[Bug 357688] [NEW] metacity new window has/hasn't focus usually wrong
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: metacity I have focus mode in metacity set to strict. In intrepid, this meant that new windows that popped up immediately would get focus, but if I was doing something else they would not. A typical scenario is with the browser: I might click on a link in Evolution, Xchat, or Liferea, and a browser window would open, but only 5-10 seconds later (on a slow laptop). If I didn't do anything after clicking, the new window would have focus. If I kept typing or clicking, the original window would have focus. In jaunty, this no longer works. New windows get or don't get focus seemingly always the wrong way. I've mistakenly clicked on the wrong window several times already today, having upgraded to jaunty last night. This is becoming a big headache for me. A smaller problem is that sometimes dialog windows are now hidden behind other windows when earlier they would have shown up, with or without focus. ProblemType: Bug Architecture: i386 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04 Package: metacity 1:2.25.144-0ubuntu2 ProcEnviron: PATH=(custom, user) LANG=fi_FI.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: metacity Uname: Linux 2.6.28-11-generic i686 ** Affects: metacity (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: apport-bug i386 -- metacity new window has/hasn't focus usually wrong https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/357688 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to metacity in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-control-center My laptop has a 10.6 inch screen (1280*768). At home, I have a 22 inch external screen (1680*1050) attached to it. gnome-display-properties does not let me set things up so that the screens are mirrored, and the resolution is set to the maximum of the external screen. Instead, it wants to set things up as 1024*768. This worked in intrepid, until some weeks ago, when the same behavior started happening there, but I never reported the problem. If I run xrandr --output VGA --mode 1680x1050 manually, I get the screens set up the way I want. [Bug 357694] Re: gnome-display-properties doesn't let me use external monitor's full resolution in mirror mode
Mirroring means, or used to mean and should mean, that the two screens show the same thing. Before, the laptop screen would show only as much as would fit into the top left corner of the full resolution. This is good for me because when I unplug the external monitor, the screen has useful stuff on it. It is also good because I have no use for the small laptop screen while at my desk in the office: the screen is small enough that I'd have to have the laptop in my lap and that interferes with being comfortable. Having the screens not be mirrored also means that the computer (metacity? something) occasionally wants to put things on the _other_ screen, which is small and far away, and forces me to deal with that. It's much easier for me to just have mirrored screens. Also, since xrandr(1) can do it, and it is clearly supported by both hardware and software, gnome-display-properties should be able to do it as well. ** Changed in: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = New -- gnome-display-properties doesn't let me use external monitor's full resolution in mirror mode https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/357694 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

What should happen: gedit should not freeze. Diagnosis: gedit outputs stuff to the standard output. Being backgrounded, this freezes the process, thereby freezing the window as well. [Bug 291881] Re: Search folders have the wrong Unread count
I get this too, all the time, since I upgraded to intrepid on Friday. At times, a folder might display negative message counts (my Unread mail (local) folder is showing -7 messages right now), and might display several new mails in the folder list, when in fact there are no new mails. Worst is that sometimes a search folder shows no new mail when there is, in fact some new mail in it. Since my e-mail processing has relied on Evolution's search folders for some years now, this is having a pretty big impact on my effectiveness when processing large batches of e-mail. ** Changed in: evolution (Ubuntu) Status: New = Confirmed -- Search folders have the wrong Unread count https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/291881 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 160996] Re: evince has trouble handling filename with escaped shell characters
Mike, you're right, I did not escape the colon in a way that changes what the program gets. I just tried that, it doesn't matter. There are, of course, ways of entering the filename in a way that makes evince (or other GNOME) programs be able to open them. One can enter the path in a way to have a slash before the colon (./foo:bar.pdf) or even a file:// url. However, the documentation (manpage, --help) claims that evince accepts filenames and that is clearly wrong. Evince accepts more than just filenames, and some valid filenames are interepreted wrongly. This can be fixed via, for example, fixing the documentation to clearly say that the programs accept filenames or URLs. This, at least, would make it obvious to the user that the colon may be a problem. (I'm also having a hard time seeing why this bug is incomplete, fixing that...) -- evince has trouble handling filename with escaped shell characters https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/160996 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 155733] metacity focus stealing prevention does not seem to be working at all
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: metacity There are some other bugs reported about focus stealing in metacity, but this seems like a new thing: I've asked around and it seems that prevention of focus stealing worked in releases before 7.10 (gutsy). It does not seem to work for me at all. *Every* time any application opens a new window, it gets focus, even if I'm furiously typing into the previously active window. This is very annoying with some applications, such as update-manager, which open several dialog-type windows for progress bars and such. Since the whole update process happens relatively often, and can take minutes in total, this is almost completely preventing me from doing any useful work while it is going on. However, it also happens with, say, windows for plugged in USB sticks, browser windows (whether because the browser take tens of seconds to start up or popup windows on sites), and all other sorts of windows so far. ** Affects: metacity (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- metacity focus stealing prevention does not seem to be working at all https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/155733 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for metacity in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 150959] epiphany resizes its window
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: epiphany-browser Epiphany resizes its window on its own, instead of keeping the size I set it at. This is not a matter of Javascript tricks on the pages, it happens even on completely pure HTML pages. I'm using Gutsy, up to date as of yesterday. I have disabled desktop effects, i.e., I'm using metacity, not compiz. The scenario: I browse around with the Epiphany window set to about half the width of my screen. I have a small laptop screen, and that size is pretty much optimal for me, text-width-wise. This also lets me see more stuff than just the browser (such as IRC or e-mail). It's fairly important to me that things are set up this way on the screen. So, there I am, reading through e-mail, and clicking on links in e-mails, and new browser windows open up. The new windows are of the correct size. Everything is well. When I'm through reading e-mails, I go look at the browser windows, which in the mean time have finished downloading the page content. As soon as I click on one, it resizes itself to be full size (same as maximized window, except it isn't maximized, and the window still has border decorations). This is the part that is a bug. It's driving me nuts, having to resize the windows manually all the time. It doesn't happen every time, either. I have not yet been able to determine a pattern when it does happen. The page where it happened just now, and which finally triggered me to file this bug, is http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000970.html . If this is a feature, I'd like a way to disable it. FWIW, this didn't happen in Debian unstable, as of two weeks ago, when I switched the laptop to run Ubuntu. ** Affects: epiphany-browser (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- epiphany resizes its window https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/150959 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for epiphany-browser in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
