[Bug 1555569] [NEW] Show human-readable names for store apps

2016-03-10 Thread David Planella
Private bug reported:

GNOME Software shows the package name from the app (the snap's name you
can't change in the store) instead of the human-readable one (the one
you can edit in the store).

That is, the entry in GNOME Software reads 'ubuntu-calculator-app'
instead of 'Calculator (Unity 7)'. The latter is specified as "Package
title" in the web UI, not sure which field name it's got in the store
API.

It seems, though, that snappy does not have the concept of a human-
readable name and it's using the "description" field for that. I'm not
sure if that's the intention, or if it's expected that any store clients
use the "Package title" from the store API instead.

snapd gives the following information for ubuntu-calculator-app (in this case,
sideloaded):
{
  "description" : "Ubuntu Calculator app",
  "download_size" : -1,
  "icon" : "/2.0/icons/ubuntu-calculator-app.sideload/icon",
  "installed_size" : 581341041,
  "name" : "ubuntu-calculator-app",
  "origin" : "sideload",
  "resource" : "/2.0/snaps/ubuntu-calculator-app.sideload",
  "status" : "active",
  "type" : "app",
  vendor" : "",
 "version" : "IOBXFFOCRcXL"
}

>From James Tait:

The human-readable package display name, “Package name” in the upload
form, maps to the title field in the store API and takes its data from
the same field in a Click manifest, but seemingly has no equivalent in a
Snap manifest. The closest field in snap.yaml appears to be summary, but
I was intending to extract that to tagline and fix bug #1303354 so we
can surface that in the store API.

The description field in the store API maps to the “Tagline” and
“Description” fields in the upload form, and takes its data from the
title and description fields in Click manifests, and the description
field in Snap manifests.

The name field in the store API maps to the unchangeable package name
in the store web UI, and takes its data from the same field in both
Click and Snap manifests, with the author’s short namespace appended if
the extracted package name is unqualified.

It seems that while the upstream package is set up for translations, the
source package at
https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/saucy/+source/indicator-

William,

- Could you look into getting the package to generate a .pot file as the rest

Actually, NetworkManager translations come from Freedesktop.org, and it
seems that upstream translations are not complete:

So the importer works fine for this particular one.

[Bug 1057767] Re: Translations are not in sync with Gnome

2012-10-11 Thread David Planella
So after some investigation, I've found out that this is related to
upstream sharing.

- For evolution, the issue is that upstream uses a versioned template
name (e.g. evolution-3.6.pot), whereas in Ubuntu, to benefit from
message sharing across distro releases, we use an unversioned template
name (i.e. evolution). This means that upstream sharing will not work
for Evolution, as the two templates (upstream/downstream) need to have
the same name. I've disabled upstream sharing for Evolution for now, so
that translations are imported from packages as they used to do.

- For Orca, the upstream template name was ac-package-name, which points
to a bug in upstream sharing. I've now corrected it manually to orca,
which means upstream translations should now be imported, but we'll see
if the name stays when the next byr import happens.

- For GTK+, the issue was that the template names (upstream/downstream)
didn't match. I've now edited the upstream template name to match the
Ubuntu one, so that sharing happens.

- For evolution-data-server, the problem was that the upstream bzr
import was still set to SVN. I've corrected it to be for git, but we're
having the same issue as Evolution with versioned template names.

 To sum up what's below, Evolution translations are not in sync with

 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1057767

 Is it working as intended or is there something going wrong ?

Hi Pierre,

Sorry for the delay in replying, I just found some time to look into
this issue.

Evolution is set to use bzr imports from the upstream GNOME branch. This
way, the PO files are imported directly from bzr and shared with Ubuntu,
which makes (in theory) new translations be imported daily.

However, there seems to be something wrong with the upstream bzr import,
as it's creating 3 versioned translatable templates, which means
translations from the branch are not imported.

For now, I've disabled upstream sharing for the evolution template, and
translations should be imported using the traditional package upload
mechanism.

Cheers,
David.

 Subject: [Bug 1057767] [NEW] Translations are not in sync with Gnome,
 leading to duplication of effort
 To: pierre.slam...@gmail.com mailto:pierre.slam...@gmail.com

 Public bug reported:

 French for instance is fully translated upstream and has 500+ strings
 remaining in Ubuntu
 http://l10n.gnome.org/vertimus/evolution/gnome-3-6/po/fr

 Wondering whether it might affect other GNOME packages and even other
 kind of packages.
 Despite our best effort to educate about duplication and upstream
 contribution, people are redoing the work on LP, so a proper and
 frequent sync is essential (now and for the next cycle)

[Bug 1057767] Re: Translations are not in sync with Gnome, leading to duplication of effort

2012-10-09 Thread David Planella
Looking at it in more detail, it seems that there is not much we can do
with Evolution, other than disabling upstream message sharing and going
back to the traditional way of importing translations with package
uploads. This is due to the upstream template name being versioned [1].

However, there might be a bug in the Orca import [2], which shows an
invalid template name.

[Bug 1063170] Re: Not translatable string Purchased from Ubuntu One in Rhythmbox

2012-10-09 Thread David Planella
After a chat with the Ubuntu One guys, here's the situation:

- The name shown in Rhythmbox (Purchased from Ubuntu One) comes from the name
of the folder in the file system
- Changing the name of the Purchased from Ubuntu One folder (i.e. making it
translatable) might then break sync with systems with a different locale
- Simply making the string translatable in Rhythmbox would mean modifying the
Rhythmbox code to allow translatable names for monitored folders.

[Bug 1060601] Re: [FFe]: Update rhythmbox from 2.97 to 2.98

2012-10-03 Thread David Planella
A way to easily check the impact on translations would be to do a diff
between the msgid fields in the .pot file generated by the 2.97 package
vs. the one generated by the 2.98 package. Could someone take care of
that?

[Bug 1056698] [NEW] Shotwell provides an invalid .pot file and translations cannot be imported into Launchpad

2012-09-26 Thread David Planella
Public bug reported:

Looking at the Shotwell imports queue [1], the shotwell.pot template
cannot be imported due to it being invalid. It contains duplicate msgid
without msgctxt, which is not supported in gettext:

#: src/photos/RawSupport.vala:297 src/MediaPage.vala:413
msgid Shotwell
msgstr

#: misc/shotwell.application:2
msgid Shotwell
msgstr

I believe that might be because of the fact that we simply append the
second msgid as a fix for bug 1052375?

[Bug 1054746] Re: [FFe] [UIFe] No easy way to disable (results from) this lens

2012-09-26 Thread David Planella
+1 from the translations team, as I think such an important feature
shouldn't block on translations. Please do send an e-mail to the ubuntu-
doc and ubuntu-translators mailing lists as per the UIFe procedure,
though.

In any case, if as Iain suggests, the messages shown to the user could
be generic enough so that existing translations could be used, that'd be
a plus for translators.

[Bug 1055273] Re: Need Translating into Simplified Chinese

2012-09-25 Thread David Planella
Thanks for reporting this bug.

Could you please be more specific on what the actual issue is? Are
translations not loaded? Is there simply a delay in translations done
upstream? Are you talking about GUI or help files?

The more accurate you are, the more helpful we can be in fixing the
issue.

[Bug 1046461] Re: [UIFe][FFe] Shotwell integration with Online Accounts, bug 1046461

 Hi all!
   I'm requesting a freeze exception to land a couple of improvements to
 the integration of Shotwell with Online Accounts:

 (the context is uploading an image from Shotwell to some online service
 supported by Online Accounts)

 * The service selector should display multiple entries for the service
 with the username associated with the account in the selector.

 * As last option in the service selection we add Add new account...,
 which opens the Online Account applet.

 * Login/Logout button in the publishing dialog isn't necessary anymore,
 it's now removed.

 Ciao,
   Alberto

Multiple account support is broken, if a user has more than one account
for facebook it just uses the first account returned from UOA.

This sounds like a serious bug that needs fixing. +1 from translators.

Cheers,
David.

And the same applies for the Ubuntu wiki articles in the original
report, so if this is an issue you're concerned about, please feel free
to update them as well with a note on the unexpected behaviour.

I'm sure users landing there will benefit from your contributions,
thanks!

[Bug 940583] Re: Terminal Ctrl+u doesn't clear the line

2012-02-25 Thread David Planella
Vadim, thanks for the heads up.

However, Askubuntu is a community site, so please, feel free to do the
changes or add a comment there yourself. Thanks!

As per the bug itself, it's a technical defect that should be filed
against the application in Ubuntu, rather than an issue the Ubuntu
Community Team should resolve.

Thanks.

[Bug 792636] Re: [FFE] [UIFE] [Regression] Power section no longer allows configuration of when the lid is closed action in Oneiric

2011-09-15 Thread David Planella
I think it's important to provide this functionality again, and the fact
that we need a new string is secondary on this particular case, so
translations shouldn't be blocking the update.

+1 from the translations side

 Milo: right, I remember the same happening to the Hungarian xchat a few

 Maybe this string is it:

 -%C10-%C11-%O$t%C12[%O$1%C12]%O $2
 -%C10-%C11-%O$t%C12[%O$1%C12]%0 $2

 The last %O is translated as %0, this is suspicious.

Good work in spotting this Gabor.

Could someone in the Spanish team fix that string?

Then testers could export the .mo file from Launchpad, install it
in /usr/share/locale-langpack/es_CL/LC_MESSAGES and see if the crashes
are still reproduceable.

[Bug 763042] Re: Personal File Sharing Preferences dialog shows untranslated because gnome-user-share.mo is missing

2011-04-17 Thread David Planella
Yes, it's exactly as Gabor said. seb128 noticed that it needed to be
reuploaded for translations to be delivered in language packs and we
talked about it last week. The package was then uploaded stripping
translations as any other translatable app in main, and the translations
will then be delivered in the next language pack.

I'll mark it thus as Invalid, but feel free to reopen it if after the
next language packs it is still missing.

[Bug 753311] Re: In Portuguese language, Keyboard shortcut's information text has large gap between each word

2011-04-17 Thread David Planella
This is due to the text being justified in that particular label. Since
the next word is relatively long ('correspondente') does not fit in the
first line, the space needs to be filled with extra spaces.

This can be only but worked around in the translation: reword the
translation so it gets better arranged in a justified text. Subscribing
the Brazilian translators to have a look at it.

[Bug 659051] Re: Evince missing translation for save current settings as default

2011-03-15 Thread David Planella
Is this bug still present?

We should investigate why this happened (is the package not generating a
.pot file perhaps?), but one thing we can do in the meantime is to
manually upload the upstream POT template and with a bit of luck the
strings will be shipped in next week's Maverick language pack update.
