Discussion on ComDev has cleared up the confusion. Jim, you and I are on point.
There's a mail in your inbox and we will report through ComDev.

Yes, Roberto offered to have SF host an Apache Neighborhood (??) for us, to
replace Apache-Extras. I put he and David in touch, since David was best to
know what exactly we needed and what the division of labor should be.

If David lacks the time to follow-up, I very much volunteer to take this up
again.

No it has not changed, but maybe I did not use the right words.

Our primary binaries (the executable) for "real" endusers are downloaded
from SF, but we have plenty of stuff on apache_extra (ooo extras) which
can be and are downloaded. Currently most of ooo_extras are targeted at
developers and not end-users, and especially that part of our community is
something we do not want to hurt.

It was not me personally, but the OpenOffice project as a whole. We are
now using http://sourceforge.net/projects/oooextras.mirror/files/ in the
OpenOffice trunk and it works for us (our needs are limited to storage

http://sourceforge.net/directory/apache_extras is the link to the latest

I don't know the reasons for choosing SF, but I'd highly recommend
putting serious consideration into GitHub. It's quite pleasant to work
with, and although I'm not a part of the apache-extras, I think those
who are would be quite satisfied with it (that's just my personal
opinion, of course).

It is my understanding that moving to SF from Google Code is a ComDev

done here, but AFAIK, no decision has been made.

I was involved at one point on behalf of Pivot (where we have several

involved (since they have a bunch of stuff there). But things have gone

pretty good (to us). But, I don't know the state of things now.

Sally we could weave this into the diversity angle, as a reminder I intend to
use the state of the feather to acknowledge that we have mostly failed to move
the needle on diversity in our community, that very little works (GSoC is a
good example of something that does work), accept we don’t have significant
cash resources to make a big difference and therefore we have invited TEALs to
present, organize a BOF and have a table in the expo area. TEALs help get
people like our vast army of volunteers into high schools to help improve CS
education. My hope is that by supporting activities like this we can have a
small impact on the quality and breadth of CS education for those coming to us
as contributors in later years.

What do you think? If this works for you I could link you to the TEALs people

RE: ASF accepted as a mentoring organization for Google Summer of Code 2015

2015-03-12 Thread Ross Gardler (MS OPEN TECH)

If this works for you I could link you to the TEALs people
to help with content for a blog.

Oh, and I will be at ApacheCon.

Hi Sally,

I am sure Ross and few others from ComDev will also be there at ApacheCon and
should be able to provide details on GSoC at ASF. I will be there as well and
also have a talk accepted on the same topic - http://sched.co/2P6f

Please let me know if you would like to promote anything specific on GSoC, I
will be happy to help and will appreciate your efforts.

Happy to work with you on a press release. Who is the ASF lead on GSoC. You?
Who from ComDev will be at ApacheCon? Are you planning to do something special
there?

Including community dev as it seems appropriate.

Offboarding is equally important as onboarding. The solution as described
by Emmanuel and applied by Apache Directory project is a good one. If the
PMC of project FOO wants to have done it differently, then it is their
prerogative.

My 2 cents.

The gain, of course, is security... Because inactivity could indicate lack
of control over the account, as previously indicated. Whether this is a
significant enough risk to do something about is the question.

The community mailing list is certainly a reasonable place to discuss
this, but it's been discussed before. Note that If you're going to
bring a discussion here from another conversation, it's helpful to
provide links to what you are referring.

I think Mark Thomas's reply hidden in the quoted text covers
everything that needs to be said:

- The PMC is responsible for reviewing all the commits made.

- The security risks of leaving committer accounts active has been
weighed and considered acceptable in other situations.

- The decision is ultimately up to the individual PMCs to make as it
is a social decision with no technical impact.

My personal choice as a former security analyst would be to
pro-actively remove access, but I accept and respect that the ASF as a
whole has made a different decision, and I have not and would not
suggest that the projects where I am a PMC member deviate from the
standard practice. It did irk me the first time the discussion came
up, but I got over it. :-)

We will have to agree to disagree because to me it's an apache way that
volunteers can step away and step back without giant hurdles. This isn't
about removing from a PMC but more about removing commit access seems
like an extraordinary step that should be done in rare situations.

I'm with Pierre on this one. The ATS PMC has, as an example, several members
and committers who no longer read or reply to emails. We honestly have no

Hi Jake,

I am not talking about removing merit and karma. Such is persisted in many
ways, think web pages, wiki pages, etc. I am talking about revoking
permissions at tools levels. That doesn't mean deleting committers
identities within the ASF.

Ensuring that committers get the same permissions back (or not) is up to
the PMC of a project to decide.

A committer account on its own can do very little in the way of harm.

It can (if you know which hoops to jump through) get shell access to
people.a.o and it can send e-mail from an @apache.org e-mail address.

people.a.o is locked down (and infra has additional monitoring in place)
so the risk here is sufficiently small infra is happy with it.

It terms of sending e-mail via an @apache.org e-mail address, if it is
abusive (i.e. spammy) then we do rely on folks reporting it to us.

The PMC is responsible for granting (and revoking) commit access. There
is nothing (of a technical nature - you'll have to answer to the board
and your community for the social aspects) stopping you removing
inactive committers from the appropriate LDAP group(s).

I'd add that the PMC is responsible for reviewing all the commits made
to the PMC's repositories. You are expected to spot if a long inactive
committer suddenly starts making changes or an account you don't
recognise makes changes. Likewise, active committers are expected to
spot changes in their name they did not make.

More generally, if infra has a security concern we shut stuff down
and/or lock accounts first and ask questions later. Any security
concerns should be reported immediately to r...@apache.org

Finally, infra periodically enforces password resets for all committers.
This has the helpful side-effect of effectively locking unused committer
 accounts.
