2011-03-15 Thread Christoph Lukasiak

moin qa folks,

as i more and more change into the ux area it makes less sense to
further lead an qa team, therefore marc neumann will overtake this role
from me, from now on. please support him as you supported me and many
thx for our work together and all the best for all of you, especially my
team: mechtilde, alex, kiril, simon and zoltan.

It is not true, the remaining issues on the unconfirmed list usually
complex and needs special environment to test it, connected to
different database backends, consequently you can not easily confirm
them.
i guess (and this is an experienced guess :) that about 30% of the
current issues have no responses for months or are found on versions
long time ago, are not reproducable anymore or written that bad that
nobody can follow the description etc. :( so i usually rework them
without even opening the office :)

p.s. for the special, really complex issues we need the more specialized
community (especially the base qa team) for recheck, but if an issue is
that special that nobody can recheck it, how important it can be to fix
it (and how many people will benefit from the fix)?

Facing the danger to sound stupid I'd like to say:

I'm not really sure what the expectations and the formal necessities
are. E.g. I'm not actually a project member of dba but de. And I do
not know if I can set issues to confirmed state or if I need special
permission or so.
therefor you can ask a team member:
http://qa.openoffice.org/ooQAReloaded/DatabaseTeamsite/ooQA-TeamDatabaseResp.html

.. all nice and qualified guys who can help you further

The small amount of time I can spend every now and then on helping
would be eaten up totally by digging up all relevant information pages
on the projects site and the wiki.
it is a little bit depressing to hear the same arguments, as before we
have spend a lot of time and manpower on the rework of the qa pages and
the corresponding docu:
http://qa.openoffice.org/ooQAReloaded/Docs/QA-Reloaded-HowToStart.html

http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/QA_reloaded
http://qa.openoffice.org/ooQAReloaded/DatabaseTeamsite/ooQA-TeamDatabase.html

p.s. but i guess that power user which maintain databases, are in the
condition to learn issue handling in rather short time .. does not mean
that every newbie who sit in front of a computer first time, will help
us .. but if you write db issues and read this mailing list, you are
probably not a fully rookie ;)

Could you give a short guideline in a few sentences or point me to a web
page explaning without to much verbosity?

Hi Marc,

Great questions.

Two things come to mind.

One is that really all one needs do is request the ability - the
question is to how I suppose?

Secondly Christoph has on a few occasions, as have others with other
projects, tried to setup bug hunting days and issue confirmation days.

This usually included the use of irc as a meeting place for participants.

The response was less then stellar - I suppose - as I was one that
didn't make it. OK, I have good excuses but you know what they say
about excuses.

With regard to the second thought - I feel that this use of 'a day' is
still valid, but instead of hit and miss days rather more scheduled days.

What I would propose is that I just start this by picking a day of the
week perhaps and schedule my work on confirmations with an explicit
commitment to be on the irc channel at that time. Then let people know
they are welcome to join me, perhaps I can help others be more
efficient with their time. I will just put up a reminder now and then
- if that sounds ok to the group?
sounds great .. also mechtilde is regullary (really, really often) at
irc #qa.openoffice.org

For the first part - how to get can confirm rights and who to ask - ?

http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Canconfirm_Rights

.. but not everybody really needs them! for a couple of issues it make
more sense to ask a db team member ;)

A few days ago I was responding to a email on the users mailing list
and before I did took the time to enter the OO.o website as if I where
a new user (I tried anyway), no logon account and had to read all the
menu's to find my way around, that wanted to report a bug. I rather
thought it was getting fairly good given the last changes to the QA
pages.
the old game: which link is the most important on the first pages .. we
have improved that, but it still can be better .. but please discuss
such things on the general qa board

Wondering as I type this now, is there a good 'I want to be a QA
community tester', survival guide style perhaps, page - don't know,
suppose I'll go look.
i do not want to blame you, but on the qa site the first top link is:
'how to start'

.. i already realized that nobody read this and rather few people use
the qa sites, but i cannot hear anymore that the support of the
community in qa area would raise if we would have a better
infrastructure/guides/support/ircs etc. because after a lot of work this
has not improved significantly :( so

Right now we are closer to 120 - It would help if we could just find a
way to tackle that list and get things moved into or out of work

Assigning issues to developers: Now that means Ocke, but that just
isn't gonna fly. Some way is needed to pull out which issues needing
developer talent, other then Ocke, in order to get them addressed.

Keep in mind that the current list of desired features:

Someone needs to really look at that list and see what can be
implemented as extension - rumor is that Google SOC will be accepting
OO.o again, if so then a simple specification for a few of these
features would go a long way in raising our chances of getting some

Hello fellow Base users and developers,

of the ~2000 mails I sent to d...@dba and us...@dba (wow! 20% of the
mails were from me? My mail client must be lying to me ...), this is one
of the more difficult ones.

Effective immediately, I'll be resigning from the position of Base's
project lead. Along with that, I will probably significantly reduce my
contribution to those lists, and definitely to overall Base.

Background:

Some time ago, I've been asked whether I could imagine working, on a
per-project basis, in another part of Sun's [1] OpenOffice.org team. To
be precise, the talk was about Impress. Well, after some consideration,
I said I could. But - I don't like the idea of doing things only half.
If I were to go to the Impress team, I would want to be an Impress
developer, not half an Impress and half a Base developer.

Consequently, I decided to accept this offering, but only as full-time
assignment. Hey, this was *the* chance to get rid of the responsibility
for all the crimes I committed in Base! :)

So, here I am: still with Sun/Oracle, still with OpenOffice.org, but not
with Base anymore. Well, of course I'll continue to be available for
consultation (though my bad memory is proverbial, at least for my wife,
I'll probably remember a few things I did to the code). And the next
show stopper fix in some code area of mine will probably also be done by
/me. But I'll stop contributing significant changes to Base.

I certainly see this change with mixed feelings.

I started in the Base team more than 10 years ago, in my first job ever,
immediately after university, still some time before StarDivision was
bought by Sun, and StarOffice was open sourced as OpenOffice.org. Times
were interesting and challenging, we did some things pretty well, and
some things went ... not as good as I would have hoped. Still, Base is
an important part of my (professional, at least) life.

On the other hand, other challenges lie ahead. Impress is pretty new to
me, there'll be a lot to learn.

And who knows - perhaps I'll return to Base when the Impress team
recognizes my inherent inability to understand the basics of their work
- YMCA color models, or however those are called, and such ...

I'm going to send another mail regarding my suggestion for a project
lead successor (it won't surprise you too much).

Also, I still owe some of you an Apfelstrudel - I hope we can still do
that at some point in time :)

See you around, the OpenOffice.org community isn't *that* big that I'll
be completely out of your way ...

Ciao
Frank

wholly owned subsidiary of Oracle Corporation

whose IZ nick name is accepted by our SQL parser) as my successor in
this role.

if i would not know ocke for years, the fact that he is the one accepted

Ocke surely knows his ways around in the Base project, he joined the

he is the canonical choice.

So, I suppose we're expected to vote here - let's get the party started,

Hi Karl,

So please read on, as I need a member of dev, ux and qa.

I might not have all the necessary time, but if nobody else volunteers
for the dev part, then count me in. (But be warned that I seldom can
resist giving UX-related comments :)

There does not seem to be much interest in ux and qa... :-(

Hello Karl,

I've been following along and thinking about offering to do the QA
tasks on this. Two reasons for hesitation where
- my current time commitments. Looks look I will have a bit more time
for OOo over the next months..
- well, I have never done exactly this before and need to ask Chris
Lukasis (and/or Frank I suppose) regarding exactly what actions are
expected of the QA resource for this type of feature addition. I have
a good idea, but just want to be sure.

However - I think I can commit to the QA role. ( with a slight caveat
that I still need go over details with the QA team leaders )

hello karl, frank and drew,

i will overtake the ux part and support drew in his qa role .. please
give me a little time to overview the project; my suggestion: let us
overthink the project and start next monday with our new team.

thx

bye chris

[dba-dev] Re: OOo QA - database confirm issues beyond irc

2008-05-13 Thread Christoph Lukasiak

hello again,

as most responding people acknowledged the proposed date, it will be
'the taken' one for our irc ..

again the date: *20.05 from 13:00 to 15:00 on irc 'qa.openoffice.org'*
(german time .. UTC+2)

p.s. thx for the responds and i see forward to meet you there (or in
further discussion etc.)

Hello database testing folks and beyond,

as we have currently a big amount of unconfirmed issues and a rather
small amount of people who are willing to overtake such a job
(confirming them), we want to support the community to overcome their
barriers and join this really important process - therefore a part of
the Sun Dev. QA team and probably several OOo QA members will attend
and stand in for questions answers.

Our suggestion date: 20.05 from 13:00 to 15:00 on irc
'qa.openoffice.org' - if you really want to join, but not at this
time, please suggest an alternative one till the end of this week
(hopefully we can satisfy all willing attendees with a common date).

topic: *confirm issues* .. problems by confirming issues, questions
how to confirm issues, how to improve the confirm issues process, how
to support OOo QA team (f.e. by confirming issues) etc.

I know that the domain name is a bit eary, I could also hear the drums
of (flame) war when I was presented wtih it and I am sure we will
actually change it.

However meanwhile the site do has a category for Base templates and I
think that we can put some work into making some of the base templates
we been talking about on the list.

moin alexander,

thx for the info and the great work

i pasted your template link into a oo wiki doc and added you as autor
(if you do not like it, please forgive me) .. feel free to add or modify
the doc - hope this is in your sense, else please delete your name from
the doc or let me know to do this for you ;)
