[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1673567] [NEW] No location provider for geoclue when on PC

2017-03-16 Thread Rodney Dawes
Public bug reported:

There is currently no provider for location-service which can provide
location when using Unity 8 on a PC without a GPS chip. This means apps
and features which rely on a location can never really work properly. We
should probably have a geoclue provider to take advantage of all the
available providers for it, under Unity 8.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1538180] Re: wireless indicator icon animates continuously and consumes 10%+ CPU unnecessarily

2017-01-26 Thread Rodney Dawes
Removing indicator-application. Problem here is that nm-applet is
spewing icons across dbus and updating the menu constantly. Compiz has
to redraw the area for every icon change, and that eats CPU. nm-applet
has always had this problem, even under gnome2, for the animated
connecting icon.

Feature Request: special Browser window for logging in to WiFi
  Hotspots

Status in Canonical System Image:
  Confirmed
Status in indicator-network package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
Problem occurs with: Ubuntu, all versions
Does not occur with: Fedora 21 and later, elementary OS 0.3 and later, OS X
10.7 and later

WiFi Hotspots normally redirect all traffic to a special IP address which
provides a Welcome page with a login form. Accessing this server with another
protocol does not work, which is not a problem for POP3, IMAP or SSH, but it is
a problem if you connect by https, because your browser will recognise the
wrong security certificate or the port is not even used (which is even better
in my opinion).
  1) So if I open a browser it automatically tries to open its Start page which
is https in my case (I use the HTTPS Everywhere plugin in my firefox). Because
it uses https, I will not be redirected to the login page and am waiting in
front of an empty page. Then I manually have to open a link which does not use
https and get redirected to the login page.
  2) Another annoying thing are other users who open a saved browser session.
All saved (http-)tabs will be redirected to the welcome page so that it does
not make any sense anymore to save the browser session.
  3) Firefox also sometimes does compatibility checks and plugin updates at
start time. These also fail when trying to login to a Hotspot network.

How can we solve this problem?

First, network manager should check if the connected wireless network is a
Hotspot network. This chan be done by a simple http request to a stable and
well-known page, for example http://gnome.org/netcheck which returns a known
token (something like "Yes, you are connected to the Internet").
  - If the token is returned, everything is fine and the user has connection
  - If it does not receive this token but a redirect, it should open a special
browser-window (not the default browser because of the reasons above) which
allows to log-in to the network before other internet applications are started.
  - In any other case, network manager could try another server (backup) or
stop probing.

For known wireless networks, network manager could also provide a
  setting to disable/autodetect/force hotspot login.

  : "Whenever Ubuntu
makes a new network connection, if 'Prompt whenever a new connection
requires Web login' is checked, it should perform HTTP and DNS checks
that the connection is valid. If it is not..."

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1099972] Re: Bluetooth devices are not able to control and display playing music from apps and web apps consistently

2017-01-12 Thread Rodney Dawes
Moved this to media-hub, which is the actual music playing back-end. The
indicator is simply a view on top of that, as would be any connected car
stereo or other device.

** No longer affects: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu)

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1099972

Title:
Bluetooth devices are not able to control and display playing music
from apps and web apps consistently

Status in media-hub package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
My car is a bluetooth device. I can pair my phone with the car, and
then playing music on the phone will use the car as a bluetooth
headset and play the music through the car's speakers. The car can
also display the name of the playing music on its screen (passed over
Bluetooth) and skip to next and previous song via buttons on the
steering wheel (with the next/previous command passed over Bluetooth).

An Ubuntu phone has the ability to play songs, including from web
applications. At the moment, some music playing apps on Ubuntu can
respond to a Bluetooth next/previous command from a paired Bluetooth
headset. However, perhaps the Sound Menu could take control of all
Bluetooth pairings. That way, all Bluetooth headset next/previous
commands would be passed to the Sound Menu, and the Sound Menu would
take care of passing those next/previous commands to the currently
playing app; similarly, the Sound Menu knows the name of the currently
playing song and could pass that information back over Bluetooth to
the headset/car and then the car can display the name. If the Sound
Menu handled this, then a music playing app on Ubuntu would merely
need to integrate itself with the Sound Menu and would have Bluetooth
headset support without any work in the app at all. This would also
work with web apps (for example, Grooveshark's HTML5 app) which have
Sound Menu integration, meaning that an Ubuntu phone would be able to
use Grooveshark's HTML5 app and control it from a Bluetooth device
while displaying the name of the playing song on that Bluetooth
device, something no other platform can do.

Note that this is useful beyond Bluetooth: other consumers of the
currently-playing metadata or music control will find this useful. A
phone welcome screen which shows the currently playing track and album
art would automatically work if it talked to the Sound Menu. Media
keys could be handled by the Sound Menu rather than every app
  individually.

This may not be specifically a Sound Menu issue; probably most of the
pieces to make this work in various places (the bluetooth stack, the
sound menu, mpris) are in place, but it would be good if the feature
were tested from end to end to ensure that all the pieces fit together
  and the feature worked.

the top bar, a "Keyboard layouts" page should open which lists (probably) all
the keyboard layouts available in Ubuntu desktop.
  2. Select a layout which is not yet available in Ubuntu Touch keyboard, for
example Bengali/ Hindi.

  What happens:
The selected layout appears inside the keyboard settings indicator now along
with a marked checkbox next to it. But the OSK doesn't list the selected layout
as expected.

  Expected:
The user should not be able to select these layouts when there's no external
keyboard attached, or at least the keyboard settings indicator should not show
this selected layout without an external keyboard. Otherwise this gives a false
impression about the availability of a missing layout.

  app-0.1+16.04.20160831/src/qml/messaging-app.qml: File not found"

(in my case, the file was in /snap/unity8-session/x24/usr/share
  /messaging-app/messaging-app.qml)

Seems due to code like the following in config.h.in. Probably needs
to consider the value of $SNAP or just be a little more forgiving.

  inline bool isRunningInstalled() {
  static bool installed = (QCoreApplication::applicationDirPath() ==

QDir(("@CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX@/@CMAKE_INSTALL_BINDIR@")).canonicalPath());
  return installed;
  }

  inline QString messagingAppDirectory() {
  if (isRunningInstalled()) {
  return QString("@CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX@/@MESSAGING_APP_DIR@/");
  } else {
  return QString("@CMAKE_SOURCE_DIR@/src/qml/");
  }
  }

  inline QString ubuntuPhonePluginPath() {
  if (isRunningInstalled()) {
  return QString::null;
  } else {
  return QString("@CMAKE_SOURCE_DIR@/");
  }
  }

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1556452] [NEW] 4K@60Hz DisplayPort 1.2 loses output modes

2016-03-12 Thread Rodney Dawes
Public bug reported:

I have a Dell UP2414Q 24" 4K display panel. The only way to achieve 60Hz
refresh on it, is to use DisplayPort 1.2 MST.

Due to MST, this results in two screens with 1920x2160 resolution being
exposed to X. In order to get back to a proper rendering where it looks
like a single display, one must either use Xinerama (with NVidia) or
Xorg 3.18 and the new xrandr with support for configuring monitors in
RandR 1.5 (with Intel). In both of these configurations, if the monitor
itself is powered off, the output modes will disappear from xrandr, and
when the monitor is powered back on, it behaves as though no output is
being sent to it over the DisplayPort connection. When connecting with
ssh to debug, running DISPLAY=:0 xrandr says that the two outputs exist,
but no modes are configured, and indeed it does not list any. If
however, instead of powering the monitor off, it is left on while away,
this does not occur upon return, and the display works normally as when
it was left.

  Wallpaper changes colors?

Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
For some reason Ubuntu seems to change the colors of the wallpaper you
  apply.

If you look at this album: http://imgur.com/a/wD4sx - You can see the
  following:

image 1 (from the top): Ubuntu shows the image correctly when opening in
image viewer (look at the orange color!)
image 2 (from the top): This is how the image looks applied. Why is it
changing the colors?
image 3: (the one in bottom): Windows 10 virtualbox. Windows can figure out
how to apply the colors correctly. Why can't Ubuntu.. ?

I have tested it with Xubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 16.04 daily,
Linux Mint and Ubuntu Gnome 15.10. They all have the same problem. As
soon as the wallpaper is applied it changes the colors from the orange
  to less-orange.. It really weird.

I can't figure out what's going on. It works just fine in Windows and OSX.

Click goes through scrollbar in GNOME 3.18

Status in Ubuntu GNOME:

Status in software-center package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I have noticed that with the new disappearing scroll bars in GNOME
3.18 that in the Ubuntu Software Center if I am looking at a list of
apps the scrollbar works fine unless I click to get more information
for an application and then return to a list of applications (that
doesn't matter if I just click the back button or if I navigate
somewhere else and then to another or the same list). Because when I
then go back to a list of applications (unless I restart the Ubuntu
Software Center) the scrollbar will appear but my click will go
straight through it and it will select whatever is behind it but I
will never be able to use it which is rather annoying. Though before
this wasn't happening all the time, now this is happening all the
  time.

Bug description:
  Enhancement request.

It would be good to provide an option to open an application
immediately after installing. It is natural to assume that after
installing a deb package (Manually downloaded package/ using the
software center) people would like to open that application
  immediately.

How to go about it: After the app is installed search for .desktop
files that the app installs (dpkg stuff). Launch that file if
  presents.

  Thanks & Regards,

I am running Zorin OS 9 64-bit edition on an Acer Aspire 5733Z laptop.

I figured it had something to do with an OS installation problem or
lack of software updates so I completely reinstalled Zorin OS 9 to
start fresh and updated software through the Software Updater. After a
restart, I selected the option to install software packaged by
Canonical for their partnters as well as the Source Code.

The issue still remains the same through all of this. The game just
  wont download..

Is there a series of commands I can use through the terminal to
  install it?

  Am I missing something here?

  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Bug description:
Installing Skype package (from skype.com) via software center creates
unclickable icon in Unity dash. Bug happens only with Unity and
Software Center. Installing package via gdebi or dpkg works fine.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1) Download skype-ubuntu-precise_4.3.0.37-1_i386.deb from skype.com

  2) Open it with software center (software center should be started as
normal user, not via sudo to reproduce this bug)

  3) Press install button

  4) Open dash (press super key), do not type anything (clear search
field if there is something there).

  5) Skype icon will be in recently accessed applications (strange, because it
was never launched, seems software center adds it there).

https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/1334021/+attachment/4138553/+files/Screenshot%20from%202014-06-25%2002%3A07%3A21.png

  6) Left click on it will not start skype. Nothing happens on left click.
Right click will show document icon, instead of skype button. There will be no
"Launch" button.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/1334021/+attachment/4138552/+files/Screenshot%20from%202014-06-25%2002%3A07%3A52.png

  7) It is possible to start skype by doing following: Start typing "skype" in
search bar. Now icon will become clickable. Right clicking also will work
correctly (skype icon and launch button present).

https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/1334021/+attachment/4138555/+files/Screenshot%20from%202014-06-25%2002%3A09%3A26.png

  8) Open dash again after starting skype. Clear search field. You will see two
skype icons: one is correct and clickable, second one is not.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/1334021/+attachment/4138554/+files/Screenshot%20from%202014-06-25%2002%3A08%3A28.png

  9) If you uninstall skype, this "wrong" icon (which doing nothing)
will be left in the system, but the "correct" icon will be removed. It
is possible to remove the "wrong" icon by going to Settings ->
"Security & Privacy" -> "Files & Applications" and pressing "Clear
  Usage Data".

Title:
Software Center doesn't show Dutch times correctly

Status in software-center package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  What I did:
Open Software Center and click on the history tab, to look at when I
installed what.

  What I expected:
Times to be shown in proper Dutch/European format, such as 17:00 for 5 PM.

  What I saw:
Times shown in an ambiguous 12h format, such as 5:00 for 5 PM and AM.

I've had this on Xubuntu 14.04 and elementary Luna, both on the same
  PC with arch x86_64

Title:
Ubuntu Software Center shows installed system apps

Status in software-center package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Hi,

I noticed some of the apps listed under "installed apps" in Ubuntu
Software Center are system apps as opposed to user apps. The ubuntu
software center shows a number of "system apps" alongside all the
"user apps" installed by me or pre-installed with ubuntu.

System Apps like compiz (window manager) and unity 8 (unity shell)
should never show up alongside a list of conventional user apps
because the novice ubuntu user might end up removing them by mistake
(which i did). There should be a seperate list in a seperate place for
system apps like these (also a warning "you are about to remove a
  system app" might be useful)

I guess i need an add/remove programs list where i can view/ modify or
remove only installed user apps. (Everthing installed by me or pre-
  installed when i installed ubuntu)

Status in software-center package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I opened software center, and selected "more" from the What's New
  list.

I scrolled to the bottom of the very bottom and selected the last item
("GStreamer plug-ins for aac, xvid, mpeg2, faad"). The scroll view
did not move downwards to show the "more info" and, in my case since I
had it installed, the "remove" buttons.

I then tried the same with "Top Rated" - from the app home screen, I
selected "more" from the "Top Rated" panel, scrolled to the bottom and
selected the last item ("gmusicbrowser", which I did not have
installed). The scroll view did scroll down so the "more info" and
  "install" buttons were visible.

I replicated the first behaviour (not scrolling down to show the
buttons) in the list of "Accessories", where I did not have the item
installed, so I don't think it's related to whether you have the item
  installed or not.

Title:
Proposed Change to Minimum Price amount

Status in software-center package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
This may not be a bug for the USC specifically, but rather the model
  used for purchases.

I think the minimum price needs to change in order to attract more
developers and consumers to the platform (this will be especially
important when mobile is launched for mainstream usage). I understand
why the minimum amount exists, and why it probably can't go away any
time soon, however I believe there is a way that will allow for both
small purchases, while still maintaining profit on small purchases.

Looking at the way the Playstation Network handles purchases, you add
a certain amount of money to your wallet, and this amount can be no
lower than $5.00 (at least in my country). So even if you are buying
something that coses $0.49, you need to add $5.00 to your wallet,
leaving 4.51 left over (before taxes). This balance can then be used
for future purchases until you run out, then you must add more money
  to your wallet.

If the above system is used for the USC (maybe $3.00 can be set as the
minimum amount added to a person's wallet), then they can buy several
smaller items from the store, and it would remain only a single credit
card transaction (at least on the user side).

Software-center does not ask for root password when needed.

Bug description:
  Hi,
As many users, I hate the way we now have to use the software center while
it's clearly not yet able to perform its task correctly, in contrary to
Synaptic for instance.
When clicking on an “apt”-link in Chromium or Firofex, the software center is
opened. OK, even if it's a huge software just to install a small program, why
not. But of course the program is launch without admin privileges. It works
and we are redirected to the page of the package we want to install. Of
course, the next step is to click on the “install” button.
At this point, what any reasonable person would expect is that the software
center ask for the root password and install the software. Can you explain to
me the reason the software center prefer to display an error “you do not have
the privileges”?!?
Is there a way to at least stop using this not-yet-able-to-perform-its-task
software by default, waiting for the next release of Ubuntu?
I don't know who thought it would be a good idea to set this software as
default, but if the reason was “it's better looking”, it was far from being a
good reason.
Martin, who hates softwares that can do more than what they are expected to
do, but not what they are expected to do.

  Software center crashes and lags

Status in software-center package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Hey everyone.

So I was trying to install a few things (Mainly LibreOffice),
at first I saw that the software center was laggy, I couldn't scroll the
window well.
But after some time I could finally click the install button, minimize the
window
  and listen to music.

But when I wanted to reopen the window my whole computer froze and I couldn't
do anything but to manually restart my computer...
Software center has been laggy on every use, I'll try to install LibreOffice
once again
but I'd like to find a solution for this.

So is this a known issue? I've had ubuntu for quite some time before, and
I've never
experienced any trouble using the software center. :/ I'll also add that all
the other
programs worked well and fast except for the software center.

  Greetings, Pixell.

Edit: SoftCenter couldn't repair the broken packages, but it seems
that it didn't mess with the installation of OpenOffice. The
  program(SC) still lags a lot. (even though I didn't experience a crash
  this time.)

Title:
Quick 'n Easy Web Builder serial fail

Status in software-center package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Once app is purchased, no confirmation or serial number is given:
  Quick 'n Easy Web Builder

This is fraud, when Ubuntu Software Centre takes funds from people,
but fail to deliver a serial code in order to run app.

This is a fundamental floor in the Ubuntu Centre, where something is
  broken in the purchase system.

There is no way to contact anyone

The Ubuntu Centre is meant to be a safe place to purchase software but
  it is not!

Title:
ubuntu-software-center functionality depends on /var/cache directory

Status in software-center package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
This is fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS. Fully updated.

I recently moved the /var/cache directory to tmpfs for my own reasons.
According to FHS [1] the /var/cache contents should be deletable. Also
according to an accepted answer on askubuntu.com [2] there should be
no problem on deleting the contents of /var/cache directory.

  Reproduce:

Move /var/cache to tmpfs via /etc/fstab by adding the following line

  tmpfs /var/cache tmpfs defaults,noatime,mode=1777 0 0

reboot your system and try to open ubuntu software center.

  What I expected to happen:

ubuntu software center recreates the folders/files that are needed in
order to function correctly (i.e. like apt does).
