

Hi,

This little program has saved me so much time over the past few
days...what used to take an hours now takes minutes...reviewed all the
spam being held in about 3 minutes this morning...

This worth paying for.

Thanks,
Andy Baldwin
